Head Down and Bum Up

Is it really a week since I blogged last? I'm so sorry peeps! Will you forgive me if I say that I'm head down and bum up, working on a new book and a new fabric range? Loads of busy and exciting things planned for this year, but you will have to wait a little longer for the reveal.

Meantime luckily all my clever students have been sewing and I can show you what they've been making.

Class at Cottage Quiltworks is always fun, not only do we have a huge and wonderful classroom to romp in but then there's the beautiful shop to rummage through... last class we had a new student who not only came along proudly showing off her completed Stars in Your Eyes quilt (which she made at home, on her own, as her FIRST QUILT ladies!)

Then she decided she's like a challenge and went headlong for Flock Together.

We spent a good part of the day picking out fabrics, and the shop looked like this:

But these are her colours for stars, points and backgrounds so she's off and running! I can't wait to see this quilt come together.

Another CQW student has been working hard on her Whirligig centre with fantastic results. Just look how pretty it is:

There are Whirligigs going on all over the place at the moment. Quite a few on Twitter too! This on is by @petitselefants, we've had a bit of debate over wether the setting triangles work but not that they're on I think they are F.A.B.

My SIL Maria has been stitching too! She tried her hand at the Step Down dolly quilt and used up some of her cute novelties.

Last but by no means least, Peta from my Wednesday night class has been quietly and patiently hand stitching together her version of my Sunday quilt. If you can believe it, Peta is making this quilt as a present for her sister. She's planning to hand quilt it as well.

Hasn't she done the most beautiful job? It's just gorgeous.

All of these quilts are from my books. Why don't you come along and make a quilt with me too? Don't be daunted, you don't have to be an experienced sewer. I love teaching beginners and loads of the quilters in my classes now were beginners when they first came to my classes. Come on you'll have a great time and we would love to have you! Back to book quilts, hand painting and kit cutting - more ordering of backgrounds means that there are still a few Made In Cherry kits from Better Homes and Gardens up for grabs in red, and one or two in the other colours. Be quick!

PS. There's been a bit of confusion this week over the Stars in Your Eyes pattern - if you have been reading about this, there is nothing wrong with the pattern it is correct. You need to look at the templates, diagrams and picture of the quilt to help you along, some of the diamonds are not cut as expected for a patchwork quilt, and some are. If you are making it and having trouble please email me.

Quilts for Sale

I don't usually sell my quilts - they take a long time and a lot of expense to make, plus I teach from them so I need to have the original quilt with me when I travel to classes. Also, I love them. Particularly the quilts that have a lot of hand quilting and applique. I love them to bits. So they hang around my house, get folded up on chairs, draped over beds, hung off ladders, and given to special friends, family and of course my boys.

However. There are only so many quilts one house can hold, and every now and then I do sell a few off. And so after MANY requests to sell the red colourway of my Made in Cherry quilt featured in Better Homes and Gardens this month, I have decided to sell all four.

Sorry though....the red quilt is already sold, but the pink and grey, eggplant and blue quilts are now for sale. Sorry the light is bad on these pics...if it would ever stop raining in Sydney I might be able to get some light!

The back of the blue quilt is a Japanese seersucker in a retro dot pattern. The quilting is done in light blue thread.

The eggplant quilt is a deep, rich browny purple that ges beautifully with the St Ives mauves and the purple Alexander Henry Heath fabric on the back.

The pink and grey quilt I think is my favourite. I love a pink and grey combo and I also love the huge swathes of my From Little Things check on the back!

I am also selling the Sandwich Short of a Picnic quilt (pattern in my book) that Erica made for me to take to Houston last year.

All these quilts have hung in my booth at Houston, and have been shown at my Schoolhouse. Please don't look at my face in this photo. :)

The star quilts are all 2m square and the Sandwich quilt is a King Single. They are all professionally machine quilted in a butterfly pattern by Kim Bradley my wonderful machine quilter. They are all made using my St Ives range of fabrics for Lecien, Japan.

Oakshott Fabrics

I've been a big fan of Oakshott fabrics for a long time now, ever since I stumbled across a blog post about them around 8 years ago. For ages I tried to get hold of the fabrics in Australia - which was not easy let me tell you! So having cadged little bits from places for years, imagine my thrill to go to the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham in 2008 and see they had TWO WHOLE STANDS. Oh my heavens...... needless to say my budget was completely blown and my luggage was overweight :)

Two recent quilts I made using Oakshott both won prizes at the New South Wales Quilt Guild Show last year. They're also in my book! The Night Garden:

Now of course Oakshott have their own marvellous website where you can buy all their wonderful fabrics and bundles right from the source. Bloggers BOM Progress

I've been fitting my BOM blocks in amongst other things, and I'm having fun making them! They're going to be bright but isn't that half the fun? I still have Pat Sloan and Quiltdad's to make.

More pics of quilts have been coming in, plus one I have meant to show you for MONTHS. Sandi at Cottage Quiltworks came along to a few of my classes there and made The Burbs. She decided her ladies would be The Help, having just seen the movie! So here are her ladies....

Aren't they fantastically retro? I LOVE the combo of the check in the background and the border. Just gorgeous. Robyn came to my class at the Cottage Quiltworks Winter Escape last year not knowing what to expect. She didn't think improvisational piecing was going to be for her, but look what happened....

She got so excited about her dollies, houses and trees she made three quilts for her grand daughters! How cute are those, nearly as cute as her grandbabies.

Claire from Belgium has been making A Sandwich Short of a Picnic. I love her fabrics!

I've been making things too but I can't show you... my next book is heavily in the works and there are bits of quilt all over the house. You'll have to wait until 2013 for it though..... but here's what I've been chopping up this afternoon.....

Aurifil Designer of the Month

Howdy all! Here's a fantastic program I'm involved with this year for you to check out. The Aurifil Designer of the Month is a whole bunch of awesome designers making a block each every month for you all to make and play along! AND those generous peeps at Aurifil are giving away amazing prizes as well to make all that stitching even more enjoyable.

All the designers will be stitching with gorgeous Aurifil Lana or 12 wt and using Sassy by Moda as our feature fabric. This line is new for Fall 2011 so you should be able to find it at your local or online.

January's block was made by Roseann Kermes, you can read all about her here! And this is her gorgous block.

Rosann used Aurifil 12wt for this project, here are her colours:

2260 – red
2692 – Black
2975 – dark gold
4182 – turquoise
4663 – variegated turquoise
4671 – variegated brown
5006 – lt turquoise

Cute huh? I'm going to have to get myself organised and decide what colours I'm going to stitch in - after all you can't be involved in something like this and not make all the beautiful blocks too can you??

I love it so much when people send me things they have made that were inspired by my patterns. I've been saving up a whole bunch I've been meaning to show you, so I'm going to release them all in a flood. My apologies if I have forgotten some of the names or gotten my tags mixed up!

Deb Robertson from Christchurch has made a Coming Up Roses (Material Obsession Two) quilt to commerate the earthquakes in NZ last year.

That's her little daughter there lying on the bottom so you can see how big it is!

I'm ashamed to say I can't remember who sent me this little beauty - I have a feeling it belongs to Rita at Red Pepper, and I right Rita? It's called Peaks and Troughs and it's from Quilting: From Little Things.

Kick it to the Curb

So we are still wandering through the end of our renovation, having run out of cash but not ideas. I wanted a small cabinet for the boys bathroom - it's not a big room and there is only one small over the sink cabinet for keeping everything in. Budget being $0, when I drove past an side table by the side of the road a few weeks ago, I thought, why not?

I sanded it, and took the horrid handles off the drawers:

The bathroom is painted a soft apple green, with white tiles and a latte, dark blue and white shower curtain. The towels are all dark blue and brown and the fixtures are shiny silver. I painted the cabinet a latte gloss:

Then I Mod Podged some Anna Maria Horner fabric onto the drawers, added some shiny silver handles and voila! New furniture.

Next I'm tackling our TV cabinet, which is looking a bit old and sad, and two footstools.... I'll keep you updated.

A Few Cool Things to Direct Your Attention to

Well there's an unwieldy blog title if ever I saw one. There were more than a few cool things I had to tell you though, and it seemed appropriate. 2012 is shaping up to be an exciting year in more ways than one - and I'm starting off with a bang.

These amazing blocks were made by all of YOU, isn't that incredible? Yep, these are some of the blocks you all made for Amy and Anabel. For those of you who didn't participate, the blocks are supposed to look like the bass lines on a stereo, to commemerate Amy's late husband Dan. There's something about seeing all these blocks together and thinking of all the people out there caring about Amy that brings tears to my eyes every time I look at them. You are all so generous of spirit and wonderful.

These blocks are for Anabel's quilt, they are light and fresh and pretty just like she is. I know this quilt looks huger than king single, but it isn't, it just looks that way on the design wall. Would you believe, I had just enough blocks to make the two quilts, with two spare? I think that's amazing, serendipity.

I am now looking for someone in Australia who would be willing to donate the machine quilting one one or both of the quilts.. please contact me if you can help.

For the last few weeks I have been head down, bum up working on this.

What was going to be a quick, fun project for an upcoming issue of Quilters Companion turned into a bit of an epic.... I just fell in love with the fabrics (they are all 100% Italian cotton shirtings) and decided to hand quilt it to within an inch of it's life.

The things I do. I put the last stitch in the binding today ready to Express Post to the editor tomorrow. Sorry to be so slow Clare.... however I was held up by slipping on a piece of discarded pizza in Westfield shops before Christmas, nearly breaking every bone in my body! Bruises are gone finally :)

Thought you may like to see my able bodied helpers. Here's Damo the Sherpa holding one corner, Charlie fled in horror from the other end at the suggestion he might be on the blog again. Sorry dude.

A fewo other cool things to direct your attention to - the Made in Cherry Quilt Along.

Chelsea at Pins and Bobbins is running this using my free pattern for the St Ives collection I did this year for Lecien. You can get all the details at her blog. Due to popular demand, I have some more kits for the quilts (which you can see at Chelsea's blog too) on my website for sale using all the original fabrics. The kits are $180 AUS and contain all the fabric for the 80" square top, and the binding. You don't have to use my fabric for the quilt along of course, but if you want to you can - and I am also happy to work up kits in the alternative sizes Chelsea provides in St Ives as well. Just drop me an email to sarah@sarahfielke.com.

Hiedy-Ho

Happy New Year everybody! Seems like weeks since I blogged, and well, I guess it is. Truth is, although I love Christmas and everything the end of the year brings, this year it just all got the better of me a bit and I needed a proper break, so I've not blogged, Twittered, Facebooked or Pintrest-ed for a while. I feel strangely free.

Instead I've been quilting a lot less than I should of a quilt I have due, and reading a lot more than I should of some great books.

Aussie Christmas is a different experience to the snowy ones experienced by so many of you. My Aussie Christmas is all about the heat, the bright colours, the summer flavours and the beach. I got plenty of all of them this season....

As well as plenty of family when all 13 of us sat down for Christmas lunch and my (mercifully!!) very moist and tasty turkey!

A wonderful few weeks filled with salt, sand, and a beautiful boat trip on my Dad's little ferry, and happy, happy kids.

Yep, it was rough.

Back to life, back to reality...
