Sometimes I pull together inspired dishes, where I plan out days in advance and visit multiple locations to get all the right ingredients. And other times, I rummage through the kitchen cupboards, fridge and freezer to find whatever ingredients I can for a quick meal. This is one of the latter times, but its no less delicious than if i'd planned it for days.

With your indulgence, I begin with an apology. I had fully intended to write an article last week, but the overlap of my return from Japan and the deadline for completing and submitting the article, superimposed onto epic jet lag, simply overwhelmed me. So to those of you who look for my articles and wondered why the article “teaser” appeared in the print edition but the article itself never made it online, I publicly and most sincerely do apologize.

Twelve years ago, my wife and I moved from Manhattan to Harrisburg, Pa., and sought a Jewish community in tune with our liberal, Upper West Side Jewish ethos. We found ourselves living in what was, for a provincial state capital floating in a sea of Evangelical Christianity, a remarkably diverse Jewish neighborhood — our new friends included Reform Jewish lesbians, egalitarian Conservative Jews, non-egalitarian Conservative Jews and Orthodox Jews who eschewed American holidays (including Thanksgiving) as inimical to Jewish tradition.

Use summer fruit to make a tasty, impressive dessert

There's nothing I love more than a summer pie. Sweet, succulent fruit, encased in flaky pastry - it perfectly epitomizes the late summer months. But pie can be an arduous task, and on hot summer days do not let themselves to toiling in the kitchen.

So this version - with a little work, sure - has an easier tart crust, and a simple streusel topping - no need to roll out another top crust. I always use nectarines because I don't want the extra effort of peeling of the skin of peaches. You could also throw in some berries or other stone fruits like plums for some variety.

Whether it’s for a new Star Wars Legos set that is priced above rubies or for a new video game so that he can learn to snowboard like Shaun White (in the warmth of our basement), he easily and eagerly asks for cash to meet his ever-changing wants and needs.
No Israeli returned home with a medal in this year’s Summer Olympics, which ended Sunday night in London, but Israel can bask in some reflected glory — reflected in the gold medal in sailing won by New Zealand’s Jo Aleh.

Aleh, 26, is the daughter of dual citizen Israelis-New Zealanders.

The only known Jewish member of New Zealand’s Olympic squad at the London Olympics, Aleh, right, teamed with Olivia Powrie to win the 470 regatta competition, four years after she finished in seventh place at the Beijing Games.

So when Nuseir Yassin, 20, a rising sophomore at Harvard who was born and raised in the Israeli village of Arraba, won a spot in DreamIt’s New York City summer program with a mix of Israeli and other fledgling companies, he couldn’t have been happier.
