Lakeside Bars in & around Lausanne

That summer feeling is fleeting, so we want to ensure you squeeze every ounce of sunshine and good times out of this season. Why not visit these ephemeral bars that boast some of the best views on Lac Léman? Here are THE lakeside bars you need to visit this summer.

La Générale

With a nod toward General Guisan, one of Switzerland’s most notable military officers who was a native of Pully, this ephemeral bar and restaurant serves local drinks and dishes with a side of a lakeside view. They are especially proud of their mineral drink set-up–which has a system that produces their lemonades, cold tea, sparkling water etc. with water from Pully. All local and almost zero waste.

Everything points to abandonment – the roots of plane trees obstinately push through the sidewalks. Saplings claim their space in the exposed earth of the resulting cracks. The adjacent plot, half filled with gravel doesn’t seem to lead anywhere you would walk after dark. Indeed, Jetée de la Compagnie sits behind a warehouse that is beyond an abandoned gravel lot, which is located beside a car park. It’s no wonder we never wandered back here before! But the views, the food, the drinks, and the deck providing access to the lake are all reasons why we’re glad to wander there time and time again.

And right next to Jetée de la Compagnie, sharing the same wooden deck, is Minimum. Another ephemeral seasonal bar that offers drinks, snacks, and lots of love. The views are unbeatable, and there’s not much better than sipping on a refreshing drink and dipping your toes (or diving right in) into the lake.

Last summer, the city of Lausanne finally woke up to the fact that we have so much underutilized shore space, and people actually do want to go have a drink and bite lakeside during the summer months. With that line of thought, the city announced that they would be opening up three additional seasonal buvettes with the idea that it will be “trialed” to see how it goes. One of them, opened as of mid-July 2022, was La Guinguette de Vidy — with some of the Lausanne à Table muscle behind its helm – and it’s open for another season this summer. Open 7/7 from noon until 23H, it features local flavors, ice cold drinks, and is only a few steps from the shore near the skate park in Vidy (Bowl de Vidy).

Another seasonal Lausanne lakeside bar that was trialed last summer was Côté Lac Lausanne. Located right in front of the Olympic Museum last year- but moving a little down the quai this summer (2023) to benefit from some added shade, it still has panoramic views of the lake and mountains plus an access point for swimmers near by. Managed by the same team behind La Générale in Pully and Lapin Vert, Meraki, and XIII^e siècle here in Lausanne.

Buvette de la Plage

Open seven days a week from mid-March until October, this local Lutry spot is bustling when the sun is shining. Situated right next to a sandy beach, with access points for swimmers and stand-up-paddle-boarders (the paddle board school is right next door), plus a playground nearby for kids makes this a popular beachside hangout for everyone. Featuring local products as well as a full grill, come here to eat, play, drink, and relax. Life is good.

Lilo Montreux

A cute little waterfront guinguette in Montreux with access for boats, this is a perfect beach bar if you’re passing on foot or happen to be a lucky one on a boat. Pass by for aperitif, drinks, and good vibes.

Bar Le Passe-Passe

Located in the absolutely dreamy and idyllic little village of La Tour de Peilz, this lakeside bar offers local drinks and snacks with an epic view of the Alps and vineyards surrounding it. If you’re at the “Dolce Riviera” in Vevey, consider walking along the quai for 10-15 minutes and stumble upon La Tour de Peilz. It’s worth it.

La Crique

Open for the season as of June 2, La Crique, the bar located in the ephemeral space in Place Louis-Soutter in Morges is launching its second season. Created by four friends from the Morges region, the non-profit association La Crique will oversee the management of this summer bar for the next three summers. This place offers local catering as well as cultural and social events for all in an idyllic setting just close enough to put your feet in the water.

Bain Payes

When it comes to summer living, few places on Lac Léman do it better than our neighbors down in Vevey. With an excellent menu of small bites as well as gorgeous salads and tempting burgers AND direct swimming access, Vevey’s Bains Payes is worth the short drive.

La Terrasse

We’ve never actually visited this “La Terrasse”, but we’ve heard from several friends that it’s a must-visit when in the area. An updated beach hut-style venue for global comfort food classics & drinks by the lake, it’s a great place to stop after a stroll on this side of the lake or on your way back from the Jardin Botanique. It’s the quintessentiel beloved summer bar on the Quai Wilson boasting views of the Jet d’Eau–can’t get more Genevois than that!

Dolce Riviera

It’s back! Check out the initiative by Montreux Riviera called “Dolce Riviera “. They’ve set up decks in specific areas and towns to allow more swim access to the lake, as well as food and drink stations nearby. It’s a must-do ritual this summer – just walk the quais in Vevey and Montreux and let the good vibes and even better views whisk you away.

Sun shining, breeze blowing, itching to get outside? Here’s where you should spend your days and evenings when the weather is just right. We’ve rounded up a list of our favorite terraces in and around Lausanne:

La Parada

A brand new and colorful terrace in the heart of Lausanne with a dynamic lunch menu and after-work drinks and bites. We spent an entire afternoon lunching on this terrace and fell in love. Who doesn’t want to sip on a margarita and eat chips and guac under the canopy of verdant green while listening to the rippling flow of a city fountain?

Les Jardins du Vieux Lausanne & Giraf Bar

An oasis in the heart of the city, Les Jardins is one of those special places that you kind of want to keep for yourself. Nestled at the base of La Cité, the seasonal bar is a beautiful brainchild of the Restaurant le Vieux-Lausanne and Bar Giraf.

Le Café Perché

Nestled within the Quartier de la Violette just above Beaulieu lies a somewhat hidden outdoor café that’s worth finding. Le Café Perché offers homemade lemonades, organic coffees, artisanal ice cream, and flavorful sandwiches and snacks all faits maison using regional products. It’s a simple and humble space with anything but a simple and humble panoramic view.

Sardine

Verdant, lively, and right in the heart of La Cité, Sardine has become one of our favorite terraces in Lausanne for a drink with friends or a special dinner out.

Café de l’Evêché

On the hidden terrace of Café de l’Evêché, you’ll find a sympathetic crowd of cheese lovers ordering one of the café’s TEN fondue options. Although we’ve not yet tried it, the house fondue especially piqued our interest – it’s prepared with beer and armagnac.

Brasserie de Montbenon

Your first steps into the Brasserie de Montbenon will be extraordinary. Your gaze will be drawn upward, and as if by instinct, you will gasp and briefly hold your breath. It’s just that beautiful. Then you’ll step out onto the terrace and have a hard time choosing whether to sit inside or outside.

The Great Escape

There might not be a more amicable place in all the city. For many, stepping into The Great Escape is a nostalgic experience, conjuring memories of collegiate days and eternal summers.

Thai Au Lac

Situated right on the water near the Vidy harbour, the terrace stretches out underneath a canopy of trees and umbrellas. On this particular evening, the tables were filled with couples, friends, families–smiling sun-kissed cheeks drinking cocktails and sharing generous platters, the smell of curry and garlic wafting in the air.

Les Arches

Ripped jeans, body piercings, tube tops, and killer tattoos litter this bar under a bridge. Owned by the D! Club, this spot is prime time for people watching, catching a few sun rays, and drinking a killer frozen margarita.

The Lacustre

Watch boats pass, feel the breeze off the lake, gaze as the sunlight changes on the mountains, and eat and drink incredibly well. We’ve spent many brunches, lunches, and even laaaaate evenings at The Lacustre and we still keep coming back for more. It remains one of our favorite terraces in Lausanne for it’s laid back vibe and quality food.

L'Impression

A small neighborhood bistro with a flexitarian menu (meaning everyone is welcome, and flavors are just as bold and bright and fresh regardless of whether you order a vegan dish or the lamb), they are open for breakfast, brunch and lunch. We were particularly struck by how simple yet stunning our dishes were.

Jetée de La Compagnie

In a city as small as Lausanne, it’s easy to make the mistake of believing that everything has already been seen and that all the good ideas have already been had. But for all the tracks that we’ve made across this town, we never ventured beyond the Bellerive parking lot to visit the waterfront behind the CGN docks until this little buvette encouraged us to.

Les Grandes Roches

You might assume that drinking under a bridge should be saved as a last resort in life. But at Les Grandes Roches an unusual urban space has been reclaimed and under-bridge-drinking given a new cool.

P'tit Bar

Just under the shadows of our Notre Dame cathedral sits a cafe whose name is certainly no misnomer, P’Tit Bar. With just a few tables scattered comfortably on the sidewalk, it’s safe to say that this terrace has one of the best views in the city.

La Folie Voltaire

This is one of Lausanne’s family hotspots, so don’t hesitate to bring the little guys. A playground is just next to the dining area, so you can enjoy your adult conversation, knowing that your children are a short ear-shot away.

Downtown

Right in the heart of Lausanne, with a view of the Palace and the energy of the Flon, is Downtown. Known for their incredible breakfast, superfood salads and burgers, it’s a great place to start the morning or grab an apero or dinner with friends.

Café des Artisans

Snag a seat on this urban terrace in the midst of Lausanne center. Drink local brews and eat tasty dishes all while watching the city go by.

L'Auberge de Beaulieu

The outside front terrace, or beer garden, is spacious and sunny. A perfect place to let the kids run around (or play in the rocks), while you enjoy a beer, a homemade agua fresca or one of the stunning cocktails on their menu. We imagine many summer evenings spent on this terrace in the future.

Le Bar @ Beau Rivage Palace

Under a shade of trees, and views of our pristine lake – the 5* service and cocktails make this bar in Ouchy a favorite to frequent when walking the boardwalk. Plus the pebbles and large open space nearby can occupy little ones if they happen to be in your company.

Hungry Bear

It’s a terrace in the trees sous-gare where the fresh cocktails, regional plates, and local fare are highlighted. Focusing on the locality and proximity of their products, as well as small producers, Hungry Bear is a restaurant that aims to surprise and delight with unusual combinations, colors, and textures. Their daily offering of brunch toasts, both sweet and savory, as well as their emphasis on healthy, flavorful dishes brings a refreshing and dependable spot to our rotation.

Etoile Blanche

This 1930s-themed bar and restaurant is famous for its hamburgers, great selection of beers, and lively after-work drinks scene. The establishment borrows its name from the White Star Line, the British shipping company that gave the world the Titanic among other forward-thinking, turn-of-the-20th-century vessels and the décor remains faithful to this retro spirit.

Street Cellar

Self-described as a “wine bar that breaks all the codes”, Street Cellar is the result of a crowd-funding initiative by two friends. They will offer local wines drawn directly from the barrel, elevated but unpretentious street food, and their space will be decorated and painted by local street artists.

Yoga on the deck this Tuesday from 9am-10am at Jetée de la Compagnie
“The Great Brochette of the Lake” event is happening for Lausanne à Table. Head down to La Guinguette this Wednesday to have lamb roasted over an open fire and natural wines.
Wondering what the future holds? Head to the TedX talk at La Cote International School where they invite different dynamic speakers about “Where Are We Heading?”
Get your swing on this Thursday as Swingtime Lausanne pairs up with Quartier de Flon to have a Soirée Swing. Open to all.
This Thursday, head to the History Museum of Lausanne (MHL) for a guided tour of their current exhibition “Borders: The Treaty of Lausanne”
This Friday, celebrate the female winemakers of the region at the Fête des Vigneronnes at Place Alfred Stucky (next to Café de Grancy) from 5 pm.
This weekend is for treasure hunters: the Brocante Lutry is back Friday, Saturday & Sunday.
Book lovers unite! This weekend is the Festival de litterature jeunesse – the children’s literature festival in Vevey where they promise a fun-filled agenda of workshops, ateliers, games, and chances to meet authors and illustrators.
This Saturday in Ouchy, local artisans will sell their handmade creations on the quai lakeside at the Sweet Market.

Cyclotour du Léman: the popular cycling race, open to all – both amateur and keen sportsmen and women, is back. The event runs along the Swiss and French shores of Lake Geneva.

There are lots of events this week you won't want to miss: several stand-up comedies, an alpine flea market, a silent disco and a food festival.

Don’t miss this Alpine Flea Market on Monday, where can buy and sell second-hand mountain equipment.
From May 15 until June 28, discover the Salée au Sucre with Lausanne à Table. A true emblem of Vaud’s culinary heritage, this creamy dessert has been delighting the region’s inhabitants since the early 20th century.
From Wednesday to Friday, Open Air will propose 3 standup sets and 15 artists at Place Arlaud.
Luna Park kicks off this Wednesday lakeside in Place Bellerive and will continue until June 11.
If you’re someone who thinks we should question everything about life, love, religion and politics, then you’re going to love Romanian comedian Victor Patrascan – the Dirty Immigrant (Wednesday, le Cazard).
Silent Disco on Wednesday night at the cathedral’s esplanade.
Chicken Comedy Club is back at Downtown Lausanne on Wednesday night.
Qchef edition n.5 – Ready for a special dinner and entrance to the World Food Festival in Bussigny? (The Stamm, May 16-17, 19, 24, 26).
Night entry at the Bains de Lavey, with the thermal baths open until midnight, will be offered on Thursdays this month (May 18 and 25).
From May 11, the Olympic Museum presents “Free to Run”, a multimedia experience that explores the fascinating world of marathon and long-distance running. The exhibition tells the story of how personal and social freedoms were achieved through running.

If you're looking for a unique dining experience that combines the flavors of Peruvian and Japanese cuisine, then Matcha Picchu at Lausanne Palace is the perfect destination. This newly opened restaurant has already made a name for itself, thanks to its exciting blend of culinary traditions and its expertly crafted dishes. Just don't be put off with where they keep the menu...

The ambiance of Matcha Picchu is sleek and modern, with a touch of elegance that perfectly complements the food. The restaurant’s design features a beautiful blend of wood, metal, and glass, creating a sophisticated atmosphere that is both warm and inviting. We were led to a cozy table nestled by the window and our server approached to ask about drinks – the only catch? The menus are placed on the servers in the form of QR code buttons. One button is for the drinks, the other is for sharing plates, and the last is for larger main courses. Once we got passed the awkward (and slightly intimate) scanning, we were on our way to culinary heaven.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Thomas Pierimarchi, who has extensive experience in both Peruvian and Japanese cuisine. His innovative creations showcase the best of both worlds, using fresh ingredients and bold flavors to create dishes that are as beautiful as they are delicious. Chef Pierimarchi’s culinary expertise is evident in every plate that comes out of his kitchen, from the delicate sashimi to the hearty ceviche.

Speaking of plates, the menu at Matcha Picchu is a culinary journey in and of itself. From the Tiradito Nikkei, a fusion of Peruvian and Japanese flavors with raw fish, to the Lomo Saltado, a Peruvian classic with Japanese influences, each dish is a celebration of the unique flavors of both cuisines. The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Matcha Picchu Roll, a sushi roll filled with fresh salmon, avocado, and cucumber, and topped with a tangy sauce and a sprinkle of green tea powder. It’s a must-try for any sushi lover.

But it’s not just the food that makes Matcha Picchu stand out. The restaurant also offers an extensive selection of cocktails, wine, and sake to complement the meal. The knowledgeable staff is happy to make recommendations and help you find the perfect pairing for your meal.

It is that time of year again. Your foodie guide to the season’s coming events with Lausanne à Table launched today at noon! Why is this such an important occasion, you might ask? Well, many of these events sell out well in advance. Take our seasoned advice: Book it NOW if you see something that tickles your “gourmandise” fancy.

Lausanne à Table has over 200 members and since 2014 has been connecting local artisans with its inhabitants through the experience of food, beverage, music, and some of the most festive gatherings we’ve ever attended. The non-profit organization’s mission is defined by a depth in taste, curious discovery, and a culinary scene that is as hyper-localized as possible. Think farm-to-table taken to an entirely new level.

From workshops for kids and adults to dinners in some of the city’s most illustrious landmarks, Lausanne à Table has over 50 amazing events planned for the coming year. We can guarantee that you’ll have an agenda full of what truly are Lausanne’s most delectable offerings. Here’s a short list of a few of the events that we are most looking forward to this year.

Miam Festival 5^th edition: Sat 27 May- Mon 29 May

Last year was a record one for this festival that transformed Place de Riponne into an international food hall. Taking place the weekend of Pentecote, this year’s event will have 27 stands representing countries from around the world with added delicacies from Korea, Croatia, and Sri Lanka.

La Fête des Vigneronnes: Friday 9 June

The women winemakers of our region are highlighted in this early summer neighborhood gathering on the patio at Café de Grancy. Some of our most lauded women who have only been allowed to make wine since 2008 gather and share their noble creations from the “Terroir” Romandie. Expect to see the likes of some of our favorites including Catherine Cruchon Griggs, Laura Paccot, and Swiss Winemaking icon Marie-Therese Chappaz at this cozy event.

Les Tables Ephémères err on being more expensive but for good reason. Expect dinner inside some of the city’s most symbolic locations (i.e. Cathedral de Lausanne, the Chateau Saint-Maire, Hotel de Ville, and Palais de Rumine to name a few.) Paired with the culinary expressions of some of Lausanne’s most impressive chefs, these will be memorable soirées.

We’re also excited about the annual return of many local favorites, including the “Brunch Geant” in Ouchy, the Autumn Fondue in Parc de Valency, and the 3^rd annual Malakoff Championnat du monde at Espace Amaretto. But also new features like “Le Palais Gourmand”, a museum and food and wine pairing at Palais du Rumine, and “Honey Where are My Fries” where, you guessed it, a festival of “frites” will be held in an old french-fry factory complete with DJ’s and a costume party (come as your favorite fry!? WTH, but we LOVE it).

With so many different events to choose from welcoming all ages, palates, and budgets, this year’s Lausanne à Table program is sure to be yet another hit. Get your spots reserved, your calendars marked, and your appetites ready! And if they’re already sold out, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

A comic strip festival, a wine tasting, live music, a escape-room-style experience and a local creators market. This and much more happening in Lausanne this first week of May:

Lausanne Comic Strip Festival (May 1-14) is back – a must-go annual event for comic fans with workshops, talks and artists signing sessions.
On Thursday Brasserie de Montbenon hosts a special wine tasting evening with special guest Laura Paccot.
La Nuit Des Artistes on Friday and Saturday: a musical event that takes place once a year in Lausanne with the aim of promoting young groups from the region.
Looking for an exciting adventure with your family and friends? Save the Smurfs from the evil wizard Gargamel at this immersive new escape-room-style experience along the streets of Lausanne (Saturday).
The Troc de Belmont is holding its second event of the year – a “vide-dressing” / secondhand sale for adult clothing, shoes and accessories.
*Few spots left* On Saturday afternoon join this mug and coaster handlettering workshop with local freelance lettering artist (and TLG Contributor) Lama. All you need to bring with you is your creativity and curiosity to learn something new!
Want to learn how to taste wine like a pro? Then you don’t want to miss this wine tasting basics session hosted by Cépages on Saturday.
Le Supermarket is back in Montbenon this Saturday with a selection of local creators from the region.
