HTC ThunderBolt in the wild one more time: 8GB internal, no HDMI?

Here we are a mere day away from the ThunderBolt's probable announce at Verizon's CES press conference, which, by our rough count, gives us at least one more opportunity to see the LTE-capable monster leaked in the wild. That opportunity comes courtesy of AndroidSPIN, who claims that we can expect a 1GHz single-core processor, 8GB of internal storage with microSD expansion, 8 megapixel rear and 1.3 megapixel front cams, Android 2.2.1 with Sense, HTC-customized mapping and nav (probably HTC Locations with offline caching), and DLNA compatibility -- but no built-in HDMI. Every one of those specs was either already expected or believable enough, though the lack of HDMI -- if true -- would still give the EVO 4G some bragging rights more than six months after its release. Score one for longevity, eh?

HTC Dream Google G1 Smartphone from T-Mobile

The Google G1 was the first Android compatible smartphone and was produced by well known handset manufacturer HTC. The phone was launched as a T-Mobile exclusive in 2008. Response to the Google phone has been fairly mixed. From a looks point of view, the G1 was never going to win any awards with its relatively chunky body (thanks to a 5 row QWERTY keyboard) and quirky ‘chin' which you either love or hate. That said, the physical keyboard is ideal for those of you who still haven't gotten used to touchscreen keyboards and may be worth the extra weight.
From a technical perspective, the phone comes with everything we've come to expect from HTC devices including 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support together with a passable 3.2 Megapixel camera and GPS. Being a Google-branded device, integration with all of the Google applications (search, mail, talk, calendar, maps etc.) is seamless and intuitive as is the rest of the Android UI. The phone ships with a 1150mAh Lithium-ion battery and is quoted as having up to 406 minutes of talk time on GSM although reviews seem to indicate that battery life is nowhere near as good as it should be. Extended 2200mAh batteries are now becoming available and are highly recommended for heavy users.
Overall of the Google G1 is a nice phone that handles adequately. It may not have the wow-factor visually or even technically but as a first mover it is a good example of the potential of Android-powered smartphones. Now bring on the G2.

HTC Magic Smartphone from Vodafone

It wasn't long after the launch of the Google G1 that rumours of a G2 started to circulate together with 'leaked' images of the phone. Up until recently, this has all been speculation but at the 2008 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Vodaphone confirmed that they were teaming up with HTC to launch the HTC Magic (a.k.a. HTC Sapphire), the second Android-compatible smartphone.
As a handset, HTC Magic is not a major departure from the G1 although it does up the ante in terms of style. The phone is thinner and lighter (owing to the exclusion of a full keyboard) and the original G1's pronounced ‘chin' has been smoothed for a much sleeker look. In terms of specifications, the HTC Magic is very similar, using the same Qualcomm MSM7201 processor, a 3.2 inch LCD touchscreen and 3.2 megapixel camera. Internal ROM has also been doubled to 512MB. Obviously the initial battery life issues of the G1 did not go unnoticed, and the Magic will ship with a 1340mAh battery meaning increased talk time.
The HTC Magic phone is a Vodafone exclusive and will be available across Europe from April 2009. At this stage there are no definite dates for availability outside of Europe.

Samsung U900

Samsung makes excellent sliders, Definitely true, if the U900 is any indication. Besides being very well built , slim and featuring a brushed metal body, the U900 has a lovely screen. It’s compact too, and very much for the college goer looking for something powerful and chic. The call accept/reject button are large, you could find them with your eyes closed. The keypad seems reminiscent of Motorola phones, some sort of a membrane based keypad that nonetheless works fine. The most innovative feature is incorporated into the menu button- there is none.

Samsung 5 megapixel camera is easy to use with good menus and option, although its camera isn’t as good as N95 or the N82. The only trick which Samsung missed is the presence of GPS and WLAN. The U900 is a good phone for something cute, hardly, yet functional. It hasn’t got the powerful convergence of features like N95 and N82, but it looks radically different and is flashy too, like the Viewty. Choose it over two Nokia’s above only if you don’t need the extra features they have!

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have per se laws defining it as a crime to drive with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at or above a proscribed level, currently 0.08 percent (0.08 g alcohol per 100 ml blood).
License suspension or revocation traditionally follows conviction for alcohol-impaired driving. Under a procedure called administrative license suspension, licenses are taken before conviction when a driver fails or refuses to take a chemical test. Because administrative license suspension laws are independent of criminal procedures and are invoked right after arrest, they've been found to be more effective than traditional post-conviction sanctions. Administrative license suspension laws are in place in 41 states and the District of Columbia.
More than half of all U.S. states require DUI offenders to install ignition interlocks on their vehicles in order to drive during a license suspension and/or require interlocks for specified time periods before fully relicensing offenders. These interlock devices analyze a driver’s breath and disable the ignition if the driver has been drinking. In 13 states (Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington), such a restriction is applied to all offenders, including first time offenders. California applies a similar restriction to all offenders, but only in 4 counties. An additional 9 states apply the restriction to all offenders with high BACs (usually 0.15 percent or higher) and to repeat offenders, and 6 states apply the restriction only to repeat offenders.
Laws in the remaining states do not require interlocks at all, though courts or DMVs in 18 states and the District of Columbia have the discretion to apply interlock requirements. Only 3 states (Alabama, South Dakota, and Vermont) have no interlock laws.

Absorption Rate: The rate at which consumed alcohol finds its way into the blood stream. While alcohol sits in the stomach, its absorption is delayed. Absorption rate will be affected by how much was eaten, individual biologic differences, and what type of beverage was consumed. When drinking continues over a course of hours, both absorption and “burnoff” (metabolizing of alcohol) will be happening simultaneously.

Administrative License Suspension: A law that allows the prompt suspension of the license of drivers charged with Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) when a driver has a BAC above the prescribed limit, or sometimes if a driver refuses to take a roadside blood or breath test. Thus the license may be suspended before adjudication of the DWI charge.

BAC: Short for “blood alcohol concentration.” BAC refers to the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream and is measured in percentages. BAC can be measured either by breath, blood or urine testing and is often used by law enforcement to determine whether or not a motorist is “legally drunk.” All 50 states have adopted BAC laws that make it illegal to drive with a BAC at or above a set amount. As of May of 2007, all 50 states have adopted 0.08% as the BAC limit.

Mobile Phones

While Crave was out in South Korea with Samsung last week, we saw a presentation of some of their latest mobile phones. In 2005, Samsung launched around 140 phones and over the next year it looks like it's going to make a whole bunch more.
Right now Samsung is the world's third largest mobile phone manufacturer and is making technological advancements at an incredible pace. This is a selection of some of its latest handsets, some of which will come to the UK.

DUI / DWI - Drunk driving is known as driving under the influence (DUI) is some states and driving while impaired or intoxicated (DWI) in other states. DUI/DWI refers to operating a vehicle or being in actual physical control of a vehicle while one's blood alcohol content (BAC) is above the legal limit set by state law. This is considered the level at which the driver’s mental faculties are impaired. State statutes vary as to what that level is, but it ranges from .08 to .10. This charge is a criminal offense in all the U.S. states and most countries. A combination of the use of alcohol and any chemical or controlled substance can also result in a DUI/DWI charge.
