If you have a car that is used for business purposes, you should consider purchasing business car insurance. Business insurance allows you to cover anyone who is driving the car on company business at any time, which you can’t do under a typical personal insurance policy. The types of insurance that you can buy through a business policy are the same as the types of insurance you would buy for your personal vehicle, but they provide protection for your company as well as your employees if anyone is involved in an accident while on a company errand.

Business Car Insurance Covers Several Drivers at Once

Most companies that sell personal auto insurance also sell commercial auto. Some carriers you might recognize include 21st Century Car Insurance, Metlife and Farmers. When you purchase a business car insurance policy, you can choose between specific insurance and blanket insurance. A specific policy will insure only the people who are listed on the policy, but you can list as many people as you need to in order to make sure that everyone who drives the car is covered. A blanket policy would provide insurance for any employee of your business who has permission to drive the vehicle at any time. Most experts recommend that you select certain drivers rather than buy a blanket coverage policy, but your needs will vary depending on the type of work your company does.

Rates Change Depending on Number of Insured Vehicles

Insurance companies determine the rates for a business policy based on the number of vehicles that are being covered. If you only need business insurance for one or two cars, you will be better off insuring each of the cars separately. If your business owns several vehicles, however, you might want to consider fleet insurance instead. Fleet insurance policies typically save you money compared to insuring each car and truck separately. Your local insurance agent will be able to help you determine the number of vehicles that qualify for fleet coverage.

Vehicles Only Covered when Driven for Business Purposes

Unlike personal car insurance that provides coverage any time you drive your car, business car insurance is only in effect while you are driving the car for business purposes. Accidents that happen in the car when it is being driven for personal purposes leave you open to paying for the costs of injury or repair work out of your own pocket. You and your employee could also be vulnerable to a lawsuit if you are at fault for causing an accident while driving a business vehicle for purposes that are not business related. It is best to avoid driving company cars for any personal errands.

Business Premiums Vary Just like Personal Premiums

The cost of business car insurance can vary for the same reasons that personal car insurance costs vary. Your company will usually pay less for an insurance policy if it has been in business for several years. Newer companies tend to pay higher premiums because they have not established a reputation for safety yet. Traffic tickets and collisions can also cause your business car insurance rates to go up, just as they would increase your personal car insurance rates. Rates are also affected by the driving records of anyone named as a driver on the policy.

CarInsuranceQuotesComparison.com offers consumer resources and information designed to help drivers through an auto insurance comparison tool that helps them always find the best deal.

Copyright 2006 Leni Chauvin

Business networking is all about forming strong relationships built on mutual respect and trust. Those relationships are the basis for the single most important tool that we all need if we want to survive in the competitive 21st century.

I’m talking about referrals.

And today’s savvy business professionals know that–just as night follows day–networking leads to referral business.

Opportunities to network–to meet people for mutual support (and eventually referrals)–are everywhere. Here are just a few places to consider starting your networking efforts:

Professional Associations–Join your professional association. It’s a powerful source for richly rewarding contacts that can result in a tremendous number of referrals from people with a different specialty than yours.

If possible, join the professional association of your target market. Form those relationships. See and be seen among them and before you know it, you will be considered the “go-to” person in your industry.

Special interest groups–Whether you’re interested in sports, the Internet, politics, crafts, poetry, theater, travel, or underwater basket weaving, there are other people who share your interests. Ask around, look at your local newspaper listings or search the Internet for groups you can join.

Newcomers Clubs–If you’re new to a city and haven’t had the chance to meet many people yet, you’ll be delighted to learn that a lot of communities all over the world have clubs for people just like you.

Type your town or city and the term “newcomers club” into your favorite search engine and you’ll be able to tap into people who can help you start networking in your area.

Networking Events–Again, go to your favorite search engine. Type in your locale and the term “networking events.”

Your Local Newspaper–Review the business section of your local newspaper. Often they list upcoming events for the week in Monday’s edition. If you can’t find any networking opportunities listed there, call a business reporter and ask him or her to point you in the right direction. The call itself can be a very powerful networking moment.

Leads Groups–These are structured networking organizations usually limited to one person per occupation. The purpose is primarily to exchange business referrals, and the amount of business that comes from a well-run group can be staggering. I started and ran my own leads groups for over a decade and I know how powerful they can be in accelerating business growth.

Again, ask around for a good group in your area or search the search engines under “business networks,” “leads groups,” or “referral groups” plus your town or city’s name.

Workshops and Seminars–These can be wonderful networking opportunities, especially the ones that run over several days. Take advantage of the interactive exercises and the breaks to get to know other participants. Staying in touch after the event is over is key in deepening those relationships.

Volunteering–Do something good for others while creating lasting relationships with your volunteer colleagues. Knock people’s socks off with what you do as a volunteer and it will give people an indication of how you conduct your business. This will make you incredibly attractive to potential referral partners in the group.

Chamber of Commerce–Check out the networking opportunities that your local Chamber of Commerce offers. Also use them as a resource for finding other networking events in your community.

Parental Networking–Opportunities abound to meet people through your children. Weather you’re leading a Scout troop, chaperoning a dance, attending a soccer game, setting up carpools, or manning a booth at a bake sale, doesn’t matter. What matters is that it’s pretty well impossible not to create relationships with other parents when you are surrounded by them.

The Best Place to Network–The best place to network is always where members of your target market hang out.

Bottom Line: If you want more business, you need referrals, and if you want referrals, you need to network.

There are a lot of excuses floating around about why people don’t buy. Maybe you’ve heard some of them: it’s too expensive, it’s not at the top of my “must have” list right now, or even when a deals too good to be true… it’s too good to be true. Customer objections are more easily overcome than you might imagine. Let’s take a look at 3 simple ways to wipe out those objections.

1. It’s Too Expensive.
Don’t be fooled! Most of your customers can get the money to buy the product… it’s not a matter of having enough. Let’s face it… what they’re really saying is that they can get a better deal somewhere else, or a deal that gives them a better value for their buck.

Now, don’t give in to the temptation to drop your prices to “rock bottom” just because you hear them say it’s too expensive. There are ways to wipe out these objections without wiping out your profits!

Make it look like a better deal. I mean, take a really good look at your product. How can you increase the perceived value? Maybe you can add a manual, a CD, or a downloadable book full of information about the product. Let them think they are getting more for their buck, and the deal seems a lot sweeter to them.

Think about this… we all expect to pay more when we visit a specialist. Sure, Wal-Mart is great if we’re looking for a generic product, but when we want something from someone who knows what they’re talking about we head for a market “specialist”… and expect to pay a little more as part of the deal.

How can you become a specialist who demands respect, and can get away with slightly higher prices?

”	Find niches within your market to address. Hey, if you look closesly you’ll discover groups within your market that stand out… businessness men and women, young mothers, retirees, etc.

”	Dig in, do a little research and figure out exactly how your product relates to the special needs of these niche groups.

”	Speak to them as someone in the know. Revise your sales materials to address the specific needs of each group. Let them know you understand what they want and need, and watch your profits skyrocket.

2. I Have More Important Things To Get Right Now.
Yeah, buying now doesn’t seem too important until… the deal’s too sweet to pass up, and you have to get it today to get the deal.

What I’m talking about is banning the option of procrastination. Really what your customer is saying is … I have no reason to buy today. Make the deal irresistible, and put a deadline on it. It’ll spur them into making the purchase a priority, NOW.

3. I’m Skeptical… It’s Too Good To Be True.
Most customers have been burnt by deals that seem too good to be true… they ended up costing more than they were worth. The only way you’ll ever overcome the skepticism is to build a relationship of trust.

Unconditional money back guarantees eliminate the risk of loss, and show the customer that you are truly concerned with their satisfaction.

Let testimonials speak for you. Evidence that you’ve delivered and gained customer satisfaction in the past goes a long way toward banning customer fears.

Be available. Customers feel like everything is okay if they can pick up the phone or send an email and get quick answers to their questions.

It really doesn’t take a lot of rocket science to get through the shell of hard core customers. These 3 tips will get you off to a good start.

If you would like your business to employ highly motivated and high-energy level employees then investing in the workplace atmosphere and facilities will help and will reduce work-place stress significantly. Research confirms that if your employees are stressed then that will cost you even more money in missed workdays and increased on-the-job injuries over both the short term and the long term.

In addition to the negative repercussions of having stressed out employees, your business may be experiencing lower productivity and poor quality of output. It is both clear and obvious that some very cost effective strategies could minimize stress on the job and provide your employees with opportunities to reduce other stress related problems.

Below is a list of 6 ways in which you can help your company reduce stress for your employees while increasing the output of your business:

1. Provide an attractive and comfortable work environment whenever possible to reduce stress. Pleasant surroundings can do more for a persons attitude then we often realize. Create a less formal atmosphere by adding plants or improved decoration, even if that is just in a rest room it will help.

2. Supply a quiet room for your employees to take their breaks in. Not the canteen or games room, this room should be separate from the normal “hustle and bustle” of the work-place. It will give your employees an opportunity of a quick 10 minute break from work and anywork related stress that they may be experiencing.

3. Instead of giving orders 100% of the time try to create opportunities for employees to make decisions that will directly affect their job performance. This gives them a sense of personal power and less stress because they feel they have some control.

4. Thank your employees for work accomplished and recognize them for exemplary performance. A quick thank you will go a long way in reducing complaints and stress. Be genuine and only thank when workers have worked well otherwise you will be rewarding sub-standard activities.

5. Always choose ergonomically sound equipment, tools, and furniture. These will make work easier for your staff, reduce workplace injuries and therefore limit any compensation claims. In addition workplace stress will be reduced and staff, equipped with the correct tools, will be more productive.

6. Go out of your way to create opportunities for the employees to meet, socialize and build relationships away from work. Set up a bowling team from work where you gather and play once a week or maybe a softball team, or even a book club, for employees only.

When staff realize you have their interests in mind and are doing all you can to improve working conditions they will respond and you will see an improved atmosphere and productivity.

One of the attractions of working at home is the vision of freedom it invokes — no time clock, no time sheets, and no one to account to for how you spend your time. Yes, it is an attractive proposition, but like so many attractive propositions there is a heavy downside — you are likely wasting a lot of time.

My husband spends time every day filling out these large spreadsheets to account for his day. He works for a large engineering company and his day often encompasses work on a variety of projects for different clients. He loathes the activity and I have always dismissed it as a waste of time — that is until my home business recently took off and I realized there simply wasn’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all my goals.

I now have my own spread sheet and agenda for the day and I have improved my productivity and reduced my stress immeasurably. If you don’t think you need a schedule for your home business then think again — and read on.

After a spate of relatively unproductive days when my “To Do” list seemed to grow exponentially every time I looked at it I knew something had to change.

Granted I was going through a rough patch. My home business was experiencing growing pains and taking up more than the usual time, my four-year-old was only in preschool part-time, my husband wasn’t pulling his weight on the home front, and my extended family was experiencing a number of crises. But I’m also old enough to know there is never a perfect time in life — you just live the one you’ve got. These are simply the problems I’m dealing with this year. Next year these problems will be traded in for new fresh ones.

After studying my time and chatting with some other work-at-home folks, I discovered five reasons to embrace the schedule:

1. It’s too easy to waste time doing nonpriority tasks
2. It’s too easy to get sidetracked or distracted from your current task
3. Unscheduled work time can often overlap into your free time until you don’t have any free time at all
4. Your free time can overlap into your work time until you fall behind with important projects
5. Concentrating your time and effort on highest priority projects means more gets done

I’m not the only work at home business person encompassing the schedule. I recently took part in an online forum where men and womenhad moved to embrace it — and found it more freeing than restrictive. After all, you are still the one setting the schedule so you are free to schedule yourself off for a 3-hour lunch, an afternoon, or a whole day whenever you choose.

If you find it difficult setting up your schedule and priorities for the day and week then perhaps your significant other or a friend can help you set your schedule.

Nobody benefits when profit is eliminated from the economic equation.

With the economy on the mend, a lot of people in the material handling industry are expecting good times without having to make any changes in the way they do business. Unfortunately, that means the continuation of one particular practice that played a major role in getting the economy in trouble a few years back.

When the “dot.coms” were flying high, they experienced rapid growth by the simple method of offering impossibly low prices and constant expansion into markets about which they knew nothing. They operated at a loss for years on end, promising investors that it would all turn around when they had achieved sufficient market share. Eventually, of course, this “lose a little on each deal but make it up in volume” business model blew up in their faces. The balloons popped, one by one, and the economy followed them down the tube.

In the material handling industry, this discredited business model is still very much in evidence. Too many companies have played the merger game, getting themselves involved in markets that they know nothing about. Too many have played the numbers game, moving money from one pocket to another to make themselves look good for one more quarter (this is called managing for stockholder value), totally forgetting about long-range planning.

Worst of all, too many companies have bought into the concept of forgoing profits in pursuit of market share, with the idea of becoming profitable once the competition is eliminated. It’s called “buying a job,” meaning submitting a bid that allows for little or no profit. Theoretically, this has two benefits. It gets you the job, which makes your sales figures (if not your profits) look impressive. More importantly, for some people, it prevents your competition from getting the job.

But let’s look at the downside. Without profits, you have no money to invest in research and development, capital expenditures, etc. Your growth is all on paper, and will disappear as soon as you run out of money to buy jobs with.

With minimal profit margins, you have neither the money nor the inclination to service the sale after it is made. The result is an unhappy customer, and that is never good news for the long term prospects of your company.

Finally, let’s say that your strategy of underbidding the competition works, and your nearest competitor goes bankrupt. What happens? Somebody buys his assets for 25 cents on the dollar and opens a new business. Since his initial investment was so low, he can undercut your prices. You haven’t eliminated competition, you’ve made it worse.

Profit is not a dirty word. Nobody — least of all the customer — benefits when profit is eliminated from the economic equation. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be looking for efficiencies that will allow us to keep prices down while maintaining a reasonable profit margin. Of course the customer benefits from lower prices, but the economy in general and the material handling industry in particular will be much healthier when we all admit to wanting our fair share. If you’re satisfied with a 3% profit, I suggest you buy a government bond. It’s safer.

Customer service, how I loathe thee. Let me count the ways. The never-ending loop of obnoxious hold music. The pressure to buy new products and services. The poor-quality, outsourced call to a distant land.

A call to customer service can be an infuriating ending to a frustrating experience. Youre upset and looking for empathy, but all you encounter is disappointment. Could Company X have done something differently? Probably, but if you follow these tips when dealing with customer service, youll be in the drivers seat for the next dispute.

1. Be prepared.

Seems basic, right? Unless youve called Company X several times, youre probably not familiar with their required information. Have every tracking number, account number, itemized statement, and order number before you call. Customer service representatives are held responsible for torturous call-handling metrics designed by masochistic management. Length of call, resolution (if the customer calls back to the company within an allocated amount of time), and randomly monitored calls are measured stringently. Bottom line: they want to help you quickly and completely, lest a superior crack a whip.

2. Be nice.

Customer service representatives speak with upset, irritated, and/or irate people all day. Every day. You may not agree with a credit denial, but screaming the customer is always right, (expletive)! will not help. Be pleasant and the rules may be malleable. Be another unpleasant customer and the guidelines will be set in stone.

3. Know when to call, know when to write.

If you need to request a price quote, add/remove a feature, or ask for explanation of a bill, e-mail is the most efficient route for your correspondence. For repair concerns or credit requests, call customer service. Repair specialists will need to troubleshoot and get access information should a technician need to be dispatched. Credit requests can be handled via e-mail, however, it is easier to reply with a credit denied form letter than to deny credit to a real, live person.

4. Get on record.

If something is not working properly, call the company immediately. If there is a cable, satellite, or phone outage, Company X will only be able to diagnose and correct the problem if they are notified a problem exists. This also establishes a record of communication should you need to request a credit or refund at a later date.

5. Be persistent, but not obnoxious.

Many companies have guidelines for dispensing credit that require denial the first time for any request that is not a previously-reported out of service issue or a known billing error. The second time a credit request is made, these guidelines can be relaxed. If you have followed the be nice tip above, you may be rewarded with your credit request.

Following these five tips will help you get what you want in the most efficient manner possible. Stay tuned for the next installment to find out how you can aggravate the customer service experience and actually delay resolution!

Its amazing what a well-written and nicely presented resume can do for your job search. Before you send yours out, follow this checklist to ensure you are sending out an excellent quality representation of yourself.

1. Grammar, spelling, punctuation – Use the grammar and spell check function, then print it out and read the document word for word. Spell checker doesnt know that you meant “manager” when you actually typed “manger.”

2. Capitalization – Use a manual such as the Gregg Reference Manual if you do not know capitalization rules.

3. Punctuation – Check for proper use of commas and semi-colons. Again, if you are unsure, refer to the Gregg Reference Manual.

4. Run-on sentences – Check to make sure you do not have run-ons that are hard to read.

5. Consistency – You must be consistent with your number usage (dates, money, numbers), plurals, and abbreviations. For example, dont list one date as 8/2004 and then list another date as 3/15/2004. Also, be aware of listing software consistently (abbreviation use). MS Word and Microsoft Outlook are both correct, but not consistent.

6. Education section – When you have a degree, list only the year that you obtained your degree. When you list your dates, (i.e.: 9/1998 to 1/2002) many resume-scanning systems will not recognize that you obtained a degree, only that you attended college for a period of time.

7. Ampersands – Ampersands (&) do not belong on a resume. There are a few exceptions. One exception is a well-known company name (AT&T). Another exception is well-known industry terms (P&L).

8. Hyperlinks – All e-mail and web addresses that you list need to be deactivated in your resume. To do this in MS Word, highlight the link, go to the “Insert” drop down menu, scroll down to and click “Hyperlink”, and on the lower left-had side of this screen there should be a little button that says “Remove link”, when you find it, give it a little click and voila! Alternatively, you can highlight the link, right click on it, and scroll down to “remove link” to deactivate the link.
