Colorado License Plates

1913 was the first year Colorado issued their license plates. Before this, cities would issue numbers and you made your own plate.

The 1913, 1914, and 1915 Colorado license plates were made of porcelain.

The numbers on the 1919 and 1920 Colorado plates were individually cut pieces. They were then spot welded on the heavy license plate blank.

1920 large county plates were very large. Some measured 5 1/2" X 16", while others measured 6" X 14" with numbers 5/8" wide and 4" tall.

The 1931, 1932, 1933, and 1934 Colorado license plates were stamped of very heavy metal and were very difficult to bend.

County numbers first appeared on plates in 1932.

1948 Colorado license plates were made of aluminum and were therefore very easily damaged.

1950 Colorado license plates had a very thin layer of paint. Because of this, the slightest dust or sand storm immediately chipped off the plate.

"Colorful" first appeared in 1950, dropped in 1956, reappeared in 1958, dropped in 1959 and reappeared in 1973.

The outline of the Colorado Rocky Mountains appeared on the 1960, 1962-1972, and 1974 plates.

The picture of the Skier appeared in 1958 and disappeared in 1959.

County numbers disappeared from Colorado license plates in 1959.

In 1971, Colorado license plates began using reflectorized material on the coating of the license plates.

For the years 1975 and 1976, a special Centennial-Bicentennial license plate was issued.

The special issue had the State Centennial-Bicentennial emblem, and the colors were red, white and blue for the license plates.
In 1977, Colorado began issuing license plates on a staggered, year around basis.

In 1989, Colorado began issuing Designer license plates. These plates are blue on white and are a multi-year plate with validating tabs that are issued on a staggered, year around basis.

My name is Gregory Tripp and I am originally from Michigan. My grandfather who lived in Jackson Michigan and built his own home there collected his plates during his lifetime. They start around 1915 and go to the 1980's. They are all exactly the way he had them in a box in the attic. I have many doubles and some years I even have 4 sets of doubles for the same year. Seems he had 2, 3 and 4 cars at a time that may have been plated.

Ohio License Plates

One of the best things about the collection of vintage license plates is that its manufacture date is rarely in question. This is due to the fact that the year of the plate or the registration of the car is clearly placed on the plate itself. This easily validates the age of the license plate.

It would be noteworthy that it was in 1903 that license plates were first issued. From 1912 to 1915, Alabama issued license plates made of porcelain. These are a great collectors item. These types of plates, as well as those dating around this time, as long as they are in good condition, could still fetch a good sum of money.

Some collectors prefer to complete their collection of all states' plates. Rare Ohio license plates, Florida license plates, antique Arkansas license plates, vintage Alabama license plates, etc. This is a truly an exhilarating experience for passionate plate collectors to be able to complete their precious collection.

Members of one of the most popular groups involved in license plate collecting believe that it is the most enjoyable hobby on the planet. That may be debatable to you but not to them. Collecting license plates may be found by many to be an odd thing to do but you will be surprised that there are many of them worldwide. In fact, it is not only the collectors that are many but even the sellers abound.

If you will open the Internet, you can easily find a lot of rare and antique license plates for sale. There are many ways to find these plates. You may choose to do it the hard way, which is by scouting from dumps, junkyards and scrap yards of automobiles or sit in front of your computer, which is very convenient, browsing the net for various online stores that sell authentic rare plates or going to antique shops and flea markets.

Today's oldest license plate dates about the 1900s. Getting these types of plates may be a little harder. Their prices differ according to the plate's condition, age, history, shape and origin. For instance, there are many out there who prefer to collect Rare Florida License Plates. There are also those who prefer to get plates from other states only. There are also some who want to collect plates from all states. Reasons vary and preferences differ. Interesting Facts About Florida License Plates

Florida began issuing license plates in 1918. .
From 1938 to 1977, plate numbers used a numeric county code prefix.
The codes were originally assigned by population.
Dade county got number 1
Duval county got number 2, and so on up to 67, which went to rural Liberty County.

Florida License Plates

1982 Florida License Plate Error

Back in January, we did a blog post on License Plates with Errors. One of our readers, Colin, left a comment about a plate he came across that we thought was very interesting. We wanted to share it with our readers so Colin was nice enough to send us some pictures and he also told us about how he came across the Error Plate. Below is Colin's story and a picture of his 1982 Florida License Plate....

In 1982, I transferred from New York To Tampa, Florida. One of the Tag Offices (they call them auto tags in Florida not Plates) in Tampa was located in the Hillsborough County Court House. This is where I re-registered my car. I didn't notice anything at the time, but when I went to put it on my car I noticed the state was upside down. It stayed on my car until a new one was issued in 1987.

As you can see, this is a great plate and a great story from Colin and we appreciate him sending us the story and picture of his 1982 Florida License Plate Error. Some will wonder or ask if this plate has value and of course it does! How much? Well that always depends! Collectors or investors could be looking for a particular state plate or maybe the collector collects plates with upside down graphics!
