I have spent the past two weekends hiking and climbing mountains near my home in Vancouver, British Columbia. I believe that British Columbia has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world and since the summer is the best time of year to enjoy the outdoors here in Vancouver, I go on a lot of weekend trips.

I was with my boyfriend and some friends both weekends. We hiked with tents, sleeping bags, food and so forth so we could camp overnight. It's not very comfortable sleeping on a thin mat in a tent, but it's worth it! Nothing compares to the beauty of the wilderness and the smell of the fresh mountain air.

This weekend, I'm hoping to go on a kayaking and hiking trip somewhere on Vancouver Island. This is the perfect time of year to spot whales and porpoises in the Pacific Ocean.

One of the most satisfying aspects of being involved with The Linguist is the quality of our learners, and I should also say, our tutors. The one word that describes just about all of us is enthusiasm. I met AJ through the web because he has his own blog called effortlesslanguage. I have never met him face to face. He is a language teacher in Los Angeles and a learner of Spanish. He is now one of the tutors with The Linguist. Here is the first part of a discussion that I had with AJ on a variety of subjects.

One of the ideas behind The Linguist is that listening, and especially repetitive listening will help your speaking. One of our students, Kolbjorn, who works as an administrator in a university in Norway, discusses this and other issues with me in three parts which I call The Power of Listening part 1, part 2 and then part 3. We also have a brief digression into Scandinavian which is a separate link called audiobooks in Scandinavian. Kolbjorn explains his frustration at being able to understand English but being unable to speak comfortably. He explains how repetitive listening at The Linguist helped him.

He also points out the advantage of The Linguist in that it allows the learner to use free moments during each day to learn and improve. The discussion also covers a little about life in Norway and other subjects.
