Mr. Eric Bidelman with GJC IT Studes

To enhance their knowledge of the latest trends in information technology, the 3rd Year BSIT students attended the 2011 Google DevFest held last September 19 at the Asian Institute of Management.

The first topic that had been discussed was the Android Market. It was elaborated by Mr. Anchor, one of the computer experts.

Mr. Anchor talked about the progress of the Android, and how market licensing works. Android is an operating system compatible with mobile phones and tablet PCs only.

The next speaker was Mr. Eric Bidelman who talked about HTML 5. He introduced to the attendees the additional features of HTML 5 such as the added attributes and tags that can now be used.

Another speaker, Mr. Ernest Delgado, shared additional information on HTML 5, such as online and offline tags and other key data.

Mr. Bidelman had another talk, this time about modern web applications. He had a demo on how DJ Breakpoint was built using Javascript.

The last topic that had been tackled was Google Maps, and he demonstrated how to explore these online map made up of satellite images.

After each discussion, the audience were given time to ask questions regarding the topic for further understanding.

BSBA seniors attend biz summit

Fourth Year BSBA students majoring in Marketing Management attended the 3^rd Young Entrepreneurs Summit themed “Witness A Life-Changing Summit!” held at the World Trade Center last September 23.

The school’s delegation was accompanied by their instructresses Mrs. Cindy Cruz and Ms. Lorelei Alarcon.

The seminar, as stated by GoNegosyo founder Jose Conception, aims to gather the country’s inspiring and influential speakers to encourage young entrepreneurs and professionals.

The summit featured inspirational messages by former presidential candidate Gibo Teodoro Jr., Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa and Mr. Manny V. Pangilinan of PLDT- SMART. Also present as panelist for the summit was Dr. Patricia Licuanan of the Commission on Higher Education.

Some of the topics covered during the talks include graphic designing, photography, tattooing, blogging, online advertising, events management, culinary arts, t-shirt printing, fashion

designing, pet grooming, and setting up a spa.

Featured speakers were Bro. Bo Sanchez, Mike Enriquez, Josiah Go, Henry Tenedero, Michael Angelo Lobrin and Rosselle Ambubuyog. Speakers in the Youth forum, on the other hand were Bam Aquino, Cristalle Henares, Kenneth Cobonpue, Dylan Wilk, Illac Diaz, Rj David and the man behind Mang Inasal, Injap Sia.

According to BSBA IV student Roan Diaz, a participant in the summit, the speakers inspired and motivated the attendees to move up, and go for success in life.

Another BSBA IV student, Jelly Arcenas adds that it developed in them a mindset change as they experienced the power of positivity with the Young Entrepreneur Summit’s Mindset Seminar.

GJC: Overall Champion in the region

General de Jesus College emerged as the overall academic champion in the 15^th Region III Convention of the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants held at Fort Ilocandia Resort and Hotel, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte last September 23 – 25.

Champions in the Academic Level in their respective categories were: Ernalyn Cariaga, champion in the Sycip, Gorres and Velayo Cup; Bryan Barlis, champion in Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) Cup – Level 3 (Taxation and Payroll Accounting); and Czareth Castro, champion in KPMG Practical Accounting 1 Quiz Bee.

On the other hand, Alyssa de Guzman grabbed 3^rd place in the Basic Accounting Wizard Quiz Bee. Jenifer Lapuz also bagged the 3^rd place in the Isla Lipana - Management Advisory Services and Business Law and Taxation Quiz Bee, while Merwyn Viloria and Sarah Jane landed 6^th and 7^th places respectively.

Ernalyn Cariaga won 3^rd place while John Lyndon Rayos got the 7^th place in CAT Level 2 (Management and Cost Accounting). Meanwhile, in the CAT Level 1 – Basic and Financial Accounting, Carlo de Rueda and Czareth Jane Castro both won the 7^th place, with Jennevie Crisostomo getting the 8^th place in Review School of Accountancy (RESA Cup).

In the Punong Bayan and Araullo Auditing Quiz, Jill Louise Divina and Sarah Jane Cucio emerged as the 8^th and 10^th placers respectively.

On the other hand, in the Philippine Reporting Accounting Standards (PFRS Meet Standards), only 31 students were able to qualify – seven from General de Jesus College of which four were in the Top 10. The seven qualifiers were: Czareth Jane Castro, 10^th place; Carlo de Rueda, 8^th place; Allan Reyes, 7^th place; Merwyn Viloria, 3^rd place; Ernalyn Cariaga; Bryan Barlis; and Jill Louise Divina.

Meanwhile, in the Non-Academic Level, Louielyn Empaynado garnered 2^nd place in Essay Writing, Filipino Category.

Due to these awards, the school was consequently ranked No. 4 in both academic and non-academic levels of the said convention participated by 20 colleges and universities in Region 3 offering accountancy programs.

GJC outshined different universities and colleges within the country as it bagged major awards in the recently concluded 14^th National Mid Year Convention at La Carmela Resort and Restaurant, Malay, Aklan, Boracay Island last October 24-28.

Leading the victory is Czareth Jane Castro, BSA III, who emerged as the champion in the CAT Cup Level III, covering Income Taxation and

Business and Transfer Tax and ranked 4^th place in CAT Cup Level I which covers Basic Accounting and Financial Accounting.

Adding to the fame is Ernalyn Cariaga, 3^rd place in CAT Cup Level II, which covers Cost Accounting and Management and Advisory Services, followed by Bryan Barlis who ranked 10^th place in Level III, both from BSA, 4^th Year. They were accompanied by Miss Gernalyn Reyes.

During the eliminations, Castro placed 1^st in the CAT Cup Level III and 2^nd place in Level II, followed by Barlis who ranked 2^nd in the Level III and Cariaga, 4^th place in Level II. Because of their winnings, our school was awarded the “Excellence Awards in Academics-Local Chapter” among different prominent universities and colleges offering BS in Accountancy and Region III as the “Most Awarded in Academics”.

Also, GJC brought home the prestigious “CAT Revolving Cup 2011”, an award that is handed down every year to the school who will garner the highest points in CAT Cup Series. GJC was able to ‘steal’ that award from NCR, the last year’s title holder.

The three students were chosen by the Regional Council of National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants to represent the region in the said contest, as the school delegation then was hailed as the “Over All Academic Champion” in Region III.

BEEd posts 65.52%, BSEd 100% in September 2011 LET

As against the national average passing rate of 22.68%

The school’s Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) graduates posted a 65.52% passing rate in the 2011 Licensure Examinations for Teachers (LET) last September 25, as against the national passing rate of 22.68%, while the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) examinees made it again with a 100%.

General de Jesus College ranked 2^nd among the colleges that fielded examinees in the province, next to Central Luzon State University.

Agimat ni Apo spreads to GJC

The “Agimat ni Apo” Leadership Seminar-Workshop was held on August 13 at the GJC gym. Student leaders from both the high school and college departments attended the whole-day confab.

Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, program director of the Ateneo Center for Family Ministries, was the resource speaker. In his talk, Fr. Gonzales stressed the importance for a leader to think first before saying something and to set goals which are achievable.

Ms. Mary Herbel Santiago, AHON Foundation program officer, shared her own experience of how she graduated from Ateneo de Manila University despite coming from a family with financial difficulties. Santiago recounted how she worked part-time jobs, from teaching English to Korean nationals, to covering the UAAP games for an online em -ployer to augment her scholarship stipend. She then urged the students to never give up in the face of trials.

Other speakers were seasoned learning facilitator Mr. Hector Villegas, Jr; Mr. Cid Leandro Jacobo, Kaya Natin (KN) documenter; and Mr. Jess Lorenzo, KN-Nueva Ecija program coordinator.

According to the speakers, an effective leader must possess six gems (agimat) or qualities: confidence in times of crisis, honest assessment of resources and strength, responsibility to become part of the solution, integrating principle and purpose, solidarity to become partners in nation-building and true investment to build character and excellence.

The forum used lecture presentations, sharing, personal reflection and structured-learning activities. The confab ended with an ecumenical service officiated by Fr. Gonzales.

GJC celebrates Buwan ng Wika

Students from different courses performed in celebration of the Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa last August

26 at the gymnasium.

The program, themed “Ang Filipino ay Wikang Panlahat Ilaw at Lakas Tuwid na Landas”, showcased performances that highlighted our rich cultural heritage.

CSC Executive Secretary Angeline Bedrijo led the invocation, after which the show started off with the opening remarks of Mrs. Leilani Castro, area coordinator for Filipino.

First to perform was Jill Toribio, a BSHRM-II student, who rendered a vocal solo of the nationalistic “Isang Lahi” followed by a speech by Angelica Enriquez of BSA-IA.

Four folk dances were featured: Lapay Bantigue, performed by BSBA-I; Maglalatik, presented by BSIT students; Jota Quirino by BSA and BSAcT students; and the Subli, perfomed by BEED and BSED students.

Other performances were a skit enacted by BEED-I students and directed by Cherry Gomez and Avegael Fernando; a sabayang pagbigkas of Patrocinio Villafuerte’s piece “Ako’y Isang Wika” by BSED-I students; a duet rendition of the song “Hanggang Ngayon” by Jill Toribio of BSHRM-II and Kevin Mana of BSIT-II; and a declamation by BSA-IA student Charmaine Ignacio.

Easily one of the event’s crowd pleasers was the Pasaringan by Education students Lalaine Sulit, Leah Perez, Diosa Marie Vicencio, Noel Dionisio, John Edward Flores, and Jonathan Boquiran. In a Pasaringan, the participants taunt each other with wit and excellent command of the Filipino language.

If you consider yourself a grown-up person you better FINISH READING this article. But if you’ll say that you’re a child, then, STOP READING. You don’t have to. Please proceed to the next article and let’s just see each other in the next issue of this paper. Thanks for your time, bye bye.

So you are a grown-up. You kept reading, didn’t you? And if you are, then you probably have no time to draw a sheep, or a flower, or a box. You no longer laugh at clowns. You’d rather hear figures than metaphors, right? Of course. ‘Cause grown-ups love figures. If I say," I saw a house with glass doors and on the window sills there are geraniums and on the roof there are doves and the house was so huge and the ceiling…” you probably won’t get the picture. Not with much appreciation. But if I say,” I saw a house worth 10 Million Pesos.” Now you’ll get the picture so clearly and immediately that you’ll exclaim, “Oh! What a beautiful house that is!” Our imaginations do work at the sound of a figure, huh?

Antoine Marie Roger de Saint-Exupéry, a writer and a pilot, wrote a book entitled “The Little Prince” which had been sold at more than 50 Million copies since its publication in 1943 and still selling a million copies each year. It is a fantasy novel classified as a children’s book. So how does a seemingly simple tale about a pilot who crashed in a desert and made acquaintance and friendship with a little prince who came from another planet called asteroid B-612 which is scarcely as large as a house compete in the overcrowded market of children’s books? Maybe because the approach used was comical, but the whole story is a huge allegory. If you have read the story, great. We won’t have a hard time as I walk you to a path where my words are leading you. But if you haven’t, you BETTER DO. NOW. Or else you’d be missing three-fourths of your life. Nope, I’m definitely not a paid advertiser here. I’m just like you, a grown-up, who, four years ago, happened to come across the book “The Little Prince”, and it sure changed my way of thinking, of seeing things. That night, just after reading, I found something wonderful outside my window. I hope you find it, too.

Among the hundreds of books I’ve read, The Little Prince is the one book that really grabbed me and glued me to my seat and made me admit that I am, after all, a grown-up. And what’s in being a grown-up? We look at things too broadly and too closely that we see even the tiniest atoms of it but failed to enjoy the beauty of just staring at it from afar, say, a flower, or just indulge in the pleasure of its fragrance. Every line in the book teaches the readers valuable insights. One scene in the story is the prince visiting a king, who is all alone in his small planet. The king doesn’t want to be left alone so when the prince said his goodbyes, he promised to make the prince his Minister of Justice. The prince didn’t see the point and told the king that there was no one to judge in that planet. So the King told him, “Then you shall judge yourself. It is much more difficult to judge one’s self than to judge others. If you succeeded in judging yourself rightly, then you are indeed a man of true wisdom.” I actually laughed at the King’s response; he sure finds a good reason to keep the prince, but seconds later, I realized how true those lines were.

“It is a time that you’ve wasted for your rose that makes your rose important.” In this line, grown-ups should realize the reason why we won’t exchange some people and some things for any other in the world—even if they are of the same kind or even if the others out there are better. There are millions of mothers, fathers, brothers, friends, girlfriends, boyfriends and pets and dried flowers and old pictures and candy wrappers out there, but we choose to keep and stay with the ones we have because they are important. It’s not really because of what they are, or what they have. The reason behind is the times we’ve spent with those people and those particular things. The memories. So don’t wonder if someone or something doesn’t stay with you for good. If you want to keep them, you need to have time for the things that you value. “Only the children know what they are looking for.

They waste their time over a rag doll and it becomes important to them and if anybody takes it away, they cry.”

And the grown-ups wonder why children cry over a rag doll. “No grown-up will ever understand that it is a matter of so much importance.”

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” We decide to keep our eyes open all the time. That’s what grown-ups do. We’re scared of missing anything, of not seeing everything. But at the end of the day, why are we still running, searching? Because the truth is, we’ve found nothing. Because we look at too many objects we don’t know what we’re really looking for. We thought we could watch a sunrise and at the same time stare at our shadows. And we care too much on pleasing other people that we smile even if our insides call for a cry, and we cry even if what we really want is to laugh out loud. There’s too much hypocrisy in being a grown-up.

A part says, “Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shop. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no more friends anymore.” How true. Children find friends by playing and having picnics and sharing sandwiches and climbing trees together and teasing and making faces and putting tongues out and playing again. Grown-ups, by closing deals. Everyone has a price. Maybe one day a businessman will put up a shop where one can buy friends. That would be a hit.

You are a grown up. What do you own? Are you happy with what you have? How did you get what you own? There’s a part on the book where a businessman talks to the prince and says, “When you find a diamond that belongs to nobody, it is yours. When you discover an island that belongs to nobody, it is yours. When you get an idea before anyone else, you take out a patent on it: it is yours.” Have you found something that nobody owns and you ended up owning it? Usually, we find things owned by somebody else and we find a great deal of happiness getting it, and owning it. Because grown-ups can’t think of anything that is not yet owned by anybody and that which will cause them happiness.

“All grown-ups were once children although few of them remember it. ”Sometimes it is worth it to see things in a child’s view. They are smaller and they look up to the world and they see things differently. Better than how we do, because our sights are covered with fog and probably, clouds, because we’ve grown too tall. Just too tall.

“I own the stars because nobody else before me ever thought of owning them.” After reading the book, I tried following this line. I just gazed outside my window and there they are. I count the stars, and the stars I’ve counted become mine. That simple. Whenever I feel something’s wrong or when I have problems, I just gaze at my stars and instantly, I’ll feel better. And even when I’m in a good mood, I still gaze at my stars; I become happier. Yes, I still do a lot of grown-up stuffs. Things that are usually stressful or things that give me happiness which cost too much which ends up in discontentment. I’m glad I have my stars. When I have no one to talk to or laugh with my stars would be there. It’s amazing how one finds happiness in very simple and common things.

Because now, I already own 105 stars!

For my rose’s getting hurt, I’m so scared

Around her I put up walls for protection

To drive the insects away, I tried hard

My precious rose looked withered

They only brought doubt

and distrust for others

These walls blocked the sunlight

that would have hardened her

Opportunity of seeing great things

A Typical Day in the Life of a GJCian

Dear Diary,

Phew! It’s been a tiring day, dear diary! I have been very busy in the past few weeks here at General de Jesus College that I’ve forgotten writing on you lately. No, I’m not lying to you!

You know what? My first day at GJC as a college freshman was full of new experiences. In the morning of the first day we introduced ourselves to class one by one, and I was thrilled that I have met new people instantly, including my kind teachers.

At first, I had this uncalled for fear as I asked myself some questions. What if my teachers are bossy? What if my classmates are mean and would make fun of me? What if the school facilities are in poor condition? To my surprise, all these fears were answered instantly as my classmates cheered for me as I struggled for words to speak. I found my teachers to be supportive and kind as well. And I discovered that the school facilities are in superb condition.

How silly of me to be initially pessimistic.

Speaking of facilities, I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that there are not only one, not two, but three libraries here! Not only these, I also found out that there are state-of-the-art computer laboratories, clean restrooms and an orderly canteen as well.

And you know what else? There are so many opportunities to develop myself here at GJC. There are these clubs: Language Club, Math Club, Science Club and a non-academic club called GLC Club. Our instructors encouraged us to join these clubs so as to be able to improve ourselves and share our talents as well.

I could say that our instructors here at GJC truly have passion for teaching. I could really see and feel that they are living up to the school’s mission to make us useful, civic-minded, and morally upright in the service of God and country. They sure know how to “nurture young dreams” and “educate the total person” How can I say so? Because we’ve seen constant improvement in ourselves even after just a few months at GJC.

So far, our class has already participated in a medical mission. We had lots of performances that require effort, coordination and teamwork among us students. What am I to say? I can only say that I’m impressed. I am happy that I chose General de Jesus College to be my future alma mater. I am sure that in the next years I will have a journey that is bound to be fun, exciting and inspiring. Needless to say, dear Diary, I have made I wise decision by coming to study here at GJC.

This is My Home

Taking another step is a new chapter. At first, I was so confused – I was pondering some questions on my mind such as “Where should I study?” and “What course will I take?” These were the things that my mind had to struggle with as I finished my high school days and it dawned upon me that I would be facing a new bigger world – COLLEGE LIFE.

Yes, sometimes life seems to be filled with confusions. It’s like we’re driving a car, not knowing where we really want to go. Confronted with this kind of situation, I did something which you can do as well whenever you are confronted with difficult decision-making. I PRAYED! And as I prayed, I realized that I should first ask myself, “What do I want to be in the future?” I have to know WHAT and WHERE I want to reach…

In my dreams, I really want to be a great pianist someday who plays sweet and harmonious music. I wanted to be a choir directress. In our church, I am part of the music ministry. I used to play the keyboard and every time I hear its sounds, I feel joy – JOY that triumphs within my heart. Even though I wasn’t given a chance to study in a formal music school, I am so thankful. At least, I can play music in my own ways. And I believe that someday, like the select few who could play the piano with such style and mastery, I would also be able to create music that would touch the hearts of many. It is not so much a matter of what we were “gifted to do” as it is what we have given ourselves to do with a whole heart. My dream to become a great pianist still remains.

I am also a Sunday School teacher in our church – teaching street children how to become closer to God. I am not teaching them how to read, write or use the computer, rather I teach my students how to walk in the light of God. And then I realized that if I haven’t got the chance to study in a music school and pursue my dream to be a pianist, maybe there are things that I would rather be doing and dreams that I would rather accomplish. Now I’m beginning with this end in mind as an Education student aspiring to become a teacher. I realized that I have the passion to teach. I found my reason for existence – to live a life – a useful, worthy and well-rounded life! And from this perspective, I am a fortunate person for I love what I am now learning.

I am now taking up Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and I chose to study here at General de Jesus College for some reasons.

When I was in fourth-year high school, I took up entrance examinations in many universities, including the University of the Philippines. Luckily, I passed the UPCAT. Many would say that if you’re a graduate from UP or other prestigious universities, you won’t have to look for employment; the jobs will look for you. But if you graduated from a college in the province, they’d say that it would be hard to look for a job. Their reason is simple: competition is too keen.

But my decision to study here at GJC is not based on these hearsays. It’s based on my own perspective. Honestly, I studied here because I want to prove to myself and to everyone that graduates from a community college like GJC can make a difference. And General de Jesus College, through the years, have consistently provided quality education comparable to the best schools in the region, as can be surmised from its graduates who have proven themselves in their respective fields.

Besides, I prefer to study in a nearby school because I want to focus on my church ministries. I still want to continue playing the keyboard and teaching small children while I am studying. My dreams depend on who I am and what I am capable of. Even though I didn’t study in UP, I know that I still got the chance to be successful.

GJC is a private school with a heart for their students and I, as a GJCian, is proud to say that “THIS IS MY HOME.” A home where I could learn a lot of things and which could help me become a better person and draw out the best in me.

FYHRM celebrates its 3rd year

Three years had gone so fast. I still reminisce about the time when I first saw McHotel being designed and constructed. I was standing in front of it, and the words that crossed my mind were “I will build my career here!”.

Oh, I’m daydreaming again! Hmmmm… Who will forget the moment when we were still freshmen in our chosen course? All at hand is new and fresh. All are bare from experiences, excited for new adventures and of course, very eager to gain expertise. From the first public appearance to the first attended seminar, we cannot deny the fact that we’re all frightened and nervous about what would be the outcome of our efforts. Yet all of these are worth remembering and took great significance in our lives. Still, what is more rewarding is to see your family expand through the years, and along with the harmonious feeling aroused in each member. And that treatment inspires you to lead and guide everyone in such friendly environment not only to give them happiness but also to gain confidence and acquaintance.

And this year 2011, the Federation of Young Hoteliers and Restaurant Managers (FYHRM), in celebration of its 3^rd year as an organization, conducted its General Assembly last July 23 at the GJC gymnasium. The assembly came to be a big event wherein members actively participated in a whole-day program which featured intermission numbers from each year level, games and the induction of officers.

The highlight of this year’s assembly was the much anticipated “Ms. HRM Bebot 2011” wherein guys from each year level were transformed into “beautiful ladies”. Like a real pageant, candidates had to undergo modeling, present a production number, take part in the talent portion and walk the ramp in their sportswear and cocktail dresses.

Paulo Palon a.k.a. “Paulina Maria Palon” (BSHRM I) got the title of being the first ever reigning Ms. HRM Bebot. Palon was followed by Michael Gonzales a.k.a. “Mikaela Precious Gonzales” (BSHRM III), 1^st Runner-up; Alvin de Guzman a.k.a. “Margarita Vodka Martini” (BSHRM III), 2^nd Runner-up; and Mark Torrejos a.k.a. “Mariel Cristine Torrejos” (BSHRM II), 3^rd Runner-up.

Special awards were also given to the candidates. Palon was chosen as Ms. Photogenic, Gonzales was picked as Best in Talent, De Guzman as Best in Sports Wear while Torrejos received the Best in Cocktail Dress award.

JPIA holds 3rd General Assembly

Mr. Jeffrey Franco, Accountancy Department Head,

shares some pointers on how to succeed in one’s studies.

On July 30, 2011, at the college gymnasium, the Junior Philippine Insitute of Accountants (JPIA) held its third annual general assembly. The activities of the said event were prepared by the officers of the organization with the president, Mr. Aljon Sta. Ana, BSA 3, leading the group. Miss Gernalyn Reyes, the new adviser of the organization, helped and guided the officers in the preparation and in the celebration of the program. Each part and activity aimed to give the members a better understanding of the existence of the organization, and also, to create camaraderie in the department.

The program consisted of an opening prayer song; opening remarks by Mr. Jeffrey Franco; intermission numbers by each section; achievements of the JPIA-GJC on the term of the last set of officers by former JPIA-GJC President, Miss Cindy Santiago, BSAcT 4; recognition of the last set of officers; oath taking of the new set of officers; Accounting seminar by Mr. Jeffrey Ebio; games; team building; special recognition to BSA 4; bingo social; and special awards which really brought laughter to the faces of the winners and of the whole audience: Angry bird of the day award, Mr. Cobra award, Mister and Miss Romantico award, and a whole lot more.

The program was facilitated by the two emcee’s: Miss Shery Ann Rivera and Miss Charinette Padolina, both from BSAct 4.

Education dep’t launches YES

The Young Educators’ Society (YES) was formally launched as the official student organization of the Education department last June at the GJC audio-visual room.

Education students from first to fourth year attended the launching and election of officers of the organization.

College of Education Dean Dr. Guadalupe Abon, in her opening remarks, encouraged the students to maintain a harmonious relationship despite coming from different year levels.

Elected as this year’s officers for the BSEd were Antonio Delgado, president; Joshua Reyes, vice-president; Irah Vergara, secretary; James Yu, treasurer; and Divine Grace Macapagal, auditor.

Voted as YES officers for BEEd were as follows: Ruth Joy Castro, president; Angeline Bedrijo, vice-president; Ivette Fiel, secretary; Madilyn Rivera, treasurer; and Elwood Perez, auditor.

Mrs. Bernadette Gallardo, head of the Social Sciences department, is the organization’s adviser.

Educ studes go to CDCE seminar: ubd

Education students from General de Jesus College attended the Regional Assembly and seminar held last July 8, 2011 at Bulacan State University in Malolos, Bulacan. The confab, spearheaded by the Council of Deans for the Colleges of Education (CDCE), was themed “UBD: An Alternative Learning Framework for Teacher Education.”

Dr. Marilyn Balagtas, Director, Center for Research and Development in Education, Philippine Normal University, was the resource speaker of the said seminar.

In her talk, Balagtas outlined the tenets of Understanding by Design (UbD) as a framework for improving student achievement, stressing that UbD is not a new curriculum but rather a set of helpful design tools about curricular planning and school reform.

The delegation consisted of 68 Education students, accompanied by Dr. Guadalupe Abon, the Dean of Education.

General de Jesus College sent five officers of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) to a two-day

Leadership Training Seminar held at Sierra Madre Suites, Palayan City last July 23-24.

The said forum, themed “Inspiring to Empower, R3 Leading the Way”, aims to develop the sense of leadership and responsibility among officers, and to strengthen the bond of Accountancy students in Region III.

The first day featured Conflict Management Talk, team building activities and other fun events.

The 3^rd Executive Board Meeting and the awarding of certificates of participation and appreciation was held on the second day.

The delegates were Aljon Sta. Ana, JPIA President; Alyssa de Guzman, VP for Finance; Dukedom Sortiz, VP for Non-academics; Josie Judy Rebolledo, Chairman of the Board; and Juvy Tagubansa, Executive Secretary.

Among the attendees, Sta. Ana and Rebolledo were chosen to be part of the academics committee for the upcoming Mid-Year Convention of Accountancy Students to be held at Fort Ilocandia in Ilocos Norte.

The seminar was organized by the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NFJPIA) Region III Council, an organization of Accountancy students from Central Luzon.

Delgado wins first automated CSC election

AKSYON Party-list standard-bearer Antonio Delgado claimed victory as the new CSC governor in the first computerized election of the officers for the College Student Council (CSC) held last July 7.

Delgado, garnering a total of 481 votes from the students, won over his rival Joshua Reyes of VOICES Party, who received 252 votes.

Also elected as officers of the Student Council are the following: Ivette Fiel (AKSYON), vice governor; Angeline Bedrijo (AKSYON), executive secretary; Josie Judy Rebolledo (AKSYON), treasurer; and Jhanine Angeles (VOICES), auditor.

Mrs. Julieta Galang, Head of the Department of Languages and AKSYON’s adviser during the campaign, is the new adviser of the College Student Council.

AKSYON, which dominated the election, campaigned with a platform based on unity, integrity, honor, progress, attention to needs and dialogue. Its candidates stressed the need for consultation with the studentry and dialogue with the administration regarding school activities and policies.

In line with AKSYON Party-list’s program of proportionate representation of all the departments to the CSC, the current officers appointed the following as the Council’s Board members: Leslie Empaynado and Arnold Amolo, BSBA; Rachelle Agita and Camille Ann Jalova, BSHRM; Christine Eduardo and Timothy Flores, BSIT/ATC; Aljon Sta. Ana and Guia Paez, BSA/BSAct; and Jonathan Mañas and Ruth Joy Castro, for BEEd/BSEd.

The members of the Commission on Elections which oversaw the conduct of the polls are: Mr. Jeffrey Franco, Department Head, Accountancy; Ms. Marycris Manalang, Department Head, IT and ACT; Ms. Lorelei Alarcon; Mrs. Jeanette Alonzo; Mrs. Bernadette Gallardo; and Mrs. Gina Garcia. Former Isabela Governor Grace Padaca was guest speaker at the medical mission and forum on good governance held last June 18 at the GJC gym.

In her speech, Padaca shared how she succeeded in overcoming her physical disability to become one of the most inspiring leaders of the country. She recounted how she went on to help the farmers in her native province of Isabela by raising the prices of rice and corn.

Prior to this, Ms. Marissa Lerias from the Kaya Natin Movement, reminded those present that good governance is for all and not just for the administration officials.

Other speakers at the confab were Manila Times columnist Harvey Keh and businessman Fred Sy, who urged those present to choose effective, ethi

cal and people-empowering leaders for the country.

Meanwhile, the medical mission which accompanied the seminar, dubbed “Karapatan at Kalusugan, Kaya Nating Pangalagaan”, provided free medical and dental check-ups, blood sugar level tests, medicines, flu vaccines and haircut to local residents through the support of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police.

Col. Pasaporte of the Philippine Army gave a presentation of the military’s peaceful strategy to counter insurgencies.

The event was spearheaded by the Kaya Natin Movement, which espouses good governance and ethical leadershipand counts Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Sen. Teofisto Guingona III, former Pampanga governor Ed Panlilio and Padaca among its members.

Acquaintance is defined in the dictionary as familiarity with somebody, with people. Likewise, the College Acquaintance Party held last August 6 provided an opportunity for students from the different courses to gather and get to know each other while having fun.
And in behalf of my co-officers in the College Student Council, I would like to express our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support that the school administration and the students have shown to make the party a successful event. The unprecedented attendance of more than 700 students would not have been possible without the patronage of the different departments within the college. We are very thankful to the administration, the college deans, department heads, staff and to all the students.

You can rest assured that half of the proceeds of the party will be set aside for a project that would benefit the studentry and to subsidize the coming Intramurals so that the students would not have to pay additional fees.
We acknowledge that we had shortcomings during the preparation prior to the party, but we very much willing to learn from our mistakes so as to be able to serve the school better..
We are looking forward to working to working with you in the Council’s next activity.

This year’s College Students’ Acquaintance Party dubbed “i-Danz!”was held at the GJC Gym on August 6.

College Student Council (CSC) Vice Governor Ivette Fiel led the invocation while CSC Governor Antonio Delgado delivered the opening remarks. Afterward, the officers of the different clubs and organizations in the school were recognized on stage, along with the current CSC board members.

The highlights of the event were the “GJC’s Got Talent” and “Talentadong Bebot” contests.

“GJC’s Got Talent” showcased dance groups from the different departments, with Information Technology’s JPCS Dance Krew garnering the first prize. The winning group was composed of BSIT students Leandro Canaya, Eric Constantino, Raenier De Guzman, Christian Talens, Kevin Khryzen Montes, Zhinoos Kimberly Marbella, Kevin Mana, Mark Grandhope Jacela, Julie Anne Villar, Hershy Sebastian, Neil Romero, Aiza Sudio, Sharmaine Ann Molino and Criselda Garces.

On the other hand, in Talentadong Bebot some of the male campus heartthrobs were made to dress up as female contestants in a beauty pageant, replete with talent and Q&A portions.

John Edward Flores (BEEd II) took the title of “Ms. Talentadong Bebot 2011-2012”. Flores was followed by Bebot runner-ups Paulo Palon (BSHRM I), Dukedom Sortiz (BSAct III), Gavino Galvez (BSIT III), and Glenn Neil Tobias (BSBA IV). Elwood Perez (BEEd IV), last year’s reigning Bebot, turned over his title.

Avigael Fernando (BSEd III), Talentadong Bebot organizer, also assisted in the awarding.

The panel of judges for both contests comprised MAPEH teachers Mr. Harry Miranda and Mr. Ed Barroga, and Mrs. Jennifer Erese, the college publication adviser.

The program featured song numbers from the IT and Accountancy departments, and a dance number from BEEd students. Aljon Sta. Ana (BSA III) and Josie Judy Rebolledo (BSAct III) emceed the event, assisted by Charinette Padolina (BSAct III).

Proof, not media mileage

The accused should be given his day in a proper court to defend himself before his accusers—even an unpopular former president. Trial by publicity has no place in a society ruled by law.

During their nine years at the reins of the government, former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her family seemed untouchable. Issues of corruption involving the Arroyos cropped up on a regular basis yet not a single case against them prospered.

True, the media exposed these issues, and the surveys then consistently showed that Mrs. Arroyo did not enjoy the trust of majority of the Filipinos. But during her presidency, she could not be charged, for any of her alleged anomalies, for then she had immunity from legal suits, not to mention control of the military and police.

But all that is now changed. As of last month, a year after stepping down from Malacañang, six cases of plunder have already been filed against Mrs. Arroyo. These cases cover her administration’s alleged misuse of P325 million in PCSO intelligence funds, the apparent illegal transfer to PhilHealth of P550 million worth of OWWA funds and the questionable disbursement of P2.3 billion in fertilizer funds.

The present administration seems to be serious in its promise to go after the past regime’s purported misdeeds, after all. First came the replacement of former Ombudsman Merceditas Guitierrez, an Arroyo appointee, with Conchita Carpio-Morales. A new Ombudsman not beholden to the Arroyos ensures that complaints filed against the former Malacañang tenants would prosper. Still, the filing of plunder cases is one thing, but getting convictions is another.

Government prosecutors therefore should take care that they gather enough evidence to make these charges stand in a court of law lest they want to end up entering into a plea bargaining agreement with the Arroyos, just like what they did with former military comptroller Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia.

Sound evidence to support these charges, and not media mileage, is what those who would be handling the case should be after.

Enrolment ups by 18 percent

A total of 957 college students enrolled this semester at General de Jesus College. This is 18 percent higher than the 811 enrolment figure last semester.

Mrs. Arlene Garcia, the school registrar, attributes this increase to the addition of year levels to the BSHRM, BSIT, BSA and BSAcT courses.

In addition to this, Dr. Josefina Magno, Vice President for Academics, sees GJC’s proximity to the towns in Nueva Ecija’s 4^th Congressional District as a factor that contributed to the upsurge in enrolment.

According to Dr. Magno, this is because the school’s location in San Isidro entails fewer expenses (i.e. lower transportation costs and no need for board and lodging) for students enrolled here as compared to those studying in Cabanatuan.
