Carol, there is a plan that’s tailor-made for people like you who only have a limited time to work out. It’s called 7 Minute Workout.
I walk 40 minutes a day (it takes 20 to walk to school) and also do this workout each day:

11 Jumping Jacks.
11 Push ups.
11 Curl ups.
2 minute weighted lunges. (3kg each)
2 minute weighted squats. (3kg each)
1 minute running on the spot, high knees.
6 minutes x-trainer (Setting: 3)
1 minute lying down with legs straight and lifting, hold, let down (not touching floor).
1 minute plank.
11 Burpees.
1 minute of Plies.
13 reps each (http://www.perfect-body-toning.com/upper-back-exercises.html)

1. Eat more food. 800-1000 calories is a starvation diet.
2. Drink some soy protein shakes (since you’re not getting protein from meat; helps add lean muscle).
3. Stop doing the same exercise every day. Your muscles need time to heal and grow, at least 48 hours in between workouts.
4. On your off days, do some form of cardio: biking, walking, running, etc.

You’re already off on a good foot with the interval training, though.

Brenda answers:

How much muscle you build and how much fat you lose is all dependent on how you exercise. If you’re just interested in slimming down some fat, and not too worried about bulking up your muscles, just focus on doing lots of cardio and high-repetition weight training.

Start with simple things. Getting fit is all about being consistent and dedicated. Make goals that are achievable to you, then stick to them.

I’m not sure how active you are already, but you might want to start with some simple jogging, cycling or swimming. These are simple activities, but they are very good at getting your heart rate up and burning some calories.

If you’re ready for some weight training, start with some basic exercises. If you don’t know what to do, start by joining 7 Minute Workout. You’ll get a “personal trainer” for under $25 a month. You’ll get both workout and nutrition/diet help there.

Focus on your diet as well. Eat lots of fresh food, and stay away from things really high in sugar and fat. Stay completely away from Soda, drink water instead. Water down your fruit juices. Don’t eat too much candy or fried food.

If you follow these steps, you’re well on your way to your goal — to get a fit body.

Would anyone watch a health and wellness channel?

So I just got done with my workout this morning and (just so everyone who reads this knows I am NOT captain fitness) on my drive home I started thinking about TV and all the channels that are on there and then it got to infomercials about getting in shape and I started wondering why there isn’t a channel dedicated to something like that. Obesity is supposedly the scourge of America these days and what is one of the easiest ways to become obese? Sitting at home, watching television, eating a bag of chips and drinking a big gulp. Now that’s not the same situation for everyone and it is probably a little exaggerated but my point is that the goal in life is to be comfortable with the body and I know that some people just get to the point that they don’t even want to leave the house because they have let themselves go. They don’t want to do Pilates on their own and in today’s world with so many choices they wouldn’t know where to start. So, what if there were a channel dedicated to changing that? What if it were dedicated to healthy living and becoming fit. It wouldn’t necessarily be to become Arnold in his prime or anything but just to shed some pounds and get people moving again. There could be shows for beginners just getting up and doing something and then for the more advanced you could have some stuff for them and even expert level. There could be programs focused on men or women. And more importantly, you see Rachel Ray and Dr. OZ with so many healthy living tips and foods. Why not have a few shows dedicated strictly to that? Why not have a couple shows during the meal periods or something along those lines. And there could be some programs about what to do on your own time for ideas like walking or improving your run or even where to start and how build muscle and tone the body and overall to improve your physical health and through doing that, it will help emotional health as well. I know it’s such a cliche but it really is true. People feel a lot better about themselves and their day after a workout. I am already working on this and I will have a much more well thought out plan in time but my first question to the general public is would anyone watch something like that because, yes, this is for the people. This is so we don’t have to look at the news and keep hearing about this epidemic. Do I think it will change the world? No, not even close, but for those people that are really looking for an outlet, then yes. This could change their lives. I know so many people that watch the biggest loser and other shows like that and wish they could do something like that. Why not give the people what they want? But, my question is would people watch this because as much as this is for the people I don’t have the money to do this on charity and so it would have to be a self sustaining profitable station. So, would anyone out there watch this? Does this sound like something that you or your friends, family or coworkers would be interested in? Please, let me know what you think and what I could do to improve this idea and most importantly, would you watch?

Why do people enforce healthy lifestyles for children?

Why must the total dicks sat in the big house be so pissing annoying about healthy lifestyles on kids. It makes me sick how they can put so much pressure on innocent 10 year olds. Kids will manually get rid of there weight as they go through puberty and adolescence without even realizing it. Because, after all, being a kid is the only time in your life where you don’t have to worry about anything. I don’t believe how people make such a big deal out of it.

Brenda answers:

1. That’s an interesting hypothesis. I’d like to believe it. So it would be good if it were valid . What evidence do you have that children’s early eating habit definitely do not lead to later health problems.

2.There is so much evidence that :
there are multiple commercial and social pressures on children to eat foods which put them at risk
Families do not simply have to encourage eating styles but have to counter these wider pressures
These pressures increase into adolescence
For some children there is not a relationship between their early eating habits and greater risks of later disease, early morbidity and mortality. However, for others there is.

3. The reason that ‘kids don’t have to worry about anything’ is because their parents pick up that responsibility. When parents don’t do that kids are at risk of inheriting greater problems’

Brenda answers:

Organ transplantation is amazing since it provide an opportunity to lengthen one’s life. However, there are lots of risk on having one. Organ transplants aren’t only for people who lives healthy lifestyles. There are selection criteria for one to be qualified to be in an organ transplant. This specifically talks about the possible response of the body, the compatibility of the body to a new, foreign organ. All body systems are evaluated and the cardiac system is really given emphasis.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Brenda answers:

Okay here’s what i’ve found from my personal studies. I know you’ve probably got your workout plans down but I’ve listed a few things incase you ever feel like trying something new.

To loose weight you need to change two main things about your life:
How much/How often you exercise
Your diet

It’s healthy to work out at least 20 minutes everyday, and that means getting your heart pumping without slowing down for 20 minutes. This means you want to focus on cardio workouts such as running, jumping jacks, swimming, (etc.).
I’ve found that swimming works the best because you’re using the most amount of muscles at the same time and because the water’s cold, you’re burning fat just to stay warm!
For different types of exercises you can go to http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/ sign up for free and you’ll find a bunch of tips how to stay fit, including video demonstrations of specific workouts.

Secondly, your diet. Eating healthy alone will help you shed those pounds because your body will be forced to burn fat instead of store it.
Start by eating balanced meals that include protein, carbs, fiber, and as little fat as possible. Try not to over-do it on the carbs because carbs are energy and they get stored as fat pretty easy if you dont work it off. If you finish a balanced meal but you’re STILL HUNGRY relax, this is natural we’re just used to eating way too much. Go for some salad, fruit, or vegetables, because these things fill you up without weighing you down.
When you feel you need a snack, eat fruit. Apples are good, peaches are very sweet if you have a candy craving and the BEST is to make a smoothie. I usually put in some cherries, banana, strawberries, blueberries, and grapes along with non-fat yogurt and ice (towards the end so it doesn’t just end up as water).
This may seem hard at first but if you can do it for a week, it gets easier from there–trust me!
For more information on eating a balanced diet, you can visit http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/index.h…

Good luck!!

Men will see results faster than women. It depends on your current habits, weight, health, etc. Usually by the end of week two you can start to notice small changes. You’ll definately feel better by then. Best wishes!

Brenda answers:

You may like to eat junk food now, but before you know it, your metabolism will slow down and you may find yourself gaining weight easier than you had in the past. With that said, make sure you exercise- the diet isn’t everything Now for a healthy diet–

At your age, you should be consuming approximately 2000 calories/day (and more- around 500) if you exercise moderately.

Eat plenty of fresh or frozen vegetables (canned ones tend to have fewer nutrients), whole grains and fruit. Beans, lentils and rice are also very healthy foods. For the vegetables, make sure you have a good variety, since different veggies have different vitamin/mineral concentrations (so go for both green/leafy vegetables, as well as “yellow”/squashlike veggies). Dairy products (milk, non-processed cheeses, yogurt, cottage cheese) are also very important source of calcium.

In terms of meat, fish and chicken breast are some of the healthiest things you can eat. Eggs are also loaded with protein. The yolks do have a ton of cholesterol, but you should not be worried much about that now (but do be mindful when you are older). If you have a family history of high cholesterol, consuming a little less of it now may pay off in the future. Beef is also an excellent source of protein and iron, but also has a lot of cholesterol and saturated fat, so choose leaner cuts if you can. Pork (especially ham and bacon) are especially bad for you, so try to avoid them if possible.

Super-sugary foods such as candy, soda (especially bad!) and even juices can also wear on your teeth and mess with your metabolism/blood sugar levels, so try to limit your sugar intake. The ubiquitous High Fructose Corn Syrup is also bad for you (it messes with the “fullness” receptors in your stomach, and makes it longer for you to feel full). Corn syrup is actually regulated in Europe for this reason (you will notice that European-imported foods will never have corn syrup).
Limit fried foods, or anything that seems overly “processed” (as in you cannot tell what the real ingredients are! This includes a lot of junk foods). Also, watch your sodium intake. If you have too much salt in your diet, it can put you at a higher risk of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular disorders as you get older.

Drink a lot of water, take a daily vitamin and make sure you get enough physical activity.

Hope this helps!

Tips for going vegetarian?

Alright so i’ve decided on going vegetarian, for many reasons. The environmental impact is huge, i don’t enjoy meat that much anyways, meat is pretty unhealthy, the treatment of animals is offensive, and health wise it isn’t worth it to me. I’m a pretty healthy teenager, i count calories, i don’t eat candy or chocolate(for the last 4 months it was a huge achievement for me:) and this past week i haven’t eaten meat at all. So i need tips for going vegetarian. My oldest brother is vegetarian but he is across the country attending college, but the rest of my family does eat meat. I live in montana so vegetarians are very few and actually looked down upon. So what are some good tips on going vegetarian? How can i eat balanced meals, with protein? Thank you!

Brenda answers:

Hi! First of all, congratulations on becoming vegetarian!!! You’re playing a big role in helping to save the animals and stand up for their rights.
Ok, foodwise, my favorites are Boca burgers, salads (w/eggs, tomatoes, cheese, sweet bell peppers, etc.)and bean and cheese burritos. Those are just a couple ideas of vegetarian dishes.
Be sure to eat alot of beans, nuts, legumes, tofu, and fruits, and protein shakes are good, too.
If you start to get discouraged, remember what you’re doing for the animals and feel good about yourself for helping them. And if someone tries to get you discouraged, don’t listen. You’re doing a great thing for yourself, animals, and the environment. Keep it up!

tips to help me stay with my diet?

okay so im a teenager so i still live at home with my parents. i need to lose some weight for sports, so i tried to go on a healthy diet, mainly trying to cut out fatty foods. but its so hard bc my mom always wants to fix unhealthy foods for supper. plus, she always buys nothing but junkfood at the store, so when i get hungry, that’s the only thing in the house to eat. ive tried to tell her before, but she’ll only pick up a couple cans of fruit, and maybe some celery or something. it does no good. plus, they always take me out to eat with them to chineese, pizza hut, or something like that. i was feeling good about my diet today bc i had done good, but when i walked in from school today, she had a huge plate of brownies sitting right there and when i seen them my eyes about buldged out of my head bc i was kinda hungry anyways and it had been awhile since i had junkfood, so i went to town on them.

my parents are never going to change their eating habits just bc im trying to , so how in the world do i saty on a diet when im surrounded by people that eat nothing but junk??

Dont get caught up in the running part if you want to get muscular. Running keeps you in shape and its ok every now and then but if you want to gain muscle you can see and not just be bruce lee ripped, lay off the running and hit those dumbbells.

Forget people who tell you to take protein shakes. Thats a bunch of crap. Every guy takes them because its the thing to do but they do nothing. Your body can only absorb so much protein a day and if you pump your body full of it, its just going to give you a fat stomach.

Are you a thin guy? If you are eat CHICKEN and other meats high in NATURAL protein. Find wesites that show you exercises which use dumbells.

You dont need a gym to get in shape. Sitting on the edge of a chair and keepinf your legs out straight, and moving them up and down is an AWESOME workout for abs and theres no weights involved.

Plain and simple: Don’t bother changing your diet drastically to eating things you are not used to.

Take it slower! Just eat a little less and a little more healthy, cut down on sugary foods, eat plenty of lean protein (chicken, fish, cottage cheese, spinach) and plenty of vegetables.

It totally depends on your height, weight and activity levels to determine HOW MUCH you should be eating…

Use this BMR calculator to see how many calories you need per day:

http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

BMR means basal metabolic rate.

If you eat the amount of calories for you BMR then whatever exercise you do will ensure you lose weight.

To Danson:

The calcualtor IS correct. It is for how many calories a person requires each day. I know it is based on weight but I am assuming that the asker isn’t a body builder since he says he has “pudge” therefore my advice is good

How to get a fit body like a cheerleader?

I’ve noticed that cheerleaders have really fit and slim bodies.
I want to achieve this without any super crazy diets, and without having to buy a lot of stuff, and as little time as possible
The reason I want to do this is so I’ll look good in a bathing suit next summer, and hopefully lose a little weight.
Please help me out.
I would appreciate any answers

Brenda answers:

Honey, if it were that easy, don’t you think we’d all have those bodies? I mean, honestly, then it wouldn’t be so rewarding and speculating and amazing to people who see them. But I will give you tips. Keep in mind that these are lifestyle goals that will help with gradual weight loss, if you’re in it for the long shot. Yes, they are cliche, but stay with me on this one. It’s all true and effective. I’m writing more…(than what you normally hear). I’m applying all the knowledge I’ve gathered throughout the years, more or less.

Commonly asked question: should I exercise even when I’m not on a diet?
Answer: of course you should. Have you seen the movie Legally Blonde? As Reese Witherspoon quotes: “Exercise gives you endorphands (or however you spell it). Endorphands make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” Haha, that last sentence was not necessary and certainly irrelevant, but point being, it’s true. It’s good for the overall health and it makes you feel better. It also is very good for burning calories and fat.

As for eating habit rituals and purposes:
Drink only water and lots of it. No fruit juices or smoothies (unless it’s natural, homemade and with only splenda, if anything). No sodas. No alcohol. No brownies, cookies, cake, muffins, cupcakes, ice cream, pies, sweets, etc. No adding extra sugar, butter, dressings, or salt to foods. No processed foods. No chocolate, no caramels, etc. No white flour in general. Only brown, whole-grain/whole-wheat bread, rice, cereal or pasta, but no bread, rice, or pasta after 3PM — EVER; hence, no caeser salad after 3PM either, due to bread AND fattening dressing. Only put olive oil and lemon on salads. All fruits and vegetables, except bananas. No canned, dried or frozen fruit, as most are processed. Only egg whites. No fast/fried foods. Frozen yogurt allowed ONLY if fat-free, low in sugar, and w/ no artificial flavors or coloring. No potato chips and only certain nuts and seeds allowed. No red meats; avoid it at all costs. Meat (which includes chicken, fish, poultry and meat) should be no bigger than a deck of cards per serving. Cheese only allowed if it is fat-free. Cereals must be low in sugar, cholesterol and fats, preferably none at all. And have at the very least one gram of protein per serving. Milk must be at least 2% skim milk. No seconds in servings. Eat no more after 5-6PM, unless it is dairy products that are fat-free such as 100-calorie yogurts.

You can do exercises like crunches, pushups, situps, stretching, jump rope, among others, to help tone body. Join a gym and go every other day. I go about 3 times a week, then one day a week I do Zumba, which is a fast-burning dancing class that is Latin and fun-based music, and then on Fridays, I’m doing stuff too. Here is a list of good things:

Walk the treadmill for 30 minutes. Start at 2.5-3 MPH and then move your way up till eventually you’re jogging and running at 4-5 and maybe even 6 MPH. Do 25 jumping jacks, pushups, situps and crunches daily. When you’re in class, do abdominal exercises so that you can exercise even while in class. Push your stomach in and out daily until you tire out. Try to do at least 50 each day. Also do some stretching at the gym and use the eleptical for about another 30 minutes, 15 if you tire out easily. Try to get as much fiber and proteins as possible in your diet. Try not to get much Saturated Fats in there too. If you want to take up some classes after school or on weekend mornings, you can do:
•Zumba
•Spinning (REALLY good when it comes to burning fat, as well as Zumba)
•Yoga
•Pilates
•Belly-Dancing (How do you think Shakira keeps her slim yet curvy figure?)

I look up to Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s figures, no joke. But obviously, they have like America’s best bodies.

For the gym, you should get a personal trainer, maybe once or twice a week, depending on your budget capacity, and he or she will know exactly how many crunches, etc, you need to do.

Basically reduce caloric intake and the reason I’m sharing so much with you is because I know how I love to get long, informative responses like this.

And asking yourself, “Will this chocolate really make much of a difference?” is a wrong attitude to start with. Because it most definitely will. If anything, eating a piece of DARK chocolate in the morning, in a MODERATED portion, won’t be too bad. But try not to eat ANYTHING after 6PM. At all. Dark chocolate can actually be good for the heart if not eaten on a regular basis and too large. Because nothing is good when eaten too much.

Drink at least 8 cups of water daily.

Good carbs are actually healthy; bad carbs, found in most sweets, is not.

Hi. My name is Brenda and I’m a diabetic.

Now, before you start flooding me with angry comments and emails, let me say that I am not mocking the fundamentals of 12-step programs. On the contrary, many diabetics — myself included — approach our diabetes in much the same way that any addict approaches their addiction.

Some of us are in denial.

Yeah, they say I have diabetes so I have to watch what I eat and maybe I should exercise. But I feel okay, so what’s the problem.”

Some of us use a crutch.

Okay, I have diabetes. But as long as I take my meds I don’t really have to worry about that whole ‘diet-and-exercise’ thing.”

Well, now it’s time to face facts.

“Feeling okay” is not an excuse for ignoring diabetes. Because if you ignore it for too long, you definitely won’t be feeling okay.

Complications from diabetes can affect pretty much every part of your body. There can be:

Eye Complications (I have only slight peripheral vision left in my right eye.)

Foot Complications

Skin Complications

Heart Disease

High Blood Pressure

Mental Health Issues

Hearing Loss

Oral Health Problems

Gastroparesis

Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Neuropathy (Nerve Damage)

Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome (HHNS)

Kidney Disease (Nephropathy)

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)

Stroke

Stress

(You can learn more about these diabetes-related complications at http://www.diabetes.org/living-with-diabetes/complications/.)

“Taking meds” is not an excuse for ignoring diabetes. These meds — over time — can create their own set of complications. I had to switch from long-term use of metforman (an oral medication) to insulin injections because I was developing kidney problems.

While this blog will not focus exclusively on diabetes, that disease was my motivation to change the way I’ve been living.

On this blog I’m going to chronicle my ongoing journey to getting fit and living healthy. I invite you to take the journey with me.

Get fit and live healthy,
