Huntington Beach has gone to the dogs!

Huntington Beach has gone to the dogs! Well, you probably already know that HB is a very dog friendly place. So what better way to celebrate our furry four legged friends than to support some events we have coming up!

First, this Saturday the 9th, from noon to 3pm come on down to 5th & PCH for a (free) Santa Paws event. Bring your kids and your pets for photos with Santa & Mrs. Claus. food samplings, dog adoptions, vendor booths. They are partnering with Waggin' Trails Rescue Foundation for this event. When that is over, mosey on down to Pacific City for a Barks of Love event at Ways & Means from 3pm-5pm (same day) on their dog friendly outdoor patio. There will be dog-friendly activities, many four-legged friends in attendance and fun offerings from other Pacific City vendors, including Pop Bar (serving PUP-SICLES) and Top Dog Barkery . Tickets for the event are $20 (sold at the door), which will include drinks and appetizers from Ways & Means and a donation to Barks of Love.

The following week, you have another opportunity to support Waggin’ Trails and kick off the holiday season at their annual Holiday Wine Tasting at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, December 14, 6pm-9pm. $40 per person (or $50 at the door) includes a wide selection of fine wine, craft beer, hors d' oeuvres, desserts and chocolate. Opportunity drawings, music and lots of fun. Dogs are welcome and holiday dog attire is encouraged. Purchase tickets at WagginTrails.org (valet parking at $3).

Let’s continue the dog theme…..our very own Dog Beach (DogBeach.org) needs help. They rely solely upon private donations and volunteers. Hi Huntington Beach. I’ve been very lax putting out notices haven’t I? For this first blast of the year, I’m concentrating on some great opportunities to give back and help out by participating in local fundraisers… emphasizing the fun part.

First, you can do something real easy to help out with our local American Cancer Society Relay for Life (which is to be held August 12-13 this year). Next Tuesday the 21^st eat or take out at the El Pollo Loco on 19171 Brookhurst Street anytime during their business hours and they will donate 25% of all sales to the Relay!!! Wear purple or mention (or do both) that you are there for the Relay. They are going to have a team in our Relay for the first time, and it would be great to show them some support. If you can’t make it to El Pollo Loco that day, how about having a drink at Sharkeez on Friday the 24^th? From 6:30 – 8:30 you can buy one drink and get the 2^nd for .25cents. They are also donating back to the Relay. This one needs an rsvp which you can do so at kassidymhansen@gmail.com.

Next up, end of March, Sunday the 26, 4pm-7pm is the Huntington Beach Host Lions Club annual All You Can Eat Crabfest. This event sells out every year and is held at Old World Festival Hall. Presale tickets can be purchase at https://tinyurl.com/jzogv83. Prices go up first of March and the deadline for ticket sales is March 12, so don’t delay.

Another biggie is the Taste of Huntington Beach. April 30, noon to 4pm. This is held, as every year, at the Sports Complex (by Central Library). Holidays are fast approaching! Sorry this is a longer blast, but there is so much going on!!   (and hopefully this time I didn't make any mistakes on dates/times!! I know I usually do. lol )

Want to do some early holiday shopping? This Saturday there is a holiday boutique at SeaCliff Country Club. 11am-3pm. It is hosted by Finding Something More – an organization helping to inspire women to look beyond their circumstances. They put on events designed toward personal growth and development as well as events geared toward helping charitable organizations. The boutique this Saturday is also a luncheon and there will be special vendor exhibits (get those stocking stuffers) as well as raffles and opportunity drawings. Get your tickets early and it is only $30 ($40 at the door). This is always a very nice event and for a very worthy cause. www.findingsomethingmore.com.

More holiday shopping will be following weekend at Old World Restaurant, Nov 27 from 10am-4pm. There will be up to 50 arts and crafts vendors, live music, and German food throughout the beer garden and festival hall. You are sure to find some great stocking stuffers and gifts at this one.

More for worthy causes: mark your calendar for the 14th of Dec for the Waggin' Trails Holiday Party at the Waterfront Hilton, 6-9pm. For only $35 presale ($45 at the door), you will be treated to a wide selection of fine wine, craft beer, hors d'oeuvres, desserts/chocolate & live music, raffles, silent auction. And the best part of all you can bring (if you have one) your 4 legged "fur-child" – we hope dressed in their holiday best.   Valet parking will be available for $3. Need more to do with your dog? You have two chances to visit Top Dog Barkery and have your pooch photos with the Surfin' Santa Paws!! Nov 27, 1pm-4pm and Dec 4, 12pm-3pm. So what does your pup want for Christmas? Let them tell Santa Paws! Top Dog is located in Pacific City on the lower level on 1st St under Equinox. While at Pacific City make sure to check out the super cute Santa set up in the middle of the lower level, complete with Santa's airstream trailer! It is set up now, but Santa will make his official arrival this weekend, and there are lots of dates you can pop in to get your photo with Santa. Looking for some tree lighting? This weekend there will be two.   The first one is Saturday night (the 19th) at Bella Terra for the Annual Tree Lighting. 6-7pm. Enjoy hot chocolate, falling snow, music & song and special surprises. The first 200 guest receive a complimentary santa hat and jingle bells!! Santa will be arriving and available for photos beginning at 7pm. Then on Sunday there is the Miracle on Main Street from 2-7pm downtown HB. Main street will be closed to cars and filled with entertainment, holiday craft vendors and free refreshments. Santa arrives at 6pm for the tree lighting at that time.   And finally, the following Sunday (the 4th) is the Light a Light of Love Pier Lighting Ceremony. 3pm-7pm. This one begins with a parade down Main St from Orange to the Pier. There will also be entertainment at Pier Plaza and a Taste of Main on Main St, ending with the snowflake lighting.

Yep, plenty to do!! In the meantime, I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I'll make sure to get more posts out with additional holiday fun stuff to do.

So you all know I have a love for Pacific City – have you been there lately to check out what is new? Lot 579 is now open! If you didn’t know, it is named after Lifeguard Towers 5, 7, and 9 and covers everything from gourmet sandwiches to ocean-to-table seafood, fish tacos to Australian meat pies, cold pops & homemade ice cream to champagne. Here is a list of places now open: Bear Flag Fish Company, Burnt Crumbs, Hans Homemade Ice Cream, Popbar, Portola Coffee Lab, Pie-Not, Petals and Pop. And soon to open will be The American Dream (superior burgers & 60 craft brews), Frosted Cupcakery (out of Belmont Shore), Il Barone Italian Street Food (pizzas, pastas, & more), Mahogany Smoked Meats (beef, turkey, elk and bison jerky). Also, now open is the Bungalow – pretty cool looking place with an eclectic design, quite the hangout. A suspected $126 million telemarketing scheme uncovered by Huntington Beach investigators led authorities on Tuesday morning to arrest 21 people accused of defrauding small businesses and charities by selling them overpriced toner for printers and photocopiers.

Relay for Life in Huntington Beach this weekend

It is that time of year again – American Cancer Society Relay for Life. It happens to be this Saturday, 10am to 10pm in Central Park. Just about everyone I know has been touched by cancer in some capacity, so consider coming out to join us. On that facebook page, you will see the schedule for the day regarding all that is going on. Lunch and dinner being cooked by our very own Huntington Beach Host Lions Club (accepting donations which go to the Relay), lots of live music, and fun themed laps. Please try to come out and show some support. Tell others!

A week from this Saturday (May 7 from 1-6pm) is the Therapeutic Riding Center annual fundraiser and BBQ at the Red Horse Barn at the Equestrian Riding Center (18381 Goldenwest St). Silent auction, parade of the riding center's athletes, hat contest and free face painting are planned. $5 children, $10 adults. For more info:www.trchb.org.

And when you are done there, on the same day you can head over to the Seacliff Country Club for the Project Self Sufficiency annual Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Please fundraiser from 6-10 pm. Have you been to Saint Marc over at Pacific City yet? I can tell you, I personally had to make a few visits to their booth because it was so good. So, speaking of bacon, they now have opened their To-Go-Bacon-Bar. First up from Pacific City:
Members of the Huntington Beach community, including students, residents and beach goers, will join top female pro surfer Lakey Peterson at Pacific City - a new ocean view shopping and dining destination in Huntington Beach - for a fun-filled day celebrating Surf City USA with a Beach Clean-Up!

Beginning at 9am, participants will meet at Pacific City (in the ocean view plaza between Lemonade and Simmzy’s) to enjoy one of the best wake-up calls – complimentary Portola Coffee and a warm-up stretch with one of Equinox’s talented trainers. At 10am, the group will hit the beach with Peterson, a passionate environmentalist who currently is ranked the number-four female surfer in the world, to collect trash. Scavenger Hunt in Huntington Beach (plus more)

January is half over, are you participating in the Scavenger Hunt downtown?   It goes til the end of the month, so there is still time. 25 HB Downtown businesses are participating in this month-long scavenger hunt with over $2500 in prizes.

"Players" can pick up a game form at any of the twenty-five businesses and start playing right away. The Scavenger Hunt adventure takes players over several blocks in the downtown destination, where they learn answers to a variety of business clues, such as: What do the 3 dots represent in the Bruxie logo, or who invented the first permanent wave, and what is the temperature of liquid nitrogen used to make fresh ice cream? When a player visits the store, he or she is given a sticker from that business. A completed form makes them eligible to win the Grand Prize of $250.00 cash. A player who completes at least 10 of the clues can win a $10 gift card; entries with 15 stickers can win a $25 gift card and 24 stickers entries are entered to win a $50.00 gift card. Over $2500 in prizes will awarded to game players. Entries are returned to Mangiamo Gelato Cafe by 7pm on Sunday, January 31st. Over 100 prizes will be awarded. Have you been to OPM yet? Warner & Magnolia (next to the Jiffy Lube)…. Well if you haven’t, or even if you have and want an excuse to go back, come join a bunch of us at a business mixer Thursday the 21st, 5-7pm.   Very casual. Halloween in Huntington Beach

Are you ready for Halloween? If you haven’t made your decision yet, here are a couple of things you can check out.

Have you heard of the Rotary Clubs Huntington Haunt Experience at the Newland House? This runs Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat night and is no ordinary haunted house, but an interactive experience where you literally become a part of the story, which can be best described as part haunted house, part theatre, and part interactive ‘moving’ play where the audience becomes involved in the twisted tale! And where else in Hauntington Beach would this chilling wedding take place than at the historic Newland House and Barn, spread among two ‘scare’ acres of haunted thrills and chills. Prior to the experience and awaiting your turn you can try to relax your bones at the Haunted Carnival with artisans displaying their wares, a Victorian physic, henna painting and a Costume Contest all while enjoying live entertainment, food, wine and craft beers. On Friday and Saturday night from dusk til 10pm, there is the haunted maze at 9631 Sailfish Dr. Put on by the Horsky family – it is not for the faint of heart, in fact, they recommend adults only. Prepared to be scared as this house is transformed into a scary maze. Freights await around every corner from homemade yet professional looking animatronics to things of a more freakish nature, like Horsky's handmade skin quilt.

On Halloween, bring the entire family down for the annual Halloween Fest. It runs from 3:30 to 7:30 on Main Street & The Strand. There will be an assortment of events for locals to engage in and join the lively entertainment including a kids costume contest at 4:30 and a canine costume contest at 6:00pm. There will also be free entertainment and rides, music, photo booth, petting zoo and more as well as special guest appearances, no tickets needed!

If you don’t want to head to downtown, you can take the kids to Bella Terra for trick or treating from 6 to 8pm. Or if you are farther north, Sunset Beach is having their annual Halloween Party (on the 31^st from 5 to 10pm) at the Sunset Beach Community Association, 16861 12^th St. It is created for children and adults, the event will feature superhero-themed decorations, games, and activities. The event takes place from dusk to 10 pm. With a haunted house, animatronics, and actors in full costume, this event is FREE and open to the public!

And finally, the following weekend the long awaited opening of Pacific City is here! You will get your first peek at the property on Saturday, November 7 from 11am-7pm and Sunday, November 8 from 11am-5pm. This will be the first weekend Pacific City is open to the public, so don’t miss your chance to be among the first to see the property and experience Pacific City’s first tenants’ opening preview! First guests to arrive will receive free tote bags with special merchant offers and giveaway samples. Hope everyone is enjoying your spring so far. Are you ready for Mother’s Day? How about starting it off a day early and treat your mom to an all you can eat pancake & sausage breakfast for only $5. On Saturday from 7am to 11am, the HB Host Lions Club will be cooking their annual Pancake Breakfast in Lake Park (12^th & Lake St, downtown). There will be a Pancake Eating Contest, Pancake Relays, Pancake Art Demo & Contest and Photos with Miss Huntington Beach & Court. Also displays by City Parks & Rec, HB Police and Fire Departments and much more! Pop on over and enjoy this popular event!

For a bit of education, next Wed, May 13 from 11:30am to 1:30pm our Chamber of Commerce will be offering another free business workshop hosted by Microsoft: “The Right Technology for Small Business”. This seminar will review the technology that will help you reduce your technology costs by 40%. They will review real life scenarios that plague most small business owners. Office 365 and its mobility features will be reviewed and demonstrated. They will also talk about what type of Internet and Voice connections are available and what VoIP actually is. Please join at the Chamber office and learn how to run an efficient business. (they even provide lunch). I’ve been to several of them so far and have learned something useful each time. Coming up the following weekend, May 15-17 is the annual Duck-a-Thon at the pier. This event always attracts a lot of people as everyone gets a kick out of watching hundreds of rubber duckies get dumped off the pier and “fight” their way to shore. Not only do the Lions Club serve up pancakes, but on May 27 you can join them while the Waterfront Hilton serves them up (and guests) wine at their Wine Tasting fundraiser to support local community charities. Hors d’oeuvres will be available along with a fine selection of small bites that can be purchased at nominal prices. The public is invited to an afternoon reception at the HB Public Library (7111 Talbert Ave) on Tuesday, January 27 from 2:30 PM to 5 PM – featuring 19 authors and illustrators of children's books. These authors and illustrators will have spent the day at local schools, sharing your love of reading, writing and the creative writing experience with our students.

You can meet and greet these authors and illustrators at the Library, and they can sign and personalize books for all the special children in your life. Books are the perfect gift for children – no need to worry about size or color, no assembly required and batteries not needed! AND these personalized books will be treasured by students long after other toys break or are given away.
Barnes & Noble will be at the library reception to sell the authors' books.

That afternoon, the Friends of the Children's Library and the Sand Scribes Children's Writing Group will host awards ceremonies for 42 local students who are winners of our Writing and Illustrating Contest "Spin Us a Story" and their winning entries will be on display in the library lobby through the month of February. Here we are well in to the first of 2015. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and is ready for a prosperous year. I know I started the year off with a bang and business is booming.

I'm not one for the term New Years resolutions, as a friend of mine claims, you are setting yourself up for failure when you make standard resolutions just because it is the first of the year. Have you seen the first two surfboards that are part of the Surfboards on Parade? As a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Huntington Beach, a surfboard art exhibit is popping up all over town. Huntington Beach Rotary is raising money to eradicate skin cancer and so far the two surfboards that have been unveiled are pretty cool. The first was at Dukes, so pop in and take a peek. This past Tuesday, we were at the Waterfront Hilton for the unveiling of the board by shaper Robert August & artist John Van Hamersveld. Okay, that is more than enough events for the moment. The Relay for Life being the only non-drinking one! But if you’ve ever lost anyone to cancer, you will definitely want to come out to this event.

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit a new (well newish) business here in town. Carrozza Surfboards run and owned by Bob Davis & Chris Carrozza. What a cool business. They are creating custom surfboards and definitely doing it right. They have a great philosophy towards customer service – Take care of the client. When they give a due date for a board, they stick to it. They give back to the community by sponsoring young upcoming surf kids providing guidance and following a right track in life. They help those that might not otherwise ever get a chance to experience the joy of surfing. They are very active with the Surfrider Foundation and involved in the community in other ways as well. Also the FirePit down on Warner & PCH is no longer there, replaced by another Mediterranean restaurant, the Golden Olive. Just some fyi. :-)
