In its 2nd year and after a 6 month hiatus, Rooftop (Silent) Cinema is back and exclusive to the roof terrace of Sydney’s most awarded pub.

But before you think black & white film with no dialogue, the (Silent) only refers to the use of wireless headphones for immersive comfort and neighbourly love; but the feel of the outdoor cinema under the stars is what truly separates this date night wonder apart from the mimics!

For $10 a ticket, you receive a free glass of wine or beer on arrival and a set of headphones.

Illawarra Brewing Company & The Local Taphouse present the sophomore release in their collaboration series, and it is set to outshine the award-winning CHUCK NORRIS American Red Ale.

The HAWAIIAN COOKIE Golden Ale is a beer of summertime passion. The Pacific Rim hops deliver a tropical aroma that rings out like the song of a Polynesian siren, leading into a biscuity malt backbone reminiscent of your grandma’s Anzac bikkies, and finishes with a fresh mouth-feel that will no doubt blur the boundaries of platonic love like Blue Lagoon.

For this month we are hosting a special Ale Stars with the elusive Moon Dog Brewery from the rustic Abbotsford factory in back streets of inner-city Melbourne.

Moon Dog has been consistently unleashing a new breed of beer onto the Australian beer-loving public; blended styles, barrel aging, wild fermentation, while using some weird and wonderful ingredients. The beers are style-agnostic and irreverent with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek, and an attitude that says “Who cares? It’s only beer.”

GAME OF CIDERS - SUMMER IS HERE

On Sunday 29th September we held our first ever Cider Makeover on the roof terrace and it was an incredible day marked with hay bales, 27 degree sunshine and 10 ciders from 5 of the best cider producers in the country.

7:30am in the morning and "Winston" the free-range Black Berkshire suckling pig from Byron Bay gave himself up and we begun a spit roast that Darlinghurst would never forget.

As our game-Chef Adam Lannister Hutton watched over him, he was braised lusciously with a saucy blend of ciders and the pork was then served on a fresh sour-dough baguette and served with an apple, red cabbage and celeriac rémoulade , topped off with a house-made 'best of odds' BBQ sauce made by Scotty Stark Stirling. To appease our vegetarian friends, we made BBQ Hoisin vegetarian skewers & jerk-spiced Haloumi skewers.

To round off the afternoon we were serving a Tyrion Lannister mini-cheese board provided by Formaggi Ocello

Music of the day was provided by The Little Bastards, fresh off a national tour with The Beards and they were a cracka. Dressed part op-shop hipster/part "dad at xmas" and they sure do know how to get a shindig going at full stomp!

Batlow, Willie-Smiths, Napoleon, Sunshack & the Hills Cider Co. provided the beverages on the day and The Local would love to thank all of the staff that worked super hard to make it such a great introduction to Sundays on the roof terrace.

7 Cent Brewery brews up something special for St. Kilda Ale Stars this October

A new Victorian craft brewery on the scene, 7 Cent Brewery is producing some cracker beers and we've got them in the house on Tues., Oct 22nd from 7pm.

We'll sample beers from their core range - Hard Deck IPA, Whapping Wharf ESB and their B4 Dark Belgian Strong Ale. The boys are also brewing up a special treat for us...a one-off beer especially for the Ale Stars!

Darlinghurst Gets Goated

After a few months of smaller, more intimate Ale Stars sessions up in the middle level, we returned to the main bar due to the huge pull of Mountain Goat, the granddaddies of Aussie Craft Beer. We were joined by Dave and Luke from Mountain Goat, and they regaled us with stories of the breweries history, the colourful characters inside the brewery and the excellent beers that are loved by so many Aussie drinkers. We were also lucky to have our Ale Star Tsar Doc back in the house after a 3 month leave of absence.

To start the beers off, we all had a taste of Mike’s 3rd Nut, a delicious Nut Brown ale, brewed with nuts roasted on Mountain Goat’s own special Pizza oven. Enjoyed by all, this one had a really rich nuttiness, with a slightly dry finish that kept us all wanting more. Dave talked us through the beer, telling us all about Mike, one of the brewers at Mountain Goat, and the beer that he made.

During this round of beer, we also played the ‘Adrian Pua Memorial Round’ of trivia, paying homage to one ofour favourite members (he wrote the round for us, while off galavanting around South America).

After that, we had the Cross Breed Hopfweizenbock collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery from, you guessed it, Brooklyn NY. These guys are big players in the US beer scene, and have been exporting their consistently tasty beers to Australia for a few years now. It came as no surprise that when they ventured down here for this years Melbourne Good Beer Week that Mountain Goat were able to grab them and make a beer with them. The beer itself is a Galaxy hopped strong wheat beer (hence the name Hopfweizenbock), resulting in a delicious combination of flavours from the hops, wheat and yeast.

For our third round of beer, we had another beer named for a Mountain Goat brewer, the Naz #2 Mocha Porter. A nice balanced porter, with a heap of added chocolate and coffee, it was a great match with the nights dinner, a rich beef tagine (we thought it would be disrespectful to eat goat). This one was developed by Naz (short for Nazareth), one of the brewers down in Richmond, and is an evolution of the chocolate porter he brewed last year.

Finally, we landed on one of Mountain Goat’s seasonal stalwarts, the excellent Surefoot Stout. Brewed as a sweeter style of stout, this one balances a rich dark body with some nice sweet chocolate and coffee flavours. The Surefoot has always been a favourite here at the Local, and it went down an absolute treat for everyone at Ale Stars.

We’d like to thank everyone who came along, including the guys from the Goat, all of our lovely members and those of you who just came along for this awesome session with Mountain Goat. We hope to see you at our next Ale Stars, featuring another Victorian favourite, Bright Brewery.

Beginning the 15th August at 6pm, we'll have a fantastic international and local selection of dark, rich, mind altering beers taking over 6 - 10 taps to make Winter pass quicker than you can say "Eclipse".

Lucy will be exploring and showcasing coffee in all its dark, rich glory, whilst we compare the distinctive roasted characters found in our favourite darker brews.

Schlenkerla's Schmokey Schession ImpreScheses Darlo Ale Schtars

A huge thanks to all of our awesome Darlinghurst Ale Stars who came to last month's smokey session. It was a great night, full of smokey booze, food, trivia and some special guests joining us from Germany.

The first beer, kicking off the night, was the Schlenkerla Helles Lager, from the excellent Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg, Bavaria. Despite being the only beer of the night that wasn't a smoked beer, it had a nice subtle smokey flavour from the rest of the brewers equipment.

We were lucky enough to have a chat to Adam Brown, a former member of the Taphouse crew who now works for Weyerbacher Malt's experimental brewery in Bamberg. He gave us a great insight into brewing in Bamberg, and the whole tradition behind Rauchbier.

We then had both the Schlenkerla Marzen and Weizen, both of which have a lot of that classic smokey flavour that Schlenkerla is renowned for. A lot of people tasted bacon and BBQ smoke. While we drank these ones, we were joined by Matthias Trum Live from the Schlenkerla Brewery. He talked us through the history of the brewery, what goes in to making the beers and how they serve the beers at their historic brewpub.

To finish the night off, we had the amazing Nøgne Ø 100% Peated Ale. Our Ale Stars are no strangers to those Norwegian brewers (we were lucky enough to have Kjetil, the head brewer in for a session last year), but this was a first for Ale Stars. Despite exhibiting a huge amount of peat smoke, this beer was surprisingly drinkable, with a really smooth golden ale texture.
