Yesterday, I woke up at 7am Moscow Time and took a train to a plane, to a plane, to another train. Finally, after 22 hours of traveling, I arrived back in Boston, MA feeling very jet-lagged! My 2-week trip to Russia was fascinating. I can't wait to tell you all about it. But, for now, all I have the energy to do is post pics to Flickr. I took over 800 photographs, so it might take me awhile to sort through them all, but I will try to add new pics everyday. Here are some photos from my visit to the city of Moscow. Enjoy! :D

Traveling the World on a String

My phone rang very early this morning. It was United Airlines. They informed me that my flight from Boston to Washington, D.C. was cancelled. So, I had to re-book my flight. Now, I am flying Boston -Frankfurt, then on to Moscow from there (if all goes well)! I am scheduled to arrive in Russia only 2 hrs. later than originally planned. After I took care of that, I had a few extra hours to finish packing. I packed up some seed beads and the beaded self portrait I'm working on. I've never really done beadwork on an airplane because I'm usually on an overnight flight, but I do plan to work on it at my hotel in Moscow! Maybe I will even get to do a little beading with my friend Tanya. We'll see!

Anyways, it's funny to see my beaded face packed up in a little pencil box because that's exactly what I'll feel like until I arrive! I checked the news reports, and apparently the smog returned to the city of Moscow yesterday, but the weather report predicts rainstorms throughout the week. I'm hoping that will help to clear much of the air while I'm there. Wish me luck!

Also, just a quick note: I have decided to close my Etsy shop for 2 weeks. I will re-open during the first week of September. Raise a Beaded Eyebrow

Today, just a quick post to show you the progress of my beaded self portrait. I have added a few more colours and bugle beads for eyebrows! So, far, I like it, but I don't know if it really looks like me! B)

Beady Eye on Moscow

Thank you to those who have sent me words of encouragement regarding my upcoming trip to Moscow. I have been keeping my eye on the news stories, and as of now, I believe that the smog has lifted and the air is clean. If the winds change, smog could return to the city, but no one is certain. I also looked at the weather reports, and they are forecasting rain & thunderstorms for Monday into Tuesday - the day that I am due to arrive. I pray that this is true! Rain is much needed in Russia!

Like everyone else, I have been debating whether I should cancel my trip to Russia, reschedule my trip for a better time, change my destination and just go to St. Petersburg, or go on my trip to Moscow as planned. I am aware that the US Embassy in Moscow has issued a travel warning urging all Americans to cancel non-essential travel to the city, but this is only an alert. As of now, I think I will take the risk, and go to meet my friend. What would you do in this situation? :o

Fearful Faceless Felt

Lately, I've been staring at my computer screen (just like my self portrait sketch) searching for news about the smog situation in Moscow. The smog is caused by the many peat bog fires that have popped up around the city. The high temperatures and lack of wind have not helped the situation. The smog is so thick that you can barely see the Kremlin from a distance, and many people are wearing breathing masks in the streets. The smog has seeped into homes, office buildings, and even the subway system. People have died from smoke inhalation, homes have been destroyed by the fires, flights have been diverted due to lack of visibility, and travel & health warnings have been issued to anyone headed to the city. It seems like this will go on for weeks! I am concerned because I am due to travel to Moscow in 9 short days. I am seriously praying for wind & rain in Moscow! :o

Despite my worries, I have begun my beaded self portrait. I need something to take my mind off of things! So, I cut out 4 layers of felt in the shape of my face, and stitched them together. The nose sticks out a bit and one eye & part of my forehead is sunken a bit. I probably look like this when I have a headache due to stress and lack of sleep! :o

I've also picked out some recycled eyeglass lenses to use, just to make this piece a little more interesting. The kind folks at Central Square Eye Care (Cambridge) saved me a bag full of old eyeglass lenses to experiment with, and I thought what better way to use them than in a self portrait! Just another one of my beading experiments, I guess. We'll see what happens! B)

Sleepless Self Portrait Sketch

I haven't had much time for blogging the past few days. I've been pretty busy working and preparing for my trip to Russia. I have been doing a little beading. I've been working on a couple of small projects that I can't post on my blog just yet. I have been thinking about what my next big bead painting should be, but I think I'm going to wait until after my vacation to start that... In the meantime, I thought this week would be a great time to start something a little different - a beaded self portrait!

The above sketch is based on a photo I took of myself using Photo Booth. I suppose this is how I look while I'm working on my iMac, especially late at night. In case you didn't know, I am quite the night owl. I love to stay up late either beading or working on my 'puter, but at the same time, it bothers me because I haven't been getting much sleep lately. This is probably due to the fact that my 'day' job as a stagehand requires me to stay up until 1 or 2am (or later!) and then be back to work at 8am the next day. When I do have a night off, I find it hard to go to sleep at a normal hour. And, if I do try to go to sleep early, I find myself awake 4 hours later, at which point I get up to either check something on my computer or turn on Porcupine Tree music in an attempt to fall back asleep. It seems to be a vicious cycle these days- one that should be documented in tiny glass seed beads! :/

Summer Vacation Plan

Those who have been reading my blog for the past couple of years know that I like to travel in search of beads! In the past 3 years, I have visited England, France, Germany, Czech Republic, & Italy, and I am officially about to add one more to the list! Russia!

In a couple of weeks, I will be going to visit my longtime blogger friend, Tanya. Some of you know her as the owner of Greenbird.ru, an online bead supplier in Moscow! Tanya & I became friends when she interviewed me for a feature on her website. She is also the reason my beadwork got published in Russia's РУЧНАЯ РАБОТА (Handmade Magazine)! I am a bit nervous because I really can't speak any Russian, but despite that, I am very excited! I can't wait to see Red Square, Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, Bolshoi Theatre, St. Basil's Cathedral, and Tretyakov Gallery. I also hope to visit St. Petersburg for a few days. I would also like to do a little research regarding Russian beadwork/ bead artists. If I learn of any bead shops or artist galleries featuring beadwork, I will try to visit them! If you have ever been to Russia, and have any travel tips and/or suggestions, please leave a comment! :D

Since I only have a couple weeks before my trip, I have decided to wait until I return to start my next big piece. I am still deciding what I want to do- a nature painting, a classic car, a space shuttle, or a NYC scene... Right now, I am leaning towards doing a NYC scene, but also think that a space shuttle would be appropriate, as well!

Sinking St. Mark's Square Painting - Finished!

Time to celebrate! :D

Finally, after 4.5 months of beading and painting, I have finished my Sinking St. Mark's Square painting! I feel very accomplished! :D

This piece consists of extreme bead embroidery.

Glass seed beads, Murano glass beads, hammered gold crosses, felt, and acrylic paints were used to create a beaded St. Mark's Basilica & Campanile. These pieces were then stitched to a 24" x 36" acrylic painted canvas depicting a beaded acqua alta.

This painting will forever remind me of the fragile state of Venice, Italy - a magical city that remains in my heart always. ♥

Custom Hammered Gold Crosses

Yesterday, I went to Beaucoup Beads in Scituate Harbor, MA to pick up a special order. Custom hammered gold metal crosses for my beaded St. Mark's Basilica! These were made by my friend Erin Meagher. Erin has done custom work for me before - she made hammered silver rims for my beaded motorcycle. Also, she has recently opened an Etsy shop where she sells some of her jewelry. For my sinking St. Mark's Square painting, Erin created 7 hammered crosses with loops at the bottom instead of the top. I really like how these turned out, so last night I stitched them to the back of my beadwork. Below, you can see a sneak peek of how they look on my canvas:

Drowning in Freeform Peyote Stitch

Believe it or not, I've actually been busy beading during the past week. Working in freeform peyote stitch, I'm creating small strips of beadwork measuring 4-6" long. These will be the ripples in the water which floods St. Mark's Square (during acqua alta season) in my painting. I think I am about halfway through making these. They are quite time consuming and right now I feel they are an exercise in futility! You can see how I plan to use these pieces in the photo below. Eventually, they will be stitched directly to the canvas. How do you think it will look when it is finished? (If it will ever be finished!)

SSAC Blue Ribbon Members' Show

I enjoyed meeting some of the new members, as well as a few of the old! I got quite a few questions about my beaded Yellow Submarine and my artistic process, too! I am very excited about being a new member of the Cambridge Art Association. It is a fantastic organization with many opportunities. I think it will be a wonderful stepping stone in my beading career! :D

Peyote-Stitched Water

I hope everyone had a wonderful 4th of July weekend! It has been crazy hot here in the Boston area - we are in the middle of a heat wave! I don't mind though - I like it hot. It reminds me of my trip to Venice, Italy! So for the past couple days I've been working on my beaded St. Mark's Square painting. I painted in the gray buildings on the right side of the deteriorating Campanile. They are actually empty lots where these buildings used to be. The buildings no longer exist in my painting because they too deteriorated & sunk into the Grand Canal. It is my intention that the right side of the painting look very contemporary with its hard edges - perhaps to represent the future of Venice. The left side of the painting is meant to look more traditional representing how Piazza San Marco once looked. My beaded Basilica & Campanile will represent how it actually looks today...

Now, I must work on the beaded water which will fill in the lower section of the painting. I started working in 3-drop peyote stitch. I am using several different green and gray seed beads. I plan to make many different pieces of beadwork that I will eventually stitch directly to the painted canvas. These will represent the acqua alta which floods St. Mark's Square every year. How do you think it will look?

Blue Painted Venetian Windows

Long time, no post! If you have been following me on Twitter, you'll know that I have been pretty busy this week. I was busy working my regular job; I volunteered at the Cambridge Art Association one day; I dropped off 3 of my small beaded paintings at University Place Gallery for the Art Fair; and I dropped off my beaded Yellow Submarine painting, The Hijack, at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery for this month's New Members Show!

Finally last night, I had some time to work on the canvas for my beaded St. Mark's Square a little more. I mostly worked on the buildings to the left of my beaded St. Mark's Basilica. These first started out just outlined in gray acrylic paint. Then, I painted an off-white over the buildings. Now, I am adding some colour! I also removed the masking tape from the right side of the painting. This portion obviously needs a little work, but my intention is to make it look as though these buildings have somehow gone missing from the painting! They must have deteriorated and sunk into the Grand Canal! What do you think? Back to painting & beading!

CAA New Members Show & Art Fair

Today, just a quick announcement to let you know that this year, I will be participating in Cambridge Art Association's New Members Show! This is an un-juried show featuring works in all mediums! Most works will be available for sale including my beaded Yellow Submarine painting, The Hijack. :)

The infamous beaded Yellow Submarine hijack of 1968 is the most probable explanation for all of this anti-music... MEDIA: glass seed beads, acrylics. 24" x 36".

Trapped Starfish Freeform Beaded Earrings

Yesterday, I took a break from painting to make a new pair of freeform peyote beaded earrings. These are my second 'Trapped' jewelry piece, inspired by the freeform beaded starfish necklace listed in my Etsy shop. I used sterling silver starfish charms I purchased from Artbeads.com, sterling silver stud earring findings, and a mix of blue & black seed beads. The blue beads represent the water on the Gulf Coast, and the black/metallic seed beads represent the BP oil spill. The innocent starfish are trapped in this mess, and will not make it out alive. How does this make you feel?

As soon as I take some more photos, I will list these for sale in my Etsy shop. But before I do that, I'm going to enjoy my Sunday by spending the day at the beach. Hopefully, I will see some living starfish as well as other interesting sea creatures!

Semi-Painted Buildings

For the past couple of days, I have been working on my sinking St. Mark's Square painting. I took Denise's advice and decided to leave the water as it is for now. Instead, I began working on the buildings which will surround my beaded St. Mark's Basilica. Working from an enlarged photo on my iphone, I painted in some of the structures using gray acrylics. I still have a bit more to do on this section, but for now, I think it's finally starting to look like something! What do you think? :o

Painted Sky

I am super shy about showing the progress of my painting on canvas, but here goes anyways... Above, you can see that I masked off an area to the right of my beaded Campanile. It is my intention that this area of my canvas will not be painted. I'm not sure if this idea will work or not - it's another one of my art experiments! Then, I painted a light bluish-gray winter sky above my sinking St. Mark's Square. Below St. Mark's Basilica will be flood water. Right now, it is several shades of green because much water in the canals of Venice looks that way, but I'm thinking that the these waters need to appear more gray, so I will probably paint over this. I also hope to do a little beadwork for the water (eventually), but I haven't planned this part out yet... I guess we'll have to see what happens! Back to painting... :o

Beadwork at the Arts Festival

This weekend, I went to the 55th Annual Arts Festival in Cohasset, MA. This is a beautiful event! There are a great number of local vendors there selling fine jewelry, art, and crafts. There is also food (lobster rolls & strawberry shortcake!), live entertainment, and fun for the kids! And of course in the main tent, you will find the Juried & Members Art Shows. That is where my beaded Great Blue Heron painting can be seen. Upon viewing all of the artworks, I noticed another beaded painting there which I wanted to share. This piece was created on a loom. Check out 'Cocktails Anyone?' by Doug Johnson:

I was in awe of this beadwork. It is made from 90,500 tiny glass seed beads! I can't imagine how long it took to create! Check out Doug's website if you get the chance. I think you'll be amazed at his work! Also, check out more photos of the Arts Festival below.

Canvas Sketch of St. Mark's Square

Last night, I set up my easel for painting on a 24" x 36" stretched canvas. The canvas may seem slightly large but the beadwork I will be stitching to it measures approx. 12" x 18" tall. This size should give the beadwork some breathing room. Before I start anything, I wanted to sketch out the image I have had in my mind for the past several months. Sinking St. Mark's Square...

I am beginning to see why Napoleon referred to Piazza San Marco as 'the finest drawing room of Europe'... On the left of my beaded St. Mark's Basilica you will see buildings that look to be drawn in a more traditional sense. The tallest building is St. Mark's Clocktower. On the other side of my beadwork, to the right of the Campanile, you see a more sparse sketch of the buildings that seem to have once existed. These are the Doge's Palace, and Procuratie Nuova which houses the Museo Archeologico and Museo Correr. As the flood waters of a beaded Acqua Alta rise, these buildings will slowly sink and my drawings will eventually disappear... :o

Trapped Within the Beadwork

During the past couple of weekends, I worked on a new summertime-themed freeform peyote necklace for my Etsy shop. I used a Toho mix of midnight purple & teal seed beads as well as a sterling silver starfish pendant that I got from Artbeads.com. I also used a mix of black glass seed beads, as well.

My inspiration for this piece was indeed the disastrous BP oil spill that has taken place in the Gulf Coast. The summer of 2010 has been marked with the worst environmental catastrophe in the history of the United States. Everyday, I can't help but to think about all of the innocent birds and sea creatures whose lives have ended as a result of man's greediness. I wanted to express this thought in a necklace, so I purposely trapped the starfish within the black oil beadwork. Somehow, beads seem to make every idea look beautiful, but this piece definitely doesn't look 'right' in my eyes. I hope that whoever sees it will be compelled to take a closer look and wonder why the starfish is not moving freely... How does this beadwork make you feel?
