Mohd Akbar - The Disabled Rickshaw Puller at Badarpur, Delhi

As a part of my daily routine enroute to work I daily have to board a rickshaw from Badarpur to my office, which is about a 10 min drive on a rickshaw, as always today as well got off the DTC bus and boarded the first possible rickshaw, as the puller started to pull, my attention drew towards his movements which were rather awkward and leaning from side to side, the it came to my notice that the puller is disabled, as relevant from the attached pictures, the puller had a problem in his right leg and miserable it was approximately about 4 inches short of the other leg, as I spoke to him he narrated that approximately 12 years ago he had met with an accident which led him to disability, also that the poor chap cannot walk and carries a crutch to aide walking, he has 3 kids, two daughters and son along with his wife, and he is the sole bread earner of his family.

He says that it is a hell job for him to walk and with this disability is barely able to walk or carry his chores, but yet, on the stronger side he decided not to be a beggar but to earn his livelihood through his hard work, the work not only for himself but also to support his family. He proudly claimed that he is the sole bread earner and a very hard worker, pulling his rickshaw all day long ferrying passengers, and yes he does pull pretty fast!!!

We indeed should show our appreciation to such people who are striving extremely hard to earn their livelihood inspite of their disability.

To all my readers and colleagues, if you are taking a rickshaw from Badarpur Border, then please spare a minute of your precious time to see for this guy, as any money given to him is not only the fare that he has hard earned, but also an appreciation from you.

I believe and recommend that we should give something extra to such people.

Once again it’s that time of the year when the clouds of darker shades start covering the sky. The smell of newly wet earth fills your senses; birds you never see through the years fill the world around you with their excitement. It’s that time when the six-year-old wants to run away to the neighboring orchards to reclaim his mossy throne in the shadowy world. It’s that time of the year when the teenager wants to go back to his bedroom window where he can spend the lazy afternoon watching the non-stop rain drops. It is that time of the year when newly adult wants to walk under the shared umbrella – shoulder to shoulder – dreaming about the world he wants to create.

Monsoon Clouds

It’s been quite some time that I didn’t find any reason to complain about rains. Wherever I went, I felt it’s a party arranged by you. Standing under the grey canopy – absorbing the ballad of life around – never saw it coming. The gust of wind caught me full on. Lurking behind the unseen dark corners of room, they swept me off. With no apparent reason – it wrings the heart out. Tide after tide of melancholic memories, flashing faces and familiar voices calling. Shakings legs want to give away – head spinning. As if perched on the threshold of a huge time gateway – seeing the past and present swirling together.

Nostalgic Rain

Weary eyes tries to shut down – in its last-ditch effort to break away from all that’s around; a desperate effort to curl inside the shell; frantically trying to hold onto something – someone – in that madness. Then a sudden feeling – a droplet lands on the face – and then another. The waiting skins absorb them and thedroplets find their way to the heart. The monsoon kisses assure – the lips slowly curls back. The wind still there, but the accompanying drops of nectar embrace. Sanity claws back – the soaked eyes open to welcome the washed off world.

It is that time of the year once again – when it’s hard to reign in the romantic heart. The Eternal Romantic once again rides on his optimism. It is that time of the year again, when memories run amuck. It is that time of the year again when eyes can only see love around. The soul feels the passion that was and that still is – feels the romance that was and what can never die. It is that time of the year when rain comes dancing back to life.

The drives in the rain on bike, wow that always has and will be amazing but has faded in memoirs now for none do really occur, as I sit on stairs starring at the rain and being mesmerized by its mesmerizing dance, yet I wish that there is dance, for hopes never die and clouds do have a silver lining........

Just wish you were there

The Seattle-based artist refers to his pieces as drawings stereographic animation. The stereo images are more commonly recognized as two parallel images fixed, varying only slightly angled and designed to be seen so that the mind combines the two to create a 3D image. Similarly, the angular multi ilutsraciones Fagerholm and are combined into a single image that gives us an illusory sense of depth.

Why is Pink equal to women?
It isn't just the desi authorities who're hell bent on pinkifying women's transport, the stereotype extends across China and Paris too.

We know women travellers in Delhi swear by their ladies-only compartment and their ladies-only seats. The Delhi Transport Corporation, after increasing the number of women's seats in buses, has come up with a not-so- innovative plan to ensure that women get access to these seats: the seats will be coloured in, no surprises here, pink. We at DT are all for seats reserved for women to make our daily commuting less of a suffering than what it used to be, but we don't get the authority's obsession with the colour pink - from the pink autos of Gurgaon to the pink buses for the Noida commuters or the pink labelling for the women's compartment in the metro.

One would hope that everyone is over the cliched pink-for-girls and blue-for-boys stereotype. But as far as the transport model goes, that is certainly not the case. Forgive us for thinking this pink-means-girl funda was another one of those things that only our decision-makers were completely capable of, because after a quick search, we were surprised to find this colour-codedness making an appearance in transport systems across the world. Japan and China, among others, have daily women-only trains, all labelled pink much like the Delhi Metro. Pink-labelling in buses can also be spotted across Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico and Pakistan while pink cabs can be seen on the roads in London and South Africa.

So, does this mean that the colour pink is crucial to the success of any such women-only venture? Without looking too far, the 'ladies special' trains in Mumbai, which have been functioning for many years, prove that a colour-coding such as this doesn't change anything. If any man sees an empty seat in a DTC bus, do you think the colour of the seat is going to make any difference to him?

Nupam Billa, a PR professional, says, "This stereotype is meant to satisfy the baboo authorities who just can't think beyond pink. I have never thought about pink labelling before entering the women's compartment in the Metro. Would I have not stepped in had it been yellow, green or purple? Who really cares?"

Shreya Talwar, a DU student, added, "It's a stereotype like any other and whoever makes these decisions, needs to think beyond pink."

All Ideas and expressions are of the individual only and in no way meant to harm any person or community in any way, this is my site and for me only, expresses me, if you like it you may read it, if you dont like it I am sorry, this is my and may not apply to anyone else.

Women you should never date

Women you should never date

Make sure you avoid women of these sorts, to stay out of trouble. We tell you why

Your ex-girlfriend

It's best not to revisit a past relationship if things did not end well. Primarily because, you two were incompatible and had some serious issues, which would still be a bone of contention, if you were to get together. It's easy to fancy an ex in a moment of weakness, especially when you are lonely, and you may choose to forget the reason why you broke up and jump back in the relationship, only to regret it.

Your best friend's sister

Avoid getting involved with your best bud's sister. Not only will it destroy your friendship with your closest pal, if things don't work out, you are also likely to be at risk of being punched in the face for hurting his little sister. Also, you can forget about crying on his shoulder when things are not going great between you and his sister, as there's a direct conflict of interest here, and he may not always choose your side.

Women who are bad news

You know that dating her can be fun, but it will get you into a lot of trouble. Always remember it's best to be safe than sorry. Do not give into temptation or you will rue your decision for the rest of your life.

The high-maintenance gold digger

Stay away from her, unless you want savings to be wiped clear like your bank account. Not only will she expect you to splurge on her every whim, but will also pick faults with you and blame you for spending too much time at the office, ignoring the fact that you are working hard so that you two can live a comfortable life. It won't end there, her "good friends" will encourage her to take you to the cleaners when she wants to get out of the relationship, as she is tired of it.

Your friend's ex

If you value your friendship with your best pal, avoid dating his ex. Word will go around your circle of friends and it will do no good for your reputation. Besides, it could strain your relationship, if he has not moved on and will make things awkward whenever all of you decide to socialise with common friends.

Approximately 30 to 60 percent of men will cheat on their spouses, according to numerous studies.

It has been revealed that for every six men who will cheat, there are four men who will be faithful, the Huffington Post reported.

It should come as no surprise that some men cheat. Whether it's the President of the United Sates, the top golfer in the world or a world class musician, it's a proven fact that when it comes to cheating on their spouses, some men just can't keep it in their pants.

Guys who cheat are pretty transparent and predictable. In fact, there are three major signs that accurately predict if a guy will cheat on you.

Firstly he's secretive. Guys who cheat often lead double lives, and in order to do so, they have to cover their tracks.

A guy who is secretive and doesn't reveal much about himself or his life is a guy who is a prime candidate to be featured on an upcoming episode of " Cheaters."

Communication and the willingness to be an open book are two of the most important indicators of a happy and successful relationship.

And if a guy is keeping secrets in the beginning, look out because you are headed for trouble.

Secondly if he's selfish and self-indulgent. Guys who cheat do so because they are only focused on one thing -- themselves.

The good news is that guys like these are easy to spot. Guys who are selfish and self-indulgent tend to be like that in all aspects of their lives.

If you want to get a good gauge of the moral character and integrity of the man you are dating, look at the way he lives his life and the way he treats others.

Signs he is cheating on you (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)
If you start noticing that he is only out for himself, and he obviously doesn't care about others (including you) aside from what they can do for him, there is only one thing you should do -- run!

Lastly if he has a sudden change in behavior. Cheating guys will suddenly change their behavior, and in numerous ways.

He might make a sudden change in his appearance or grooming habits, or it could be a sudden change in his work schedule where all of a sudden he's working late, has to travel and can't be reached.

But the most common sign is when your sex life decreases, and he shows less of an interest in you in the bedroom.

There are some guys out there who can't be trusted and some who can.

The key is being able to recognize a potential cheater before the relationship begins.

All Ideas and expressions are of the individual only and in no way meant to harm any person or community in any way, this is my site and for me only, expresses me, if you like it you may read it, if you dont like it I am sorry, this is my and may not apply to anyone else.

Is romance really age related ?

Is romance really age related? (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

When it comes to wooing a lady, older men are said to score over the younger ones

According to a recent survey, men — like fine wine and cheese — just get better with age. The survey claims that at 53, men become more romantic and are more likely to surprise their partners with romantic symbols such as roses, champagne and poetry.

Many experts, however, dispute this. Romance, they say, is all in the mind and has really nothing to do with age. Claiming that it's all about eagerness, some experts opine that if a man really likes someone, he will be more than eager to indulge her with romantic gestures, no matter how old or how young he is.

They reason that younger men are less likely to go in for romantic gestures is because they could just go wrong. Experts reason that older men may have tried and tested formulae, which younger men are yet to master. Hence, they add, if a young woman feels that the men she is dating are rubbish at romance, maybe she should go out with an older man and figure out if they are really better at this game.

One can't really put an age on romance. It's a different story every time. It all depends onthe situation that prevails — and of course, the couple. Romance can happen to anyone and more importantly, at any time — it's just the moment when it arrives. The best advice experts give is to be spontaneous.

Virtual vs real friends

A recent survey says people are happier and laugh 50% more when talking to a friend face-to-face. So, it's safe to conclude that virtual friendships don't count any more

It's the same scenario with most of us. We have hundreds of — some even have 1,000-plus — friends on social networking sites, but only a handful of 'real' ones. Real friends whom we hang out with, share personal details and spend quality time with. And yet, we keep chatting with our virtual friends on social networking sites almost on a daily basis, instead of nurturing real friendships.

A recent survey concluded that virtual friends don't count. People are happier and laugh 50% more when talking to a friend face-to-face. Also, people find that the most satisfying relationships are with a handful of close friends, with an 'outer ring' of 10 significant others.

Case in point
Nicole Cyrus, 26, banker, has more than 800 friends on a social networking website. "I have way too many friends on my list, but since I don't open up easily, I have few friends who really understand me. So, it is important for me to interact with those friends and I make it a point to do so. Even if it wouldn't be a face-to-face interaction, I make sure I keep in touch," says she.

For instance, Nicole videochats with her best friend who stays in Australia, at least once every week, if not more. She also keeps in touch with other close friends, via phone. "But yes, I guess face-to-face interaction is way more important than just virtual friendship and relationship," she concludes.

Virtual friends are no substitute for real ones
Friends on social networking sites cannot be a substitute for real friends, says psychologist Mansi Hasan, adding, "Social networking sites are the easiest way to keep in touch with those countless people, who we wouldn't be able to keep in touch with due to our busy lives. However, the 'emotional touch' cannot be easily replaced by internet chats, comments and posts."

Hasan says research does suggest that non-verbal and verbal cues both contribute towards creating a connection between two people. The real connection only clicks when we are able to experience that friendship in person, otherwise it's like experiencing a vacation through a virtual tour.

No face-to-face talks on social networking sites
Clinical psychologist Johann Thomas also agrees that friends on social networking sites cannot be a substitute for real friends. The reason is, no amount of virtual friendships will ever prepare us for direct interaction with others. "It is also possible that most people who are comfortable making friends virtually do so because it gives them an option of avoiding face-to-face (FTF) contact with others. They are worried about negative conclusions being drawn about them in a FTF meeting where they will not be able to hide their drawbacks (awkward mannerisms, speech deficits, language difficulty, etc.). Typing online also gives people time to respond, which is a luxury we don't have in FTF communications. This lack of time also reveals our lack of wit and poise in FTF (which we do not want to be known)," he explains.

Face-to-face interactions are more satisfying
According to the study, people are happier and laugh 50% more when talking face-to-face with friends or via webcam than when using social networking sites. Thomas explains,
"The reason could be that human brain reads subliminal cues while interacting face-to-face, which go beyond the individual reading of gestures, facial expressions and words. This integration helps us to better understand what the others are saying or hiding."

Talking on phone/texting vs sharing a smile
The study also said that talking on the phone and texting does not make people feel as good as sharing a smile. "One reason for this is that the majority of processing is done by our vision and we are heavily dependent on sight. Due to this, we have to rely on seeing the genuineness of others' affect (outward expression of internal emotion)," says Thomas.
9 Things never to say to your child (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Being a parent is difficult and so is coming off as a proud child. It's only human to give vent to your rage by using harsh words. However, when the recipient of your outrage is your own child, it might have uncertain and unmanageable repercussions.

We list 9 insensitive things that you should avoid saying to your child.

1. I was much more responsible when I was your age
Comparing your child and giving him an example of what all you were capable of when you were a kid is the first big mistake parents make. Their irritation stems from 'expectations' - expectations of bringing up the 'perfect' kid. Try and recall your shortcomings as a child and what all troubles you bothered your parents with. You are the elder one in the relationship hence you ought to know more. A statement such as this will break your child's confidence.

2. You always end up taking wrong decisions
Don't penalise your kid for being immature. Everyone is allowed to make mistakes and it is in fact a part of the learning process. He might have taken up a field of study that doesn't interest you or perhaps working with a company that you're not very proud of, but that doesn't mean you accuse him of the decisions. Your job as a parent is to guide him, not force him to obey your opinions.

3. Why can't you be more like your brother/sister?
This is once again an unreasonable comparison and a common one at that. Avoid seeding in animosity between your children by comparing their abilities. Doing so may create a fissure between the siblings. You don't want your kid to harbour negative feelings for you, hence avoid assessing your kids.

4. Leave me alone!
Adults have huge responsibilities to take care of, responsibilities that children are innocently oblivious of. And there are times when we want to be left alone too. Kids are incapable of understanding the gravity of such situations. An impatient outburst of 'Leave me alone!' can make your child feel neglected, unwanted and depressed at the same time. Show some patience and avoid saying something bad to him.

5. You should be ashamed of yourself
This statement is outright harsh and saying such an awful thing to any child is simply 'bad'. Yes, there are mischievous kids who go about pestering people with a devil-may-care attitude but that does not mean you reprimand him like this. There are better and milder ways to make the child understand the difference between good and bad.

6. You're just like your father/mother
Not all married couples are happy living together and the bitterness in their relationship often translates into exchange of unkind words against each other. Some relationships end in separation too. Either ways, kids are a witness to this mutual hostility and criticism. So when you shower your partner's animosity on your kid, that's when he begins to lose respect.

7. You always find ways to hurt me
There are times when children hurt their parents' sentiments by going against their wishes. Most times it is unintentional but there are kids who do so on purpose. However, saying something like the above statement would make your child feel guilty about his/her decision. He might comply with your demands to make you happy but you'd be taking away his right to happiness in the long run. Let your children take their own decisions and let them live a guilt-free life.

8. It's better to be childless than have a kid like you
The above statement is mostly an extreme emotional outburst but can have grave consequences on the kid. Unquestionably, it is the most hurtful thing you can ever say to your child. No matter what the crisis is, saying something like this could make you regret for life.

9. Get rid of the bad company of your friends
We (read adults) don't think before making friends. Neither do children. The only difference is that we know how to stay away from bad company and children don't. Their friends mean the world to them and therefore you cannot just order them to get a new set of 'good' friends.

The old Master instructed the unhappy young lady to put a handful of salt in a glass of water and then to drink it.

“How does it taste?” the Master asked. “Very bad” Said the lady.

The Master then asked the young lady to take another handful of salt and put it in the lake.

The two walked in silence to the nearby lake and when the apprentice swirled his handful of salt into the lake, the old man said, “Now drink from the lake.”

As the water dripped down the young lady’s chin, the Master asked, “How does it taste?” “Good!” remarked the apprentice. “Do you taste the salt?” asked the Master.

“No,” said the young lady.

The Master said, “The pain of life is pure salt; no more, no less. The amount of pain in life remains the same, exactly the same. But the amount we taste the ‘pain’ depends on the container we put it into.

So when you are in pain, the only thing you can do is to enlarge your sense of things….. Stop being a glass. Become a lake!”

Baking soda for your skin

Never heard baking soda and skin care being mentioned in the same sentence? Baking soda is known for being a staple in the kitchen but it's also one of the most useful and not to mention inexpensive ingredients around when it comes to DIY skin care! Grab a box of baking soda from your kitchen and get ready to see some big changes courtesy these baking soda beauty fixes!

Face wash
Make a thick paste out of two teaspoons baking soda and one teaspoon warm water. Wash your face with water and apply the mixture that you have prepared in gentle circular strokes. Rinse off the mixture with warm water.

Exfoliate
Baking soda makes for an excellent as well as gentle exfoliator. Add one teaspoon of baking soda to your cleanser and massage face gently to slough off dead skin cells. If you have oily skin, you can add one-teaspoon baking soda to two tablespoons of uncooked oats. Mix this with water and scrub your face and skin in circular motions gently. Oats combined with baking soda is great for deep cleansing and clearing clogged pores.

Footsie
While leading busy, stressful lives, its our feet that take the biggest beating. It's sad that the feet do not even figure in most people's list of skincare. Treat your feet to a baking soda and warm water soak. Baking soda will clean your tootsies and also soften the skin. Mix half a cup baking soda for every four liters of water in a tub and soak your feet for at least half an hour. Moisturise your squeaky clean, soft feet with a thick cream.

Bathing soda
Baking soda makes for a great detox bath. Indulging in a detox bath every once in a while is good for your skin since it helps in purging your body of toxins. Add one or two cups of baking soda along with two cups of Epsom salt in your bath and soak in for about 30 minutes. Make sure to sip on water all through or you might feel terribly dehydrated

Soothe a sunburn
Relieve irritated, itchy and sun burnt skin with baking soda. Soak a clean cloth in baking soda and water to make a cool compress or run a lukewarm bath with half a cup baking soda in it to soothe irritated skin especially when there's no aloe Vera on hand.

Cuti care
Dip your nail brush in baking soda and scrub your nails and cuticles to give them a good washing. If you are suffering from nail fungus (a persistent problem with ladies who love their acrylic nails), then mix two parts baking soda and one part water and make a paste. Apply generously on the infected nail and leave it on for 10 minutes. Do this twice a day till the fungus is gone.

Acne pack
Wash your face clean and then apply a mask of baking soda and water if you have an acne ridden face. Leave it on for five to 10 minutes and wash off with warm water. This also gets rid of blackheads.

Yong Hsueh, a Shaolin monk, appeared on the Chinese version of Britain's Got Talent to demonstrate his ability to get kicked in the crotch without suffering injury. He told the audience: "Steel crotch Kongfu is an ancient art, with roots stretching back to ancient China. "It's a practice to strengthen and protect the male genital organs so there is less chance they are injured or incapacitated in battle."

Cross legged male members of the audience watched in shock as various members of the panel were invited to boot the monk – who simply bowed and smiled after each blow – between the legs. The monk said this skill could only be learned by a student that started in childhood – and it involves pushing the testicles into the body where they could not be hurt.

Everyone has their own particular talent. For Paul Hunn, it's the ability to belch at 110 decibels. He achieved the Guinness World record for the loudest burp on the set of The New Paul O'Grady Show, London, UK, on 24 September 2008.

4. The contortionist who can squeeze through the head of a tennis racquet

Captain Frodo is a very disconcerting figure. It could be his semi-naked and very white body, bulging eyes, tattooed back, or perhaps the 2in black pegs skewered through his nipples that do it. Or maybe it is the small fact that he is currently squeezing his body through a 10in diameter tennis racquet - strings removed. Oh yes, and to speed things along a bit, he's now dislocating one joint after another, leaving spaces where shoulders should be and white limbs flopping and flapping in all the wrong places like a rag doll gone wrong. He's a contortionist in La Clique, a circus that also features juggling, sword-swallowing, strong men acts, acrobatics - indeed, pretty much everything but the bearded lady.

5. The man who can pull a minivan using his eyelids

Next time your car needs a tow but it turns out you haven't got the right equipment, talk to this man. Stuntman Xie Zhongcai in Hefei, China's eastern Anhui Province, has another idea that fits the job. Just tie the car to your ear and head off. And if that seems like it might sting just a little, how about his next trick.

If the locals in Heping Square were left with their mouths open after his first stunt, they couldn't believe their eyes the second time – since the stuntman hooked up the minivan to his eye sockets!

6. The man who can throw up anything

Liang Yuxin trumps even the very worst hangovers to become world throwing-up record holder. The Chinese man, 25, from Xia Mei has stunned doctors with his ability to regurgitate anything from a live fish to a 50-inch chain. While the process of dispensing with ten or more mojitos in the morning may feel unnatural, Liang Yuxin's ability to throw up jewellery puts even the bitterest katzenjammer to shame. The champion chunderer said: 'I found out I could do it when I was a boy and I accidentally swallowed a ball and found I could bring it back up at will. 'Now I seem to be able to swallow pretty much anything.'

Liang has taken to regularly swallowing fish and whatever else will fit down his oesophagus for kicks, and is now talking about going for the Guinness World Record in coin-swallowing. 'The record is ten by a man in Britain and I can do 11,' he said.

7. The man who can squirt milk with his eye

lker Yilmaz might just hold one of the world's most bizarre world records. The Turkish construction worker poured milk into his hand, loudly snorted it up his nose and squirted it 9.2 feet out of his left eye in what he hopes will be recognized as a new world record.

8. The man who can fit an entire Coke can in his mouth

Meet the man who won a place in the Guinness World Records for having a mouth so rubbery he can fit an entire Coke can in it… sideways. Francisco Domingo Joaquim's mouth stretches to a massive 6.69-inch-long, which adjudicators from the famous record book say is the world's widest. The 20-year-old record breaker from Sambizanga, Angola, is said to have shot to fame after showing off his 'talent' at local markets and football games.

9. The woman who plays two recorders with her nose

Performer Claire Hawes left Britain's Got Talent judges speechless after showing off her extraordinary abilities with the recorder. Not content with playing just one instrument, she took to the stage with two - which she promptly proceeded to blow with her nose, instead of the more conventional method of using her mouth. Claire was just one of a clutch of performers who hoped to make it through to the finals of the hit TV show.

10. The professor who can draw a perfect freehand circle

Alexander Overwijk draws a perfect freehand circle 1m in diameter in less than a second.

Beauty may lie in the eye of the beholder, but every woman needs the perfect skin care to radiate her beauty and youth.

The cosmetic industry has flourished in recent times, with several advertisements and commercials, in a variety of media, constantly focusing on the importance of having beautiful and younger-looking skin. If you're among the ones who desire attractive looks and wish to appear younger than your real age, you must ensure that you are using the right products and following the right regimen. Here, we will discuss some of the most common myths and the truth behind them.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #1: Sunscreen isn't necessary during winters or cloudy days

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: This is among the most popular myths and a large number of women actually fall for it. Regardless of whether it is sunny or cloudy outside, it is essential to remember that the UV rays emitted by the sun reach the surface of the earth even through thick clouds. Your skin is constantly exposed to risks when you are outdoors during the day, and even on cloudy days, the UV rays still have the potential to inflict unnecessary consequences such as wrinkles and age spots. Constant exposure to the sun's harmful rays can also cause skin cancer, so put on the sunblock every time you leave home and head outdoors.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #2: Expensive products are excellent anti-aging and skin care treatments

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: Most people are of the belief that the price of a product determines its quality. While that is probably true when it comes to some of the latest technological gadgets, it may not really apply to cosmetics. The price is not a factor to consider when purchasing beauty products. Instead, you must check the ingredients used in making a particular product along with their quality, in order to ensure that it's compatible with your skin. Many products are priced slightly lower than others are, and yet deliver good results, even if they are not as expensive as the high-end items.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #3: Washing your face with water and soap will keep your skin healthy

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: As it is often said, "Too much of a thing is never good!" The statement is especially true in the case of skin care treatments. Constantly cleansing the skin on your face, particularly with water and soap, will damage the skin more than nourishing it. The skin requires oils, and washing your face ever so often will simply reduce the level of elasticity and make the skin appear old over time.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #4: Rich eye creams are the solution for wrinkles

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: Eye creams have been made to minimise and prevent wrinkles from appearing around your eyes. However, you shouldn't just choose an eye cream because it is stuffed with expensive ingredients. Several products use harsh chemicals, and expose you to the risk of potentially clogging your pores, irritating the skin, and damaging it.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #5: Skin dryness can be eliminated using moisturising soaps

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: Soap, regardless of its manufacturer or ingredients, is still soap. Although some types of soap contain plenty of moisturisers, they still have components that lead to dryness of the skin, after a few hours of use. So, soaps must be used carefully and less frequently.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #6: Irritation is the stepping-stone to healthy skin

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: Many women who use skin care and anti-aging products believe that the initial irritation experienced by the skin when using a product, ensures positive results in the long run. However, they must remember that there are several effective products with ingredients, which work well on your skin without causing any irritation, peeling or dryness. In fact, effective anti-aging ingredients such as glycolic acid can be used to minimise irritation and maximise results.

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Myth #7: A product for one, is a product for all

Anti-Aging Skin Treatments Truth: Skin types vary between all individuals. A product that may work well for one could prove less effective for another. Consulting a dermatologist ensures that a proper regimen is developed, the progress is monitored, and that some changes are made depending on the results you experience. According to a survey carried out by the University of California, around 64 per cent of the female respondents said that they would opt for an anti-aging regimen that followed the guidelines of a physician.

Common myths exist in all walks of life, but those without scientific backing must be disregarded, especially when it comes to skin care and anti-aging treatments. Consulting with a skin care specialist is the best option, as it will help you get that perfect, younger-looking skin that every woman desires.

5 most common skin problems and solutions (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Your skin has to face pollution, direct sunlight, stress, infection and sweat, among other factors.

This can have negative effects on your skin. Since it takes a lot of effort to add a skin care regime in our daily busy schedule, we help you by listing out the most common skin troubles and their effective solutions.

*Data Credit: Samantha Priest is an Australian guest blogger, a health expert, and a part time basketball coach, specialising in teaching players how to jump higher.

Acne
Many teenagers suffer from acne. Unfortunately this skin condition does not disappear with puberty. Many adults keep having troubles with acne. High levels of humidity, stressful situations as well as sweating cause acne. Cleaning and washing your skin on the daily basis might be useless. It is very difficult to deal with acne on your own. That's why you need to visit dermatologist to find an optimal treatment. Acne requires serious medical treatment, simple cosmetic products wouldn't work.

Razor burn and ingrown hair
It is not a secret that shaving irritates the sensitive facial skin. Razor burn causes one of the worst skin sensations. Many men are familiar with its consequences: red skin and serious irritation. As a result you may even have pimples for several days.

Pay attention to your pre shave routine if you don't want to get any razor burn. You need to wash your face with warm water prior to shaving. Avoid using any old rusty razors. Shaving cream will soften the hair and prepare your skin for shaving. If you still got the burn, apply some cortisone cream on your skin to ease the pain.

Ingrown hair is another side effect of shaving. If you want to forget about the problem of ingrown hair avoid shaving against the grain.

Dark circles
If you are stressed at work and don't get enough sleep, your skin will betray you right away. Bad eating habits would also affect your skin condition. The combination of these reasons causes dark under-eye circles. Healthy eating habits and a lot of water would improve the quality of your skin. You can also put two slices of cucumber or wet tea bags on your eye lids and relax for a bit.

Sunburns
Many people often forget about sun protection. UV radiation is very harmful for your skin. Fair-skinned people often suffer from sunburns as their skin does not produce enough melanin to protect it from the sun. Don't forget to apply sunscreen before you go on the street. After sun care is also important. High levels of sun exposure will dry your skin. Apply some moisturiser once you are indoors. Vitamin E would also help you deal with sunburns.

Dry skin
Cold temperatures and constant air heating may irritate your skin. Dry and itchy skin is a normal thing during the winter season. Both men and women should apply moisturisers on the daily basis. Moisturiser would soften the rough male skin and make shaving easier.
Beauty lies in… my hair

In Kerala, women splurge as much as `6,000 per month only on hair treatments

When one compliments a woman for her lovely tresses, they never know the price she has to pay to maintain the look. Women in Kerala are spending a major portion of their income or pocket money at beauty salons, that too for hair treatments.
From hot oil massage to hair spa and hair colouring, they like to have the treatments done at a salon rather than in the confines of their home. "Women of all ages are well aware of the evolving trends these days, and they are more concerned about their hair than anything else," says Rajeshwari, a beauty expert.
"Irrespective of the cost, they are ready to spent money to maintain the smoothness and texture of their hair," says Theertha Sasidharan, a beautician in the city.
Sujith, a beauty expert, informs that on an average, a woman spends `5000 a month at beauty salons. "While some avail of services once in every week, some go for packages that cost anything between `5000 and `5500 per month," says Theertha.
Some opt for different salons for different treatments. "Since quality is as important as the cost, I go to different beauty salons that can offer me good service. While one parlour offers good service in hair colouring, another parlour may be the best for hair styling," says Priyanka Nair, a medical practitioner.
The younger lot, in addition to getting their hair smoothened once in six months (which starts from `12,000), also get their hair streaked once a month. "Each streak costs a little over `300. They go for seven to eight streaks, which comes to around `2500," says Theertha. She also informs that the trend is common among college students.
Rama, who runs a beauty salon, says that she gets to see her customers in her salon almost every other day in a month. "Women want to look their best all the time, and they are also ready to spend any amount for the desired look," she says.

Men not far behind

Surprisingly, it's not only women who hit the parlours frequently. Beauty salons have men too availing themselves of their services. However, the total amount is comparatively lesser than a woman's monthly expense. "We have many male customers coming in for hair spa, anti-dandruff treatment, clean-up, facial and haircut," says Sujith, adding that pedicure and chest and leg waxing are becoming popular, especially among male models. "They spent at least `1,500 to `2,000 per month," he says.

Keep your skin young. Here's how (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

We get an expert to assess his skin for its age. Here's how you can keep yours young

The human body does not consider the skin a vital organ like the heart, lungs and the brain. So when the body faces a crisis — such as dehydration, fatigue due to stress or lack of vitamins in the blood stream — the skin is the first to show symptoms, as its crisis always gets addressed last.

French skin expert Julien Moignard from Keraskin Esthetics was in Mumbai and analysed the skin of this correspondent. The test was done with an instrument equipped with a microscope. It measured lipid levels, hydration, wrinkle onset, skin sensitivity and pigmentation. Moignard, Dr Nina Madnani, consultant dermatologist Hinduja Hospital, and Laura D'souza, skin aesthetician, share secrets that can keep your skin looking young.

Lipids
Lipids are essentials oils — made of proteins, cholesterol and fatty acids — secreted by the pores. They are present in the uppermost layer of the skin and form a protective barrier which holds in moisture and keeps out dirt and impurities. Babies have high amounts of lipids in the skin. As you age, the lipid formation in the skin slows down.

My score: Although I rarely apply moisturiser — and use a face wash or a soap to clean my face, depending on what I can get hold of at that moment — I scored 04 on a scale of 01-06, indicating a healthy level of lipids. A score of 05 or 06 would have indicated oily skin and a score or 01 or 02 would mean dry skin.

Remedy: Julian says lipid secretion is the result of eating proteins such as fish, eggs, chicken, paneer and balanced amounts of good fats, such as cheese, yoghurt and nuts. Crash-dieting severely impacts lipid development, resulting in duller looking skin. Applying a moisturiser regularly protects the lipid glands.

Hydration
The amount of fluid in your skin is important for its health. The fluids don't come only from the quantity of water you drink during the day but also the amount of antioxidants you consume. The ability of the skin to repair and produce new cells depends a lot on hydration. Well-hydrated skin is able to produce fresh cells more efficiently. Lack of sleep interferes with hydration and cell renewal. Which is why, when you sleep well, people notice the glow immediately as your skin has been forming new cells.

My score: I drank the previous night and had slept for less than five hours. Moreover, before meeting Julian, I was sweating in the heat and had gone without having water for over four hours. This showed immediately on my skin and I scored a very low 01 on a scale of 01-06.

Remedy: In hot and humid weather of Mumbai, you must drink at least three litres of water in a day. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E boost cell repair and formation. Mangoes, papaya, kiwis and almonds are rich sources of Vitamin E. Oranges, strawberries, grapes and pomegranates are abundant in Vitamin C.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol as they are diuretic in nature, causing your body to lose water.

Wrinkles
Wrinkles are formed when the skin cells die faster than the body can replace them. Lack of hydration over sustained periods often leads to this condition. Indentation occurs where there is constant and repetitive movement of the facial muscles, such as the glabellar-frown lines between the eyebrows, crow feet at the corner of the eyes, forehead lines and nasal wrinkles. In those who do not wear sun glasses, and have a constant frown, these indentations become pronounced wrinkles. New evidence of wrinkles has been found in young people who do heavy weights in the gym and grimace during workouts.

My score: I am 29, with a young skin. I scored 01, which showed that I do not have wrinkles yet. However there are signs to indicate their onset because of my lifestyle.

Remedy: Hydrate your skin well, wear sunglasses when outside, avoid smoking and use anti-aging products under the guidance of your dermatologist.

Sensitivity
Blame your genes if you have a sensitive skin. Such skin suffers from an uncomfortable sensation when make-up, soap, cleansers, etc. come in contact with it. The sensation does not leave any visible marks, such as redness, but is unpleasant. A low score indicates low sensitivity, while a high score indicates high sensitivity to external factors.

My score: I scored 01, which means my skin is not sensitive.

Remedy: People with sensitive skin must use sunscreen while going out as protection against rashes and sun burns. Avoid using toners which contain alcohol as they can irritate the skin. Wear oil-free and hypoallergenic make-up. Don't apply cosmetics over broken skin. Use products specifically meant for sensitive skin.

Pigmentation
Human skin colours have been classified into six types. People under Type, like Caucasians, are very fair. Type Six people have extremely pigmented skin. Indians have a wide range of skin tones and fall between Type Three and Type Six. Type of skin tone defines your response to tanning and injuries such as burns, and proneness to skin cancer.

For instance, a Type Three will hardly tan even after staying out in the sun for hours. The reason is that this type produces very few melanocytes (melanin-producing cells which define the skin colour).

On the other hand, a Type Six will tan within 20 to 30 minutes of staying out in the sun, as that skin produces more melanocytes in reaction to the Sun's UV rays.

My score: I fall between Type Four and Six.

Remedy: People who fall under Type Three or below must wear protective skin gear such as long sleeves and sunscreen if staying outdoors for long. Type Four and above can wear protection to avoid tanning. However they need not worry much about tanning as it reverses within a few weeks.

Homemade face packs for the summer (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

The skin, due to exposure to the harsh sun becomes dry and dehydrated. Here are face packs that can be made at home...

Tomato and cream: Tomato juice and malai provides a cooling effect to the skin. Apply this with cotton. Tomato seeds can be retained in the pack.

Mango pack: Apply two tablespoons mango pulp, one tea spoon of sandalwood powder, one teaspoon of honey, one tablespoon of yogurt, and some turmeric powder on your face right after some time in the sun. This saves the skin from getting damaged.

Banana pack: Some banana pulp along with one tea spoon honey is also soothing for the skin.

Potato juice: Applying the juice of freshly grated potato helps remove tan and is healthy for the skin.

Multani mitti: This is as simple as it can get. Make a paste of it by mixing it with water and rinse off after applying it for 15 minutes.

Taking care of your lips is just as important as looking after the rest of your face

Most women spend loads of money on cosmetics for their face but their lips are often neglected. Other than a cursory swipe of lipstick or a touch of lipgloss, many women do not bother too much about taking care of or worrying too much about their lips. But it is important to remember that looking after the lips, can not only add to your beauty, but also enhance any colour you may add as makeup.

The most common problem among women in India is having lips in different colours and this could be mainly due to sun exposure. Home remedies range from applying milk, honey, milk cream or lemon on them, but all this will be ineffective if you do not use sunscreen everyday. This will at least prevent the further darkening of the lips. And though there are only a few whitening creams for the lips, the best way to begin is by protecting them from the sun.

The second method suggested by experts to look after your lips and help them look good is to avoid licking them. Whenever your lips dry up, use lip balm or some pure petroleum jelly to soften them, instead of drying them out further by smacking them with your saliva. Also, look for balms that contain oils like almond or shea butter instead of the medicated ones that might dry out your lips further.

Make sure you exfoliate your lips often. This can be done with a soft baby toothbrush or a regular scrub. Don't wear too many matte lipsticks that are also very drying. Always use a primer on your lips before applying lipstick.

The secret therefore for beautiful lips is learning to keep them soft and moist all the time. Only then, will the colours pop when you wear lipstick or and go a long way in making you look sizzling hot too.

Your guide to fixing hair disasters (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

Every woman yearns to have long, thick and shining hair with a healthy bounce! Yet, changing seasons and hectic lifestyles make it extremely hard to manage the tresses. Here's the trick to fixing tress troubles

If neglected, your hair may show signs of hair fall, split ends, dryness, dandruff, roughness and often hangs dull and lifeless. Here are simple ways you can help your tresses bounce back from some common hair disasters.

Dry hair:

-If you suffer from dry, lifeless looking hair, wash it 2-3 times a week with a mild hydrating shampoo. Herbal ingredients like Aloe Vera, vetiver oil and licorice hydrate and nourish the hair roots and also provide moisture to your hair and scalp
-While choosing a shampoo, always opt for a shampoo which is SLES free. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) which is commonly used in many shampoos is a foaming agent which may contain traces of impurities like 1,4- dioxane which may cause harmful effects when used for long time.
-Conditioning your hair is a must as tangled hair is a common problem. A good shine-enhancing conditioner smoothens out the hair, making it easily manageable. Look for extracts of Holy Basil and Amla in conditioners. These ingredients soothe, condition and replenish lost moisture, making your hair soft. Use only wide-toothed combs to detangle wet hair.
-Too much of ironing, blow drying, curling, and coloring can take away the life out of your locks. Avoid using hair styling products with alcohol which dry out hair, and avoid putting hair styling products directly on your scalp, as they clog the pores on your head. If you need to blow dry your hair, apply a leave-on conditioner prior to it.
-Oil massage and leaving it overnight once a week can be very helpful in keeping the hair in healthy state. Amla, Bhringaraja are ideal ingredients to look for.

Oily hair:

-Greasy hair can be quite a fashion disaster. Hot oil treatments once a week can be very helpful in keeping the hair revitalized. Amla, Bhringaraja are ideal for hair
-Use a protein shampoo to keep your hair to restore your hair to its healthy state. Chickpea, Wheatgerm and Amla are excellent ingredients to find in your shampoo. The formulation of these ingredients removes excess oiliness and nourishes hair roots
-Dry your hair completely before leaving the house.
-Avoid using styling products as it could make hair appear greasy due to increased product build up
-If dandruff is a concern, choose anti-dandruff shampoos with tea tree oil. Tea tree oil contains terpenoids which have been found to have antiseptic and antifungal properties.

Limp hair:
-Use a volumizing shampoo if your hair tends to go limp. A daily-use shampoo enriched with Chickpea, Amla, Black Myrobalan, Eclipta, Licorice provide natural protein nourishment to the hair, thereby nourishing the hair. It stimulates hair follicles thus promoting hair growth and also improves texture of the hair. This not only brings forth a rich, natural shine and soft texture to the hair, but also helps rejuvenate hair that is dull and damaged. These natural herbs will sooth the scalp, providing your hair with its daily dose of proteins, keeping it soft, lustrous and healthy
-Follow it up with a volume-enhancing conditioner to seal the moisture in your locks
-You can boost hair volume by tying your hair in loose braids or buns before you go to bed
-Applying a tiny amount of hair cream best suited for your hair type will not only benefit in hair growth but will also give volume to your mane. Opt for a hair cream with natural ingredients like wheat-germ and chickpea.

Hair cut and hair styling disaster
If you have cut your bangs too short, don't panic. Just brush back your hair and use a stylish clip to make it look chic. You can also turn a scarf into a headband. Even the flattest or fuzziest hair looks stylish when swept back with a scarf.

If your short hair has fallen flat, use a hair cream to massage your hair. A hair cream not only protects and nourishes the hair, but adds volume

A regular routine comprising of shampooing, conditioning and oil massage along with a well-balanced diet is the key to healthy and lustrous hair. Follow these simple tips and say goodbye to your mane woes. Taking good care of your hair makes all the difference.
Dos and don'ts for naturally glowing skin (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

The first signs of a beautiful skin are - soft, smooth and glowing. To get a flawless skin, here are a couple of skin care dos and don'ts to follow.

Dos

Wear makeup with the most natural ingredients possible. Mineral makeup provides flawless coverage while allowing your skin to breathe. Fewer ingredients often means the makeup's better for your skin.

Exfoliate regularly. Once a week works for most. If you have oily or combination skin, use a chemical exfoliator like glycolic or salicylic acid. Those with normal or sensitive skin will reap the greatest benefit with a microdermabrasion formula exfoliator -- the kind with little beads that scrub your face.

Use eye cream every day! The skin around your eyes is very thin and fragile. Protect it with an SPF 30 eye cream.

Eat and drink healthful foods. Great skin starts on the inside. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated, and ingest lots of antioxidants like those found in green tea and foods high in vitamins A, E, C and beta carotene. Antioxidants fight free radicals, which can cause cell damage. (Bonus: Antioxidants also help protect against cancers and heart disease!)

Follow a regimen regularly. Caring for your skin should be a twice-daily occurrence. Don't be slapdash about your regimen or follow it only sporadically and expect to see any lasting results.

Dont's

Smoking prematurely ages your skin at a rate second only to sun damage. Nicotine constricts the blood vessels, blocking the flow of oxygen to your skin.

Forget to wear sunscreen! Make your moisturizer do double duty and wear one with an SPF of at least 30, even in the winter, and even if you are only outdoors a few minutes a day.

Forget your neck, chest and hands. These areas age the fastest and are all but ignored in our skincare routines. Sunscreen, exfoliation and moisturization are just as important in these areas as they are on your face. Look for anti-aging ingredients like vitamin A, kinetin, copper and vitamin C.

Overdry your skin. Many women make the mistake of staging a full-scale drying assault on their entire faces when confronted with a pimple. This only makes the problem worse. When skin is stripped of all its natural oils, it produces even more sebum to make up for it. This substance is what clogs pores, causing pimples. A gentle cleanser and regular exfoliation is kind to your skin, yet effective enough for most women -- but do see your dermatologist if you feel you have an acne problem.

The right tooth paste and toothbrush
Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not irritate teeth or damage gums. One of the main things to look for in a toothbrush are its bristles. Most dentists recommend soft bristles, especially for those individuals who have sensitive teeth and gums. Both adults and children should use a toothbrush that has soft bristles. Toothbrushes with harder bristles are not more effective at removing plaque or stains.

Be sure to select a toothbrush head size that can easily fit into the mouth and is capable of brushing a row of teeth at a time. Think twice before you get inked

That's because tattoos may give rise to diseases, say doctors.

Sporting a tattoo has always been seen as something cool. The more complicated and mysterious it seems, the greater is its cool quotient. And imagination simply rules the designs one wants. For most, the desire to get inked permanently kicks in during teens and early adulthood. And the popularity of this art form is just growing bigger with the passage of time. However, doctors have now warned that tattoos can increase the risk of skin cancer.

Ink may contain toxic elements

The ink used for making tattoos might contain toxic elements, which can cause skin cancer. Especially the blue ink containing cobalt and aluminum, which is the age-old colour of choice for tattoo artists. Besides this, red ink may have mercurial sulfide and certain coloured inks often contain lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, titanium and other heavy metals, feel doctors.

Equipment

The equipment used in tattooing and body piercing, if contaminated with infected blood, can risk transmission of blood-borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C and various skin cancers like squamous cell, carcinoma and melanoma, cautions consultant plastic surgeon Dr DJS Tula.
Increased risk due to arsenic

Not everyone who gets a tattoo done gets skin cancer. However, they are at risk because most tattooists use ink that contains arsenic.

Damage to muscles

In the quest for sporting the most exotic looking tattoos, individuals don't take into consideration the damage tattoos cause to their skin. In fact, certain designs require deep penetration into the skin and can damage muscles in the bargain, adds Dr Tula.

Tattoo artists speak
Contrary to what was said, tattooists debunk skin and health risks like skin cancer or other blood-borne disease, associated with tattoos. As long as you take these precautions, you are safe, they say:
Go to a professional, reputed tattoo artist. A professional will use only organic inks. The best inks are imported from the US, Britain and Australia. Some unprofessional tattoo artists use Chinese inks which are available at cheap rates in the market and might be harmful.
After getting inked, aftercare procedures should also be followed properly to prevent getting infections on the inked skin.

Precautions to be taken
One should choose a hygienic place for a tattoo where needles are properly sterilised. Tattoos between the mid ribs and upper shoulders should be avoided, says dermatologist Jane Ruth.
Some of the other common skin risks associated with tattoos include allergic reactions to certain tattoo inks. However, infections that occur after getting a tattoo can be treated with the help of antibiotics.
Not just getting tattoos, but even tattoo removal poses skin risks. For example, hypo-pigmentation (loss of skin colour) and as hyper-pigmentation (skin darkening) on the area where the tattoo was.
