The Grauniad reports. Harriet Harman, the Labour deputy leader, is to be charged with crashing her car while using a mobile phone.

A CPS spokeswoman said Harman would be charged with driving without due care and attention and driving while using a handheld mobile telephone. A court summons will be served on the MP for Camberwell and Peckham.

It will be interesting to see if the full weight of the law is brought against this woman, she has endangered life and should be banned and fined the maximum penalty.

A record crash in tax receipts and spiralling public spending has left Britain heading for the largest budget deficit of any leading nation.

Figures yesterday revealed the Government borrowed £11.4billion in October - an astonishing 88 times the amount for the same month last year.

International watchdogs urged rapid spending cuts and tax rises as it emerged that revenue tumbled by an alarming 10 per cent in the first seven months of the fiscal year.

The dismal public finance figures took the total for the fiscal year so far to £86.9billion, equivalent to around £1,400 for every man, woman and child in Britain.

The shortfall was caused by a bigger than expected rise in public spending, which jumped 10 per cent to reach £48.6billion, combined with the slump in tax revenues.

The Government's accumulated national debt now stands at £829.7billion, equivalent to 59.2 per cent of gross domestic product, the highest peace-time level on record.

OECD warned there is a danger of further declines in house prices. And it said unemployment, which stands at 7.8 per cent now, or 2.46 million people, will rise to 9.3 per cent in 2010 and 9.5 per cent in 2011.

Business borrowing has plunged at its fastest rate since records began a decade ago.
In September, the amount handed out to firms struggling to survive the recession dropped 6 per cent, compared with the same month last year.

Experts say the dramatic fall is due to a combination of small firms not being given money by banks, and large firms deciding not to take up their credit facilities because they are shelving expansion plans.

Some of the world's poorest countries are to receive a cash injection of £1.5m from the UK government to help improve road safety.

Road accidents are now a bigger cause of death than malaria in developing countries, with one person dying on the roads every 30 seconds.

The funding will pay for pedestrian crossings and better road markings.

It was announced at the first ministerial global road safety summit, which was held in Moscow.

The cost of petrol in the UK has risen by 26% over the last year. Yep a whole 26% more or one quarter more than last year.

Petrol is expected to reach £1.10 a litre before Christmas, an astounding £5 a gallon. The blame is being laid on the increased cost of oil and the falling value of the pound (thank you Gordon).

You see the direct cause and effect there, if not I shall explain: the pound is worth less on the markets, due to our massive national debt, Gordon has the printing presses in Threadneedle Street running 24/7 printing cash to cover unlimited spending.

So in just one year this is the result and as our debt keeps rising by £6000 a second this will only get worse, don't expect HM Govt to cap prices as they lack the money to do so; well unless they print some more in order to do so and I think that may cause further problems down the road.

Now I hear someone say, we have our own oil, well yes we do and have to sell it for money in order to settle our debts.

Oh and if you voted for Labour, then in part this is your own fault.

An 80-year-old Dundee woman locked herself out of her flat. Nothing unusual, some of us have done that more than once I should think.

Margaret Andrews of Moncur Crescent had gone shopping on Strathmartine Road (less than a ten minute walk) and was on her way home when she discovered her keys were missing.

When a community nurse arrived for a scheduled visit she told Mrs Andrews to call police and two officers were sent round to help.

The police drove to Mrs Andrews' son's house at the bottom of Albert Street - a five minute trip from Moncur Crescent - to collect another set of keys and they were soon able to let Mrs Andrews back into her home.

But her ordeal wasn't over. "One of the bobbies said to me that I would get a bill, which I knew, but I didn't think it would be that much. I didn't want to worry about it so I've already paid it at the post office."

Dead soldiers name is misspelt on Elizabeth Cross

Another day and another MOD screw up.he mother of a soldier killed in Iraq was horrified to find that his name was spelt wrong on the Elizabeth Cross that she received.

An accompanying scroll signed by the Queen had the same error.

Lieutenant Richard Shearer, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, died in a roadside bomb attack four years ago, aged 26. Maureen Shearer opened the package on Friday to find that the medal and the document featured a non-existent middle initial “A”.

Mrs Shearer, a retired teacher, said: “I just couldn’t believe it. The least we deserve is to have his name spelt correctly.”

It was not the first time that the family had had to deal with a distressing error — the young soldier’s coffin was inscribed with the wrong date of birth when it was flown back from Iraq.

The incident follows the criticism at Gordon Brown for misspelling the name of Grenadier Guardsman Jamie Janes in a handwritten letter to his mother.

Mrs Shearer, a mother-of-two, said: “I’m extremely upset. Losing a son is devastating and I still think of Richard every single day. I opened the package on Friday and just couldn’t believe it when I saw they had got his name wrong.

“I can only think that it was a clerical error but when it comes to something as important as this then the details must be checked, double-checked and made 100 per cent accurate.
