Well folks, Feast Tofino has been going on for a while now but this weekend is the center piece of the whole thing. The Feast Tofino Dockside Festival on Saturday is always a good time and, as always, we'll be there broadcasting live from the fun, here's the poster, more details at www.feasttofino.com

Chesterman Beach Closed, Body Recovered From Frank Island

At 3:04pm May 21 Tofino RCMP distributed the following statement regarding the events that closed Chesterman Beach on May 20th. Our thoughts are with those who lost a loved one:

On May 20 at 1:00 AM RCMP received a call from an out of town person, that his 37 year old brother had left him a text message saying he was going to Chesterman Beach to take his own life. It was also reported that the brother may have a handgun in his possession. The brother’s car was found by police in a parking lot at the beach. RCMP closed off the beach and called in numerous resources from the Ucluelet RCMP, a Police Dog Handler, Emergency Response officers and an RCMP helicopter. Once daylight had arrived an extensive search of Frank Island was conducted. Unfortunately at 7:25 AM one deceased male and a handgun were found. RCMP advise there wasn’t a threat to the general public however contingency plans were put in place involving additional police resources, Search and Rescue and the Coast Guard should the search have taken longer. Next of Kin has been notified however no names will be released.

The following is the report we originally published on this blog on the afternoon of May 20th:

Details are still emerging about an incident that closed Tofino's Chesterman Beach this morning. No official statements have been issued at this time but the presence of BC Coroner's Service vehicles and the unhurried pace of paramedics on the scene indicate a fatality.

The beach was closed early this morning while search and rescue vehicles patrolled the region. There are unconfirmed reports (ie rumors) of a single gunshot heard early this morning in the area where the body was recovered, others claim a bloody sleeping bag and hand gun were found with the body.

A local RCMP officer said it's likely a press release will not be issued until tomorrow morning due to the holiday. At this time we have no reason to believe the deceased was a resident of the region or to suspect foul play.

Frank Island is located just off Chesterman Beach, a popular surfing beach in the region. At low tide you can walk out to Frank Island.

May Long Weekend 2013 in Tofino and Ucluelet

Thought we should probably post some of the events going on in the region this weekend since Victoria Day long weekend is sort of a big deal out here;

Stubbs Island: (or Clayoquot Island depending who you talk to)
Every May long weekend the folks who live on Stubbs Island open it to the public for free, to make it even better the transportation from Tofino's harbour is also free. The beautiful island is part garden, part untouched nature and it's a great family experience. Boats folks from Tofino's 1st street dock to the island from noon to 4pm and the last boat returning to Tofino leaves at 6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Feast Tofino Stuff:
There are a number of awesome culinary Feast Tofino events to take in over the weekend and all through the month of May. So many in fact that it's probably better if you just check the Feast Tofino website your self. www.feasttofino.com

Ucluelet Night Market:
Baked goods, crafts, snacks, live music and other goodies every Friday evening at Ucluelet's night market. This Friday's will be the first of the season so be sure to come check out the fresh additions to the market. Friday evenings starting at 5 on Ucluelet's Main Street down by the harbour.

Tofino Saturday Market:
Tofino's weekly market gets underway this weekend, too. Saturdays from 10am to 2pm in the Tofino Village Green

Live Music at Jack's Pub:
Jack's Pub in The Marina West Motel in Tofino has regular live music on the weekends all year around. All events start around 9 or 10 and there is no cover charge (19+)

This Friday and Saturday catch The Jilli Martini Band

On Sunday evening it's Sean Burns playing a solo set

and on Monday it's Jam night hosted by local rock band Ballistic Pig

Ukee Idol at Official's:
Official's Sports Lounge is hosting a massive multi-week karaoke contest and qualifying rounds take place on Monday nights. show your stuff or just take it all in. I promise the competition is better than this

Everything Else:
I probably don't have to mention it but whale watching, surfing, hiking, hot springs cove and kayaking are also pretty awesome!

I'm sure there is a lot more happening but this list will get you started. Of course the coolest thing to do this weekend in Tofino and Ucluelet is listening to Long Beach Radio, and for those you who do, thanks. -Geoff

A Feast of Fun OR Stuff You Should Be Planning Your Summer Around

I folks, there's a lot of stuff going on on the coast in the next little while and I thought it would be a good idea to mention some of it here.

First, starting May 1st it's Feast Tofino. It's all about the food (and the culture surrounding it) out here in Tofino and Ucluelet. From the fishermen, farmers and such that produce it through the kitchens that prepare it to the tables where we eat it and the people we eat it with.

For Bobby Lax and I on The Friday Funky Food Hour it's kind of like a month long Christmas! Expect a lot of talk about Feast all through May during Bobby's, on the blog and all over the place, including some on-location fun from the dock festival! There are still tickets available for many of the events and there are some great accommodation specials if you want to come check it out from abroad.

I should also note that after a short break in the first week of June we turn to The Tofino Food and Wine Festival for another weekend of indulgence... Grazing in The Gardens is NOT to be missed! (more on that as we get a little closer to the date but you might want to get tickets ASAP)

Also, Long Beach Radio is excited to lend a hand to promoting the new Otalith Music Festival scheduled for late August in Ucluelet (a little ways off but I'm so excited for it I had to post). Featuring a handful of local bands, some big regional bands and number of other assorted folk, bluegrass and indie-rock fun you should probably check out their website HERE and get onboard for the early-bird ticket rate. You'll be hearing A LOT of the Otalith lineup on Long Beach Radio this summer to get you ready for the show.

Speaking of early-bird savings you can still get early-bird tickets to The Ucluelet Salmon Ladder Derby on their website until the end of the month..

And speaking of tickets to fishing derbies....

I hear spots for Brendan Morrison's Saltwater Classic charity fishing derby are moving fast! Better get on it!

There's a lot more going on like surf competitions, great legion concerts, The Pacific Rim Arts Society's Summer Festival, Canada Day and more... this will get you started though I suspect.

Hi folks, sorry for the tardiness and limited-ness (if that's a word) of this post. We've been getting prepared for Feast, doing some spring cleaning in the studio and listening to a TON of new music to plug in as we prepare for another summer.

Just a "heads up" Cam Dennison says he's going to be popping in for afternoon shows a few times this week.

I'm gonna put the computer down and go sit in the sun for a few before the rain comes back.

Expected Service Interruptions in Ucluelet This Afternoon

I've got good news and bad news.... The good news is we're gonna be doing some work to improve the quality and reliability of our Ucluelet broadcast today... The bad news is it will very likely require a number of short service interruptions to our CIMMFM 99.5 signal this afternoon starting around 1:30.

Our web based player here on the website should still be available and the interruptions should be very short. Afterwards we are expecting improved audio quality, less "stuttering" due to network problems and an automated loop of local artists what will play when the signal might otherwise be interrupted (for example when there is a power outage at our studio but not at the broadcaster).

Thanks for you patience, I look forward to providing a better product to our important and well loved listeners in Ucluelet, Ittatsoo, Salmon Beach and Bamfield.

Pacific Rim Whale Festival 2013 Update #1

We're 3 days into Whale Festival and there are already a lot of great things to report. First off, congratulations to Remote Passages for their win in The Parade of Whales and Wonders. Tofino's Warren Rudd put this video together of the parade and Spout Ball Challenge, check it out;

We've also got the results from Chowder Chowdown. This year's judge's choice went to The Barkley Cafe; (most of these photos were poached from the PRWF Facebook Page)

In the people's choice category the honors went to Black Rock, followed by Wildside Grill and Long Beach Lodge

Also, The West Coast Photo Showdown was a blast Saturday night with Left at The junction, food, bevvies and great local photos... I forgot to write down the winners, I'll try to get that information up soon.

Spring Time Is Jingle Time

So here's the deal... I was sitting in front of my computer in my office at home and decided, as I waited for a file to transfer, to record a silly jingle for Long Beach Radio... then I made another, and another. They are all quite terrible, non-creative, one take things but they got me thinking.... Why don't I get someone with talent to do some. (Then I stuck mine on the air anyway)

So here's the deal, book Abbey Road, get to your computer, smartphone or other recording device and record a jingle for us, email it to geoff@longbeachradio.ca and I'll get it on the air in regular rotation at the top of the hour with all the other ones we get sent as well as my own.

Lyrics should be something like; "You're listening to Long Beach Radio, 99.5 in Ucluelet and 90.1 in Tofino" other than that it's up to you.

PS if you're from out of the region Ucluelet is pronounced You-Clue-Let.

Feast on Love

Hi folks, I've been a little neglectful with the blog lately. It's been surprising busy considering it's the "off season."

Before we get into that check out the www.feasttofino.com website because they have a great event tomorrow that will feature food, wine, beer, live music and burlesque called Feast on Love that you won't want to miss. At the time of this post there are still tickets available. I'm not sure if it's a draw but "yours truly" will be MCing the event alongside my lovely wife.

There will also be tarot readings at Feast on Love, we'll have a few on the radio tomorrow morning around 10.

Another thing that's kept me busy is judging the Tuff City Idol competition at Jack's Pub... Week three is tonight so if you're interested in some flamboyant karaoke entertainment get to the pub early. We'll have a recap of this week's action with Anna from Jack's around 9 tomorrow morning.

Finally, I've also been spending all my free time at a top secret studio location in Tofino enginerring and producing the new album for local band Mojave. It's been a fun process that we'll hopefully wrap up in a few days.

sigh Tofino Transmitter Down This Morning, Again

So, when I awoke this morning our Tofino transmitter was offline, again. We also appear to have network/ Internet issues in the studio... The webstream and Ucluelet signal (99.5fm) may be broadcasting but are likely to be interrupted frequently until we can address the issues. Sorry for all this. We've got our best team of monkeys on it.

Also, Tofino Bus says local school buses ARE RUNNING. Global reports that local schools are closed appear to be inaccurate.

Our Transmitter in Tofino seems to be offline. We are investigating and hope to deal with the problem soon. Meanwhile you can still listen at our Ucluelet signal of 99.5fm, online using the player to the right or by searching for us on the uStream App for iOS devices. Thanks for your patience.

5th Annual Hospice Radiothon Friday December 14th, 2012

Today Long Beach Radio hosts our 5th Annual Pacific Rim Hospice Society Fund Raising Radiothon. It's a day when we celebrate the good work of an essential local service, raise money and awareness for Hospice and for me, one of the most fulfilling work days of the year. It's also a chance for your charity to be rewarded with an amazing gift donated by a local business or individual (scroll down for a list of the items)

Black Rock Resort's Movember Photo Contest Winner!!

All Movember we held a Movember photo contest alongside Black Rock Resort. Well they annouced the winner on Facebook today. Congrats Jordan;

As you might have noticed they also raised $780 for Prostate Cancer research and asked me to send out a big "thumbs up" to Josh Brown who was a key player in getting staff and guest behind the Movember fun at Black Rock.

As far as Long Beach Radio's Movember team goes Kirk Unger (the same guy who provided our background photo AND a loyal online listener) lead our efforts.

High Likelihood Of Power Outage Today

I've been in contact with a local BC Hydro employee who says that a motor vehicle accident this morning on Highway for between Port Alberni and the junction has knocked a power line down.

In order to repair the pole BC Hydro will very likely have to shut off power to the west coast for up to 4 hours today some time around or after 4pm.

The shut off would be necessary to protect the workers if there is a risk of rain.

If we receive any other updates I will pass them along.
