Drone, Sensor Dominated Kill Zones Force Russians To Walk Weeks To Reach Front

The Ukrainian-imposed front area kill zone now extends as far back as 60 kilometers. This means that Russian attempts to move troops, ammunition and heavy weapons closer to where they are needed subjects them to the likelihood - if not certainty - that they will be attacked by drones and never reach their positions.

As a result, Russian troops may have to walk for days, even weeks, to reach their objective - and that is before they even begin to consider an assault. And since these soldiers must move individually or in small groups, they can rarely amass the scale to launch a real offensive. Which is why you may not be reading much about Russian offensives these days. JL

Russian troops are now spending weeks traveling on foot to reach their assigned positions. The reason is an expanding drone-enabled “kill zone” that reaches 60 kilometers into the rear. Ukrainian strikes against Russian logistics force Russian forces to rely on individual infiltration to move forward. This creates a serious problem for an army trying to advance. Russian infantry might eventually reach a trench on foot, but the heavy ammunition, fuel, food, and equipment needed to keep them fighting must still be moved through the same threatened area. This shifts the entire nature of an offensive. It is rarely an armored column smashing through a defensive line anymore; sometimes it is a single soldier spending weeks moving through tree lines because putting him inside a vehicle makes him too easy to find.
Imagine being assigned to the frontline, except driving there is no longer a reliable option. The roads are watched, supply vehicles are hunted, and armored transports become increasingly vulnerable the closer they move toward the fighting. According to a Ukrainian non-commissioned officer operating in the Huliaipole direction, some Russian troops are now spending weeks traveling on foot simply to reach their assigned positions.
The reason is an expanding drone-enabled “kill zone” that Ukrainian forces say can reach deep into the rear. While this 60-kilometer figure comes from a single sector and cannot be independently mapped across the entire frontline, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that the account fits the wider battlefield picture. Ukrainian strikes against Russian logistics are reaching deeper into the rear, forcing Russian forces to rely on individual infiltration, motorcycles, and light transport to keep moving forward.
This creates a serious problem for an army trying to advance. Russian infantry might eventually reach a trench on foot, but the heavy ammunition, fuel, food, and equipment needed to keep them fighting must still be moved through the same threatened rear area.
The Expanding Sensor Belt
A Ukrainian NCO described just how much the battlefield around Huliaipole has changed. Vehicles were once able to approach within roughly seven or eight kilometers of the frontline with relative safety. Now, drones, remote mining, artillery, and targeted strikes have pushed that danger zone dozens of kilometers behind the actual fighting.
This does not mean Ukraine controls an impenetrable 60-kilometer wall where every entering Russian vehicle is immediately destroyed. The reality is much messier. It is better understood as an enormous sensor belt where reconnaissance drones watch roads and tree lines, strike drones attack vehicles, artillery hits troop concentrations, and remote mining disrupts routes.
Russian forces can still move through this environment; the challenge is doing it without being detected and attacked. Because the deeper that threatened area becomes, the harder it is to move larger formations through it, Russia has responded by radically shrinking its physical footprint.

The Limit of the Motorcycle
One of the clearest signs of this adaptation is the motorcycle. Serhii Krainiak, commander of an unmanned ground vehicle company in Ukraine’s 5th Separate Assault Brigade, noted that intense pressure against logistics has pushed Russian forces toward more maneuverable transport.
It makes tactical sense: motorcycles are smaller than armored vehicles, faster than infantry on foot, and easier to disperse across a large area. Yet they come with obvious limitations. They offer zero armor protection and highly limited carrying capacity, meaning a motorcycle can move a soldier and his immediate gear, but it can never replace the trucks needed to sustain an entire formation.
Once drone coverage becomes dense enough, even the motorcycle loses its advantage, forcing the battlefield to atomize completely. Armored formations give way to light vehicles, light vehicles give way to motorcycles, and eventually, troops begin infiltrating in ones and twos because moving anything larger increases the risk of detection and attack. ISW reports that Russian forces around Huliaipole have increasingly shifted toward these individual infiltration missions, meaning soldiers can spend weeks traveling toward the frontline. It sounds bizarre until you look at the operational logic driving the dynamic.
The Logic of Air Interdiction
Underneath this trend is an old military concept: battlefield air interdiction. Traditionally, conventional aircraft would attack supply routes, bridges, depots, and reinforcements behind enemy positions. The goal was not necessarily to destroy the infantry sitting in the trenches, but to make those trenches harder to hold by choking off everything keeping them supplied.
Russia used similar operational logic effectively before taking Huliaipole. ISW assessed that Russian forces made faster gains in the area in late 2025 following a months-long battlefield air-interdiction campaign that degraded Ukrainian logistics. Foggy, rainy weather also helped the Russian advance, reducing the effectiveness of Ukrainian reconnaissance and strike drones and giving Russian troops more opportunities to accumulate forces with less exposure. By February 2026, ISW assessed that Russian forces had secured the town after roughly three months of fighting.

What Ukraine appears to be doing now follows similar operational logic in the opposite direction. Because Ukraine cannot simply dominate the air with conventional aircraft, it has built a distributed system using reconnaissance drones, FPVs, long-range strike assets, and precision artillery. One system finds movement, another attacks it, and the moment a depot or vehicle concentration is located farther back, something else is sent after it. The weapons are different, but the objective is familiar: weaken the frontline by attacking the network behind it.
An Army Still Needs Trucks
Infantry can respond to a dangerous road by getting out of a vehicle and walking through tree lines, but heavy logistics cannot adapt quite so easily. A soldier can move toward the frontline carrying what he can manage, but his unit cannot sustain combat indefinitely on whatever fits inside a backpack. Ammunition, food, water, heavy batteries, replacement drones, and medical supplies must still arrive.
The farther Russian supply vehicles are pushed into the rear, the more complicated the logistics chain becomes. A larger truck might drop supplies at a safer, distant point; smaller vehicles move part of that load farther forward; motorcycles or ATVs carry another portion; and eventually, individual soldiers handle the final leg manually.
Every transfer takes time and creates another temporary target that can be detected. Every additional leg requires another vehicle and another driver. Ukraine does not need to destroy every single truck moving toward Huliaipole to disrupt an offensive. If enough vehicles are forced farther back, the supply network becomes slower, more complicated, and far more expensive to operate — ultimately reducing what actually reaches the troops doing the fighting.
Why Huliaipole Still Matters
Despite this logistical friction, Russia has not abandoned the sector. ISW notes that Moscow continues to prioritize the Huliaipole direction, and a Ukrainian NCO reported that the Russian 5th Combined Arms Army constantly receives reinforcements and occasionally receives additional drone operators, including personnel from Russia’s elite Rubikon Center for Advanced Unmanned Systems.
This is an important reminder that Russia is not helpless in this drone war. Moscow is adapting to many of the same pressures Ukraine faces, with both armies trying to extend surveillance networks deeper into the other’s rear, target logistics, and hunt down drone operators.
The struggle extends beyond Huliaipole itself. ISW assesses that Russian operations here are intended to work alongside pressure around Orikhiv, allowing Russian forces to bypass Ukrainian defensive positions and eventually support a wider advance toward Zaporizhzhia City. Because Russian forces were still roughly 35 kilometers from Orikhiv when ISW assessed the axis, this remains a long-term operational objective rather than an imminent threat to the regional capital.
Russia has still made real gains. Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets reported that Russian forces had advanced roughly seven to eight kilometers — and up to 11 kilometers in some areas — north and west of Huliaipole since spring 2026. ISW described those gains as tactically significant, but said the rate of advance remains slow and could slow further as Moscow struggles to maintain offensive pressure west of Huliaipole while defending against Ukrainian counterattacks elsewhere.
The map reflects this deadlock. Ukraine’s General Staff reported 10 Russian attempts to advance around Hirke and Charivne on September 16, followed by another seven attacks over the next day around Vozdvyzhivka and Krynychne. Yet ISW recorded no confirmed Russian advances during operations between September 15 and 17. While Russia is still trying to move, it is currently failing to convert those assaults into verified territorial gains.
There is also a growing gap between Moscow’s claims and public evidence. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed on September 17 that its troops had seized Rozivka, northwest of Huliaipole. However, ISW noted the claim would place Russian forces at least 13 kilometers beyond their furthest confirmed advance, characterizing it as part of a broader pattern of Moscow announcing quick tactical successes where available evidence shows no enduring positions.
None of this proves that Ukraine’s drone kill zone is solely responsible for freezing the map; frontline movement depends on terrain, manpower, weather, ammunition, and command decisions. But pressure against Russian logistics is clearly a critical piece of the problem.
The Counter-Drone Arms Race
Ukraine is not the only side building these deep kill zones. Around Kostyantynivka, a Ukrainian intelligence officer reported that Russian forces have increased their use of Molniya fixed-wing drones, fiber-optic FPVs, and remote mining against Ukrainian logistics routes. Crucially, the officer noted that Russian drone crews are focusing heavily on identifying Ukrainian drone operators so that glide-bomb crews can strike their launch sites.
This gets at the core of the modern drone war: the most effective way to weaken a kill zone is to kill the people operating it. It has triggered a rapid, iterative arms race. Longer-range FPVs push operators farther back; electronic warfare prompts a shift to fiber-optic systems that are resistant to conventional radio-frequency jamming; interceptor drones are deployed specifically to hunt down reconnaissance platforms; and when trucks become too vulnerable, unmanned ground vehicles take over the supply runs. Neither side gets to keep an operational advantage for long.
Autumn Could Help Both Sides
The changing season will complicate this equation again. Commander Krainiak noted that worsening visibility during autumn and winter could give Russian armored vehicles fresh opportunities to move, as fog, rain, and low clouds heavily degrade drone reconnaissance. Russia previously benefited from these exact conditions around Huliaipole in late 2025.
But autumn weather cuts both ways. Another Ukrainian commander told ISW that the imminent loss of foliage could actually expand the kill zone, leaving Russian infiltration groups without trees and leaves to conceal their movements. Consequently, a foggy morning might give a heavy vehicle a chance to move, but a clear afternoon after the leaves have fallen will leave that same route completely exposed.
From a Frontline to a Front-Belt
Perhaps the most important takeaway from Huliaipole is that the word “frontline” itself is becoming increasingly incomplete. We still draw the war with narrow lines on a map — one color for Ukraine, another for Russia, moving a kilometer at a time.
But the actual combat environment stretches far beyond that line. A Russian vehicle can be stationed dozens of kilometers behind its infantry trenches and still face persistent Ukrainian drone surveillance and the threat of attack. The exact same reality applies to Ukrainian logistics facing Russian drones. Command posts are pushed deeper into the rear, supply depots are fractured into tiny nodes, and vehicles are forced to entirely avoid exposed roads.
What emerges is less a single frontline and more a broad belt of overlapping sensors, drones, artillery, and mines. This shifts the entire nature of an offensive. It is rarely an armored column smashing through a defensive line anymore; sometimes it is a single soldier spending weeks moving through tree lines because putting him inside a vehicle makes him too easy to find.
Ukraine’s kill zone has not stopped Russia from attacking, nor has it erased Moscow’s regional gains. But it has fundamentally altered the physical and operational cost of simply getting a soldier into the fight. Armored transports give way to lighter vehicles, light vehicles give way to motorcycles, and eventually, the motorcycles give way to boots. By the time those soldiers finally reach the trench, they have already spent weeks simply surviving the journey through the battlefield.

Ground Drones Have Rapidly Assumed A Leading Role In Ukraine's Offensives

Ground drones or robots or UGVs (uncrewed ground vehicles) have, in a matter of months, gone from an interesting technological experiment to become a leading element in Ukrainian operations, particularly on the offensive.

Initially identified as a supremely useful tool for logistics along the drone dominated front, they were quickly employed effectively for reconnaissance and then, not just in leading prior to infantry in attacks but being transported behind Russian lines to assault strong points. The Ukrainians are now talking openly about deploying as many as 50,000 of them by early next year. And just as Russia's casualty and recruitment problems worsen. JL

In Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi, the widescale employment of Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs) is transforming land combat. The emergence of a broad range of functions for UGVs, and their employment at scale, (signals) the rise of Robotic Ground Combat. UGVs are breaching Russian obstacles as part of the doctrinal approach of SOSRA – suppress, obscure, secure, reduce, assault – in combined arms offensives. A range of other functions conducted by UGVs during Operation Vivaldi include reconnaissance for humans and other UGVs; electronic warfare; deception operations and sowing confusion in close and deep fights; kinetic strike through exploding UGVs and using UGV-mounted grenade launchers and other weapons; mine laying and minefield clearance; logistic support; attacking Russian logistic resupply routes to fix or isolate enemy positions; flank security; and, casualty evacuation.
Eight years ago, I published this report about human-machine teaming with the Washington DC-based Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments. My report explored UGVs and proposed a strategy for their development within Western military forces. The main reason I wrote this was that I was concerned we were not leaning into the learning and development of autonomous systems in the ground environment. As I wrote back then:
By the middle of the 21st century, ground forces will employ tens of thousands of robots, and the decisions of human commanders will be shaped by artificial intelligence. Although the future is impossible to predict, trends in technology and warfare make this a near certainty. Military organisations must plan now for this new era of warfare. Governments must be prepared for the political, strategic, and ethical dimensions of this shift in the character of war.
Recent developments in Ukraine, such as Operation Vivaldi, has seen the widescale development and employment of Uncrewed Ground Vehicles (UGVs) and is transforming the character of land combat. Indeed, we might now describe the emergence of a broad range of functions for UGVs, and their employment at scale, as the rise of Robotic Ground Combat. This is land combat that features the massed integration of UGVs into combined arms manoeuvre, and their teaming with humans and traditional military hardware to undertake missions across the spectrum of land operations from reconnaissance to close combat to security to logistics.
What is occurring now in Ukraine represents the first Generation of Robotic Ground Combat. This article provides a short history into how this situation came about, the current state of the art in Robotic Ground Combat, the potential trajectory for subsequent generations of Robotic Ground Combat, and how Western military institutions might learn and adapt.
The Robotic Ground Combatant Cometh
A lot has changed since I wrote these words in 2018. And things have changed even faster than I anticipated.
The most profound shift since 2018 has been the wide-scale application of autonomous, semi-autonomous and remotely controlled systems in the war in Ukraine since February 2022. Although new UGVs emerged in the first two decades of the 21^st century, the large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has accelerated things. We are witnessing a Cambrian explosion in uncrewed systems in the air, on land and at sea.
In the past two years, developments in land uncrewed systems have expanded in scope and developments of new UGVs has increased in speed. There has been an expanded use of them as remote-controlled bombs by both sides (the Russians have used old tanks in this role), as well as in surveillance, mine laying, resupply and casualty evacuation.
Ukraine’s initial forays into battlefield land systems add up to a battle lab effect. It is another aspect of the larger adaptation battle which is taking place across multiple domains in and around Ukraine. Battlefield experimentation, some formal and much of it informal, over the past couple of years has provided insights into the applications of uncrewed ground combat systems, the variety of capabilities needed to make them feasible in the land environment such as power, sensors, propulsion, running gear and weapons, as well as how they might force changes to land tactics.
One prominent early experiment was the Battle of Lyptsi in December 2024. The Ukrainians attacked Russian positions near the village of Lyptsi, which is in Kharkiv oblast. The assault employed dozens of UGVs and FPV drones. The ground vehicles were tasked with several different missions, including surveillance, mine clearing and direct fire using machine guns. The UGVs were apparently supported throughout the activity by FPV drones. While this doesn’t make the attack fully autonomous – the vehicles need human operators – it is one of the more significant examples of drone combat in this war.
This combination of ground and aerial recon-attack capabilities means that the operation was in effect an air-land operation. But it was probably one that was very different to that envisioned by the architects of the Cold War era Air-Land Battle doctrine.
Small battles like those in Lyptsi, as well as logistics and casualty evacuation missions along the frontline in the past two years, has informed the deployment of successive models of UGVs for the Ukrainians (and Russians). But recently, another event has highlighted the role of UGVs in modern land combat and provided insights into how they are becoming an essential component of combined arms teams – and successful offensive ground operations.
Vivaldi: Four Seasons of Robotic Ground Combat

In September 2026, the Ukrainian armed forces officially revealed the ongoing campaign to push back Russian gains on the eastern front around Lyman, which it called Operation Vivaldi. In his updates about the operation, the commander of the 3^rd Corps described Russian units that “lost control and surrendered in groups, along with their officers, drone pilots, and artillerymen.”
The Russian units involved came from the 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies, including the 3rd, 144th and 67th Motor Rifle Divisions and the 11th Tank Brigade. Operation Vivaldi disrupted and probably stopped the Russian plans to conduct a wide encirclement of the Fortress Belt from the Lyman and Dobropillya directions. Vivaldi also liberated Ukrainian areas from Russian occupation, provided a morale boost for Ukrainians, and demonstrated that offensive manoeuvre is possible in eastern Ukraine. This dimension of the Ukrainian counteroffensive – the return of offensive manoeuvre – matters just as much as the Ukrainian territory liberated over the last couple of months. The 3rd Corps reorganised its command and control before the offensive began, and it used drones to execute deep operations by striking Russian fuel pipelines and supply depots in depth, while also employing uncrewed ground vehicles extensively to support the infantry, and deployed ground-based radio beacons to keep its drones flying through heavy GPS jamming.
President Zelenskyy has highlighted the role of UGVs being employed by Ukraine. “Replacing our soldiers with ground robotic systems whenever possible is a highly promising area at present,” he said, adding that this element made it possible to accomplish a great deal. Back in April, he ordered the supply of 50,000 UGVs to Ukraine’s military.
The 3rd Corps has released information on several important aspects of UGV integration into ground operations during Operation Vivaldi:
First, they described how 3rd Corps re-roled heavy bomber drones as motherships to carry UGVs to the flanks and into the rear of Russian positions to suppress enemy drones and drone operations centres as part of shaping for subsequent phases of battle.
Second, 3rd Corps released a synopsis of how it employed UGVs to support infantry operations as well as provide logistic support. This is an important video because it shows the integration of UGVs into modern combined arms operations – not totally replacing combined arms.
Third, a video about the employment of breaching UGVs and their integration into offensive operations was released by the 3rd Corps. Once again, UGVs are spreading their wings into additional missions but breaching Russian obstacles as part of the doctrinal approach of SOSRA – suppress, obscure, secure, reduce, assault – in combined arms offensive operations.
A range of other functions conducted by UGVs during Operation Vivaldi have filtered out through different sources. These missions include reconnaissance for humans and other UGVs; electronic warfare; deception operations and sowing confusion in the close and deep fights; kinetic strike through exploding UGVs and using UGV-mounted grenade launchers and other weapons; mine laying and minefield clearance; logistic support; attacking Russian logistic resupply routes to fix or isolate enemy positions; flank security; and, casualty evacuation.
Operation Vivaldi is a large, real-time experiment and proving ground for integration of UGVs into traditional land formations. New doctrines for the employment of UGVs, and the sharing of these new tactical and operational methods, are crucial to Ukraine liberating its territory. Every Western military should be watching these developments. Offensive operations are a central capability for military forces. The ability to conduct offensive operations is also a crucial element of any nation’s strategic deterrent.

Russia's September Losses More Than 50,000, 10 Times More Than Ukraine's

At the beginning of this year, the Ukrainian high command set a goal of inflicting 50,000 casualties a month on Russian forces.

After creeping ever closer over the course of the spring and summer even as casualties surpassed the Kremlin's ability to recruit new cannon fodder - above 40,000 for most of the year to date, then 43,000 in July and 46,000 in August - the Ukrainians reached their goal last month, when the September tally of dead and seriously wounded crossed the 50,000 mark. And that figure was ten times more than Ukrainian casualties for the same period. This does not mean that the war will necessarily end soon, but it demonstrates that Ukraine's implacably relentless ability to set goals and achieve them, while degrading the Russian's ability to wage war effectively. Russian casualties passed 50,000 in September, up to 28,000 of them killed, vastly more casualties than Ukraine in September. Ukraine’s losses over the same month came to 5,000. Russia’s July losses were 43,000 killed and wounded. In August, they were 46,000. To push forward, Russia keeps feeding troops into “kill zones.” These are stretches of ground saturated with armed drones, mines, and artillery fire. September’s toll lands on a recruitment system that was already falling short. Russian losses (had already) outrun new contracts in June and July, when monthly losses ran lower. Russia’s defense spending is expected to near $199 billion this year. That is about 40% above the plan the government set in late 2025.

Russia suffered vastly more casualties than Ukraine in September, a senior NATO military official told Bloomberg. Ukraine’s General Staff put the month’s Russian toll only slightly lower.
September’s toll lands on a recruitment system that was already falling short. Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) estimated that Russian losses outran new contracts in June and July, when monthly losses ran lower. In August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, citing military intelligence, warned that Russia is preparing a mass call-up after its parliamentary elections. That vote ended on 20 September.
Where the numbers come from

To push forward, Russia keeps feeding troops into “kill zones,” the official said. These are stretches of ground saturated with armed drones, mines, and artillery fire. Maksym, call sign Rumyn, is a deputy company commander in the 46th Airmobile Brigade’s drone battalion. In April, he said the zone once ran 3–5 km deep and is now several times larger.

Rising stakes for Moscow
Russia’s defense spending is expected to near $199 billion this year, Bloomberg reported, citing two sources close to the government. That is about 40% above the plan the government set in late 2025.
Russian President Vladimir Putin would struggle to wind down the invasion without a political cost, Martin Jäger said last week. He heads Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

As Prices Begin To Plummet, Is the AI Boom About To Start Peaking?

That annoying social science, history, is schooling tech again. There comes a point in the technology adoption cycle where prices start to plunge as newer, faster and, most of all, cheaper options become available. Mainframes to minis, chips, laptops, web servers, cell phones and now AI.

Demand may actually continue to rise, but prices fall fast, changing the utility function. The Chinese open weight models are charging 90% less than Anthropic and OpenAI, whose market share has dropped from 70% to 30%. And at those prices, how reliable is that 30%? Which means all that investment in massive data centers may become...ahem...inconvenient. This is not to say that AI demand will fall, in fact, possibly just the opposite. But the economics are going to evolve and that means the financial model is going to do so, too. JL

Implementing AI has been a brute-force approach: Big, fast and expensive GPUs from Nvidia crunch a trillion parameters using massive amounts of memory housed in gigawatt-gobbling data centers, all with brute-force pricing - like IBM mainframes of old. But be careful about extrapolating from today’s pricing. Like all new technologies, refinement is kicking in—as mainframes gave way to cheaper minicomputers, microprocessors, web servers and now AI architectures. AI token prices have been dropping but are set to plunge. OpenAI and Anthropic are charging a premium - $1 to $2 per million input tokens. Chinese open-weight models charge 6 to 12 cents, around 90% less. US AI labs have gone from 70% market share last year to 30% today. When AI models run on smartphones, memory size is reduced by 9 to 10 times., If prices drop 90%, demand must increase 900% just to stay flat. Will 2027 see peak data center?

I can tell you how the artificial-intelligence data-center boom will probably end, but I can’t tell you when. Be careful about extrapolating anything from today’s pricing. With AI, like all new technologies, the refinement stage is kicking in—just as mainframes gave way to cheaper minicomputers, microprocessors, web servers and now AI architectures. AI token prices have been dropping but are set to plunge faster than most anticipate. Tech growth is never a straight line.
Silicon Valley’s mantra for decades has been smaller, cheaper, faster, better. I asked venture capitalist Steve Jurvetson to translate that into numbers. “We often see a technology shift when the new approach is 10 times better. It can be 10 times more performant or 10 times cheaper, sometimes both.” He calls it the “factor of 10.”
And it’s happening. Last week, according to OpenRouter, OpenAI and Anthropic were charging a premium for some of their models—$1 to $2 per million input tokens. Comparable Chinese open-weight models like Z.ai’s GLM and Alibaba’s Qwen charged 6 to 12 cents, around 90% less—that factor of 10 inflection point. American AI labs have gone from 70% market share last year to 30% today. All are still growing. But prices matter.
AI architecture is evolving. Instead of a trillion parameters, efficient small language models might use 70 billion and run on an Apple Mac. These local models have no token costs beyond the cost of hardware and electricity.
But they must be less capable than the large language models, right? Not really. Stanford researchers show that a locally run small language model “can successfully answer 88.7% of single-turn chat and reasoning queries.” No question we’ll always have high-end models running in data centers. IBM still sells mainframes. But growth will happen elsewhere.
Where? Another Silicon Valley saying I’ve lived by: Intelligence moves out to the edge of the network. The real breakthrough will happen when robust AI models run on smartphones. It’s already starting. In September, California-based PrismML released a compressed version of the popular open-source Qwen3.8 27B AI model. The company got it down to under 6 gigabytes. That means it fits not only on PCs but also on high-end smartphones. The memory size is reduced by roughly 9 to 10 times. There’s that factor of 10.
Technology doesn’t stand still. Qualcomm recently announced a new Snapdragon neural processing unit, or NPU, for smartphones. Using what the company calls a “mixture-of-experts” model, it could run a 30 billion parameter AI model in 3 gigabytes of memory. According to the Deep View, the largest AI model on a phone has been four billion parameters on an Apple A20 Pro chip. Qualcomm provides a 7.5 times boost.
NPUs, like Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon and Google’s Tensor chips in its Pixel phones, are multiplying. Same for the latest Apple M- and A-series chips, engines that can run AI models locally on iPhones—maybe why Apple hasn’t joined the AI data-center spending delirium.
A Nvidia-backed startup, Reflection AI, claims it matches leading Chinese open-weight AI models with “3-4x less inference compute.” That’s it? Only 3 or 4 times? Wake me up when it’s 10 times. At the pace AI is moving, that could be year-end.
Agents are all the rage, from Meta’s Muse to xAI’s Grokbot. They run on virtual machines in data centers but raise all sorts of privacy concerns. Startup Perplexity recently teamed up with Nvidia to run agents on PCs. Zero token costs. And you own your data.
I often hear, that if tokens get cheaper, demand will go up. That’s Jevons Paradox. Sure, elasticity works. But if prices drop 90%, demand must increase 900% just to stay flat. Remember when internet demand grew while debt-laden Global Crossing spectacularly failed because prices dropped too fast? Historically, semiconductors got 30% cheaper every year. When prices dropped by more than 50%, disaster struck with fabrication plant closings and company failures.
Will 2027 see peak data center? Again, timing is dicey. Current demand is gangbusters, but spending is a game of chicken until multiple factor-of-10 improvements kick in and prices collapse. This could set off a cascade of data-center halts and debt defaults, even as token demand increases.
Yes, model training, drug discovery and winning prizes like the recently solved Navier-Stokes equations require hot chips in data centers. But chatbots and agents and other tasks may increasingly be handled on PCs and phones and smart glasses and whatever new gizmos Silicon Valley invents over the next decade. I’ve heard this called the “Great Migration.” Mr. Jurvetson’s factor of 10 is visible now, as it often is, but ignored. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens gradually, then suddenly.

Pro-Kremlin military bloggers have acknowledged Ukrainian forces made notable battlefield advances as a map by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows four breakthroughs along the front line in the eastern Donbas region.
The so-called Z-bloggers have admitted what the Kremlin cannot, namely Ukrainian advances east of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, two fortress belt cities whose capture are key to Vladimir Putin’s ambitions of taking Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region.

Despite battlefield realities, Putin continues to claim gains. Last week, he said that his forces had captured 500 square miles in September. This is a figure that the ISW described as bordering on "hallucinations," given its estimate of a Russian net loss of 30 square miles.

But Russian Telegram channels have admitted Ukraine had liberated settlements and made advances near Lyman, an area which has been the focus of Operation Vivaldi, a counteroffensive touted by Ukrainian Third Army Corps commander, Andriy Biletski.
"Operation Vivaldi significantly improved Ukraine’s positions north of Lyman, denying Russian forces the opportunity to cut the Kharkiv-Sloviansk and Izium-Sloviansk highways, which are critical to Ukrainian logistics," military analyst Giorgi Revishvili told Newsweek. He is a former senior adviser to the National Security Council of Georgia.

Where Has Ukraine Made Breakthroughs?
Russian military bloggers whose messaging is not controlled by the Kremlin have acknowledged that Ukraine had made advances east of Kramatorsk, as the ISW map shows.
These included liberating the settlement of Ozerne and making advances further south around Malynivka and Holubivka.

The two other major gains the Z-bloggers noted were advances in the fields east of Pyskunivka and into southern Minkivka.

"Russian milblogger claims that Ukrainian forces have crossed the Siverskyi Donets River are notable, as the river is a significant natural obstacle," the ISW said in its latest update on Thursday.
The Washington, D.C., think tank said that the Russian sources feared that Ukrainian counterattacks in the Slovyansk and Kramatorsk directions "may have cascading effects and implications for Russian efforts to seize the Fortress Belt."
It would mean that Russian troops gathering towards the cities would be difficult. Any push by Moscow towards Slovyansk may be "doomed" due to failure or high casualties if Russian forces cannot recapture forests south of the city of Lyman.

While Operation Vivaldi had significantly improved Ukraine’s positions north of Lyman and disrupted Russia’s efforts to establish a northern pincer around the Fortress Belt, Revishvili said that Putin is likely to continue with his attempt to seize the Donbas in full and pursue grinding advances into the cold months.

He said that Putin is betting on intensifying attacks on critical infrastructure and residential areas with combined missile and drone strikes, "could become a breaking point for Ukrainian society, freezing it into submission and compelling Kyiv to surrender."
On Thursday, a Russian strike on a bus in Kramatorsk killed at least 33 people and injured 22 according to Ukraine's emergency service (DSNS).
"Russia comes to the Ukrainian land with death. She hits our cities, kills our people and multiplies her crimes every day," Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin said.

Russia's AI, Cloud Services, Apps and Bot Attacks Shut Down By Ukraine Strikes

Russia's Yandex is the equivalent of Google, Amazon and Uber. It is that country's largest provider of tech services: internet, cloud, AI development, etc. Ukrainian drone and missile strikcs have now badly damaged or destroyed its primary data centers and AI training facilities.

The result is not just that Russian consumers are frustrated by the disruption - but so is the Russian military, which also depends on them. And, in a particularly helpful side effect for western democracy, Russian bot traffic aimed at the US midterm elections, European concerns about Russian threats (and ancillary interference like inflaming passions in northern Ireland over attempts to revive Orange Order parades) as well as spewing hate and division across the civilized world, has virtually disappeared. Russian bot traffic has dropped to 0.4% of the maximum number of HTTP requests recorded in the past two weeks. It initially dropped to 57% on Oct. 8, when Ukraine hit a Yandex data center. A second, bigger Yandex campus was then knocked offline. Yandex’s network traffic has dropped to 30% for Yandex Cloud and 63% for Yandex LLC, resulting in slower services or complete disruption for Russians, who cant use high-speed satellite internet, as Starlink does not work in Russia, while the new Rassvet system had a good number of its satellites fall back to earth after launch.
The big story out of the Ukraine War for 2026 has been Ukraine’s ability to strike oil infrastructure deep inside Russia. These are new capabilities that stem from the maturing of specialist divisions in the Ukrainian military like its 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems. With purpose-built fixed-wing drones like the AN-196 RS and FP-6—basically just exploding airplanes—Ukraine has spent this year turning up the volume on this war for Russia and the wider world through the power of blowing important things up.

But it’s not just oil. Today, a big chunk of Russia’s cloud and AI infrastructure has been blown up. Services are disrupted, or completely shut down.
Over the past few days, one of the focal points for Ukraine’s onslaught has been Yandex, a company the New York Times once called, “a version of Google, Amazon and Uber rolled into one.” As explained by Reuters, the third attack on Yandex, which occurred Sunday morning, was pretty devastating, “resulting in the complete shutdown of its data centre in the Vladimir region.”

Per Reuters, this comes within days of attacks on another data center facility in Kalugg, and one in Sasovo near Moscow, where it sounds like Yandex performs most of its training runs. (Reuters describes it as “where two ⁠of the three supercomputers used to develop the company’s AI model are housed.”)

If you take the Kyiv Post at its word, it sounds almost like a switch has been flipped, and a ton of important services are just off in much of Russia, along with Russian services across the wider world. Perhaps most notably, the Alice voice assistant—Yandex’s answer to Siri or Alexa—is reportedly down. That would mean users with Yandex’s Station line of smart speaker devices can’t interact with them properly.

The Kyiv Post says Yandex Music, and Telemost, its version of Google Meet, were also disabled at the time it was writing on Sunday.

And since Yandex’s data centers are also critical cloud infrastructure for other services, the tendrils of the outage are widely dispersed—again, according to the Kyiv Post. Yandex Compute Cloud, a provider of virtual machines, is one of the services experiencing what the Kyiv Post calls “extensive outages.”
Things get a bit darker if you dig into just how important Yandex Cloud is across Russia. Yandex offers, for instance, specialized cloud solutions for healthcare. It also provides at least some of the cloud storage used, in theory, to safeguard Russian citizen’s private data for government use.
And, much like the attacks you may remember from earlier this year, in which it struck distribution centers belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s answer to Amazon, these attacks are creating chaos for consumers. The Kyiv Post writes that users have complained on Sunday about banking and rideshare app failures. Apps for major retail companies like the food sales colossus Magnit, and Fix Price, which is a little like Dollar General, are also apparently being interrupted.

The world is getting a break from Russian bots thanks to Kyiv.

Russian bot traffic has dropped dramatically in the past few days after Ukraine knocked out Yandex’s biggest data centers, with a third attack happening last night. Cloudflare reports that bot traffic from the Yandex network has dropped to just 0.4% of the maximum number of HTTP requests recorded in the past two weeks. It initially dropped to around 57% on Oct. 8, which happened when Ukraine hit a Yandex data center housing two supercomputers in Sasovo, Russia, located around 195 miles to the southeast of the Kremlin. A second, bigger Yandex campus in Kaluga, about 220 miles to the west of Sasovo, was knocked offline yesterday.

These attacks are apparently Ukraine’s response to Moscow’s strikes on its own data centers, some of which resulted in the outage of some of the most popular piracy websites.

Yandex is Russia’s equivalent to Google, and its Yandex Cloud service status reports that at least 84 services are currently offline. Global internet monitoring firm NetBlocks said that Yandex’s network traffic has dropped to just 30% for Yandex Cloud and 63% for Yandex LLC, most likely resulting in slower internet services or complete disruption for the average Russian. Unfortunately, the ordinary Russian wouldn’t be able to use high-speed satellite internet as a backup, as Starlink does not work in Russia, while the competing Rassvet constellation has had a good number of its existing satellites fall back to the surface after launch.

The hostilities, which have dragged on for years, saw the introduction of new technologies and strategies, specifically in drone warfare. It began with the wide deployment of commercially available drones on the front lines, typically for reconnaissance, dropping explosives, and kamikaze-style attacks. However, it has since evolved into long-range warfare, with specially built drones able to reach distances of over 1,500 miles and destroy Tu-95 strategic bombers situated well behind the front lines.
The drone strikes on data centers are relatively new developments. While data centers on bases are often considered valid targets, Russia’s justification for the attacks on civilian data centers was that Ukrainian military intelligence used them. This isn’t the first time that civilian data centers have also been hit by drones and missiles. AWS sites in Bahrain and the UAE have been hit multiple times since Washington started its bombing campaign against Iran, with the company telling its clients to move their data to sites outside the region, as it doesn’t have a recovery timeline.

Operation Vivaldi Victory Combined Power of Silence, Delusion, Robots

Among the more fascinating - and instructive - lessons from Operation Vivaldi so far, is the fact that it demonstrated the Ukrainians ability to combine hard-won experience with innovative experiments.

First, Ukraine learned from the failed 2024 counteroffensive and imposed strict operational security: no one was really aware of Vivaldi until four months after it started. This helped first in giving Ukraine's 3rd Corps time to adapt and take advantage of Russia's exposed flanks towards Lyman. But it also played on Russian officers' tendency to lie to their superiors, especially when they are in trouble, which then allowed Ukraine to take further advantage of the Russians' confusion about real conditions and perception that reinforcements weren't needed. The Ukrainians then built on this experiential wisdom by using drones, robots and up-armored vehicles with hardened infantry to exploit the opportunity. The results of this are now clear. JL

By the time Ukraine's 3rd Corps announced Operation Vivaldi in late September, it had liberated 176 sq. km. of occupied land. By pushing them back across the Zherebets River, the 3rd Corps eliminated 18 months of Russian progress. Which comes down to an age-old truism: every rapid advance risks turning into defeat if the attacker overextends, exposing their flanks to counter-attack. The 3rd Corps understood that it needed to do so quietly because Russian commanders lie to their superiors: a Russian officer won’t admit his unit is losing ground. By not posting evidence of wins, the Russians claim all was well, so no need for Moscow to send reinforcements. (Plus) robots can lead. “Drones, robots and motivated infantry, that’s what the first season of Vivaldi sounds like” The Ukrainians found weaknesses and attacked, first with drones, then with infantry and armor. All in secret. Four months later, the Russians were in retreat. And Vivaldi hasn’t finished.
In May, under a veil of secrecy, the 3rd Ukrainian Army Corps counter-attacked in northern Donetsk Oblast, the focal point of the most intensive fighting in the blood-soaked Donbas region.
Exploiting weak points along the flanks of a pair of Russian field armies, which were advancing around the town of Lyman toward Sloviansk, the Ukrainian force under Brig. Gen. Andriy Biletsky marched through the village of Nove. Then it pushed south, cutting behind the Russian 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies (each tens of thousands strong, at least on paper), so compelling them to retreat rather than risk encirclement.
By the time the 3rd Army Corps officially announced Operation Vivaldi in late September, its troops had liberated at least 176 sq. km. (68 sq. miles) of occupied land. And it was especially important territory.
By pushing the CAAs back across the Zherebets River, the 3rd Army Corps eliminated 18 months of Russian progress toward Sloviansk, one of the key fortress cities in the Donbas. In the worst case, the city’s defenders now have more time to prepare for the coming siege.
It didn’t happen quickly or easily. That it happened at all comes down to the 3rd Army Corps’ nearly airtight operational security, its aggressive adoption of aerial and ground robots for practically all conceivable roles, and an age-old truism of ground warfare: every rapid advance risks turning into defeat if the attacker overextends and exposes their flanks to counter-attack.
1. Secrecy still matters. While messaging is important in a war where national morale is a strategic resource, Biletsky and the 3rd Army Corps understood that if it was to succeed, it needed to develop quietly.
The reason is rooted in the tendency for face-saving Russian commanders to lie to their superiors about the real disposition of their forces on the battlefield. As a rule, a Russian colonel won’t admit his battalion is losing ground unless there’s undeniable public evidence his battalion is losing ground.
If the 3rd Army Corps could avoid providing that evidence, by not posting the customary lavish video montages of tactical wins, its leaders knew it would help the Russian commanders plausibly claim all was well, and that there was no need for Moscow to send more air support or reinforcements.
And the strategy worked. While a few videos leaked of Ukrainian advances across the Lyman salient, enough for the most attentive open-source intelligence analysts to conclude something big was happening east of Sloviansk, the mainstream media never caught on. And the Russians never made a serious effort to reinforce the combined arms armies.
By the time the 3rd Army Corps announced its counteroffensive, four months after it began, it was too late for the senior Russian command to do anything about it.

2. Robots can lead. The manpower-starved Ukrainian armed forces are adopting robots at a breakneck pace. And the 3rd Army Corps is doing it even faster. “Drones, robots and motivated infantry, that’s what the first season of Vivaldi sounds like,” Biletsky said.
To preserve its infantry and combat engineers for the close combat role for which they’re indispensable, the corps deployed robots first. And under the blanket of explosive aerial drones, it rolled out some novel unmanned capabilities.
Mine-clearing ground robots raked up dense Russian minefields, and old BTR-60 armored personnel carriers, fitted with remote control and packed with dozens of anti-tank mines, sped across the disputed gray zone and blasted apart Russian fortifications.
Under cover of darkness, Vampire heavy bomber drones airlifted small-wheeled ground robots, each rigged to explode on command, alongside Russian positions. Like inexpensive precision bombs, the robots were driven into enemy bunkers and detonated.
In terms of human soldiers, the Russian CAAs almost certainly outnumbered the 3rd Army Corps, probably by a lot. But the Ukrainian force more than made up for this shortfall with robots, lots and lots of robots.
3. Breakthroughs give, and they take. The reason the Russians were vulnerable to counter-attack is that they’d achieved a breakthrough in the direction of Sloviansk. But in more than a year of attacks, they had advanced too far, too fast, extending a 100 sq. km salient toward the city.
This bulge in the otherwise straight front line threatened to deposit Russian troops on Sloviansk’s doorstep, which in the worst period was just a few miles west of the salient. The bulge was a danger to Ukraine, but also an opportunity. By elongating their flanks, the Russians practically invited the Ukrainians to probe for weakness in their defenses.
The Ukrainians found these weaknesses around Nove and attacked, first with drones and then with infantry and armored vehicles. All under a veil of secrecy. Four months later, the Russians were in retreat, and the Ukrainians could claim a rare decisive victory in the war. And one last thing: Vivaldi hasn’t finished yet.

AI Chip Demand Pushes Samsung To All-Time Quarterly Profit

Operating profit for the three months ended September likely surged nearly ninefold from a year earlier to 107.4 trillion won, equivalent to $80.18 billion, the company said.
The feat would make Samsung the first South Korean company to top 100 trillion won in quarterly operating profit. Samsung said it was the first major global technology company to cross the mark.
The projected figure surpassed Samsung’s previous record of about 89 trillion won set in the second quarter and largely met market expectations for the third quarter.
Quarterly revenue was also expected to hit a record, with the company projecting a more than doubling of the top line to 195 trillion won. Analysts’ estimates were for 206.810 trillion won, according to a FactSet-compiled consensus.
The company doesn’t typically provide segment breakdowns for preliminary results, but most analysts expect its semiconductor division to have driven strong quarterly earnings, offsetting weakness in home appliances, mobile devices and other nonchip businesses.
The memory boom is a double-edged sword for Samsung: Higher chip prices benefit its semiconductor business but squeeze margins in other electronics businesses by raising component costs.
The South Korean tech titan, like many other local exporters whose overseas earnings are converted into won, is also exposed to foreign-exchange volatility.
Analysts at Nomura said Samsung’s operating profit would have been even higher without the won’s sharp appreciation against the dollar. Nomura estimates a 10% won gain could reduce Korean chip makers’ profits by 12%. The won has strengthened about 12% against the dollar over the past three months, FactSet data showed.
Samsung has said it expects memory-chip shortages to worsen in 2027 and persist into 2028. KB Securities analysts led by Jeff Kim said Samsung’s rapid shift to high-bandwidth memory, a specialized type of advanced memory needed for AI chips, could squeeze supplies of general-purpose memory chips. They expect the company’s most advanced HBM4 products to account for about 80% of Samsung’s revenue next year, up from 40% this year.
As profit surges, investors are turning their attention to Samsung’s shareholder-return policy. The company has already approved 30 trillion won in third-quarter dividends and a 15 trillion won share buyback for employee compensation, with further details on shareholder returns to come. Samsung estimates its 2026 shareholder returns at 90 trillion won to 110 trillion won.

Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi, the commander of Ukraine's Third Army Corps, made a highly unusual disclosure late last month, revealing that his forces had become the "first in the world" to air-drop ground robots from drones in combat.
Heavy bomber drones had carried the armed robots roughly six miles deep into Russian territory and dropped them there as part of Operation Vivaldi, an assault that is still unfolding in eastern Ukraine and has already seen Kyiv reclaim large swaths of territory from Moscow.
The tactic is called "Gryphon" and is named after a soldier who went missing in action near Andriivka, said Mykola Zinkevych, commander of NC13, the world's first strike uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) unit. Rather than driving explosive-laden robots across the front line, heavy drones dropped the bots in the Russian rear, creating an unexpected new direction of attack.

NC13, a unit within the Third Assault Brigade of the Third Army Corps, has played a leading role in Operation Vivaldi. Zinkevych, who goes by the call sign "Makar," spoke to Business Insider through a translator this week to discuss his unit's participation.
Traditional airborne assaults have been very rare in this conflict as dense air-defense networks threaten air operations.

Operation Vivaldi, however, has demonstrated the potential for entirely uncrewed airborne assaults. Rather than risking helicopters, transport aircraft, or paratroopers, drones can drop robots behind enemy lines, and Ukraine's booming defense industry is working on solutions to advance this concept, as are military units.
Brave1, Ukraine's state-backed innovation platform, said several days after the Third Army Corps' airborne assault reveal that another combat unit, the "Alter Ego" robot battalion of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, had developed and deployed similar technology.

The unit engineered a specialized robot called "Desantnyk," as well as a mechanism that allows its heavy bomber drones to carry and drop the robot deep behind the front lines. It has already been used to attack Russian positions, Brave1 said, adding that the entire process, from initial concept to combat deployment, took just 10 days.

Without an off-the-shelf robot on the market that bomber drones could readily carry and drop, especially at long ranges, the Alter Ego unit could only develop one itself, a Brave1 representative told Business Insider, relaying information from the unit.
"This is an asymmetrical solution that the enemy does not expect — delivering mobility and the capability to conduct operations far behind enemy lines," the representative said.
From the robot's combat experience, Alter Ego now understands that the UGVs must balance mobility, range, and payload, while also maintaining resilient communications with operators. Brave1 said it helped the unit find a manufacturer so they could turn the prototype into serial production.

Other Ukrainian defense companies, likewise, see value in these systems.
Volodymyr Zinovskyi, the CEO of the Ukrainian defense firm TAF Industries, told Business Insider in London recently that his company has developed both robots and heavy bomber drones and could easily combine the two for a mission.
The concept of using robotic systems to carry each other into battle is not necessarily new. Earlier this year, for instance, Business Insider reported that a Ukrainian defense manufacturer said soldiers surprised them by dropping one of its robots from a drone.

And motherships have become increasingly popular. Ukrainian firms have engineered new ways to launch drones from autonomous platforms, such as uncrewed boats and ground robots, significantly increasing their operational range.
Using drones to air-drop robots into battle — a tactic Brave1 said is unique to Ukraine and that only a few units are able to pull off right now — is Kyiv's latest homemade mothership concept.
The development comes amid broader efforts by Ukraine to replace soldiers with robotic systems for dangerous front-line missions, especially logistics runs and casualty evacuation.

"During assault operations, ahead of the infantry, UAVs and loitering munitions always go first," Biletskyi, the Third Army Corps commander, said on September 20 while sharing Operation Vivaldi details on social media.
Ukrainian defense companies and soldiers told Business Insider that mothership ideas like air-dropped robots — combining technologies in creative and effective ways — underscore the direction that war is headed.
Zinovskyi, the TAF Industries CEO, said that defense companies were previously focused primarily on producing drones. The next challenge is systems integration, where mixed systems work together to complete missions.

Zinkevych, the NC13 commander, said that he's pleased to see multiple firms developing bomber drones capable of carrying UGVs and described these efforts as a key example of industry scaling a system that has already proven effective on the battlefield.

Midterm-Threatened Republicans Turn On Trump Over Putin Diesel Sell-Out

Trump's announcement of a deal to buy diesel oil - the price of which has skyrocketed in the US, largely due to the stalemated Iran war - already appears to be failing economically and politically.

A number of Republican politicians, facing a serious midterm election threat from Democrats wasted no time in coming out publicly against the deal, primarily because the Russian invasion is not viewed sympathetically by a majority of Americans. In addition, economists and business executives are saying that the deal will not reduce the price of diesel at the pump for Americans, making the entire exercise, which Trump evidently believed would benefit his party in the midterms, another policy mistake. On Friday, the US president announced a deal to buy 300,000 tons of fuel from Moscow in an attempt to bring down fuel prices in the US, which have soared since the Iran war.

The deal prompted a furious response from Volodymyr Zelensky, who described it as a "gift to Putin". European leaders have also rowed behind the Ukrainian president.
'American energy is the answer'
Dan Sullivan, the Alaskan senator who is fighting a key battleground for the midterms, said he disagreed with Mr Trump's deal.
Nate Adams, Mr Sullivan's spokesman, said that the senator "believes American energy dominance is the answer to high prices, and that means producing more of it in Alaska, for Alaskans, by Alaskans, not importing it from Russia".
When asked whether he agreed with Mr Trump's decision, Mike Rogers, Michigan's Republican nominee for the Senate, said: "No, not in importing it from Russia. I've actually called for a temporary export ban just to try to give some relief while farmers are out harvesting."

Meanwhile, Don Bacon, who represents Nebraska but is not running for re-election, said: "It's a grave error by the president.
"People realise that the sanctions on Russia are appropriate when Russia's invading a country and bombing cities at night."

Mr Trump allegedly made the deal with Putin after he warned Mr Zelensky to stop firing long-range missiles and drones at Russian refineries.
The US president has reportedly threatened to cut off US intelligence-sharing to Ukraine if Mr Zelensky does not stop the strikes.
Responding to two drone attacks on Moscow's oil refineries after the US president's warnings, Mr Trump said: "[Mr Zelensky] better damn well stop. I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal."
Strikes on Russian refineries have exacerbated global energy prices, which have soared because of Mr Trump's war on Iran.
The rising cost of living has left Mr Trump under increasing pressure during the midterms.
Announcing his deal, he said Putin would "immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and global marketplace", followed by another 1.5 million tons before the end of the year.
"Diesel prices for Americans and, indeed, the world, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!" Mr Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Experts, however, said the deal would have little effect on US prices at the pump.
The deal follows talks between Russian and US officials, including Jared Kushner, that reports suggest ended with an agreement for the US to take a cut in future gas exports to Europe from Russia when the war ends.
The diesel decision has prompted criticism more widely. Andy Burnham reiterated his "complete solidarity" with Ukraine in a call with Mr Zelensky on Friday. The pair are due to meet this week.

Operation Vivaldi's Scope Widens As Ukraine Continues Pushing Russians Back

A growing number of experts are pointing to new evidence that the Ukrainian forces, operating again under strict news blackout security, are extending and expanding their counteroffensive operations. The where and how are less significant than the fact of the new momentum. JL

Ukrainian troops are operating across the Siverskyi Donets river while pressing toward Kryva Luka. The river is a significant natural obstacle. If those reports are accurate and Ukraine can maintain positions on the opposite bank, Russia loses the protection that obstacle provides. It also gives Ukrainian forces additional angles from which to pressure Russian positions south of the river. Kryva Luka adds another complication because the settlement sits near tactically useful high ground. Russia may have to spend more resources simply stabilizing ground it already holds. A counteroffensive doesn’t have to recover enormous amounts of territory to change a campaign.
A few weeks ago, Operation Vivaldi looked like a Ukrainian counteroffensive centered on Lyman. It may be getting harder to describe it that way now.
Russian military bloggers are reporting Ukrainian advances farther south, east of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, including movement toward Kryva Luka and operations across the Siverskyi Donets River. We’ve actually been watching this area for a while.
When we first looked at Operation Vivaldi, the important question wasn’t simply how much territory Ukraine had retaken around Lyman. It was what Russia could no longer do because it had lost that ground.
Vivaldi Was Never Just About Lyman
Ukraine spent months quietly attacking the Russian salient around Lyman before Operation Vivaldi was publicly revealed. By late September, Ukrainian officials said the operation had regained 176 square kilometers of territory.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian forces had planned to break toward the rear of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk area, but that Ukraine’s counteroffensive disrupted the plan and forced Russia to reinforce the sector. Those figures and battlefield effects remain Ukrainian claims, although Russian sources have separately acknowledged serious setbacks around Lyman.
The larger point is that Lyman itself was never Russia’s final objective. Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka form the core of Ukraine’s remaining defensive network in northern Donetsk Oblast. Russia’s position around Lyman offered one possible route toward that system from the north and northeast.
Operation Vivaldi pushed that route backwards.
We Were Already Watching This Area
Even before the latest reports, Ukrainian pressure was appearing around Ozerne, Pyskunivka and Kryva Luka.
The battlefield there has never been particularly clean. Russian forces frequently use small infiltration groups, which makes it difficult to translate every reported presence into firm territorial control. Ukrainian counterattacks can create the same problem in reverse, with troops entering an area before either side clearly controls the entire settlement.
That means a claim that a village has been “taken” needs to be treated carefully.
Russian Sources Are Acknowledging Ukrainian Movement
ISW’s latest assessment collected several Russian reports describing Ukrainian advances east of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
Russian military bloggers reportedly acknowledge Ukrainian forces retaking Ozerne, pushing Russian troops from Pyskunivka and advancing toward Kryva Luka. Other Russian sources have reported Ukrainian movement farther south around the approaches east of Kramatorsk.
Ukraine has not publicly announced that entire group of settlements as liberated, and some positions likely remain contested. This is not a clean breakthrough with a neat frontline suddenly moving east. It looks more like a series of counterattacks making it increasingly difficult for Russian forces to stabilize the ground they need for further operations toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
The Siverskyi Donets Could Matter More Than Any Village
One of the more interesting claims concerns the Siverskyi Donets River. Russian sources say Ukrainian troops are operating across the river while pressing toward Kryva Luka, and ISW has highlighted those reports because the river is a significant natural obstacle.
If those reports are accurate and Ukraine can maintain positions on the opposite bank, Russia loses some of the protection that obstacle provides. It could also give Ukrainian forces additional angles from which to pressure Russian positions south of the river.
Kryva Luka adds another complication because the settlement sits near tactically useful high ground. That does not mean Ukraine has secured a major bridgehead or is preparing a large offensive from there. We simply don’t know that yet.
Why This Feels Familiar
Operation Vivaldi did not begin with a dramatic armored breakthrough. Ukraine spent months shaping the battlefield before the territorial gains became obvious.
Russian logistics were pressured, reconnaissance drones tracked movement, strike drones and artillery attacked exposed positions, and unmanned ground vehicles increasingly handled dangerous resupply work. By the time Ukraine publicly acknowledged Vivaldi, much of that preparation had already taken place.

There are similarities in what we are seeing farther south now, but that’s as far as I would take the comparison. Ukraine hasn’t announced Vivaldi 2.0. ISW hasn’t described this as another formal Vivaldi operation, and we don’t know whether the current counterattacks are part of one larger plan or several local actions exploiting Russian weaknesses.
Russia Still Needs This Ground
Russia has not abandoned its effort to move west in northern Donetsk Oblast. It continues deploying troops, specialized units and drone formations into the wider Sloviansk-Kramatorsk direction while using small infiltration groups to probe Ukrainian positions.
Ukraine, meanwhile, is contesting some of the ground Russia would prefer to use as a starting point for later attacks. If that forces Moscow to commit troops and equipment simply to stabilize those areas, the effect could extend well beyond a few villages changing hands.
The Bigger Question Is What Russia Loses
This was one of the most important lessons from Vivaldi. A counteroffensive doesn’t have to recover enormous amounts of territory to change a campaign.
Before Ukraine’s Lyman operation, Russia held positions that could support additional pressure toward the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk defensive system. Ukraine pushed much of that salient back. Now Ukrainian pressure is being reported along another approach to the same cities.
If those gains hold, Russia may have to spend more resources simply stabilizing ground before it can think about moving farther west. That shifts the question away from how many square kilometers Ukraine has gained.
The more important question is what those gains prevent Russia from doing next.
Why Sloviansk and Kramatorsk Matter
Russia has spent years trying to capture the remainder of Donetsk Oblast. Sloviansk and Kramatorsk sit near the center of what Ukraine still controls there, connected to Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka through a wider defensive and logistical network.
Russia would need to break apart that system if it wants to seize the rest of the region by force. That’s why fighting some distance away from the cities can matter so much. Lyman offered one approach, while the current fighting east of Sloviansk affects another.
This Is Still a Limited Counterattack
There is no evidence right now that Ukraine has begun a massive offensive across northern Donetsk.
Some of the newest territorial claims still come from Russian military bloggers rather than Ukrainian announcements or independently confirmed mapping, and Ukraine continues dealing with manpower pressure across other sectors of the front.
Russia is also still attacking. Its bombardment of Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and the wider defensive belt has not stopped, and fighting continues across neighboring sectors.
So this isn’t the beginning of a Ukrainian drive across the Donbas, at least not based on anything we can establish right now. The more realistic possibility is that Ukraine is extending the effects of its success around Lyman by contesting positions Russia needs for whatever comes next.
Vivaldi May Have Changed the Next Battle
When Operation Vivaldi first emerged, it was easy to see it as a localized Ukrainian counterattack around Lyman. That interpretation is getting harder to maintain.
Ukraine says the operation destroyed a Russian salient and disrupted Moscow’s attempt to pressure the rear of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Now Russian sources are reporting Ukrainian movement along another approach to those same cities.

Posting a profit on AOI is (not) posting a profit on net income, under which Anthropic remains billions of dollars in the red. This profitability forecast — a flattering projection conveniently leaked to the financial press at a pivotal moment — comes in place of a highly anticipated public IPO prospectus. Anthropic may still be planning to release the prospectus soon, but it's worth noting the company has chosen to lead with spectacle and innuendo, as opposed to the formal legal document. For months, Anthropic has been teasing a public stock offering that hasn't yet materialized, and it remains to be seen whether the latest slowdown talk will impact that timeline.
Despite being one of the world leaders in AI development, the private firm Anthropic has yet to post a quarterly profit. That operating deficit isn't for a lack of trying — and, as the company tells it, could be reversing very soon, at least if you're willing to swallow one massive caveat.
According to new reporting by the Financial Times, the company behind the Claude told a select group of trusted investors that its adjusted operating income (AOI) is set to be positive for the second consecutive quarter.

AOI is an accounting technique that strips out non-recurring costs, giving backers a very specific look under a company's hood. Posting a profit on AOI is very different from posting a profit on net income, otherwise known as the "bottom line," under which Anthropic remains billions of dollars in the red.
Aside from the fact that Anthropic is not about to turn a real profit anytime soon, it may still be a noteworthy signal. The AI world is currently awash in fear-mongering over AI safety, a phenomena some analysts say could signal a turn away from the race-to-the-bottom to build artificial general intelligence toward a more reasonable — if less ambitious — embrace of AI as it currently is.
While it remains to be seen how these narratives and business realities play out in practice, if the top American AI companies choose to stop and let the dust settle, Anthropic may very well find itself ahead of its competition. Though Anthropic is still far underwater, companies like ChatGPT developer OpenAI are somehow even deeper.

As lead AI analyst at the firm SemiAnalysis Joey Brookhart told the FT, "if you continue to operate at these margins and growth rates, it will be so hard to compete [with Anthropic] because they have so much [in the way of computing resources]."
Still, there are some questions in the AI lab's story that have yet to be answered. For one thing, this profitability forecast — a flattering projection conveniently leaked to the financial press at a pivotal moment — comes in place of a highly anticipated public prospectus which the company was expected to make public sometime last week. 20 Senior Officers Killed In Donetsk Missile Strike, Largest Such Hit of the War

A targeted missile strike on two regional Russian army headquarters command posts in occupied Donetsk has revealed, according to subsequent research, that at least 20 mid and senior level officers were killed, effectively decapitating an entire Russian Combined Arms Army which also oversaw the central military district of Donetsk.

The significance of this strike is not just the loss of leadership, but the destruction of two commands which were coordinating the Russian offensives against Ukrainian positions in central and northern Donetsk. This loss has contributed to the faltering Russian assaults in those areas as well as aiding the success of Ukraine's Operation Vivaldi. JL

At least 20 Russian military officers were killed on August 26 in a missile strike on Donetsk. Of these, 18 died that same day, while two others later died from their injuries. Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG missiles were used during the strike. One of the strikes hit a building at 97 Ilyich Avenue, which housed research and industrial institutions before the war. The other target was an underground parking garage with 600 parking spaces beneath an unfinished residential complex—six missiles struck that location. Both sites were being used as command posts by the Russian army. They served at the headquarters of the Central Military District and of the 41st Guards Combined Arms Army. This is the largest known incident to date involving the deaths of Russian Army officers during the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Journalists have identified at least 20 Russian military officers who were killed on August 26 in a missile strike on Donetsk.
The publication Mediazona identified the officers’ surnames.
Of these, 18 died that same day, while two others later died from their injuries.

They served at the headquarters of the Center military group: the headquarters of the Central Military District and the headquarters of the 41st Guards Combined Arms Army.

The head of the occupation administration, Denis Pushilin, reported on his Telegram channel that the target was the Donetsk City shopping center.
According to him, Storm Shadow/SCALP-EG missiles were used during the strike.

The Exile+ channel claimed that one of the strikes hit a building at 97 Ilyich Avenue, which housed research and industrial institutions before the war.

The Ukrainian Telegram channel CyberBoroshno added that one of the targets was an underground parking garage with 600 parking spaces beneath an unfinished residential complex—six missiles struck that location.
Ukrainian OSINT projects speculated that both sites were being used as command posts by the Russian army.
Lists of fatalities
Mediazona published lists of personnel from the headquarters of the Central Military District (military unit No. 33303) and the headquarters of the 41st Guards Combined Arms Army (military unit No. 44424).
The data in these lists is current as of July 2025. In addition to surnames, they include military ranks, positions, and other information.
After cross-referencing these lists with the register of inheritance cases and other state registries, as well as reviewing obituaries of high-ranking officers published over the past month, Mediazona concluded that at least 20 people were killed as a result of the strike on Donetsk on August 26: 18 died that same day, and two others later died from their injuries.List:

Drone units are moving closer to the front line as their increased operation of ground drones - UGVs - makes that aspect of the job more immediate.

But whether piloting drone strikes on Russian targets or managing logistics with ground drones, Ukraine's drone teams have become highly skilled - and deadly - experts in their task. JL

Four men live, sleep, and work in a cramped shelter, drone operators from Ukraine's 66th Mechanized Brigade attached to the 3rd Corps. Every member of the crew can do every job: assemble the drone, prepare it for launch, navigate for the pilot, and fly the strike. The gray zone is less than 10 kilometers away. Crews usually rotate every couple of weeks, but heavy Russian shelling near the positions can delay a rotation. In one corner is a desk with several screens, one showing a video call with other units, another a live map of Donetsk Oblast. The areas marked gray or occupied are different from the picture Russian commanders paint. The soldiers listen to the call as they prepare to join a combined strike. Coordination between neighboring units plays a key role. The 66th Brigade also ranks among the top five units for UGV use, according to the Delta system's June 2026 rating. 20 operators now cover most of the battalion's logistics, running 100 to 150 missions a month.

On a screen, live footage from a reconnaissance drone shows two men in Ukrainian pixel camouflage dashing in short bursts through the ruins of apartment buildings. Then they vanish into a basement.
It is late summer, and the 3rd Army Corps and attached units are fully engaged in a counteroffensive in the Lyman sector called Operation Vivaldi. Russian forces are trying to recapture Lyman, a city in Donetsk Oblast that Russian officials have claimed their forces control. Ukrainian infantry on the ground tell a different story.
For weeks, the operation ran under a news blackout until 3rd Army Corps commander Brig. Gen. Andrii Biletskyi made it public on Sept. 15. By late September, the corps said it had retaken 176 square kilometers using closely coordinated infantry, air defense, electronic warfare, aerial drone units, and unmanned ground vehicles.
A four-person job
Watching the video feed are drone operators from the 66th Mechanized Brigade, subordinate to the 3rd Army Corps. They are waiting for a batch of Darts, fixed-wing strike drones, to join the fight for Lyman.

Their commander, call sign Deputat, is rushing to bring the drones. His car races down a road beneath tunnels of anti-drone netting, pine forests on either side, a landscape typical of northern Donetsk Oblast. Out of the darkness, a roadside coffee stand appears, glowing faintly. The car speeds past, then turns off onto rough ground.

"Turn on the electronic warfare device," Deputat orders a soldier in the car.
After some time, Deputat stops, quickly unloads the cargo, shakes hands with the soldiers, and drives off. The crew carries the drones into the dugout. They moved into this position only recently, after pushing closer to the front line. The gray zone is less than 10 kilometers away.

For hours, units attached to the 3rd Army Corps have been striking a Russian artillery position with HIMARS rockets and drones. According to the 3rd Army Corps, such missions play a crucial role in the operation by pushing Russian mortar and artillery crews out of the area and clearing the way for the infantry.
On the call, someone says, "If I were in their shoes, I'd hop on a motorcycle and get the hell out of there." The soldiers in the dugout laugh. The Ukrainians say the Russian crew won't abandon its howitzer because its soldiers are more afraid of their own commanders.

The strike is delayed. As the wait drags on, the young men grow restless and step out into the dugout's corridor to smoke. Kalash, a soldier with light stubble, is the oldest in the crew. The others jokingly call him Mom. As he cooks breakfast on a camping stove, the smell of scrambled eggs and sausage fills the damp air.

Finally, the duty officer on the call says, "Let's start the mission."
"This is the NAFO crew. We want to join the strike on the howitzer," replies a soldier with the call sign Intelihent, who is piloting today. Every member of the crew can do every job: assemble the drone, prepare it for launch, navigate for the pilot, and fly the strike.
Tsyhan, tall and tanned, assembles a Dart. It reminds him of building Lego as a kid, he says. He and Kalash carry the drone out into the field, set it up for launch, and talk over the radio with the men in the dugout.

"Get out of there," comes the voice over the radio.

"Launch," Tsyhan replies.
The drone must fly several dozen kilometers. Intelihent works the controls while Bratok, a dark-haired soldier, helps him navigate. Back in the dugout, all four stare at the screen, fidgeting nervously on the wooden bench.
"NAFO, locking on target," Intelihent says.
The drone strikes. Direct hit. The men cheer and clink cans of energy drink.
On the reconnaissance drone's feed, a stand of trees bursts into flames. Russian soldiers run out of a dugout and try to put out the fire. Then the feed cuts out. Pleased, the men post screenshots to the platoon's group chat. But someone on the call reports that the smoke is clearing and the target has survived. They must strike again.

"Don't worry, we've got plenty of planes," Kalash tells the others.
But the threat of retaliatory strikes looms over the dugout. Drone operators are among Russia's top targets.
"I think it'll be a few days before they come after us," Tsyhan says.
Eventually, several Ukrainian units working together destroy the Russian artillery position. The 3rd Army Corps said coordination between neighboring units played a key role in the operation.
The men finish the breakfast Kalash made. Some stretch out on camping mats on the wooden benches and sleep fully dressed. Another strike request could come at any mome

Bratok is on duty, keeping an eye on the screens. To pass the time, he flips through live feeds from reconnaissance drones and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). On the screens, the war plays out in real time across the Lyman sector. The video feed from a ground robot catches his eye: a dirt road, and in the corner a tiny call sign that reads Kuzya.
"Kuzya is a legend!" Bratok says.

Elsewhere in the Lyman sector, Kuzya himself is watching the same feed. The young redhead was one of the first UGV operators in the 66th Brigade's tank battalion. He used to be a driver, risking his life to bring food, medicine, and ammunition to the infantry. He still delivers supplies, but at far less risk. His UGVs can carry half a metric ton of cargo and keep going even after hitting a mine.
The battalion began building up its UGV capabilities in early 2026. They learned how to use ground drones from the 3rd Army Corps. Now, the 66th Brigade ranks among the top five units for UGV use, according to the Delta system's June 2026 rating. According to the team, its 20 operators now cover most of the battalion's logistics, running 100 to 150 missions a month and rarely taking a day off.

At first, the battalion's commanders were skeptical of the robots, until a heavily mined road left them unable to resupply a group of Mavic operators. Today, UGVs play an important role in Operation Vivaldi. The 96th Separate Support Battalion’s robots move ahead of the infantry and clear mines. Some are carried behind Russian lines by drones and launch an assault. But less visible work, logistics, matters just as much.
"Soldiers win battles, but logistics wins wars," says Aibolit, a burly man whose long beard gives him a Viking look. At the UGV hub, he decides which cargo goes on which vehicle.
The increased use of UGVs for logistics in the 3rd Army Corps and its attached units means infantry can reach the front line in armored vehicles or on foot, carrying only light backpacks. Reliable logistics also lets support teams deliver small comforts to the front, lifting the morale of infantrymen who may hold the same position for a month.
Orders come in every day. A soldier can order something in the morning and be drinking a soda in the gray zone by midnight. "It's like ordering pizza," Aibolit says.

As evening falls, the men prepare two vehicles, open platforms on massive wheels, for a mission. They load packs of bottled water, fuel canisters, a generator, and sealed boxes of food the soldiers ordered. It takes them only minutes.
"Is the sky clear?" Aibolit asks over the radio.
"Negative. Lancet threat," comes the reply.
"We're holding all movement," Aibolit says.

A drone icon flashes on their screens. It seems to be heading straight for the hub. "Maybe it'll come here, maybe somewhere else," one of them says, and shrugs. The soldiers play it down, saying their town is quiet, yet not a day goes by without a Russian strike. To disrupt Ukrainian logistics, Russian forces freely use guided bombs, including against targets with no apparent military value.
Once the threat has passed, the men drive the vehicles out into the yard. A few minutes later, the robots roll off into the darkness.
Kuzya usually takes the vehicles into the gray zone, where the ground is heavily mined. He knows every pothole and bush on the route. His screen is almost entirely black, except for a stretch of cratered road lit by the robot's headlight.
Along the way, he passes wrecked cars marked with a white "Z." Stray dogs run up and bark at the strange visitor. Before long, they get used to it and trot alongside until they lose interest. Kuzya smiles.

Eventually, the robot stops. Soldiers in camouflage appear on the black-and-white screen and quickly unload the cargo. One walks up to the camera and gives Kuzya a thumbs-up before they disappear into the woods.
Kuzya turns the robot around to reload for the next mission. On a narrow dirt road, it meets another robot, and the two little vehicles circle each other as if they were dancing.
That evening, Deputat drives back from another delivery to his soldiers, beneath the netting, stars peeking through the mesh. A burned-out SUV, recently hit by a Russian Lancet, lies by the roadside.
"When you're coming back from the positions and you see the coffee stand, you know you're safe," he says.

Infantry Attacking In Armored Trucks Were Key To Vivaldi Breakthrough

There have been numerous times during the past two years when the notions of maneuver warfare and armored assault were declared dead due to the harsh realities of the drone-dominated battlefield.

But Ukraine's recent success suggests that, in fact, combined arms can work if sufficient preparation and support are planned for and allocated. In the contemporary context, that means lots of preliminary aerial drone recon and bombardment then followed by ground-and aerial drone-accompanied assault. Just as with the optimal implementation of technology support working in conjunction with humans in business, so in warfare are the same complementary organizational shifts most likely to succeed as they did in Vivaldi. Defying critics who insisted vehicles couldn't survive in the drone-patrolled gray zone, the 3rd Corps repeatedly deployed mechanized forces as it counterattacked across a 100 sq km salient the Russian 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies had extended toward Sloviansk. Maneuvering for months under a veil of secrecy, the 3rd Corps exploited gaps along the flanks of the 20th and 25th CAAs, breaking into the Russian armies' rears and forcing them to pull back across the Zherebets River to avoid encirclement. Armored vehicles were key to the Ukrainian effort. They sped assault troops into battle, dropped them off under fire, and then supported them as they clashed with the Russians. Only after assault routes were scouted and cleared of mines and Russian strongpoints did the manned vehicles and their infantry roll out. Ukraine's command believed that, with adequate support, the vehicles could accomplish their missions—and survive. And they did.

Armored vehicles aren't dead in Ukraine—they just need a lot of help. That's one of the biggest lessons from the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps' Operation Vivaldi, its recent successful counteroffensive just north of the town of Lyman in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast.
Russia spent 18 months building its salient toward Sloviansk; Ukraine took much of it back in three. By 30 September, three of four planned phases in, the operation had returned 176 sq km to Ukrainian control, taken 250 Russian prisoners, and cost Russia more than 5,000 killed and wounded, Ukraine's presidential office said. It also foiled a Russian plan to break into the rear of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk urban area, the office said.

Maneuvering for months under a veil of secrecy, the 3rd Army Corps found and exploited gaps along the flanks of the 20th and 25th CAAs, ultimately breaking into the Russian armies' rears and forcing them to pull back across the Zherebets River in order to avoid encirclement.
Armored vehicles were key to the Ukrainian effort. They sped assault troops into battle, dropped them off under fire, and then supported them as they clashed with the Russians. "Maneuver warfare isn't going anywhere," stated Ryan O'Leary, a US Army veteran who once commanded volunteers in Ukraine.

3rd Army Corps commanders knew they were taking a risk deploying armored vehicles in a Russian-controlled salient patrolled by first-person-view drones from Russia's elite Rubicon Center drone unit. But they clearly believed that, with adequate support, the vehicles could accomplish their missions—and survive.
They were right. A dramatic video shot by 3rd Army Corps troopers depicts the troopers disembarking from their armored trucks and rushing into the fight while small arms fire clatters all around them.
Given the intensity of the Russian fire, a mechanized assault "was the only real way to push positions in an effective manner to keep losses low as well as gain and hold momentum and aggression," O'Leary wrote. Walking into battle under the cover of trees might help the infantry avoid the attention of overhead drones, but it takes too long to sustain an aggressive assault, and it can be difficult to mass enough footborne infantry to overcome stiff enemy defenses.
"This is something that hasn't changed even with the advent of drone warfare coming of age," O'Leary added. "Suppression tactics and such have changed and now there is more than just indirect fires and counterassaults that you must be able to suppress and plan for."
But the concept of the infantry-carrying armored vehicle "isn't going anywhere," O'Leary stressed. "Especially when it takes a drone tens of minutes to get to target area, acquire target and hit the target. Right now, the front is extremely susceptible to maneuvering forces on assaults if it is planned right and executed properly."

The 3rd Army Corps' Operation Vivaldi is an excellent example of an operation that was planned right and executed properly—in ways that helped the corps' mechanized forces fight and survive.

Careful preparation
The corps explained that it deployed footborne scouts to find the best paths for follow-on vehicular assaults—and subsequent medical evacuations. Scouts "conducted recon of the front lines, ensured the breakthrough of equipment and led adjacent units along secret paths while evacuating the wounded," the 3rd Army Corps stated.
Before the armored vehicles rolled into action along the pre-scouted paths, the 3rd Army Corps deployed robotic engineering vehicles to clear Russian mines. After that, the corps sent in old BTR-60 wheeled armored vehicles modified for remote control and packed with anti-tank mines. These "robotic kamikaze complexes ... were used to demolish the enemy's strongest fortifications," the corps said.
Only after the assault routes were scouted and cleared of mines and Russian strongpoints did the manned vehicles and their precious infantry cargo roll out. We don't know how many losses the 3rd Army Corps' mechanized infantry suffered on the attack, but we do know they ultimately prevailed—when the battered Russian 20th and 25th CAAs retreated.

"Recent Ukrainian operations demonstrate that maneuver is not dead," stressed Mick Ryan, a retired Australian army general. "Despite the difficulty in ground operations maneuver observed in eastern Ukraine over the past few years, offensive operations are still possible in modern war. But they need the intellectual effort to develop new techniques to make them viable and repeatable at scale."
In addition to the reconnaissance and robots-first engineering and suppression tactics the 3rd Army Corps employed, Ryan recommended commanders deploy more drone-grounding electronic warfare and use AI tools to help plan attacks.
But ages-old human elements are still essential, Ryan wrote. "Developing viable methods for offensive tactical and operational maneuver in the 21st century also demands the inclusion of older ideas about the employment of mass, logistic support and casualty evacuation [and the] maintenance of morale and leader's provision of purpose to their people."
Even when the assault route is clear, it's understandably terrifying to ride in an armored vehicle across drone-patrolled terrain. But a good leader can motivate their troops to try.

OpenAI Reduces Revenue Projection By $20 Billion Less Than Expected

It is not clear that really qualifies as such in the AI age, but with the markets already skittish about fears that the AI hype has far exceeded the realistic potential market, any sign of doubt can be seized upon by investors as another indication of the bubble popping. JL

On Sumy Front, Ukraine Counterattacks Push Back Russians, Mirror Vivaldi Success

The lessons and benefits from Operation Vivaldi's success on the Lyman front are now being transferred to other sectors.

On the Sumy front, Ukrainian special forces have launched a series of coordinated counterattacks which have surprised the Russians in this lightly held area, pushing them back. Just as at Lyman, this local tactical advance could become a broader offensive effort - and strategic opportunity - forcing the Kremlin to again redeploy troops from other areas to stem the threat. Ukraine is beginning to turn local counterattacks into a wider problem for Russia on the entire Sumy front. The Ukrainians created a bridgehead for further operations while improving their tactical positions along the frontline in the Sumy direction. Ukraine’s Vivaldi Operation in the Lyman sector proved that carefully planned and executed counterattacks can catch the Russians off guard and roll back their advances. Russia might (be forced) to send reinforcements from the Donbas, to reinforce the less vital sector of Sumy in order to try to halt the Ukrainian advances. This would further weaken their offensive power and reduce their reserves, just as their rate of advance has already dropped significantly compared to last year.

On the Sumy front, Ukrainian forces are mounting counterattacks eastward after crossing the river. After fierce fighting in this sector, Ukrainian soldiers reentered the village of Kindrativka and pushed toward the rear of Andriivka, aiming to encircle the small settlement, while also retaking a series of treelines inside the village. This came days after Russian infiltrators were expelled from the forested area around Korchakivka. Here, the Russians managed to infiltrate the forest and take up positions there, which allowed them to accumulate and push westward.

However, the scale of Ukraine’s counterattack became visible after these Ukrainian clearing operations inside the forest. Notably, the Ukrainian advance didn’t stop, and further east they managed to fully clear the Russian presence in Marine, which the Russians had managed to infiltrate and gain a foothold in. Recapturing this village allowed the Ukrainians to push towards the village of Yunakivka, where they entrenched themselves in the southern part. As a result, they effectively created a bridgehead for further operations while improving their tactical positions along the frontline in the Sumy direction.

After this successful series of counterattacks, Ukrainian special forces of the one hundred and fortieth Special Operations Battalion operating in this sector released footage of their clearing operations. They wore ghillie suits and used the thick vegetation in the forest to conceal their movement during the raid to get as close as possible to the Russian positions without being detected by reconnaissance drones. After they managed to close in on the Russian dugout undetected, a fierce firefight erupted between the Ukrainian operators and the Russian soldiers.

The Ukrainians quickly suppressed the Russians with small arms fire, while tactically manoeuvring around them to encircle them while the Russians were pinned down. During this exchange of fire, one Russian soldier was killed, which prompted the Ukrainians to offer the remaining enemy soldier the chance to surrender. Heavily outgunned, the Russian soldier gave up, which allowed the Ukrainian operators to search the dugout and capture a phone, which can be used to extract valuable intelligence.

These Ukrainian counterattacks matter because, if they push the Russians back in the Sumy region, they could threaten a second Kursk offensive. Even the possibility of this happening again is critical for the Russians because, during the first Kursk offensive, Ukraine captured more than a thousand square kilometers of Russian territory, proving Russia is not as invincible as it portrays itself. Ukraine’s recent Vivaldi Operation in the Lyman sector also proved that carefully planned and executed counterattacks can catch the Russians off guard and roll back their advances significantly. Because of this, Russia might send reinforcements from more important sectors, such as Donbas, to reinforce the less vital sector of Sumy in order to try to halt the Ukrainian advances. This would further weaken their offensive potential and reduce their reserves, when their rate of advance has already dropped significantly compared to last year.

Overall, the real danger for Russia is that Ukraine is beginning to turn local counterattacks into a wider problem for the entire Sumy front. If Ukrainian forces keep forcing Russian units out of exposed positions, Moscow may have to spend valuable reserves simply to prevent a larger breakthrough from developing. That would create a difficult choice for Russia to either reinforce Sumy and weaken more important fronts, or accept the risk of another Ukrainian operation deep inside Russian territory. Ukraine does not need to recapture huge amounts of territory here to achieve a major effect because the threat of a breakthrough alone could force Russia to stretch its already limited manpower and reserves even further.

Russian Railways deploys militarized engineering corps whose purpose is rapid track remediation. (But) by starving the Russian grid of high-voltage power and digitally hijacking automated switches, Ukrainian units and partisans have left millions of tons of raw materials and foreign munitions completely flash-frozen across 9,000 kilometers of Siberian taiga. Spaced every 40 to 60 kilometers along these isolated corridors sit massive traction substations. They draw high-voltage power from the regional grid, step it down through complex oil-filled transformers, and feed it directly into the overhead lines. Instead of planting charges on track beds, clandestine units shifted focus to the 110kV step-down transformers and relay hubs. A section of damaged steel track might be repaired in hours. When armchair tacticians daydream about severing a national railway grid, they invariably fixate on blowing up the tracks.
It yields sensational imagery, twisted iron rails, charred ties, and cinematic plumes of black smoke for social media feeds.
It is also an exercise in utter strategic futility.
Russian Railways (RZD) deploys militarized engineering corps whose singular purpose is rapid track remediation.
Hand a Soviet-drilled repair unit six hours, a crane truck, and a fresh segment of steel, and they will have 6,000-ton freight trains thundering over the exact same patch of ballast before nightfall.
That precise insight powered a silent $2.4 billion industrial paralysis orchestrated across the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM).

By systematically starving the grid of high-voltage power and hijacking automated switching architecture, Ukrainian intelligence units and partisan cells left millions of tons of raw materials and foreign munitions completely flash-frozen across 9,000 kilometers of Siberian taiga.
The Russian war machine and its Far East export economy run along two heavy-gauge steel arteries cutting through permafrost and mountain ranges:
1. The Trans-Siberian Railway: Over 9,200 kilometers of double-tracked, high-voltage rail spanning from Moscow to the Pacific terminals at Vladivostok and Nakhodka.
2. The Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM): The rugged northern bypass threading 4,300 kilometers through volatile mountain terrain north of Lake Baikal.
These corridors represent the economic lifeblood of eastern Russia, carrying Siberian coal, crude oil, and timber to Asian markets, while funneling millions of North Korean artillery shells and ballistic missiles directly westward toward the frontline.
Spaced every 40 to 60 kilometers along these isolated corridors sit massive traction substations. They draw high-voltage power from the regional grid, step it down through complex oil-filled transformers, and feed it directly into the overhead lines.
Instead of planting charges on track beds, clandestine units shifted focus to the 110kV step-down transformers and relay hubs.
A standard section of damaged steel track might be repaired in hours. Replacing specialized high-voltage infrastructure can take vastly longer because the equipment is complex, heavy, difficult to transport, and often built for specific grid requirements.

Without electrical draw, entire regions stall. At the height of the sabotage campaign, over 100,000 freight cars and 1,200 electric locomotives sat motionless along Siberian sidings, choked out by a total lack of power on the lines ahead.
The apex of this asymmetric strategy unfolded deep inside the Severomuysky Tunnel on the BAM route, a 15-kilometer engineering conduit drilled through solid rock in Buryatia.
Operating in complete secrecy, Ukrainian operatives detonated explosive devices inside a moving freight train laden with aviation fuel directly within the tunnel shaft. The inferno gutted the train and melted the internal catenary wiring.
When RZD attempted to bypass the subterranean disaster by redirecting military freights over the 35-meter-high Devil's Bridge detour, secondary charges detonated on the trestle right as a second fuel train crossed.
The primary artery and its sole bypass were sealed simultaneously. For weeks, the supply of North Korean munitions flowing west and Siberian commodities heading east came to a complete standstill.
Concurrently, Ukrainian cyber specialists infiltrated RZD's centralized SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
By corrupting automated signal boxes and electronic switching relays, hackers forced rail operators back to manual, ground-crew dispatching, slashing line capacity across affected sectors by over 70%.
Port demurrage and cargo penalties reportedly accounted for around $1.1 billion, as bulk cargo remained stuck on sidings and container ships sat idle around Vladivostok.
Another $700 million came from the immobilization of the RZD freight fleet, with more than 100,000 freight cars allegedly frozen in place and transit revenues disrupted across thousands of kilometers of railway.
The rerouting of military supplies added another estimated $600 million, as delays to North Korean ammunition shipments forced more expensive alternative logistics.
Together, those losses produced the claimed $2.4 billion cumulative economic impact of the railway paralysis.

The pattern of Russian advance in Donetsk has become unmistakable: destroy the Ukrainian-held objective city before exhausting themselves in taking it.

This may be gratifying at some crude, nihilistic peasant Russian level, but it t renders the former transport junction and supply depot uninhabitable while making it virtually useless as a base for further advance, let alone of future economic value. Pokrovsk is but the latest example. Captured after two years of brutal, bloody attrition, its smoking ruins then became... another mound of rubble to be bypassed rather than advanced from. And so, rather than using Pokrovsk effectively as a springboard, Russian troops are again facing a similar cataclysm of death and damage as they try and fail to take the Fortress Belt. JL

Russian forces had been grinding toward Pokrovsk for two years. When it finally fell in early 2026, the Kremlin heralded it as the prelude to the collapse of Ukraine’s Fortress Belt. What actually transpired was a Russian military that scored a tactical victory but had no idea how to capitalize on it. Russia had spent so much time and resources capturing a city that no longer mattered, it had little left for the next phase of the campaign. As its operational plans disintegrated under Operation Vivaldi, the northern flank of Russia’s Southern Group of Forces became “acutely vulnerable” to Ukrainian counterattacks and interdiction missions. The fall of Pokrovsk was to signal the end of the beginning. Russian forces had been grinding toward the city for nearly two years and when it finally fell in early 2026 Kremlin propagandists heralded it as the prelude to the collapse of Ukraine’s entire eastern defense. They said the road to the “Fortress Belt” — the network of fortified cities that make up the backbone of the Ukrainian-held Donbas — was now open.
It had not.
What actually transpired is a story of a military that scored a tactical victory but then had no idea how to capitalize on it. It is a story of a Russian command so out of touch with reality that it continued to file progress reports to Moscow even as its operational plans disintegrated on the ground. And it is a story of a Ukrainian military that despite all odds regained momentum and destroyed the Kremlin’s most ambitious plan of the year.
This is the story of why Pokrovsk was never the real target — and why Russia’s true target, the Fortress Belt, has become the graveyard of its Donbas ambitions.
The Fortress Belt Ukraine’s Last Stand in the East
To get a good idea of why Russia is so interested in taking the Fortress Belt, you need to know what the Fortress Belt is.
The Fortress Belt is not one fortification. It is a string of four industrial cities in Donetsk Oblast — Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostiantynivka — linked by a single highway and network of defensive positions that have been hardened over more than a decade of war. The cities are the last major urban agglomeration in Donetsk Oblast that remains under Ukrainian control, and comprise the administrative and military backbone of Ukraine’s presence in the east.
They are of enormous strategic value. It is the belt, the main strategic objective in the whole war for Russia, the territory Moscow has demanded to be surrendered without a fight in every round of negotiations. The taking of the Fortress Belt would be the last step in Russia’s conquest of Donetsk Oblast, it would secure the land bridge to Crimea, and it would give the Kremlin a political win to sell to the Russian people. Losing the Fortress Belt would mean Ukraine would lose its last major defensive position in the east — a collapse that could lead to a cascading retreat across the entire front.
The belt has been in use for four and a half years. Russian forces have attacked it from the east, north and south. They have tried frontal attacks, flankings and attritional grinding. None of this worked — until 2026, when a new strategy emerged.
Pokrovsk’s Fall: Victory Without Exploitation
Pokrovsk fell in early 2026, after a nearly two-year campaign. It was a blow for Ukraine — a logistics hub that had supplied Ukrainian forces throughout the Donbas for years. But the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) judged the operational significance of Pokrovsk had been neutralized by Russian strikes as early as July 2025. “By the time Russian troops finally crawled into the city center it had “long ceased to be a functional objective”.
More importantly, Russia did not exploit the gain. No significant progress was made to the west or northwest. Nearby, the village of Hryshyne itself remained contested. The capture of the Fortress Belt is not “imminent or inevitable” after the fall of Pokrovsk, as the Kremlin claims, the ISW said.
The reason is plain. Russia had spent so much time and resources capturing a city that no longer mattered, it had little left for the next phase of the campaign. And it wasted what was left to it.
The New Strategy: Strangling the Fortress Belt
When frontal assaults failed, Russia changed course. Rather than attacking the Fortress Belt head on, it would strangle it.
The tactic is known as battlefield air interdiction (BAI) — the use of drones, missiles and glide bombs to strike behind the front line to cut off Ukrainian forces from their supply lines. Russian forces had run a similar campaign late in 2025 to prepare the ground for their advances near Pokrovsk and Hulyaipole. In 2026 they repeated this against Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
The list of targets was exacting and catastrophic. Russian forces increasingly targeted Ukrainian locomotives, the trains that were vital for moving supplies to the front. In July 2026, Russian military command supplied its forces with 1,000 Molniya fixed-wing loitering munitions and directed increased strikes against Ukrainian logistics in and around Kramatorsk. Major bridges were hit too. Early August geolocated footage shows the aftermath of a Russian MLRS strike heavily damaging the Cherivkovsky Bridge over the Kazennyi Torets River in Sloviansk, a key logistics route linking Sloviansk to the H-20 highway and Kramatorsk.
The goal was simple — to sever the Fortress Belt’s sustained logistics. If the defenders could not be resupplied, they could not hold out.
The campaign had real consequences. Both Russian and Ukrainian sources commented on the negative effects. Logistics missions at nite in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk were difficult. Hardly any vehicles could get in and out of Kostiantynivka unscathed. By winter, almost no vehicles and very few unmanned ground vehicles could enter and exit the city without being detected and targeted.
But wars are not won by strangulation alone. To capture the Fortress Belt Russia had to break through and that required a plan.
Caught in a Pincer Movement The Plan That Went Wrong
Russia’s operational design for 2026 was an ambitious one. Instead of an open attack on the Fortress Belt, Russian forces would lay siege to it from two directions.
The plan was for two simultaneous efforts. From the south, the Russian forces were to advance on the fortress cities from the Pokrovsk and Dobropillia directions. From the north they would drive west out of the Lyman salient, cutting the roads and railroads that keep the belt alive. If both pincers closed the Fortress Belt would be surrounded and its defenders would have to surrender or die.
The critical part was the northern prong. Russian forces had established a salient north of Lyman in late 2025, a bulge in the front line that threatened Sloviansk and the entire Fortress Belt. From here they could go west toward the Zherebets River and cut ground lines of communication to Ukraine.
It was a plan that Western analysts and Russian military bloggers as well regarded as unrealistic. But it was all Russia had. And Ukraine blew it up in 2026.
Operation Vivaldi: The Counterattack That Altered Everything
In September 2026, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps declassified a counteroffensive that had been conducted under tight operational secrecy for months. It was called Operation Vivaldi, and by any measure, it was the most successful Ukrainian operation of the year.
The goal of the operation was not to take back the Fortress Belt, it was already in the hands of the Ukrainians. The idea was to break Russia’s ability to encircle it. And it worked.
The Third Army Corps under Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, Ukrainian forces hit north of Lyman using a combination of drones, ground robots and electronic warfare. They pushed Russian forces out of Novoselivka, Oleksandrivka, Yarova and the outskirts of Koroviy Yar and fully liberated Serednye. The breakthrough to the Chornyi Zherebets River was only the beginning of what Biletskyi called a “multi-season campaign”.
The results were catastrophic for Russia. The ISW said the tactical and operational gains north of Lyman had made Moscow’s “already unrealistic campaign design to encircle the fortress cities from both north and south completely unviable”. One of the leading military bloggers close to the Kremlin admitted that the momentum of the Ukrainian counteroffensive would significantly slow down Moscow’s planned offensive on Slovyansk, the main operational target after the capture of Lyman. The blogger noted that the northern flank of Russia’s Southern Group of Forces became “acutely vulnerable” to Ukrainian counterattacks and interdiction missions.
The human cost for Russia was enormous. Russian personnel losses were estimated at 1,500. More than 12,000 reconnaissance and strike drones were lost and hundreds of armored fighting vehicles were destroyed.
But the more serious damage was to Russia’s operational planning. Russian commanders either did not appreciate the permanent loss of the Lyman salient or refused to accept it and stubbornly attempted to cut Ukrainian ground lines of communication into the Fortress Belt from the west, ISW analysts have previously noted. Meanwhile, Russian military leaders in Moscow stayed “privately aware of operational realities on the ground,” while their field commanders sent in “fabricated progress reports” to maintain the appearance of never-ending advances.
The Culture of Lies How Russia’s Command Lied to Itself
And Operation Vivaldi revealed more than a failed military plan. It revealed a lying culture within the Russian military that has become a strategic liability.
Russian military bloggers, who have become some of the most vocal critics of the Russian command, put the blame squarely on field commanders and the military’s culture of “fabricated progress reports.” They observed that the systematic inflation of territorial claims to higher headquarters undermined theater-level operational planning. One prominent military observer disclosed that several Russian commanders attempted to hide huge casualty figures by rushing to form ad hoc assault detachments of untrained replacement troops in a desperate attempt to retake lost territory, even as military brass in Moscow privately knew what was happening on the battlefield.
The results were predictable. When Ukrainian forces struck, the Russian command was caught flat-footed — because it had been lied to by its own officers. Russian forces were thrown into a meat grinder when ordered to hold positions they had already lost. And when Moscow claimed to have encircled Ukrainian forces around Dobropillya, the ISW found no evidence of major Russian gains. The announcement was a total fiction, an escalation of the Kremlin’s cognitive warfare campaign.
This is not a victorious military. It’s a military that lies to itself.
The Human Toll: Soldiers and Besieged Cities
Behind the maps and the statistics are people, soldiers holding positions they’ve held for months, and civilians living in cities that Russia is trying to make unlivable.
Kostiantynivka, a city of 78,000 before the 2022 invasion, has been under pressure from Russia for months. ISW analysts said Russian forces have penetrated at least 12.69 percent of the city. DeepState says the city is “being razed to the ground and turned into ruins.” Russian forces had taken control of only about half the city, according to UK Defense Intelligence — despite Russian claims that it had fallen.
Fighting in Kostiantynivka has been marked by the “kill zone,” a 15-to-25-kilometer belt around the city in which any movement is spotted and destroyed by drones. By mid-winter 2025 few vehicles and fewer UGVs could enter and leave the city without a scratch. Ukrainian infantry was still holding out on the eastern and southern outskirts of the city, but many were isolated to the point of being practically doomed. There was no possibility of rotating vehicles, or of evacuating casualties. Russian drone teams were intercepting even the heavy bomber drones that were used to resupply zero-line infantry more and more often.
The battle for Kostiantynivka is not a war of spectacular breakthroughs. It is a war of inches, of war-weary troops on both sides, in cities being slowly turned into ruins. And it’s a war Ukraine is resolved not to lose.
The Strategic Equation: Why the Fortress Belt is Still Relevant
The strategic equation has not changed fundamentally, in spite of the slow progress of Russia’s BAI campaign. The most defensible line in Ukraine’s east is the Fortress Belt. And Russia remains “functionally incapable” of militarily capturing all of Donetsk Oblast in 2026, ISW said.
And the numbers tell the story. Russian forces consolidated or captured about 90.35 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory in August 2026 — compared with more than 500 square kilometers in August 2025. Russia’s rate of advance has dropped more than 80 percent on a year-on-year basis.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have been recapturing territory. In the winter and spring of 2026 they recaptured more than 745 square kilometers in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts — a figure that does not include more recent gains.
And Russia’s losses keep mounting. “The Kremlin’s own military bloggers now concede that Ukraine’s counteroffensive momentum will ‘significantly postpone’ Moscow’s planned drive against Slovyansk. One blogger said Russian commanders have been throwing together emergency assault detachments of untrained replacements in a desperate attempt to retake lost ground, trying to hide huge casualty rates.
The Fortress Belt will not fall. It is about to become the graveyard of Russia’s Donbas ambitions.
Conclusion: Pokrovsk and Beyond
The fall of Pokrovsk was to open the road to the Fortress Belt. Instead, it opened a pitfall.
What Russia spent nearly two years doing was capturing a city that was irrelevant by then only to find they didn’t have the troops, the logistics and the operational competence to exploit the gain. Its new strategy of air interdiction to choke the Fortress Belt has imposed costs but not broken Ukrainian defenses. Its grand plan to encircle the belt from two directions was shattered by a Ukrainian counteroffensive that Russian commanders never saw coming because they had been lied to by their own officers.
The war in the Donbas continues. It could be years before it’s over. The fortifications are formidable, but they are only as strong as the soldiers who man them, and the supply lines that sustain them. Russia will keep hitting bridges, trains and roads. Ukraine will continue to fight, change and counter attack.
But one thing is certain: the story of the inevitability of a Russian victory in the Donbas is untrue. The Fortress Belt is secure. Operation Vivaldi has disrupted Russia’s encirclement plans. And the data, on territorial gains, on casualties, on logistics, tells a story of a Russian military that is moving slower than at any point since the early days of the war.
The real target was never Pokrovsk. It was the Fortress Belt. And the Fortress Belt remains intact.

Jobs in certain manufacturing categories supplying components to data centers are in great demand - but employers are worried about too much hiring or expansion for fear the AI boom may go bust. Similarly, AI startups' need for offices is reviving commercial real estate markets in the Bay Area and New York - but also making it unaffordable for other businesses. There is also fear that the young AI companies, flush with cash and the belief that they own the future, are overpaying for prime office space, which may contribute to their going bust - and leave landlords hanging. And AI is contributing to a dramatic increase in advertising, which is making it more expensive for everyone else. In the history of technology adoption - which can take 30 years to become fully integrated - these are still early days for AI. Some economic repercussions of the artificial intelligence boom are impossible to miss. There are data centers measured in miles and retirement accounts soaring from the stock market’s AI mania.
But like waves pounding a coastline, AI is steadily reshaping parts of the U.S. economy in ways that aren’t immediately obvious. Zooming in on those changes reveals how the AI investment boom is creating economic dynamism but also instability.

In San Francisco and New York, AI companies are grabbing office space fast enough to revive commercial real estate — and also drive up rents for everyone else. Across the United States, the data center construction spree is boosting employment in some sectors and buoying once-fringe ideas for energy generation — but also fueling anxiety about what happens if the AI boom goes bust.

As the U.S. economy increasingly depends on AI, optimism about the technology’s potential is tempered by a growing awareness of its economic headaches and the risk that the AI boom could collapse, threatening Americans’ prosperity, corporate profits and the country’s growth.
A bright spot for U.S. manufacturing jobs

While Americans fear a white-collar job wipeout from AI, the data center construction boom has provided a dose of good news for the U.S. manufacturing sector, which has shrunk by hundreds of thousands of jobs in the past few years.
Employment for people who build the equipment and parts that data centers run on — including gas turbines to generate power, wiring, electrical switchboards and other specialized components — is one of just two categories of manufacturing jobs that have consistently grown in the past few years, according to an analysis by Jiaxin He, a research assistant at the bipartisan think tank Economic Innovation Group.
He found that wages are also surging for those specialized electrical component jobs. (Aerospace-related employment is the other growing category of manufacturing.)

That manufacturing boost, combined with extra employment of electricians and skilled trade workers on site at data centers, suggests that President Donald Trump has a point about the unpopular data center building spree: It has been an economic boost in some ways.
If the data center building mania only lasts a few years, the jobs it creates might not sustain a full lifetime of work.

But Rachel Lipson, a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and author of “The New American Frontier: Job Training for the Next Technological Age,” believes that data center-related manufacturing and construction work will hold up at least for awhile, even if the AI boom doesn’t. She said there’s a big backlog of data center projects that can last for years, and that existing data centers require a permanent, specialized workforce.
Lipson said, though, that would-be employees get spooked when manufacturing projects are canceled or delayed. She said the fear that job opportunities won’t last can create a talent drain, as workers look to alternatives.
Jet engines remade into power plants

As power-guzzling AI data centers mushroom across the country, more are being built with their own private power plants to help supply the electricity they need.
That has kicked off a transformation of the energy industry and of the Wall Street money machine to pay for the projected explosion in electricity demand. One piece of machinery has become essential in the data center energy mania: hulking industrial generators.

These machines, some of which are essentially jet engines, have doubled or tripled in price over the past five years, said Mark Axford, who advises companies on deals for natural gas-powered generators known as gas turbines. Data centers have ordered so many that he says the typical wait time for popular models has stretched to four years.
“Nobody has ever waited that long for a gas turbine,” said Axford, a 45-year industry veteran and president of Axford Turbine Consultants.
Data centers are generating their own electricity partly to move faster than utility companies and in response to complaints that they’re straining U.S. electric grids and driving up household utility bills.

Some local communities and environmentalists are now alarmed about pollution caused by Silicon Valley companies that previously pledged to lower planet-warming emissions.
But the new interest in power generation is creating opportunities for what have been less popular or unlikely energy ideas that could benefit everyone or go nowhere.
Axford and Whitaker Irvin Jr., chief executive of Q Hydrogen, say that alternatives to fossil fuel energy such as hydrogen, solar and nuclear power are getting a fresh look in an era of soaring AI energy demand.

For years after the coronavirus pandemic hit, vast tracts of office space sat empty in New York and San Francisco towers. Now, deep-pocketed AI companies are helping propel a commercial real estate revival.
In the city at the heart of the AI boom, AI companies account for about half of newly leased office space in San Francisco this year, according to real estate firm CBRE. Another real estate firm, Savills, said AI companies are responsible for about one-third of new leases.San Francisco’s office vacancy rate remains much higher than it was before the pandemic. But flush AI tenants are great for landlords and for the vitality of San Francisco, where business corridors turned into ghost towns starting in 2020.
The downside is that the AI money is creating tough competition for every other would-be tenant.
“Other companies are having a harder time finding space because of the AI demand,” said Colin Yasukochi, executive director of CBRE’s tech insights center. Highly paid AI workers are also making San Francisco’s expensive housing market even crazier.
Michael McCandless, a veteran San Francisco real estate executive with Savills, said there’s a risk of a dot-com style implosion in “the boom-bust historic San Francisco way.” AI may be new but the risky economic dynamics it’s creating are not.
Even in much larger New York, AI companies are big factor in what CBRE estimates is a decade high in Manhattan office leasing. That’s causing both glee and worries about the future.Last week, an influential pro-business group in New York said it was worried that AI companies are overextending themselves on office leases while AI is potentially eroding local jobs in industries such as finance and media. Office leasing growth should not be “mistaken for broad-based economic opportunity,” said the report from the Partnership for New York City.

AI is also one of the biggest forces behind a near-record surge of advertising across the web, mobile apps, streaming video services, television and newspapers, according to an analysis by Madison & Wall, a technology and media consulting firm.
Both young and more established AI companies are spending gobs of money to promote themselves to people and business customers, including in a blitz of Super Bowl TV commercials this year.
AI technologies are also making it easier for businesses to create, target and buy advertising messages placed with Google, Meta and others. Because AI has squeezed the fees that firms can charge for human-created ads, companies have more budget to spend on ads, said Luke Stillman, managing director at Madison & Wall.
Stillman estimated that those AI influences are adding tens of billions of dollars to the yearly total that businesses spend on advertising.

Stillman noted that the advertising market had been healthy for years before AI recently became an economic force. But if the boom cools or collapses, he said it would likely dent consumer and business confidence as well as economic growth, ultimately shrinking what businesses spend on marketing.
“There are not other obvious pockets of demand with enough scale to fully replace the AI-related tailwinds if they disappear,” Stillman said.

Brovdi also noted an increase in the density and frequency of Russian attacks in early October, linking this escalation to ongoing covert Russian mobilisation.
The most significant surge was recorded on the Dobropillia-Pokrovsk front within the sector of the 1st Azov Corps of Ukraine's National Guard.
There, USF operators killed and wounded 1,268 Russian soldiers during the first five days of October. For the same period in September, the figure was 884, and in August – 664. Based on calculations provided by Brovdi, this represents an increase of approximately 43% and 91% respectively.
Brovdi emphasised that the statistics cover exclusively the performance of units under the USF grouping and do not include losses inflicted on the Russians by other units from the defence forces.

The "Quiet" Ukraine Oleksandrivka Offensive Keeps Making Gains

While fighting in the Donbas, including Operation Vivaldi, consumes much of the world's attention, Ukraine's southern offensive, comprising parts of three oblasts, continues to gain territory and inflict casualties on Russian forces.

The primary significance of this operation is that it demonstrates how Ukrainian troops, fighting on multiple fronts - and often without the resources available to those in the Donbas, - are also pushing the Russians back, suggesting that the Kremlin's military is stretched beyond its capacity to accomplish the tasks Putin has set for it. More importantly, Ukrainian forces already control several additional settlements that have not yet been added to the publicly announced results of the operation and up to ten more settlements may be added to that list. The offensive began in January, initially towards Huiliapole, and has continued through two major offensive phases. The campaign has survived the loss of initial surprise, heavier drone pressure and extended logistical lines. September reporting showed that the front was still moving after the larger spring and summer phases

For months, most of the attention on Ukraine’s counterattacks has been focused elsewhere, dominated by headlines out of Lyman, Kupiansk and Dobropillia. Meanwhile, another major Ukrainian offensive has been quietly running across the intersection where Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts meet. On October 1, Air Assault Forces Commander Oleh Apostol said offensive operations on the Oleksandrivka front remain underway. More importantly, he said Ukrainian forces already control several additional settlements that have not yet been added to the publicly announced results of the operation. Apostol said up to ten more settlements may eventually be added to that list, explaining that the military is deliberately keeping current results quiet so Russian forces have less information about where to send reserves or reinforce threatened areas. Ukraine is not saying it is about to capture ten villages. Apostol said Ukrainian forces already hold several additional settlements, while as many as ten could eventually be added to the published total as the campaign continues. The offensive itself began on January 29.
This Has Been Going On Since January
By August, Ukraine’s Air Assault Forces said Ukrainian troops had restored control over 26 settlements and more than 745 square kilometers during the Oleksandrivka operation. Twelve of those settlements were listed in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, ten in Donetsk and four in Zaporizhzhia. The military separately reported that Ukrainian forces had searched for and destroyed Russian troops that infiltrated Ukrainian rear areas covering more than another 300 square kilometers. Ukrainska Pravda’s investigation suggests that the 745-square-kilometer total should not be read as one continuous block of newly liberated ground. Some areas were retaken outright, while others had to be cleared of Russian groups that had infiltrated behind Ukrainian positions. The battlefield was messy, and once you get into what Ukrainian troops actually encountered, that becomes one of the most interesting pieces of the operation.

Ukraine Launched It Because Russia Was Planning Something Else
Ukrainska Pravda identifies former Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi as the initiator of the Oleksandrivka offensive. In written responses provided to UP, Syrskyi said Ukrainian planners concluded in the second half of 2025 that Russia intended to attack not only around Pokrovsk but also along the Huliaipole axis. According to Syrskyi, the Russian plan called for breaking through around the Huliaipole-Dobropillia line and eventually threatening Ukrainian forces around Orikhiv. Ukraine’s answer was to attack on the neighboring Oleksandrivka axis. Syrskyi said the goal was to disrupt Russia’s plans, inflict losses and straighten the Ukrainian frontline. He also said the Ukrainian attack struck toward the rear of Russia’s planned offensive grouping and forced Moscow to redirect forces. According to Syrskyi, Russia moved some elements of its 90th Division away from the Pokrovsk area in response.

That redeployment claim comes from Syrskyi and should be treated as his account of the operation. The wider outcome is easier to see. The Russian offensive toward Orikhiv that Ukrainian planners had feared did not materialize during the spring-summer campaign in the form they expected. Ukrainska Pravda assessed the Oleksandrivka operation as an important part of disrupting that plan, though public evidence cannot tell us exactly how much of the outcome came from this offensive compared with other battlefield factors. Russia was preparing to create another problem for Ukraine; Ukraine attacked somewhere Russia now had to worry about instead.
It Was Really Two Offensives
Calling Oleksandrivka one uninterrupted eight-month push makes the campaign sound much cleaner than it was. Ukrainska Pravda found that the operation actually consisted of two separate offensives with a short break between them. The first began early in 2026 north of Huliaipole.

Ukrainian Air Assault and assault troops pushed northwest and northeast using both heavy equipment and small infantry groups. According to UP, Ukrainian forces advanced roughly 9 to 11 kilometers into Russian positions. The original plan appears to have been more ambitious. UP reported that at least one part of the plan called for Ukrainian forces to push another 10 kilometers or more and reach deeper into the Russian rear from the direction of Uspenivka. That didn’t happen. A senior Ukrainian participant in the operation told UP that Ukraine did not have enough forces to carry the attack that far. Ukraine advanced and disrupted Russian plans, but it also ran into the same problem nearly every offensive eventually does: troops, equipment and logistics are not unlimited. The first operation then helped create the conditions for a much wider second attack.
Then Ukraine Opened More Than 50 Kilometers of Front
The second offensive began on May 5 across a stretch of frontline more than 50 kilometers wide, roughly from Nove Zaporizhzhia in Zaporizhzhia Oblast to Filiia in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. UP assessed that the operation aimed to push Russian forces as far as possible out of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, generally toward the Komar and Velyka Novosilka area. Additional Air Assault formations arrived for the second phase, including the 78th, 79th and 80th brigades, while the 95th Brigade remained heavily involved. Ukrainian troops interviewed by UP said the first two to three weeks of both offensives were particularly effective because Russian troops did not initially understand the scale of what Ukraine was doing. Some of those Ukrainian troops also said Russian soldiers appeared reluctant to report the Ukrainian advance accurately up their own chain of command.
Ukraine also used infiltration to keep the offensive moving. Instead of clearing every Russian position from the front, small groups slipped through gaps, bypassed occupied tree lines and established positions deeper in the Russian rear. Reconnaissance elements then cleared some of the isolated positions left behind. There is a strange symmetry there. Russia has repeatedly used small infiltration groups to muddy the frontline and appear in areas that look secure on a map. Ukraine was now using a similar idea against Russian positions, except Russia had already been doing it to them too.
The Frontline on the Map Wasn’t Always the Frontline on the Ground
Ukrainian personnel interviewed by Ukrainska Pravda said that when the second operation began, internal reporting had understated how deeply Russian troops had infiltrated in some sectors. UP reported Russian groups operating two to ten kilometers deeper than Ukrainian units had been led to expect. Ukrainian troops preparing to attack forward sometimes discovered Russian soldiers inside what was supposed to be their own rear. UP documented examples around Andriivka-Klevtsove, Kolomiitsi, Oleksiivka and the forest east of Velykomykhailivka. Before some Ukrainian units could continue attacking east, somebody first had to clear Russian positions behind them. That helps explain why liberated, retaken and cleared do not always describe exactly the same thing here. A Ukrainian unit can hold a road while Russian infantry hide in a nearby forest, and another small group can slip through a gap between established positions. The map eventually catches up, but the people on the ground have to sort out the mess first.
Then Russia Started Catching Up
Ukraine’s advantage from surprise wasn’t going to last forever. According to Ukrainian personnel interviewed by UP, Russian forces began reacting much more aggressively after the first few weeks of both offensive phases. The Russian Rubicon drone unit was rapidly transferred into the Oleksandrivka area, while Russian formations opposite the Ukrainian advance brought additional reserves forward. Russian troops also began mining roads and placing ambush drones near junctions where Ukrainian vehicles would be forced to slow down. Ukrainian units responded by creating dedicated drone crews to fly those roads, search for the waiting drones and destroy them before logistics vehicles moved through.
One Ukrainian UAV commander interviewed by UP said that after his vehicle became stuck during the spring mud, somewhere between 30 and 50 Russian drones were sent against it. That remains one soldier’s account rather than a number independently confirmed by the outlet, but it gives some idea of the pressure Ukrainian logistics were operating under. Every kilometer forward also made the road behind Ukrainian troops longer. Ammunition, food, fuel, batteries, replacement troops and drones all had farther to travel, while casualties had farther to come back.
Some Ukrainian Infantry Walked 20 Kilometers Before the Assault Started
UP’s Ukrainian sources described logistics routes stretching 10 to 20 kilometers or more in parts of the sector. One battalion commander said his infantry sometimes walked about 20 kilometers just to reach the line of contact, then they still had to assault. Rivers made the situation more difficult. The Oleksandrivka sector is crossed by several waterways, including the Vovcha River, and temporary crossings were vulnerable almost as soon as they appeared. One Ukrainian commander told UP some bridges or pontoons could be destroyed within roughly half an hour of being installed.

Ukrainian troops used boats where possible. UP obtained footage showing two paratroopers crossing one river in an inflatable boat with their equipment before continuing toward a clearing operation. Other soldiers went through the water themselves. According to one Ukrainian commander, troops who swam across had dry clothing dropped to them by drone on the other side. Some of these gains were made by troops who had already walked for hours or crossed a river before the assault even began.
The Offensive Is Moving in a Different Direction Now
That brings us back to October. Apostol said the first stage of the operation generally developed from north to south, while the current movement is running more from west to east. He did not identify where the newest movement is taking place. For now, Apostol’s statement tells us Ukraine says the offensive is still producing results, but not enough to independently map those newest gains. September gives us something firmer to work with.
September Shows the Front Was Still Moving
On September 23, ISW reported recent Ukrainian advances southeast of Oleksandrivka. Ukrainian military observer Kostyantyn Mashovets reported that Ukrainian forces had liberated Shevchenko, penetrated roughly 2.5 kilometers toward Burlatske, advanced north of Vilne Pole and reached northern Pavlivka. Mashovets assessed that Ukrainian forces had advanced roughly eight kilometers in the broader area since early August. Those are Mashovets’ battlefield assessments relayed by ISW, rather than territory independently confirmed in full by the institute.
A few days later, reporting from the Russian side added another layer. ISW reported on September 27 that Russian milbloggers acknowledged Ukrainian forces had retaken Perebudova east of Oleksandrivka. Those Russian sources also said Ukrainian troops had entered Komar, where fighting over control of the settlement was continuing. Russian milbloggers described the Piddubne-Myrne-Komar line as one of the places where Russian forces were having the greatest difficulty advancing. None of that tells us whether those settlements are among the unnamed locations Apostol referred to, but it does establish that Ukrainian offensive activity continued well beyond the summer.

Russia was still attacking too. ISW reported limited Russian offensive operations southeast of Oleksandrivka on September 29 and 30 without a confirmed Russian advance. The same pattern continued into October 1. That is only a snapshot. Russia can move reserves, Ukrainian logistics can become overstretched, weather can slow both sides, and a section of front moving today can stop next week. But as October begins, September reporting showed continued Ukrainian movement in the sector, including Russian-source acknowledgement of the loss of Perebudova and fighting around Komar.
Eight Months Later, the Offensive Is Still There
The Oleksandrivka campaign has survived the loss of initial surprise, heavier drone pressure and extended logistical lines. September reporting showed that the front was still moving after the larger spring and summer phases, while Russian sources acknowledged the loss of Perebudova and continued fighting around Komar. Apostol now says several additional settlements are already under Ukrainian control, while the publicly announced total could eventually increase by as many as ten. Until Ukraine identifies those locations and outside mapping catches up, the newest territorial claims remain Ukrainian military claims from an active operation.
But the broader timeline is much harder to miss. The Oleksandrivka offensive began in January, continued through two major offensive phases and was still producing battlefield movement during September. It survived Russian reinforcements and much heavier drone pressure, and the direction of the current push has changed as the campaign developed.

Kremlin's Fortress Belt Offensive Has Become Another Russian Graveyard

As the impact of Operation Vivaldi on Putin's battlefield dreams becomes even clearer, the result in terms of blood and iron is also more tangible.

It appears that the Russian assault on Ukraine's Fortress Belt has become a race to see which happens first: Ukraine giving way or Russia running out of people. There is also, looming over this situation, the specter of Trump losing his majorities in Congress, which would limit his ability to continue surreptitiously helping Putin anyway he can. Putin is a gambler and seems to believe that he can win this bet, especially as he tries to intimidate Europe with hybrid warfare attacks on commercial and industrial sites. But his problem goes back to the battlefield; in the digital age, everyone can see what is happening there and that his bet is being paid for with the blood of Russia's poorest and weakest, who are not getting the job done for him, despite their sacrifice. The Russian units involved came from the 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies, including the 3rd, 144th and 67th Motor Rifle Divisions and the 11th Tank Brigade, which shows how much Moscow had committed to the salient. Operation Vivaldi “disrupted the Russian military command’s plans to conduct a wide encirclement of the Fortress Belt from the Lyman and Dobropillya areas.” Russian forces lost 256 square kilometres in September. Russian casualties for September were 46,000, the highest monthly figure so far this year. Russian casualties are extraordinarily high, and higher than they were earlier this year.
President Zelenskyy visited the 3rd Army Corps in the Lyman sector on 30 September and discussed the next phase of Operation Vivaldi with its commander, Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi. The corps reports that the operation has retaken 176 square kilometres, inflicted more than 5,000 Russian casualties and captured 250 prisoners. Zelenskyy later told Reuters the area was around 140 square kilometres, and the Kyiv Independent reported 125, so the totals depend on who is counting and when.
Several other issues are worth noting about Operation Vivaldi.
Biletskyi described Russian units that “lost control and surrendered in groups, along with their officers, drone pilots, and artillerymen,” and prisoners on that scale suggest Russian command and control around Lyman collapsed. ISW confirmed previous assessments by me and others that Operation Vivaldi “disrupted the Russian military command’s plans to conduct a wide encirclement of the Fortress Belt from the Lyman and Dobropillya areas.”

President Zelenskyy described the results of Operation Vivaldi in terms of the broader ground campaign in the east, stating Ukrainian forces had “thwarted Russia’s plans to break through the rear of the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk” area, the core of Ukraine’s remaining defences in Donetsk Oblast. The key question is whether the 3^rd Corps can sustain its tempo, because a fourth phase is likely to need fresh infantry as well as more robots.
Interestingly, President Zelenskyy has described in a social media post how the Ukrainian ground forces wanted to conduct this offensive last year. He stated that:
Our military wanted to start this operation a year ago, but it was not that well prepared yet. Thank God, we decided to postpone it a bit, and now we have good results and fewer losses.
Finally, Zelenskyy singled out the combat robots being employed by Ukraine. “Replacing our soldiers with ground robotic systems whenever possible is a highly promising area at present,” he said, adding that this element made it possible to accomplish a great deal. Newsweek this week reported that Russian forces lost around 256 square kilometres in September and captured 176. Ukraine’s military listed Russian casualties for September at 46,000, the highest monthly figure so far this year. Zelenskyy’s total was 42,000. Regardless, average monthly Russian casualties are extraordinarily high, and higher than they were earlier this year.

Operation Vivaldi's Robots Were Cool, But the Big Win Was Tying It All Together

A lot of indisputably amazing, genius-level technologies and tactics came together to make Operation Vivaldi a success. But just like a composer or orchestra conductor, what makes it all work is the ability to weave all the disparate elements into a coherent whole.

And that is the real lesson of Vivaldi. The Russians can reverse engineer the technologies. But throughout this war, they have failed to demonstrate the flexible, adaptive leadership and coordination that leads to outcomes like Ukraine has achieved in the Lyman sector these past months. JL

Bomber drones carrying ground robots is a very clever trick. (But) Ukraine's 3rd Corps electronic-warfare units disrupted more than 20,000 Russian drone missions during Operation Vivaldi. The EW that helped blind the Russians to the entire offensive is a much bigger deal than the robots. Bigger still: how Ukraine was able to coordinate a combined arms operation built for the future - a version of robotic warfare that is already working. After the jamming, drones, decoys, robot bombs, artillery, and deception had done their work, the infantry moved in. The 3rd Army Corps combined EW, aerial drones, ground robots, armored decoys, deception, artillery, and infantry in one operation while adapting the plan as it unfolded. None of these things needed to be revolutionary by themselves. The point was getting them to happen together.

During Operation Vivaldi, I have to admit, I went into the story thinking the robots were the story.

It was hard not to. Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps had heavy bomber drones carrying kamikaze ground vehicles more than 10 kilometers behind Russian lines, setting them down where nobody expected an attack, and then letting the little terminators go hunting.
The corps called it a “world first…” That’s catnip for me.
The hook, “Ukrainian murder bots delivered by bomber drone behind enemy lines” is the equivalent of tempting me to snort a line of coke with Ryan Reynolds in the back of an Uber on our way to meet Mark Carney; how could I refuse?!
Then I found a number buried in the 3rd Army Corps’ own reporting that changed the hook for me: Its electronic-warfare units say they disrupted more than 20,000 Russian drone missions during Operation Vivaldi.
That was the moment I realized I had been chasing the shiny object.
The bomber drone carrying a ground robot is a very clever trick. The electronic-warfare campaign that helped blind a Russian force to the entire offensive operation, whose entire defensive system increasingly depends on drones, is a much bigger deal.
Bigger still, how Ukraine was able to coordinate what is essentially a combined arms operation built for the future, without Russia getting the initiative.
Now we have something worth digging into.
What happened north of Lyman
Since late spring, Russian forces had been grinding forward in northern Donetsk, using the now-familiar pattern of sending small groups through gaps, tree lines, ruined villages, and weak seams in Ukrainian positions around Lyman.
The 3rd Army Corps, commanded by Andrii Biletskyi, responded with a phased counteroffensive it keeps calling “seasons,” which, I presume, is a deliberate nod to eighteenth-century Italian violin music.
The first season cleared roughly 75 square kilometers of Russian infiltrators.
The second pushed Ukrainian forces back into Shandryholove and Derylove and secured Drobysheve.
The third phase, announced on September 28, retook Ridkodub, Nove, and Katerynivka. The corps says the total recovered area across all three phases reached 176 square kilometers, with more than 250 Russian soldiers captured and roughly 5,000 Russian casualties inflicted.
Russian military bloggers have also acknowledged Ukrainian advances back toward the Zherebets River, and ISW described parts of the operation as a limited mechanized maneuver supported heavily by drones and ground robots.
“Limited” is a useful word here.
One hundred seventy-six square kilometers isn’t exactly a Thunder Run. In fact, it’s a relatively small patch of ground.
But it’s also one of the few places in 2026 where a Ukrainian formation has managed to steal the initiative from Russian forces that had spent most of the year setting the tempo.
That makes the method more interesting to me than the acreage.
The electronic-warfare crews went after Russia’s drone network.
Heavy bomber drones carried Hryphon strike robots, built and operated by the NC13 unit, deep into the rear.
During the third phase, the 3rd Assault Brigade took two old Soviet BTR armored personnel carriers, converted them into unmanned vehicles, stuffed them with explosives, and sent them toward Russian positions near Nove and Katerynivka.
According to the corps, Russian troops initially thought reinforcements were arriving.
Ahem, they were not, in fact, reinforcements.
The BTRs drove into fortified positions and detonated.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces ran a deception operation designed to pull Russian reserves toward a false axis of attack.
The corps also claims it destroyed drone launch sites belonging to Rubicon, one of Russia’s most capable drone formations, and forced Rubicon elements to withdraw from the sector.
Then, after the jamming, drones, decoys, robot bombs, artillery, and deception had done their work, the infantry moved in.
God loves the infantry…
The corps summarized its philosophy during the operation with one sentence:
“Infantry wins wars, but we protect our infantry, so robots go toward the enemy first.”
For most of military history, somebody had to go first, and that somebody was usually a kid with a rifle.
Sure, you can dress the task up with doctrine, reconnaissance, suppressive fires, smoke, artillery, and every other tool an army possesses, but eventually somebody has to move into the contested space and find out what is actually there.
What Ukraine is experimenting with now is changing who, or what, gets exposed first.
Mykhailo Fedorov announced his Army of Robots project last week, complete with humanoid machines and a goal of getting a robot to kill a Russian soldier within six months.
Maybe he will.
Ukraine has certainly earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to making bizarre technology useful faster than anyone expected.
Vivaldi points toward a different version of robotic warfare, though, and it is already working.
Nobody waited for a humanoid. They used bomber drones, purpose-built strike robots, old Soviet armored vehicles, electronic warfare, deception, infantry, and whatever else solved the problem in front of them.
There is an old World War II comparison that fits here, with the usual warning that historical analogies are useful right up until writers start abusing them.
France didn’t enter the war in 1940 without tanks. It had a lot of them, and some French tanks were extremely well armored. Germany’s advantage came from how its forces were organized and how quickly they could coordinate movement, aircraft, artillery, communications, and armored units.
The machine by itself did not explain the outcome.
That is roughly how I am starting to think about Ukraine’s ground robots…
Putting tracks under an explosive isn’t new… Countries have been finding creative ways to send explosives toward people for several thousand years.
The interesting part is that the 3rd Army Corps appears to have combined electronic warfare, aerial drones, ground robots, armored decoys, deception, artillery, and infantry in one operation while adapting the plan as it unfolded.
And I keep finding the same pattern across Ukrainian weapons programs.
The weapons keep changing, yet Ukraine keeps approaching the development process in roughly the same way.
When I wrote about the MICH 2000 drone in August, the part I remembered was not the specifications. It was the SBU’s Alpha unit telling the manufacturer to stop testing and start fighting before the engineers thought the drone was ready. The first combat mission in October 2024 launched three drones. One was lost, and the other two missed.
Alpha approved production anyway.
That sounds insane until you understand SBU’s logic.
The mission produced information the engineers couldn’t get from another month of controlled testing. They now knew what failed under actual battlefield conditions, so they went back and fixed it.
I ran into the same thing while working on the jet-powered Shahed story last month.
Eight Ukrainian manufacturers had told officials during the previous winter that they had workable high-speed interceptor drones.
Then combat testing happened.
Most of them discovered problems with guidance, maneuverability, endurance, and basic operational simplicity.
Again, that sounds like failure if you are thinking about procurement as a process where a finished product eventually arrives after years of testing.
Ukraine increasingly treats combat itself as part of the test program.
This is often expensive, and occasionally brutal, but the feedback loop is incredibly fast.
Build something.
Put it in combat.
Find out what sucks.
Fix it.
Try again.
Vivaldi looks like that same pattern operating at a much larger scale.
Somebody figured out that a heavy bomber drone could carry a ground robot behind Russian lines. Somebody else looked at two old BTRs and decided they could become unmanned explosives and decoys. Electronic-warfare teams worked on disrupting the Russian drone network. Another part of the corps built a false attack axis convincing enough to pull enemy reserves away from the real one.
None of these things needed to be revolutionary by themselves.
The point was getting them to happen together.
Back in the Air Force, I learned pretty quickly that a good sensor only gets you so far. The real work was keeping the entire air picture synchronized while aircraft moved, plans changed, radios failed, and the other side constantly trying to fuck with you.
You need the right track in the right place, the right fighter looking at the right contact, the tanker where somebody expects it to be, radios working, identification sorted out, and somebody noticing when reality stops matching the plan.
The other side, meanwhile, is constantly trying to wreck that picture.
That is what makes the 20,000 disrupted Russian drone missions so interesting.
If the 3rd Army Corps’ figure is broadly accurate, Ukraine added its own robots to the battlefield while simultaneously degrading Russia’s ability to understand what was happening, all while preserving enough of its own picture to coordinate the offensive.
Seen in that context, the ground robot becomes one piece of a much larger operation rather than the thing that explains Vivaldi by itself.
The corps was trying to conduct the orchestra while somebody was smashing the Russians’ sheet music.
It’s very likely that Russia will copy the hardware
Fedorov made this point last week:
Russia, he said, “has learned to rapidly copy and scale military technologies,” which means Ukraine has to begin the next technology cycle before Russia finishes copying the current one.
That’s obviously true.
Russia copied and industrialized the Iranian Shahed.
It has copied Ukrainian drone concepts.
It learns from Ukrainian interception tactics, electronic warfare, and battlefield modifications.
If the Hryphon works well enough, the Russians will probably build something like it. If air-delivered ground robots prove useful, Russian engineers will try that too. Russia can probably reproduce most of the hardware eventually. But I think recreating the command culture and organization that allowed all of those systems to be used together may take a bit longer.
As the US military is well aware, buying the equipment is the easy part. A military still has to build the training, command relationships, and culture that let junior leaders use that equipment without waiting for permission every time somebody has a strange idea.
That sort of initiative takes years to build into an organization, and it is much harder to import than a drone design.
By the way, in the Air Force, they had a program that allowed anyone, even the lowest ranking airman, to submit an idea to improve a technical process, and if that process was adopted by the entire Air Force, that airman would receive a bonus of $100,000.
Back in the 2010s, that was quite a bit of money. These days, it will hardly get you a carton of eggs from Costco.
Russia has improved dramatically during this war, and I wouldn’t underestimate its ability to adapt. Still, its military has repeatedly struggled with the sort of lower-level initiative that Ukrainian units often seem far more comfortable exercising.
That may be one of the more durable advantages Ukraine can preserve, though there are obvious limits to what that can accomplish.
Ukraine is still short on infantry, while Russia retains more people, more artillery, and enormous industrial capacity.
One successful corps-level operation north of Lyman does not alter the arithmetic of the entire war, and the 3rd Army Corps’ casualty claims still need independent confirmation. Russia will also study every second of publicly released Vivaldi footage looking for ways to break the next iteration of the operation, and there is every reason to assume that process has already started.
What I would watch now is the fourth “season,” assuming the corps keeps the naming convention.
Do we see the same mix of electronic warfare, bomber drones, ground robots, decoys, and infantry, or does the toolkit change?
Do Russian drone units return with better resistance to Ukrainian jamming?
Do the Ukrainians modify the ground robots, expand the deception effort, or change how the heavy bomber drones approach the front after Russia has had time to study them?
It would also make sense for Russian forces to start hunting those bomber platforms more aggressively before they ever get the chance to deliver a robot behind the lines.
If I were trying to figure out where the next version of this war is coming from, I’d watch the units that are allowed to try strange ideas, screw some of them up, learn quickly, and get the next version back into combat before the Russians have fully figured out what happened.
Right now, the 3rd Army Corps looks like one of those formations.

What It Takes To Drop Ground Drones That Attack Behind Russian Lines

As the following article reveals, developing the technology and the tactics, as well as perfecting the planning and training, took time and practice. This process illustrates not just the idea, but the intensive work required to make such innovations successful at an operational level. JL

The new tactic involves deploying kamikaze UGVs - ground robots - deep behind enemy lines using heavy bomber drones. The "NC13" strike UGV unit of the 3rd Assault Brigade, which carried out this mission, has successfully carried out more than 100 similar operations, which included capturing Russian positions without deploying infantry, using only UGVs and drones. "We spent quite a long time developing the tactic and modifying the equipment because standard systems were not designed for this. The engineers spent a great deal of time making it work. The pilots had to learn how to operate with these systems and deploy them correctly. Our first operation went 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) deep behind enemy lines. The enemy started to panic because they did not understand what was happening or what struck them. They thought a sabotage and recon group had broken into their rear. As a result, they canceled the mechanized assault they had planned for that day."
In January of this year, the "NC13" strike UGV unit of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade tested a new tactic deep behind Russian lines. Since then, the unit has successfully carried out more than 100 similar operations, turning what began as an experiment into a proven combat system.
The new tactic was named "Gryphon" in honor of a service member from the unit who went missing in action in 2023 while carrying out a combat mission near Andriivka in the Donetsk region. It was in this area, near Bakhmut, that Oscar-winning Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov filmed the documentary "2000 Meters to Andriivka" during a different Ukrainian counteroffensive.
The concept behind the new tactic involves deploying kamikaze UGVs, essentially ground robots, deep behind enemy lines using heavy bomber drones. After landing, the robotic systems continue moving toward their targets and can be used to strike key positions, logistics, and personnel while also creating disruption in the enemy rear.
The "NC13" unit was also behind an operation that drew significant international attention about a year ago, when Ukrainian forces captured Russian positions without deploying infantry, using only UGVs and drones.
As a result, two Russian service members surrendered to the robotic systems, after which the machines escorted them to Ukrainian positions as prisoners of war.
Today, the new tactic is part of the Third Army Corps' large-scale operation known as "Vivaldi." Since the start of the offensive, Ukrainian forces have liberated 176 square kilometers of territory (68 square miles).
According to the Office of the President of Ukraine, Russian forces suffered more than 5,000 casualties, including those killed, wounded, and captured, during the first three stages of the operation. It is currently known that Ukrainian forces have taken 250 Russian service members as prisoners of war (POWs). The Third Army Corps separately reported 2,000 Russian personnel casualties during the latest stage alone.
Approximately 80% of logistics and 90% of wounded evacuation for Ukrainian troops during all three stages of the operation were carried out by unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs.
"NC13" commander Mykola Zinkevych, call sign "Makar," explains how the new "Gryphon" tactic works, how the idea of air-dropping ground robots emerged, what happened during the first operations, how Russian forces are reacting to the technology, and why he believes Ukraine is shaping the future of technological warfare.
He also discusses how Western partners are becoming less able to understand Ukrainian military technologies and, more broadly, the needs of modern warfare.
Can you please explain, in general, what this new tactic involves?
In general, this is a sabotage-operation tactic that was fully planned, developed, and implemented by the "NC13" strike unmanned ground systems unit of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.
The tactic is genuinely new and has no equivalent anywhere in the world because no one had previously deployed unmanned ground vehicles from unmanned aerial vehicles.
The concept itself is that, using heavy bombers, we drop small ground-based kamikaze systems deep into enemy territory, at a distance of 5 to 15 kilometers (3 to 9.3 miles). From there, we carry out different sabotage operations: eliminating enemy personnel, destroying logistics, and so on.

When did you begin using this tactic? Any first operation is essentially a test. How confident were you that it would work?
We carried out the first operation about eight months ago (in January 2026- UP).
We spent quite a long time developing the tactic itself and modifying the equipment because standard ground-based kamikaze systems are not designed for this kind of use.
The engineers spent a great deal of time making it work. The pilots also had to learn how to operate with these systems and deploy them correctly. The planning department, accordingly, spent a lot of time preparing the operation.
But when it worked for the first time, the excitement was incredible. Our first operation went 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) deep behind enemy lines. We deployed two ground-based kamikaze systems near the target, and from there, the systems themselves moved into the shelter.
It was an enemy staging point where personnel were brought in. They would stop there to rest before moving on to carry out their missions. We eliminated that staging point using two ground-based kamikaze systems.

What was the enemy's reaction? What did it look like from their side?
In fact, the enemy did not understand what had happened, what system had been used, what had struck them, or what tactic we were employing.
Even now, it remains a major surprise for them because we operate in different sectors within the Third Army Corps' area of responsibility.
We combine different technologies in order to change the rules on the battlefield.
We have been able to strike the enemy from the air at significant depth for quite some time. We have also been using unmanned ground vehicles to strike enemy forces for a while.
But this combination (UGV + UAV) allows us to operate at greater depth, in areas where the enemy does not expect to be reached and where they feel relatively safe. So we are going to take that freedom away from them.

How many such operations have been carried out so far?
More than one hundred. We always work systematically. If something works once, twice, or three times, we still do not consider it a fully established capability because it could be accidental.
But when something is carried out more than ten times, it becomes a systematic approach. We have SOPs, standard operating procedures, in place for this tactic: how to use it, where it can be implemented, and what its capabilities are.
It can be used for reconnaissance, mining deep behind enemy lines, striking targets, hunting moving enemy personnel, disrupting logistics, and more. We have fully developed this tactic, identified all of its capabilities, and now use it as a full-fledged tool on the battlefield.

War in general, and especially Russia's war against Ukraine, is a war of speed. Everything depends on who can come up with something new and adapt faster. Are the Russians already trying to do something similar?
I am confident that we are far ahead of the enemy. Even when it comes to the systematic use of strike unmanned ground vehicles on the battlefield, which we have been doing for about a year, the enemy is still far behind.
So when it comes to tactics like "Gryphon," which we are discussing today, there is still a very large gap between us and them.
But I would not rule out the possibility that, over time, the enemy will begin copying this approach and using similar methods.
In fact, during more than 100 successful missions, there have been many almost meme-like moments when the enemy had no idea what they were looking at and would actually approach the robots to inspect them.
There was one occasion when we managed to completely disrupt a Russian mechanized assault that had been planned for foggy weather conditions. At the time, we were actively targeting one of the enemy's logistics routes. We eliminated several personnel over the course of the day.
They started to panic because they did not understand what was happening. They thought a sabotage and reconnaissance group, or SRG, had broken through into their rear. As a result, they canceled the mechanized assault they had planned for that day.
So these small robots can create very significant disruption.
In general, there was serious panic among enemy forces at the depth where we were operating. And panic is actually very important because if we create panic within enemy ranks, they begin to have problems controlling their personnel. Soldiers start refusing to carry out missions, which then creates panic at the command level because commanders do not understand what is happening in their rear, and so on.
That creates destabilization, and all of that works in our favor.
Why exactly do they panic?
Even when you know what it is, you can become even more afraid. You do not know where it might be waiting for you, where it might drive, where it might catch up with you, and so on. So in some ways, it is even better when they know.
You know, now you have to watch not only the sky, but also the ground beneath your feet. Not just for mines, but because something might come after you.
There was one interesting intercepted communication where an enemy soldier reported to his commander that a "Baba Yaga" (russian military slang for heavy bomber drones - UP) had flown in, landed, then started driving and chasing them.
It was pretty funny to listen to.
But it did catch them in the end.

This tactic seems to have many advantages. Which one do you consider the most important?
- The absolute advantage of using any technology is that, first and foremost, we do not have to put people at risk. We preserve human lives.
For me, as the commander of a strike UGV unit and as a former infantryman, it is actually more important to preserve our own personnel, to protect Ukrainian infantrymen, assault troops, and soldiers, than it is to destroy the enemy. Destroying the enemy comes second.
And in fact, by destroying the enemy, we prevent them from advancing toward our forces and make life easier for our infantry. So above all, any technology helps us protect human life. Robots do not bleed, and human life is priceless. That is essentially our guiding principle throughout everything we do.
The next advantage, of course, is depth. The depth at which we can operate with these systems.
Yes, 10 to 15 kilometers (6.2 to 9.3 miles) is not the maximum range. Unfortunately, I cannot disclose the exact figures. But we are deployed and then continue moving very, very deep into enemy territory. The deeper we go, the more valuable, so to speak, the resources and targets we can destroy.
You touched a little on the future. Is there already a vision for how this technology could develop? I will not ask exactly how, but should we expect it to be scaled up further?
Yes. By the end of 2026, there will be many large-scale, exciting, and interesting stories, announcements, and new tactics from our unit.
We already have a number of newly implemented applications and tactics involving unmanned ground vehicles, (including the use of UGVs equipped with grenade launchers, which is also a new and unique tactic -UP).
It is simply not yet the right time to talk about them. And we have many more things planned. So we just need to wait a little longer.
Western countries have traditionally been considered leaders in military technology. You speak with foreign military officials. How well do they understand the technological breakthrough currently taking place in Ukraine?
I attended the Munich Security Conference in February and had the opportunity to speak with many foreign military officials, various partners, and government representatives.
In reality, they are very far behind. Absolutely.
They understand what we are talking about, what we are deploying, what we are using, and how it works. But they do not fully understand its importance and value on the battlefield, or just how much the battlefield itself has changed.
And I am more than certain that the rest of the world is lagging very, very far behind.
Even the technologies I see being introduced into militaries around the world are still quite far removed from what is actually being used on the battlefield between Ukraine and Russia.
Looking specifically at unmanned ground vehicles, I have seen their entire evolution on the front line, from 2024 until today.
We work, interact, and collaborate with many manufacturers. A great deal of equipment has been developed because we provided our expertise and doctrine.
I also have a certain number of systems produced by foreign manufacturers, and there is a very significant difference between them (Ukrainian and Western UGVs - UP).
We are not even talking about price, although the prices are extremely high. But in terms of actual battlefield use, Western systems still fall far short of the needs of the modern battlefield.

Are foreign partners reaching out to Ukrainian military personnel often enough for this kind of expertise? Is there interest in contributing to the development of these innovations?
I would say they do reach out, but not nearly as actively as they should. In my opinion, this is the kind of expertise people should be actively pursuing, not just occasionally asking, "So, what are you working on?"
No one knows what will happen in the world tomorrow. We live in a time when you never know what to expect.
If Ukraine can offer something to its partners, what can it receive from them in return?
Ukraine is the sword and shield of Europe. It is defending not only itself and its own future, but the future of the entire continent.
So every time other countries help us, they should understand that they are not only helping Ukrainians. They are also helping themselves.
Right now, Ukraine especially needs effective and timely weapons deliveries from its partners. First and foremost, this means air defense systems capable of protecting Ukrainian cities from attacks, as well as heavy weapons, including artillery and armored vehicles, that can help Ukraine regain the initiative on the battlefield.
Of course, this support must always be justified. Because Ukraine is doing everything possible to defend its territory, - liberate occupied land, and protect the future of the country and the nation, - that is why all of these processes and technologies have emerged.
The battlefield has effectively become a testing ground for innovation. On the one hand, that is a positive thing.
But on the other hand, it is deeply tragic, because every such achievement comes at a price. And that price is not paid in money. It is paid with the lives of Ukrainian service members and people who should have been the future of the Ukrainian nation.
History has seen many cases where a promising technology or a major breakthrough emerged, but it was overlooked, underfunded, or never scaled up...
This is not something that appeared only today. It is something that has been developed and planned over a period of time, has already been implemented for quite a while, and is constantly being modernized.
