Lucy Torres-Gomez credits ballroom dancing for staying fit

Lucy Torres-Gomez can survive an entire day lazing around inside the house. The soft-spoken host attributes much of this fact to her privileged background, growing up in the sleepy town of Ormoc in Leyte where time is practically sluggish compared to the fast paced city lifestyle.

Being married to actor Richard Gomez automatically earned Lucy instant ticket to the glitzy world of show business and made her a bonafide, though reluctant, celebrity with endorsement deals, television shows and even a ballroom dance record coming her way.

Much has changed in Lucy's lifestyle ever since she and Goma (Richard's nickname) tied the knot on April 28, 1998. Aside from settling in Manila for good, Lucy has been attending to showbiz commitments left and right while juggling her time as a fulltime wife to Richard and mom to their only daughter Juliana.

LEARNING THE ART. For someone who confessed being prone to that so-called "tamad days" and who loves to eat and try out dishes, one can easily conclude that Lucy is truly blessed to maintain her slight frame despite the absence of the usual workout routine popular nowadays.

But then not everyone is lucky enough to be given a show where one is required to dance non-stop several days of the week.

"Actually I'm lucky lang because I need to dance for the show regularly. So in a week talagang I have rehearsals," said Lucy in a recent interview marking the release of her debut ballroom dance album.

Lucy expressed discomfort with the notion that she is the face of ballroom dancing here in the country, stating that she is "far from good." Learning the art of dancing, according to her, is a continuous learning process given its the wide variety of genres.

"I like to [learn] Rumba and Cha Cha," revealed Lucy, who described these dance types as two of the hardest to learn and apply.

"It looks easy kasi the way the old people do it 'yong pamarcha-marcha lang. Pero the real Cha Cha is magical... It's sexy and it needs a lot of energy, madaming pitik. The more I got exposed to the world of ballroom dancing and the more I saw the real dancers do it the proper way, ang ganda pala ng Cha Cha. It's really beautiful."

Smart Parenting magazine editor-in-chief Mia Fausto-Cruz sat down with the radiant Lucy Torres-Gomez to discuss Lucy’s thoughts and stories on marriage, parenting and celebrating the holidays. Here are a few of Lucy’s nuggets of wisdom:

On her parenting style:

“When I think of my parenting style, it pops out when the situation calls for it. I don’t sit down and foresee na ‘when this happens this is what I’ll do’. I’d deal with it when it’s there na lang,”
“I learned, in terms of parenting, that I shouldn’t impose my dreams on Juliana. I want her to be the person that God designed her to be.”

Her wish for Juliana:

“If I could make [Juliana’s] life less complicated; eliminating some of those little fears, I’d be so happy.”

Her wish for herself:

“I wish I could dance everyday. I don’t have the time to dance as often as I want to.”

On nurturing her marriage:

“You have to nurture the romance with the husband. Part of that is taking care of yourself.”

On New Year’s resolutions:

“I really don’t have resolutions. I just always have a wish list at the start of the New Year, not just one thing. It’s a series of things that I would want to do within a year, whether it’s something big or something small. I don’t give myself a deadline. I’m fluid.”

On Christmas:

“I really love Christmas! It’s one of my favorite seasons. It’s really the flurry of activities that comes with Christmas, like all the wrapping. I love wrapping kasi talaga.”

The date: Our photo shoot was taken on the fateful day that Pacquiao beat Cotto after 12 rounds, November 15.
On Pepe Smith: Lucy saw the photo of Pepe Smith taken by Wyg Tysmans gracing one of the studio walls and exclaimed, “Si Pepe Smith ba ‘yan?!” When we answer in the positive, she recalls, chuckling, “He was a guest on our show [Shall We Dance] once. He was drunk! But he was such a professional when the show started!”

I remember a conversation I had with Mia Pascual of Pascual Laboratories sometime last year. She mentioned in passing that she painted the lobby of their building a happy, sunshine yellow, not because the existing paint was chipping off but because she wanted people — their employees especially — to feel good and cheery the moment they walked through the doors.

I remember that part of our conversation distinctly because I liked the idea of color having a positive effect on one’s mood, and ultimately in the workplace as we all know how that can translate into productivity. That resonated very well with me. I am happy that there are big bosses like her who look into seemingly random details in an effort to make employees feel good about themselves and their jobs.

Let me just say this: there is nothing shallow about making the best of your living and working space. It is not a useless expense. In QTV 11’s The Sweet Life, we tape at the old GMA studio two full days a week. We start in the morning and finish well after midnight. That is over 12 hours of being cooped up in there. We have been reporting there week after week for almost three years now. It feels like home to us and whatever is there that is not quite polished we have learned to accept and live with. Let me give you two words to give you an idea of how old that building is: Julie Vega. That was where the late Julie Vega used to tape Analiza!

Lucy Torres Gomez: Feminine but not Frou-Frou

MANILA, Philippines - The Gomez family has very definite ideas about fashion. Lucy Torres-Gomez, the former Ormoc native who currently hosts a show on QTV while juggling duties as a mother, housewife, STAR columnist and sometime jewelry designer (she recently launched a fine jewelry line under the Jul Dizon label), positively loathes animal prints.

“I hate it,” she says. “I’ll never wear it.”

Not even if her favorite designer deemed it a must-have? “Not even if Donna Karan came out with a complete collection,” she says, namedropping one of her favorite tastemakers. “I still wouldn’t touch it.”

Why all the animosity for one of fall’s biggest trends? Lucy takes a moment to consider her antipathy for animal skin. “It’s just so flashy, like you want everyone to look at you,” she explains. “That is definitely not me.”

Meanwhile, husband Richard detests gladiators, the women’s shoe that took footwear companies by storm since its emergence a few years ago — particularly the knee-high variety. “Don’t get me started on it,” he says, shaking his head.

What about Juliana? “She favors really clean silhouettes,” says Lucy. “I normally have to take her shopping with me because if I get something she doesn’t like, she won’t wear it.”

Fashion has always played a pivotal role in the Gomez’s lives. Considered showbiz royalty, the couple has graced more than a few Bench shows with some startling finale numbers and has made a living endorsing beauty and fashion labels. So it’s only natural that the family gravitates towards fancy duds.

“Richard likes girly-girl dresses for me,” says Lucy, who prefers designer Joey Samson for his sharp and modern aesthetic. “His craftsmanship is so clean,” she exclaims. “And I like that his dresses aren’t too sweet.”

Lucy grew up obsessing about fashion. Ordering the latest magazines like Seventeen, which would take months to ship from the US to her province, kept her up to date on the latest trends. Her mother encouraged her to visit the town dressmaker, who could recreate her favorite looks from fabric to finish.

Though she swore she’d never wear acid-wash jeans again, the current crop emerging from the likes of Balmain are slowly changing her mind. “Now that I’m seeing them again, they look pretty good,” she says. The more subtle acid wash and trim silhouette keep the style from being too over the top, a quality Lucy doesn’t particularly admire.

Today, her growing collection of local designer dresses and high-end purses are a testament to her affection for apparel and her increasing sense of progressive style.

“I used to be a conservative dresser, then I met this guy who loved pink and orange,” Lucy says. “Richard is pretty adventurous — he likes to shop at Paul Smith. It occurred to me I should try color. I haven’t looked back since.”

Describe your typical day.

I wake up in time for brunch, or lunch, head off to a yoga or dance class and am home in time to welcome Juliana back from school. She tells me about her day and then we have merienda together. Lately, we have been so addicted to yogurt so we always have that as our snack. Fro-yo from Hobbes and Landes is our current favorite although the rest (Lulu Belle, Yogurbud, etc.) is just as good. Dinner is always a long, lovely meal. Our house is always open so at any given time a handful of friends will join us. Richard loves to cook also, Juliana and I love to bake, so there are a lot of reasons to linger in the kitchen. We tuck Juliana into bed early if it is a school day, but we get up again once she is asleep to resume activities (I do my desk work, Richard works on his laptop or tinkers with his fishing lures, making knots here and there). Before we finally call it a night, we normally squeeze in a midnight snack, usually a salad or scrambled eggs and wheat toast. The nature of our work does not require us to work every day, so taping days are the only ones that are really structured. The rest of the week is pretty fluid. During the weekend we normally catch a movie.

Define your personal style.

Feminine, but not frou-frou. Classic, I guess you could say. I just want to look put-together and comfort is key. I am very definite about what I will and won’t wear, and I always trust my instincts. Even if it looks right but does not feel right, I’ll take it off and change into something else.

Did working in showbiz change the way you normally dress?

It made me braver, I guess, in terms of accepting change and embracing new styles and current trends, but having said that, my choices are always grounded by my own personal sensibilities. What’s nice about showbiz, though, is that when you feel like dressing up you can be unapologetic about your choices, and there always will be this or that event you can wear an outfit to.

What gives you a sense of fulfillment?

The close ties that color my most important relationships — Richard, Juliana and I are really friends, even if we are a family. I am very close to each member of my immediate family, with my parents and three siblings. I also enjoy a sincere, gentle bond with my tight circle of friends.

Work gives me fulfillment, too, for the most part. There are tough days, yes, but the greater mercy, even with all that, is that I am aware that I have a job I truly enjoy, a job that makes me feel alive. That in itself is a big blessing.

What do you keep on your bedside table?

Smith’s Rosebud Salve, statues of my favorite saints (they are my intercessors), lots of books, a notepad and pen — the latter because I get all sorts of ideas (and quiet reminders about things I need to do around the house!) as the night deepens and I don’t want to lose any of them.

Who, in your opinion, is emblematic of classic style?

The usual suspects: Jackie O, Grace Kelly, Princess Diana, Wallis Simpson.

If your life was made into a movie, who do you think should play you?

That thought never crossed my mind. I’ll have to get back to you on that.

What five pieces define your everyday style?

A pretty dress, skinny pants, slouchy top, Karma or Lululemon separates, long cardigan (I always like keeping warm, and I like throwing it on to make something dressy just a little bit more casual) and ballet flats. Sorry, that’s six.

Is there an item in your closet you cherish the most?

I am very sentimental, so I have stuff I still keep even if I no longer wear it: the shirt I wore when Richard proposed to me, a red shirt my brothers gave me when they were but little boys for which they pooled their allowance to buy, a Bench top I have had since I was in college and a tattered blue jacket that kept me warm one very sad night.

Do you have any fundamental rules of dressing?

I dress to please myself. Like I said, always going by what feels and looks right by me. I never want to dress up feeling pressured to make it to some list or conform to the hottest trend, whatever that may be. Should any of the two eventually happen, it will be purely incidental.

What was your style as a kid?

I’ve always enjoyed fashion, even as a little girl — watch all those movies, fall in love with the dresses (from The Sound of Music to The King and I) and I would have the local seamstress copy it for me. Mommy was very indulgent that way. We always had very pretty dresses, and my sister and I would wear matching cuts and prints in different colors.

What is the one purchase you cherish the most?

Currently, my ivory pieces, because they are so hard to find now!

Whose closet would you most like to raid?

A closet overflowing with Donna Karan and Gucci; Liz Taylor’s jewelry box.

What would you never be caught dead in?

Animal prints!

Best sartorial advice from your parents?

Mommy and Lola Carmen always swore by good jewelry to make any outfit rock. I never stopped believing that.

What is your no-fail outfit?

A pretty dress. Or skinny pants, a nice slouchy top and beautiful stilettos. Paul Smith or Ben Sherman shirts.

What’s your fave place to shop?

Online! And for absolutely beautiful things, like at Anthropologie (www.anthropologie.com). I can stay there for hours, just going around and around.

Your best shopping secret?

Still online. Sometimes Neiman Marcus has this thing called the Midday Dash. If you’re lucky enough to see the notice (and it only lasts for a few hours), there are great deals to be had!

Most unforgettable present you’ve received?

The diamond hoop earrings my Lola Carmen gave me. When we were little girls, all of our female cousins wanted it, and in an attempt to be objective and fair she promised, on a whim I suspect, to give it to whoever could guess whom she would end up marrying. On a whim also, since he was my forever crush, I said Richard Gomez (who I had not yet met at that time, this was in the early ’80s, I met Richard in ’93). Lola Carmen gave me those earrings a month before I married Richard.

Most outrageous purchase?

None. I would never buy it if it were so outrageous. I wouldn’t be able to sleep, or live with myself for two weeks.

Priciest bauble you acquired?

Fine jewelry is always pricey but if it were a tossup between exquisite frocks (with the matching exquisite price tag) and good jewelry, in a heartbeat I would go for the latter. Time will always prove it to be more valuable.

Silliest thing you bought?

Not a silly thing, but a silly habit. If I like something I have a tendency to buy it in all the colors available. Sometimes it turns out to be a wise decision, but there are times when I look at some of them, with their price tags still on many years later, and I can’t help but ask myself, What was I was thinking? I always say I’ll never do that again and I sort of succeed — until, just recently, I bought a top in all four colors. But the fit was so nice and the cut so beautiful, I can wear it forever. Here I go again.
