A Conversation with Famed Headshot Photographer & Expression Coach Chris Gillett on Trust, Authenticity, and the ‘Visual Handshake’

In a digital-first business environment, first impressions are often formed long before a conversation ever begins. Profiles, thumbnails, and headshots have become the modern handshake. They signal credibility, effort, and trustworthiness in a matter of seconds.

As artificial intelligence tools make it easier than ever to generate polished images, a growing question is emerging across professional circles. At what point does convenience begin to erode authenticity.

To explore this shift, I spoke with Chris Gillett, a nationally-regarded headshot specialist and expression coach who works with executives, attorneys, and entrepreneurs to refine what he calls the visual handshake. His perspective cuts through the surface-level appeal of AI-generated images and examines what they may be signaling beneath the polish.

Below is a bit of our conversation.

Q: You describe a moment where something felt off when viewing an AI headshot. What stood out to you?

A: I was in the middle of exchanging LinkedIn messages with a young woman who had pitched her company’s services to me when I got a weird feeling. I wasn’t sure she was real. Her headshot was polished. Good lighting. Clean background. But it almost looked too perfect. It was like a Stepford wife drifting into the uncanny valley. It felt off, almost like a scam. It felt so off-putting that I moved on without them. My reaction wasn’t analytical, it was instant and automatic.

Q: You say a headshot is more than just an image. What role does it really play?

A: Your headshot is not a decoration. It’s a signal. It’s fine to ask if you like your headshot. You should. The more important question, however, is what impression is it making on the people who see it. In other words, what is it signaling? Because people don’t study your photograph they react to it. In my example above, the woman’s headshot was signaling inauthenticity.

Q: What message do AI-generated headshots send in a professional context?

A: Look, I’m a headshot photographer so I obviously have a very heavy bias in this situation. Years ago when I finally got a good headshot of myself it changed how I felt about myself. It closed my self-acceptance gap to a manageable level. Doing that for other people became highly addictive and I still love it like it’s brand new. Having said that, an AI headshot signals low effort. It tells me that you are a low effort, path of the least resistance person. In a hiring or business context, people rarely assume that’s the only place you cut corners. This isn’t the type of person I want to do business with or hire.

Q: How should professionals think about first impressions when choosing a headshot?

A: Remember that it is great to ask whether you like your headshot or not, but it is even more important to ask what it signals. Do you look confident, like you are good at what you do? Do you look likable, like a person I would enjoy working with? Does the ratio of confidence to liability need to be weighted in favor of one or the other? When I work with clients these are things that we deliberately craft to make the best first impression for them. With AI headshots people are typically only asking does this resemble me closely enough and do I like it.

Q: You make a strong comparison between AI images and trust. Why is authenticity so critical?

A: I sure hope you wouldn’t catfish somebody on a dating app. Why in the world would it be acceptable to do it in business? We all know that we tend to do business with people that we like and trust. How can I trust you if your digital handshake is fake? Trust is fragile and first impressions either build it or quietly erode it. If you’re not willing to show me your real face, it tells me something about your level of candor and confidence. If you are a high-achieving person, somebody who works hard, is disciplined, and has achieved real personal growth, it seems like a crime against nature to dilute that into a computer-generated hallucination of what you really look like. I try to take good care of myself and to some extent my face reflects that. I love it when I can see it in my headshots. Your face is a scoreboard of your habits. Why would you replace it with fiction?

Q: What is lost when someone chooses an AI-generated image over a real photograph?

A: I find it hard to imagine someone feeling real pride in an AI generated image of themselves. That would be weird. I love it when my clients look at themselves in their headshots and feel proud just as I did when I got that first good headshot of myself. If you think that a real photograph looks better than you typically look, congratulations that’s the best version of yourself. If you think that an AI headshot looks better than you typically look, you are presenting a version of yourself that isn’t a real. I’d trade a dozen fake headshots for one real, good one as it is honest and intentional.

Q: Is there ever a place for AI headshots?

A: I understand that for some people who are tight on time and resources, fake pictures might be a good solution for certain situations, but for me and for the type of people I admire it is bizarre. Unfortunately, some people are just not going to get it. I have a friend who used to do network news. She is very smart and media-savvy. A few months ago on LinkedIn I saw that she had posted an AI photograph of herself. I texted her catfisher. She said I know, but with a little bit of makeup and good lighting it’s not too far off. I told her if you really think that, you’re not catfishing me, you are catfishing yourself.

As AI continues to reshape how professionals present themselves online, the temptation to optimize appearance is only growing. Yet as Gillett’s perspective makes clear, the real currency in business remains unchanged. Trust, credibility, and authenticity are still what drive connection.

In a world of increasingly polished digital personas, the question is no longer whether your image looks good. It is whether it feels real. Because in the end, your headshot is not just a photo. It is a signal. And people are paying attention.

“Cheers to 30 years” is more than a celebratory tagline for the Las Olas Wine and Food Festival. It is a reflection of three decades of culinary excellence, community connection, and philanthropic impact that continues to define one of South Florida’s most anticipated annual events. As the festival returns on Friday, April 24, 2026, Las Olas Boulevard will once again transform into what organizers describe as a “culinary playground,” spanning SE 6th Avenue through SE 11th Avenue and delivering a fully immersive tasting experience from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., with VIP access beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Presented by the American Lung Association, the event has become “Greater Fort Lauderdale’s longest-running charitable wine and food festival,” bringing together food, wine, culture, and purpose in a single, high-energy evening. For 30 years, the community has gathered to “sip, savor, and support a healthier future,” with 100 percent of proceeds benefiting lung health programs, advocacy, and research.

Below are ten expansive reasons why this year’s milestone celebration stands out as a must-attend experience.

A Pearl Anniversary Celebration Rooted in Legacy
The 30th anniversary marks what organizers call “three decades of unforgettable moments in support of a meaningful cause.” This milestone is not simply commemorative. It is experiential. The event leans into its origins with a 1990s-themed celebration that “transports guests back to 1996,” blending nostalgia with a modern, elevated execution that reflects how the festival has evolved.

A Boulevard Transformed Into a Culinary Playground
For one extraordinary night, Las Olas Boulevard becomes a fully curated event space. Guests move through multiple tasting pavilions, lounges, and activations that create a seamless flow of experiences. The design allows for “all the sips, samples, mixing, and mingling one can do,” reinforcing the festival’s reputation for accessibility and abundance.

More Than 40 Restaurants Delivering Signature and New Creations
The culinary backbone of the event features “more than 40 premier restaurants from the Greater Fort Lauderdale area hosting pop-up stations along the boulevard.” This lineup blends established favorites and emerging names, including Timpano, Casa Sensei, Ocean Prime, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, Sixty Vines, American Social, RA Sushi, Mastro’s Ocean Club, La Mexicana Taco Bar, Wilder, and The Federal. Each brings a distinct flavor profile, ensuring that no two bites feel the same.

A Global Wine and Spirits Portfolio Featuring 200+ Selections
Wine lovers are invited to “sip their way through exclusive pours, wines from around the world, and limited release bottles,” with more than 200 domestic and international wines and spirits featured across the festival. Curated by Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits, the offerings include premium labels and widely recognized brands, creating a tasting experience that spans regions, styles, and price points.

The Premium Wine Garden Elevates the Experience
The Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Premium Wine Garden, hosted by Ombelle Fort Lauderdale, returns as a focal point for elevated tasting. Guests enjoy “exclusive pours” alongside curated bites from Shooters Waterfront, creating a refined environment for deeper exploration of premium wines.

VIP Access That Begins Before the Festival Opens
The Grand Cru VIP ticket transforms the evening into a layered, multi-phase experience. It begins with a “VIP Kick-Off Pre-Party at the Riverside Hotel from 5:30 to 7 p.m.,” featuring premium bites, cocktails, and a waterfront setting presented by Florida Power and Light and Amerant Bank. VIP guests also receive early entry to the festival, gaining access to tasting pavilions 30 minutes before general admission.

Exclusive VIP Wine Garden Access and Premium Tastings
From 7 to 9 p.m., VIP guests enjoy private access to the Premium Wine Garden, where they can “sip, sample, and indulge in premium wines before anyone else.” Past participating wineries have included Caymus Vineyards, Terlato Wine Group, Chateau Ste. Michelle, and Freixenet Mionetto, reinforcing the elevated nature of this experience.

A 90s-Themed VIP Lounge That Brings the Energy
New for 2026, the VIP experience introduces a “throwback-themed oasis celebrating the festival’s roots in 1996,” complete with specialty cocktails such as Manhattans, Cosmos, and Appletinis, along with a nostalgic soundtrack designed to keep “the energy high and the dance floor moving.” The lounge also offers dedicated seating, creating a balance between high-energy entertainment and relaxed social space.

Beverage Diversity Beyond Wine
In addition to wine, the festival showcases a wide range of spirits and beer offerings. Guests can explore selections including Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Aperol, Espolón Tequila, Jim Beam, and Jameson Irish Whiskey, along with craft beer participants such as Stella Artois, Kona, Goose Island, and Wicked Weed. Additional spirit brands such as Aspen Vodka, Flecha Azul Tequila, Copalli Rum, and WhistlePig Whiskey further expand the tasting experience.

A Purpose-Driven Event With Community Impact
At its core, the festival remains grounded in its mission. “100% of proceeds benefit the lifesaving mission of the American Lung Association,” supporting efforts to improve lung health, advance research, and advocate for clean air. Organizers underscore the importance of this mission with a simple reminder that resonates throughout the event. “If you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.”

Beyond the tastings, the Las Olas Wine and Food Festival reflects a broader narrative of community, culture, and connection. It is a place where local businesses, culinary talent, and global beverage brands converge in a setting that feels both celebratory and purposeful.

From its early beginnings in 1996 to its current status as a premier culinary event, the festival has consistently evolved while maintaining its core identity. This year’s 30th anniversary edition captures that evolution in full, delivering an experience that is as dynamic as it is meaningful.

For attendees, the takeaway is clear. This is not simply a night of food and wine. It is a curated journey through flavor, culture, and community impact, set against one of South Florida’s most iconic backdrops. And for those who return year after year, it is also a reminder of why this event continues to matter.

From glistening skyline views and thoughtfully appointed waterfront suites to the elevated Cuban-inspired cuisine of Caña restaurant, this pristine Hyatt hotel delivers a complete Magic City experience

Miami rewards location. In Brickell, location can define the whole stay. You are either plugged into the district’s pace or watching it from the sidelines. Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami gets that distinction right. Opened in 2018 on Brickell Bay Drive, the 208-room hotel gives you direct access to one of the City’s most active neighborhoods while still making space for something many urban properties never quite deliver: breathing room, water views, and a sense that the hotel itself has a point of view.

Brickell has evolved quickly over the last decade. Glass towers rise above Biscayne Bay. Global finance firms share blocks with rooftop bars, destination restaurants, and luxury retail. The rhythm here is fast and deliberate. A traveler staying in this district needs a hotel that understands that tempo while still giving guests space to reset at the end of the day.

Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami leans into that balance.

The property sits steps from Brickell City Centre and the Financial District, placing guests within walking distance of the neighborhood’s core energy. From here, you can move easily through Downtown Miami, the Port of Miami, the Kaseya Center, and loanDepot Park. Wynwood, the Design District, Little Havana, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables are short drives away. Miami International Airport is nine miles from the hotel, while Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport sits 29 miles north.

The hotel itself was built with a clear intention. Give guests a vantage point over the city while keeping them connected to it.

Craig Haas, Area Director of Operations and acting General Manager of Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami, believes the building’s orientation plays a major role in the guest experience.

“Our proximity and convenience to Brickell City Centre, the Financial District, and Biscayne Bay are huge selling points, but there is so much to appreciate about the hotel itself as well,” he says. “Hyatt Centric Brickell has some of the most stunning views in this city because of where we are situated on the Bay, and the design of this hotel really capitalizes on that.”

Every guest room includes a private balcony. Many overlook Biscayne Bay. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors bring in natural light and open the room directly to the skyline outside. Suites extend the effect further with panoramic windows that frame the city from multiple angles.

Space matters here. The rooms are intentionally generous for a lifestyle property in a dense urban neighborhood. Leisure travelers often arrive eager to explore Miami’s cultural districts and nightlife. Business travelers frequently work between meetings in their zone-spaced room. The design supports both patterns without compromise.

Technology quietly supports the experience. USB charging ports, streaming entertainment, smart lighting, and digital climate controls create a frictionless environment. Bathrooms include upgraded personal care products, Drybar hair dryers, and BeeKind bath amenities.

Step outside the room, and the experience expands vertically.

The nineteenth floor rooftop deck is where the hotel fully reveals its perspective on Miami. A heated outdoor pool sits beside a hot tub and a broad terrace lined with cabanas. Guests order cocktails and light bites from the rooftop lounge while the skyline stretches across Biscayne Bay.

Haas admits this space is the one he returns to most often.

“What stands out to me most about Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami is how well the property uses its physical space to elevate the guest experience,” he explains. “Every room includes a private balcony, which is a rare advantage in this part of Miami and gives guests a real sense of connection to the city and the Bay. The feature I personally appreciate most is the rooftop pool overlooking Biscayne Bay.”

The atmosphere shifts noticeably after sunset.

“When the sun goes down, the lights of the bustling City turn on, and you can take in all the beautiful night scenery,” Haas continues. “The reflections across the water and the steady glow of the skyline create a calm, almost cinematic view that feels completely different from the daytime energy. It’s a moment where the City feels both alive and peaceful.”

Inside the building, the hotel offers additional amenities designed for travelers who expect convenience without excess. A 24-hour fitness center includes strength training equipment along with space for stretching and yoga. High-speed Wi-Fi runs throughout the property. Valet parking, laundry services, and pet-friendly accommodations ensure longer stays remain comfortable.

For corporate gatherings and celebrations, the hotel offers more than 12,000 square feet of meeting space. Two main venues sit on the 19th floor and open toward sweeping views of both the city skyline and Biscayne Bay. Indoor and outdoor configurations allow events for up to 300 guests while maintaining a sense of openness.

The hotel’s culinary anchor sits just above the street.

Caña Restaurant and Lounge occupies the second floor and acts as the central engine of the property’s food and beverage program. The restaurant draws on Cuban culinary traditions while introducing contemporary touches that reflect Miami’s international dining culture. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch, and happy hour all run through the kitchen. Even the rooftop bar is supported by the Caña culinary team.

The restaurant has already earned strong recognition. In 2025 Caña received the Gold Winner designation for Best Cuban Restaurant in the Miami-Dade Favorites Awards presented by the Miami Herald.

The kitchen is led by Executive Chef William Milian.

Milian’s culinary story begins in Havana, where he grew up in a large household where multiple generations shared meals and daily life around a single kitchen. Those experiences shaped his view that cooking should be collaborative and communal.

At 23, he defected from Cuba and eventually built a career in Miami kitchens. His path included years working through the ranks at Two Dragons restaurant at the Sonesta Key Biscayne before formal culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in Miami. Along the way, he worked with influential chefs including Michael Psilakis and José Andrés.

At Caña he brings those influences together while staying grounded in Cuban heritage.

“We’re grateful that our chef, William Milian, has such a strong connection to traditional Cuban food while also being able to innovate,” Haas says. “We have classic dishes such as Filete de Pescado a la Plancha, Vaca Frita, Masas de Puerco Frita, and Pollo Asado, but we also offer a plant-based Picadillo a la Habanera Vegano and creative small plates like Pulpo con Papas en Mojo Verde, and Vieras con Ají Amarillo with truffle oil.”

Dining here is intentionally social.

One highlight is the brunch board designed for groups. The large presentation includes eggs Benedict, pancakes, French toast, smoked salmon, avocado toast, bacon, and breakfast potatoes arranged on a single board meant to be shared across the table.

Guests can also play Cuban dominoes while enjoying cocktails and cigars. The experience creates a distinctly Miami evening inside the heart of Brickell.

The restaurant continues to introduce new programming, including a Cuban Classic three-course dinner offering traditional flavors and a beverage for forty dollars.

Haas also has a favorite dish.

“My favorite dish at Caña is the Lunch Bowl,” he says. “It perfectly captures the restaurant’s Cuban heritage and commitment to authentic island flavors. Our chef does a phenomenal job with slow-cooked meats, citrus marinades, rice, beans, and fresh vegetables. It’s vibrant and satisfying and tells the story of the culture behind it.”

Beyond the hotel walls, the property stays closely tied to the community. The team hosts an annual holiday event where families can visit with Santa. The hotel partners with the local LGBTQ Chamber and regularly organizes events supporting nonprofit organizations, including Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives.

Recognition continues to follow the property as well. Hyatt Centric Brickell Miami was ranked among the Top Hotels in Miami for 2026 by U.S. News and World Report.

Still, the hotel’s strongest argument may simply be perspective.

Stand on your balcony early in the morning and watch Biscayne Bay reflect the first light of the skyline. Return later in the evening when Brickell’s towers glow across the water. The district moves fast, but the view reminds you that Miami also knows how to pause.

Some hotels place you near the city.

This one places you inside it.

Enterprise AI has reached an inflection point. Global spending is accelerating past 300 billion dollars. Generative models dominate headlines. Every board deck now features artificial intelligence as a strategic pillar. Yet the uncomfortable truth remains. Most companies still cannot trace AI investment to durable earnings impact.

McKinsey finds that while nearly nine in ten companies are investing in AI, only about four in ten can trace any measurable EBIT impact — and most of those gains account for less than five percent of profit, suggesting that a large share of today’s AI spending remains experimental rather than economically productive. Gartner has repeatedly warned that the majority of AI projects fail to deliver sustained business value without disciplined governance and operational integration. Leaders feel the tension. Investors demand capital efficiency. Boards ask harder questions. Where is the return. When does it show up. What risk have we introduced along the way.

Mamatha Chamarthi does not approach these questions as a theorist. She answers them as an operator who has delivered at scale. She scaled a $23 billion-dollar global software business across 14 brands at Stellantis. She led Elevate AI at Goodyear and drove 100 million dollars in measurable value within 90 days. Her track record is rooted in industrial systems, not innovation theater.

Transformation is not PowerPoint. It is operational. It is financial. It is behavioral, Chamarthi says. AI without cost savings is just another tech investment.

Her framing resonates because it speaks directly to the P&L. She argues that most AI programs fail before they start. Leaders chase activities rather than outcome. They fund pilots without defining where cash will surface. They discuss models without rewiring operating systems. When the board asks for measurable impact, the story collapses.

If AI is not moving the P and L, it will not scale, she says. In every enterprise transformation I have led, we started with one principle. AI must be decisively profitable.

Chamarthi organizes her philosophy around four operational quadrants. Efficiency. Process reimagination. Product intelligence. Business model evolution. Each quadrant ties directly to measure impact in customer experience and business outcomes. Cost out. Revenue in. Risk down. She does not layer AI onto legacy operations. She redesigns how work flows, how products learn, how value compounds over time.

At Goodyear, that meant applying AI across supply chain and commercial systems to reduce waste and improve pricing precision. The result was not incremental optimization. It was nine figure impact in a matter of months. At Stellantis, she scaled software defined vehicles integral to connected services, infotainment, electrification and autonomous driving, and software ecosystems that generated recurring revenue across global automotive brands. Those programs demanded coordination across engineering, manufacturing, aftermarket, and governance functions. The complexity was structural. So was the solution.

Her approach now powers a stealth startup venture founded to operationalize what she calls a Harvest to Invest flywheel. The premise is straightforward. Most companies fail at transformation because they do not know where to find the money for it. We give them the roadmap and the fuel, she says. We show them where the value is hiding.

Her new initiative operates on outcome-based contracts tied to measurable savings. The model unlocks trapped operational value, converts it into cash, and reinvests those gains into modernization. Cost savings fund digital systems. Digital systems enable new revenue streams. Revenue streams reinforce resilience. The flywheel compounds. The discipline remains constant.

Agentic AI gives you the ability to reimagine, not just automate. It thinks with you. But human judgment stays central, she says. Responsible AI is a board issue, not a tech issue.

Governance defines her edge. As regulatory scrutiny intensifies, especially under the European Union AI Act and expanding U.S. oversight frameworks, enterprises face growing compliance exposure. Chamarthi advises boards to treat AI governance with the same seriousness as capital allocation and cybersecurity. She emphasizes oversight, accountability, and alignment with enterprise risk systems. My lens is digital, operational, ethical, she explains. Most boards say they want transformation. Then they resist it. I help them navigate that fear.

Her board positioning reflects this integration of execution and oversight. She is not seeking ceremonial roles. She brings operational transformation from the inside out. Digital P and L delivery. Industrial modernization. Risk aware leadership. She positions herself as a board member who delivers transformation, not just oversight.

Chamarthi’s leadership narrative also carries a personal dimension. I came to this country with two suitcases. Everything else, I built, she says. I was not born here. I was not bred here. I had to earn every opportunity.

She describes entering executive rooms where few people shared her background. When I walk into a room, I see 99 percent of people who do not look like me. I am used to being underestimated and over delivering. That experience shaped her composure. Calm. Analytical. Results oriented. She avoids theatrics. She leans on proof.

Her mother founded India’s first daycare center. That entrepreneurial lineage informs her commitment to building systems that make a difference to the society and leave a legacy, leave a world better than she found it. Through T200, the nonprofit she founded, Chamarthi mentors and elevates women in technology leadership. She sees inclusion not as optics but as enterprise leverage. Diverse systems outperform. Inclusive talent pipelines compound. Leadership must scale beyond individual achievement.

You can do well and do good. I have done it repeatedly, she says. If we do not shape how AI rolls out in this decade, we will live with the consequences for the rest of our lives. This is a moral obligation. I am not just transforming companies. I am transforming people’s futures.

Her willingness to address ethics does not soften her commercial stance. It sharpens it. She believes governance first frameworks protect enterprise value. They reduce reputational volatility. They create board confidence. They make AI sustainable rather than speculative.

Her strategy has been forward facing authority stacking. High credibility platforms. Governance focused thought leadership. Measurable case studies. She does not debate commentary ecosystems. She replaces them with documented outcomes. The objective is clear. Ensure that page one search reflects excellence, leadership, and operational impact.

Chamarthi frames her brand around measurable business transformation, human centered AI leadership, industrial reinvention through data, and purpose driven governance. She resists futurism detached from economics. AI is not magic. It is method.

That realism shapes her ambition. Let us bottle an approach with real world tools and frameworks. I want to show leaders how to lead when everyone else is hiding. The concept centers on disciplined AI led reinvention. Structure. Case studies. Governance. Practical architecture. A playbook for executives who need performance, not inspiration.

Her industrial lens remains focused on automotive and connected ecosystems. She advises leaders on the transition from software defined vehicles to AI defined vehicles. The shift requires more than feature updates. It requires architecture redesign. Data becomes the core asset. Continuous learning embeds into the product lifecycle. Supply chains integrate predictive intelligence. Aftermarket flywheels generate recurring revenue. Boards must understand how these pieces interlock.

Chamarthi often draws lessons from Formula 1. Precision. Timing. Relentless iteration. High performance teams that operate under pressure without losing discipline. Enterprise transformation demands similar rigor. You cannot bolt AI onto a company and expect victory. You redesign the system around measurable outcomes.

Her counsel to executives is direct: be AI-native, people-first. Start by quantifying the value. Tie outcomes to real cost savings or revenue growth. Reinvest those gains into sustainable operational change. Maintain governance from the outset, and align incentives to measurable performance.

Innovation matters. But measurable impact—delivered through AI that empowers people rather than replaces them—is what boards and operators ultimately trust.

The companies that win with AI will be disciplined, outcome driven, accountable. They will balance machine intelligence with human judgment. They will treat governance as a strategic lever. They will convert cost out into growth flywheels that compound.

Chamarthi’s broader positioning signals the next phase of enterprise AI leadership. Not hype. Not experimentation. Execution. Ethics. Enterprise readiness. She stands apart from the archetype of another technology founder chasing narrative momentum. She presents as a board proven operator imported from Detroit industrial grit, not Silicon Valley abstraction.

AI has become nauseating in its excess, she says. We have to drill down to what matters. That means profit. Risk management. Resilient supply chains. Ethical deployment. It means turning complexity into cash generative systems without breaking today’s P and L.

For executives navigating this moment, her perspective offers a recalibration. Unlock the value already embedded in your operations. Reinvest it with discipline. Govern what you build. Protect your credibility through measurable outcomes. If you cannot trace AI to enterprise performance, you are funding a story. Not a strategy.

“Most cases involving children do not begin with a dramatic accident,” Lever explained in an interview. “They begin with everyday routines. A practice after school. A weekend activity. A form signed in a hurry.”

Lever emphasized that parents spend years focused on preventing injuries, yet many are never prepared for the critical moments that follow an unexpected incident.

“Both moments matter,” Lever said. “Preparation before an injury and clear action afterward often shape outcomes far more than people realize.”

Drawing on decades of experience working with families navigating injury cases, Lever noted how quickly confusion can set in after a child is hurt.

“Parents are understandably focused on care and comfort,” he said. “But important details can be lost. Documentation gets delayed. Conversations go unrecorded. Decisions are made under pressure.”

According to Lever, the result is often additional stress layered on top of an already emotional situation. Thinking ahead can significantly reduce that burden.

“There are two moments that matter,” Lever said.

The first moment, he explained, centers on prevention. Lever stresses that prevention does not require constant fear or hypervigilance but instead a practical level of awareness.

“Children move through many environments every week,” Lever noted. “Schools, sports programs, camps, and organized activities all approach safety and supervision in different ways.”

For parents, understanding those environments can make a meaningful difference.

“Knowing who supervises, how injuries are handled, and what protocols exist can surface concerns before they turn into harm,” Lever said.

He also pointed to paperwork as an often overlooked part of prevention.

“Forms and waivers are frequently treated as routine,” Lever explained. “They are signed quickly and forgotten. Taking the time to read what you are agreeing to and asking questions when something is unclear helps parents make informed choices.”

Lever added that while no document excuses unsafe behavior, understanding expectations and procedures can provide important clarity if something goes wrong.

Communication between parents and children also plays a critical role.

“Children often recognize unsafe situations before adults do,” Lever said. “But they may not know how to express that discomfort.”

He encourages parents to create open conversations around everyday safety.

“Talking with children about safety and encouraging them to speak up builds awareness and trust,” Lever explained. “Many injuries are prevented because a child felt comfortable saying something did not feel right.”

Organization is another practical but important step.

“Keeping emergency contacts, medical details, and permissions current and easy to access reduces confusion in stressful moments,” Lever said. “When injuries happen, delays often stem from missing or outdated information.”

Lever also advises parents not to overlook small warning signs.

“Minor pain complaints, recurring issues with supervision, or equipment that does not seem right deserve attention,” he noted. “Addressing small concerns early can prevent larger problems later.”

He stressed that prevention rarely comes down to one dramatic decision.

“It is about consistent, thoughtful attention,” Lever said.

The second critical moment comes after an injury occurs.

“At that point priorities shift,” Lever explained. “A parent’s first responsibility is care.”

Following medical guidance is essential, he added, even when an injury initially appears minor.

“Some injuries evolve over time,” Lever said. “Early follow through protects both health and recovery.”

Once care is underway, documentation becomes important.

“Writing down what happened while details are fresh helps preserve accuracy,” Lever explained. “Dates, locations, and names matter. Photos, messages, witness information, and other details should be gathered when possible.”

He emphasized that this step can be valuable even when families are not considering legal action.

“Even parents who do not anticipate legal action benefit from having clear records,” Lever said.

Communication with schools, teams, or other programs should also be timely and documented.

“Let them know what occurred and keep notes of follow up conversations,” Lever advised. “This is not about blame. It is about ensuring accountability and understanding.”

Lever also encourages parents to watch for emotional impacts following an injury.

“Children may experience fear, anxiety, or behavioral changes after an injury,” he said. “Healing is not only physical. Checking in during the weeks that follow supports full recovery.”

Finally, Lever advises parents to avoid rushing decisions.

“There is rarely a need to rush decisions after an injury,” he said. “Taking time to understand options and seek guidance leads to better outcomes.”

Reflecting on the cases he has handled throughout his career, Lever observed that some of the most difficult situations arise not from unavoidable accidents but from the absence of preparation or early documentation.

“Parents do not need to live in fear,” Lever said. “They need practical tools.”

According to Lever, focusing on prevention before an injury and clarity afterward helps families protect both their children and their peace of mind.

“These two moments truly matter,” he said.

A conversation with prolific music composer, producer, and songwriter Shiloh Rodriguez

In 2026, the creative economy is no longer defined by who grants access, but by who builds momentum. As traditional industry gatekeepers continue to lose influence, composers, producers, and artists are increasingly shaping their own careers through a blend of talent, storytelling, and direct audience connection. Social platforms, once viewed primarily as marketing tools, have become legitimate stages where creative credibility, visibility, and opportunity converge.

Against this backdrop, Shiloh Rodriguez stands out as a case study in what the modern music career can look like when craft and strategy move in tandem. A Los Angeles based composer, producer, and songwriter, Rodriguez has quietly built a body of work that spans film, professional sports, branded content, and digital media, while also cultivating a global audience that engages with both his music and his creative process.

At a time when artists are being asked to do more than create, to educate, engage, and adapt, Rodriguez has embraced the challenge without diluting his artistic core. His work offers insight into how music can function as narrative, how technology can serve emotion rather than replace it, and how independence can coexist with large scale professional success.

In this interview, Rodriguez shares how he has navigated the evolving creative landscape, translated visibility into opportunity, and continued to prioritize storytelling in a content driven world.

MK: Shiloh, your work spans film, sports, branded content, and digital media. How do you describe what you do to someone unfamiliar with your world?

SR: It’s all about story for me!. It really doesn’t matter what kind of project I am writing for, my goal is to approach the material with genuine excitement for how I can support the narrative and enhance the emotion. Music is not background for me, it is a main character and a driving force that helps shape how people feel and how they experience a moment. I love diving into whatever world we are creating from, like “Oh we are vikings this time? Works for me!”

MK: Your career blends traditional composition with modern production. How did that foundation take shape?

SR: Inspiration is my secret weapon. At every point in a project, I am digging deep into my file cabinet of influences, and I don’t shy away from non-traditional places. I’ve always been drawn to cinematic scores and experimental sound design and growing up in the age of digital media has allowed me to absorb so many ideas that I can pull from. The balance of conventional and non-conventional allows me to create immersive soundscapes that feel expansive but still contemporary.

MK: Since launching your freelance career in 2014, you have worked with major professional sports organizations. What has that experience taught you?

SR: Sports music is about energy, timing, and emotional impact. Working with organizations like the Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Golden State Valkyries, and LA Clippers pushed me to think about music at scale. My work has been used in stadiums, promotional campaigns, and broadcast content across major sports networks, which teaches you precision and adaptability.

MK: Your film scoring work includes Infinite Dreamers, featured at the Nvision Latin Film Festival. What stood out about that project?

SR: Infinite Dreamers challenged me creatively. I fused ancient Mayan and Aztec instrumentation with modern and futuristic elements. I love ideas that blend seemingly distant influences, and on this project I think I pulled it off.

MK: Your original music has surpassed twelve million streams and reached massive audiences online. How did that growth happen?

SR: Sharing music directly with audiences changed everything. My compositions have been heard more than one billion times globally, and millions of user generated posts have incorporated my music. Several remixes have trended number one worldwide on Instagram. It feels like I am scoring people’s lives.

MK: How do you personally approach social media as a creative professional?

SR: I treat social platforms as creative tools rather than end goals. I did not start with the intention of chasing numbers. I focused on sharing my process and my work. That authenticity helped me build an engaged audience across Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

MK: Has that visibility translated into professional opportunities?

SR: Undoubtedly. Social media has been essential and it has opened doors to film, sports, and branded collaborations, while also allowing me to bypass traditional industry gatekeepers. Being seen on a global scale is an unbelievable privilege and asset for connecting with the power players of the industry.

MK: Do you have a dream project you would still love to pursue?

SR: I love anything that has a deep well of inspiration. Expansive stories are the most fun and adventurous for me.

MK: Where can audiences follow your work?

SR: A great place to start is on Instagram @shilohrodriguez, I feel like people can get a sense of my genuine love for creativity there.

As the creative economy continues to mature in 2026, stories like Shiloh Rodriguez’s are becoming increasingly relevant. His career reflects a broader shift toward artist led ecosystems, where creators are no longer waiting for permission to participate at the highest levels. Instead, they are building visibility, credibility, and opportunity in parallel.

Rodriguez’s ability to move fluidly between film, sports, education, and digital platforms underscores a larger truth about today’s marketplace. Versatility, narrative clarity, and audience connection are no longer optional. They are foundational. His work illustrates how music can remain deeply human even as technology accelerates every aspect of production and distribution.

At a moment when the industry is recalibrating what success looks like for composers and producers, Rodriguez offers a forward-facing model. One where storytelling leads, technology supports, and independence does not mean isolation.

In a year defined by creative reinvention, Shiloh Rodriguez is not simply adapting to the modern marketplace. He is actively shaping what it can become.

How well-meaning estate planning language can either preserve family harmony or become evidence in probate court

As wealth transfers accelerate and multi-generational planning becomes more sophisticated, families are increasingly looking beyond traditional wills and trusts to articulate values, purpose, and long-term vision. One tool gaining attention is the family mission statement. While often viewed as a unifying document designed to preserve legacy and harmony, estate litigation attorney Don Ford cautions that these statements carry legal implications that families may not fully appreciate. When disputes arise, even informal writings can influence how intent is interpreted in court.

Estate planning disputes rarely begin with bad intentions. According to probate, trust and estate planning attorney Don Ford, Managing Partner at Ford + Bergner LLP, most probate and trust conflicts arise because family members disagree about what someone meant, what they wanted, or how much discretion a fiduciary was expected to exercise.

Ford, a seasoned probate and trust litigation attorney, frequently speaks about the growing use of family mission statements in estate planning. While these documents are not legally binding in most jurisdictions, he explains that they can significantly influence how courts interpret intent when disputes arise.

“A family mission statement can either clarify a legacy or complicate it,” Ford says. “It depends entirely on how it is drafted and whether it aligns with the governing estate documents.”

A family mission statement typically outlines a family’s values, long term priorities, and philosophical approach to wealth. It may address stewardship, philanthropy, education expectations, work ethic, entrepreneurship, or the broader purpose behind trusts and multi-generational planning. Unlike a will or trust, it is generally informational rather than legally enforceable.

However, Ford cautions that informational does not mean irrelevant. “In litigation, anything that sheds light on intent may become evidence,” he explains. “If a dispute involves discretionary distributions or fiduciary judgment, opposing parties often look for supporting language wherever they can find it.”

When carefully coordinated with estate planning documents, family mission statements can reduce the likelihood of conflict. They can provide context for trustee decisions, clarify why distributions are structured a certain way, and help beneficiaries understand the reasoning behind unequal allocations. According to Ford, clarity often discourages litigation by managing expectations early.

At the same time, poorly drafted statements can create problems. If the language contradicts a will or trust, beneficiaries may argue that the legally binding documents do not reflect the decedent’s true intent. Vague phrases such as treating everyone fairly or supporting family success can invite competing interpretations in court.

“Ambiguity is the oxygen of litigation,” Ford notes. “The more room there is for interpretation, the greater the risk of dispute.”

He also warns against attempting to impose moral or lifestyle directives through non-binding language. Beneficiaries may challenge fiduciaries who try to enforce expectations that lack legal authority, while others may accuse fiduciaries of ignoring stated family values.

Generally speaking, family mission statements are not enforceable unless their provisions are formally incorporated into a valid will or trust. Even so, courts may consider them when evaluating fiduciary discretion or alleged breaches of duty. This makes alignment between the statement and the estate plan essential.

Ford advocates what he calls litigation aware estate planning. “Estate planning is not just about transferring assets,” he says. “It is about anticipating human dynamics. If you understand how disputes unfold in court, you can draft documents that reduce the risk of conflict.”

For families considering a mission statement, Ford recommends ensuring it aligns with all governing documents, clearly stating that it is non binding, avoiding subjective language, and reviewing it periodically as circumstances change.

“A thoughtful mission statement can strengthen a legacy,” Ford concludes. “But it must be drafted with precision and with an understanding of how it could be used in a courtroom.”

It becomes a stage. For four days, the city transforms into a living, breathing celebration of food, culture, music, and creativity as the Food Network South Beach Wine and Food Festival presented by Capital One returns with unmatched scale and energy. In 2026, that transformation carries extra weight. SOBEWFF is celebrating its 25th anniversary, marking a milestone that reflects how far the Festival has come and how deeply it has shaped the national culinary conversation.

What began as a regional food gathering is now one of the most influential experiential platforms in the country, drawing more than 500 chefs and celebrity talent and tens of thousands of attendees annually. It is also a powerful engine for education, having raised more than $45 million to support Florida International University’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. This year’s programming is bigger, louder, and more immersive than ever, stretching across Miami Beach, the mainland, and beyond.

In a crowded festival landscape where many events feel interchangeable, SOBEWFF stands apart because it has never treated food as a silo. From its earliest years, the Festival has understood cuisine as culture, a connective force that brings together entertainment, travel, philanthropy, and education in ways that feel authentic rather than manufactured. That philosophy is especially visible in this 25th anniversary edition, where the programming feels less like a retrospective and more like a forward-looking snapshot of where food, hospitality, and live experiences are headed next. SOBEWFF 2026 is not resting on legacy. It is using it as fuel.

If you love food, travel, culture, or simply being where the energy is, here are ten reasons SOBEWFF 2026 belongs at the top of your calendar.

1. It is not just a festival. It is a full-scale cultural takeover.

SOBEWFF does not simply host events. It redefines Miami for four days. From sunlit beachfront tastings to late-night DJ sets and chef-driven spectacles, the Festival blurs the lines between culinary celebration, entertainment, and destination travel. The 25th anniversary amplifies that ambition, expanding the Festival’s footprint and layering food with music, pop culture, and nightlife in a way few events can match. With more than 105 events on the schedule and talent spanning food, television, fashion, and music, SOBEWFF feels less like a weekend festival and more like a citywide experience that rewards curiosity and appetite in equal measure.

2. Mike’s Amazing Burger Bash is a legend for a reason.

Thursday night’s Mike’s Amazing Burger Bash presented by Schweid and Sons is more than an opening event. It is a rite of passage. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Burger Bash brings together top restaurants from across the country, each vying for ultimate burger bragging rights. Hosted by Rachael Ray, with Brooklyn Peltz Beckham joining as co-host and debuting a special dish created exclusively for the event, the evening blends competition, indulgence, and star power. A judging panel that includes Gayle King, Ashley Graham, Bert Kreischer, and Nick DiGiovanni ensures the stakes are real. Thousands of burgers later, one chef walks away with the coveted title, and guests leave knowing they just witnessed one of the most iconic moments in American food festivals.

3. Wine Spectator Trade Day sets the tone for what comes next.

Friday afternoon’s Wine Spectator Trade Day hosted by Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits offers a sophisticated counterpoint to the Festival’s more raucous moments. Designed for industry insiders, this event is where conversations happen, palates are challenged, and trends begin to crystallize. Producers, distributors, and professionals gather to taste, connect, and exchange insights that ripple far beyond the Festival weekend. It is polished, purposeful, and quietly influential, reminding attendees that SOBEWFF is as much about shaping the future of food and drink as it is about celebrating the present.

4. Guy Fieri turns competition into pure spectacle.

Friday night’s Coca-Cola presents Tournament of Champions hosted by Guy Fieri delivers Food Network adrenaline at full throttle. This is culinary competition designed for a live audience, complete with high-energy judging, bold flavors, and theatrical flair. The addition of a live performance by Rev Run elevates the night from cooking show to cultural event. It is loud, fast, and unapologetically fun, capturing the spirit of Miami while showcasing the intensity and creativity that define modern food entertainment.

5. The Grand Tasting Village is the beating heart of the Festival.

Saturday and Sunday afternoons belong to the Goya Foods’ Grand Tasting Village featuring Publix Culinary Demonstrations sponsored by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove. Hosted by Sofia Vergara and Manolo Vergara, the Village is a sprawling culinary playground where guests can wander, taste, sip, and discover at their own pace. Live demonstrations, brand activations, and endless bites create a choose-your-own-adventure experience that rewards curiosity. Saturday’s addition of a Ja Rule performance on the Only in Dade stage underscores how seamlessly SOBEWFF blends food with music, turning a daytime tasting into an all-out celebration.

6. FoodieCon adds global flavor and travel inspiration.

Saturday’s FoodieCon presented by The Islands of The Bahamas brings a distinct sense of place to the Festival. This immersive experience blends culinary storytelling with travel inspiration, spotlighting island flavors, culture, and creativity. It is a reminder that food is one of the most powerful gateways to understanding a destination, and that SOBEWFF is as much about exploration as it is about indulgence.

7. Master’s of Fire taps into something primal.

Saturday night’s Master’s of Fire hosted by Tyler Florence celebrates cooking at its most elemental. Live-fire techniques, bold flavors, and dramatic presentations come together in an event that feels both ancient and modern. Flames flicker, chefs push boundaries, and guests experience food in its rawest, most visceral form. It is a standout moment that proves why fire-driven cuisine continues to captivate chefs and diners alike.

8. Tacos and tequila take over the Miami Design District.

Saturday night’s Tacos and Tequila presented by Tequila Cazadores hosted by Aarón Sánchez brings the Festival into the heart of the Miami Design District. This ticketed event combines bold Mexican flavors with flowing pours and a late-night vibe that feels effortlessly Miami. It is social, celebratory, and perfectly timed for those who want to keep the energy going long after the sun sets.

9. Sunday’s finale honors legacy and celebration.

Sunday evening’s BACARDÍ presents 25 Years of Legendary Bites and Iconic Sips hosted by Andrew Zimmern is both a look back and a toast forward. The event celebrates the Festival’s history while embracing its future, pairing thoughtfully crafted food with expertly mixed cocktails. DJ CASSIDY’s performance brings a high-energy soundtrack that feels celebratory rather than nostalgic, closing the weekend on a note of collective appreciation and joy.

10. Every bite supports the future of hospitality.

Perhaps the most meaningful reason to attend SOBEWFF is its mission. One hundred percent of net proceeds benefit FIU’s Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, and more than 1,500 students gain hands-on experience each year working alongside world-class chefs, winemakers, and brands. SOBEWFF is not just an event. It is a training ground, a scholarship engine, and a living classroom that ensures the next generation of hospitality leaders is ready to thrive.

Few cities know how to host spectacle the way Miami does. Its energy is visual, sonic, and social all at once. SOBEWFF harnesses that spirit and amplifies it through food, bringing together chefs, artists, brands, and audiences in settings that feel inseparable from the city itself. In 2026, the Festival’s expanded footprint and layered programming make Miami not just the location, but a co-star in the experience.

SOBEWFF 2026 is not simply a food festival. It is a milestone moment, a destination experience, and a cultural event that captures Miami at its most vibrant. With tickets already on sale and more talent announcements still to come, this 25th anniversary promises to be one for the history books.
