That’s right – well over FIVE MILLION PEOPLE ignored all the Yellow Pages ads, direct mail coupons, patient referral programs and everything else you may be doing – choosing instead to electronically locate a dentist! And well over a million patients stayed in touch with their current dentist, generating millions of dollars worth of treatment, due to what is now being referred to as “Web 2.0” or “Social Media Marketing.”</p>
<p>The story of a former &#8220;tech-challenged&#8221; doc:</p>
<p> “We attended your Social Media Market Summit in Baltimore. At that time, we had no presence on the internet, and by “no” I mean zero. However, we were determined to correct that with hard work. We developed our search engine optimized website, MediaPAdentist.com. Our patients happily gave video and written testimonials. As prospective patients began finding us, the phones started ringing like crazy.We now appoint nearly everyone who calls by applying your dental appointment scheduling techniques. In the past four weeks, our new patient volume has quadrupled and we are #1 on Google for many of our services. <p>There is an incredible new way to let people know about your dental office! The good news is that it’s virtually free! The better news is that if you take advantage of this technology now, you will be able to very quickly establish yourself as THE EXPERT DENTIST in your area and basically blow your competition out of the water! Web 2.0 has the potential to bring more income into your practice than anything you have ever done in the past!</p>
<p>Think back for a second. Remember 10-15 years ago when dentists were first getting websites? Many had no idea what they were doing but they just wanted to jump on the bandwagon because after all, the mentality was “if the dentist across the street has a site, I better get one.”</p>
<p>Some sites were pretty good; unfortunately most were bad. But good or bad, one of the big problems with these sites was they were impossible for the public to stumble upon. And unfortunately fifteen years later, most dental web sites are the same – they may look good but they are not bringing in many new patients. They are no more than fancy “electronic brochures!”</p>
<p>Search engine optimization (oftentimes referred to simply as SEO) promised to take care of that problem! The idea here is if you tweak your site by adding certain tags and keywords, someone in your area searching for a dentist would easily find you site because it would pop up very high on Google.</p>
<p>But hold on cowboy&#8230; it’s not quite that easy!</p>
<p>Even if you are lucky enough to have the knowledge to optimize your site yourself or to find the right person to help you, there is still an inherent problem using search engine optimization to promote your practice on the web. The problem is: the only people that will find you are the ones that are actively searching and&#8230;</p>
<p>just happened to type in the correct keywords!</p>
<p>What is the likelihood? Most studies show that it is very slim. Plus, Google constantly changes their search parameters, so staying on top of this is almost impossible.</p>
<p>But imagine people in your area finding out about you and your practice in a different way – as they go about their normal online activities such as web browsing, emailing, shopping, social networking, and the like? If that were possible, don’t you think that would be much more of an effective marketing strategy?</p>
<p>It is a brand new approach, combining all of the tools that the internet has to offer which equates to new patients,<br />
happier patients and MORE BUSINESS!!!</p>
<p>And right now your dental office can have success with this in the same way that Southwest Airlines, Marriott Hotels, Sony Electronics and many of the other big boys have! There is a definite way of getting your name and message out to the people in your area about you as a dentist. Not only that, this will be an interested and well-informed group that is very likely to accept treatment recommendations and refer others like crazy to you. But in addition to the starting team, there must be other starting pitchers, relief pitchers and a strong “second string.” And it doesn’t end there. In order to win, you need a manager, coaches, trainers, office personnel and so on. And they all work in conjunction with each other to produce a desired result. The best nine players in the league couldn’t win a game without everything else properly in place.</p>
<p>Social media marketing is actually similar. It consists of a series of things that you do online that all work in harmony to produce a specific and very predictable result, which in this case is getting people to find out about your practice, come to you as a patient, accept treatment and refer others! And remember, it will also get your current patients to accept more treatment and talk up your office like crazy!</p>
<p>Right at this very moment there is a gold mine out there, and if approached the correct way, YOU are going to be light years ahead of every dentist in your area!</p>

<p>You guys should really think about how you&#8217;re approaching this topic. You are basically questioning the intelligence of anyone that does business with a full-service dealer. Unless you are completely out of touch with this industry, you should know &#8220;why&#8221; practices work with dealers. I have no doubt that &#8220;M&#8221; Club can save a couple bucks on a box of cotton rolls, but this is certainly no revolutionary new idea to mail-order your supplies. You should stick to what you guys do best and help grow practice productivity and not &#8220;sell out&#8221; to the idea that you can &#8220;save&#8221; yourself to prosperity.<br />

We are fans of open dialogue and confrontation and we do have a unique way of expressing ourselves; we and those that follow our writings find our comments, critiques and humor to be a breath of fresh air. Of course, practices are free to do business with whomever they prefer and many have historically relied heavily on a distributor’s field representative to visit their office and arrange supply orders.  However, our years serving practices in helping to maximize their profits while also lowering their fixed costs have taught us that challenging this traditional model can result in a substantial cost savings for the customer.<br />

<p>Great question &#8211; we get that one a lot. There is absolutely nothing wrong with sending a man flowers &#8211; everybody loves flowers! Actually, since most men receive flowers so infrequently they have lots of impact. It will really get their co-workers curious and they will all ask who the flowers are from, creating a ton of &#8220;good press&#8221; for your practice. Of course, if you have a reputation for hitting on men or just plain don&#8217;t like the idea, you can place movie passes, a restaurant gift certificate, etc., inside of the mug. But we love flowers!</p>

Whether you knew it or not, today is &#8220;Random Act of Kindness Day.&#8221;  So we thought it would be a great idea for the dental community as a whole to jump on this bandwagon. You can&#8217;t go wrong when it comes to making someone else feel better by being kind.</p>
<p>Start with your patients. Do the unexpected. Is there someone coming in today that has been struggling to make payments on their bill? They are super nice, but things aren&#8217;t that easy for them? Why not write off the balance? Can you imagine the look on your patient&#8217;s face?</p>
<p>What about your awesome team? Maybe order in lunch or have a rose delivered to each team member as a special token of appreciation. Have you had a good month? How about giving out $50.00 bills with the stipulation that it must be spent on themselves! Pedicure gift certificates are always a great idea, too! Be creative and make them smile!</p>
<p>Of course there is your family. What can you do to make them feel special today? Give them a night off and take them all out to dinner? Suggest a family game night? Surprise them!</p>
<p>Lastly, a random act of kindness day wouldn&#8217;t be complete without helping out a complete stranger. Pay for the person&#8217;s toll behind you or another person&#8217;s coffee at the coffee shop. Maybe tip your waitress more than she expects. Compliment someone on their outfit or hairstyle and make their day! Smile at everyone you meet.</p>
<p>Ronald Reagan instituted this holiday while he was in office some 30 years ago. Kindness can go a long way and it always make both parties feel great! Go ahead and make someone&#8217;s day today and share a kind word or deed. Have a wonderful weekend!</p>

Here is a recent one that we wanted to share with you:</p>
<p>Q: I read all about your social media marketing and your Madow Mail to new residents and it all sounds great. My problem is that I have virtually no budget for marketing right now. What can I do to grow my practice?<br />
Dr. H., Metairie, LA</p>
<p>A: First of all, every practice needs to have a budget for marketing. The most successful ones could easily spend 5-10% of their gross on marketing and that&#8217;s what makes them top-notch! You cannot afford NOT to have a strong social media presence these days as well as a great website that consistently pulls in new patients! And you are right, &#8220;Madow Mailing&#8221; to the new residents in your area brings in tons of patients as predictably as the sun rises every day.</p>
<p>But having said that, here is a great way to market your practice on the cheap! Make sure EVERY team member in your office has their very own personalized business card. And once they all have cards, make sure everyone (doctor included) starts doing ALL of their personal business in the area of the office.</p>
<p>What are the personal things we are referring to? How about grocery shopping, eating in restaurants, the gym, banking, dry cleaning, nails, car washing, haircuts, massage, beauty salons&#8230; the list goes on and on.</p>
<p>And every time a team member or the doc is in a place of business, make it your mission to hand your business card to at least one person. Then it becomes a game of mathematics! Can you imagine how many people in the community will have your cards at the end of six months? Let&#8217;s just say&#8230;</p>
<p>TONS OF THEM!</p>
<p>This is like the &#8220;poor man&#8217;s&#8221; social media! Your name gets around to many people fairly quickly. We urge you to try this technique whether you are spending zero or $200,000 a year on marketing. Why? Because it works!</p>
