Mineral Makeup

Just giving y'all a heads-up on a terrific website and line of cosmetics I have found while browsing the web.

Cosminology seems to be a lovely line of Mineral Makeup that I am curious about. Not only were the products featured in the "swag bags" at the 2008 Oscars, but they are fairly reasonably priced. I've been curious to try Mineral Make Up for quite some time now. I have problem skin. Though my acne has calmed down over the years, I have slight scarring. Whenever I try new medications or even products, my skin seems to lash out on me - causing redness, sensitivity, and dryness. Even the most expensive creams for severe skin sensitivity often fail. It makes me wonder if mineral make up is the route I should be taking?!

Anyway, check out the website. It's thorough and nice to look at. There are some before and after shots of women with redness, scarring, etc. There are testimonials and you can view their full product line.

As they say, beauty is only skin deep. You could look like a million bucks. People generally assume that you have it all, especially when you got the looks. Anyway, that's how it usually seems.

We can bury a lot with a good concealer and luscious mascara.

Beauty Products Compared is a website dedicated to skin care product reviews, mainly focusing on anti-wrinkle and facial skin care. There is a comprehensive list of reviews for many skin care lines. For example, let's take a look at the le mer skin care line.

For the le mer skin care line, the site gives you a detailed overview of the le mer product. The site tells you about the details of the product itself, in a thorough manner. You get to the know the positive things about the product as well as the downsides to it, keeping it fair. It wraps up with a "bottom line" about the product, as well, which is a nice way to wrap up.

It's worth taking a look at the site. I know I'm curious to see how my beauty products are rated!

When I was a teenager, I remember going to Sears and trying out the demo model of an EpiLady Shaver. I tried it on my arm hand, near my wrist. I remember wanting to scream aloud - it hurt that much. If only there was a place for women's shaver reviews and to hear product feedback back then.

Anyway, I found a product review/women's shaver reviews site that may come in handy for those looking for women's shavers without the hassle or pain! It's fairly easy to browse and is user-friendly. I think the best people to ask about products are the ones who have actually tried and used them. Hands-on!

I'll stick with my good old fashioned razor. That's what I prefer. You never know when I might change my mind and find myself a shaver. Before doing that, I would be certain to read up on some women's shaver reviews beforehand.

Dealing with the Dermatologist...

...or lack thereof.

I was scheduled to have an appointment with my dermatologist this week. As I mentioned in previous posts, my skin lashed out at me for using one of the gels that my doctor prescribed for me - Benzaclin. It hasn't been fun though my skin has calmed down since I stopped using it. Of course, I am still experiencing the occasionally burning sensation underneath my eyes and some dry patches. It is worthy enough to see a dermatologist, in my humble opinion.

Earlier in the week, I received a call from my dermatologist's office. The doctor is ill, according to the receptionist, and I have to reschedule. Here is how our conversation went:

R - "The next appointment available is on December 17th at 1:45pm."

Me - "Unfortunately, I won't be in town around that time."

R - "How about December 18th at 2:30?"

Me - "No, I will be away for Christmas. Out of town."

R - "Okay. How about December 19th?"

Me - "No. I won't be in town. I will be home for Christmas, out of province. I will not be in Montreal then."

We then decided on a date in January even though I'm just thinking about getting referred to a different dermatologist altogether. I then asked about using Benzaclin and the other gels as when they called to tell me to quit using them, they spoke to my partner who is terrible at taking messages.

She told me, "Ohhh, well...you'll have to ask your doctor about that."

Jeez, that's what I'm trying to do for crying out loud! So yeah, no appointment 'til January. Yet another successful appointment, or lack thereof, with my dermatologist.

Yet Another Skin Update

Remember that last blog I wrote? You know, the one where I'm talking about how my skin is getting clearer and I'm using all these new products, including gels that my dermatologist prescribed? It seems that immediately after I wrote that blog, my skin bitterly laughed and sought revenge on me! Ah, and so it goes.

As I mentioned before, my dermatologist prescribed Benzaclin and Differin. This combination of products and, perhaps, the fact that I recently upped my dosage to my thyroid medication has turned my skin into a living hell. My skin became extremely sensitive to these gels, as well as everything else that I applied to my face - moisturizer, foundation, cleanser, and even this bottle of super expensive thermal water spray. I ended up changing my cleanser, moisturizer, and eye cream to products that are designed for those with sensitive skin. I thought it would help but it didn't seem to do the trick. Whenever I applied anything to my face, it burned and reddened in appearance. The areas of major trouble were around my eyes, the corners of my nose, and the corners of my mouth - exactly the places were I was not applying the medicated gels! After the burning subsided, my skin became dry and scaly. I looked like I aged overnight and my face felt uncomfortable, if that makes any sense. I became concerned when I noticed a specific patch of red and dry skin under one eye that sort of resembles eczema. I called my dermatologist and he told me to quit using Benzaclin.

Now, you've heard me rant about my dermatologist before. I don't care for the guy. As I said before, the way I see it - if you're going to make me wait three months for an appointment with you, give me a least a good ten minutes of your time to talk and get to know my skin. He could have spent time asking me if I indeed had sensitive skin - which I did before but not to this extent - and we could have avoided this situation altogether. I don't even know if he knows that I have a thyroid problem.

I've stopped using the Benzaclin and I immediately saw a difference. My skin ceased to be extremely dry and itchy, especially in the corners of my mouth and nose and under my eyes. I still have that small patch of red, dry skin under one eye that is ultra sensitive one day and a-okay the next. I have a scheduled appointment to see my dermatologist this upcoming Thursday, oh joy. Wish me luck - that he either doesn't rush me through or I have the voice to say, wait a minute...this is MY appointment so don't shoo me out the door with questions I'll never have the chance to ask.

As far as acne and my skin goes, my skin does feel smoother and a little nicer. I just went through a patch of break-out which I'm sure the dry state of my skin didn't help. Though I know my skin isn't that bad, it would be nice to have nice skin for once. However, I really have to accept that this just might not be the case when I refuse to take (orally) anti-biotics or Accutane.

I'll let you know how Thursday goes.

Hello everybody! (All three of my loyal readers....haha!)

Once again, it's been a while and, for that, I do sincerely apologize. It's been a busy summer, full of adventure and out of town friends. I am back at work now, working well over 40 hours a week. When I get home, I can honestly say that the last thing I want to do is sit in front of the computer and blog. I want to eat dinner, sit on the couch to talk with my man, and go for a walk with my dog. Call me boring.

It's been a month since I have been using the prescribed gel medication that my dermatologist recommended. As per my doctor, I have been using Differin in the morning and Benzaclyn before bed. The results have been interesting.

I have no problem with the Differin. It is a very light gel that does not conflict with my skin. Benzaclyn, on the other hand, has been very rough on my skin. It makes sense considering it is a pretty strong acne gel to use on your skin. I have sensitive skin in the first place so my reaction wasn't fun. My skin began to feel very tight and dry, especially around my nostrils and around my eyes (including my eyelids). I'm no dummy - I read the instructions and I know better not to apply strong topical medication near those areas of my face. Even though I avoided those areas, my face stung something fierce. It burned to the point where even washing my face with just water, hurt like hell. I spoke to my regular doctor, as I didn't care for the dermatologist I met with, and she told me to cut the Benzaclyn to every other day until my skin gets used to it and spoil yourself on some good moisturizer.

"If you don't spoil yourself, who else will?!" she said with a wise laugh.

Normally, I avoid shopping. I went a little insane over summer as far as money and shopping and cute boutiques go. However, my doctor told me I should so off to the mall I went! Insert happy and guilty smile here!

I usually buy my skin care needs at Shoppers Drug Mart (or Pharmaprix, here in Quebec). They have a separate little boutique, full of skin care lines that are inexpensive to very pricey. On my first trip to the shop, I spoke with a very helpful representative. I told her my issues and she knew the answer to my problem instantly. Sometimes, I hate asking for help. I don't doubt their knowledge. I find that a lot of people who work at multi-line skincare boutiques just have their own favorites and kind of disregard the other lines that could possibly work for others. Nope, she knew her stuff and I felt like her service and suggestions were directed at me and me only. That's always a nice feeling when you are clueless but looking for something specific.

I went home with a moisturizer from Avene - Hydrance Optimale hydrating cream for sensitive skin. It's super gentle, fragrance free, and contains SPF 25 (which is great since these gels I am using make my skin very sensitive to the sun). It cost a pretty penny and comes in a 40mL tube. Needless to say, I use it gingerly. It came with a free spray bottle of Thermal Spring Water which is used to sooth and soften sensitive skin, especially after a sunburn or regular skin sensitivity. I tried it and I think it worked but I'm not completely convinced. The moisturizer seems to do the trick however.

My second trip to the shop was to switch my face cleanser. Biotherm's Acnopur line was simply too harsh when used with the prescribed gels. This time, the different associate was a little confused with my questions. I told her that I wanted to stick with the Biotherm line since I loved the Acnopur line. She did not know much about their sensitive skin line and just bullshitted her way through the transaction. She did her best - I can relate when I worked at the MAC counter. A lot of successful retail work is the art of bullshitting anyway. I came home with Biotherm's Biosensitive Softening Foaming Cleansing Water and Biosensitive Soothing Eye Care Cream.

When I was at the store, I was not convinced with the foaming cleanser. I'm used to soapy cleansers. I like feeling soap on my hands and face. This seemed so light and useless. I was surprised. It works! It cleans efficiently, it is so incredibly lightweight, and completely ideal for sensitive skin. Since using this, my skin has not felt itchy or burning. I've been using it every other day too - hey, I'm cheap and don't want to throw up the small amount of Acnopur cleanser I have left. I really like it and it has made my skin feel a lot better.

The Biosensitive eye cream works just as well. It's lightweight, no fragrance, soothing, and gentle. This is the first eye cream that I have ever purchased, believe it or not. It has cured that burning feeling and my eyelids are no longer dry and flaky. I don't know if my eyes look less fatigued but they certainly seem less puffy.

So, it's been a month since I have been using the medicated gels and the new skincare products. And I have to admit, my skin is looking a lot better. I mean, it didn't look horrific before. I just know that it has changed. My skin feels softer to the touch. I am not breaking out as much, even around PMS time. When I do break out, it's one spot and it goes away a lot quicker without scarring as before. When I feel completely burnt out, my skin doesn't seem to show it as much. I just started work again and have been reunited with my co-workers. My boss told me that my face is not as red as it was before. I told my other co-worker that I was tired one day and she said that she couldn't see it as my skin looks radiant (and she didn't even know I was using dermatologist recommended medication). I think it has improved, slowly but surely. I wish I could be using more natural creams and solutions, that's my only complaint. Otherwise, my skin is really looking better and feeling better.

Messing with Hormones?

A long time ago, I saw an endocrinologist who told me that my hormones were imbalanced. I was a teenager and I was trying to get my acne under control. It was at the final straw, as far as seeing doctors went, and she told me that the only way that I can have clear skin is to go on birth control pills and Accutane.

Well, I was fifteen or so and still a virgin. I wasn't having sex and I didn't want to mess up my already mildly messed up hormones even more so. I still believe this, for myself. I refuse to go on the pill. I don't pass judgment on others who wish to go on the pill but it's just not something that I feel good about. I feel that if I am this way - slightly hormonally imbalanced, slightly emotional, and with now slight skin problems - then I am meant to be this way. We have become to easily convinced to go on pills and medications and I don't want to be a walking pharmacy. It's just something I don't believe in and that includes messing around with hormones unless it's completely needed. For example, like my thyroid medication.

As I was reading articles online about hormones, I came across this site advertising progesterone creams. Now, it says that these are natural progesterone creams but it still kind of gives me a hesitant feeling inside. Sure enough, the ingredients are pretty natural as natural goes. I'm suspicious though, I wonder if it's like a dealer in snake oil. Will this actually work for people who suffer with terrible hormonal imbalance or is it just another phony skincare line designed to take your money? At least the cost is pretty low.

Maybe I am simply not in the position to pass judgment. I don't have severe PMS nor am I menopausal. I cannot relate nor do I actually need to use a progesterone cream to control my nasty hormones. However, I would love to hear what you have to think about this cream. Especially, if you are a user of it! I'm curious!

It's been a while since I posted here! As I mentioned a while back, I recently had a unsatisfactory trip to the dermatologist. I wasn't pleased with the way I was treated as a number and I far from happy with way the doctor scribbled out a prescription ultra quickly. I declined his prescription of Tetracycline as I want to avoid ingesting antibiotics unless I truly need to take them. Just last Saturday, I picked up the topical gels he prescribed for me - Differin and Benyclin. I'm suspicious of them and I am not happy taking prescription medications but I'm honestly sick of my skin. If I could afford to, I would happily see a homeopath. I'd rather be on the natural side of healing and organic products if I had my choice.

Anyway, with that being said, here's a good website to check out if you are looking for organic skincare or organic health products - LiveLifeOrganic.

They offer many products at lower prices, which is handy because living well and natural sometimes costs you a little more. They have skincare products for your face and body, household products, organic foods, and organic vitamins.

If my prescribed gels don't work for my skin, this is where I am headed next! I've had enough of spending money on harsh chemicals to treat my skin. I'd rather be using something natural and organic on my face!

So!

I should be writing this fabulous blog. You know, one that catches us up on everything that has happened in the last fews weeks. One that rants and raves about what a fantastic trip, without sparing you the sordid details. Believe me when I say that I want to.

However, I'm sitting before the computer and sweating. Sweating for all the wrong reasons. My twelve days in Manitoba was spent in sweltering hot temperatures. I return to Montreal for much of the same. I swear, this delicate flower is wilting.

I'll say this much - I had a blast. My last two trips back home were write-offs, being sick and all. This time rocked. I wasn't sick once! I saw friends, I spent tons of time with family, I kicked ass at American Idol on the Playstation, I took tons of photos (a lot, I'm afraid, weren't as artistic as I liked them to be), I got new glasses, I got a haircut, I spent waaay too much money on cheap shopping (A sweater for $6.99! Capri pants for $9.99!), and so on and so forth.

The downsides, other than the heat, were the terrible mosquitoes and the water. I don't know what it is but Winnipeg water tastes like dirt, even with a water filtering system. Selkirk water is incredibly bad. Not to mention, Manitoba water makes my hair and skin look like crap. Oh, and it always sucks to say bye and feeling like old friends have drifted away because of distance.

I will write in depth of my trip. Perhaps, I will do a photo-blog about it on my other blog. Looks like I exceeded the amount of photos for my Flickr, so I'll either upgrade or find somewhere else to post them. Until then, hang on tight for a real update and for me to get back into the swing of things where this blog is concerned.

My Trip to the Dermatologist

I waited three months to see a dermatologist.

I have complained and talked about my skin before in this blog. For those of you who do not know, I don't have the greatest skin. It is not as bad as before (it was terrible when I was 14 and around 21 years of age) but I still have slight scarring from hormonal cystic acne break-outs. Around PMS, I will have the occasional cystic acne...but as I mentioned, it is not as bad as before. In fact, my skin doesn't look that bad compared to years ago. With age, it is beginning to look pretty good. However, I'm 30 years old and it feels like my face is still 15 - haha. I'm sick of breaking out and I'm sick of the slight scarring. All I want is nice skin for once.

I waited three months for this appointment with the dermatologist.

I pretty much figured that my options were slim as I don't want to go on birth control pills, Accutane, or anti-biotics as suggested when I was 14 and going to the dermatologist. I thought, however, that there might be some other options to explore as it's been over ten years since I saw a dermatologist.

I waited three months to see this dermatologist and I felt like such a number. I was in and out of his room in a matter of minutes. He never asked me about my skin or what medications I have tried in the past, he did not tell me anything about my skin, or even ask "how are you today?". He asked me what I wanted, he took a look at my skin, and wrote a prescription. I seriously waited longer to get fast food compared to the time I spent in the doctor's room. I felt so rushed that I did not get the chance to ask him about another skin concern or a general question about heat rash (my partner is suffering from this at the moment). And I understand that I do live in Quebec but the guy could barely speak English.

Why is that I have to wait three months to see a specialist when he only gives me three minutes of his time? It doesn't seem fair especially when you think of how much money he makes out of my three minute visit!

He gave me a presciption for tetracycline and two different topical gels. Chances are, I won't use this prescription. He never told me what the side effects of these medications are, he never told me if they can be used with the thyroid medication that I am on, and he seemed defensive when I told him that I was on anti-biotics when I was a teen and it didn't work.

I can say this - when I was a teen, I saw a really wonderful dermatologist. He took the time to talk to you, he cared, and he thoroughly explained medications and skincare to you. You could tell he had children of his own. He was warm and gentle and professional. He did not rush you out in a matter of three minutes after a three month long wait to see him.

Anyway, my friend manages a health store. She suggested a number of things that I will look over when I go back home for a little holiday. Maybe I'll ask my family doctor for another referral to a different dermatologist too.

Or maybe I'll just have to live with less than perfect skin as I have been doing since I was 14 years old. Sigh!

Heck, I'm Ukrainian and a Manitoban - we love our cheap deals and sales! So I come across this site and realize - I don't think I can use these coupons (as far as I can see) because I live in stinkin' Canada, haha.

Yes, I have been a stranger. And yes, I do apologize for my lack of effort with this blog as of late. I can throw you all bits and pieces of excuses, if you'd like!?

Well, the newest addition to our household has been a dog. I never had one before so it's been a whole new experience for me. It's a good thing - we rescued a dog from abuse and gave him a safe home where he is loved. For me, it's learning how to be strict and dominent. The last two weeks have been interesting and, I have to say, a little taxing on my head and heart. There are a lot of things floating around in both places right now. As far as the dog goes, perhaps I will put up a picture slideshow of the mutt for you all to see - his name is Toshio, by the way.

As well, I got myself one of those fun, springtime colds. I feel weak and I can't seem to type. I won't be putting a picture slideshow of how I look right now...haha, that would be scary.

Speaking of picture slideshows, I'm contemplating making one to show all the different eye looks/cosmetic designs I could come up with. I think it would be cool, even though I am doubting my so-called creative talent at the moment.

I should probably write when I'm in better spirits. I hope all you faithful readers are having a good day, however.

Hair

Freshly cut bangs = happiness.

I need a little happiness, I need a little bang trim. Badly. My bangs have gotten to the point of no return. I am forced to sculpt, if you will, my bangs in place with my bare hands. With this method, my bangs will stay in place for a good hour. A minute past that hour, it collapses like a house of cards. Tomorrow, hopefully, I will get my bangs trimmed and then I'll stop growling at the mirror. Speaking of my hair, I think I can honestly say that I am officially sick of it.

Back in the day, when I had money to toss around carelessly on whatever I pleased, I had some pretty cool hair. And when it wasn't "cool", I was trying fun things with it regardless of the outcome. I guess it comes in handy to work in a salon, like I did back then. As well, I knew some pretty amazing people in the hair business. I had so much fun with my stylist back then. Not only did she do a fantastic job, she had a heart of gold. She was one of those people that you just had to smile with. She saw the beauty in a lot of things, in a lot of people. She always made me feel beautiful and it wasn't because she was an awesome stylist. It was more than just that. She simply was a beautiful person herself, inside and out, who got herself into a bit of mess that I cannot elaborate on.

I haven't really let people mess with my hair since her, other than my mom and a few others. Needless to say, my hair has done nothing exciting for a long time. It's long. It gets caught in things. It strangles me in my sleep. My bangs look fine when they are cut but the rest of it is just there.

I don't like depending and becoming attached to hair. I just want to chop it off without having second thoughts (it's easier to do so when your hair isn't long). I don't like to be caught in that cycle where you wonder and obsess on what-if-it-doesn't-look-good.

Anyway, in the grand scheme of things - this means nothing. It's just hair and I'm just complaining. I've let only about three people in my life cut my hair - my mom, my wonderful stylist, and the stylist at the salon I worked at. Truth is, I just don't trust anyone when it comes to hair.

I'm thinking about finding my old stylist when I go back home this summer. I sincerely hope life is treating her well again. I sincerely hope she is brimming with wonder and beauty again.

1) People who know me in "real" life, already know this. I feriously bite my fingernails. I loathe this habit of mine and I do not know how to stop. I can quit smoking just like that. Tell me stop biting my nails and it's impossible. I long to have long and sexy red nails. Sigh.

2) I used to have a major fear of the dentist. I would have reoccuring nightmares of losing my teeth, the enamel peeling off in layers, and a pillow full of teeth bits. This made me wait to see a dentist for way too many years. I learned my lesson and paid the price. I've had to get a lot of minor work done on my teeth. But, I am no longer afraid of the dentist! :)

3) Once again, people in "real" life and are close to me know this. My biggest physical insecurity is my skin. I had pretty bad cystic acne when I was a teenager and it's left scars on my face. It looks a lot better now but I still have some pretty embarrassing break-outs as a 30 year old. I'm seeing a dermatologist come June.

4) I would love to work in the beauty industry again - be it at a makeup counter or salon or somewhere else. However, the only thing that holds me back and makes me ill is the thought of dealing with bitchy clientele, women with terrible breath who expect me to apply their makeup comfortably, and superficial and catty salon owners and co-workers again. I swear, working in the beauty industry is worse than working in retail. But you never know what may be in store for me!

5) I once sold makeup to Bif Naked at the MAC Counter. As well, Burton Cummings of The Guess Who stopped by and yelled a question at me. That frightened me. On a different celebrity note, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith stopped by the music store I managed back home. He played with hair and said he liked my bangs. I'm no fan of Aerosmith but I still giggled when he kissed my cheek and asked me if I sold dirty movies. Tee hee.

I don't really have anyone to tag, other than myself at my other blog. Maybe I'll write five things about me and how I'm grateful and set it to photos...hmmm!

I'm a gal who loves her cosmetics and I'm not ashamed to admit it. I use cosmetics daily. I love to buy and browse at cosmetics counters. I have worked in the beauty industry. Nothing makes me happier than playing around with cosmetics - on myself and on others.

There are many products that I use on a daily basis and there are those that I use every so often. Here are my top five beauty products that I swear by, in no particular order.

1) L'Oreal Lineur Intense
I've been using liquid eyeliner for over half my life. I have used many different kinds and I have always been drawn back, no pun intended, to this particular brand. This product offers great control and a crisp line. It can be applied minimally or for more dramatic looks. It is long lasting, throughout the day and even a rainstorm! It applies and removes easily. It doesn't cost a lot and the product itself lasts a long time.

2) MAC concealer
I used to work at MAC Cosmetics but I discovered this concealer long before my career there. It comes in a handy pot. It can be applied gently with a fingertip or a firm brush. It provides excellent coverage without looking too heavy. There are many different shades for all different skin tone types. It lasts a long time so you won't have to go out a buy a new concealer every month. A little goes a long way with this product.

3) MAC Russian Red Lipstick
My look is dramatic, even on the most plainest of days. I appreciate a true red lipstick - one that screams sexy and sophisticated. If you are looking for a true, vibrant red, this is your best bet. The color is pure and applies perfectly. It doesn't bleed like most dramatic lipsticks. It is long lasting to create that red-hot look your lips deserve.

4) Avon Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover Lotion
Why spend all that money you could be spending on red-hot lipsticks and crisp eyeliners on an eye makeup remover? Avon's Moisture Effective Eye Makeup Remover Lotion is an excellent product. It's very cheap. It removes eye makeup perfectly, without stinging your eyes or causing redness. It lasts a long time. As well, Avon often offers this product on special so you'll save a good chunk of money you could be spending elsewhere.

5) MAC Eyepaint
I love MAC's line of eyepaints. I am disappointed that they discontinued many of the more dramatic colors in this line. However, if you want more natural and neutral tones - they have a grand selection. MAC Eyepaints are a cream-based shadow that can be applied directly to your eyelids. I've always been leery of cream shadows as they crease very easily after application. This one, however, does not crease. It is extremely long lasting, even when you apply a regular powder shadow in the crease of your eyelid. The colors are brilliant, with a slight shimmer. I am a fan of Pixel Eyepaint. It's a light white shimmery shadow that brightens your eyes without looking heavy or made-up. It comes in a handy tube (much like watercolor paints!) that lasts a long time. As well, it is also accepted in MAC's recycling program.

I'm always looking out for new cosmetics. Of course, I don't necessarily have the money for it but I like to look and I like to try! Lately, I've had champagne tastes on a beer budget. I think that's how the saying goes, anyhow.

Last year, my online friend from Oklahoma came up to stay with us. She showed me some of her super fun cosmetics that she got at a beauty mall (we don't really have them up here in Canada). Anyway, she told me all about her foundation/powder. I don't really feel comfortable calling it a powder foundation but it's along those lines. I was impressed at how perfect it looked and how long it lasted. She was shine-free. Her skin looked flawless even though she spent the entire weekend drunk, haha. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of this product! I should really ask her about it. I'm interested in trying it.

I got a heads-up from my sponsor (I feel funny writing that) about a new informercial that will be airing soon. It looks much like the powder/foundation that my friend had. It's called Naked Minerals. Call me dirty but I kinda like the name, heh! It looks interesting. Instead of the typical powder/foundation, it is a pressed mineral makeup. What's cool is that it comes in a shade of African-American women too. Anyway, I wish they could give me a free sample of the stuff to brag at as the only thing that totally throws me off from using this mineral makeup is the price. Yikes! By the way, the company also makes a colon cleaning product called "Almighty Cleanse". I don't know why, but it makes me laugh.

Anyway, has anyone ever used any mineral products before? If so, tell me all about it!

I like giving my readers a head-up on some great websites and deals out there. Some of them have no interest to me but you never know - one of my loyal readers just may be interested. As well, I have recently acquired a sponsor for this particular blog as you may have noticed with a few of my recent posts. Don't worry, I will still continue to write blogs here on a more personal note! That's the whole idea of a blog, right!?

Anyway, I came across this site called EnailSupply. It's an online beauty supply shop - much like those you can visit if you are a licensed beautician/stylist. They seem to specialize in nails and waxing. It would probably be the perfect site to go to if you were starting up your own personal salon out of your home.

I used to work at a nail salon/day spa. I won't lie. It was sheer hell. For that reason, browsing through this website seemed much more relaxed than browsing around the salon I worked at. Honestly, as a former salon employee and current nailbiter - I would prefer to shop online than deal with people who work in a salon, haha. Once they forced me to wear acrylic nails. Thankfully, I knew where to draw the line and refused fancy nail decals. I can, however, say that Essie and OPI polishes are pretty kick-ass.

RIP June Callwood

I realize this has nothing to do with makeup or beauty. However, Canada lost one of the best today. June Callwood - a strong woman who deserves to be acknowledged by the gals who read my blog. Last weekend, I watched the last interview with June Callwood on CBC's The Hour. It was beautiful, touching - what a marvelous lady she was, full of grace and wit. June Callwood, the remarkable Canadian journalist, humanitarian and social activist, died early Saturday after a long fight with cancer. She was 82.

She was first diagnosed with inoperable cancer in 2004, but refused treatment and continued to be active, most recently on the campaign to end child poverty, until a few months ago.

Callwood blazed trails for women's rights, gay rights and the rights of the underprivileged in a history of activism dating back to the 1960s.

The author of 30 books, she was also the founder of a breast-cancer support centre, Nellie's hostel for abused women, Jessie's centre for teenage mothers and the AIDS hospice Casey House.

"The Casey House community is deeply appreciative to the Frayne family for sharing their precious mother and wife with us for so many years," said Jaime Watt, chair of the hospice's board of directors, in a statement. "We send them our love and deepest condolences."

Callwood was a founding member of the Writers' Union of Canada, the Writers' Development Trust, Canadian PEN, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Canadian Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws, the president of a prostitutes' community organization and a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada.

A tireless campaigner who harangued politicians, wrote letters and organized lobby groups, Callwood fought poverty and injustice wherever she saw it.

"She was gentle to a fault ... She wasn't called Saint June for nothing," said friend and writer Sally Armstrong.

Always dressed chicly and known for driving a sporty car, Callwood approached social justice with a smile and joyful, optimistic demeanour. Even living with cancer didn't seem to get her down.

"As a companion, June is self-aware, witty, non-judgmental, sophisticated, informed, passionate, available and loyal — all those special qualities, leavened with her own brand of quirkiness and self-deprecating irony," friend Sylvia Fraser wrote in Toronto Life in March 2005.

Takes on journalism challenge

Born June 2, 1924, in Belle River, Ont., a French-speaking community near Windsor, Callwood remembered the deprivation of the Depression years and a father who left the family when she was 13.

She found her way into newspaper writing during the Second World War, initially at the Brantford Expositor and later at the Globe and Mail.

At the Globe, she met and married sportswriter Trent Frayne, and quit her job at age 20 when she had her first child.

She and Frayne had four children — Jill, Brant, Jennifer and Casey — losing the youngest, Casey, in 1982 in a motorcycle accident when he was 20.

After a period spent raising her children, Callwood began freelance writing, starting with a magazine piece on her flying instructor, a woman named Violet Millsted. She wrote for Chatelaine and Maclean's, tackling such subjects as the sexual abuse of children, birth control, test-tube babies and the battle of the sexes.

It was later, when her children were adolescent hippies, that Callwood began her social activism.

"What brought me on to it was during the '60s in Yorkville — that was my watershed," she said in an interview with CBC Radio.

A hippie at heart

Callwood said she was "entranced by the hippie movement," but noticed that when hippie kids from the Toronto suburbs went home there was an underclass of homeless, poor youth remaining in Yorkville.

"Everyone thought it was a middle-class kids' revolt. What was going underneath [was] that despair of thousands of teenagers who've never had anything and thought for one brief crazy moment that there was a place for them," she said.

Already a founding member of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, she tried to get help and health care for the poor homeless youth, and saw doors slammed in their faces.

"That politicized me — that did it," she said. She founded a house, Yorkville Digger House, for them to live in.

In the summer of 1968, Callwood was arrested for protesting against police conduct in Yorkville. "I thought I was ruined," she recalled in an article in Saturday Night magazine.

"In my generation, you didn't get arrested unless you were an awful person. One year later, I was B'nai Brith Woman of the Year!"

Founded shelter, hostel for teens

A prominent voice against sexual violence and domestic abuse, she was founder of Nellie's Hostel for Women, a shelter for abused women in Toronto, serving as its first director in 1974. She also founded Jessie's Centre for pregnant teenagers.

She continued to write prolifically on feminist topics — penning Love, Hate, Fear and Anger (1964), Canadian Women and the Law (1974) and The Law Is Not for Women (1976).

Other books from this period include Emma: The True Story of Canada's Unlikely Spy, the story of a young Doukhobor woman from Saskatchewan convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and imprisoned in the late 1940s, and Twelve Weeks in Spring, about the last months of a friend named Margaret Fraser, who died at home with the help of a group of friends and volunteers.

"Someone in that group said to me that being with Margaret was like studying — we were boning up for our own deaths," she said in a 2004 interview with the Globe and Mail.

"It was a huge gift to us, in fact, because there's a great pleasure in providing palliative care, in surrendering your own ego totally in order to stay in tune with the person you're trying to help. You're not calling the shots for once. You're not doing anything except getting the ice cream."

Callwood's next big project was Casey House Hospice, for people dying of AIDS, which opened in 1988 at a time when there was little effective treatment for the disease.

Faced accusations of racism

With her direct, shoot-from-the-hip style, Callwood was described as better at founding organizations than at running them.

She was disparaged by public accusations of racism in the late 1980s, a period of extreme political correctness.

A conference she organized for the Canadian branch of PEN International was picketed by local black writers for excluding writers of colour, despite PEN's plan to bring in writers dedicated to freedom of speech from Ghana, South America and India.

The bad vibrations around the dispute spilled over into her term as a director of Nellie's, where an employee accused her of racism and the board boycotted a fundraiser it had asked her to organize.

There followed months of accusations in the press, with Callwood portrayed as an insensitive WASP, despite her years of activism and Métis background.

"Except for my son's death, nothing in life had hurt so much," she said in a Toronto Life article.

Callwood had two TV programs, In Touch on CBC (1975-78) and Callwood's National Treasures (Vision TV 1991-96), and also a column in the Globe and Mail that highlighted social issues.

She continued writing about AIDS in Jim: A Life With AIDS (1988) and Trail Without End: A Shocking Story of Women and Aids in 1995, the story of 20 women infected with the AIDS virus by the same lover. She also wrote Callwood's National Treasures, a book of portraits of great Canadians.

She has been an awards judge for Governor General's Literary Awards, National Newspaper Awards, 1976-83, and National Magazine Awards.

Callwood was made member of the Order of Canada in 1978 and officer in 1986, and has won numerous humanitarian awards and honorary university doctorates.

She points out that her effectiveness in leading change evolved from her energy and work, instead of privilege.

"I don't have power — I have influence," she said. "Power and privilege? It's an ability to help to change. My prominence is a trust."

A park in Toronto's Fort York neighbourhood has been named after her.

Make-Up Mistress Update

Well, well, well! It's been a while. My most sincere apologies, my loyal readers - all five of you! Seriously though, I share the computer with my partner who spends much of his time on it. It's a little difficult to write quirky and sassy blogs while he's pacing behind me, waiting to answer his emails. Ah! But I have some alone time with you readers today!

I have yet to find a good loose face powder. Truth be told, I haven't really looked that hard for one. I searched the internet with the few suggestions that my lovely readers gave me. I haven't committed to any brand yet because I just don't know. I want to try it out or at least see it with my own eyes. I think if I had much more money to blow, I would order some of the No7 powder that Ellie told me about. It looks fun and I've seen her makeup in photographs - so I can trust her opinion. From searching about the internet, I could find no supplier in Canada nor did I find any auctions on eBay. I'm back at square one and the need for a new powder is much stronger. Due to my clumsy hands, I have dropped my pressed powder. Not once...but twice. Needless to say, I now have loose powder - for all the wrong reasons. It's a mess but I don't know what to buy next. Decision making is not my strong point! I keep thinking about Clinique - I wonder what their powders are like? Has anyone tried them? Any more suggestions?

I haven't tried much in the way of new cosmetics lately. I did, however, receive an Avon mascara in the mail. My mom is such a sweetheart. She always seems to know what I am running out of, even when I don't tell her. Mascara is another issue for me. I can never find one that completely satisfies me. Perhaps, I am simply picky. I have pretty pathetic little eyelashes and I find that most mascara only color my lashes, not lengthen or thicken as promised. As well, a lot of the wand applicators are quite wide and my eye makeup ends up looking a bit messy. I just may write a little blurb about the Avon mascara soon!

The biggest news in my world of beauty? I finally bit the bullet and booked an appointment to see a dermatologist again. I used to see a dermatologist when I was a teenager. I needed to - I had pretty bad acne that left scarring on me. Not only did I have acne on my face, I had acne on my back - on my upper arms - on my chest....AND I was a teenaged girl. Needless to say, those awkward teenaged years were a little bit hellish! I took many medications, maybe antibiotics. Nothing ever worked, unfortunately. I stopped seeing the doctor when the last resort was birth control and Accutane. I refused to go on the pill back then as I do today. I don't like messing around with my hormones like that. And Accutane - I've heard the horror stories and it simply scared me back then. I remember the dermatologist showing me what a baby would look like if I got pregnant on Accutane. Good Lord, it was like a sketch from a bad science fiction comic. No thanks. I made the decision to live with it, accept it, and looked forward to growing out of it. It could always be worse, right?

Well, looks like I never did grow out of it. Of course, my skin got A LOT better. I no longer break out on my back, shoulders, or chest - THANK GOD (nor do I have scars). My face is another story. Though it can be a hell of a lot worse, I have always been fairly insecure about my skin. I still have scars on my face. I still break out in scarring acne. For those who have had cystic acne, it is not fun. They hurt. They cannot be concealed. They hang around like bad news. And then they leave a lovely scar. I may be thirty years old but my face is still stuck at 14. Actually, I hate talking about this and even writing about this. I know...I know it can be worse. But for once, and for fear of sounding like a Morrissey song, please...let me get what I want and have clear and perfect skin for once in my life.

So, I'm going to the dermatologist. I would prefer to go the homeopathic route as I did before I moved but it is pricier (I have a friend who is a Homeopath back home). I'm hoping to hear there is something out there that I can actually take. Something that will not mess up my hormones. Something that won't require me to take birth control. Something that isn't antibiotics. Otherwise, I am truly stuck with it.

My appointment is in June. I'll be sure to let y'all know the outcome. Keep your fingers crossed!

L'Oreal's Vive Pro Shampoo

It's been a while since I have posted. My apologies!

I used to be a salon snob. In all fairness, I worked in salons. I knew the products on the shelf - I sold them and I used them. I was a big fan of Rusk products, as my own personal stylist was a Rusk regional trainer at the time. That was a good time in the history of my hair.

And then I moved here. No longer working in salons or having the contacts (old co-workers could still order me products at cost because I was well-loved), I was forced back into the tragic world of buying shampoo at the dread drugstore. The first time I bought a drugstore shampoo I almost felt like crying. I could no longer afford to buy salon products. I know, I know - what a sad tale! Haha!

Anyway, I've been using either Pantene Pro-V or L'Oreal's Color Vive shampoos and conditioners ever since. I've been fairly happy, once I got used to drugstore products again. Recently, I noticed that L'Oreal changed their Vive line of shampoos and conditioners and I thought - what the hell, I'll give it a try. I'm worth the five bucks.

Boy, was I wrong. I thought it was just me. I thought, maybe I have been careless at the art of washing my hair. It's long so it gets dirty quicker. I washed it again. I tried it one more time. And yet again. The results have been constant - my hair feels like absolute crap when I wash my hair with their Vive Pro line of shampoos and conditioners. I feel like I wasted five dollars...and when you are on a budget, it kind of sucks.

First of all, I can't stand the scent of the product. It used to smell nice, refreshing. Now, it smells like candy. It's too sweet and I can't stand it.

Secondly, and most importantly, it doesn't make my hair feel clean. It feels dry and yet oily. It makes my hair look stringy and it feels gummy. I leave for work in the morning far from satisfied. My hair looks like crap. I can't believe how awful this new formula is.

Thirdly, and not important at all, I hate the color of the packaging. It's bright orange. Orange can be cool, especially for creating some sort of 70's atmosphere...but for shampoo, it looks terribly outdated. It doesn't look sleek and professional. It's, of course, a minor detail.

Yes, I have discovered that I hate this product a lot. It makes me want to constantly wash my hair...and that's not a good sign. I swallowed my schemes of budgeting and bought myself another bottle of shampoo today. I may sound ultra lame but I hate knowing that I just wasted my hard earned five bucks.

Le sigh!

Surfin' Around

Ah, the Make-Up Mistress is tragically suffering from a headache today. Aunt Flow has hit with a vengence this time around, making me cranky and making my head pound and helping me feel like a walking balloon. I have another Saturday off and I had plans of writing an interesting blog about the new products I have tried and fun makeup techniques I have playing with. Alas, my head feels like a two-ton heavy thing.

Instead, I was searching about the web for interesting websites for women. I came across a site called WomanSavers. I was hoping to find some makeup advice, tips, and information. You know, a site that brings women together in many aspects.

What I discovered was that the website's motto is "research and rate B4U date". They are, apparently, the leader in online men's database ratings since 2003. It is to help other women with dating - primarily, warning other women before they date your ex. I don't really know what to think of this.

I have ex, just like everyone else, that I think should come with a warning label. It would say something like - "Proceed with Caution" or "Danger!" (in a 1950's robot voice). I'm not sure, however, if I would go to the extreme to post their photograph and write a blurb about the horrors of dating him. To each their own, I suppose.

I was curious. I did a search people I knew and I felt a bit strange doing so. My search came up empty and I'm kind of glad. I like to think that there is some good in everyone and maybe my experience was just one simple shitty time, moving us forward to become better people to ourselves and the people we spend time with.

A good thing about this website is that they do have helpful intentions. All the money made from this particular website is donated to charities that help abused women and children. I think that aspect is great - I just don't know what to think of the website in general.

First Day of Spring!

To welcome the first day of spring, I colored my eyelids with a lovely combination of bright and dark green. Clearly, it did not go over well with the girl in the subway who called me a bitch for no apparent reason, haha.

I was also inspired by another gal's makeup I saw last night on an online dating site. No, I wasn't looking for a "prince charming" - I'm happy with the one I've got. Every once in a while, I browse online dating websites to find eligible ladies for my wonderful and single friend back home. As well, to have a bit of a chuckle.

So in the midst of hilarious, desperate, and a few sincere profiles, I was taken aback by this one woman's profile pic. Her eye makeup was amazing! I can't even describe it, it was that stunning. Her eyeshadow looked like a dewy meadow - such a beautiful emerald green that lit up her face and made her look intoxicatingly mysterious at the same time. Ah, I totally had makeup envy! I could never wear green like that!

Speaking of which, does anyone have a favorite green eyeshadow they swear by?

Anyway, besides being green with envy - I had a few laughs while browsing this particular website. There are A LOT of makeup disasters going on in the world of online dating. I'm sure they all have hearts of gold but they could definitely use some tips on applying black eyeliner. Yikes!
