Steve Bruce has returned to his native north-east as manager of Sunderland, leaving Wigan Athletic to search for a replacement.Bruce, 48, who supported Sunderland's arch-rivals Newcastle United as a boy, has signed a three-year contract, the club said.He takes over from interim coach Ricky Sbragia, who stood down at the end of the season after replacing Roy Keane during a campaign in which Sunderland only escaped relegation on the final day.Bruce, who spent the bulk of his playing career at Manchester United, has managed Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Wigan twice, Crystal Palace and Birmingham City since retiring as a player in 1999.He guided Wigan to 11th place this season, while Sunderland finished two places above the relegation zone in 16th.His appointment was the first significant change for Sunderland since American businessman Ellis Short assumed complete control of the club in May.
"It's the perfect time, I've worked 10 or 11 years in management for an opportunity at a club like this one," Bruce told a televised news conference at Sunderland's academy."You are always looking for a big challenge and to take the next step and this is the perfect step for me and I can't wait to get started."This is what I've always wanted. A big club with a big challenge and a huge ambition and it's up to me know to put a team on the pitch to take the club forward."
Chairman Niall Quinn said: "He's going to bring a vital ingredient that I think has been missing at our club and that's a mentality and a strength that will drive us to where we need to be."He knows all too well what football means to this region. Throughout his playing and managerial career he epitomised what it means to be a football person from the north-east and I look forward to our club representing those values on the pitch."If we can get the steel into our dressing room that Steve brings I think it will bring rewards for our club."
Sunderland paid Wigan an undisclosed amount in compensation for Bruce's services and both clubs praised each other for the honourable way in which the deal was done."Niall is a perfect gentleman. Was it such a shock, well it was becoming quite evident there was trouble in the camp, perhaps roys management style, who knows, but no one can say that roy change our club for the good, the attitude and greater respect we get from the prem.

I dont want to dwell, just to say thanks roy, you set the foundations, and the next manager will have a good chunk of the dirty work done by roy.

As i say below, i am a positive man, and remain pos, and ask myself questions after this bad beat, are we a better side than last year?, well yes, where are are weaknesses, needa center half, an a bit of a run for confidence, and sometin not mentioned is the 1st team squad numbers, tooooo big, can cause unrest amongst players not gettin a game, healey, bardsley, tiano, chops etc, squad rotation can work as long as u dont have to many players me thinks!
Is roy the man 4 the job? well who else would u put in? so to me, he is still the man, but he needs to sign his contract, loyalty cuts both ways.

so what now, man u away, no chance, but we have 3 games after that to put things right, wba, hull, and blackburn, perhaps our season, and roys fate will be decided after these games, in my opinion lets not throw the baby out with the bath water like the other lot down the road.

Well, as a positive guy, i looked through our results since we spanked the scum, so here is my simple assesment.

Stokies 0-1
As the wife is a stokie, i have to be carefull!, but not a nice place to go, cold, windy, and full of clayheads! we should have hada point there, we where not up for the enevitable fight, but we have the quality to get sometin from the likes of stoke, wind or no wind! perhaps the cold etc is not for our non english players? my score 0-0

Chelsea 0-5
No even gona go here, dissapointed with the 5, my opinion if it was my team, i would go 4-3-3 and be happy with them scorin 5, long as we havea a right go at them, can never understand, especialy 2nd half why teams dont have a right go at the top 4, crowd dont expect a win, but expect our team to show some balls. my score 5-4!!! lol

In all honesty, i believe we played well against a small club come good, top players, and becoming a consistent top 6 side, we played some good stuff, and again, our back 4 weaknesses are shown up against the better sides. my score 1-1

Blackburn 1-2 cup
If the chance to play some of our younger players, and try a few different things gives roy more options, the defeat would have been worth it, but as a 70s guy, cup games where for winning, no argument! my score 3-0

Blackburn 2-1
Direct, strong, simple, and with balls, thats more like it, as weeks go on, i dont feel we are a bad side, just lackin a bit of concentration, and confidence, pleased with this one, to be honest, fancied a draw here!!! my score 1-1

West ham 0-1
I know we are called the black cats, but wheres our luck eh!, and is it me, or are we havin the rough end of refs decisions, and why is it you always seam to loose more games you should have won, rather than the other way round!!! but still playin at times some good stuff, just have to be more consistant, , and my mates a north londoner!! bugga. my score 4-0

So bein honest, we play some good stuff , better than last year, not consistant enough, we need a run to boost belief n confidence, a bita luck, and perhaps a centre half, sorry noz dont do it for me.

PR for SAFC with regard to the club logo being erected in

Today was a day when we realy fancied our chances, and the game as it went on, we thought one goal will do it, and yep, in good old premier league fashion, the ref stole the show!

The branch turnout was as good as ever with the a good collection of tourists supportin the lads.

Graham, in the white, and gary, the one balding at the front with a pony tail to compensate pictured, can be seen here keepin an eye on the game, and the buffett!!

But back to the match, dont realy want to go into the detail, thats the sunday papers job, but as a football supporter, and a 70s one at that, you get to a stage where you stop shrugging your sholders and say, well at least we got a point, and start asking at what stage does leaning into a wall become an offence, when leaning into an attacker is deamed as good defending?

As a side, we look like we can do some damage, and as a defence, i am in the collins camp, noz, good, but he scares me to death some times, we looked good going forward, and i now look up the league, not down, now that has to be a poz for a longstanding sunderland supporter!

But, hey who can dwell on this game when we have the pleasure of the black n whiters to come, ooooh i just cant wait!!!

Welcome to the malaga mackems, we are a bunch of ex pat sunderland supporters, living in benalmadena, and missin the lads!, so as all tribal footie supporters do, we formed a branch!, any excuse for a pint you might say, but hey, who are we to lie!!!

although the branch is in its youth, the committee, and most of the members, with the exeption of our landlady rena, and any other female member {creep!} are old enough to remember benno and speedy, frank worthington, and even joe bolton!!!

Matchdays consist of a collection of beer, a sing song, and a free buffet, which you have to have a go on the blind card for haha!!, so if you are passing, then pop in and introduce yourselves, fill us in on the local gossip, and we will put your picture on our blog!!! F.T.M
