Daydreamin about Summer

Mmm summer…oh how I miss it in these boring winter months. I guess it could be worse, there could be 3ft of snow on the ground and it could be 10*. Now that I think of it, it hasn’t been a bad winter, above average temperatures and only a couple little snowfalls have made it a pretty decent one. But its just boring. No color across the land and only a pale blue sky. Just yuck. It’d be awful nice if we could just skip from Christmas to March! Never fails about the time January and February hits, I start longing for that first taste of warm weather. I always wait to hear the Killdees(killdeer) come back, their constant squawking always signals that Spring is almost here. First few days of 70* weather makes everything wake up and the whole world comes alive. Leaves pop out on the trees and the yard greens ups overnight. Spring in the Osage is gorgeous. Plain and simple gorgeous I tell ya! Spring burns will start about the first of March. Talk about makin it feel like Spring. The smell of grass smoke on the evening wind…the smoky haziness of the air, the sound of the fire trucks…I love it! Those burns always seem to kinda announce Spring’s arrival. After a little rain, the burnt grounds turn green and the deer and buffalo flock to the tender green grass. The killdees(killdeer) squawk 24/7 , robins sing from the treetops and turkeys start getting all twitterpated. March fades into April, bringing Spring rains, thunderstorms, strong south winds and baby buffalo….oh and my birthday. ;) Orange babies dot the herds of buffalo, never getting far from their mama’s sides. The nights don’t get as cold and the afternoons get up into the 70s. Fans stay in the bedroom windows and draw in that cool night air. I swear if you’ve never slept good until you’ve slept in a room with a fan in the window on a April night! Clothes and bedding gets hung out on the clothesline all day, making them smell like heaven. April turns into May, and Summer starts trying to sneak up on us. Summer in Osage County can be anywhere from mild to brutal. Some years will have tolerable temperatures and good rains and other years we can have temperatures that reach above 105* and little to no rainfall. Last summer was like that…one of the hottest, driest summers on record for the part of Oklahoma. We’ll set the pool up about mid June and the contest to see who can get the darkest tan will be on! By July its usually getting pretty hot, but the early mornings and late evenings aren’t too bad. Oh how I miss those evenings where the sun doesn’t set till 8:30 or 9…the smell of fresh cut grass and watermelon, muddin and fishing. Fresh Bass sounds so good. Mmm fried fish, tators and ketchup and maybe a little lemonade or sweet tea. You can’t buy a meal like that at McDonalds lemmie tell ya! About the end of July, Bass Brothers will start shipping out their steers. Cattle trucks will roar down the hill southwest of the house on the county road, the lights on their trucks and trailers looking like Christmas parade floats. More than once, one has missed the corner and ended up driving up the Bunkhouse driveway, usually getting either stuck out in front of the bunkhouse or hung up in the parking lot. 99% of my July evening are spent at the shop with dad where he’s either working on one of his trucks or fixing a trailer tire for Northcutt. Ol Northcutt is a pretty interesting feller, him, his two sons and whoever loads up with him, help Bass Brothers during shippin. You’ll never see him without a truck full of kids and a trailer full of horses. He’s just a good ol cowboy. He never fails to find something to pester me about though!haha Dad usually goes and helps Bass Brothers ship a couple days. A year before last I went with him quite a bit, riding in the sook truck and taking pictures of the cowboys as they gathered cattle horseback. After shippin’s over, summer seems to start fading out. The TGP might do a little summer burning and offer a good opportunity for me to go take some fire pictures, but other than that, it starts getting a little boring. August turns into September and another Summer’s over. The cool weather is welcomed with open arms by everybody and even I look forward to a break in the hot temperatures. But come October, I’ll hear a song that reminds me of Summer and I’ll start missing it again. There’s just something about the warm weather and the smell of grass smoke and fresh cut grass, the taste of fried fish and potatoes, the way cool pool water feels on a hot day, being able to walk around outside barefoot and the way the days seem to last forever, that I love. I’ll spend Fall and Winter missing it, anticipating sound of Killdees and that first blast of warm weather when Spring hits the Osage and it all comes alive again…

My laptop battery kicked the bucket last night, so I'm stuck with using my phone for facebooking, blogging ect ect until next week. But I have found out that I can type up a blog post faster on my phone than on my laptop! I got speedy texting fingers(thumbs) doncha know;)
Anyways! I've been setting here for the last 30 minutes going through all the pictures on my phone and I've discovered a bunch of good ones and some strange/interesting ones that I don't remember taking...

I was bound and determined to get up on time to see the first sunrise of 2012 this morning! So with the alarm on my phone set for 7:00am, I went to bed at 10:00 last night, bidding 2011 G.O.O.D.B.Y.E!
My alarm went off on time and I jumped up, threw some clothes on and went out in door with my camera in hand. I was a little early but that gave me time to ~~pester~~ pet the horses...well I did once I convinced them to come to me...

But eventually, they got tired of listening to my persistent whistling and they came to me

Hmm well today hasn't been too exciting...just hung around the house and tried to stay warm! Finished decorating the Christmas tree and assisted Little Britches in putting Christmas lights on dad's deer skulls above the fire place(yes, we're so redneck-y that we decorate our deer skulls/mounts) Anyway what else...OH! I got my hair cut and colored yesterday annnnnd I'm now....

I should really think about cleaning the mirror in my bathroom.

Blonde! That's not the best picture but you can still see my blllloooonnnde hair!!haha

So yeah that's been the highlight of my week.

We did a little Christmas shoppin yesterday when we went to ol P-town. Managed to pick up presents for both of my aunts, uncle's girlfriend, cousins, best friend, Little Britches and mama let me pick out a G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S turquoise necklace for myself...but it had to be wrapped up and put under the tree:/ Haha oh well I guess I'll just halfta wait till Christmas to wear it!

Welp I guess that's all I got to post about tonight!

Hmm already December is it? Doesn't seem like it should be but I guess it is. And of course that means Christmas shopping and everything that entails, colder weather, watching the NRF Finals with dad, and all that good stuff. Deer season ended with a bang(literally) last Friday when I killed this big honk daddy of a buck;

That was seriously the LONGEST I've ever hunted for a deer. Oh and get this, after hunting all over the place, I killed him about 60 yards away from the yard fence when he chased a doe through the horsetrap. The horses weren't too bothered with it, seein's how all they did was trot back towards the barn after I shot.

Away that's been about the biggest excitement around here in the last couple weeks.

Tomorrow we're goin to town to do some Christmas shoppin and I'm gettin my hair cut + some blonde highlights in it.

It's sure enough turning into winter out here in the Osage; just plain ol COLD! I'm talkin hooded sweat shirts, Carheart coats, wild rags and felt hats every time you go outside. Now if it would just snow, I'd be happy!

I guess that's all I've got to post about tonight, I'll try to get some new pics and post 'em soon!

Hiiiii! Remember me? Yep I'm back. Again. And I got pictures! Lots and lots of pictures of the buffalo working!

How would you like to run everyone of these huge beasty's through a cattle squeeze chute? Maybe chase them down the alleys at the buffalo pens in a feedtruck that has no brakes(At. All.)? Stand on a catwalk beside the tub and push them into the chute with rattle paddles and hot shots? Yall have no earthly clue what I'm talking about huh? Alright let me explain....

Every November all 2700(+/- a few) head of buffalo that the TGP runs up here, get gathered into the traps by the buffalo pens. Day after day they get sooked into the traps, each trap being smaller and closer to the pens than the last. Finally a few(about 45 to 50 I'd say) get pushed into a holding pen by the pens and eventually they're pushed thru a maze of alleys and they end up here:

In the main big alley. They sort off about 10 or so and run them up the alley closer to the tub...

Then they get pushed into the tub itself...

Then one by one the buffalo are pushed into the chute(thats there by Lauren)....

Annnd then while everybody up at the front chute takes care off the buffalo (i.e gives them shots, checks ear tags ect ect), everybody at the back has important life conversations about hot shots not working:

They end up down here at the big chute, where Perry, Bob, Jack and Danny give them their yearly checkup.

And then after everything's done...

....away they go out into the pen and wait to be turned back out!

And 7 days later, they're all turned back out into the big pastures...the calves were branded and ear tagged, old bulls and cows were sorted off and sold and everything was happily ever after, the end!

Whoa whoa whoa wait a minute. This post AIN'T over with!

Now for more pics! We had my uncle, his two girls, Jaime(his lady friend), her two boys, my aunt, Little Britches, mama, and me at the pens.

Something must've been funny

We spent probably 5 hours at the pens watching the guys work the buffalo, then we came home, jabbered and talked, everybody left, I thanked God in heaven above that I survived the day with all the kids ect ect. Hahaha just kiddin, It was a fun day!

I took 335 pictures that day, I spent the next day editing them and making up a picture slide show dvd for all the guys. Then finally on the last day of the working, I gathered up all the DVDs and headed for the shop. Everybody liked it :)

After 2 or 3 hours, everybody started to clear out and that wrapped up Buffalo Workin 2011.....it surprisingly went over well, none of the trucks got tore up too bad, nobody go run over, dad didn't smack anyone with a rattle paddle...all that good stuff. Hahaha

I can't wait till I turn 18 so I can go work at the buffalo working :)

So ok I guess this post can be over with now!

First day of September and it's 103* and not hardly any wind. And its been like this for the last 4 months. No rain. Ziltch. Notta. None. NO RAIN! The yard's been mowed maybe 10 times all summer and you basically get a dust bath when you do mow it. There's 2 inch cracks in the ground and its as hard as my head...and believe me, that's hard. The creeks and ponds are goin dry and the hay meadows made about half of what they usually make. -sigh- I'm sick of this weather! But there is light at the end of this hot, dry tunnel; next week is supposed to be in the 80s for highs! Thank you Jesus!
Enough with the whining, let's talk about my summer.
I've finally learned how to swim(don't laugh), learned how to drive a truck with a standard, cut my hair off/got highlights for the first time, spent 99% of my time in at the shop with dad, running tractors and air impacts and such. That's pretty much my summer in a nutshell! It's been too hot to fish, too hot to ride the horses, too hot to hunt hogs and too freakin hot to do ANYTHING outside unless it's early in the morning or right before dark.
But I have taken a few pictures tho and this has been one of the beset ones of the summer:

I know I've got some new pictures of the horses to post somewhere, I'm just gonna halfta find 'em!

Now hopefully Summer will decide to leave SOON and it'll cool off to where I can get outside some.

But for now, I'm gonna sit right here under the A/C and be happy :)
