McKinney Falls Adventure

Every now and then Aaron has a "slow" day on the school front and we are able to head out for a family day. On April Fool's Day we headed south of Austin to explore McKinney Falls State Park. (By the way, the kids April Fool's joke to me was delivered by Owen: "Mommy, I pooped in my pants!").

Well, what a fun, busy weekend we all had! Mimi and Papi drove down from Lubbock and stayed with us, while Numna and Bee stayed at my mom and dad's house. The dads did a little shooting, the kids got to do some swimming, the ladies sat by the pool and enjoyed a relaxing lunch, we all went to a great little Easter party/egg hunt, we dyed eggs, ate a fun outdoor dinner with my sister and the rest of the family (13 in all), and that was just Saturday!! We got home really late and still had to make sure everything was ready for the Easter Bunny. (Owen is in green, Mason in teal).

4-9-12 Easter

Jack - Seven Months

Not much to say except that it is pretty clear that this family is in LOVE with this guy!! Owen and Mason argue over who gets the spot in the car with the best "Jack view!" I am constantly hearing them say "but Jack distracted me!" I have to agree, it is hard to get much done around here when he's awake. All we want to do is play with him and watch all the cute and new things he is doing. Such a perfect addition to our family!

At seven months, Jack:

weighs 16 lbs, 15 ounces - 25th percentile.
is 26.5" tall - 25th percentile.
has had several nights of sleeping about 9 hours straight, and as a result, he FINALLY sleeps in his own, very adorable room!
goes to bed awake, sometimes with a protest, sometimes not. His protesting can usually be solved quickly with a couple of minutes of back patting or bottom bumping.
can sit up for quite a while but is still a bit wobbly. He isn't quite ready for a restaurant high chair or shopping cart just yet.
wants EVERYTHING and has much longer arms than we realize...he has flipped a bowl of fruit off the table and showered himself with fruit juice.
is still wearing size 2 diapers.
has zero teeth.
wears 6-9 month clothes and even a few 12-18 hand-me-downs (he is smaller than Owen and Mason were at this age).
jabbers a LOT and can often be heard saying his favorite word "ah-ba." He is also having fun with m sounds, b sounds, and d sounds.
really enjoys being outside, but who doesn't this time of year!
LOVES kicking his feet when he's happy (or really mad) and can often be found with little red/raw arches from so much excitement in his feet!
is proving to be a light sleeper. He seems to wake easily from naps, sometimes due to his big brothers (who try very hard to remember to be quiet), sometimes for no real reason at all.
claps! He sometimes claps on "cue" when he hears you say "yaaaaaay!"
quits crying and/or gets a huge grin if you sing Numna's enfamous "da de da de da de daaaa..."
rolls to get places or toys and pivots on his tummy.
has started sleeping with his little bottom in the air. Just adorable!
is learning about cause and effect! He loves to bang on tables, toys, people, or he will bang two objects together to see what sounds he can make.
tried out a swing at the park for the first time and loved it.
still loves smiling, watching his brothers, and jumping in his jumperoo.
won't eat baby food! We've tried rice cereal, oatmeal, carrots, sweet potatoes, and bananas. BUT...
he LOVES pickle juice.
if he's hungry and I'm holding him, he will "dive" down to assume the nursing position.
has enough hair now for it to blow in the wind and get a little bit of bed-head.

I did turn seven months on Easter afterall, so I get to chew on an Easter egg!

Six Months

There is no shortage of cuteness around our house lately! I know it sounds cliche' but Jack is SUCH a happy and chilled out kid. And along with being happy comes LOTS and LOTS of giant, open-mouth smiles! He has the sweetest little face and the prettiest eyes! His eyelashes are just like his brothers' - and it even looks like he's wearing eye liner because they are so thick. Not fair!! We have really enjoyed this first 6 months with our little guy even if our life is a little hectic because of it. I could not have imagined a better fit for our family. Here he is at 6 months old...that bear is gettin' smaller and smaller!

At six months, Jack:

weighs 15 lbs, 14 oz. (25%)
is 26 1/4" tall. (50%)
is wearing size 2 diapers and can still fit into some 3 month clothes (although certain footed ones are too short). He is also able to loosly wear some 9 month hand-me-down colder weather stuff.
is finally going in the positive direction in the hair growing department. He may have been at 5 months too, but it's possible it was just my imagination. He still doesn't have as much hair as his brothers did at this age, though.
tried rice cereal for the first time and loved it so much that he whimpered between bites!
still primarily breastfeeds and still takes between 3 and 9 ounces of formula a day.
stillllll likes to wake up and eat (or snuggle) but is having more and more nights with longer stretches of sleep - 5 or 6 hours.
says "mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm" when he wants something.
will NOT take a pacifier. Luckily he's so happy that he really doesn't need one anyway.
has really started enjoying his toys lately. He has some stacking cups that Owen and Mason really like for him to play with. They set them on his bumbo tray and he waves his arms and knocks them all off. They decided he gets points when he knocks them off, and gets even more points if he drools or spits up into one of them. Yummm...
likes to watch everybody and everything going on around him.
decided he doesn't mind being in his bumbo and enjoys this new perspective of the world, especially if you give him toys to bang together.
is a cat-napper on most days. Or maybe just a light sleeper. Or maybe we are too noisy or busy and keep interrupting him. But it seems that he isn't getting his full naps on most days. He will fall asleep and wake up less than an hour later. These short naps are like power naps to him I guess because he won't go back to sleep until the next nap time (and that one is usually a short one too)! Thankfully, rested or not, he is still a super happy kid.
sleeps on his tummy at night, takes naps in his swing (in an effort for a longer nap).
kinda, sorta tripods himself when we sit him up, but mainly he just folds in half to chew his feet.
took his first official road trip to Galveston (I suppose this means he 'saw' the ocean for the first time even though we didn't head to the beach?) and did pretty well. Not as much sleeping as his brothers used to do on road trips but he was pretty content with his toys.
has yet to develop stranger or separation anxiety. He's happy just being held.
finds Owen and Mason more amusing and funny than ever before. He's always watched them, as long as they were in his field of vision. Now he will crank his neck as far as possible to make sure he can see what they're doing.
has noticed the pets but isn't too terribly interested in them yet.
has longer arms than we realize! He has pulled a bowl of cereal off the table and has stuck his hand in cake because Mom thought he was far enough away!
pulls his bottom lip in and sort of suck/smacks on it as if he is tasting something yummy.
enjoys "patting" things. When he's nursing he will pat my arm, sometimes he'll pat your back while you're holding him, he pats his toys...it's really quite sweet. :)
gets a big grin when he hears someone sing the "Granna version" (came about when Owen and Mason were little) of Pat-a-Cake to him. "Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, roly roly rolllly. Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, roly roly rolllly. Put 'em in the pan!" We would always stand him up for "put 'em in the pan" and now I think he is trying to do it on his own because he recognizes it.
talks to us in long, one-syllable words. Usually a long "uhhhhhhh" or "aaaaaaaa" sound. And usually accompanied by patting something.
does not care to be held in a lying down position unless he's being fed. He isn't the type of baby you can "rock to sleep" because he wants to be up and looking around. Although he loves to be held and walked around with, he doesn't really put his head down on your shoulder when he's tired. For sleeping, he'd rather just be put in his crib or swing.

I just noticed in the following pictures that his hair looks red! It is actually coming in a medium brown, similar to Owen and Mason's color. So far I think this little guy shares hair color, eyes, and eyelashes with his brothers.

Something I didn't do for Owen and Mason was have a little half birthday party for them. I should have since making it through the first 6 months of twins is a feat! But this time around I decided it was not to be missed!

It just so happend that Numna was on her way to spend some time in Austin, so she came over with Granna and Granddaddy to help celebrate. It ended up being a great evening! Jack had a really hard time napping all day, and then had to get 3 shots on top of it all. We decided to put him down for a late nap (while the rest of us ate dinner) before we woke him and had the 'party.' While he was asleep, Granna and Numna played dominoes and Monopoly with Owen and Mason. I know they had a great time being the complete center of attention for a bit! They could hardly wait for me to wake Jack though! Those boys reallllly wanted a piece of his cake!

I'm SIX months!

Today started off pretty fun! My big brothers showed me a book.

School is Cool

Owen and Mason LOVE their school! We feel so blessed that it turned out to be such a great one. We were VERY late on picking since we moved in July and were still narrowing down our new Austin location into August. Lots of schools and MDO's were full and this one just happened to still have 2 openings on the days we wanted!

Their teacher is fabulous, their aide is fabulous, and they are soaking up Spanish like crazy! They love learning the language that Papi speaks and have told me they want to be a Spanish teacher (and nacho maker) when they grow up.

Each week the kids rotate who is the special helper. When it's your week you get to do various things, including being the ever-important line leader!! We decided to join them for lunch when it was their respective turns for special helper. They specifically told us that when other parents come for lunch, they "hold hands in the hallway." So Aaron and I made sure to be there in time to walk down to the lunch room holding hands with the kids. So funny what kids pick up on! Mason's choice for lunch: Wendy's.

They also went on their very first field trip! Owen and Mason were counting down for at least a month! The school happens to (sort of) share a parking lot with Carino's. So they all walked over and got to make pizza and take a tour of the kitchen area - including the walk-in freezer (that I've been reminded by my little people was only ZERO DEGREES!!!)! Ha! Really made an impact, I guess! Of course I joined them that day (at their request) while Granna babysat Jack at home.

It is just so crazy to see them in Pre-K! I used to TEACH kids this age when I was pregnant with them! And those kids seemed so...well...BIG! And independent! And capable. And not like babies! I remember thinking back then that it would be weird when Owen and Mason reached the age of the kids I taught...and how 4 years seemed SOOO far off. Why does being a parent make time speed up? I'll never know.

It Goes Both Ways!

So this has got to be the best sibling moment so far since Jack has arrived!

First, just in case you forgot (ha!), let me say that Owen and Mason LOVE to try to get Jack to smile or laugh. Smiles come easy, while laughing has proven a little more difficult for them to draw out of him. Jack loves to be tickled, but O and M don't quite have the *right* tough to make it tickle - instead I think it must feel like poking. Usually I'm right there "helping" Jack laugh and giving the credit to the boys. Makes 'em feel good. :)

Anyway, back to the other night...best sibling moment yet! Finally the relationship between the big boys and Jack is really starting to go both ways! Just watch the video!

This is one little boy who is excited to be getting bigger and better at doing things. I can tell he wants to get moving so he can keep up with his big brothers. Well, now he's one step closer!

Jack is rolling both ways now and he's very happy about it! This past week he had been getting his hips and shoulders flipped over but he couldn't quite figure out how to lift his big baby noggin off the ground and un-pin his arm. He had one successful roll but it was kind of a "cheat" since his bottom arm was down by his side before he started. Then he did it once again for Granna on Thursday.

Finally on Saturday it clicked. And now just one day later, he's doing it with ease. In fact, bedtime on Saturday was kind of tricky because of his new-found skill. His instinct was to roll over, which led to his other instinct - mini push ups for tummy time. Not super fun when you're an exhausted baby. He got pretty mad so I had to stay by the crib for a few minutes and keep him from rolling while he relaxed enough to fall asleep.

Five Months

Oh boy has Jack gotten FUN! It seems like every day he does something else cuter than the day before! It makes every day so much fun for the rest of us - and a bit hard to get anything done because we'd all rather sit and play with Jack. The big boys still can't get enough of him and often argue over who gets the seat in the car that has the view of Jack. It's a nice problem to have! :)

At five months, Jack:

14 lbs, 14 ounces (50th percentile)
25 inches exactly (25th percentile)
wears size 1 diapers and size 3-6 month clothes.
is about 2 pounds lighter than Owen and Mason were at this age.
can't get enough of his big brothers! His favorite thing to do is watch them. Watch them play, watch them in the car, watch them make goofy faces, watch them in the tub - you name it!
has discovered his feet and looks so adorable lying on the floor grabbing them.
thinks his hands are delicious!
really loves to talk. His baby language is so fun to listen to and he is quite charming when he does it!
has started doing the SWEETEST thing ever - after I finish nursing him I give him kisses on the side of his cheek/neck area. He turns his head as if to expect it, and gives me the most adorable little coo/laugh I've ever heard. This goes on for several minutes and I can't get enough!
has made the transition from falling asleep in his swing, and being transferred to his crib, to falling asleep in his crib.
is really perfecting his aim when trying to grab what he wants.
can often be found playing with his bumble bee toy or chewing on his giraffe.
has rolled twice from his back to his tummy!
is no longer swaddled at night, and instead falls asleep wearing a sleep sack - more affectionately known around here as his "slanket."
goes back and forth trying to decide if he still loves his pacifier. He discovered his thumb or thumb + pointer finger may be even better.
rarely cries so hard that he can't be calmed down. His crying is more like fussing and is typically easily figured out.
has lost quite a bit of hair compared to when he was born.
has been given baths in several different ways, but his all-time favorite is in his baby tub without the newborn hammock thing. His feet go crazy kicking and splashing water everywhere and his little face is full of excitement! And don't think about adjusting his position should he start sliding down - he will let you know with a howl that he wants to be left alone to splash!
loves to grab and krinkle the plastic wrapper that the diapers are packaged in while getting a diaper change.
takes about 9 ounces of formula a day.
has become effecient at breastfeeding, usually taking no more than 5 minutes per side. He does feed more often but Mommy prefers it this way, so it works out!
still wakes at 2 am to eat - or maybe just to fidget and trick Mommy into snuggling. Due to the fact that his room is about as far from our room as possible, and that there is no chair in there, he still sleeps in our room until we can skip this feeding.
wakes again at 6 or 7 am for another feeding.
has had more blow-outs this month than I care to count!! (usually coming in the early morning hours)
has had some major spit-up action this month too! I think he is just getting "full to the top" as Owen and Mason say.
can often be found smiling or happily looking around at the world.
gets pretty mad when put into his swing or car seat, but only for the first 30 seconds. Once buckled, he's perfectly fine with it.

Owen and Mason LOVED this thing! We pulled it out of the attic, gave it a good cleaning, and let Jack go to town. He was a little slow going at first as he tried to figure out what he was to do, but I think we put him in quite a bit earlier than we did with Owen and Mason (they were closer to 6 months - Jack is a few days shy of 4 months. Boy does the song bring back memories!

Playing Games and LOLing

Jack is a funny guy and getting quite playful! He initiated his first "game" last week. I was lying on the bed nursing Jack like I typically do. Aaron was over on his side of the bed and he had to cough. It kind of startled Jack so he turned over to see what it was. Aaron said "hi Jack! Whatcha doing?" Jack smiled and turned back to me. I thought he was going to continue nursing. Instead, he "faked" latching and then turned back to Aaron and gave a huge grin. Aaron talked a bit to him and then Jack turned back to me, fake-latched again and turned back to see Daddy. Jack played this "roll over and smile at Daddy" game about 10 times in a row. It was too funny. (Then, a few nights later at about 2 am, Jack remembered this game and tried to initiate it with a sleeping Daddy.)

Jack has been really working on laughing out loud lately. At first, he'd only give a little grunt laugh when tickled around his collar bone. (In fact, I wasn't even sure it was a laugh the first few times I heard it. I thought it was more of a sound of discomfort and pleasure mixed together). Anyway, when you were lucky enough to get the laugh, he only had a few to give. Over the next couple of weeks it became easier to solicit a laugh with a tickle - now his underarms were a tickle spot as well. But still no laughing without being tickled.
Until last week. I was sitting on the couch with him just talking to him with him really concentrating on what I was saying. Of course he was smiling and cooing, which made me smile and chuckle back. Then all of a sudden he gave me a little laugh at some stupid mommy noise I was making. I continued to talk to him with a laugh in my voice to see if he'd mimic it. Sure enough, he was laughing right along with me. It was the most adorable thing to-date!!
These days, he has more laughs to give when getting tickled - and they sound more like laughs instead of cute grunts. He even has some force behind it now which gives him a bit of a chuckle. I got a precious video today of him laughing:

The laughing when NOT being tickled is still more infrequent which makes it even more fun to hear it when he decides something is funny. He REALLY loves being raised/lowered above your head and is brought just to the very edge of laughing every time but he never quite gets it going. Just a HUGE smile and some cute little coos.
Today Aaron was making his puppy give him kisses and apparently Jack thought it was hilarious! So there it was - the elusive non-tickle laugh! It's just adorable to watch him start expressing himself more and more.

Another thing to note is that Jack has really been talking lately. He has mastered the "ahhh" sound and loves to show it off. It's funny because he either doesn't do it, or does it a bunch of times in a row when looking at someone or something.

Well, since I'm playing MAJOR blog catch-up, things are a bit out of order. It wouldn't necessarily matter, except that I use this blog as sort of an electronic baby book of sorts. So, in an effort to keep my blog mostly chronological, I will be back-dating some entries that happened several months ago. That means these new posts won't show up at the "top" of the blog and interested readers (read: grandparents) may not know they're there.
