GLASGOW-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s medal aspirations suffered a heartbreaking blow after sprinter Asimenye Simwaka was dramatically disqualified from the women’s 400m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games for breaching World Athletics Technical Rule 17.2.3.

Simwaka’s race ended in disappointment after officials ruled that she had committed a lane infringement.

Under Rule 17.2.3, athletes competing in lane races must remain within their allocated lane throughout the race and, on bends, must not step on or inside the left-hand lane line or, in the case of the inside lane, the kerb or the line marking the inside of the track.

The decision brought an abrupt and painful end to what had been a promising 400m campaign, leaving the Malawian athlete’s hopes of progressing in the event shattered.

However, the setback does not mark the end of Simwaka’s Commonwealth Games journey.

The talented sprinter now turns her attention to the women’s 200m semi-final at 21:05 this evening, where she will be determined to put the disappointment behind her and fight for a place in the final.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Queens will conclude their Commonwealth Games netball campaign on Friday when they take on hosts Scotland in the seventh-place playoff at 14:00.

The clash will determine whether Malawi finishes seventh or eighth in the final standings, as the Queens look to end their tournament with a victory.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-One of the country’s Civil rights activists Sylvester Namiwa has been arrested.

The arrest comes after Namiwa was summoned on Thursday afternoon before Malawi Police Service Headquarters at Area 30.

The activist is currently being held at Lingadzi Police in the capital Lilongwe.

Namiwa who is the leader for Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI), has said the arrest comes hours after Minister of Lands Chimwemwe Chipungu, through his lawyer Khwima Mchizi, demanded a public apology from Namiwa.

The demand relates to a presser Namiwa held this week in which he called for accountability and a voluntary lifestyle audit of the minister.

“I won’t apologise to Chipungu, let him sue”-Namiwa fires back

The organization has further disclosed that Namiwa also received a call from Norman Chisale, President Peter Mutharika’s personal bodyguard and Deputy Minister of Homeland Security, who expressed frustration over remarks Namiwa made during a recent media interview.

The activist however refused to apologise to Chipungu instead challenged to him to go to court.

The police however are yet to establish charges for Namiwa’s arrest.

More to come…..

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa has challenged Minister of Lands Chimwemwe Chipungu to take legal action against him, insisting that his organisation will neither apologise nor retract its allegations.

Namiwa said a court case would provide an opportunity for Malawians to scrutinise the minister’s wealth and financial dealings through evidence presented before the court.

The remarks follow a demand by Chipungu, through his lawyer Kwima Mchizi, giving CDEDI 48 hours to retract and apologise for what the minister describes as defamatory statements made during a press conference on July 27.

According to the demand letter, CDEDI alleged that Chipungu purchased seven vehicles worth MK2.8 billion after becoming a minister, was constructing a hotel beyond his known sources of income, and was linked to land transactions involving Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) Development Limited (ADL). Chipungu has rejected the allegations as false and defamatory.

Responding to the ultimatum, Namiwa remained defiant.

“Demanding accountability from a public officer is never, and shall never be, defamation. Therefore, we will not apologise or retract. Should he decide to go to court, that will be a golden opportunity for us and Malawians to obtain all the relevant documents,” Namiwa said.

Chipungu maintains that he only acquired two duty-free vehicles after becoming a Member of Parliament and that both purchases were financed through bank loans available to MPs. He has denied all other allegations, describing them as baseless and damaging to his reputation.

The minister has warned that if CDEDI fails to apologise and withdraw the allegations within the 48-hour deadline, he will proceed with legal action.

The dispute now appears headed for the courts, where both parties could be required to substantiate their claims with evidence.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-Malawi’s local councils have recorded financial irregularities exceeding MK2.9 billion, raising concerns over weak financial controls, poor expenditure management and accountability in the use of public resources.

Presenting the findings in Parliament on Wednesday, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairperson Steve Baba Malondera said the irregularities included unpaid statutory deductions, payments made outside the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), salary arrears, delayed utility bills and payments for incomplete projects.

Malondera said the challenges reflect wider weaknesses affecting local governance, including financial reporting, procurement processes, asset management, revenue collection and strategic planning
.
He said 22 local councils were scrutinised over various financial and administrative challenges, with recurring problems identified as affecting accountability and effective service delivery.

The PAC Chairperson further said some councils had weak systems for managing public assets, including failure to maintain updated asset registers and secure ownership documents for council properties.

“There were also concerns over project implementation, with cases involving abandoned projects, stalled developments, poor workmanship and projects that failed to deliver expected benefits despite public investment,” Malondera said.

He added that revenue collection remains a major challenge, as some councils have struggled to meet targets and recover outstanding debts, affecting their ability to provide essential services to communities.

The committee has called for stronger internal controls, improved records management, compliance with procurement procedures, recruitment of qualified personnel and accountability for officers involved in the misuse of public resources.

The UN emergency food agency appealed for immediate funding on Wednesday, warning that deepening hunger is undermining the response to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that has now infected more than 3,200 people.

“Ebola feeds on delay, fear and hunger,” said Carl Skau, acting Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP). “Stopping this outbreak requires all hands on deck and communities at the centre.”

Declared in eastern DRC on 15 May, the Ebola outbreak is the fastest growing on record. Full-blown Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus is marked by severe bleeding and a fatality rate of around 40 per cent.

What you need to know

This is the largest Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus to date, according to the latest update from the World Health Organization (WHO)

48 health zones across five provinces in eastern DRC are affected: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Tshopo and Haut-Uele

Ituri, the outbreak’s epicentre, remains one of the country’s most severe hunger hotspots, with 1.9 million people facing crisis levels of food insecurity or worse

More than 2.65 million people in the 48 Ebola-affected health zones face acute food insecurity, including more than 628,000 people in emergency conditions, according to the UN-backed global monitor Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)

‘Food is frontline Ebola containment’

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) issued a stark warning that food assistance and logistics are critical to containing the outbreak.

“Food assistance is frontline Ebola containment,” Mr. Skau said. “It helps families stay home, supports safe isolation, builds trust with communities and keeps health teams moving. We know what works. What we need now is the speed and resources to scale it before this outbreak outruns the response.”

Such efforts also help reduce movement of people in search of food, supports safe isolation, lowers the risk of harmful coping strategies and creates the social conditions for health actors to operate safely and effectively, the agency said.

What’s the UN doing?

The UN is actively helping authorities respond to the outbreak, including through its food agency, WHO and its children’s fund, UNICEF.

Here are highlights of some WFP efforts in DRC:

Since the onset of the outbreak, the agency’s UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) has operated 495 flights, transported 3,395 humanitarian responders and delivered 56 metric tonnes of essential cargo to frontline locations, including newly affected provinces such as Haut-Uele and Tshopo

WFP has delivered more than 160,000 hot meals to patients, contacts and frontline workers in 17 treatment and isolation centres

WFP has also provided dry food rations to 23,000 people in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, including 14,000 people under quarantine with monthly food assistance

An additional 36,000 people in Ebola-affected zones have been reached with general food assistance

Challenges ahead

Speed and resources are the main challenges, and every delay gives Ebola more room to spread, while gaps in logistics, food assistance and community support risk weakening containment efforts, according to WFP.

At the same time, insecurity, access constraints, community unrest and limited operational capacity in newly affected areas continue to complicate surveillance, supply movements and response scale up.

To sustain all operations in DRC for the next six months, WFP requires $293.6 million, which includes funding emergency logistics and food assistance in Ituri and other affected areas.

John Karani is Secretary General of the African Supply Chain Confederation (ASCON)

Johannesburg 29 July 2026 The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement has created the world’s largest free trade area, digital technologies are enabling strategic decision making, and Africa is the next powerhouse.

Yet none of these opportunities will be realised without supply chains capable of supporting them and that requires professional leadership that matches the scale of the opportunity. There is, without a doubt, a case to be made for the supply chain to be a strategic function rather than a back-office cost centre – a creator of value for companies and countries that can drive immense socio-economic benefits through efficiencies and revenue.

A well-run logistics centre enables better planning when it comes to route to market, as well as streamlined insourcing, especially when events that can be described as catastrophes – such as the war in the Middle East – hit.

However, Africa’s progress when it comes to professionalising this role has been constrained by fragmented standards, limited cross-border collaboration, and a professional community that has largely operated within national boundaries.

Continental value chains

The AfCFTA agreement provides us with the perfect opportunity to drive change towards a standardised and professionalised unit that can make a real difference. Its core objectives of a single liberalised market, increased intra-African trade, and enhanced competitiveness depend entirely on seamless cross-border logistics, harmonised procurement standards, and integrated regional value chains. Supply chain professionals are central to this agenda.

AfCFTA is more than a trade agreement. It is a framework for building continental value chains, allowing businesses to source inputs, manufacture products and distribute goods across multiple African markets more efficiently.

For that vision to succeed, supply chains must be designed to operate across borders rather than within them, with common standards, trusted partnerships and the professional expertise needed to manage increasingly complex regional networks.

Looking ahead

Realising AfCFTA’s potential also requires moving beyond trade facilitation to beneficiation through adding value to raw materials before they leave the continent rather than exporting commodities and importing finished goods.

Supply chain professionals with the right strategic competencies are well placed to drive this shift, developing resilient, localised sourcing networks that catalyse domestic manufacturing and support job creation.

What makes this a reality is the establishment of standardised logistical frameworks that eliminate non-tariff barriers. These bureaucratic and regulatory obstacles have long prevented the theoretical free trade area from becoming a functional reality.

The technology imperative

This opportunity comes amid a period of rapid technological change. Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, digital procurement, business intelligence and supply chain visibility tools are changing how we operate and reshaping what competent supply chain management looks like in practice.

These tools make it possible to interpret predictive analytics, advise boards on geopolitical risk, and manage supplier relationships across multiple jurisdictions, often simultaneously. This is necessary to ensure the continued smooth functioning of logistics networks that keep products moving in and out of countries – the heartbeat of any economy.

This is exactly what we seek to address, standards and further professionalisation, at the 2026 African Supply Chain Confederation (ASCON) Conference to be held from 23 to 25 September 2026 in Livingstone, Zambia. More than 400 supply chain leaders, policymakers, executives and professionals will meet to navigate the theme “Africa Rising: Converting Strength into Global Supply Chain Impact”.

Ambition into action

Through doing so, and with insight from more than 40 speakers who will address three sub-themes: Industrialisation and Transformation, Technology and Innovation, and Breaking Trade Barriers through AfCFTA and regional integration, we can devise solutions to improve our sector as well as strategise how best to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead. We believe that it is vital that as many people as possible attend so we can draw solutions from a wide range of sectors, specialisations, and stakeholders.

The conference also coincides with the tri-convergence of the African Commerce Convergence Summit, a collaborative platform bringing together supply chain, marketing and ICT, reflecting recognition that Africa’s economic transformation will require these disciplines to work in concert. It is ASCON’s first continental assembly, hosted in partnership with the Zambia Institute of Purchasing and Supply, and brings together a confederation that now spans 11 member countries across the continent.

Africa has all the ingredients needed to become a globally competitive supply chain powerhouse. Unlocking that potential will require stronger collaboration between industry, policymakers and professional bodies, turning ambition into action through partnerships that accelerate trade, strengthen regional value chains and position the continent as a key player in global commerce.

That is our strategic intention – moving beyond the narrow expertise of the back office to our rightful place as drivers of socio-economic growth, facilitators of efficiencies, and guardians of the logistics networks that ensure goods are moved efficiently from one place to another.

In several administrations after Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Presidents, to consolidate their own authority, often chose running mates who were political outsiders rather than trusted leaders from within their own parties. Often, this has resulted in internal power struggles, divided loyalty, succession battles, and unnecessary political instability.

There is three important lessons Malawi should consider:

1. Dr. Kamuzu Banda’s decision to eliminate the position altogether reflected a governance philosophy that avoided competing centres of power within the Executive.

2. Malawi should seriously reconsider whether the office of the Vice President is necessary. If the position consistently creates political conflict while imposing significant costs on taxpayers, then constitutional reform should examine whether those resources could be better utilised elsewhere.

3. If the office is retained, Presidents should choose a Vice President from within their own political party—someone with a proven record of loyalty, leadership, and public service, rather than individuals primarily motivated by personal ambition, popularity, or the pursuit of power.

A Vice President should strengthen the government, not become a rival power base.

RABAT-(MaraviPost)-Malawi women’s national football team coach Lovemore Fazili says belief and commitment were the driving force behind the Scorchers’ stunning 3-2 victory over defending champions Nigeria in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) played on Tuesday at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Speaking to MaraviPost Sports Desk after the match, Fazili said the availability of his full squad including star forward Temwa Chawinga, gave Malawi the confidence to attack one of Africa’s strongest teams.

The victory marked one of the biggest results in the history of Malawian women’s football as the Scorchers defeated the 10-time WAFCON champions in their maiden appearance at the continental finals.

Fazili, however, said the team will not be carried away by the famous win, insisting their focus remains on reaching the semifinals and securing qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“We believe in ourselves, but our mission is not over. We have to remain focused and continue working hard because we want to go as far as possible in this tournament,” said Fazili.

Temwa Chawinga produced another outstanding performance by scoring twice and was named Player of the Match.

Her sister, who is also Scochers Captain Tabitha Chawinga, also found the back of the net to complete Malawi’s scoring, while Nigeria replied through Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu.

The result has put the Scorchers in a strong position as they chase a place in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Fleetwood Haiya congratulated the players for their determination and discipline against the African giants.

Haiya urged both the players and the technical panel to remain fully focused ahead of their next assignment and avoid complacency after defeating the defending champions.

He said the victory should inspire the team to push even harder as they aim to make more history in Morocco.

Meanwhile, the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations through its official Facebook page congratulated both Malawi and Zambia for their impressive victories on Tuesday, saying the two nations had made Southern Africa proud.

Zambia also enjoyed a dominant outing after thrashing Egypt 6-0 in another WAFCON fixture In group C.

The Scorchers will now turn their attention to Egypt, whom they face on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, knowing another positive result could move them closer to a historic semifinal place and keep their World Cup qualification dream alive.

Introduction: The Problem You Face

ChatGPT changed everything when it launched. Students started using it to write essays instantly. Teachers panicked. Schools bought detection software. Now you’re probably searching for a ChatGPT detector that actually works.

Here’s the problem, though. Most ChatGPT detector tools don’t perform that well. I tested several of them. I tried detecting obvious ChatGPT output. Sometimes the detector caught it. Sometimes it completely missed it. Other times it flagged my own writing as ChatGPT.

What Is a ChatGPT Detector Anyway?

A ChatGPT detector identifies when ChatGPT wrote something. ChatGPT has a writing style. It favours certain sentence structures. It uses specific word patterns. It repeats particular phrases.

Your chatgpt detector analyzes your content and compares it against patterns from actual ChatGPT output. The logic sounds simple. In reality it gets much more complicated.

The software reads your sentences. It examines word choice and sentence length. It measures how predictable your text is. Then it makes a guess about whether ChatGPT wrote it.

Why You Might Need a ChatGPT Detector

Teachers use these tools most often. Students started using ChatGPT to write essays.

Publishers also use them. They don’t want to publish AI-generated content. A ChatGPT detector helps them screen submissions quickly.

Companies use them to verify their writers aren’t taking shortcuts. Content agencies use them to check freelancer output.

Students use them too. You might want to know if your writing will get flagged once your teacher runs a ChatGPT detector on it.

The Main ChatGPT Detector Tools Available

GPTZero stands out as the most famous option. The creator built it specifically to catch ChatGPT. Their entire goal was creating a ChatGPT detector that actually worked.

You paste text into GPTZero. It analyzes the content. Then it tells you if ChatGPT wrote it or a human did. Does the ChatGPT detector actually work? Sometimes. It catches obvious ChatGPT output. Pure ChatGPT text usually gets flagged correctly.

It misses edited ChatGPT output though. If you take ChatGPT content and rewrite it, the detector misses the AI origin.

Originality.AI tries to do more. It’s a complete solution. A ChatGPT detector plus plagiarism checking plus quality analysis in one tool.

The free version is limited. You get a few checks. Then you need to pay for more. Results are sometimes better than GPTZero. The limitations on the free version make it not useful for heavy checking though.

Turnitin dominates in schools. It’s the industry standard for plagiarism checking. Now they added ChatGPT detection to their platform.

Copyleaks offers another detection platform. It does plagiarism checking and now ChatGPT detection. The free version is stripped down. The paid version performs better.

Grammarly started as a grammar tool primarily. They added AI detection features recently. The free version has basic features. AI detection in the free version is weak and limited.

How Your ChatGPT Detector Actually Works

The ChatGPT detector analyzes text statistically. It looks at patterns in word frequency. It examines sentence length patterns. It measures how predictable your text is overall.

ChatGPT has specific patterns. It structures sentences in particular ways. It favors certain words. It repeats certain phrases consistently.

Your ChatGPT detector learns these patterns. Then when you submit text, it checks if your patterns match. The software makes an educated guess about AI involvement.

The problem becomes obvious immediately. Human writing can match ChatGPT patterns. ChatGPT can also write in ways that don’t match those patterns. The detector isn’t identifying proof. It’s guessing.

What a ChatGPT Detector Actually Catches

Obvious ChatGPT output gets caught most often. Unedited ChatGPT text has recognizable patterns. Most detectors flag it correctly.

Edited ChatGPT content confuses detectors. You take ChatGPT output and rewrite it. The ChatGPT detector struggles. Sometimes it catches it. Sometimes it misses it completely.

Simple editing defeats most detectors. Change your word order. Use different synonyms. Suddenly the detector can’t identify it.

Sophisticated ChatGPT output presents problems too.

Human writing that looks like ChatGPT causes the biggest issue. Clear, formal writing triggers detector flags. Good vocabulary and sentence structure look suspicious to the software.

Non-native English speakers get flagged more often. Their writing patterns look unfamiliar to the ChatGPT detector.

The Real Problems You Face

False positives happen constantly. A ChatGPT detector flags human writing as AI regularly. Studies show 15-25% of legitimate writing gets flagged incorrectly.

Students face terrible consequences. Teachers assume they cheated. The student gets accused. They face punishment. But they actually wrote it themselves.

False negatives happen too. A ChatGPT detector misses AI content frequently. Edited ChatGPT output gets missed. Rewrites of AI content pass as human.

Different detectors give different results. Test your text against five ChatGPT detector tools. You’ll get five completely different answers.

One detector says 80% AI. Another says 20%. A third says 100% human. How do you trust anything when they can’t agree?

What Research Actually Shows About Accuracy

Stanford tested multiple detectors. Princeton tested them too. Results were disappointing across the board.

The technology isn’t reliable enough for important decisions. Schools shouldn’t use a ChatGPT detector as their only evidence. Courts shouldn’t rely on it. Publishers shouldn’t reject content solely based on it.

What You Should Actually Do

Don’t panic if a ChatGPT detector flags you. One detector flagging something means very little. Request verification. Ask for a conversation about your work.

If you’re a writer, you can appeal. Explain that you wrote it yourself. Offer to rewrite it. Show your process and drafts.

Always pair any ChatGPT detector result together with human judgment. Never rely on the detector alone.

How to Use a ChatGPT Detector Effectively

Use it as a first signal. Not as final judgment. A ChatGPT detector might alert you to something that needs closer inspection. That’s valid. The alert isn’t proof though.

If a ChatGPT detector flags something, investigate it. Read the content carefully. Ask questions. Check the context.

Teachers should use a ChatGPT detector on student work. Then have conversations after. Ask students about their essay. But read the content yourself. Evaluate it independently.

Everyone needs to understand that a ChatGPT detector can fail. It will create false positives. It will miss real AI content.

The Real Challenge Ahead

ChatGPT keeps improving constantly. The software gets better at sounding human. The harder detection becomes over time.

A ChatGPT detector must distinguish between two increasingly similar things. Perfect human writing and perfect AI-mimicked writing become hard to separate.

As ChatGPT improves, detection becomes mathematically harder. Eventually it becomes impossible. The detector fights a losing battle.

Detection technology can never catch up to generation technology. The gap keeps growing.

Better Alternatives You Should Consider

Actually read the content yourself. Think about it carefully. Evaluate the quality. This approach is more reliable than any ChatGPT detector.

Look for other signals too. Does the work match the student’s known ability? Are there typos or errors scattered throughout? Does the voice sound authentic?

Ask students to show drafts. Show their brainstorming notes. Show their research process. Faking all of this is much harder than faking final output.

The Bottom Line

A ChatGPT detector can help you sometimes. It catches obvious AI output occasionally. It doesn’t perform perfectly though.

Most ChatGPT detector tools aren’t very accurate. They work sometimes. They fail frequently. They produce false positives that harm innocent people. They produce false negatives that let cheaters pass.

As ChatGPT improves, detection gets harder. Not easier. This trend will continue forward.

Use a ChatGPT detector as supporting information only. Never use it as your sole basis for important decisions.

The arms race between ChatGPT and detection continues. Detection is always losing. Accept that these tools have real limitations.
