According to Al Jazeera, the latest developments come as US President Donald Trump renewed his prediction that the conflict would end “very soon, one way or the other”, insisting that Tehran must either reach an agreement with Washington or face an end to the war through other means.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the two tankers caught fire after hitting mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical international shipping route through which a significant volume of global oil supplies passes.

The reported incidents have heightened concerns over maritime security and the potential disruption of international energy supplies, particularly as Gulf countries continue to condemn recent attacks on commercial vessels in the region.

Despite the escalating rhetoric, Tehran says diplomatic contacts with mediators are continuing, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressing hope that Washington will choose negotiations over further military confrontation.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran’s existing seven-step proposal for restoring security in the Strait of Hormuz had been condensed into a plan that could be implemented within two days.

Baghaei described the proposal as evidence of Iran’s willingness to pursue diplomacy, but stressed that progress depended on Washington’s response and its willingness to address Tehran’s demands.

He also maintained that the United States must lift its naval blockade and meet Iran’s conditions before any agreement can be reached to reopen and secure the strategic waterway.

Iran further disclosed that messages had been exchanged with Washington through Qatari mediation during a recent visit to Doha by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

A draft proposal has reportedly been circulated for feedback, with the possibility of another meeting remaining open following the departure of an Iranian delegation from Qatar on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Iran has rejected suggestions that it harbours hostility towards neighbouring Gulf countries, saying it supports regional cooperation and lasting security.

However, Tehran warned that it would not remain silent if neighbouring states allowed their territories or military facilities to be used in operations threatening Iranian sovereignty.

The diplomatic standoff has also attracted international attention, with Chinese President Xi Jinping warning that the Gulf region should not become a battleground for rivalry among major global powers.

Speaking during a meeting with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq in Beijing, Xi called for collective efforts to protect regional peace and stability.

The latest developments leave the Strait of Hormuz at the centre of an increasingly dangerous confrontation, with the possibility of renewed military action threatening international shipping, energy markets and wider regional stability.

In a letter dated 28 October 2026 to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump said both countries no longer meet the eligibility criteria for the preferential trade programme.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the decision was based on concerns raised by the US administration over trade and investment barriers, national security and foreign policy interests.

The US has raised concerns about tariff and non-tariff barriers, agricultural market access, regulatory requirements, investment protections and intellectual property rights.

According to the notification, South Africa was additionally flagged over concerns raised by the US about alleged corruption, while Rwanda was flagged over concerns raised by the US about alleged human rights, rule of law and political freedoms issues.

These are concerns cited by the US administration in its notification and should not be presented as independently established findings. No independent adjudication on those allegations was provided in the letters.

Washington also cited concerns over South Africa’s international relations and cooperation with countries it considers sensitive to US national security interests.

The move, if implemented, would end preferential duty-free access to the US market for thousands of products from both countries that have benefited under AGOA since 2000.

The White House said South Africa and Rwanda could regain eligibility if the concerns identified by the administration are addressed.

In his letter to Ramaphosa, Trump said Washington was willing to continue engagement with Pretoria on trade and investment issues.

South Africa is one of the largest non-oil AGOA beneficiaries, exporting vehicles, agricultural products and metals under the programme. Rwanda’s exports under AGOA are smaller but include apparel and specialty agricultural products.

Neither Pretoria nor Kigali had publicly responded by the time of publication.

AGOA, enacted in 2000, grants eligible sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to the US market for more than 1,800 products. Eligibility is reviewed annually based on criteria including market access, rule of law, human rights and alignment with US national security interests.

LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a dramatic turn of events at the Parliamentary Inquiry into the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others, a key witness has produced physical wreckage debris to back his eyewitness testimony.

Samuel Christy Lwara, an independent political campaigner for the late Vice President who was among the first civilians to reach the Chikangawa Forest crash zone, delivered a detailed account to the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee in Lilongwe on Monday.

Lwara disclosed that he took matters into his own hands after being previously denied an opportunity to testify during the initial investigation into the June 10, 2024 disaster.

The Race Against Time

Reliving the harrowing hours following the aircraft’s disappearance, Lwara explained that he had initially traveled to Mzuzu Airport to receive Dr. Chilima following the burial of former Attorney General Ralph Kasambara.

When news broke that the military aircraft had vanished from radar, Lwara immediately mobilized to join search efforts in Mzimba.

His account paints a disturbing picture of confusion, missed signals, and delayed coordination during the critical early hours of the search:

Distracted Security Detail: Lwara testified that upon approaching local law enforcement and encountering three Malawi Defence Force (MDF) trucks carrying troops, he was informed by soldiers that they were assigned to oversee national examinations rather than the emergency search and rescue mission.

Map Request Denied: In a desperate bid to navigate the dense timber reserves, he sought a forestry map from wood-processing company Raiply, but was unsuccessful.

Villager Breakthrough: It was local villagers near Kasangadzi in the Nthungwa area who ultimately directed him toward the crash site.

According to Lwara, residents had already received word from tower security guards that the aircraft had gone down nearby.

Lwara further alleged that by the time he reached the location, police and MDF personnel were already restricting civilian access to the site, raising critical questions about the timeline of when authorities actually pinpointed the wreckage.

He noted that his own search ended around 11:00 PM that night when police informed him that search operations had been officially suspended until morning.

Malawi has been a democracy for the past 32 years, and it will come as a shock to many nationals that there is no Ngwazi, no Mpulumutsi wa Muyaya living at the State House.

This is because in 1994, Malawians overwhelmingly voted for democratic governance that came complete with a democratic constitution.

This document outlines the type of government the country chose. That choice led to the Ngwazi at State House moving to Mudi House. State House has hosted presidents elected to office for 5-year terms.

The constitution drafted, debated, and taken to the people throughout the country incorporated therein three arms of government. These three arms of government are known as the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary.  The most important thing about these is that they are equal, they have different mandates, and they form what is known as the government. They are separate; they have different tasks, but they are equal. These three arms FORM the government.

With the exception of the judiciary, the executive and legislative arms of the government are elected to their offices.

Recently, members from the executive and the public voiced various adverse reactions to the Speaker of the National Assembly Sameer Suleman’s efforts to pursue parliamentary investigations into alleged governance failures and misuse of public resources. Some even voiced that the Speaker should resign from his twice-elected position: he is an elected member of parliament, and his fellow members of parliament elected him to the position of Speaker.

Speaker Suleman is doing his job, a job that is outlined in the constitution adopted at the dawn of democratic governance in Malawi. Before this dawn of democratic governance, Malawi had been ruled by Ngwazi the Mpulumutsi wa Muyaya President Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda. During this time (31 years in all), what was said by the president from State House was as good as law.

The appeal made to Malawians who cherry-pick what was prevalent during Dr Banda’s 31-year rule is: please STOP. There is no Ngwazi at the State House. The three arms of government have clear, diverse mandates (job descriptions), and acknowledgement must not only be made, but also respected. By ordinary Malawians and all members of the three arms of the government.

It is unfortunate that Information Minister Shadric Namalomba publicly questioned Parliament’s authority to investigate corruption, insisting that suspected criminal offences should be referred to law enforcement agencies. To the honorable minister, please acquaint yourself with the parliamentary rules and procedures. They have changed since the days of the Ngwazi at State House.

My good friend, retired Supreme Court of Appeal Justice Dunstain Mwaungulu, informed Malawians that through parliamentary oversight, the National Assembly can investigate suspected corruption and conduct inquiries. This is part of the numerous mandates of parliament. It has been for the past 32 years.

Justice Mwaungulu was quick to add that while the parliament investigates wrongdoing, the parliament “cannot determine criminal guilt or prosecute suspects.” He pointed out that this is the mandate of the Malawi Police Service, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), and other agencies that are mandated to investigate financial crimes.

Democracy is a wonderful system of governance. The beauty of it is that it spells out clear, non-interchangeable jobs for various players in executing their roles. Just as the executive and judiciary have their mandates, parliamentary committees scrutinize public institutions and investigate concerns involving public resources. This is an accountability and oversight instrument.

The ambitious initiative brings together three interconnected technological solutions: an initial fleet of 100 Geely EX2 electric vehicles, a nationwide network of 40 public EV charging stations, and Sky Ride, a digital mobility and fleet management platform designed to revolutionise passenger transportation.

Unlike conventional electric vehicle initiatives that focus solely on vehicle sales, Sky Energy Africa is developing an entire technology-driven mobility ecosystem that integrates vehicles, energy infrastructure, digital payments, real-time monitoring and intelligent fleet management into one interconnected platform.

The development comes at a critical moment when motorists across Malawi have endured lengthy queues at filling stations, with some spending nights waiting for fuel amid persistent supply disruptions.

From pioneering electric vehicles in 2023 to building a national mobility ecosystem

Sky Energy Africa Founder and Managing Director Schizzo Thomson said the initiative represents the next phase of the company’s long-term vision to accelerate Malawi’s transition towards sustainable energy and transportation.

In September 2023, Sky Energy Africa pioneered the introduction of electric vehicles into the Malawian market, demonstrating that electric mobility could offer a practical alternative to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Three years later, the company is moving beyond introducing electric cars to establishing the supporting infrastructure, digital technology and operational systems necessary for large-scale electric mobility adoption.

“When we introduced electric vehicles in Malawi in 2023, we were not simply introducing another type of car. We were introducing a new way of thinking about energy, transportation and the future of our economy.”

“Today, we are taking that vision further by building an integrated ecosystem where electric vehicles, charging infrastructure and digital technology operate together to provide a reliable, affordable and sustainable transportation alternative,” said Thomson.

He explained that Malawi’s recurring fuel shortages have exposed the vulnerabilities of an economy heavily dependent on imported petroleum products.

“Malawi does not produce petroleum, yet our transportation system depends almost entirely on imported fuel. Every fuel supply disruption affects businesses, households, public transport operators and the wider economy.”

“Electric mobility gives us an opportunity to rethink that dependency. Instead of relying entirely on imported petroleum, we can increasingly power our transportation using electricity generated within Malawi, including renewable energy,” he said.

A nationwide network of intelligent charging infrastructure

At the centre of the initiative is the planned deployment of approximately 40 public electric vehicle charging stations at strategic locations across Malawi.

The charging infrastructure will initially support operations in Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Zomba and Mangochi, with additional charging locations planned along the M1 corridor and at selected major service stations.

The network will incorporate modern DC fast-charging technology, intelligent charging management systems and remote monitoring capabilities.

Depending on the vehicle’s battery capacity, charging power and state of charge, compatible fast chargers can replenish a substantial portion of an EV battery in approximately 30 minutes.

The infrastructure will be supported by a centralised digital charging management platform capable of monitoring charger availability, energy consumption, charging sessions, operational status and system performance.

“One of the biggest concerns people have about electric vehicles is where they will charge, particularly when travelling between cities. We are addressing that challenge by developing charging infrastructure alongside the vehicles.”

“Our vision is to make charging an electric vehicle as convenient and predictable as possible. Through digital technology, drivers will be able to identify charging locations, check charger availability and plan their journeys more efficiently,” explained Thomson.

The company also intends to explore integrating renewable energy generation and battery energy storage systems at suitable charging locations, strengthening the relationship between Malawi’s electricity and transport sectors.

Sky Ride: Technology connecting vehicles, passengers and charging stations

Another major highlight of the launch will be the unveiling of Sky Ride, a technology-driven electric mobility application designed to connect passengers, drivers, fleet operators and businesses through a unified digital platform.

The platform is being developed to support Public electric ride-hailing, shared passenger transportation, airport transfers, hotel transportation and corporate mobility services.

Beyond conventional ride-hailing functionality, the ecosystem is designed to incorporate fleet management, vehicle tracking, battery state-of-charge monitoring, charging infrastructure visibility and operational analytics.

The technology will enable fleet operators to make informed decisions about vehicle deployment, charging schedules, energy utilisation and operational efficiency.

“Sky Ride is more than a taxi-hailing application. It is a digital platform designed around the unique requirements of electric mobility.”

“We want to create a system where vehicles, passengers, drivers and charging infrastructure are digitally connected. This will allow us to manage fleets more intelligently, reduce unnecessary downtime and improve the overall passenger experience,” said Thomson.

He added that digital integration would play an important role in improving the commercial viability of electric transport, particularly for businesses operating large vehicle fleets.

Initial fleet of 100 electric vehicles

The first phase of the project targets the introduction of 100 Geely EX2 electric vehicles to support urban and intercity mobility services.

The vehicles are intended for deployment across Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Zomba and Mangochi, creating opportunities for electric ride-hailing, corporate transportation and other passenger mobility services.

The Geely EX2 is a compact, fully electric passenger vehicle designed for efficient urban transportation, with an electric drivetrain that eliminates the need for petrol or diesel.

Unlike conventional vehicles, electric cars operate without tailpipe emissions and generally require fewer routine mechanical maintenance procedures because they have fewer moving parts in their propulsion systems.

Thomson said the economic advantages of electric vehicles extend beyond the immediate challenge of fuel availability.

“Electric vehicles are not only about responding to today’s fuel crisis. They represent an opportunity to fundamentally reduce the operating cost of transportation in Malawi.”

“When you consider fuel expenditure, engine servicing, lubricants and other maintenance requirements associated with conventional vehicles, the long-term economic case for electric mobility becomes increasingly compelling,” he said.

Thomson noted that electric mobility could particularly benefit businesses, fleet operators and institutions whose transportation costs represent a significant portion of their operating expenditure.

Reducing pressure on Malawi’s foreign exchange reserves

Beyond addressing fuel shortages, Sky Energy Africa believes electric mobility could contribute towards reducing Malawi’s long-term foreign exchange expenditure on petroleum imports.

The country relies heavily on foreign currency to procure fuel, making transportation vulnerable to international oil prices, exchange rate fluctuations and supply chain disruptions.

By progressively substituting imported petroleum with electricity generated domestically, electric mobility could help retain a greater share of transportation expenditure within the local economy.

Thomson emphasised that the transition would require investment in electricity generation, grid capacity, charging infrastructure and supportive policies.

“Every kilometre travelled using electricity instead of imported petrol represents an opportunity to reduce our dependence on foreign fuel.”

“The greater opportunity is that Malawi has the potential to generate electricity from its own energy resources. We can increasingly power our transport sector using energy produced within our borders rather than depending entirely on petroleum imported from outside the country,” he said.

He added that electric mobility should be viewed not merely as an environmental intervention but also as an economic development strategy capable of stimulating investment, innovation, technical skills development and new business opportunities.

A decade of energy innovation

The launch also marks a significant milestone for Sky Energy Africa as it celebrates 10 years of operations in Malawi’s renewable energy sector.

Established in 2016, the company has grown from a renewable energy solutions provider into a clean energy technology enterprise involved in solar photovoltaic systems, battery energy storage, energy management and electric mobility.

Thomson said the company’s journey reflects its commitment to developing practical technological solutions to Malawi’s energy challenges.

“When we started Sky Energy Africa 10 years ago, Malawi was facing serious electricity shortages. We saw an opportunity to contribute solutions through solar energy and battery storage technologies.”

“Ten years later, our country is facing another major energy challenge, this time affecting transportation through fuel shortages. Once again, we believe technology, innovation and private-sector investment can contribute towards the solution,” he said.

He stressed that the company views the initiative as the beginning of a broader transformation rather than a one-off product launch.

“We are not just launching public electric cars. We are laying the foundation for a new mobility industry in Malawi, one that connects energy, technology, transportation and economic development,” said Thomson.

Environmental advocates welcome the initiative

Environmental Advocate and Malawi 2063 Environmental Sustainability Champion Matthews Malata welcomed the development saying it will help in reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

“The launch of an e-mobility ecosystem is timely for Malawi. With persistent fuel shortages linked partly to foreign exchange constraints, electric mobility offers an opportunity to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, ease pressure on forex, and cut transport emissions.”

“It also presents an opportunity to support Malawi’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) or simply climate plans and commitments through cleaner energy and transport solutions. Importantly, we need to make electric mobility affordable and practical for ordinary Malawians,” said Malata.

He added that there is need for reliable electricity, accessible charging infrastructure, and investment in renewable energy, alongside proper battery disposal and recycling.

“The company will require the right and strategic support and partnerships and, if well executed, can potentially deliver both environmental and economic benefits,” said Malata.

Another environmental advocate Charles Mkoka has commended Sky Energy Africa for the initiative, describing electric mobility as an important step towards reducing transport-related emissions and strengthening Malawi’s transition to cleaner energy.

Mkoka, who is also Executive Director of the Coordination Union for the Rehabilitation of the Environment (Cure), said the country’s recent fuel supply challenges demonstrate the economic risks associated with overdependence on imported fossil fuels.

“What Sky Energy Africa has done should be commended because e-mobility can become cost-effective when a comparative analysis is made against the costs associated with importing fossil fuels. There has been reluctance to embrace electric mobility, but the challenges we have experienced recently demonstrate why Malawi needs to accelerate this transition,” said Mkoka.

He, however, emphasised the need for supportive government policies and incentives to encourage individuals and businesses to invest in electric vehicles.

“There is also a need for incentives for people who purchase electric vehicles, alongside assurances that they can travel long distances and have access to reliable charging facilities. This initiative is therefore very commendable,” he added.

Beyond addressing immediate fuel supply challenges, the expansion of electric mobility presents an opportunity for Malawi to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve urban air quality and strengthen its energy security.

However, the environmental benefits of electric vehicles will be greater if the electricity used to charge them increasingly comes from renewable sources such as solar, hydro and other clean energy technologies. This makes investment in charging infrastructure and renewable energy development important components of a sustainable e-mobility transition, according to Mkoka.

For Malawi, the transition also provides an opportunity to advance its climate commitments and development ambitions. The country has contributed relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions but remains highly vulnerable to climate change impacts, including floods, droughts and other extreme weather events.

Malawi has set ambitions to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of its national climate commitments. Integrating electric mobility into the country’s wider clean energy transition could help reduce dependence on imported petroleum products while supporting a more resilient and sustainable economy.

“The opportunity, therefore, lies not simply in replacing petrol and diesel vehicles with electric alternatives, but in building an integrated transport and energy system that promotes renewable energy, supports investment, creates employment and delivers environmental and economic benefits.”.

“Sky Energy Africa’s initiative could mark an important step in that direction, provided the proposed infrastructure is reliable, accessible and supported by an enabling policy environment,” said Mkoka.

Positioning Malawi for the future of transportation

The launch will bring together government representatives, development partners, corporate leaders, energy stakeholders, technology experts and members of the public to witness the unveiling of the electric mobility ecosystem.

Participants will have an opportunity to view the electric vehicles, learn about the proposed charging network and explore the capabilities of the Sky Ride digital mobility platform.

While the initiative will be implemented progressively, Sky Energy Africa believes the integration of vehicles, charging infrastructure and digital technology provides an important foundation for the commercial adoption of electric transportation in Malawi.

For Thomson, the ambition extends beyond overcoming the current fuel crisis.

“Fuel shortages may have accelerated the conversation about electric mobility, but our vision is much bigger than the crisis itself. Chaponda’s position echoes Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey’s call for the organisation to move beyond declarations and deliver tangible results through investment, economic partnerships, youth empowerment and climate resilience.

The Malawi minister reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a stronger and more responsive Commonwealth that promotes shared prosperity and gives vulnerable and developing nations a meaningful voice in global affairs.

His engagements come as Antigua and Barbuda hosts the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which officially opened on November 1 and runs until November 4 in St John’s.

The summit is being attended by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, alongside leaders and representatives of the 56 Commonwealth member states.

Held under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the summit provides an important platform for member states to strengthen cooperation, deepen economic partnerships and advance collective solutions to shared global challenges.

 Putin speaks: “I am sorry…” – Words that condemn the United States and awaken Africa. 

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his regret over the killing of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. It wasn’t diplomatic speech, but frank and humane words that send shivers down the spine.

He said: “I am sorry that I couldn’t do anything to prevent the killing of Colonel Gaddafi; I didn’t have the authority to make decisions as Prime Minister at that time.” He uttered this phrase with the weight of a man who witnessed the crime and couldn’t stop it. 

Then he added what is unbearable: “Muammar Gaddafi’s entire family was almost killed, and his body was displayed on all television channels around the world. It was impossible to watch that without feeling disgusted.” Disgust… a word that falls short of describing the scene; for the body of a man was dragged through the streets as if it were “war booty,” his sons and grandsons were killed, and then they called it all “the liberation of Libya.” 

But why all this hatred? Because the United States—which was directly involved according to Putin—could not accept the existence of an African state that dared to stand tall; a state with no foreign debt, holding reserves worth $150 billion, and providing free electricity, healthcare, and education. It was a disturbing model for them. So, they fueled the chaos, funded the rebellion, bombed cities, leaving Libya drowning in fire and blood.

And today, Putin promises, saying: “I will not allow that to happen again if I can help it. And as President, it is my duty to foster peace.” These words don’t belong to Libya alone but encompass all of Africa; Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and all those still suffering under the weight of forced interventions by imperialist powers.

Thank you, President Putin, for this courage. Thank you for voicing what millions of Africans harbor in their hearts. Long live the “Alliance of Sahel States” (AES)! And long live sovereign and upright Africa!

The long-serving priest passed away at his residence at Belvedere Presbytery in Harare, in a moment of poignant symbolism for the faithful – on All Souls’ Day, the day the Church remembers all the faithful departed.

His death was announced by Fr. Ephraim Murwira, Secretary to the Archbishop of Harare.

Born on September 30, 1930 – before the Second World War and decades before Zimbabwe’s independence – Monsignor Mhishi dedicated almost his entire life to the altar, serving through colonial rule, liberation struggle, independence and the many trials of modern Zimbabwe.

For generations of Catholics in Harare and beyond, he was more than a priest.

He was a confessor, teacher, historian, and a gentle but firm moral voice who baptized children, married couples, buried the dead, and remained a constant presence when governments and seasons changed.

At 96, he was among the last of a generation of indigenous priests who helped shape the Zimbabwean Catholic Church into what it is today – rooted in local culture yet universal in faith.

The Archdiocese of Harare said it entrusts his soul to the loving mercy of God and prayed for comfort for his family, his brother priests, and the thousands of parishioners who knew and loved him.

Monsignor Mhishi’s funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.

The comments from Nigel Green come as Wall Street strategists increasingly argue the correction underway since June is entering its final phase, with a recovery likely once the election and other near-term pressures have cleared.

He says: “Whoever wins on Tuesday, we expect the S&P 500 to get a meaningful boost once the votes are counted.

“Political uncertainty has been one of the heaviest weights on US equities this autumn, and a result, any result, lifts a big part of it.

“Our view is that the correction has already done most of its work. Beneath a fairly calm index, plenty of individual stocks have had a brutal few months.

“When the fog clears, money that’s been parked on the sidelines is likely to flow back in, and we believe it’ll spread well beyond the handful of tech giants that carried markets earlier in the year.”

The S&P 500 closed last week at 7,580, less than 3% below its October record. History offers encouragement: the index has gained around 17% on average in the 12 months following a midterm vote.

Republicans currently hold both the House and the Senate. Forecasters favour Democrats to win the House, while the Senate remains finely balanced.

The deVere CEO continues: “The polls point to Democrats taking the House, with the Senate too close to call. A split Congress has traditionally suited markets well, because it slows sweeping new legislation and gives companies a steadier runway to plan.

“If Republicans hold on to both chambers, investors will price in continuity on tax and deregulation, which is supportive in its own right.

“Either way, we think the direction of travel for equities is likely higher.”

Near-term turbulence remains possible. Close races can take days to call, and markets may stay jittery in the meantime.

Nigel Green says: “Midterms tend to be choppy going in and much kinder coming out.

“Some volatility in the days after the vote wouldn’t surprise us at all, and we’d see it as part of the clearing process.”

Liquidity is the other big pressure point. Longer-dated Treasury yields have climbed more than 100 basis points since February, energy costs are elevated, and the Federal Reserve under Chair Kevin Warsh is firmly focused on getting inflation back to 2%, though it has raised rates only once since he took office.

“Borrowing costs have jumped this year, and that’s been a drag, so we’re monitoring that closely.

“But the US economy is running hot in nominal terms and is absorbing huge amounts of capital. If markets wobble hard after the vote, we believe the Fed is likely to soften its tone, and that would add real fuel to a rebound,” explains the deVere chief executive and founder.

AI, with concerns over financing costs, capital availability, and local resistance to data centres is also expected to intensify over the coming weeks before easing.

He adds: “The worries around AI spending are genuine, and they may get louder before they fade.

“Yet the sheer scale of investment going into AI shows where corporate America sees its future. Once the current wave of debt issuance is digested, we think the sector’s foundations look solid.”

The impact will reach far beyond Wall Street and American shores.

US companies make up roughly two-thirds of global equity benchmarks, meaning Wall Street’s direction shapes pension funds, savings and investment portfolios worldwide.

“A firmer US market typically lifts confidence and risk appetite across Europe, Asia and emerging economies,” notes Nigel Green.

“It also makes it easier for companies everywhere to raise capital, hire and invest. A broader American recovery, led by more than a few mega-caps, would be healthier for the global economy than anything we saw in the narrow rally earlier this year.”

He concludes: “Election nights are noisy. The six months that follow are usually far more telling, and we believe this cycle could deliver one of the more rewarding stretches for long-term investors in recent years.”
