The word changed to gourmet in French and was applied to grooms and any minor servants in a household. Among these servants were boys who tasted wine, and such wine tasters, or gourmets, were given the same name when they worked as assistants in wine shops. Eventually the wine-shop gourmets became connoisseurs of fine wine and good food in general, giving us the gourmet we know today. The word is not recorded in English until 1820. Let's face it, we definately have the fine wine and good food!

Cellarmaster of the monastery near Epernay, France, Dom Perignon eventually found that corks tightly drawn in his bottles would not be forced out, as would rags, and would retain naturally expanding gases, allowing thee so-called second fermentation in the bottle that is essential for any true sparkling champagne.

It was probably the Greeks who brought the word candy into the language. It seems that a favorite of the troops of Alexander the Great was a Persian delicacy called kand - a sweet reed garnished with honey, spices and coloring. The word candy itself either came to us from this kand that Alexander's men brought home to Greece, or from the old Arab word for sugar, quand.

Here at The Market Basket, we might not have 2,000 varieties, but we do have plenty to choose from!

One of our new blogsters is Kathy. She was very gracious and did the thumbs up on learning of the menu specials. She also let me know that there were a few (o.k., more than a few) grammatical errors. I want to thank her first and foremost. I personally hate the idea of spending all this time on this site, and not have things spelled correctly. Makes for bad P.R. and all!

Anyway, thanks to Kathy, I have fixed those errors (I hope), and continue to look forward to more comments and good vibes regarding this blog!

In ancient times it was thought to have great healing properties. Boccaccio's "Decameron" tells the story of Isabella, who put her murdered lover's head in a pot, planted basil on top, and watered it with her tears. (personally, I think that is a bit extreme..) Let us just conclude that it is one of the finest herbs on the planet!

Tradition has it that a Yankee farmer or fisherman, whose wife Anna was too lazy to cook for him, concocted the recipe. On tasting the result of his efforts a neighbor asked him what he called the bread. The crusty Yankee replied, " Anna, damn her!". Another version claims that the husband was a Yankee sea captain who endearingly referrred to his wife as "Anna, damn'er." Anna's bread was much loved by his crew because it was delicious and would not spoil on long voyages. The captain is said to have written the following epitaph for his wife: "Anna was a lovely bride, but Anna, damn'er up and died." So hence, our Market Basket specialty bread - Anadama
