I think sometimes we all need a little reminder that it's okay to not be perfect. I often get dragged down by who other people think I should be and what they think is right and what isn't. I think it's important to sometimes set your own values of what you think is okay and what isn't. So if like me you've been having a hard time lately at the expectations of others, hopefully this will give you some assurance.

It's okay to...

It's okay to ignore words like 'should' and 'must'. Somebody else's 'shoulds' and 'musts' are just that - theirs! Don't adopt them if they aren't right for you.

It's okay to lie in sometimes. Not everyone is built to be wide awake and singing at 7am. If you don't have to be up until 10am then don't feel like you 'should' be up just because other people are.

Equally it's okay to stay up after 10pm if you aren't tired. You don't have to go to bed then just because that's when society says you 'should'

It's okay to say you're busy when you're not if you don't want to go somewhere. Sometimes a white lie is kinder than the truth. However, if it's a good friend you could just tell them it's not for you or you're not up to it.

Equally it's okay to turn down social invitations in favour of some 'me time'. Somtimes we all need to charge our batteries, do the laundry, clear out the cupboard... Don't be afraid to take time out for yourself and your home.

It's okay to dislike the latest trend. Just because all your friends love that new indie band doesn't mean you 'should'.

It's okay to go against your parent's wishes. Now this is a toughie, especially if you're particularly close with your family, someone in the family is ill, you have a strong 'resepect your elders' at all times imprint, or if that's where your shelter is or where money is involved. However, you do not have to be a lawyer/doctor/footballer/actress just because you parents said so. It may feel like they own you but you are your own person and life is too short to live someone else's dream. Live your own dream.

This brings me nicely onto it's okay to not have a dream. Not everyone grows up knowing what they want to do. Some of us have been through university and still don't know. Some people are married with children and a mortgage and four pets before they realise their dream. Some people may never discover theirs. The best thing is to just try and work out what you like and what you're good at and go from there. However, not everyone can have an amazing career where the sky is the limit. Maybe your role in life won't be a high flying executive role in the big smoke, but instead you are an amazing housekeeper, mother, priest, writer or artist. We are brought up in modern times with the imprint of success, money, career, university, office jobs etc... Despite what your teachers or your parents or your boss will tell you, having a good job or career is not the most important thing in life. Being a good friend, finding something that you're passionate about, finding someone to love who will love you back... These are the things that make a good life.

It's okay to hate exercise. Some of us do. When people boast about their latest performance at the gym just remind them you're £40 richer a month and have found the time to do all your laundry, cleaning and food shopping. If they keep calling you a lazy whatnot because you haven't got a six pack, cut them out your life and tell them it's because you can't be friends with someone who is constantly covered in oil and wearing lycra.

Organising A Party - The Basics

When organising a big bash it can be difficult to get everyone together and make it happen. Here are a few tips:

1) Don't leave it until the last minute to invite people, especially if it's on a weekend. Many people might not be able to make it due to other plans, responsibilities, travel problems or appointments. To make sure you get a full crowd, give as much notice as possible. This is especially relevant if you are sending invites in the post as you need to allow plenty of time for your invite to be sent and for your RSVP to return. If you don't know all the details yet then you can always just ask your guests to save the date until you are further ahead with plans. That way, they know to keep that day free and you have a few definites for the guest list.

2) Make use of technology. Spread the word on your social networking sites by creating event pages and sending threads out. This allows you to invite who you want without announcing that you have a free house on Friday to the whole world. Send emails and texts, instant message people or even just a simple old fashioned phone call can alert people that your party is the place to be. As well as the time, date and venue you should also let guests know where they can park, the numbers of local taxi ranks, where the nearest bus stop or train/tube station is and the best route to walk to your party. It is also worth stating whether or not guests need to bring anything and if they can bring plus ones or not so you don't end up with gatecrashers or plus threes on the day.

3) Chase people up. If your invitees don't reply within your set time frame then give them a follow up phone call or text to find out why the hell not! If you don't do this you may end up wondering who is actually coming on the day and end up over buying or under providing food and drinks. Or even worse, have no guests at all!

3) If you're very busy and doubt your ability to get everything done then get friends and family to help out. You could ask your nan to bake the cake, your next door neighbour to help put up the banners, your siblings to blow up the ballons and your parents to make some punch. Ask your best friends to help with the set up and clean up and bribe a few of your toughest looking mates to be bouncers for the first hour. It may also be a good idea to get your other half to check up on guests. Often people don't reply to the last minute, get lost and need directions, fall ill, get stuck in traffic or simply forget to check where the event is or what time it starts at.

4) If you are low on funds then one way to drop the party bill is to once again reign in some support. If it's a house party ask guests to bring their own booze(BYOB). If not, making a few bowls of punch will work out cheaper than lots of fizzy pop bottles and check supermarkets for deals on wine and beer. If you're planning a buffet you could ask guests to each bring a dish which will be much cheaper than hiring a caterer or trying to do it all yourself. However, this does require some planning to make sure you don't end up with seven trays of sausage rolls and only one pizza! As mentioned before, delegate the cake to a friend or relative and perhaps ask to borrow someone else's banners for the day to save you buying them. For music you could hire a karaoke machine instead of an expensive DJ. Or if you have a pal with excellent music taste and a good iPod then all you need is to find some cheap lights and speakers and call that The DJ Station. You could try digging out the fairy lights from your christmas tree or using the lava lamps and stream lights from a mate's bedroom. Other things worth finding for the day are extra chairs (could be garden chairs), some takeaway menus incase the buffet doesn't work out, somewhere to use as a cloakroom, a place to put any received gifts and candles and a radio incase there is a power cut! Most importantly, don't forget cleaning stuff in case of spillages and buckets in case somebody has one too many.

5) You could always spice your party up with some fun games like parce the parcel, musical statues, truth or dare, spin the bottle, ring of fire, seven minutes in heaven, twister, group pictionary, charades or a pub style quiz. For prizes, visit a 99p store and head for the chocolate aisle! Once again, don't be shy about asking for other people's help. Generally people like to eat, dance, chat and drink so if your party has these elements you'll be fine!

A little rant about the undiscovered/ uninvented/ unexplained/ unfixed/ uncured and not yet eradicated problems of the world

Why are there so many things that haven't been invented yet? Although we can go to the moon, we cannot cure the common cold. It seems ridiculous that with new inventions popping up everywhere, we still haven’t cured/fixed/discovered/eradicated/explained the following:

1) The common cold - although I suppose we'd have no reason to watch daytime tele without it

2) Stupidity - why has no one fixed Gillian McKeith yet? She clearly needs to be mended in some way...

3) Many illnesses including HIV/Aids and some forms of cancer

4) Periods - surely there is a way to have babies without the monthly torment for so many years?

5) Childbirth - do us women really need to repopulate the world in so much agony? Surely men can have babies now?

6) Wasps - if we can't find out what their use is can we not just axe them already?

7) New energy sources - yesterday the news reporter said that many nuclear power plants will be shutting in about five years time and we need a new source of energy... Humans ey, we leave everything to the last bloody minute...

8) Vampires - they've got to be real, they just have to be... Oh Edward...

9) Same goes for werewolfs, mermaids, dragons, witches, warlocks, fairies, pixies, trolls, elves, slayers, goblins, fairy godmothers... One of those stories has to be true! Surely?

10) Simon Cowell's waistline - seriously, where is it?!

11) Whether or not Lady GaGa really did used to be a man

12) If Perez Hilton has a soul

13) How to wake up looking perfect - it would just save so much time in the morning

14) Why univeristy fees are increasing by not one grand, not two grand but SIX grand???!

15) Why people panic buy in snowy weather - empty bread aisles, people buying EIGHT pints of milk?!

16) Why it never actually snows on Christmas day

17) David Dickinson

18) Why nobody you know ever wins the lottery

19) Why the government can't just print new money

20) Why money doesn't grow on trees

21) Why the papers aren't full of stories about The Apprentice's Margaret and Nick's secret love affair

Things We Can Learn From TV - Misfits

This is an old post from my previous blog Miss Emma, Please Teach Me.... It was written in December 2010.

Last Night I watched the Misfits christmas special and in doing so I learnt the following:

1) Babies do not care if you meet a guy you like. If a pregnant women meets a cute guy she must be aware that she might suddenly wee herself if the baby pushes on her bladder.

2) Never give up on what makes you unique. Whether that be selling a superpower, quitting a great class or hobby, changing your edgy style or ignoring your skills and talents. You never know when you might need or benefit from that special part of you.

3) It's extremely difficult to live up to your future self. Sometimes you can become so obsessed with who you're meant to be, who you're striving to be and where you want to end up that you forget to enjoy what's great about you and your life now.

4) Anyone can call themselves Jesus and do a few magic tricks. It doesn't mean they're a good person or a messiah so don't be fooled into donating the entire contents of your purse, even if they do have a very realistic robe and beard!

5) Money doesn't always mean happiness. Don't sell your soul.

TV Shows NEVER To Watch With Parents

Earlier on I wrote about overtly sexual films to avoid watching with your mum and dad. Now it's time for the non family friendly TV list:

1) The Inbetweeners - pretty much everything that comes out of Jay's mouth

2) Skins - the whole cast are very sexual beings

3) Misfits - mainly the character of Nathan here

4) Live At The Apollo - comedians can be so dirty

5) The Graham Norton Show - those stories on the red chair can be filfthy

6) Desperate Housewives - ladies of lust that lot

7) Loose Women - unsurprisingly those ladies aren't very tight lipped

8) Sexarama - the 'sex' part of the title says it all

9) Sex And The City - same goes here, particularly when Samantha is on screen

10) Sugar Rush - hardcore lesbian sex scenes

11) Lip Service - same, plus any scene Frankie is in

12) The L Word/The Real L Word- same, plus any scenes Shane/Whitney are in

13) How Not To Live You Life - it's about a guy who gets things wrong and gets himself into embarassing situations, like wearing bondage at his girlfriend's family home

14) Buffy The Vampire Slayer - a few crude references here and there and the odd sex scene

15) Embarassing Bodies - some ailments here can be genitalia related

16) The Sex Education Show - the title says it all

17) True Blood - this is like porn meets horror

18) Secret Diary Of A Call Girl - it's about an escort, enough said

19) The sex channels on your TV - goes without saying really

20) Wildlife shows - those animals are always at it

It's also best to avoid watching things with your family after the 9pm watershed and especially avoid anything with Jimmy Carr in it when ma and pa are about.

These are just a few off the top of my head. Feel free to send me suggestions of more, along with any embarassing stories they have brought in the past. Finally, in the modern day film industry a 12 rating is more like what a 15 rating used to be and a 15 rating isn't that far off an 18 rating. Also, it's kind of obvious but I would also avoid anything with 'sex' in the title. For example: 'Sex In The City'. So when watching films with your parents remember to choose wisely.

Why The Royal's Are Important

1) Prince Harry is still available to marry! If we take away the Prince bit he is just Harry and that won't look as good on your Facebook status.

2) Will and Kate are probably going to have an epic fairytale wedding which will be fabulous to watch and means we all get a bank holiday!

3) If it weren't for the royals we wouldn't have The Royal Variety Performance which would mean no Britain's Got Talent : (

4) If we didn't have royals we wouldn't have The Royal Navy which would mean no more sailors : ( As a graduate from Portsmouth University I can tell you girls, this would be a travesty.

5) Whose face would we put on stamps, coins, notes, souvenirs? Please don't say Simon Cowell...

6) The Queen's Speech. Your nan loves it, your mum has an excuse to sit down for ten minutes and your brother gets to do impressions of Her Majesty that make great afternoon entertainment.

7) Grandeur, class, manners, gold, silver, architecture, antiques, The Crown, Equisite Jewellery, Carriages... Royalty makes the world a slightly more beautiful and elegant place.

8) History, legacy, heritage, national identity...

9) Some little girls dream of being doctors, nurses, teachers, soldiers, pilots, athletes one day. Some little girls also dream of being a princess one day. Without royalty, there wouldn't be any princesses. Don't crush the pretty pink fairytale!

10) TOURISM.

11) The Prince's Trust, The Duke Of Edinburgh... There are so many charities and organisations run by or in the name of royalty that might struggle to continue without them.

12) The National Anthem. What would our footballers forget the words to without it?

13) The soldiers outside Buckingham Palace. It's just soooooooooo fun trying to make them laugh.

I know many people don't understand why we need them, and I agree perhaps they could free up a few assets and support the nation in hard times but I want royalty to remain. Britain wouldn't be the same without them.

Hey Folks!

I am changing my blogs around a bit so hang in there while it all changes!

The reason for this is that I am launching a small craft business and I am creating a new business blog called Emma's Kollection. This will be a craft blog for handcrafted cards, bookmarks, gift tags and hampers. Check it out if you love crafts or if you are terrible at remembering birthdays as I will be launching a new service that just might interest those with an elephant's memory!

A Film Student's Space will stay exactly the same as this is a shared blog but Miss Emma, Please Teach Me... is going to be deleted after it's contented has been integrated into The Mash Up Mix, making this blog a video and article blog.

This may look odd at first but I am hoping to do more articles as well as video posts so hopefully it will all work out in the end. Apologies to those who liked the blogs the way they were but I think three blogs may be too many to manage and I think adding some articles of value to The Mash Up Mix can only improve this blog more.
