"You can't sell books on Twitter," say the naysayers.

But I say, "Hog wash!"

Perhaps you won't sell very many books (if any) solely because of a tweet, but that doesn't mean Twitter shouldn't be part of your front line defense. Be it directing attention to a blog (which I can directly attest to) or sending prospective customers to Amazon, Twitter is a rich source of traffic.

Twitter has done its job once people land on your blog or your book's Amazon page.

Whether you get a sale after that has little to do with Twitter, which is why "Buy My Book" tweets do not work. Not saying you'll never sell a book that way, but the chances are rare ... that's why I don't use that technique.

My Twitter Technique

Instead, I direct attention to reviews, the synopsis, and lines directly from the novel (especially if there aren't any reviews). I use hashtags to reel people in who do not follow any of our accounts. I also use pictures to draw attention to the tweet within the feed. (For a small extra fee, of course)

And we get a lot of retweets, especially from the accounts that have larger followings, such as my main account (@MasqCrew) which has more than 50,000 followers just by itself. Once you add in our other accounts, we have well over 100,000 followers.

A Book Tweeting Service

The tweets I compose will come from the book's Amazon page. In fact, all you have to give me is a link to your book when you pay through PayPal. It couldn't be easier.

There is no minimum number of tweets that will go out. I will continue tweeting for the foreseeable future. Tweets that are going out right now, in fact, include book promos that were paid for more than a year ago.

For the $5 package, I will spend about 15 minutes composing tweets. In that time, depending on how well your Amazon page cooperates (synopsis, reviews, etc...), I will be able to compose anywhere from 10 to 20 different tweets.

For the $15 package, I will spend extra time to create a picture for each tweet. The number of tweets will be about the same for either package.

I use appropriate hashtags to send out multiple versions of these tweets across ten Twitter accounts, mixing them in with other books being advertised.

This service is not meant for time specific campaigns, so don't expect me to promote a giveaway or a sale on Amazon. These are long-term tweets. Same goes for box sets: if it is only going to be sold for a few months, you'll have to email me once it's no longer for sale. I will not check. I don't have the time.

All tweets will have a pic since Twitter automatically pulls a pic from a link if possible. Custom pics will stand out, though.

Cheaper Elsewhere? Doubtful!

I doubt you could find any other tweet service this cheap. We're talking less than a penny per tweet.

Where are my tweets?

I will not message you to let you know your tweets are going out. You will simply have to check my main Twitter account to see for yourself. (@MasqCrew) Authors have complained that their tweets aren't going out, but I easily find one of their tweets by simply scrolling through Twitter, usually in less than a minute.

Don't complain before you look. That just wastes my time.

And there are lots of other books being advertised. That's one reason why I offer long term exposure. If you don't see a tweet from today, maybe there was one yesterday .. or there will be one tomorrow. It's all random. I don't choose the order of tweets.

I'm at a loss. I'm not sure what to do.

As is apparent from browsing this site for just a few seconds, I haven't done anything with it since October. The Masquerade Crew hasn't been completely silent. I've been promoting books (and the occasional other link) on Twitter.

I've been busy working at my convenience store job, and we are homeschooling our kids this year. There hasn't been a lot of time to work on the website. That hasn't necessarily changed, but every once in a while I get the urge to try again.

One thing I know for sure is that I don't want this site to be about book ads. And it was turning into that, so when personal things started getting in the way, I took a step back to refocus.

I turned off all tweets that pointed to this site. I focused on Amazon tweets. And these tweets run as intended. I could get authors to sign up for the tweet service if and when I get this site going again. Might even make a few dollars along the way (which is kind of necessary if I'm going to put any real amount of time into the venture).

But I want the site to be more than just that. I could put a post up advertising the tweet service, and that would be the extent of what this site is for. The small handful of authors who would sign up for the service each month would come to the site when they saw an appropriate promotional tweet advertising our tweet service.

But part of me wants more than that.

I could bring back cover wars and the scavenger hunt (with or without a giveaway), but I got burned out doing those ... or I simply didn't have time. I wouldn't mind trying again.

Since I am an Amazon affiliate, I could list similar products on Amazon (like a top ten list). Might make a few dollars from it. It would generate some traffic. Perhaps even a different kind of traffic, not just those looking for books. And once people are here, they might click on other things we do.

So, my question is, what should I do with this space?

What should become of the Masquerade Crew?

Part of me has always been against niche. I have so many likes and/or hobbies. Part of me says incorporate anything and everything into this space. For example: music, homeschool, or even random stuff we find online (putting internet searches to good use). It would become less about books, though I would always help indie authors, and many authors have been instrumental in keeping my interest in this site.

What do you think?

If this site turned into a buffet of topics (nearly anything appropriate goes), would you as an author consider advertising (as opposed to if it were centered strictly on books and writing)? If you wouldn't advertise in either case, do you at least see the value in presenting books next to topics that have nothing to do with the writing industry?

I agree with the philosopher Gottfried Leibniz that God would have created the best possible world. Looking around us, the universe does work pretty well. I would say it would be the ultimate arrogance to suggest anyone could do better. Sure, I agree, there are things we are not happy about, but I genuinely believe there is a very good reason for everything that happens in this universe. I would never dream of questioning what has happened, and what is happening in the world. I believe everything is in its right place, and everything is perfect just as it is.

God-Consciousness had the purpose of creating a universe that allowed Him to experience Himself. He, therefore, had to create the universe within Himself. As there was nowhere He was not, it would have been impossible for Him to do otherwise (assuming I can use the word impossible with regard to God!).

God’s Plan was the ultimate game. One could view it as a game where God-Consciousness split Himself into lots of tiny pieces, and chose to forget who or where He was, with the object of putting the jigsaw puzzle pieces back together again and then removing the blindfold and regaining His memory so He once more knew He was God-Consciousness. I realize that this sentence is complete nonsense as it sits here, but I suspect it does point to something like the Truth. These words may be written in a light and playful way, but there is real Truth behind them.

My Vampire World

I have been fascinated by vampires for a long time. At times, cast in the role of the hero and others, the villain. Vampires are an enigma, a demonstration in contrasts.

My vampire world is consistently full of contrasts. It is filled with darkness, symbolizing death – cheating death through their undead existence, evading death by keeping to the shadows, evoking death of their human victims. We see the darkness. Then, through their eyes, the world is a brilliant and vibrant place. Everything appears sharper, clearer. Their senses, and instincts, are efficiently honed. They have evolved into superior creatures, intent on fulfilling their basic needs, ruthlessly, with a single-minded goal of survival.

My hero Corgan’s pre-vampire life was also focused on survival. His maker Dee rescued him from desolate conditions and bestowed upon him immortality. He saw how strong and vital Dee was, nothing could touch her, not pain, not fear, not death. He wished to gain what she had, but an undead “life” is what she gave him, a life he couldn’t have possibly imagined or desired. He can live undead forever, but he still longs for his human form.

There is a place, within his world, where he can escape, like a dream, where his consciousness goes when he’s resting. His bite is the key to this world and my heroine Marisa joins him there, experiencing what he experiences, an enactment of his human fantasy.

Vampires live alone or with families, nests. Aside from the seemingly chaotic activities of violence and murder, they also have order. Laws. Rituals. Culture. A history which has developed parallel to human existence for thousands of years. A people cannot survive, advance, without some sort of structure. Vampires can offer their protection to humans by claiming them in a ceremony similar to human marriage. Vampire law dictates adherence to this claim, a vampire cannot harm other’s human. But, as in any society, there are those who defiantly choose to live outside the law. And those who choose to rise above their circumstances.

Other supernaturals also exist in this world. Humans with magical abilities like wizards or shifters. Creatures beyond earthly barriers like angels and demons. These different sects are aware of each other, can identify each other, and, for the most part, avoid each other. Some actively seek and destroy supernaturals, like vampire hunters. Most wish to conceal their presence from humans. Some form alliances, like the one between Corgan and his wizard friend Waldor.

Rhianwyn daughter of Carradan screamed as she raised the axe and sprinted towards the Gorvic, whose eyes widened as she charged him. The thrill of battle was pulsing through her like blazing fire and she grinned fiercely as she saw how that fire was absent in her enemy.

The boy was pale beneath his woad and he shrank away as her axe swung for his head. The resulting miss caused Rhia to stumble and a bolder fighter might have taken advantage of it, but the Gorvic simply backed away further, apparently forgetting the iron sword held in his hand.

The Caderyn warrior regained her balance and swung back at the sheepish man, who raised his sword in a clumsy block which barely kept the axe-blade from his neck. Rhia thrust her long knife at his stomach. It was shorter than the Gorvic’s sword but that was still holding off her axe from his face, and she came within a hairsbreadth of gutting him before he twisted away.

The two broke apart and Rhia watched the man eagerly, her eyes as wide with excitement as his were wide with fear. He was licking his lips nervously, his grip on the sword clearly tenuous, and the daughter of Carradan licked her own lips with glee as she sprang forwards at her enemy. She swung the axe in three quick blows at his head, forcing him to cower behind his sword. Rhia kept on striking, screaming out in what was either rage or passion, though she had no idea which one, and each time it seemed the axe came a fraction closer to splitting his skull.

Now that I'm working from home a lot more, it's time to bring back promo posts. I'm going to try something different this time around. Instead of paying for each post, authors will pay me to work so many hours for them. Authors will get a lot more out of me this way. IOW, the price per post will be a lot less than it would be if I charged per post. (Sorry if that was confusing.)

Since there will be so many posts, this package effectively takes over the blog for probably about a week, which is also about how long it will take me to rack up 10 hours worth of work.

I will work about 5 hours on an author's behalf.
You get just about everything you get in the 10 hour package. I simply won't work as long. It might mean fewer tweets, fewer pictures for tweets, not as much time on Facebook (statuses), etc...
But an author can still turn in multiple promos.

$30 — 2 Hour Package

I will work about 2 hours on an author's behalf.
Once again, you get as much as I can offer in the time paid for. Perhaps not as many posts as above or as many tweets.

What is my time worth?

It will be worth more to an author if the information turned in is complete and unique. And more of it the better. If an author only has one book published on Amazon, and that book doesn't have any reviews, there's only so much I can present ... without being overly redundant.

So, if an author only has one book published, perhaps the 2 hour package makes more sense. There can still be multiple interviews, top ten lists, and the like.

However, if an author has several books published, the 5 hour or 10 hour packages might be more appropriate.

Will a giveaway be included?

The short answer is no. The longer answer includes an extra benefit for the author. My services are geared toward long-term exposure. So, although there will be a time when this blog is posting stuff for just one author (think of it as an onsite blog tour), the promotion of such material will continue long after the initial hype is over.

Another part of the answer is that I've done giveaways before, and they don't produce the results I liked, not in a timely fashion that is. There are so many books out there, and many authors are giving away their books to garner attention. I would spend too much of the time paid for just trying to get people to take a copy.

A lot of giveaways include a monetary reward. These garner more attention, but I am not convinced this is a good way to get people to check out an author's books. People are more interested in the money and not the people behind it. It's kind of like free books on Amazon. People download them and then leave bad reviews because they are idiots and didn't know what they were getting.

However there is something we can do to offer a book for free, and in the long run I think it is worth a lot more than a giveaway. We can have a post that offers a book to anyone who is willing to review it afterwards. Here is an example of such a post. Instead of a list of books, a paid for post will only have the book or books of the author paying. That kind of post can be long-term just like any of the others. Even if just a few people contact an author with such a post, it would be far more worth it than a stupid giveaway.

Does that mean my service is not worth the price?

Not at all. To get an author's name out there, to get books seen, takes time. And my promotions are not about sales or other short-term gimmicks.

Plus I've figured out how to give an author a ton of posts for mere dollars per post. I don't want to give an exact number of posts (cause I don't really know), but in 10 hours I could easily do a dozen posts. Maybe more. A lot of that depends on how much work the author does.

Like I mentioned above, much of my time will be spent composing tweets and otherwise promoting the material an author presents. More material the better.

What do you mean by long-term exposure?

Let me put it this way: tweets are still going out that promote posts from 2014 - 2016. Multiple authors have told me to stop promoting old posts for one reason or another (usually because a book is being republished).

I've only recently stopped promoting stuff from 2011 - 2013. But I still have those tweets if I wanted to dust them off and bring them back out.

In other words, I have no problem promoting older posts as long as the info is still good.

Use our services, and an author's name and their books will be promoted to the Twitterverse for the foreseeable future.

We have in the past, but I don't have time right now.

If someone would like to organize a review crew...

I am more than willing to expand the crew again.

In general, how does someone get book reviews?

Well, I'm not an expert, but I can offer some tips.

Offer your book for free in exchange for a review.

This may sound obvious, but probably needs said anyway.

Let people know that your book is available.

Let people know via blog, social media, email list, etc...

If you don't have a very big network,

getting book reviews may not be as important.

In other words, connect with more people before asking for reviews.

Synopsis

There should be a law, a Universal Rule, as to how much weirdness can happen to a person. Fifteen-year-old Sara walks into the San Francisco Center for the Circus Arts determined to ignore the freaky things happening to her. As powers she doesn't want and can't control overwhelm her, Sara must decide if she can trust the strangers who say they are her family ... descended from a common ancestor four thousand years ago. Sara clings to her contented and well-planned life as a foster kid, successfully working the system, as dreams, powers, and magical creatures drag her towards her destiny. When the ancient evil that killed her parents comes to San Francisco, Sara is forced to choose between her fears and her desire to protect those she loves. Sometimes great things are thrust upon us. Sara wishes this supposed 'greatness' didn't include a new name, unicorns, and catching on fire.
