How was it created?

"XO-Alien" was created using fluid acrylics and gel mediums on watercolor paper. First, a brilliant blue-green background was laid in using various brushes. Interesting shapes were later stamped all over the surface to develop the composition. Then glazes were applied to add texture and depth. Finally, fluid black acrylic modified by Clear Tar Gel was dripped over the entire painting to bring it all together.

This painting was so fun to create, it practically painted itself!

Playing around with the Photo Booth application while in the studio yesterday. The slideshow image quality is not as high as I would like but it will do. I think Photo Booth shoots better video. Just finished putting 4 coats of love on these little babies! Soon they will be off to Iraq to a new collector.

These three 5 x 5" paintings are the last of the "Vincent City" series that I recently completed. Aren't they lovely?

Why did I varnish them?

Well, varnishing is a tricky and toxic process but it gives the maximum protection for the painting to ensure my collectors will enjoy their purchase for years to come. So I don the gas mask and get to spraying.

What's the Story Behind This Painting?

Back in 2011, I was selected to participate in an event called Painting the Region-Color the coast in Northeast Florida. The above painting, "The Marsh" is a scene executed outside the Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, Fl. I painted it the same day and in the same location, I painted, "Sunset".

I finally got the painting just as I had enough of the bugs and as the sun went down. I didn't want to see what comes out at night in that little marsh so I hauled tail! LOL!

What's the Story Behind This Painting? Back in 2011, I was selected (juried) to participate in a plein air event called Painting the Region-Color the Coast in Northeast Florida. The above painting, "Sunset" is of a scene executed outside the Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, FL. I had been painting all day in another area near a old fishing shack. As I drove out of the area, I came across this scene and had to paint it. The sun was going down and I was just struck by the beauty of the scene. I parked my car along the side of the road and set up as fast as I could before loosing the light...and of course before the mosquitoes started to eat me alive. LOL!

I greatly appreciate the encouragement and support Tracy Midulla Reller and Kurt Piazza gave me in showing the drawings. The work was created during a very stressful time in my life and these drawing kept me sane. I am working on more. They are a form of therapy for me.

Fencing on Display at Watercolor Convention

Recently the Florida Watercolor Society had its 42nd Annual Exhibition at Art Center Sarasota in Sarasota, FL. Since I was a previous winner in the 2012 FWS Online Show, I was asked to provide my prize winning painting, "The Parry" for temporary display during the convention.

My little beauty took Third (3rd) place in the 2012 Online show.

I hope to enter more watercolor and watermedia contests in the coming year. I have been greatly encouraged by feedback from other watercolorists that I respect to continue.

Thoughts from the Studio..Balancing Act

Haven't been here in the studio working in a while. Family life has disrupted my studio rhythm. However, I am still pushing and learning.

I'm beginning to appreciate the small things more like slow cooking and fresh vegetables. Playing catch with my kids. Reading with my daughter. All things that are important and before my family situation changed I kind of rushed those things somewhat.

Now, I have less alone time in the studio but I am still growing as an artist, still fighting. Still balancing marketing with production. And I still have those days when I don't want to get out of bed until two big brown eyes ....her father's eyes, stare at me and say,

"Mom, are you going to come out of your room now."

"Mom are you going to go to the studio today?"

How's that for reality? I wrote a while back about creating art and being selfish but now I think NOT being selfish can give you the kick in the pants you need to get things done....to keep things moving. Sometime less is more. I waste less time in the studio because the limited time I have there alone in more precious. And when I am not alone, I have Mimi Me Serenity in there painting along side me. Not a bad deal really. :)

Putting On The Finish.....Once And For All

It is always good to sell. When one of my museum clients contacted me recently to purchase four small science paintings based on the periodic table, I was over the moon. Then I started scrutinizing each painting looking for some imperfection. Before I send my work to a collector I want to make sure it is in the best possible condition.

So I touched up any scratches and any passages of color, design, or paint film application that had bothered me over the years. Then, I coated each painting with two coats of a Golden Artist Colors product called GAC 500. I love, love, love this stuff. It serves as a very strong top coat and gives a hard finish. Really, after the second coat the paintings looked really spectacular. No kidding!

It amazes me that when I first created the pieces back in 2007, I thought they were complete and I went on to exhibit them all over the country in various shows. But as I have matured as an artist, my standards of presentation have also matured. That is why, I went to such lengths to prepare these paintings for their new home.

After I fixed any scratches and general wear and tear due to exhibiting the paintings over the years, I took to painting the sides of the gallery wrapped. Painting the sides gives a more polished look. In regards to gallery wrapped canvas, I think it especially looks nice when I am able to extend the design of the painting over to the sides and not just paint them black or gray. What do you think?

Signing "properly"

When I first exhibited these paintings, I had signed them in pencil on the front. At the time ( five years ago), I was having trouble coming up with a "signature" in paint that I liked. There was even a question of whether I should sign the small abstract paintings at all on the front. In some of the more academic circles, that is a no-no. But I felt the signature was important and if I could do it right and non-obtrusively, it would be overall enhance the painting. So , I erred on the side of caution and signed in pencil.
Followed with a coat of medium to protect the signature from being erased. It worked with the overall design of the paintings but it always bugged me a little over the years. So now using a no. 5/0 Simply Simmons synthetic brush with an excellent little point, I was able to get the signature "P.Rashid" just right.

Signing the back

I also added a signature and pertinent information on the back of the canvases written in permanent marker. Why? The information include the title and medium of the work as well as my name. I think adding the signature on the front and/or back adds a final endorsement and legitimacy to the the work. It let's the world know that the work is "Aproved by the Artist".

Stay tuned for a future post about what can wrong when an artist doesn't do this.

Reframing

Unfortunately, time had not been kind to my frames. Moving cross country a few times and sending the paintings to various exhibits took it's toll on the floater frames. I had to have several of the paintings re-framed by a local framer.

Packing them up

I used cardboard backing for protection and wrapped them all in brown paper. I believe this process protects during the packing process at the UPS as well requires the painting to be unwrapped by the recipient. This makes for a special feeling and anticipation on the part of the client.

I am all about helping my clients feel special because they are!

"Prism"-Acrylic on Canvas

"Prism" was created exclusively using Fluid Acrylics and Tar Gel Medium by Golden Artist Colors. I used a staining style which yields a pretty smooth paint finish. For me, with this type of application, leaving areas of the canvas visible (white) is just as important as the paint to get the desired effect. It is very similar to how a watercolorist would use the watercolor paper to maintain a type of "freshness" in the work.
