I drew a clock... because I had some time on my hands! Really, though, I always thought beautiful clocks were pretty cool.. at least as an excuse to hang something decorative disguised as something practical.

It's all pencil in a sketchbook that's about the size of half a piece of copy paper. The is just a quick digital picture. Maybe someday I'll stop just TALKING about scanning my stuff properly, and actually DO it. :D

Good Witch Revamp -- Vindiri's Charms

As some of you may know, I've already posted about ten or so pages of a comic called Good Witch. This comic, which once updated every Friday, has been on hiatus for a long, long time. I simply couldn't keep up with the updates at the time, and wanted to work on other things instead. So I let it go, and began focusing on MOROCHEY.

Now, as I get used to updating comics regularly, I've been thinking of starting it up again. Unfortunately, looking back, I can see that the art was ROUGH with a capital R. Looking back at my even older, unreleased stuff in my file, I also noticed that some major story-points were sorely lacking in that version. I thought to myself, "I can totally do better".

So... I intend to do better.

Below are some rough concepts of the style I want to use. The GIF format that I wanted to use supported the animation I would have liked to use, but sadly mangled my tones and shapes. I can't blame GIFs for that dude's hair and hands in the second pic, though. That was all me. <.< I'm still not sure whether I'm even going to stick to this style at all.

Stuff I Have! (But Weirdly, Never Posted...)

While tinkering around in my soon-to-be gallery, I've noticed I have a good few things I've never posted in my blog. Some were contest entries to other sites, others were just plain uncompleted.

What it is:
A design for a tunic shirt that I actually did end up making.

Why it was never posted:
I'd planned to take a picture of the shirt, but the shirt was put up before I could do anything with it. I also lost all the pattern stuff for it.

Layers in Digital Art-- Making them Behave Themselves

Layers are a HUGE asset to digital art. If you use them wisely, they can make your life a whole lot easier. Let them get out of hand.. and you have a huge, confusing mess.

For those of you who don't know already, Layers are like separate virtual pages, arranged one on top of the other. Most photo editing and art programs support this feature. Though the actual interface to mess with these layers may vary among programs, the basic concept is is the same. Whatever you draw, erase, or edit on one layer doesn't effect what happens to the other layers.

The part where it can get confusing is deciding WHAT to use these layers on. You could, of course, use separate layers for everything. That, however, is a huge mess. I did it in my picture for the Aphrodite post-- the goddess alone took up 24 layers, and the file was so huge that my comp actually crashed in the middle of saving the original version. (Luckily, the flattened PNG version saved just fine)

To give you an idea of what it looked like, I converted what was left of the original Aphrodite picture to a GIF. The GIF format doesn't support varying opacity levels, so the once-translucent colors are flat and blocky. I saved a PNG of the combined result of what the GIF is putting together, for comparison.

One thing that helps organize the layers, for me, is to assign each layer a purpose. In my webcomic MOROCHEY, I've kept it simple. It goes background, color, line-art, bubble backing, lettering, as I mentioned in a previous post. I also use the layers to make it easier to color inside the lines, by drawing the line-art first, then placing a layer behind the line-art to color on with the paint and airbrush tools. When I want to get more complicated than that, such as a page where a set of panels bleeds behind the others, I just repeat the pattern.

This keeps the layers clean and organized, while still letting them do their jobs. And guess what.. it saved! I'm sure I've only scratched the surface of what layers can do, so fellow digital artists, experiment with your own systems and see where it takes you!

Time for some more Traditional Art! I entered this drawing in the Fiery Red contest at aSingularCreation.com. It was sketched in pencil, colored with colored pencils, and inked with a totally legitimately obtained ball-point pen with some company logo on it. Oh yeah, and I scanned it to the comp, and cropped with GIMP. I ended up liking the concept so much, I may use it in a story someday.

At one point I had this thought about some day performing music live some day, and only ever wearing evening gowns on stage. These are four of the dresses I designed, each with a song in mind. I thought them up to visualize whether dresses alone would have enough range to cover all the styles of music I had in mind. The first dress was designed for a bluesy-type song with a chill melody and hard-hitting lyrics. The second dress was for more of a mystical and Celtic-inspired song. The third is a play on a harlequin pattern, designed for something with somewhat satirical lyrics. The last dress was drawn for a slow, orchestra-accompanied cover of "Tainted Love".

Hey, Who turned out the lights? O.O -- Plus + concept for Just Super

Well, due to another technology snafu, I'm afraid I won't be able to post anymore digital art for a while now. My backlight is bugging, which makes everything on-screen insanely hard to see. I can't get a clear enough picture to draw anything, including my comics. However, the show goes on! Until my comp is up and running again, I'll be tossing up sketches and filler-art, both old and new.

The first item-- something I recently came up with This is concept art for a game I plan to make in the near future called "Just Super". I've been learning python for months now, so I've been trying to think of something I can test my skills on. Something, that is, that's stronger than a game of hang,an or tic tac toe. Since I'll probably only be able to do a simple two-dimensional game, I wanted to try an RPG. One of the classic kind with the silly text-box on the bottom and side-scrolling/overhead graphics. But, of course, I needed a story.

I came up with this one from a dream I had about a super-hero story. The cruddy drawing of Max Voltage all the way on the left is what I drew the next morning. Later on, I added the rest. The beginning of the game will start with you playing as Max Voltage- hotshot young superhero who's fighting the evil supervillian Magnatude and his teenage daughter/henchwoman Terra Forma. In the end of that arc, Mangatude gets sent to prison, and Terra ends up being sent to a reform school for young supervillians. Then, it goes forward in time, and switches viewpoints to Terra.The insane headmistress of the school is supposedly a success story from the last generation, but she's using the young villains for her own devious ends.

Of course, I'm fuzzy on what the details will be, so I'm going to flesh that out later. The name of the game will be "Just Super", and should be ready by the end of this year or early in the next, if all goes well. If I can get it finished, I'll try to find a way to make it available for download. Until then, I'll keep you posted on progress made!

A Moment of Silence

I saw this message on my mom's blog, and wanted to share it for myself to show support. All I can say is God bless you all who have suffered as a result of this tragedy. To the first responders-- thank you, and stay strong. To the families of the victims-- remember that your loved ones are in a better place, and find comfort in that you will see them again someday. Until then, they'll always be in your heart, and wanting you to find happiness again. I pray you will.

Guitar Rescue! A Story of Duct Tape and Chicken Wire

Duct tape and chicken wire. It means doing what you can with what you got... even if it's not "Perfect" or "Up to code" or "Entirely safe for human use". After all, what is such minutae for in the grand scheme of things? Yes.. duct tape and chicken wire is becoming my new motto.

And for good reason! Gather 'round children, and let me tell you a tale.

Once upon a time, I had a guitar. It was a cute little First Act guitar that I got for Christmas when I was ten. I named it Melody. Hey. Shut up. A lot of musicians name their guitars.

Yeah, it's child-sized, the frets are worn down to the raw wood, and the strings have had to be replaced a couple times.. but hey, it was mine. Oh yeah, it also had a crack in the bottom about as long as my hand. But it would hold! As long as it didn't get knocked around too much....

I also had other guitars. Bigger ones that got played more, and that I didn't have to be careful of the crack with. So, after a while, Melody was put in storage to make some room.

One day, at storage, I spied part of the bottom of my guitar peeking through the bottom of a bag. GRAB! I snagged it from the bag, and resolved to take it home. Unfortunately, the crack as long as my hand had since become a huge gap that ran from the left-hand side of the sound-hole to the bottom of the guitar.

It was about to be doomed to the trash heap. "Naaah, I can fix it," I protested, "All I need is some wood glue and some clamps!" And so it was safe, for now, and taken home. Yet, all the while, I think everybody knew that I did NOT have wood glue and clamps kicking around in my backpack at home....

I didn't care, personally. I would fix that guitar if I had to Frankenstein it together with whatever I could find, until it had had more body parts replaced than the Tin Man on The Wizard of Oz.

When I got home, I immediately started rummaging through craft drawers and hidey holes for "I don't know, some kind of really, really strong glue", and eventually was able to borrow a hot glue gun. I dug through my purse, and pulled out my pocket knife. (Lots of girls keep survival knives in their purses. Don't judge.) I also scrounged up a broken emery board from inamongst the nail-making-purdy-things. I had everything I needed.

I turned the guitar upside-down, and squirted the hot glue into the smallest part of the cracks, working inward. I had to work fast- the glue would dry quickly. Between my hands, I squeeeeeeeeeezed the face on the guitar toward the body to close the gap until the glue dried. Hot glue oozed out the side as the two pieces fuzed together. I had made an inch or two of progress. Check bond. Catch breath. Repeat. When it got to the bottom, where the gap was almost a half an inch wide, I had to throw almost my whole weight on it to squeeze it together. Eventually, the entire gap was sealed, with a huge, ugly bulge of glue bubbling out the seam.

I grabbed my pocket knife, and took out the filing tool. Goodness knows how long I sat there filing down the glue until it was beaded up into a grey, half-gooey roughness plastered all over the seam. I put away the file, and pulled out the knife, and proceeded to scraaaape the remaining glue off the edge, taking a good layer of varnish with me in places. Finally, I smoothed the whole thing over with the emery board, and sealed it with clear nail polish.

To the right, you can see the result of my work. Sure it looks sealed up, even if it looked a little banged up. ....but how does it sound?

That... is a story for another time. Stay tuned for part two of the duct tape and chicken wire saga-- my "Recording studio". The tale of a sweet preamp hooked up to a 5+ year old computer, an mp3-player portable speaker, and a Sing-Star microphone. Yes. Like the videogame.

Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

I've been on a break for a while (silly real life gobbling up my internet), but now that I'm back, I figure it's about time to ease back into updating regularly again.

I'm bringing back my main comic, MOROCHEY, first, and in preparation for its return, I redesigned the site a little. I only changed a few things. The banner was changed from the hard-to-read, comic-style pic to a plainer, but easier-to-read title banner. Then I moved the page links, and re-organized the sidebar.

The newest addition to the site, though, is the InkOutbreak followers box.

I actually joined InkOutbreak so that I could follow a webcomic I've been reading called The Black Orb. It's a story about a runaway princess (Sasha) who goes on a quest with her mapmaker cousin (Ollie) to learn more about an old magical item she found in a cave. If you get a chance, check it out.

What was I saying again? Oh yeah, InkOutbreak. Well, while I was there, I found my way to the creators section and put MOROCHEY on the list. These are the banners I used to go along with my comic on the list.

I did the smallest banner first. I knew I wouldn't be able to fit much, image-wise, into the tiny frame. I came up with a tagline, and semi-intentional alliteration, to put in alongside the title.

I decided to stick with the tagline, because I liked it, and only added a few more images for the wide banner. I personally think it adds a little mystery, too, to have images behind translucent screens. The practical side of my brain was also quick to remind me that it makes more perceived space for art.

The big banner was the grand hurrah. I never dreamed of an ad-space that huge, but I figured if I had all that space I'd better make good use of it. Make it count, you know? So I did something I hardly ever see in other comic ads-- I pulled images directly from the comic dialogue and all, and set them up theatrical-trailer-style on the screens. As with the other ads, I kept with the new banner and the tagline. I'm happy with how it turned out.

As of this posting, MOROCHEY returns next Saturday-- not tomorrow, but the Saturday after that. In the meantime, I'll be sweeping up, and hopefully posting more in the workshop. See you later!

MOROCHEY -- Monthly Recap (September)

Welcome to the MOROCHEY September recap! This month, the plot thickens, as the gang carries out "The Plan". However, it seems that others have their own plans for the rare and magical Morochey Crystal that has fallen into our heroes' hands. September also introduces the separation of the comics so far into chapters (YAAYY!! :D ), and the comic's first ever late update (BOOOO D:). Please, read on for more catch up and commentary!

Money talks! ...but it seems Skye already knows what to say back to it. The anticipation of our black-suited friends' visit was an easy one for our heroes; leaving the crystals just out of Sky Watch's reach for now. The plan seems to be going as expected for Pyro... but wait.... why is Eva MIA?

This comic was ALMOST the very first late update, because I kept re-working it in my brain before drawing it. There was a lot to fit in here, and I wanted to explain in no uncertain terms where Jake's father stood on the whole issue..... without taking at least three separate updates to get it all out in the open. I think Mr. White gets the award for longest monologue in the comic so far! Though the art was, admittedly, a little ruched in the end (and I quite shamefully placed the speech-bubbles strategically to cover up slightly deformed proportions in a couple places), but in the end, I was able to upload it LITERALLY ten minutes before the deadline. Wewt! Go punctuality!

This one, I couldn't bear to rush... so it's the one that ended up late. I pirated the first panel from a deleted scene that originally featured Eva walking to the shop from... wherever THAT is. I fiddled with it a bit to make it, instead, show Pyro walking home from the shop. Each of the "npc" characters in the background was pulled from the original sketch. The conciseness of the next two panels is a good thing... because it allowed me to painstakingly recreate the following block of panels, which remains virtually unchanged from the original scene done in pencil. This while comic was fully "inked", and partially colored, literally seconds at a time. I'm not saying literally for emphasis, I MEAN literally... a few lines of drawing, computer crashes, I restart, open GIMP, draw more, save after dang near every line, repeat.... luckily the coloring was able to be finished on the less crashy computer. Was it worth the headache? Totally. I think so.

Ninja Rin not like Eva. Eva not like Ninja Rin. For all her paranoia before the snatch, Eva seems more annoyed and pissed than scared. The "master" seems to be someone she knows... but how? ...and why couldn't he just CALL her for goodness sake, instead of sending the ninja'nappers after her? ...and what exactly does he want out of all this?

We finish off the week with a bombshell! Okay, maybe it's not such a big surprise that he, too, has an agenda involving the crystals. Popular little buggars they are, eh? Yet, Sky Watch gets another mention... the paranoia-inducing, get-in-trouble-if-you-lie-to, "pushy and corrupt government thugs", are using the brawls on TV to get more control? More control of what? It seems the gang no longer has to simply choose a path.. but also choose a side!

With all the curve-balls thrown at our poor pals, what becomes of the plan? Will they cut a deal with Sky Watch? Will they enter the tournaments? Will they join with the wind ninja? Good Witch Monthy Recap (September)

Welcome to the Good Witch Monthly Recap..... which actually contains a strip from the end of August because I notoriously fail at remembering the date. Incidentally, September is the month of Good Witch's first MISSED update. Um... those two aren't related at all... :/

So.. this block of story is the first time ever (even counting early concept sketches) that the Darklands have been featured! And it looks like they may be staying there for a while.. or will they? Let's have a gander.......

The witches' powers in action! Opening a portal is pretty amazing, but not everyone could make it through. Was is a rookie mistake, or quick thinking to get them out? A bit of both? We may never know.

Welcome to The Darklands. We've seen that green stuff before- that's right, residual energy from magic. The King Agustus III (in green), Count Reginald (in purple), and the king's unnamed Apprentice (the one who was left behind). While the King and Count have a moment of silence, Aiden has a moment of... confusion. Who would have guessed they were human?

Now that the confusion has passed, Aiden remembers.... she's PISSED. Now, just for the record, it was totally a coincidence that the once again, a main female character goes absolutely crazy on page seven. Though.. I may make it a tradition. Maybe.

If this was My Side of the Mountain, I would name this chapterette "In Which Aiden and Count Reginald Clash, and King Agustus III Brings the Mothers Into This" In case you haven't seen the character's section of the About Page, I'll note that King Agustus III (shown here) is the grandson of the original King Agustus who married Queen Vindiri. Their sons were King Agustus II (Agustus III's father) and his younger brother Count Reginald (shown here). So, yadda yadda, the current king is Reginald's nephew, and Vindiri is his mother. Um.. oh yeah, story. Count Reginald has so far proven himself to be rather harsh in his judgement... but also rather correct. After all, she WOULD destroy them if given the chance...

Will Count Reginald sway the king to his side of the issue, or will Aiden take up permanent residence in The Darklands? Find out next month as Good Witch rolls on over into October. Now, I'm not making any promises right now, but IF I can get a decent stockpile before my next update, I'm thinking of doing double updates for Good Witch in October. The comic would still update every Friday, but would instead feature two pages per update instead of one. If it happens, it won't be permanent-- just a special nod to the month that features the spookiest holiday of the year. You'll know I decided to go through with it if you see two pages next Friday on GoodWitchComic.blogspot.com.

Another monthly update!

Since MOROCHEY has been going longer than a month, and this is the first recap, I'm gonna' go ahead and do a three'fer. So let's catch up on June, July, and August.

June

MOROCHEY-- #1
A lot has changed in ten years. The Crystal Arts are a gift, a burden, and..... a reality show? The young and bored heirs to the proud tradition, Eva and Pyro Caster, have grown up into disenchanted adults. Perhaps they should have paid attention? Or are there other reasons, too, why the Morochey thing didn't quite work out for them?

July

MOROCHEY -- #2
Pyro and Eva down on their luck. And so the battle between "It's not so bad" and "Eh.. yeah, it IS that bad." begins.

MOROCHEY -- #3
Enter: our somewhat dramatic friend Skye Bridevale. The group touches bases, and establishes that, yes, they HAVE been doing more than vegging on the couch. Oh yeah, and that they've got a little more to take care of, still, than in the last page.

MOROCHEY -- #4
And so we learn about The Wars, and get another teaser of what the elemental forms of the Morochey look like. We also catch a glimpse of how the twins met Skye, and a reminder of where Morochey stand today. But in present day, there are still plans that need to be made.... until another game-changer flies through the window.

MOROCHEY -- #5
A Morochey Crystal. A big damn deal.We get to learn a little bit about the origin and the importance of the crystals. We also glimpse a spy's-eye-view of it all...

August

MOROCHEY -- #6
....And the plot thickens. We not only catch a glimpse of our spy, but we get a hint at some of the other players in the game. This is also the first time we see a Morochey shift forms. Let's hope our heroes' plan is better than the last one we saw!

MOROCHEY -- #7
Eva should get some sleep. Maybe you decided to read the text, maybe you didn't. It's one of those not-sure-if-helpful-or-just-crazy things. Don't ask me which, because I'm not telling!

MOROCHEY -- #8
What's this we see? Hmm, maybe Eva had a right to be so paranoid... But enough of that, for now. Skye is late for work. Hello, Sandy. Goodbye, Sandy. Hello... Skywatch? Welcome, mister men in black.

MOROCHEY -- #9
Oh hey, Another peek of an elemental! Also, a chat window. Sneaky sneaky, Sandy. But after a few simple questions, we find..... temptation? It seems like a pretty sweet deal. Uh-oh. Was THIS part of the plan?

Good Witch -- Monthly Recap (August)

Monthly recaps. You might say "Why?" I say "Why not?"

Ah hell, I'll still tell you why. What else am I doing? :P

With webcomics updating every week, I think it'll make it easier to catch up if I recap every month. It'll also be a good opportunity to get the same kind of behind-the-scenes-ness as anything I post here in the Workshop. Monthly updates will be on the last update-day of the month.

Today's Monthly Recap is for Good Witch, whcih updates on Fridays. I'll keep it mostly short and sweet on this one, since these comics were already posted a while back here in the workshop.

August

Page One- Our main character Aiden is introduced with her Grandmother, as well as the first... glimpse? ...at what a magic item looks like. So far? Little more than just a glowy golden watercolor stain on the panel. Whatever it is, Grannie hates it. Can you blame her?

Page Two- Later that night, Grandmother gives Aiden a talking-to. How do you kill a witch? How does Aiden know how to kill a witch? So many questions, but no answers just yet. For now, it's time for bed.

Chapter Three- Someone isn't sleeping. And who's in her room? The witches make their first appearance. So what does one say to uninvited magical folk upon discovering their sudden appearance in your house? Naturally, AHHHGH!!!

Page Four- Still looking for the charm? Aiden was the last one to have it, wasn't she? Not quite, but it's too late to sort out the details now. The one thing that can kill a witch is now proceeding to barbecue the bedroom.

Fiber Arts!

First thing is first! I'm jumping into another link party- this one is hosted by My Merry Messy Life. Though I have already linked back to the party via the post I tossed into it, I used a bit of an old post. I figured I'd link again on a fresh post, and give it a good bump. The party is called Hookin' on Hump Day #11 - Link Party for Fiber Arts. I posted a crochet project, but you can also put in anything sewing, knitting, crocheting, clothing, cloth, thread...... fiber-ish! You get it. If you've got something you're interested in sharing, just follow the link to check out the rules. ^_^

Speaking of fibering, there's another project I'm working on. Another jacket-- Weird, eh? I can go all year thinking to myself "Eh, I've got stuff to keep me warm, I don't need another jacket." Still, as soon as we start getting to be on the wrong side of summer, I get the bug. The "Oooooh, I bet THIS would make a wicked cool jacket...." bug. So I buy some yarn, and start on something new.
