For the latter they received a Norwegian Grammy.

The music by Benea Reach is not easily labeled, but I am going to give it a try anyway. Benea Reach plays mathcore with progressive and modern elements, without losing any heaviness. The music is technical, is full of unusual rhythm patterns, chaotic riffs, melodies, holds many layers, is built on downtuned guitars and houses a large dose of originality. That sounds like a continuation of the previous albums and to some extent this is certainly the case, yet ‘Possession’ comes out quite different from the previous albums. Where ‘Alleviat’ sounds mainly heavy and tardy, ‘Possession’ has a lighter, more accessible approach. Furthermore, they play a lot more with the dynamics and the album has more pace and mood changes, which makes it a lot more varied and colorful. In addition, there is more use of synthesizers and occasionally a cello and violin is to be heard (‘Fallen’). The vocals of Ilkka Viitasalo (ex-Selfmindead) are intense and very contrasting: he uses deep grunts and puts outs just as easily hysterical screams (‘Empire’) and clean vocals. It may not appeal to everyone, but the deep emotion and intensity enrich the overall sound. In addition, the band makes regular usage of female vocals (e.g. ‘Desolate’, ‘Aura’), which form an attractive contrast to the rawer sound that comes from Ilkka.

‘Possessions’ may not be an album one can listen to with ease, but when you invest some time in it, all of its beauty and enriching details reveal themself and show the new album Benea Reach to be a real gem!

The song is also available as a free download in exchange for signing up for their mailing list.

The band’s latest effort The Bridge Between EP was released on January 8th via Red Cord Records. The Bridge Between consists of 4 unplugged/acoustically arranged [3 of them from thegodmachine and one of them being brand new] songs,

and 3 full band tracks that did not make the final cut of thegodmachine [1 of them has never been heard before] due to the album being 50 minutes long as it is. The song Enkindler can be streamed here & for Panhammer click here.

Above the ashes of a dry and thirsty scene, where towers of pride rise and fall, stands Phinehas [FEHN-ee-uhs]. Formed in 2001 on the outskirts of Los Angeles, Phinehas is a band of Christians with the purpose of being a shining light amidst a dark scene.] They recognize that a message is only perceived as good as the messenger, so music quality holds an equally important role in their ministry. What initially began as a thrashy hardcore band has flourished into a brand of metal that not many can emulate.

Phinehas has never lost momentum. Their intense and passionate live show is a hit everywhere. Largely influenced by the music of bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, and Van Halen, Phinehas is a band that loves fast beats and guitar solos while never forgetting their roots by weaving in powerful breakdowns.

Darkness Divided formed in 2010 as a four-piece band containing three brothers and ever since then have played shows with a number of well-known bands, even ending up on the bill for one of the Scream the Prayer Tours (STP III). Often one can learn a lot about a band by who they are playing shows with and the most recent Darkness Divided date was earlier in May (2013) when they played a show on The Hard and Relentless Tour with Saving Grace, Those Who Fear, and Ark of the Covenant, some of the better known Facedown Records bands. Musically, the first thing I noticed was the voice of Gerard Mora. Seeing a picture of him, one certainly would never expect the powerful deep voice, which is somewhat cool as so much of music over the years is all about fashion and appearance, so I appreciate those who don’t fit the mold. As for vocal style, it is what one would expect from the metalcore genre deep, guttural screaming/barking emotion-filled vocals, but to their defense, these wouldn’t be out of place on some more traditional newer metal albums, for instance, somewhat similar to J. Costa (Thy Will Be Done).

As one would expect given the metalcore-like sound, there are certain elements in the songs on the ep that one would expect as they are part of the “metalcore formula”. One can expect more than a few chugging breakdowns, some spoken vocals, and some clean vocals. More true to the “metal” label though, Darkness Divided does have less of the clean singing and spoken parts than even bands like As I Lay Dying. As comparing new bands to existing bands is something I always find helpful in reviews I read about new bands, I would liken Darkness Divided to a blend of For Today and a band like Thy Will Be Done. To me, much of the sound of similar bands is mostly chugging breakdowns and guitarists playing in drop-A, which is heavy in sound but often ends up muddy-sounding and somewhat indistinct. Guitars are a strong suit in Darkness Divided with Christopher James Mora providing some excellent, approaching technical/thrash metal riffs from time to time and not just trying to play heavy plodding breakdowns. This is one of the features of their sound which caught my ear and helps differentiate Darkness Divided from other bands in the genre. Riffs and verses are often faster than I expected and when the tempo picks up, they come into their own and hit their stride. Lyrics are unabashedly Christian, addressing even heavy topics about hitting the bottom and realizing that God is right there with you. From the song “Confusion”, the question is asked, “when it’s all gone, how will you live?” and then later in the song… “I have seen the greatness of the Lord, forget my plans, I now live for Yours”.

The Chronicles (ep) was produced by Daniel Castleman (Impending Doom, War of Ages, As I Lay Dying) and even though done as an independent, is certainly of the quality that one would expect to hear from anything on Facedown Records. In fact, the unknowing listener could probably be convinced rather easily that this is a new Facedown Records band, as they do have some of that “sound”. Darkness Divided also had Castleman mix and master their latest single “Redeemer” which shows an evolution in sound away from the more typical metalcore into something more. Yes, the Chronicles ep is metalcore and that label can carry a lot of negative connotations, but Darkness Divided do bring some variety to the sound that is a bit out of the norm and their latest singles show a further progression in sound that makes them a band worth checking out.

Video footage from the CD’s recording sessions can be seen below.

The new effort, described by guitarist and principal songwriter JB Brubaker as the band’s “most ambitious album yet,” turns a critical eye to the oft-maligned genre of metalcore, leading by example to prove that bands can still find exciting new ways to expand the genre.

“‘Rescue & Restore’ is about challenging other bands and ourselves, as well as fans of this music, to want more than whatever happens to be the current buzz,” explains Brubaker.

“We’ve done our best with each new album to try to push our sound in new directions and we’d like to see our peers do the same.

“People need to realize that there’s not much of a difference between a metalcore song that has a couple breakdowns with a repeating chorus and the latest Lady Gaga song. This genre used to be better than that. It can still be better than that.”

Throughout the album, August Burns Red continue to do their part to challenge the conventions of heavy music. Over the course of 11 tracks, the band artfully blend piano, cello, violin, trumpet, various percussive elements and more into their sonic arsenal, taking their music into new aesthetic territory and contorting the boundaries of the genre.

In support of “Rescue & Restore”, August Burns Red will perform all summer long as a mainstage act on the 2013 Vans Warped Tour, marking their third appearance overall and first since 2011. Dates and locations are listed below.

With “Rescue & Restore”, August Burns Red have proven that it is possible to reshape music in a way that challenges listeners, reinvigorates fans and puts art first. But for any fans who fear August Burns Red turning their back on the sound that catapulted them to the forefront of a genre, Brubaker advises them not to worry.

“At the end of the day, we are still a very heavy band,” he explains. “‘Rescue & Restore’ still has plenty of really heavy stuff, techy odd meter riffs, and all the stuff that people have come to expect from us; it just has a lot more surprises along the way.”

He always has at least one project on the boil, whether it be Seventh Angel (1987-1992 & later resurrected in 2008), Ashen Mortality (1993-2004) or My Silent Wake (2005-present). MSW specialises in gothic doom and has released ‘Shadow Of Sorrow’ (2006), The Anatomy Of Melancholy’ (2007), ‘A Garland Of Tears’ (2008), ‘IV Et Lux Perpetua’ (2010) and ‘Silver Under Midnight’ (2013).

The latest album was recorded, produced, mixed and mastered by Greg Chandler (Esoteric) at The Priory, near Birmingham (UK), with the exception of ‘Midnight’ recorded by Ian Frost at Kewsound, Somerset (UK). The line-up for this recording was Ian Arkley (vocals, guitar, keys, ebow, bass & percussion), Kate Hamilton (bass & dulcimer) and Mark Henry (drums). Their sound embraces progressive and gothic elements melded with metallic doom.

The opener ‘Midnight’ features Kate on a medieval hammered dulcimer with its resonating chiming tones. This is in sharp contrast to the progressive doom in the epic ‘Destroyer’. MSW have gone back to a lengthier song format that uses clear and barked vocals. “Feel the fear / Grow sharp as silver under midnight / Your time is here / The will to fight begins to disappear”. It also features backing vocals by Greg Chandler, who also contributes the haunting growls in the chaotic climax.

They switch back to the up-tempo, pulsating metal of ‘The Last Man’ with its gothic tinged vocals. There will be a video to accompany it. This is being shot by Andrew Spencer, who did the other promo videos for ‘Sturm’, ‘Storm’ and ‘Journey’s End’. Taking the tempo back down is ‘Oblivion’ as they return to one of the staples of the doom genre … the theme of a decaying world. “Millions of pitiful fading lives / Running in vain from the shadow of death”

Having taken it down to doom territory, they keep it there for ‘My Killer’ with its leaden riffage and raspy vocals. This features a ghostly section of guest narration by Martin Bowes. There is both hypnotically repetitive and technical guitar in ‘Wars’ as it builds to a thrashy conclusion. It draws towards to the brink of destruction with automatic gunfire and quietens into birdsong in an echo of life in the trenches.

‘Third Season’ takes the gothic elements further towards the godfathers of the genre, Fields of the Nephilim. It is filled with razor-sharp riffs, swirling consciousness and airy vocals with a grandiose reach of 14 minutes. “When we wander through the wasteland / Through the darkness, through the night / In the spring life will awaken / Warmth of summer comes in sight”

PelleK‘s second album ”Oceans Of Opportunity” has been released earlier this month, on May 10. “Ocean Of Opportunity,” is a new fully orchestrated conceptual release about the cultures and oceans of the world. For the sophomore release, PelleK has become more of a band and less of a solo release for the singer. Check our album review of the new album here.

“Ocean of Opportunity” is a 9-track melodic metal concept album mastered by Scott Atkins [Sylosis, Cradle of Filth+], featuring artwork from Jan Yrlund [Manowar, Korpiklaani+], and with the songwriting and stunning vocals of the frontman PelleK.The album will take you on a unique journey of revelation, self-realization and ultimate fulfillment, with deep and captivating lyrics accompanied by not only a heavy thick bass sound and progressive guitars and drums, but also real brass instruments, flutes, harmonicas and a variety of ethnic instruments.

Allthough being signed and having his debut album [Bag of Tricks] in shops worldwide, PelleK has chosen to release this album independently. The physical album will be sold from pellek.com, in certain shops, and will be on every digital platform on the internet, like iTunes, Amazon etc.

PelleK is famous for his powerful 4 octave vocal range, and has within a short period of time gotten millions of views on youtube, sung with singers from Kamelot, Avantasia, Trillium, Seventh Wonder, At Vance, ReinXeed++, been played live on huge televised e-sport events, done over 100 gigs through out the EU/UK and recieved incredible live-reviews. PelleK also sings for the band “Damnation Angels” whos debut album was critically acclaimed and voted best album of 2012 by many people, for instance UK’s Fireworks magazine and progpower USA owner and promoter Glenn Harveston.

Steve states “I have made a decision that I will be retiring from Christian Music as of 2015. Not exactly sure when in 2015, but our Australian Manager Vic Campbell and I are working on a plan to perform a BIG Double-Header Wonrowe Vision/Mortification show at a major festival here in Australia at some point during 2015. We are all pretty sad about this decision but when it is time, it is time. The reasons are purely physical and financial. I have always known that when the financial strain became so harsh that it started affecting my health and family then that would be the time to plan to finish. The good news is that both bands will still be active until the last show and of course I will always be around and involved in Heavy Gospel Music!! I am assured that ALL members of Mortification past and present will honour the Mortification legacy and that all will be happy to let Mortification rest where it is left!!!!!!! In 2015 I will celebrate my 50th Birthday, 30 years in Gospel Heavy Rock and Heavy Metal Mission, 25 years Mortification, 5 years Wonrowe Vision and 18 years out of triple cancer! A BIG YEAR ON WHICH TO PLACE A BIG FULL STOP.”

Israeli progressive folk metal masters Orphaned Land will release their sixth full-length album, “All Is One”, in North America on June 25 [one day earlier internationally] via Century Media Records. The cover artwork for the follow-up to 2010′s “The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR” was created by the French artist Metastazis [Paradise Lost, As I Lay Dying, Sonne Adam & Watain] by perfectly incorporating the three biggest religious symbols into one piece of art.

The lyric video for ”Let The Truce Be Known” can be viewed below.

Commented Orphaned Land singer Kobi Farhi: “I’ll say it plain and simple — ‘All Is One’ is Orphaned Land‘s best album so far. I feel that we took all aspects to a new level — the way we write, arrange, play and produce.

“We recorded the album in three countries [Turkey, Sweden and Israel] and it turned out so strong, we can’t stop listening to it.

“The album is very rich in sound, with more than 40 people participating (choirs, violins, and many traditional instruments, too).

“Our secret recipe was always the fact that unlike many other bands, Orphaned Land doesn’t follow ONE master mind that writes everything; we work in a way that ‘all is one.’ We create our music in a perfect blend of synergy and harmony and all the band members are a part of this process. We translate the album’s title and message exactly in the way we work, and we always hope we could give a bit of an inspiration to the people in the tragic Middle Eastern lands.

“We have fans all over the Middle East. We live in a place where huge amounts of people who consider themselves enemies still share one thing in common, they are all fans of Orphaned Land, and in these lands of orphans and bloody holy wars, our only weapon is music, and hopefully we will grow to understand that ‘all is one.’”

Orphaned Land‘s forthcoming effort will be the band’s first to feature guitarist Chen Balbus following the departure of Matty Svatizky in June 2012 due to “personal” and “professional” issues.

From September to November, Orphaned Land will play stages all over Europe in support of “All Is One” — but before heading out on this headlining tour, Orphaned Land will play a few festivals and shows in South America and Europe. All dates & locations are listed below.

“The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR” sold around 600 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at No. 80 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR” was released in Europe on January 25, 2010.

Orphaned Land‘s concert DVD, “The Road To OR-Shalem”, was released in October 2011 in Europe and November 2011 in the U.S. via Century Media Records.

Ashen Mortality were formed in the early 90′s in Halesowen, West Midlands [UK] and were active for a further 11 years. When the band split in 2005, three of the members went on to form MSW. The band was formed in the spring of 2005 in Weston-Super-Mare in North Somerset. Initially the band was created by Ashen Mortality co-founder Ian Arkley with other ex Ashen Mortality members.

Nowadays, MSW has new band members and they are ready to release 2 new albums. About the upcoming albums and more, you can read in the following interview with the gentlemen from My Silent Wake.

TMR: Hey guys how are things going there in the United Kingdom ?

Ian: Good thanks Eelco! We have 2 new albums coming and we are working on getting ready for gigs with the new line-up. We are writing and recording new songs all the time. The new albums are sounding really good and we can’t wait for everyone to hear them.

TMR: For those who are not familiar with ‘My Silent Wake’: Tell us the brief history of ‘My Silent Wake’.

Ian: The band started in 2005 and have recorded many albums including a split with The Drowning. We have toured with The Drowning, The Prophecy and In Vain. There have been a number of line-up changes but a lot of the old members of the band still contribute from time to time during recordings and gigs. The current active line-up is me (Ian Arkley), Adam Westlake, Mark Henry and Rich Alden. Also Marc Ellison is an acoustic member of the band.

TMR: Will you Introduce yourself and the current line-up please [name and instrument]

Ian: guitar and vocals, Mark: Drums, Adam: bass and Rich: guitar. Marc Ellison plays on acoustic recordings and gigs. The forthcoming acoustic album featured many musicians including ex band members and the metal album was recorded with me (Ian), Mark and Kate.TMR: Are you guys full time musicians ? If not what kind of job or school do you do beside the band ?

Ian: Most of us are not full time. I am a freight train driver.
Adam: I’d love to be able to dedicate myself to music full-time, but unfortunately for now I’m stuck doing an arse job as a roadsweeper.
Mark: I am a full time drummer, with various gigging local bands. I also teach drums.
Rich: I work as a storeman in a shipping department.

TMR: What is your musical background ? [for everyone personal]

Ian: I came from a self taught heavy metal background and started in the thrash band Seventh Angel in the 80s.
Adam: I’ve been into rock, metal and goth styles ever since I can remember. Which, to be honest, isn’t that far…
Mark: I’m a self taught rock/punk/indie/goth/doom drummer. I’m influenced by 80′s goth.
Rich: I started off listening to rock before the grim void into heavier thrash/black/death stuff.

TMR: Why the name ‘My Silent Wake’ ? Is there a story behind it ?

Ian: Not really. Naming bands is normally a case of finding appropriate words and linking them together. It can mean whatever you want it to.

TMR: Who writes the music/lyrics in ‘My Silent Wake’ ? … how do you get in the mood for writing music? And which bands/situations have influences you for writing music and lyrics ?

Ian: Over the course of the albums there has been a fair range of writers but I am the principal song writer. On the new metal album it was Kate and I that wrote the music and I wrote most of the lyrics. I wrote the lyrics and most of the music on the acoustic album.

TMR: How do you describe the music of ‘My Silent Wake’ the best ?

Ian: It has always been hard to pigeon hole, but it has a death/doom/goth base with acoustic songs which are generally folk or medieval style compositions. The music is very progressive with our longest song being 23 mins long.

TMR: How does ‘My Silent Wake’ stands in life till events in the world, religion and politics and in which proportion stands that till your music and lyrics ?

Ian: We have no agenda whatsoever and have varying personal views.
Adam: Especially when it comes to biscuit choice
Mark: I just love to play & listen to good music, religion & politics do not really interest me.
Rich: Mark’s comment stands as being the same for me.

TMR: For a lot of bands the lyrics are just a accidental circumstance, but for some bands they use them to communicate ! ..can you tell us how that is for ‘My Silent Wake’ ?

Ian: They are mainly written in hard times and are sometimes a case of pouring your soul out which some people find slightly harrowing. The genuine nature of the lyrics make them very real indeed and the songs are generally a reflection of my life and the lives of those around me.

TMR: Is there a highlight you will always remember, since the beginning [2005] of ‘My Silent Wake’ ?

Ian: The first gig in Switzerland and all the great times we have had in the studio.

TMR: And the worst thing were ? [if there is one]

Ian: When I lost my friend Tim Cooper to cancer some years ago. He played in the band that spawned MSW (Ashen Mortality). The MSW song ‘To Bid farewell’ is about this.

TMR: What is your favorite album top 5 of all times ? [for everyone personal]

Ian: Zeppelin 4, Tubular Bells, The Wall, Dead Can Dance – Aion, and the fifth could be many albums but today I choose: Sabbath Vol 4
Adam: Well that’s a tough one. I change my mind about this constantly but at the moment I’d say The Nephilim (FOTN), Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk (Emperor), La Chambre d’Echo (Sopor Aeturnus and the Ensemble of Shadows), Narwhal (Undersmile) and Paragon of Dissonance (Esoteric)
Mark: First & Last & Always..The Sisters of Mercy..Icon..Paradise Lost..Dawn Razor..The Nephilim, Symbol of Life..Paradise Lost..Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables..The Dead Kennedys.
Rich: Mine are also changing constantly, but what I can think of at the moment as being my faves’ would be – Scream Bloody Gore (Death), Devil Speaks In Tongues (Mortem), Slayer (Show No Mercy), Queen II (Queen – surprise!), Dehumanizer (Black Sabbath)

TMR: What makes you laugh? [for everyone personal]

Ian: Good comedy (Blackadder, Peep Show, Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf) friends with a good sense of humour.
Adam: Other’s misfortune. Oh, and comedy.
Mark: Ripping the piss out of people..I call it verbally sparring
Rich: Most stuff that isn’t deemed acceptable to laugh at.

TMR: How do you promote your band and shows ?

Ian: Online mainly. I spend too much time sat in front of the PC doing band promotion work.

TMR: How do you prepare for a show? [for everyone personal]

Ian: Take my asthma inhaler and try not to worry too much!
Adam: I down some scotch
Mark: Lots of alcohol.

TMR: Describe your show, visual and musically ? And tell us about your next shows and why we should be there.

Ian: A visual and aural extravaganza like no other : ) Musically: very heavy and normally pretty loud. Visually: 4 scruffy doom metallers having a good time. You should be there because you will have a good time too.

MSW: Metal porn.

TMR: Name some of your favorite bands to play with live [past and future] and tell us why ?

Ian: The Drowning, Esoteric, The Prophecy, Virgin Black, Forsaken, In Vain, Implaccable, Once Dead, Tor Marrock, Dalit, Attrition plus many, many others. All great to play gigs with. Nice people.

TMR: What is the dumbest question you have ever been asked? [for everyone personal]

Ian: Someone once asked me what is the dumbest question I have ever been asked : ) No… I have been asked some really strange questions but it has been a while since we did an interview. I think the questions about personal faith are very intrusive and can cause problems so they should be avoided. I have been asked a few times why I cut my hair. This pisses me off somewhat.
Adam: “Do you want tea or beer?” What a ridulous thing to say.

TMR: Do you have a life philosophy / favorite quote ? [for everyone personal]

Ian: I try not to hurt anyone by my actions but this doesn’t always go to plan. I hope I am a good friend and a loyal person as far as this is possible.
Adam: Never suffer fools. And never let the bastards grind you down.
Rich: Treat people with respect and (hopefully) get the same in return…

TMR: Are you visiting many gigs and what do you listen to these days? [for everyone personal]

Ian: The last few gigs were Orange Goblin, High On Fire and Metal to the Masses.
Adam: I’d love to go to more gigs, but, alas funds dictate otherwise. Recent gigs I went to were Conan/Bongripper, Orange Goblin and Big Naturals.
Rich: Recently saw Uncle Acid And The Deadbeats who were great and I also saw Conan/Bongripper with Ad’s which was awesome.

TMR: Tell us about the hardrock/metal scene in your area please?

Ian: A great club closed down in Weston but there are still smaller bands playing. Bristol has a healthy live scene.

TMR: What’s your outlook on the record industry today?

Ian: It is struggling, but I think people will continue to make music and adapt to the changes.

TMR: What can you tell us about the upcoming albums ‘Silver Under Midnight’
& ‘Preservation, Restoration, Reconstruction’ [such as the recording proces, the songs, who did the artwork etc ?]

Ian: SUM was recorded in only four days and has been produced by the wonderful Greg Chandler of Esoteric. This is the first release with Mark on drums and our first metal recording for 3 years. The photo is by Holger Karas and the rest of the artwork was done by Alonso Espinoza and me.

PRR This was recorded over a long period and features various ex and current band members. It will be a vinyl/download only release. All the songs have an acoustic base and the album features dulcimer, keyboards, bass, drums, vocals, acoustic guitar, 12 string guitar, mandolin, flamenco guitar, cello, recorder, harmonium and many percussion instruments.

TMR: There also will come a music video from ‘The Last Man’, what can you tell us about that ? When can we expect the video ?

The video was started a few nights ago actually. Andrew Spencer, who did our other proper promo videos (Sturm, Storm and Journey’s End) is filming this and directing it with at least 2 actors. We cannot be there for this but we know he always does a great job. We didn’t want the band to be in it anyway. The video will be a short film depicting the song. The short part I have seen is excellent.

TMR: Both albums will be released, next month by ‘Bombworks Records’ how did you get signed by them ?

Ian: We got signed after the first demo we sent them and began work on the album very quickly. We did leave them for a while and released Et Lux Perpetua on Holland’s Dark Balance but we are now well and truly back with BW with these new releases and a re-issue of The Anatomy of Melancholy.

TMR: What are your plans for the near future ?

Ian: More rehearsing, more writing, more recording, getting the band more widely known and generally putting our hearts and souls into MSW.

TMR: What advice would you give to fellow bands?

Ian: Give up and leave it to us.

TMR: Guys thanks for your time and the interview, we wish ‘My Silent Wake’ all the best … Is there anything you wanna say at last ? [any final statement ?]

Ian: Thanks for the interview, thanks to everyone who reads this and supports MSW!
