A new group of young people have recently graduated from high school. They will be experiencing many new things in their first years of college or out in the real world. Of course the topic that hits closest to home for me is the fact that many of these young adults will be exposed to alcohol and heavy drinking for possibly the first time.

I do not think it is any secret that teens participate in parties and that they drink at these parties, I did when I was their age. It was an interesting experience, one that made me feel “free” for the first time. What I did not understand and what is difficult to make young people understand is that there are consequences to this partying. Parents are not there to constantly monitor these young adults, to guide them, to help them understand what is right and what is wrong. Some people are able to develop that sense on their own and good for their parents because they obviously raised that child right. Others have to make mistakes and hopefully learn from those mistakes. But the ones who make the mistakes and are never able to learn and grow are the ones I am worried about. These are the folks that are most at risk for becoming the new generation of alcoholics.

It is so easy to go to a party your first weekend on campus and discover what it is like to drink and to be rewarded by making new friends in the process. It is a dangerous and seductive trap to fall into because before you know it binging has become a weekly routine. I would drink on Friday and on Saturday nights, I would then sleep the weekend away, and if I was lucky I could get rid of the hangover in time to go to class on Monday. Pretty soon this life style can evolve into a daily routine. Binge drinking is dangerous, college bound students often have the belief that it is normal college behavior to drink excessively. This leads incoming freshman to have the wrong perception of what is a normal amount of drinking which then causes many freshman to drink more than they can handle. Nearly half of college students who drink every weekend begin to rationalize that it is okay to drink on Thursday because they can blow off Friday class. Then it extends to drinking on Sunday because “nothing happens on a Monday anyway”. The next step is starting to think that maybe if they drink on Tuesday and Wednesday it will help them get through the week. Once that pattern is set it can be a short step to the real potential for becoming an alcoholic.

It is scary and sad to think that many young people will be consumed by this world of drinking in this upcoming year. This is why I have shared my story and is why I am dedicating my time to the promotion of my book, The Meyers Method. In The Meyers Method, I share what I have been through and what I have learned from so that others do not need to go down this road. If people have already begun down this path, then I am here to help lend a hand.

The Meyers Method, MCLDA's General Membership Meeting & SARC

Tonight I am attending the Mid-Columbia Leadership Development Association's (MCLDA) General Membership Meeting in Richland, WA where I will be selling copies of my book, The Meyers Method. I believe strongly in what they do.

Tunes on Tuesday

The song that I chose this week is "Time In a Bottle" by Jim Croce. <![endif]-->

1. Can you share any embarrassing moments from your life? Does anything stick out? In general, what are some things that make you feel a bit “red in the face” so to speak?

Falling asleep in a big, rather important meeting is one moment that sticks out. Last thing I knew the group was having a discussion - the next thing I knew someone was beside my chair asking if I was OK. I had started on some new medication and boy, did we change that rather quickly.

One of the biggest things that embarrasses me is when I stick my foot in my mouth - those "open mouth - insert foot" moments. Saying just the wrong thing at the wrong time. I am getting better at not doing that. Just have to practice engaging brain before engaging mouth.

2. Do you have any siblings? Any close friends who are like a brother/sister to you? Are you similar to each other or vastly different?

I am the oldest of 4... 2 sisters and a brother. My first sister, Connie, is 5 years younger and is pretty quiet. She stayed in our home town and married a local boy. We have fun when we get together - but our personalities are different. My next sister, Carmella, is 7 years younger and she and I are probably the most alike. We are both pretty driven and Thank you worriers. We probably talk the most often. My brother, Mike is 8 years younger. He and I are the most different from one another and have some trouble communicating. I think we just have a hard time finding something to talk about. I admire what he has done with his life, though. I get along well with all of my siblings. If there was a black sheep among us - I guess it would have to be me.

3. What type of child were you? What activities did you like to do?

I was pretty much a quiet and obedient child. Some would - and did - call me a "goody two-shoes." I was not great at sports. I liked to read, I did great in school, took piano lessons and played sax in the band.

4. You’ve been married for 30 years! For someone who is about to get married like your daughter or for singles who are looking for love, what pieces of advice do you have? What makes a marriage last? Is married life everything it’s cracked up to be?

Communicate, communicate, communicate. And - be yourself. You can't keep up a pretense forever. Don't blame each other for what goes wrong and don't take out your frustrations with outside issues on one another. Do respect one another and say thank you. Treat one another better than you do strangers or the people you work with.

I think that a marriage will last if you go into believing that this is it - the real thing. You agreed to "for better or for worse" and you better darn well deal with both. No excuses. No quitting. No taking the "easy way out." And - keep the romance and love alive. Kiss each other good morning and good night. Yup - even with morning breath. I believe that marriage is a wonderful institution. We are meant to go two by two. I love being married and, in particular, believe that I am married to the right man!!!

5. If you were given the opportunity to meet one person, dead or alive, who would it be and why? What would you like to do with that person?

I would love to meet Julie Andrews. She is amazing! I would love to sit with her and talk about all the movies she has been in. Talk about her music. The shows - from Mary Poppins, which I saw as a child, to the Sound of Music - one of my favorites - to some of the more recent ones - like Princess Diaries. I have always admired Julie's poise and panache and would just like to sit with her and have tea.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. When you were a little a girl, did you read books very often? What books were your favorites?

I loved books!!! My favorites were the Nancy Drew mysteries. It seemed like she had such an exciting life.

2. Do you subscribe to any magazines or regularly purchase a particular publication? What features do you most enjoy?

I subscribe to Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple and Reader's Digest. I am an idea person - meaning I adore reading about different ideas and incorporating them into my life. Be it decorating, or food preparation, or ways to do things - quicker, easier, cheaper - I love to find these gems. In Reader's Digest, I love the jokes and the vocabulary.

3. Do you have any pet peeves? What are some things in life that really get under your skin?

Rude, thoughtless people. It seems that common courtesy is not so common anymore in too many cases.

The other thing is professionals with whom you have appointments who always make you wait - doctors, dentists, etc. I have always felt that my time is valuable as well. I can understand an emergency once in a while - but not regularly.

4. Thinking positively- outwardly and inwardly! What are some things that you like about your appearance and what personality traits do you appreciate about yourself?

Appearance - I would have to say my green eyes and white, Irish skin.
Personality traits - ability to empathize and willingness to listen.

5. Living bright and steady- how would you define a happy life?

I believe that one of the most important aspects of a happy life is to be comfortable in your own skin. When that is that case it is far easier to do anything you set your mind to. Another important piece of the "happiness puzzle" is to try to look on the bright side of things. There generally is one - even if it doesn't seem so at the time. Knowing that what is currently happening - even if it is uncomfortable - is one of the steps I must take in my journey - gives me a very different attitude.

Being able to give back to others, or to pass it on, is another facet that brings me happiness and contentment. Whether it is teaching, sharing or giving monetarily, what I have achieved has far less meaning if I don't share it with others.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, that is!

This is a great movie that I really enjoy watching. Here is a scene from the reception that I really like:

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. We are in the process of planning her July 2012 wedding. Throughout this marvelous journey, I hope to take you, my readers, along for the ride!

We recently went to Kensington Gardens! This is the venue that Steve & Jasmine found and chose for the wedding location. They picked it out over a year ago during Memorial Day weekend. Steve's family came to Seattle from Houston and they all went exploring for a good place. It's in Gig Harbor, WA and is absolutely breathtaking! The pictures on the internet are fabulous but it doesn't even do it justice when compared with actually being there and walking the grounds. http://kensingtongardens.com/

There are fountains galore, dazzling flowers, well-trimmed hedges, and a lovely gazebo where the ceremony will take place. We are hoping for fantastic weather - thus the date in July - but they do have the option of moving the ceremony indoors in case of inclimate weather. The chairs are set up on the lawn and the processional takes place around the fountains. I can barely wait for the rest of the planning! Working with Jas and Steve to make choices and get it put together will be something I'll always remember. It's nice to know that so many of the details will be taken care of by choosing this amazing place to hold the nuptials.

Kensington Gardens will provide everything for the day except for the flowers, cake, music, alcohol and photographer. And ---- believe me - there is a lot that goes into a wedding! Appetizers, meals, waiters, chairs, etc., etc. - and a gorgeous place for a wedding will all be included. It is planned to a T and the owner is there to orchestrate every last detail.

Now that it is less than a year to the wedding, Jasmine is more interested in starting the planning. Kelly, the owner of Kensington Gardens, has recommended that we attend a wedding show in Seattle in January to get more ideas and inspiration. I, myself, am now getting more and more excited! Seeing the place they have chosen makes it all the more real.

Next week, I will share with you the story of how Steve proposed to Jasmine and include some pictures of her stunning ring! Until next time...

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. I love this song. It was prominently featured in one of my favorite movies of all time, Ghost! I imagine that many of you have seen that infamous scene of the movie when the song is played! The lyrics are simply beautiful. I love this film. I admire that is both poignant and funny. It displays how women of different generations and ages can form a strong bond with one another. I really love the scenes inside Truvy's beauty salon as well as Weezer's relationship with Drum. I also enjoyed Daryl Hannah's performance as Annelle.

This video isn't the best quality but you get a feel for the women's relationships with each other!

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. Your daughter, Jasmine, is set to get married a year from now. What type of emotions do you think you’ll experience on the big day? What aspect of the wedding are you most looking forward to?

I am pretty sure my emotions are going to run the full range from joy to sorrow, from happiness to fear, from thrilled to trepidation.

Joy in the fact that Jasmine and Steve will be starting a wonderful, new life together. Sorrow in that this truly does mark the point where she is "a big girl now!" Happiness that they have found one another and fear that all may not be always smooth sailing for them. But I remind myself that is never really is all smooth sailing - and all of life is a learning experience. I will be thrilled that the day has finally come to enjoy this beautiful celebration - but also a bit worried that it won't go completely as planned from start to finish. Just gotta remember that life is messy!!!

I think I am most looking forward to the ceremony and seeing their reactions to those magnificent, permanent words of love and forever. I can't wait to see the love reflected in their eyes and faces. I am quite certain I will go thru lots of tissues.

2. What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I would have to say getting this book published. I first had the notion of ensuring that professional women, in particular, had all of the information they needed to know that they are not alone with their issues.

close seconds are starting my consulting company, INRFixx, LLC, and being chosen as DOE Woman of Achievement in 2004.

3. Do you generally spend your time thinking about the past, present or future? Why do you think this is?

I used to spend a lot of time thinking about the past. This was not productive. We can't change the past, merely learn from it and move on. The future is something we all need to consider and plan for; and I do spend time wondering how it will all work out. However, I need to do all I can to ensure it turns out well and then leave it in God's hands.

I have tried to train myself to stay in the present. It is hard to do sometimes - but I know I need to remember that if we keep one foot in the past and one in the future - then we piddle all over the present!!!

4. What is the worst advice you have ever received (if you can’t recall anything specific, what is a popular piece of advice that you disagree with)?

Follow your head and not your heart. I think that intuition comes from the heart. If something does not feel right about a situation, even though you have analyzed it to death and it seems OK, then just don't do it. The best situations are those where you head and your heart are in agreement.

5. From a positive perspective, how do you think others’ perceive you? Does this align with the way you see yourself?

I think others perceive ma as very capable and accomplished. Sometimes I see myself that way... and sometimes I feel like I don't know what the heck I am doing!! Probly everyone feels like that from time to time.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? What do you think this says about you?

Believe it or not - I wanted to be a pharmacist, like my Dad. I worked at his drugstore from about age 14 thru college and thought that field fit me well. Unfortunately when I went on to college - I got a bit more interested in partying than studying - which did not go well with the Math and Science classes I had to take. I was pulling C's rather than the A's I was used to in high school. What this career goal said about me was that I loved the math and science fields and was a traditionalist. After many turns and corners I ended up in a scientific field after all. Isn't it funny how life sometimes turns out???

2. What is one of the best memories of your life (outside of marriage/babies/etc.)… something random that sticks out?

I don't know if this is a best memory - but when I let my mind wander - this came to mind. I had braces for 4 years and got them off, as I remember, toward the end of my Junior year of high school. There was some sort of band concert the evening of the day I got them off. This was in the days of the total "tin grin" - silver bands all the way around all of my teeth. I remember going to the high school gym and having everyone - even the kids that I wasn't close to - ask me to smile. It felt very weird getting all that attention and my mouth felt very empty and slick. That is definity a random memory.

3. What is your favorite genre/style of music? Any favorite bands/singers/etc.?

My taste in music is very, very eclectic. I like some of everything - even a rap and country song here and there - although as a genre those are not my favorites. I enjoy Kenny G, Chris Issaks, Anne Murray, Chicago, many more. I like Rock, Oldies, Jazz, Opera, Classical, and bits and pieces from other styles.

4. How would you describe your sense of style? Any particular clothing stores or trends you love/hate?

I am a traditionalist here as well. My favorite stores are Macy's, Chicos, and Coldwater Creek. Nordstroms when I can afford it - more often Nordstroms Rack. I enjoy looking at TJ Maxx to see what jewels I can find. And very much enjoy going to a local consignment store - Amber Rose. I don't do trendy at all. I do accessorize and love scarves, brooches, and dangly earrings.

5. You’ve been married for 30 years. Many people say that they knew when their partner was the “one”. Did you have any sort of emotion/recognition/etc. that relates to this phenomenon? How would you describe your marriage in one word?

I was fairly certain that Ray was the one in high school. We just sort of clicked. Socio-economic differences perceived by everyone around us convinced him that we would not work. We went our separate ways and had many experiences for the next 5 years. When we saw one another again, I knew that it was inevitable. I don't recall Ray even actually asking me to marry him. I just recall him telling me that we were getting married. I didn't argue.

Our marriage in one word: "partnership."

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. One of my favorite scenes is the one where the old Cherokee Indian says: "Endeavor to Persevere." Any movie with Clint Eastwood is a good movie. It was released in 1976 and is set right after the Civil War. It has Sondra Locke in it as well. She and Clint had a relationship from the time of this movie until 1989. She wrote a book about this relationship, titled, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." Hmm - interesting. I still like Clint Eastwood.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. This song makes me think of hopes, wishes and dreams having the possibility of coming true. I loved knowing that this movie was on once a year when I was a kid. We always made a big celebration out of it - with popcorn and treats. Of course that was before VCRs, DVRs and the ability to watch it any time you wanted. It's fascinating to think of the way things used to be in relation to today's world. This is a classic.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. Something I love (other than the American flag) that is:

a) red… fresh strawberries

b) white… wedding dresses

c) blue… summer skies

2. Describe your favorite Independence Day memory:

My daughter's very first 4th of July - we were in Maryland and went to watch fireworks at the shore on Soloman's Island. We were living in Lusby and hubby was working at Calvert Cliffs for an outage. I was staying home with Jasmine. She 10 months old. We took a blanket and sat on the grass, watching a great fireworks show. The thing that made it so special was that Jasmine was not afraid of the loud noises and all the people at all. She would ooohhhh and aaahhhh with the best of them. It was amazing to watch her enjoy herself.

3. Favorite picnic food for a holiday BBQ or party:

My favorite picnic, potluck food is baked beans cuz I make them like my Mom used to make them and it is comforting to think of her as I put it together. It is very simple. 4 reg. sized cans of Van de Camps Pork and Beans, 6 strips of bacon, cut into 1 inch long pieces, brown sugar to taste, catsup and French's mustard to taste. Mix it all together and bake in an uncovered casserole dish at 350 degrees til hot thru and starting to brown on top - but not til it is dry. Not fancy - but yummy!!!

4. What do you love the most about living in America?

The thing I love the most about living in American is the freedom to do as I choose. To set goals and be able to work to achieve them. It is knowing that I have the ability to make of my life whatever I am willing to work for. Being able to raise children who have these same opportunities is amazing. I will never, ever forget to thank those who fight to keep America free.

5. How do you feel about fireworks?

I feel that fireworks should be handled by those who know what they are doing. I love the big ones, way up in the sky - professional shows. Too many folks get injured and there are too many fires that happen thru individuals not taking care with what they are doing when playing with fireworks. I always used to love sparklers as a kid. Even those are dangerous and hot - but if handled with an adult in attendance - should still be OK. I despise the folks that begin setting the loud ones off at night - generally quite late - and begin when they are first sold about a week before the 4th and continue for about a week afterwards. How about a little consideration here.

noreply@blogger.com (C.A. This week's song is "Could I Have This Dance (For the Rest of my Life)?" by Anne Murray.

I would love to dance with my husband, Ray to this song at our daughter's wedding. I heard it the other day and just wanted to begin waltzing. Ray and I took a waltz lesson on the cruise. That was fun! The lessons only lasted about a half hour but we are now better at the basic steps. With some practice, we'll hopefully be ready to hit the dance floor at the reception!

noreply@blogger.com (C.A.
