ABC renews The Middle for fifth season

ABC has renewed The Middle for a fifth season, according to various media reports. The network has not officially confirmed the renewal, though the news does not come as a surprise.

Though the show has often seemed to miss the attention of critics, The Middle has garnered solid ratings as the lead-in to the network's popular Wednesday night two-hour comedy block.

Joining The Middle in being renewed the show's Wednesday night stablemates, The Neighbours, Suburgatory and Modern Family. ABC has also reportedly renewed Scandal, Grey's Anatomy, Revenge, Once Upon a Time, Castle, Nashville and Friday night sitcom Last Man Standing.

ABC Announces Fourth Season Finale

ABC has issued the press release for the fourth season finale of The Middle. Marion Ross (Happy Days) guest stars as the Vice Prinipal at Brick's school.

"The Graduation" - As graduation day approaches, tension begins to build between Frankie and Axl when he ignores her requests for answers about The Graduation party she's planning for his special day. Meanwhile, Sue hopes that the sixth time's the charm as she once again attempts to pass her driver's test; and during his final days of elementary school, a forgetful Brick is reminded by Vice Principal Dunlap (Marion Ross) that he's the class historian and is responsible for putting together a slideshow highlighting the last four years of school for the school assembly, on the Season Finale of "The Middle," WEDNESDAY, MAY 22 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

"The Graduation" was written by Tim Hobert and directed by series co-creator & execeutive producer Eileen Heisler. With The Middle's fourth season wrapping up thoughts of course turn to the question of a fifth season. Following last year's trend of avoiding early renewals, ABC has not yet officially renewed The Middle for next season. The show's chance of renewal is, however, practically a certainty, so don't worry much! ABC will be confirming its fall schedule at the UpFronts next week, so we will receive official confirmation very soon.

Episode: The Graduation

ABC has issued the press release for the May 15 episode of The Middle, the penultimate episode of the show's current season. Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) returns as Frankie's dentist boss, Jack McBrayer, in the episode. Dave Foley also reprises his role as Brick's school therapist.

"The Ditch" - While waiting in line at the power company to pay a late bill and dressed in her lab coat for her new dental assisting job, people mistake Frankie for a doctor and let her cut in front of them so that she can finish her business quickly and get back to saving lives. But when one of those people shows up at Dr. Goodwin's (Jack McBrayer, "30 Rock," "Wreck It Ralph") office for a dental checkup, Frankie tries to keep up the charade, which leaves her new employer completely perplexed. Meanwhile, Axl discovers that Sue has a perfect attendance record at school and convinces her to ditch a day to live life on the edge; Dr. Fulton (Dave Foley) tries to find out why Brick is so opposed to going to middle school; and Mike and Axl's fishing trip takes a turn for the worse when a distraction causes Mike to crash the boat he's towing, wedging it into a ditch, on "The Middle," WEDNESDAY, MAY 15 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

But when one of those people shows up at Dr. Goodwin's (Jack McBrayer, "30 Rock," "Wreck It Ralph") office for a dental checkup, Frankie tries to keep up the charade, which leaves her new employer completely perplexed. Wednesday's episode of The Middle finished a solid third place in the ratings for its time slot, being squeezed by American Idol on Fox and Survivor on CBS.

"The Name" was watched by 6.90 million people, down by over a million from the previous episode a month earlier. In the important adults 18-49 demographic, The Middle scored a 1.8/6 rating, dropping from 2.1/6 on February 27. The Middle ranked third by all key ratings.

ABC has announced the details for the next episode of The Middle, which is set to air Wednesday, March 27. Molly Shannon returns as Janet, Frankie's sister, in this episode.

"The Name" - Frankie's sister, Janet (Molly Shannon), comes to the rescue and offers to help run the Heck household while Frankie studies for her dental assisting school finals. But the sheer amount of disorganization in the house throws perfectionist Janet for a loop. Meanwhile, when Cassidy's ex-boyfriend pays an unexpected visit from college, Axl tries to take the high road and not act like a jealous boyfriend; and Sue wants to legally change her middle name -- which is also Sue -- in order to have a normal name on her driver's license, on "The Middle," WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27 (8:00-8:30 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
