Dangling Oval Drop Earrings with Turquoise

These gorgeous earrings from the Iced Gems collection by designer Kit Heath are 33 by 12 millimeters, and go perfectly with the necklace presented here by me the other day.

They’re a really classy pair of earrings and the girlfriend is looking at their picture with lust in here eyes right now at the time I’m writing this article. Too bad for he she’s not born in December, hihihi.

Teardrop Shaped Turquoise Stud Earrings

Here’s something interesting about turquoise: initially, this substance was known by a lot of different names, but the word turquoise was derived around 16th century from French, either from the word for Turkish (Turquois) or dark-blue stone (which is pierre turquin in french). Although turquoise doesn’t occur in Turkey, it was heavily traded at turkish bazaars to the venetian merchants, which then brought it to Europe, so this might have been a bit of a misconception Just a funny thing which I thought you might like to know.

Moving on to today’s item, this pair of teardrop turquoise earrings come from Kit Heath’s Vintage collection, and they include a presentation box as do all of our Kit Heath products. The stones are natural and have a blue-ish colour.

Circular Silver Pendant with Citrine

Yes, Anna from Manchester, that nice pair of citrine earrings I showed you yesterday does, in fact, have a complementary necklace And, as I promised you on the phone last evening, here’s a picture and a short presentation of it:

The design is basically the same as for the earrings, made out of two circles (well, three if you count the stone as a separate one). It does not include a chain, but order whichever type and length you like on the product page, as we have a wide selection here at Milton Gems.

Oval Silver and Turquoise Necklace

Seems that the sterling silver jewllery with turquoise stones I posted about on our blog here at Milton Gems was a big success.

Or is it just that December’s coming, and turquoise being the birthstone of December the reason why you’ve shown such a big interested in it?

Circular Citrine Drop Earrings

Earrings are one of our best sold items, and these circular citrine ones from Kit Heat’s Organics collection are a nice piece of handwork.

Hi-quality, natural citrine on a very narrow 925 sterling silver setting, they also have a second silver circle surrounding the one with the stone. Here’s a picture for you, to better grasp what I’m talking about:

Turquoise and Silver Ovals Drop Earrings

Today I will show you a really nice pair of earrings from the Kit Heath Iced Gems series, made out of 925 sterling silver and with genuine turquoise stones.

Pay attention though, as these are pretty long at over 5 centimeters in length, and might not be for everybody. There are ladies out there that don’t like longer earrings, or they simply don’t fit them.

So while these might not be for everybody, those women that enjoy longer earrings will definitely like these silver setting with turquoise stone earrings.

Turquoise and Silver Ovals Bracelet

Today I want to talk to you a bit about the birthstone of December, turquoise. For those of you unfamiliar with this rare stone, it’s an opaque, blue to green mineral that has been prized both as a gem and ornamental stone for thousands of years.

I for one really like the colour of turquoise. In my humble opinion, it looks really great on a silver setting. Take a look at this silver bracelet with turquoise stones:

True enough: the silver is very craftily positioned around the three blue-greenish stones. The shape of the stones is accompanied very nicely byt the silver oval-shaped rings as well. It’s about 7 ½ inches long, and indeed a really nice piece of work by designer Kit Heath, and only one of the many jewelery choices on our turquoise jewellery selection!

Teardrop Shaped Citrine Necklace

Oval Amethyst Drop Earrings

Out of all the beautiful birthstones we have on jewellry here ate Milton Gems, Amethyst must be one of my favorite ones. Or maybe it’s just that I love purple, I don’t know, but I truly honestly believe this pair of amethyst drop earrings are simply gorgeous!

I like the way the stone is cut on these ones best. It has a lot of facets, some small and some larger, but they’re all clean-cut and capture the light in a special way.

The 925 sterling silver setting designer Kit Heath has been using is shiny and bright and helps bring out the glow of the stones.

Flower Shaped Marcasite Pendant

I’ve heard it both ways: some say it looks like a two stars pendant, some say it looks like flowers, but either way it’s just as pretty.

It’s fairly large, just below 4 centimeters in length, and it has a nice engraving made out of marcasite stones on a sterling silver setting.

I was thinking of buying something like this for granny as a classy Christmas gift, but I haven’t decided exactly which of the marcasite jewellery I should get, other then the fact that I’ve already decided it will be something with marcasite stones.

Yesterday I showed you a really nice pair of earrings, but I realize now those might not be for everybody. I certainly like them and so do my myspace female friends I asked what they thought, but some women would rather wear something smaller.

Not sure if you remember but last week I showed you a piece from our inventory from designer kit heath, a twisted silver and amethyst pendant. And from the looks of things, I wasn’t the only one who appreciated it, since I receive quite a couple emails asking if we had matching earrings for that pendant (which we didn’t have at the time).

Heart Shaped Marcasite Locket

So the girlfriend was a bit upset this weekend when I stayed out a bit too much on Friday night with the guys. What can I say… it’s not my fault she doesn’t like the pub, I asked her to go along. She didn’t wanna go and it’s still me that is responsible? I don’t get this stuff sometimes…

Anyways, I managed to make it better buy buying her this marcasite locket that’s shaped like a heart, and although it cost me £40 it was worth it, cuz now I won’t have to get her anything for our anniversary this month. In fact I made sure of it and I told here this was an early present.

Of course, I also put a nice picture of us inside (one which she likes) and I also picked up a nice silver necklace from the store. Let’s just say everything’s fine in the “family” now

By the way, I was also considering this other heart with silver filigree, from kit heath, but ultimately decided to go for the locket, since I wanted to add that personal touch with the picture of us.

Silver and Marcasite Cat Brooch

Amethyst Celtic Knot Pendant

The knot is is one of the best known motifs in Celtic jewelry and art. There are quite a few celtic symbol guides available that list variations of the celtic knots, but many of the purported meanings of the symbols are actually made up. Believe it or not, some folks would con you into buying their trinkets or jewellery by telling you their designs mean “love” or “honour” or whatever else, when there are in fact no known authentic knotwork designs meaning such things.

So I won’t tell you that this pendant from Kit Heath means “undying love” or “forever faithful” or anything like that. But I will tell you instead that it is one of the best stylized representations of a celtic knot you will ever find in a pendant.

It’s quite lovely really; the clear, purple amethyst stone on the shiny silver bed give it a feeling of distinctiveness which you won’t find in many pieces. The chain is not included, but it can be ordered without any hassle right on the product page in any length you find to be most appropriate.

Flower Shaped Marcasite Stud Earrings

Hello friends,

Packing an order for one of our customers yesterday I noticed this pair of silver earrings with marcasite stones that I didn’t even know were in our inventory (as some of you know, I’m rather new here at Milton Gems).

I must say, the finesse of the handiwork on these earrings is quite impressive. They’re not too small, at 14 mm in diameter, but not too big either, and they’re shaped in the form of flower petals. I bet they’d make a pretty set, combined with our double marcasite star pendant which you can find here.

Twisted Silver and Amethyst Pendant

Funny story about amethyst folks. The name comes from the Ancient Greek a- ("not") and methustos ("intoxicated"), and these poor people actually believed that the stone protected them from drunkenness. Now, why the bloody hell would anyone want to protect himself from that, I do not know, but apparently these fellows made drinking vessels out of amethyst in the hopes they would not get intoxicated with liquor.

I can’t promise you that this Amethyst Stones Silver Twist Pendant will do you any good in that regard, but what I can promise is that you will be wearing one of the hottest items on our inventory. I mean… just look at it. Have you ever seen anything this pretty?

New Look Children’s Jewellery Pages

We at Milton Gems have had a new look lately. Nothing too different but just a new theme to the pages and we how it makes it easier for people to navigate and see our products.

Apart from the look of the pages we’ve also been busy adding more products from different suppliers. One of the new ranges is the Little Diamonds range of silver children’s jewellery set with diamonds.

Black Mother of Pearl Drop Earrings

Take a look at this pair of Kit Heath drop earrings made from silver and black mother of pearl.

At a nice size of 38mm x 11mm and are an open oval shape.

As with all our Kit Heath items, these drop earrings come with a lovely cream coloured designer presentation box.

Children’s Birthstone Necklace – Silver Guardian Angel

Another part of the Kit Heath designer children’s collection are these pretty silver guardian angels. Standing on a circular birthstone, you can choose the one for the month required. The picture to the left is peridot which is the august birthstone and a rather fetching green.

The silver chain is 12 inches long but it has a 2 inch extender if required so will fit a wide range of children. It’s a solid 4.5 grams in weight.

As with all Kit Heath jewellery, it comes in a very nice designer presentation box – the children’s box is a colourful red and includes a bag as well which is ideal for this childs necklace.

All in all, this kids birthstone necklace is a great present – choose the childs birth month and you’re away!

Kit Heath Children’s Alphabet Beads

A new feature of the Kit Heath children’s silver range of jewellery are the beads. They are mainly letters but there also other types of symbols such as butterflies, heart, dots etc. There are special bead necklaces and bead bracelets that are designed to go with the Kit Heath beads and they’re not static. What I mean by that is one day, your child might want her name spelt out on her bracelet or necklace. The next day, however, she might want her pets name, or friend or whatever

The beads are 0.8cm across and they’re made of silver and coloured enamel – both sides have the letter on it but with different coloured enamel for greater versatility.

These beads and necklaces / bracelets make wonderful gifts and we’ve only had them up a few days and they’ve been selling well – they make great gifts. In fact, we recently went to France and in a local restaurant was a lovely waitress who is often helped by her daughter – Samia. We thought it would be nice to send a bracelet with her name in beads. We will be going back soon and even though we can’t understand each other, I hope to see the look on her face when she wears it.

New Silver and Marcasite Brooches

Silver brooches always go down well as gifts and we at Milton Gems have a nice range. Here are a couple of new marcasite brooches that caught our eye so much so that we put on our site.

What do you think of the image to the left? The two cats cuddling – one with mainly marcasite and a silver collar, the other is silver with a marcasite collar. This would be a perfect gift for either a marcasite brooch lover or a cat lover.

Busy, Busy, Busy in the Children’s Jewellery world

For a lot of people, thoughts of Christmas is a long way off – even though the weather we’re currently having is hardly summer-like! However, it’s at this time of year that we (at Milton Gems) put together new ranges that are being brought out at this time of the year in time for Christmas. This means that there’s always a lot of new and exciting items going onto the site which is one of the reasons that there’s not been a blog entry for a while – there’s just so much going on!

But I’ll try and bring you up to speed on what’s been added – I’m sure you’ll like it!

The popular range – D for Diamonds – has had a lot of items added. Hearts, fairies and horse jewellery are popular at the moment and as always, all D for Diamonds come with a presentation box.

Something else I’m pleased about is that Kit Heath, the widely awarded silver jewellery designer, is in the process of bringing out a new and updated range of Kit Heath children’s jewellery – it is an exclusive range and we’re one of the few who have been chosen to supply the items. Everything comes in a stylish and colourful designer presentation box and bag and I’m sure you’ll love the new pieces – I like the beaded initials which will go down a storm. We shall be getting stock in a few days and I shall be putting the items on as soon as they’re available.

Also on the theme of children’s jewellery, we have added quite a few items to our popular Christening jewellery range especially the christening bracelets, christening pendants and christening earrings. Our Christening bangles remain extremely popular and we’ve also added some more especially non-adjustable ones that are perfect for engraving your Christening message (we don’t engrave, I need to add).

One thing that we are working on is Boys jewellery – we have a nice range but I want to add more and we will be doing in the very near future.

Anyway, that’s a bit of news with regards to our updates on Children’s jewellery. I’ll do a seperate post for adults – just so I don’t confuse things!

Child’s Silver Alphabet Christening Bangle

This is a popular bangle of ours – we call it the alphabet bangle simply because it has all the letters of the alphabet engraved on it and is a perfect Christening gift.

Silver Bracelets – A Category Walkthrough

There are three pages of silver bracelets and on the first page, the piece that stands out as being the mosts popular is the one to the left – a green agate bracelet set in sterling silver.

Agate is extremely popular in the east and is becoming more and more so over here. Green agate jewellery has the deepness of colour that isn’t abundant in the market place at the moment.

All in all – a very nice piece.

Page two of the bracelets category and the most popular item is a piece from the famous designer, Kit Heath.

The bracelet has 5 dainty, open hearts linked together. As with all Kit Heath items it comes with a deluxe presentation box so it’s ready to give as a gift straight away. Of course – you also have the option of having it giftwrapped.

To be honest, the 2nd silver bracelet page had a couple of items that could have been listed here – there’s some nice pieces.

Last silver bracelet page (at the moment…we’re always growing!) and there’s this silver t-bar bracelet there.

Silver and Paua Shell Butterfly Pendant

Paua shell comes from the seas around New Zealand and the beautiful green and blue colours are used to great effect in paua shell jewellery.

This butterfly pendant is shaped like a butterfly in silver and inlaid with paua shell. It comes from the famous designer Kit Heath and while it doesn’t include a chain, one can be ordered at the same time.

All in all, this silver pendant is a pretty piece and certainly a talking point for all butterfly lovers.

I just thought I’d pass on a new site I found – called Emperor Jewels and is a US based jewellery site selling titanium, tungsten, stainless steel but mainly gold (in multiple colours such as rose, yellow and white gold). They have the normal section for womens jewellery but they also have mens and childrens jewellery.

They send out orders with free postage over $99 and all in all, it was a nice surf – they had a good range of items and pieces that caught my eye was a 14k gold onyx ring and a 14k gold men’s chain necklace which were very nice too. It’s easy to fill up your shopping cart and then the hard decisions have to be made…

Bridesmaids – Such An Important Part Of A Wedding

Certainly, the bride is the major part of the wedding but you can’t forget the bridesmaids. Traditionally they are to help the bride on her big day, make sure she’s ready and gets to the Church properly and so on, but they are an integral part of the ceremony.

White Gold Cross and Diamond Stud Earrings

White gold jewellery is always popular whether it’s white gold pendants or white gold earrings. It gets its white colour because it’s yellow gold mixed with another metal, for example nickel, giving it the whiteness.

Sometimes it can be mistaken for silver or other, less precious metals but the white gold lasts and, like yellow gold, doesn’t tarnish.

Sea Horse Jewellery

Any child would look even cuter with a nice silver sea horse set of jewellery. We have a sea horse pendant, sea horse bracelet . They are all from the well respected girls D for Diamonds jewellery range so, obviously, they have a diamond which, in the case of the seahorses, are the eye.

The zip charm has a lobster claw which allows you to attach it to (almost) anything – zips, clothes, etc. and is approx 15mm x 8mm in size. The pendant is approx 18mm x 8mm and it comes with a 14″ silver chain. The seahorse bracelet is 14cm – 16cm / 5 1/2″ – 6 1/4″ (adjustable) and has a number of pretty pink cats eye glass beads.

As with all D for Diamonds jewellery, each item comes with a pretty lilac coloured presentation box.

Paua shell comes from the sea around New Zealand and its beautiful blues and greens make it ideal for jewellery. We at Milton Gems have a good selection of paua shell jewellery including the paua shell bangle (as seen to the left).

Marcasite and Mother of Pearl Flower Pendant

Some jewellery pieces just get all the attention. Take this mother of pearl flower pendant, for example – we have shown it on our blog a couple of months ago and it has proven to be extremely popular – so much so we’re showing it again!

The silver pendant is a nice size – approx 23mm on its widest point and weighs in at about 4.3grams. It is hallmarked to prove its silver heritage and, as with most of our pendants, doesn’t include a chain but you can choose one on the product page.

It is made from marcasite in the centre and edges and the petals are of mother of pearl making for a beautiful effect.

Ruby Pendant and Earrings set in Gold

Ruby jewellery, which is the birthstone for july, and gold makes a great partnership. The rich, deep red colour of the ruby plays with the light and set in with gold makes for a rich combination of precious materials.

We at Milton Gems have a nice and growing collection of ruby jewellery. One of my favourites is the heart shaped ruby pendant (to the left) which goes perfectly with a nice gold chain. Silver Bling, Bling Charms!

I’ve just added three more silver charms and all of them certainly go bling! Studded with clear cubic zirconia stones, they catch the light beautifully. They are not small (especially the starfish charm which is approx 37mm), the heart charm is roughly 21mm and the snowflake charm is around 17.5mm.

All have a lobster claw so they can be worn on bracelets, necklaces, handbags or whatever you want to clip them on.

Oval Marcasite and Onyx Earrings and Pendant

We had a nice lady buy a set of marcasite and oxyx jewellery recently and I liked the way it looks. It certainly works well together – the flatness of the onyx surrounded by the texture of the marcasite yet the light reflects different – the onyx is almost like a dark mirror.

The marcasite and onyx pendant (as shown to the left) doesn’t come with the organza ribbon (but can be ordered as well) and would require quite a large chain. The size of the pendant is approx 34mm x 24mm and it weighs approx 8.1 grams. It has a hallmark to prove that the marcasite and onyx is set in silver.

These earrings make up the matching set – an oval of onyx surrounded by marcasite and set in sterling silver.

The size of these silver drop earrings are approx 26mm x 18mm and each silver earring weighs in at 4.4 grams. Hallmarked to show the quality of these onyx and marcasite earrings.

Children’s Initial Pendant

Take a look at our childs initial pendant to the left – it has a diamond in it and includes a 14″ silver chain and includes a “babies” box. The size of the pendant, obviously, depends on the letter but an example is the M is 7mm wide. All are approx 6mm tall (not including the bale). The pendant is part of our Kit Heath children’s range of jewellery which we have only just put on.

As mentioned, the initial pendant comes with a silver chain so would make a great present for a child.

The Joys of the Silver Jewellery Trade

The title of this post says what I feel, I suppose – selling silver jewellery and gold jewellery (come to think of it) is a funny old game. You do it for a while and you think you know a little and then something stumps you. Take the silver necklace to the left, for example. A nice piece. An attractive piece. But I wasn’t sure if it would sell. I put it on Milton Gems and left it to see what happened. I expected to sell a little but I think the fact that the necklace was a little different caught peoples eye and it’s currently our most popular item.

So, moral of the story – sell a range of items because you can never tell and you’re more likely to have a piece that sells like hot cakes.

Anyway, I’m off to make sure we have enough of the necklaces and order some more.

Double Star Shaped Silver and Marcasite Pendant

Some call this marcasite pendant a double star. Some call it a double flower. I call them stars but, either way, this marcasite set in silver pendant is proving to be extremely popular.

The top, smaller star is connected to the bottom by a link so the bottom moves freely and the stars are made of a central circle with 8 (petals?) on the smaller and 12 on the larger star. In total, from top to bottom the pendant is 37mm approx. The top star is 12mm, the bottom is 16mm and in total weighs around 3gms. The bale of the pendant is behind the top star.

As with all our pendants, it’s not sold with a chain but you can choose to order one (we do this as many people have their own favourite charms that they reuse).

New Category – Boys Silver and Gold Jewellery

For quite a while we’ve been selling children’s jewellery and while had some boys jewellery (a few pieces), the majority was for girls – especially silver. However, we’ve recently been asked a few times if we have a larger range of jewellery for boys so we decided to put some more pieces on.

A Few New Silver Charms

Today we’ve added a few new silver charms to our collection. One that I think will be popular is pictured to the left – they’re initials charms. You can choose the letter you want and because of the way they’re made (with a lobster claw) they can be attached to a chain to make an initial necklace, or bracelet. They can even be added, of course, to handbags, zips, mobile phones and the like. Perfect for giving to someone you love – just don’t forget and send them the wrong letter!

Two other charms we’ve added are shown below - a pair of scissors charm and a flower flip flop charm. The scissors don’t open (just wanted to put that in) but as with all our charms, they’re incredibly detailed and would be a great gift to give to a hairdresser. The flip flop is pink and green enamel set in silver and made to remind you of summer days!

I shall be putting more silver charms up tomorrow – I think it might be a heart day in honour of Valentines Day that’s just been.

Turquoise – The Birthstone of December

December’s birthstone is Turquoise, and is also known as the 5th and 11th wedding anniversary stone. Its hue can range from the common green blue to a light sky blue. It is believed by some that turquoise got its name from “pierre turquoise” which means “Turkish stone” in French.

Some people believe that the name comes from the Persian word “fiouze” which means turquoise. The Egyptians mined turquoise as far back as 6,000 BC. Some may be surprised when they hear that the finest turquoise comes from Iran, not the American Southwest. Citrine – The Birthstone of November

The birthstone attached to November is citrine, which is said to increase creativity and feelings of joy. Citrine is also given as the anniversary gemstone for the 13th year wedding anniversary. The name comes from a French word for lemon, “citrin”, and comes in a variety of quartz.

Citrine is mined abundantly in Brazil but has been found in areas of Bolivia. The colours range from a vivid yellow to deep oranges as well as a favorite the “Madeira red”. You can mine natural citrine in the Ural Mountains of Russia, France, Madagascar, and Dauphine.

Opal – The Birthstone of October

Opal is said to enhance insight and dispels fear, and is known as being the birthstone of October. Opal is also given to as a 14th wedding anniversary present. Opal gets it name from the Greek work “opallus” which means to see a change in colour. This is obvious because opal has the ability to reflect wavelengths of light for a beautiful vision. There are more than a dozen different colours of opals.

Opals are mined from deposits located mainly in Southern Australia, but there are still areas where you can find small amounts such as Mexico, Nevada, Brazil, and Czechoslovakia.

Opal is actually a non crystallized silica which is a mineral found near the earth’s surface in the areas where ancient hot springs once were. Roman’s referred to this gemstone as “Cupid Paederos,” which means a child as beautiful as love. The Romans also believed that opals fell to earth from the heavens in a flash of lightening.

On crowns opals symbolize hope and purity for ages. Ever since the 14th century there have been several cultures that have thought that this stone was an Eye Stone which watches over royal families. They thought that the opal was the king of all gems because it has the variety of all the colours in the rainbow.

You can purchase a black opal which has a dark body hue compared to most other opals, a white opal also referred to as a milky opal, a boulder opal which is very dark and magnificent in colour, the crystal opal which has a transparent or semi transparent body tone and include forms of black and white crystal, and finally the fire opal which is an American name meaning an opal that has a specific red hue.

It doesn’t matter which colour of opal you purchase just make sure you know what the hue symbolizes.

Sapphire – The Birthstone of September

September’s birthstone is sapphire and is known to bring physical and emotional balance. Sapphire is also commonly given as the 5th and 45th wedding anniversary. The Greek word for blue “sapphirus” gives sapphires their name.

Sapphires have long been a tradition for priests who think they symbolize purity, as well as king s who thought they symbolized wisdom.

Compared to other gemstones, sapphires, like rubies, are a variety of corundum. Sapphires come in magnificent colours that range from pink and lavender hues to a rare orange colour and the most popular deep blue sapphire that helped earn its name.

Sapphires have been mined since the 7th century BC in an area of India now known as Sri Lanka. They are also found in other areas around the world such as Australia, Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, America, Thailand, Myanmar, Tanzania, China, and Myanmar.

The way that corundum crystals are formed it causes large sapphires very rarely making the largest ones very valuable. The 563 carat Star of India which is on display at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. This sapphire is known as the most famous of star sapphires, which are cut to reflect light from inclusions within the stone and reveal a bright six pointed star pattern.

Peridot – the Birthstone of August

August’s birthstone is Peridot and comes from the Arabic word “faridat” which means gem. Peridot is often referred to as the evening emerald because when put under artificial light it has a green glow. Peridot is also used as the 16th anniversary gemstone.

Ancient Greek and Roman jewellery was heavy in peridot and has been popular all the way back to 1500 BC when the Egyptians began mining it. Egyptians referred to the stone as the “gem of the sun” and even believed it had the ability to lower anxiety, enhance verbal communication, and help in the success of marriages.

The transparent colours in peridot come in a variety of greens ranging from a light yellowish green to a dark olive colour. The truer the green hue is of the peridot the most expensive it is going to be. If there is any slight colour of brown in your peridot it greatly lowers the value as well as any visible flaws.

You are able to find peridot crystals in the black sands of Hawaii where this specific gemstone is quite abundant. You are able to find peridot here in large sizes. The Hawaiians believe that peridot is the tears of Pele, their volcano goddess.

Ancient Hindus referred to rubies as the “Lord of Gems”. They are well known as one of the most prized of all gems throughout all periods of history. The intense fiery glow of rubies is known to come from its internal eternal flame.

The ruby is a symbol for many as everlasting love and is a combination of mineral Corundum which is called sapphire when it is any other colour except red. Only the colour red is referred to as ruby.

It is now known that Greeks actually believed that pearls were the hardened tears of joy that the Love Goddess shook from her eyes as she was born from the sea. Paua Shell Jewellery – Some Information

In New Zealand abalone is called paua in the Maori language. It is difficult to harvest paua and the rights can only be granted under legal Maori customary rights. The daily recreational limit is 10 paua per diver with a minimum shell length of 125 mm. The Ministry of Fisheries says that in the years of 2004 and 2005 approximately 1,000 tons of paua will be poached with about three fourths of that undersized.

New Zealand’s polished paua shells are common souvenirs because of their beautiful blue, purple, gold and green hues. If you transport unprocessed abalone shells out of New Zealand you are breaking the law.

The amazing colour of paua shells are completely natural are polished to gain maximum luster to show the true colours on the shell.

Paua is a certain species of abalone that is only found around New Zealand. Locals only utilize the natural paua that has washed up on the shoreline. They don’t use fake colour enhancers, plastic resin coatings, or dyes like some manufacturers do who sometimes harvest thin paua shells.

There are three different species of Paua found in New Zealand including silver paua- Haliotis australis, Paua- Haliotis iris, and Virgin Paua-Haliotis virginea. Paua is a Maori name that was given to a small group of mono-valve mollusks found in their coastal waters.

Paua are found in the shallow coastal water along rocky shorelines in depths of about one to fifteen m. They feed on nearby seaweed and can survive the strong tidal surges because they can cling to the rocks with their muscular foot.

The paua is actually ionic in New Zealand and its black muscular foot is considered a delicacy while its shell is used in jewellery and as keepsakes because it is one of the world?s most attractive shells.

Diamonds are so beautiful that ancient Greeks believed they were splinters of stars that had fallen to earth. Some even believed that there were tears of the Gods. The exact origin of diamonds is a mystery to scientists and geologists.

India is thought of as having the first large source of diamond mining. Ancient Hindus called the diamond Vajra, meaning lightening because of the sparks of light that it emits as well as its incredible strength. By far the most beautiful stone on the planet, it is also known as the hardest substance in the world.

Diamonds are found today in Australia, Botswana, Russia, and South Africa.

For quite some time diamonds have been known for having certain medicinal properties. In the middle ages gemstones were thought to heal illness if the person took the diamond in their bed with them.

It is believed that Cupid’s arrows were tipped in diamonds so it makes sense that over the years this beautiful stone has gotten a reputation as being the gift of love.

Diamonds used to be reserved for only royalty and others who were entitled to their symbolism of strength and courage. In 1477 Archduke Maximillian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy and set a tradition of diamond engagement rings.

Interestingly enough early Egyptians believed that the vena amoris also known as the vein of love ran directly from the heart to the third finger on the left hand.

Today Is A Red Charm Day!

As promised, I’ve been adding more silver charms to Milton Gems. Not too many today but I felt in a red mood – all the charms are a nice, bright red colour!

The first one you can see to the left is a five pointed star charm. As always, with a lobster claw so you can fix it easily.

Below you can see two more charms. What better way to celebrate summer than with a nice, juicy red strawberry? Well, I can’t guarantee you the sun and nice weather but we can send you a strawberry charm to remind you of better weather. And give a symbol of your love with the red heart charm – show someone you care.

New jewellery pieces added – silver necklaces

Apart from the silver charms that we added yesterday (and we’re going to be adding some more today) we have added some more exciting pieces of silver jewellery.

The necklace to the left is of crystals and silver and it’s on a 17 1/2 inch rubber thong – all in all, an unusual necklace.

We’ve added 2 more new necklaces and can be seen below.

My personal favourite is the 3 colour flower necklace – it’s simple, elegant and effective. Three different flowers each with a different colour. The chain is approx 16 inches long and each flower is around 33mm in size and in total the necklace weight about 23grams.

Another necklace with a flower is the bright silver one shown – the silver has a hammered finish which is effective. The chain is approx 17 1/2 inches and the flower is around 29 mm in size. Check out the flower necklace here.

All in all, we have some very nice pieces that we’re putting onto Milton Gems Jewellery - you’ll love them, I’m sure.

As you can see from the picture to the left, the amount of details is enormous – look at the bootlace and the heel and top of the boot shimmers in the light as well. Three Coloured Silver Flower Necklace

It’s a strange business. You put on pieces of jewellery you really think will do well and it doesn’t fly out the door. But you put on something that you’re not sure about and people love it – and this silver pearl bunny rabbit belly bar is one of those situations. It’s nice – it has a silver pearl for a body and silver face, ears and bunny feet. For hygiene reasons it’s on a 316L surgical steel bar as are all our belly bars.

Flower Shaped Mother of Pearl and Marcasite Stud Earrings

This pair of delightful flower shaped stud earrings are made from sterling silver with marcasite and mother of pearl.

Quite large for stud earrings, they are approx 19mm from side to side and weigh approx 2.9 grams each (5.9 grams in total).

Each of the petals are mother of pearl and edged with marcasite and also have a centre of marcasite. They are hallmarked sterling silver.

Silver Dragonfly Jewellery

Having just posted about a dragonfly pendant, I thought I’d put up a page about dragonfly jewellery in general. They are certainly popular and we are in the process of growing our collection of dragonfly jewellery.

The picture to the left is of a dragonfly brooch which is silver with a marcasite body and mother of pearl wings.

Dragonfly Pendant Set in Silver with Mother of Pearl Wings

Dragonfly Jewellery remains popular and some of our most popular jewellery pieces are shaped like dragon flies. Just like this pendant, in fact.

The dragonfly is set in sterling silver and its two pairs of wings are made from mother of pearl. Its silver body has clear cubic zirconia stones in it. In size, the body is approx 23mm (not including the bale) and 31mm wide (wing tip to wing tip). The total weight is around 2.4 grams. As with all our pendants, it doesn’t include a chain but the image shows a snake chain which can be ordered from the dragonfly pendant page.

Marcasite and Mother of Pearl Butterfly Brooch

This pretty silver butterfly brooch isn’t done justice by the picture but it’s a fine example of a marcasite and mother of pearl brooch set in sterling silver. The centres of the wings are mother of pearl (often lighter in colour than the picture shows but as it’s a natural material the colour can vary slightly). The wings are edged with marcasite stones which catch the light extremely well. The body is silver and is hallmarked to prove that.

The butterfly weighs in at approx 13 1/2 grams and the size is 37mm from head to bottom of wing and 53mm approx from left to right.

The back of the butterfly brooch has a fairly substantial pin so will be extremely hard to get it lost.

Silver Heart Pendant Inlaid with Mother of Pearl

This is a pretty gift to give your valentine and it is an ornate silver heart pendant. It is inlaid with Mother of Pearl and the front is convex with cutout flowers and vines. The back of this silver pendant is flat and is of Mother of Pearl.

The size of this pendant is approx 20mm x 25mm and weighs in at 5.1 grams. It is from the popular designer, Kit Heath, and comes in deluxe packaging as standard.

The pendant to the left shows a silver chain but the price doesn’t include one (many people like to use their own chains) but you can choose one if you wish on the product page.

The March Birthstone – Aquamarine

The Birthstone of February – Amethyst

The signature February birthstone is amethyst which is characterized by its many variations of purple. When amethyst is subjected to extreme heat it changes colour to a yellow coloured amethyst referred to as burnt amethyst.

Amethyst is made up of several different varieties of quartz mineral. Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethystos which means sober. It is common belief that the name was made after the colour of wine.

You are able to mine amethyst is South American countries that include Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, and Argentina. You are also able to mine it in African countries such as Zambia, Argentina, and Namibia.

There are a few key locations you can find certain amethyst. In Guerrero, Mexico you can find dark deep purple amethysts, known to be one of the most precious in the world. Also in Vera Cruz, Mexico you can find pale crystallized amethysts that have grown in light coloured rocks.

In Maraba, Brazil the crystal is generally medium or pale colours. These amethysts are commonly cut. In Rio Grande de Sul, Brazil you can find amethyst stones from large volcanic rocks and is generally big.

North Carolina, USA offers some beautiful blue-violet coloured amethysts. Maine, USA used to hold amethysts but they aren’t for distribution any more.

The Birthstone of May – Emerald

Emerald is the birthstone for May and is known for being the 20th and 35th wedding anniversary stone. Many believe wearing emerald brings you wisdom and growth. This is commonly given as a gift for an anniversary or as a symbol of love and fidelity.

At one point in time emeralds were prescribed for eye diseases because the beautiful colour of green was thought to be quite soothing to the eyes. In fact early stone cutters kept emeralds at their working tables to look at as a way of giving their eyes a break.

The ancient Egyptians mined emeralds in the eastern region. In more recent times North Carolina is where the new source of quality emeralds can be found. You can find more emeralds in other areas of America, Colombia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Russia.

Egyptians engraved emeralds with the symbols of spring foliage to represent eternal youth and buried the stones with the dead. The ancient Romans thought emeralds were associated with fertility and rebirth.

The Incas worshiped these beautiful emeralds. In the 1500’s they were invaded by the Spanish Conquistadors who savagely stole their precious gemstones and even raided the mines. Now many of the world’s greatest emeralds are lost at the bottom of the ocean inside Spanish ships.

Emerald is made up of the Greek word smaragdos which means green stone. Emeralds can vary from a deep blue-green to green hues and some have are a yellowish green. If the colour is too yellow or blue then it loses its emerald title and becomes a different type of beryl.

The most beautiful emeralds are most commonly found in Colombia. They are known to have a deep grass green colouring with a highlighting of blue. Emeralds are sure to please anyone as a gift.

The Birthstone of April – Diamond

By far the most precious and coveted of the birthstones, diamonds are formed deep within the earth where there is enough intense heat and pressure for carbon to crystallize. Diamonds are the main choice for engagement rings. The diamond also symbolizes the 10th and 60th years of marriage.

Diamonds are found today in Australia, Botswana, Russia, and South Africa.

For quite some time diamonds have been known for having certain medicinal properties. In the middle ages gemstones were thought to heal illness if the person took the diamond in their bed with them.

It is believed that Cupid’s arrows were tipped in diamonds so it makes sense that over the years this beautiful stone has gotten a reputation as being the gift of love.

Interestingly enough early Egyptians believed that the vena amoris also known as the vein of love ran directly from the heart to the third finger on the left hand.

Giving a diamond for any reason is sure to be appreciated.

Valentine’s Day – The History and Giving of a Special Gift

Valentine’s Day dates back to the Roman period when King Claudius was ruler. This day was celebrated in a festival as honor to the queen of Roman gods. This queen is known as the goddess of the female sex and matrimony.

The following day was celebrated as the Lupercalia Feasts. The night of the festival was only for the youth and the rest of the time they were kept separate. This is the idea of Valentines Day.

A different common theory of the history of Valentine’s Day is the sacrifices that the Christian named Valentine did for love. There was a certain requirement of members of the army and the emperor was unable to make it. Most didn’t want to go and be involved in a war because they had a family. He came up with an idea to stop people from becoming married. He went so far as to ban marriages all together.

Of course many people were against this law, and refused to listen. So a priest by the name of Valentine secretly held weddings. Then became the tradition of Saint Valentine’s Day which is celebrated on the day the brave man died. This tradition is celebrated around the world.

In earlier times Valentine’s Day was a time of giving love notes and expressions. Many people would send anonymous letters and cards to others as secret admirers. In modern times gifts have dominated this celebration. Some may think this is materialistic but in fact many big gifts are given with love and emotion.

Even if you know your love is true you can still find a great way to express it in a Valentine’s Day gift. In fact gift giving on Valentine’s Day is such a big industry that there are endless amounts of gifts that are especially made for this day.

Marcasite Flower Pendant

This pretty little silver pendant set with marcasite and mother of pearl is a perfect example of vintage style jewellery. The silver set pendant is shaped like a 5 petal flower with a circular centre that’s studded with marcasite. The petals are mother of pearl and edged with marcasite all set in sterling silver.

Marcasite Feather Brooch

It must be said that I like marcasite brooches. I made a post in november about our most popular brooch (the dragonfly brooch) and it’s still selling well. Another brooch I really like is our marcasite feather brooch (picture to the left) and we have just received a new batch.

Shaped like a curved, dark feather the brooch is made of multiple cone shaped pieces of marcasite set in sterling silver. It is approx 82mm from point to point and about 36mm wide so it’s a fair size. It weighs in at 15 1/2 grams so all in all it’s a fairly substantial size and large enough to not be hidden if worn on a coat.

When moved, the dark grey marcasite stones catch the light and glisten impressively. All in all, a very nice piece and the picture, unfortunately, doesn’t do it justice. You can see more marcasite / vintage style jewellery in its category.

Amethyst and Silver Pendant

The designing team at Kit Heath are famous for making beautiful silver pendants and this example of amethyst jewellery (amethyst is also the february birthstone) certainly shows their skill at making simple and elegant pieces of jewellery.

The twisted silver pendant drops approx 45mm and has an eye at the top for your chain to go through (chain not included, as always). At the bottom, it has 4 amethyst stones getting progressively smaller the higher they go.

Made of sterling silver and includes a designer presentation box you can also have it giftwrapped for a present.

Christening Gifts

When a child gets Christened they are often given a lot of christening jewellery which is, of course, great. But some people want to give the youngster something a little different and this happened this morning. I have just spoken to a lady on the ‘phone and she asked my advice. Christening bangles, Christening bracelets, Christening pendant – she had thought of these, of course. But I then suggested a child’s tooth pot (this is literally a silver container for keeping the childs first tooth). The lady agreed and all is well – she promised to let me know how it was received by the babies parents.

The tooth pot is only small – 22mm x 15mm – but then…what more do you need? It is a D for Diamond piece so has a diamond.

We have two types of pot. As you can see above, we have one with a pink flower on it and the diamond in the centre. The other has a fairy on the pot and star on the lid – the diamond is in the centre of the star.

Both are in sterling silver and includes a lilac presentation box so they’re ready to be given as a gift.

So – if you want to be a little different and give something that’s going to be remembered for years to come, try a tooth pot.

Citrine Jewellery – the November Birthstone

Citrine jewellery is rapidly becoming more popular as a jewellery gemstone mainly due to its affordability, durability and attractivenes - three features that are sure to please anyone who likes beautiful jewellery! Little Boys Christening Pendant

One thing that I’ve noticed recently is that there’s a lack of jewellery for little boys, especially Christening jewellery. I’m looking around at suppliers to put that right because, after all, around 50% of people who get Christened are, in theory, boys!

One of the boys christening jewellery pieces that we have is shown here – a nice boys silver cross pendant with a diamond in the centre. It comes with a 14 inch silver chain and it includes a blue presentation box. The length of the pendant is approx 15mm and width 10mm.

Next I’m going to write about a boys christening bangle – it’s certainly ideal for a boys christening.

Gold Pendant with Amethyst and Diamonds

Today seems to be the day for gold jewellery! You go for weeks without me putting anything up and in one day there’s a pair of gold earrings and a gold pendant!

Anyway, today we sent out a nice amethyst and diamond pendant for a customer – the picture is to the left. If you know about birthstone jewellery, you may know that amethyst is the february birthstone and diamond is the april birthstone. I would assume it was for a birthday in february but who knows – it could be that they just loved the pendant.

The size of the amethyst stone is around 0.47ct and there’s about 0.02ct of diamond. The size of the piece is approx 5mm x 9mm. Normally we don’t measure the bale but because that’s where the diamond is, we’ve taken that into account.

Ruby Stud Earrings

It only seems yesterday that I posted a message about the garnet earrings just like this. In fact, it was the 27th December but that’s last year and time stands still for noone!

A customer purchased these gold and ruby stud earrings and I just feel that the image doesn’t do them justice – there’s so much more “life” to the real ones – the way the light sparkles off of the rubies. Trouble is, you can’t really bring that to images but we do our best. As most know, ruby is the july birthstone and were thought to guard against wicked thoughts, amorous desires and disputes.

They are 9ct yellow gold and have circular rubies which are approx 3mm x 3mm. Click here to see more of these ruby stud earrings.

Garnet Jewellery – The Birthstone of January

Well, it’s the end of December (where did Christmas go?) and coming upto January and the month of Garnet is here – the january birthstone.

Found in a wide range of shades of red, Garnet is most loved for its deep red and is was used widely in vintage Victorian jewellery and with that style of jewellery being fashionable now, we have seen an upturn in people purchasing garnet jewellery.

Garnet is supposed to represent faith and generates a calming influence as well as give the wearer restful sleep. All are very healthy benefits for wearing this birthstone of january!

Christmas is almost here!

Well, the jewellery blog hasn’t been updated as much as I would have liked lately – with the Christmas rush it’s been all hands to the pump trying to make sure that the presents people were ordering were getting to them on time. There’s going to be quite a few people who open their presents on Christmas morning and see new pieces of silver and gold jewellery. I sure hope they like their gifts and that the work was worth while.

This year has certainly seen an increase in marcasite jewellery being bought. We have always had a fair few sales of it but this year it seems more fashionable than ever which I’m happy to see. No. 1 is marcasite earrings – they always go down well as gifts. Next in popularity were marcasite pendants. The most popular item by far in marcasite over Christmas is a marcasite locket shaped like a heart. We had a little review of the locket if you’d like to have a look.

All in all, a very satisfactory Christmas trading period. We’ve had some very encouraging comments made about our stock and our new supplier of gold jewellery has certainly been a good find – we shall be putting more gold earrings and gold pendants on the site as well as other types of gold jewellery such as necklaces and bracelets.

Freshwater Pearl Jewellery

A pearl is created when an oyster gets a grain of sand inside it – the oyster tries to ease the irritant by covering it in layers of nacre. Over time, the layers increase and the grain of sand turns into a pearl – a spherical, ball of nacre. Freshwater pearls are created the same way but instead of the oyster naturally getting the sand inside it (which is purely chance) the sand is added by people – so it’s almost guaranteed to get a pearl in due course.

One of our favourite designers – Kit Heath – uses pearl a lot in their pieces to great effect. We also like to have pieces where the differences in colour are highlighted – which they certainly are with our marcasite jewellery (example images can be seen below).

Marcasite and Silver Bracelet

A nice example of a marcasite bracelet, we posted one out this morning. 7 1/2 inches long, it’s the standard size for a ladies bracelet. It is made up of multiple links or sections and is patterned with squares and semi-circles and flowing lines. Nice and attractive and substantial enough to make a nice present especially when presented in a gift box.
