A Violinist in the Metro: Urban Legend?
This is a story that appeared in newspapers, websites and blogs all over the world since 2007 - An urban legend?

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.
“No matter how
persistent the illusion time is, it is still and illusion.”
Albert Einstein

The other day I watched a BBC documentary on ‘Time’ by
Professor Brian Cox called 'Do You Know What Time It Is'. The interesting point was that time is
nothing but an illusion. It’s a trick.

It is different for each and every one of us as we live in
individual bubble-like lives. We have
our own perception of what time really is.

They had someone phone Sydney where it was midday from
London 11am the day before. Which time
is correct? What is ‘now’ here can’t be
‘now’ there too.

and response there is a space.
In that space in lies your power and freedom to choose your response
In those responses lie your growth and your happiness.

Between whatever happens to you in life and your response
there is a small space in time. In that space you can choose to let go and be
in auto pilot by having blind faith in that you will be ok. Or on the other hand
you can take over the controls and have complete control of your destiny.

We all have the power of choice.
The more we exercise this power to choose.
The more freedom you get and your space grows larger.

On the other hand the more a person does not choose to use
this space wisely.
The smaller this space becomes until there is no space at all.
They spend all their time reacting to everything and anything in life.
More than often they are the complainers.

A man walking home along the street notices a complete stranger
standing ahead of him.

The stranger smiles and politely asks him if he would like $1 million to spend
on anything he deeply desires, but he must spend it at the local mall.

The man readily agrees and can’t believe his good fortune.
He walks into the mall and instantly sees a suit. It is a horrible colour and design but he
says I will have that and buys it.

Finds
an ugly dining table that is outdated but thinks I will have that and buys it. Finds a huge range of books he will never read
let alone like them and buys the lot.

This goes on all day until the money is gone.

When the man gets home he complains and rants and raves to
the stranger.
Why is my home filled with all these things I don’t want, I don’t like?

The Stranger replies “You were asked to spend the money on
what you deeply desire. The choice was
yours to choose what you liked not what you don’t like”.

Recently I was invited to speak at an event; while I was sitting
in my seat waiting I felt the familiar unwelcome feeling of nerves building-up. The heart starting to beat faster the
thoughts of key points I needed to make bouncing around in my head.

I found myself starting to second guessing everything from
opening words to reminding myself not to “mmm” and “ahhhh”.

This all brought back to me from many years ago a lesson I learnt
about speaking from a group of friends.
One of them was a confident young corporate highflyer; she was attending
a public speaking course and was trying a few of her newly learnt tricks on us.

What she had us do was to stay seated at the table and talk
about something you are very passionate about. We all took a turn and were having a good
laugh. Now she arranged the chairs in
rows like a hall than asked us to stand up with a fake microphone and talk
again about the same topic.

Now we all stumbled and struggled where moments before in
the same room to the same people it was so much easier.

What happened?
Why such a difference?

I was talking to a friend today. He was explaining how he had
unexpected visitors stay with him over the weekend. He came home and walked in the door and put
his car keys down in an unfamiliar place.

It wasn’t until the next day that he realised that the keys were
missing. He started to search around in
the normal places and pace around the house.

Funny thing was that he noticed that his mind was starting to overreact
by panicking and thinking of a ‘plan B’ by trying to work out other ways of
getting to work while he was still searching.

Suddenly he stopped and did something different. Walked to the kitchen, poured a glass of water
sat down and relaxed allowing the panic to totally subside away. He then slowly
got up and walked into the spare room put his hand around the back of the couch
and picked up the keys. From a place he would never normally put them.

Where does the power come from that makes some people so successful?

How can one person reach amazing success?

Yet another and more than often a person with more qualifications,
overall higher skill level plus having more odds stacked in their favour is so
unsuccessful in life?

Some might say ‘They are lucky’ or ‘They land on their feet’.

But more than often luck has nothing to do with it….

One of the key factors to getting the real power house of success working
for you is passion.

The successful person uses repetition with passion over a long period of
time. Often they are not even aware of
it. They seem to just get caught up in the passion of loving what they do.

In fact most of the people that get this continued success would do what
they do even if they didn’t get paid for it.
It’s not just about the money.

Have you ever noticed negative thinking comes easier to us than
positive thoughts?

That through the day we often think negatively before positive. It is easy to beat yourself up thinking you’re
a negative person when maybe you are not negative after all….

Imagine you had an over protective mother that is with you every
moment of every day. No matter how fast
you run and hide she is there inside your head always.

Warning you of things like:

“Don’t touch that, it might burn you”.

“Don’t run or you might fall”

“Don’t walk or you might be late”

“Don’t be late or you’ll get in more trouble”.

This over protective mother is trying to warn you of every possible accident
that might happen to you all through the day.
All day chatting to you, fully intending to be helpful by trying to
protect you from every possible outcome.
Like most mothers she has been there for you since the day you were
born.

“A small leak can sink a great ship” Benjamin Franklin

If we look up at the stars at night what you’re seeing was
‘Now’ for the stars in time millions of years ago.

Not now, not this second as
you are seeing it. It is just an illusion as some of these stars may no longer
exist. It all happened in the past. You
are looking at the past and not the now as it may seem to you.

What has happened to you in your life up to this point is
not who you are. It is what you have
become from your thoughts and thinking and actions from the past.

It is the small thoughts and the things we do often in our
day to day habits to where the real mind power is. As you begin to change your thoughts and no matter
how small, your new reality with instantly follow.

Have you ever driven a car that was out of alignment?

It’s hard to hold the steering wheel steady. If you let go the car has a mind all of its
own and pulls you away from your desired direction. You quickly find out that you can’t let go of
the steering wheel if you want to keep control and stay on the road.

Most things in life are so much easier to deal with day to
day when you are deeply happy and aligned within yourself about who, why, where
and what you are.

A misaligned vehicle takes much greater focus and much more physical strength just to keep it pointed in the right direction. Your life isn’t any different.

It is just like when you are about to take-off in a plane.
“If a mask should drop down in front of you put yours on first before attending
to others”. Success is really all about alignment. When you’re out of
alignment, with whom you are and with what you came here to do. You are not completely in control of your
actions.

As we grow up in life we are educated and trained to fit
into a box that society believes that we need to conform too.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

We are taught everything from writing, maths to reading.
We spend all our younger years in schools learning all we need so we can take
on the world for ourselves.

But the ironic thing here is the one thing we all use every moment of the day
for everything we do we get no training for.

Just left to our own devices.

What am I talking about?
Your mind…

Everything you do in your day is first started with a
thought in your mind.
A thought first goes through your mind about getting out of bed, having a shower, making a coffee in the morning or a thought
is used first to finish that important report. It all starts with thinking.

Yet in school we get no training on how to get the best from your mind or
better still what kind of thinking is good for you.
What thinking and thoughts gets results.
What habits you should encourage or avoid.

We spend most of our lives busy at being busy.

On the phone, working, driving, texting, twittering,
facebooking, catching up for a coffee or watching mind numbing TV. The list of distractions that we are adding we
add to our lives is endless.

It seems that we are always looking to the outside for inner
satisfaction.

When it comes to finding something truly fulfilling in life
more than often we do the same. We look outside
of us to fill the empty spaces. This is
great to start with in the honeymoon period.
But you soon grow use to this ‘new thing’ and very soon you need to work
on consistent renewal or replacing it with something else. Just to fill the
same empty space as before. This goes on
and on.

Siddhārtha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, said,
“Peace
comes from within. Do not seek it without

The ironic thing is the only way to true inner satisfaction
is from the inside out. So why do we
keep looking on the outside in?

The simple answer is that we still think and act on that
seeing is believing. When the truth is believing
is seeing.

As a man walked a desolate beach one cold, grey morning he
began to see another figure, far in the distance.

Slowly the two approached
each other, and he could make out a girl who kept leaning down, picking
something up and throwing it out into the water.

Time and again she hurled
things into the ocean. As the distance between them continued to narrow, the
man could see that the girl was picking up starfish that had been washed upon
the beach and, one at a time, was throwing them back into the water.

Puzzled,
the man approached the native and asked what she was doing.

The girl replied, Throwing starfish back into the ocean.

The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.

The old man said, don’t you realize there are miles and
miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?

You can’t make a difference!

After listening politely, the girl bent down, picked up
another starfish,

and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, she said

I made a difference for that one.

The Past is not who you are, it’s who you were.
James Ray

I lot of people believe that the past is what has made us and is still shaping who we are today.

To a certain degree this is true but only if you allow it.

There will be some really great moments from the past that have helped to mould you and make you. But for most people they focus of the low moments of falling down and where they feel are their weaknesses.

We can more than often limit our ability to become what we want to be, both today and in the future. We put up walls of limitation with our thoughts where there really are no walls. By choosing to hold on to negative feelings from events from things in the past.

It brought to my attention just how little we understand the brain itself and how primitive we have been to understand how one person is successful and yet another with the same background and schooling is not.

They thought it might be the size and weight of the brain. This has since proven false.
They thought it was the learning in those all-important early years of life. This is a factor.
They highlighted the belief that is out there that you can’t teach and old brain new tricks.
That you were either born with the ability to be a genius or not, just black and white. This is since proven to be false.

The conclusion of the documentary was that now neuroscience understands that the brain is always looking to grow. Looking to find new pathways and connections, in fact they found the more connections the knowledge of learning the more your brain grows.
Do your thoughts and thinking affect your health?

At least over a long period of time they must.

Funny thing is we all know this and yet very few do
something about it.

There are plenty of things in life that we know are slowly
moving and affecting us yet we don't question them. Just because of the speed.

Like shadows from the sun slowly moving throughout the
day yet we rarely notice them. The second
hand on a clock also moves slowly hour to hour, day to day. We know there is movement
but the speed is so slow we don't necessarily notice it. Yet we do not question
it.

I have just
received an email asking to help with visualization.

Saying “I
am just not good at this I close my eyes and then my mind wanders all over the
place and I see everything but what I want to see. I have been trying over and
over.. Help". Marie

I have had
this question more than once so let’s take a quick look at it.

The mind
processes most of our thoughts in images.

Start by
doing something very simple like this that you know.

Get and
apple and place it on the table in front of you stare at the apple and start to
imagine the taste and eating it while keeping your eyes open. When you are
ready slowly close your eyes and do the same. Picking up the apple in your thoughts and
slowly eating it. Hear the snap and crunch

Have you ever noticed that if someone unexpectedly comes up to you and gives you a little encouragement even something very small, just how much better it makes you feel?

Or on the other hand if someone tells you the opposite or tells you that you look a little pale and unwell. You suddenly feel worse or quickly check yourself in the mirror. In fact, now that they have brought this to your attention you start to feel like you could be a little off colour when you felt amazing just a few minutes ago.

The mere suggestion sends the subconscious into overdrive.

A little word of encouragement or empowerment can change your day. It can make you feel like it is all worthwhile and puts a smile on your face and spring in your step.

If this makes you feel so good then just imagine how it makes the people you care about the most around you in your day to day life feel; if you were to be the one offering the empowerment.

The era of the same job for life is over, thank goodness.

The time of people getting up in the morning and facing every working day with the dread of another boring dreary day at work is over.

If your parents were like mine they worked where their parents worked whether they wanted to or not. If they had hopes and dream to be something different there was always a major battle that split brothers, sisters, marriages and families.

People that go to work and spend the day clock watching, waiting for the next break or live for the weekends are missing out in life. There is something out there for everyone, for all tastes, hopes and dreams.

Dream up the world you want to live in and then make it happen.
Bono

Keep it simple - Less is more

Often in life we find that less is more…

Steve Jobs says: That often in the morning he looks in the mirror and asks himself.

If today were to be the last day of my life, would I still want to do what I am about to do today?

If the answer is no for too many days in a row, then it is time to change something.

Have you been saying no for too long in your life?

If so, what should you be changing?

Less is more:

The first thing that should jump to your attention is the things you would say no to for the above question.

No one likes it and the crazy thing is we all do it.

When I was a child I found that when I did a maze puzzle backwards by starting at the destination and working back to the start. It wasn’t much of a puzzle at all. Every option quickly became much clearer. And it is this approach I want to take to stress.

After years of reading and research I have found that over 90% of stress is caused by this.

You have a 'very important to you' personal goal on your agenda and other items that are not so important keep getting in the way.

I have had a few requests for more information on the 8 Simple Ways to tune into the Law of Attraction: 8: Mix and Match.

Years ago I was told this story by a fellow worker.

The Ham Sandwich Effect:
