Friends & Neighbors is proud to announce changes to deepen the agency’s senior leadership team, following across-the-board organic client growth and new business wins that include Agency of Record for the University of Minnesota.

Changes include the addition of two senior team members to Friends & Neighbors: Tesa Raymond as Account Director and Beth Tarr as Finance Director. Raymond joins Friends & Neighbors from Peterson Mila Hooks where she was Director of Client Services. Prior to this she held senior agency positions at mono, BBDO, and Mosquito, as well as ten years at Target in the Beauty, Home, and Fashion categories. At Friends & Neighbors Tesa will oversee the day-to-day management of the University of Minnesota business.

New Finance Director Beth Tarr joins the F&N team after nine years with space150, overseeing some of that agency’s major growth years. A digital brand strategist and sought-after account team lead, at Friends & Neighbors he oversees a list of growing clients that includes the Minnesota Timberwolves, Anytime Fitness, SMART Care Equipment Solutions, and JNBA.
Before joining F&N, Aaron began his career, rising quickly through the ranks at both Olson and Modern Climate.

“Our firm has continued to grow over the past year and we’re deepening our talent bench accordingly,” says Mark Bubula, president and co-founder, Friends & Neighbors. “We’ve seen current clients asking us to expand our relationships, which is always incredibly gratifying, because it means we must be doing something right; and we’ve been fortunate to bring in some major new partners to the agency that we’re excited to work with. The changes to our senior team will help us be in the best possible position to manage both and plan for the future.”

Solve debuts new Goodwill campaign

                    Local

Long known as a place to drop off gently used donations when decluttering your
home, Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota is beginning to look more like an eclectic retailer for millennials. With the donate part of the business model well understood, the new campaign presents Goodwill as a surprising alternative to consider for your shopping.

The new campaign was created to drive home the purpose of Goodwill, which is eliminating barriers, such as limited skills, or lack of transportation or clothing, to help people get jobs. The organization helps move four people into the workforce every single day. While not widely known, the workforce training and services it provides sets Goodwill apart from other charities.

“We needed to evolve our brand perception to better align with our mission. Goodwill is so much more than simply a destination for your donations. Since 1919, we’ve been transforming lives by eliminating barriers to work. When you donate or shop at Goodwill, you help Minnesotans go to work,” said Melissa Becker, Marketing and Communications
Director, Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota. With over 50 retail stores throughout Minnesota, the non-profit is part of Goodwill Industries International and National Easterseals. With a vision to create a world where everyone experiences the power of work, Goodwill-Easter Seals is a leader in workforce development, providing education, job training, and placement services.

The new campaign includes television, OOH, and video content for digital and social. A partnership with St. Paul’s Lake Monster Brewing has outfitted the brewer’s taproom with soft seating sourced from area Goodwill retail stores. Taproom POS carries the message that all items are for sale from Goodwill with proceeds going to its local services and programs.

Should Advertisers #DeleteFacebook?

By Brooke Hanson, Digital Project Manager at Kruskopf & Co.

Here’s what we think the data collection scandal means for targeted advertising.

In the wake of the latest Facebook user data scandal, clients have been looking to us to answer one question: what does all of this mean for targeted advertising campaigns on Facebook? We think: not much.

It’s true, 50 million of Facebook’s users had their profiles, and their friend’s profiles, and their friends’ friend’s profiles scraped for information. It’s like a digital STD hit the Facebook community. Users are outraged, and rightfully so. The #DeleteFacebook user boycott campaign is popping up in newsfeeds everywhere, and even major advertisers are taking a stand. Big players like Mozilla, Sonos and Pep Boys have all publicly announced they have pulled at least some advertising efforts from Facebook, but we believe it’s really only a temporary move to drive home the point about the importance of safeguarding user profiles. Mozilla has stated they are “pressing pause” on their ad campaigns, but also noted that they appreciate CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s promise for increased improvement of data privacy efforts on the platform, leading us to believe they will indeed be back. Sonos will only turn their campaigns dark for a week, and Pep Boys has said that they are simply halting until corrective action is taken.

Facebook looks bad right now. The stock is down and trust among the online community is not high. But with 2 billion users and a promise to uphold their responsibility to protect information going forward, will this be the demise of Facebook? We think not. Our client campaigns certainly aren’t targeting all 2 billion users. We’re targeting only highly-focused, specific audience segments and making sure our clients’ budgets are reaching only those within the set parameters. So even if half of the Facebook community disappeared (and we don’t think it will) we are still maintaining highly effective campaigns for our clients.

The Twins Home Opener is tomorrow. A few of us at The Egotist plan on going and certainly intend to check out Adam's latest work titled "Northern Lights."

Earlier last month, Adam was commissioned by The Twins to create a new public mural for Target Field's Bat & Barrel. Located in the space formerly known as the Metropolitan Club, Bat & Barrel is a dynamic new club open to all fans.

The space offers fans a vibrant game day social experience with unique sightlines and seating options, from drink rails to community tables. This new space features operable glass windows, allowing fans to become a part of the Target Field experience while being inside the club.

SixSpeed for Kris Bryant's Prank Pizzeria

It’s not every day you get to design a prank pizzeria for an MLB all-star, so when Red Bull tasked SixSpeed with just such a thing, they jumped at the opportunity. Kris Bryant, third baseman for the Chicago Cubs, has developed a reputation for being a prankster and teamed up with Red Bull this year to play a trick on three unsuspecting fantasy baseball leagues during draft day in Mesa, AZ.

The challenge was to create a phony pizza company logo for Bryant’s upcoming prank. The idea was to have Bryant show up at draft day parties disguised as a pizza delivery guy from “Kristio's Pizza & Wings” and surprise the unwitting fantasy baseball teams. Although Red Bull came up with the name Kristio’s Pizza and Wings (a combination of Kris and Mario), they needed a logo that looked legit enough to pass as a real pizza joint but wasn't overdesigned.

There's a new site in sight

Sometime this week, you'll notice The Minneapolis Egotist will have a new look and feel. It'll be more of an evolution than a revolution, but there'll be quite a few solid updates we’d like you to know about that may not be obvious at first glance.

Member Profiles: We chose not to migrate member profiles from the old site. There were many spam accounts and because you can build such a richer profile on this new version, the old way simply didn’t transfer.

With the new profile pages, each member essentially will have their own mini Egotist website to build out as a portfolio. You'll be able to add videos alongside images, write about your work in detail and include as many pieces as you choose. We'll also delineate between individuals and companies, so people looking for your services can more easily find you.

As a member, you'll have the opportunity to pay a nominal fee to have your profile featured prominently on the site for a week (or more if you choose) for added visibility.

Jobs: We’re proud of the strength of our job board and seek to maintain its prominence in helping connect great Minnesota talent to great Minnesota agencies. For a small fee, a new feature will allow companies to display their job post across highly trafficked areas of the site to further increase reach.

Events: We’re building out a new area dedicated to events designated for us in the creative industry. You'll be able to post your own events in detail and we’ll point visitors to them throughout the site.

You can get a preview how things'll look over at The Denver Egotist's new site.

Cue cooks up new brand just in time for Taco Tuesday

Cue has cracked the code on Millennials: They love causes, they love value, and they love tacos. That insight led to a remarkably simple strategy culminating in an incredibly effective brand they named “Dollar Taco.”

It’s an accessible brand with an ironic wink and Millennials are eating it up. With an innovative supply chain and a distribution channel second to none, Dollar Taco is slaying hunger one dollar at a time.

“Cue nailed the look and feel with an authenticity that speaks to the culture,” says Melissa Shank, Brand Manager, Dollar Taco. “Process Yellow isn’t a color just any brand can own, but by complimenting it with black, we got to something very proprietary.”

The look and feel may scream value, but appetites aged 22 to 27 are saying “Mmm.”

Vibes Earplugs Giveback Project

Here's a little feel-good story to kick things off this wintry Tuesday.

Former Shark Tank contestant and Minnesota-based Vibes is giving the gift of hearing to children in need through a charitable project with Hear the World Foundation.

Vibes Hi-Fidelity Earplugs are reusable earplugs designed for sound quality. Unlike traditional foam earplugs that block and muffle sounds, Vibes lower the volume of loud environments to safer and more comfortable levels while still allowing the wearer to hear everything around them clearly.

Vibes' mission is twofold: giving users the opportunity to protect their own hearing health, while also giving disadvantaged children the opportunity to hear, perhaps for the first time. Each pair of Vibes purchased directly gives back to this virtuous cycle.

Before working with Sussner, the product had found success in Japan and within niche U.S. markets, such as the golfing industry. But their goal was to land a much wider audience, specifically through getting into Target stores.

For their expansion into the U.S. mass market, Amino Vital relied on Sussner's packaging prowess to pump up their product presentation. The primping paid off, as Amino Vital can now be found on shelves at Target and in the hands of athletes nationwide.

Cue uncorks new work for Miller High Life

With so many craft products capturing market share in the beer category, Miller High Life felt the time was right for bold change.

Taking a product to the next level with incremental product improvements can only go so far, so the High Life brand decided to up the ante in a different way. "Some consumers were confused by a beer calling itself 'The Champagne of Beer.'” notes Seth Holcomb, head of research for the iconic brand.“We determined that by delivering literally on that promise, we could finally align reality with a claim we’ve been making for years. It was a huge investment in our operational infrastructure, but the result is a product that finally makes sense.”

Fresh Meat Friday: Vanessa Berglund

                    Local

We're about to share one of the top young creatives in the Twin Cities. If you, or a youngin' you know, have roughly 0–5 years of professional experience and a fantastic book, for the love of God, please send the info to us at mpls@theegotist.com.

Twin Cities, our fresh cut this week is soon-to-be graduate Vanessa Berglund. Let's get to it, shall we?

What are your creative aspirations? Where do you see yourself in five years?
"Five years from now, I'd like to be a designer at a studio in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, working on branding, packaging, illustration, and typography projects. I really love learning and helping others with their projects, so I'm also interested in getting my master's degree and eventually becoming an adjunct professor at a local university."

What led you to where you're at now?
"I grew up loving to make things: my dad had a woodworking shop in our basement that I used to play around in, and my mom was always encouraging my siblings and me to do creative activities: crafts, painting, drawing, etc.

I received a lot of encouragement from teachers over the years to pursue something in the arts, and this stuck with me through high school, when I was deciding on a college major.

I was considering a couple different career paths, but I knew that if I didn't pursue art and design, I would always regret it. I applied for the College of Design at the University of Minnesota, and I've always been really happy with my decision."

To date, what are your top three favorite projects?

CURIOUS CUB
Curious Cub is a brand of honey that entices consumers to try unique, unexpected flavors of natural honey. This sampler pack includes an engraved wood carrier and three flavors of honey: buckwheat, sage, and clover. Each jar features a hand-drawn illustration of the “curious cub” playfully exploring a floral field of its corresponding flavor.Featured on the Dieline.

INCANDESCENCE
Collector's edition candle-making kit designed for Incandescence, a candle company that specializes in natural, organic ingredients, and a modern aesthetic. Kit includes instructions, soy wax flakes, cotton wicks, matchsticks, four scented oils (rose, orange, chamomile, and patchouli), four candle tins with illustrated patterns, and custom engraved wood box.Adobe Design Achievement Awards 2017 Semifinalist

SCOUT
SCOUT, an acronym for serve, create, observe, unite, and thrive, is Christiansen Creative's new internship program that pairs interns with local, non-profit organizations. The branding is a modern take on old-school Boy/Girl Scout paraphernalia, evoking feelings of playfulness, fun, and learning while still staying professional. Interns (scouts) earn badges as they progress and grow throughout the duration of their internship.Creative Director: Tricia Christiansen

Are there any cool new projects coming up that you can talk about? If so, what excites you about them?
"I'm currently working on some tattoo care products as a passion project, designing the branding, packaging, and illustrations. I love that it has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and challenged me to try out a new design style that people wouldn't normally expect from me."

Killer stuff, right? Check out more of her work here. And, seriously, if you've got a design gig opening up in the near future, keep her in mind. The work pretty much speaks for itself. Plus, we hear she's a pretty nice person, too.

This is Paper Darts 9th print project and their 9th year of publishing weird, ugly, funny, fiercely feminist content.

Volume 7 features an incredible and diverse collection of stories. In "If Water Were Blood," Maggie Ryan Sandford imagines a world where it's no big deal to use blood in maxi-pad commercials.

In "Niñas del Fuego" by Elisa Luna-Ady, girls create a tradition of starting fires in protest of child trafficking.
