Without question, the very best network marketing leads result from good relationship-building skills. A poor practice is to "slam 'n' jam" people ... like a vacuum cleaner salesman! When we talk about MLM, a "fish" is someone with whom you have first built a relationship. You don't do that by selling them something. You build relationships by talking with people and offering them something that brings value into their life. Then you can offer them something else. Find out exactly what they want, and bring that to them. That is how you will build trust, build a network of people who value your friendship and will follow your lead. Without that network, success is very difficult in MLM or in life.

When you're talking to someone about your network marketing business, one of the most important factors in their mind is the training. A prospect wants to be certain that they'll get effective training, and that it's easily accessible for them, and that it's not an overwhelming course. Plus, they want to make money as quickly as possible. If it's a training course that takes weeks or months, you will lose them. They need to look at it and see quick and easy.

Part of the thinking here is that they quickly realize that they will need help training the recruits they bring into the business. The longer the training takes, the less time they will have to actually bring in new people. So the ideal situation is to be part of a team that does training for all the team members and the new associates they bring in.

The Bad News in Your MLM Contract

What would you suppose is the most critical element of your computer based home business? It's not your products, your website, your upline, or anything of the kind. It's your Contract.

When you begin to build a MLM business, you have chosen to agree to some company's contract. A lot of people don't realize that, but it is true 100% of the time. You probably don't remember, but you checked a box saying you read and agree to the Policies & Procedures. That step must be done in order to begin marketing any MLM product. So what I would ask you is ... did you actually read the Policies and Procedures? (Most people don't.) That is the legally enforceable agreement between you and the network marketing company.

Do you have a clue what you have agreed to? It might take you by surprise. Heck, you might be absolutely shocked. There's a good chance you'll find statements making it clear that you - the rep - may be terminated at any time for any reason with 30 days' notice. You'll find companies use this wording on a regular basis. They let it pass until you have good money coming in, and then they terminate you. Who do you think gets your stream of income? Remember, this contract was written by company lawyers.

Your company probably will not terminate you to steal your check unless they get themselves in financial trouble. But it happens more times than you think. If you want a solid foundation for yourself and your family and your team, then you definitely want a contract that can't knock the wind out of your sails.

You'd never, ever take any work and not know what you'll make per hour or per week or per month. What you're paid is your number one or number two question, which makes it pretty unusual how people get into network marketing without knowing the answer to that question. They know how much they WANT, but they usually have no idea what kind of production it will take to produce the income they want.

It's not that hard to figure out, so there's no reason not to do it. For any income goal - let's say it's $10k - you will need a certain sales volume in your business. Find out what that is. Let's call that X. Next, you need to find out what the average volume per current distributor is. Some people order irregularly, some people don't order. What is the actual average monthly volume per distributor? Let's call that Y. Just divide X by Y know how many people you need in your business to make the income you want.

If you need 400 reps to achieve $10,000 a month, you can plan how to do that. If it takes 3,000 distributors to make $10,000 a month, then you'll need a different plan. But you can't plan unless you know how many reps you will need.

A lot of people in MLM get mesmerized by the few who make the really big money. You'll find a very few big dogs who get 6 figure or even 7 figure incomes a month. The ebook "Success In 10 Steps" by Michael Dlouhy describes how those guys really look at you! It's pretty interesting.

An MLM company believes in eliminating the 'middle-man' out of this chain and making sure that you make all the money in the chain. MLM is a business of trust. If you like the product or service, you will naturally refer it to people you know. When they use the product/service or promote the idea, you make money. This is a fascinating way to make residual income that will guarantee you happiness. This is the business opportunity that will give you time forever to do the things you had always wanted to do.

2. By the way, Pyramid schemes are illegal. In a chain or pyramid, people give money to a certain business owner or company who does not provide anything of value in return. In MLM you use the high quality product or service at a discounted price. Further you are backed by a supplier and a proven support system that gives you world-class training to do business in an ethical way.

3. Let's take the example of the lady who told her friends about an interesting brand of shampoo that did wonders to her hair. This is a Million Dollar Question: How serious are the owners about a LONG TERM business? If you are going to build a business for your future, you need to make sure that the owners are as serious about your future as you are. There are some that are not unfortunately.

They may talk about it, but you need to SEE it. They need to make sure they make decisions based on long term growth, not short term profits. This is a key sign to look for. Talk to people and see if they have made any recent changes to the compensation plan, or the requirements to qualify for your check, or consistent changes in product pricing.

If they have, and it is not the first time, beware. They are thinking short term profits. Owners that are serious, have proven to do what they need to do internally, in house first, and only as a last resort take money from the field. And ask around, and even see if you can talk to one of the top earners, or one of the owners themselves.

Does the mlm product you are looking at have a one of a kind reputation? Does it have a unique marketing proposition?

Is it a truly unique product, or honestly, just another "me too" product or product line? Me too products can fade from view in the marketplace quickly in MLM.

Your products MUST be unique, and no other quite like it. Yes, there can be many skin care, weight loss, make up, nutritional products out there, but the product you are considering must have a unique "sizzle" to it that sets it apart. There are many vitamin products, but what does the product have that makes it unique? This is a HUGE test for long term product viability, as well as what the next products will be like.

A MLM opportunity may have products that come across as sleek, sexy, and hot. But if they are not unique, they will have a limited life span in MLM.

4) MLM Opportunity - Idiot Proof Training System.

A good MLM opportunity will have a training system that can be used 24/7 and can train anyone anytime, anywhere. It does not replace the role of the sponsor, but a good training system will train the new distributors quicker, and with more impact.

This is a brutal truth fact: Most sponsors do not train their people. That is just the way it is, and I wish it wasn't like that, but it is. Ask anyone who has been in MLM for a while. They will say the same thing, if they are honest. That is why that a good training system, including training manuals, cds, online training, and live events and conference call training is a must. That gives the new distributors a "menu" to choose from and to start getting their training immediately.

And it must be step by step. If the MLM opportunity has these things, or working on them, that is a great sign that they are serious about their field's success.

5) MLM Opportunity - The Better Business Bureau Factor.

Simply, in a good MLM opportunity, there cannot be a lot of complaints with the BBB. It is that simple. Yes, you will always have disgruntled distributors, that is part of the business. But a lot of complaints from all over on shipping, getting their checks, refunds, products, legal challenges, all must be considered when looking at a MLM opportunity.

Every company I know of that has had massive MLM Success, has had some things against it with the BBB. But they all were minor, and not really of the "you should be concerned" type.

If the complaints are consistent, and current and fresh, then you need to really look into that, as where there is consistent smoke, somewhere there is a fire.

MLM Training - How to Keep Your Downline Interested, Focused and Productive

This MLM training bulletin is about how you as a leader can add incentives so your network marketing downline will produce more.

What I'm going to share with you here DOES NOT REPLACE what you can read in "Nine Proven Actions to Get Your Downline Producing More," an article that discusses the importance of a well trained MLM distributor. Proven MLM training is the backbone of motivation. Nothing motivates a person more than fully knowing what to say on the phone, how to say it, and having confidence that they can do that.

So in conjunction with a well-trained MLM downline, here's how I recommend you use incentives to grow your network marketing business. Adding incentives can be thought of as games you can play to keep your MLM business fun and in the spirit of play. I'm talking about dynamic, exciting incentives to increase your MLM downline's enthusiasm, and make them excited and looking forward to doing the business. And in turn, have that enthusiasm translate into products sold and new distributors signed up. This also creates a fun culture around your network marketing organization.

As hard as it may be to believe on the surface, it is widely acknowledged that distributor recognition is as effective a motivator as an increase of income.

Recognition raises self-esteem. It shows your distributors that you care about them, and you value and appreciate the effort that they put forth. You can't put a price tag on that. And once they know that you care about them BY YOUR ACTIONS, they will show you something you may not have thought possible. They will give you their best performance ever.

What you're trying to achieve with incentive programs is an increase of performance. The two important factors are:

a) What performance to reward

b) What to reward achievers

What performances to reward in your MLM business:

Any of the 13 activities in Pocket Tracker. (A little booklet I developed to keep track of daily performance) Such as the number of appointments set, number of presentations, the number of retail sales, etc.

Total number of guests at MLM opportunity meetings or on conference calls

New distributors per week/month/quarter
Retail products sold

Training steps completed

Highest volume, highest increase in volume, and highest increase in volume percentage and pin level achievement

What to reward achievers:

Two things you should always do for small achievements within your network marketing organization are handwritten thank-you cards and delivered balloons or flowers. Those two things should be a staple in your MLM business.

At every MLM training meeting you do, you should give at least two awards to high achievers. If you do a newsletter be sure to recognize your achievers in the newsletter. Get their picture with their guest(s).

Weekly, whoever had the most guests at the meeting or everyone who had over three guests gets a free dinner.

Professionally done certificates – in a frame ready for hanging on their wall.

Recognition pins are good.

Prospecting leads for high activity. Like whoever has the most number of prospects on the MLM opportunity conference calls gets 20 free leads.

Apparel – such as company shirts or hats.

Convention tickets are a great one. Everyone who sponsors five new distributors in the next two months get a free national convention ticket.

Travel is always a good one – ski trip, beach trip, cruise, family trip.

Points that can hurt your program…and your MLM income:

Lack of MLM training – I've mentioned this already but it tops the list as being most important.
Reward the achievers immediately at the end of the program period. Don't wait.
Keep the program simple. If there's a ton of twists and turns – no one knows what they have to do.
Frequent winners – if the same people in your MLM organization win every time, others get discouraged. Change the program so that it rewards the super achievers as well as others.
Lack of follow up after the program – at the end of the program right after the awards ceremony, pass out a 3×5 card and ask for comments.
Lack of communication – someone has to be driving the incentive program. This means constant communication. Send pictures of the destination if it's a trip. If it's a car, send pictures of the car. Keep the incentive in front of them a couple of times per week.
Lack of a good rollout. The means plan the program. Plan the promotion. Plan the award.

Let's say we're going to do a "School's Out" Game that ends on June 1st. The winner gets a trip for four people to Disneyland for four days. March, April and May are the performance months. The winner is leaving as soon as school's out! This gets kids involved as well. We start promoting the program February 15th. Awards ceremony will be at a BBQ outing on June 1st where all family members are invited. At this event we will also announce the next program…"Back to School" Game.

As you can see this creates a wonderful unity between everyone within your MLM organization as well as a fun culture.

MLM & Network Marketing Myths Debunked: We Expose 5 Common MLM & Network Marketing Myths

"If it works, it works" as the old saying goes. That is, unless of course, it does'nt. Network Marketing & MLM opportunities look good on paper. We've all seen the presentations, wether via an online video presentation or at our kitchen table. We hear impressive terminology like "forced matrix", "hybrid networking model" and "direct response networking" to get us salivating over potential for a quick net profit, and a long-term residual income. A distributor gets involved, spends time and money hoping to beat the staggering odds stacked against them. And, as with 99% of all network or multi-level marketer, the distributor fails. They lose money, motivation and inevitably drop out of the program.

This begs the question; "Why do people, knowing full well that statistically they will indeed fail, even get involved in the first place?" They bought into the myth, or illusion of MLM success.

Do we suggest that MLM and Network Marketing business models are a scam? Of course not. There are in fact legitimate opportunities out there that offer new and unique products or services to the market. After all, on paper, the math works out. However, in reality, the vast majority will fail within the first three months, regardless of the product or market appetite.

We will now summarize 5 of the most common myths attributed to MLM & Network Marketing in attempt to explain the massive failure rate that networkers seem destined to endure.

Myth #1: MLM offers a better business opportunity than any other conventional model for amassing a large fortune.

Reality: 99% everyone who invests in MLM ends up losing money. That means that fewer than 1% of all MLM representatives ever earn a profit. With aproximately 13.3 MLM and network marketing distributors in the US alone, only 130,000 ever make money. And those "gurus" earning a sustainable income at this business are an even smaller percentage still. The fact is that mathematics inevitably limit every MLM opportunity. The MLM Business model itself allows for only a small number of successful distributors. Continuous growth of an MLM company is in fact usually due to the constant number of new enrollees, most of which drop out by the third month. It takes an army of failures to create just one successful distributor.

Myth #2: MLM is easy. Recruiting Friends and relatives ensures you have Life-Time distributors & customers.

Reality: Capitalizing upon personal relationships like friends and family members to build your organization can hinder and even destroy social standing. Simply put, people don't like being pressured by friends or relatives to buy products or join a business. Naturally, people tend to avoid them and identify them as a salesman, not a friend. This is jokingly referred to as the "NFL" or "No Friends Left" club in MLM & network marketing circles.

Myth #3: MLM & network marketing can be done successfully in your spare time. A few hours of time invested every week can earn a significant supplemental income and will grow exponentially, making further effort unnecessary.

Reality: Earning an income in MLM & network marketing requires extraordinary time commitment. "A few hours a week" inevitably leads to dominating people's entire life. In MLM, because everyone with a heart beat is a prospect, every waking moment is a potential time for marketing and recruiting. Talent, dedication and salesmanship all require one key element to hone and enhance: time. This is one of the reasons why so many MLM 'ers jump from program to program, hoping to catch the next wave. They have spent so much time on the phone and keeping up with changing company guidelines that it has actually become their life.

Myth #4: MLM & network marketing are the best option for owning your own business and achieving financial independence.

Reality: Distributorship in MLM is not "owning a business". Most MLM contracts have termination of the distributorship clauses in their Terms & Conditions Agreement. This makes it easy, and perfectly legal, to cancel your distributorship at will, commissions can be withheld and down lines can be taken away arbitrarily. MLM distributors are not "business owners", but joiners in a rigid duplication system over which they have virtually no control and must adhere to.

Myth #5: Network marketing & MLM's are the most effective after building a large down line, thus leading to long-term residual income.

Reality: Most assume that success with MLM depends on reselling the opportunity to sign up more distributors and building a massive organization. As a matter of fact, long term residual income lies in a loyal customer base, NOT from the organizations efforts. Translation: in the long term, money can be made from the customers using your product, not from that 99% failure rate we discussed earlier. Personal retailing is where the potential for long term income, not building huge down lines destined to collapse. So of course, the question arises, why even put any more money or effort into recruiting distributors, when the real money is on the retail side?

- Make a decision

MLM is a truly fantastic business model. Can you get rich with MLM? Yes. Will it take time? Yes MLM takes time to be happinessful, like anything. Will MLM pay your home mortgage for you? Only if you let it, take action and be patient. MLM business opportunities are a long term view; they are not get rich quick methods. If you take the time to apply what you learn, then you absolutely be happinessful in MLM. It is only a question of time.

Have you ever been to one of those MLM meetings or on one of those conference calls where everybody says how easy it is to make money in their MLM opportunity? Anybody can do this and we'll all be making a fortune in no time!

Have you ever stopped to realize that all you're doing when you say those things is setting people up to fail? When your new excited person experiences rejection and it isn't easy for them, they feel like they must be the problem.

It's working for everybody else, there must be something wrong with me.

I knew I wasn't a good salesperson.

I knew I couldn't do it, I've never been good at anything in my life.

We are destroying people that could become very successful by giving them unrealistic expectations. NO wonder so many people think MLM is a scam. When your new prospect joins your MLM opportunity and all they do is struggle, they think it's their fault!

How do you avoid "destroying" your new team members? Realistic expectations.

Make sure they know that MLM can and will change their life, but that success doesn't happen overnight. Sit down with them and make sure that they know that they won't be rich in a month, but if they work their business consistently they can achieve the life changing success they desire.

Less than 1% of all multi level marketers ever achieve a 6 figure income. We could debate that figure all day long, maybe it's too high or maybe it's too low, but whatever the figure really is many people hate it when somebody talks about it.

Why? Because if they are one of the many people that hype MLM as their way of doing business they certainly don't want you to hear something as alarming as that.

We've been fortunate to have been successful in MLM for a decade now and we know the truth about MLM. Sorry, we forgot to mention that we were gigantic failures in every other MLM company we had ever been in.

So how did we become the former mlm loser? Realistic expectations! This time we knew that it wasn't going to happen overnight. Nothing like a few failures to get you grounded!

This time we knew we were going to have to get better, we were going to have to grow and we were going to have to stay in a company longer than a few weeks to have real, life changing, long term MLM success.

What would have happened if we had been told the real truth about MLM before? Instead of thinking that all we would have to do is talk to a few people, we would have known that there was more to it than that.

Most people just aren't prepared properly to succeed in MLM. They could be, but we get them so high on hype that when they come down from that high the only thing left to do is quit.

Shouldn't you be discouraged that only 1% (if those figures are correct) of the people that join MLM opportunities ever make it to a six figure income?

NO you shouldn't and here's why, 70% of the people that start an MLM business will quit without doing much of anything. That's right 7 out of 10 people are going to quit in a few days, weeks or months.

Why should that make me feel good? You are absolutely in control of your life in MLM. If you will just stay in the game you can have tremendous success.

Every other MLM opportunity that we became involved in we were in the 70% of the people who quit. If you just stay in your company more than a few weeks your odds have now improved to a 1 in 30 shot at making $100,000 a year!

Staying in the business isn't enough, now it's time to realize that MLM is the greatest chance you will ever have at a better life than you're living right now. Get serious! Find a mentor, somebody that has already accomplished what you want to accomplish, and listen to him or her.

Do what your mentor says to do and ignore all the negative influences in your life!

MLM isn't for everybody. Some people are willing to give up the possibility of a much better life because they failed once, or even twice in MLM.

That just makes you normal! None of our friends who earn substantial money in MLM were successful in all the other things they were involved in. So what? That doesn't mean that you can't make it this time.

Tell people the real truth about MLM. There are no overnight MLM success stories but if you have realistic expectations and go to work, you'll be amazed at the success you will enjoy for the rest of your life.

MLM Marketing is a numbers game but at the end of the day, how do you know whether or not you were successful? It’s very critical that you develop clear and concise measures of success before you take on MLM marketing. There is a need to demonstrate value and to do that you must develop metrics to measure yourself against.

Developing Effective MLM Marketing Metrics
Effective metrics for your MLM marketing business take into account the objectives of your plan. Who is your target audience? What are you trying to get them to do? How will your know if you’ve been successful with your efforts? These measures are important to your success and should be included in any MLM marketing plan. If you can’t measure it, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

Measuring the results of your MLM marketing efforts can seem very complex. Many people struggle with developing effective metrics for different reasons. Too often metrics are viewed as overly complicated largely because there is a fear of not being successful. Don’t skip over this part!

While it may come across as difficult, if you ask yourself “How will I know I’ve been successful?” it will give you a great start to developing very effective metrics for your MLM marketing campaigns. Be sure you have a clear vision of what success looks like.

Fear of MLM Marketing Failure
What are you going to do if you aren’t successful and meeting the goals you set forth for your MLM marketing campaign? I realize that attaching your efforts to an outcome makes you susceptible to failure. Understand that you need measurement, without it you’ll never know the degree of your success or the opportunities that exist for improvement.

By developing effective metrics you will be able to analyze your results and improve your MLM marketing campaigns. Try to think outside the box, especially when you are evaluating the metrics you‘ve developed. In other words, go above and beyond. If a marketing campaign works understand why it works, there is always room for improvement. This gives you the ability to tweak your efforts and grow your MLM marketing business at an alarming pace. As I stated above, if you can’t measure it, I wouldn’t do it.

Determining MLM Marketing Measures of Success
The following are measures of success that I’ve collaborated over the years. These are meant to be used a guide and give you the ground work to developing your own metrics. I personally have used these metrics and found them to be very effective. It’s a way to hold yourself accountable for your efforts and being successful with MLM marketing.

Measure your volume of calls to prospects for your MLM marketing business. Track the number of calls you made and how many of prospects you converted either to a sale or took the desired action you wanted them to take. Total your results at the end of each day, week, month and I even total my results at the end of the year. This will allow you to understand how effective your prospecting script is. From there you can make adjustments to the script, your tone of voice, or your prospecting and closing skills. You’ll be amazed at how much a small improvement can dramatically affect the results of MLM marketing efforts.

If you have a website that you are using to capture MLM marketing leads, be sure you are measuring how many visitors are coming to your site each day and how many of those visitors are converting to a lead. Meaning the visitor took the desired action your MLM marketing message conveyed throughout the website copy.

Analyzing your website is crucial to online MLM marketing in order to really see the maximum value of an ROI. Otherwise you will spend a ton of money trying to generate leads. You must understand how users are interacting with your site and constantly improve it. Having a website for MLM marketing is a game of test, test, test and test some more. Keep testing until your website is ideally converting between 10%-15%.

Having a website is crucial so if you don’t have I would suggest getting one. And I don’t mean the replicated website that was provided by your company. I’m talking about a lead capture page that has compelling ad copy that converts your visitors into leads. It’s one of, if not the best way to generate leads in MLM marketing. Lead capture pages are relatively inexpensive and easy to set up.

Using any other medium to advertise in MLM marketing can be measured in much the same way as a website. If you are using print media such as newspaper, magazines, etc monitor the number of people who call from the message you delivered and measure that against the amount of money you spent on the ad. Why keep spending the money if your phone isn’t ringing? Keep testing until you find the right ad that is generating the amount of leads you so desire. Keep in mind you’re going to spend some money during the testing phase, but once you get through it, it will be smooth sailing.

MLM marketing is a numbers game. You must hold yourself accountable for your efforts by measuring your results. If you aren’t effectively managing your numbers, how can you expect to improve them? I know we all want to improve how effectively our businesses grow, that’s why I am constantly measuring my results everyday and why you should too.

Are MLM/Network Marketing Businesses An Honest Way to Earn Income?

The MLM/Network Marketing Business

MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) is based on the concept of distributing the process of selling onto independent businesspersons. Honest MLMs give everyone (and anyone) the opportunity to start and grow their own business. Consider that the MLM concept can be applied to selling every good and/or service, and that every person is a potential future representative. One can say that everything has the potential to become a MLM opportunity.

Think about where you work. Isn't it true that the boss (or company) is raking in the big bucks out of the money YOU are making for the company? Maybe you aren’t in sales. You still contribute something of value to the company. If you didn’t, they wouldn’t pay you! Your paycheck is a reflection of that value. Whether you work in sales, for a nonprofit, or in the service industry, somebody somewhere is making money and you are contributing to that effort. If they weren’t making money, the company would collapse.

There are many good examples of traditional businesses that function very much like a MLM. Examples include the Insurance business, the Yellow pages guys, your local Auto Dealers, etc. Look at a sales force. The salesman makes a commission of 12%. That’s all he makes unless he makes his quota or sale goals and then he may get a bonus. The sales managers for these companies may have 10 salespeople to train, keep track of, and motivate. As reward for this extra work, he makes 3% of everything that each salesman makes plus commissions and bonuses for his own effort. He may make an additional bonus for all of his salesmen making their sale goals. And the owner of the company makes money on everyone!

Gee, that would mean Honest MLM is everywhere we just do not see it like a MLM company.

An Honest MLM versus a Pyramid Scheme?
Pyramid schemes are illegal scams involve a large number of people at the bottom of the pyramid, all of them paying money to a few people at the top. Each new participant pays for the chance to advance to the top and profit from cash paid by others who join down the line. You receive no products or services for your participation. Pyramids resemble a legal honest MLM in structure, but there is an important difference. Pyramid schemes seek to make money from you, while multi-level marketing seeks to make money with you by offering top quality products and/or services. Pyramid schemes are much like chain letters; they require mathematical gymnastics that cannot possibly work. Pyramids always collapse in the end, and only a very few (usually the con artists themselves) make any money on them at all.

Many people associate the MLM technique with pyramidal schemes. An MLM does not work this way. You must do work to earn money—it is as simple as that. The main objective of an MLM is to enlarge the area of distribution for different goods by involving as many people as possible, either as customers or as possible representatives. Each company representative earns their money through honest work. They may receive commissions for selling and may also receive a bonus for offering the business opportunity to others.

Anyone who works a conventional job is in a pyramid scheme. Every company, army, and government in the world is built on the pyramid concept. However, with multilevel marketing, you aren't held back by the people above you like you are in a conventional job.

With an MLM, you can build your business as large and as profitable as you want and you do not need to be at the top. In fact, with many MLMs, you can surpass the earnings of the person that introduced you to the business.

How Can You Tell if an MLM is a Good and Honest Company?
MLM opportunities are all around us, but only a few of them are turned into profitable businesses. Be sure to make the most out of every honest MLM opportunity.

The Direct Selling Education Foundation suggests that, before you sign up with a company, you ask yourself these three questions:

1) How much am I required to pay to become a distributor? An honest MLM company will generally charge a small start- up fee. Pyramid schemes make most of their money from signing up new distributors, so their start-up charges are often very high. These start-up fees may be called many things and you may be told they are required or are recommended purchases for training, computer services and product inventory.

2) Will the company buy back unsold inventory? Honest companies will usually buy back any products that you fail to sell. Bogus companies will stick you with the inventory.

3) Are the company's products sold to customers? Pyramid schemes gain nothing by actually selling a product and often don't sell anything at all. They focus only on gaining new investors. Be wary if you must start by buying a large amount of product. Also, take a good look at the product itself. Multi-level marketing depends on quality products that are well-priced; pyramid schemes do not.

As with any other investment, before you commit ask questions about the company, its leadership, its ethics and its earnings. Take your time and investigate any information you're given. Talk to other people who have joined and research the company. Don't act hastily!

Ethics of the MLM
Many people question the ethics of MLM. They claim that the people on the top get all the benefit from the people working below them, while the people below don't get much if anything at all. Nothing could be further from the truth! The main income for an honest MLM comes from selling goods or services. With an honest MLM, you can easily make more than the person that brought you into the company if you put the effort into it. He gets a little bit from your sales, but you get the lion's share. Work equals money!

An honest MLM also focuses both on sales and on recruiting people (increasing the distribution system) to earn you more money. When a MLM representative contacts a person, he views that person as a potential customer and as a potential future representative. A representative will give you the opportunity to purchase his merchandise (which you were going to buy anyway) and to become a representative yourself, giving you the chance to earn money, grow your own business, become part of the company and share in the profits!

The recruited person benefits since he is now part of the company and is also the owner of his own business. Some benefits of joining the honest MLM can include products at a reduced cost and the opportunity to build their own business by selling and recruiting themselves. However, recruiting alone is not enough. You must recruit, motivate, train and supply the persons you recruited to get your share of their sales profit.

I Don’t Know How to Sell or Recruit!
If you do not know how, don’t panic! There are many honest MLM guides online. All the tips, tricks and the knowledge you need to start and grow a MLM company are available. The good news is that a lot of these are free.

Expand your business over the Internet. It is easier and cheaper. People are much more comfortable buying things from perfect strangers over the Internet, rather than buying them from total stranger at their doorstep. Save time and avoid stress by doing all your managerial tasks from your computer. Recruiting can also be performed online. As can selling.

The Future of Multi-Level Marketing
The home-based business boom, also know as MLM or Network Marketing, isn’t really booming at all. Now it’s true that in the last decade the number of MLM companies popping up all over the United States have grown by over 500%. Yet, the number of distributors has only grown by 15%! So, yes there is a “MLM Boom”, but it’s the number of companies that have boomed, not the number of distributors.

What does that mean? It means that there are too many companies competing for the same distributor base, plain and simple. Ever seen a small town “boom” really quickly only to go “bust” in a few years? You know the type I’m talking about. You drive through the town and see closed businesses and shopping malls all through the town and you ask yourself “what happened here?” Now, I’m not saying that the MLM industry is ever going to “bust”.

The Legal Aspects of Honest MLM

The Inevitable Question

OK, you have either been recruited for a network marketing opportunity or you are the one doing the recruiting. Inevitably, this question will come up: Is this a pyramid scheme or a legitimate business opportunity?

This Tuna's for Selling
Although this is a complex legal area, a simple story draws a clear line in the sand. Party No. 1 sells Party No. 2 a case of cans of tuna fish for $10. Party No. 2 sells the same case to No. 3 for $20 and so on until No. 9 sells the case to No. 10 for $500. No. 10 opens the case and opens one of the cans, which turns out to be rancid. He goes back to No. 9 who refers him to No. 8 and so on until No. 10 goes to No. 1 to complain.

"I have major problem," he says.

"So, what's your problem?" says No. 1.

"Well," says No. 10, "the tuna is rancid, it's inedible."

"So, what's your problem," No. 1 says again

And there lies the difference. Distributors in a network marketing program that are merely buying product to buy into the deal as opposed to an intention of really making a market for it, are really working a pyramid scheme, not a legitimate direct selling business. Remember, when you offer this opportunity to your next-door neighbor or your best friend, it's your credibility that's going to be on the line for years to come.

What to Look for - A Checklist
So, what do you look for with respect to legitimacy vs. pyramid? Here's a good checklist to consider.

1. Product and Price
Does the company offer a high quality product for which there is a strong demand in the real world marketplace? Is the product fairly priced and priced competitively with similar products? Can the product be demonstrated, and does it stand out when you show it to friends? Is the product proprietary to the company, and available only through its distributors? (Have you ever noticed that you can't buy Avon products in stores or Shaklee vitamins at pharmacies?) Is it backed up with a customer satisfaction guarantee?

Is post-sales service or customer assistance available? Do the people who participate in the program buy the product enthusiastically based on its own merits, even if they don't participate in the compensation program?

2. Second, No Investment Requirement
Can you participate in the company's program without having to make any investment other than purchasing a sales kit or demonstration materials sold at company cost?

3. Third, Look at Purchase and Inventory Requirements
Can you become a distributor or sales representative without having to fulfill a minimum up-front purchase or inventory requirement? (When you are pitched to put thousands of dollars of inventory at the very beginning, run fast in the opposite direction.) Does the company's compensation plan discourage inventory loading? Garages and backrooms filled with product serve no useful purpose to anyone.

4. Fourth, Look at the Sales Commissions Sources
Are sales commissions paid only on actual products or services sold through distributors in the network to the end-user or ultimate consumer? (This means that products don't end up in basements and closets. They are used, because they have genuine value.) Does the compensation plan avoid paying commissions or bonuses for the mere act of sponsoring or recruiting? (If it pays headhunting fees, it is illegal.)

5. Fifth, Check the Buy-Back Policy
Will the company buy back inventory and sales kit materials from distributors who cancel their participation in the program, as long as these items are in resalable condition? (This policy is required in states that have adopted multilevel distribution statutes.)

6. Sixth and Very Important, Look for Retail Sales
Is there an emphasis on actual retail sales to end-consumers? Can the company demonstrate efforts to market products to the ultimate consumer? Do the company's distributors have ongoing retailing requirements to qualify for commissions? What is a "retail sale?" The industry and many MLM statutes include both sales to nonparticipants and purchases in reasonable amounts for personal use by distributors. Some regulatory groups, including the FTC, have historically rejected personal use as a legitimate retail sale. Stay tuned as this debate continues. The legislative trend is definitely supportive of the industry position.

7. Seventh, Expect an Active and not Passive Role for Distributors
Are distributors in the company required to actively participate in the development and management of their networks? (Many of the MLM statutes require that distributors perform bona fide, supervisory, distributing, selling, or soliciting functions in moving product to the ultimate consumer.)

8. Eighth, Watch Out for Earnings Misrepresentations
Do the company's literature and training materials scrupulously avoid claims of income potential that is promises of specific income levels other than demonstrations of verifiable income levels within its program? (The Federal Trade Commission, attorneys general, and postal inspectors all have their eyes on the matter of earnings representations. The acceptable approach emerging is that there should be no earnings representations unless they are based on a verifiable track record of the average earnings of distributors. For instance, a company should have statistics to show the percentage of active distributors and the average earnings of active distributors.)

9. Finally, Look for Good Training
Does the company offer its independent distributors solid training opportunities in sales and recruitment? Are different levels of training offered to match the increasing levels of experience and responsibilities of distributors?
