Spring Forward: The ABC's Of Fashion For The Season

2011-05-14T21:59:00.000-07:00

Right off the runways of New York City, London, Milan, and Paris, we bring you the season’s biggest trends—from Asian-inspired tailoring to translucent layering, this is what you’ll be wearing this spring.

Asian Inspired:

Designers from Carolina Herrera to Haider Ackermann looked to the Far East for inspiration this season—get the look by incorporating Chinese, Japanese, and Korean detailing, like tassels, obi belts, floral embroidery, into your spring wardrobe.

When choosing your own Asian-inspired pieces, take a cue from Louis Vuitton and John Galliano, who both opted to use floral embroidered satins, frog closures, and traditional Chinese silhouettes.

In true eco-friendly style, we’re looking into alternate energy sources to keep us cool this summer, and these little floral-printed fans just might be the prettiest option around and tuck easily into any bag for those hot subway slogs.
Bamboo-framed fans, $2 each, get them at Pearlriver.com

Color Blocking: Spring’s minimal trends make use of maximum color—pile on vivid, color blocked hues with simple shapes and high-impact accessories to make your spring wardrobe pop.
The first looks down the SS11 runway of New York–by–way–of–Nepal designer Prabal Gurung said it all: Color is key. Gurung showcased a series of light, color-blocked knits and silks that scream chic and spring in a single breath. Given his lack of fear with regard to color palette and expert understanding of fit, it’s no wonder why oft-photographed faces—from Demi Moore to Michelle Obama—have called Gurung a favorite again and again.

Electric: Raf Simons’ SS11 collection for Jil Sander was in a word fearless. As a direct reaction to FW10’s minimalism-heavy runways, Simons instead embraced what he calls maximalism as his central theme this season. Translation: There was no shortage of sweeping, full skirts, sumptuous silks, and cheerful colors so bold they should come equipped with a warning label.

What with constantly being chained to our smartphones, iPads, and laptops, it’s not exactly like anyone needs a watch these days. But this is all the more reason to invest in a version of the classic accessory that’s a bit more off the beaten path. Whether you’re looking for wrist-candy or a cool time-telling machine, this color-block watch is for you.

Heels and Platforms: It’s all about the flat form for spring, and the Vena Cava girls have joined forces with killer L.A. accessories emporium Ten Over Six on a pair of wood-and-leather stunners that will give you a geishalike stride without the multiyear apprenticeship.

Charlotte Olympia Dellal has, in just a few seasons, become synonymous with skyscraper heels. The London-based It girl’s namesake line is loaded with sleek platforms that defy gravity. Take this color-blocked satin pair, for instance. Totally traffic-stopping and just the kind of heel we imagine Jessica Rabbit might sport.

The oversized tortoise frames lend mystery, while the cheeky gold tassels add on-trend Asian flair.

Wild Thing.....You Make My Heart Sing.....

Animal prints have long been a popular style for many reasons. For one, they are generally expensive and considered rather exotic however if you are looking to stand out this season you can snag signature pieces at sweatshop prices at stores like Marshall's and Target. But if you prefer something a bit more showy, you can visit shops like Nosdstrom, Bloomingdale's or even Top Shop and H&M on the cheap.....
