Over the past few years, mobile web usage has considerably increased to the point that web developers and designers can no longer afford to ignore it. In wealthy countries, the shift is being fueled by faster mobile broadband connections and cheaper data service. However, a large increase has also been seen in developing nations where people have skipped over buying PCs and gone straight to mobile.

Unfortunately, the mobile arena introduces a layer of complexity that can be difficult for developers to accommodate. Mobile development is more than cross-browser, it should be cross-platform. The vast number of mobile devices makes thorough testing a practical impossibility, leaving developers nostalgic for the days when they only had to support legacy browsers.

The year 2000 may have seen the dot-com bubble reach the limits of its inflation, but at that point the Internet marketing industry was really only getting started. Rapid increases in personal computing accessibility and the unstoppable growth of search have, among other things, facilitated a very buoyant market in online promotion via SEO – search engine optimization – and related services.

Mobile internet usage is set to overtake desktop Internet usage by 2014, and what’s more, the way people use their mobile devices to browse is very different. This represents a colossal threat and concurrent opportunity for Internet marketers, and it is only those that can truly appreciate how the Internet will be consumed via these various new mobile devices that will prosper. Here are just some of the ways Internet (and search) usage is likely to change.

Today we’re seeing increased sales in smartphones and tablets, faster mobile data connections, apps, and more. Basically, we’re accessing Internet services more and more from something that is not a PC.

We’ve put together some numbers to attempt to show a picture of what the mobile web was like so far in 2011, how it is has developed, and perhaps take a peek into the future as well.

With the number of smartphone users rapidly rising, we’re seeing more and more websites providing content specifically designed to be browsed on smartphones. Today we are happy to announce that Googlebot-Mobile now crawls with a smartphone user-agent in addition to its previous feature phone user-agents. This is to increase our coverage of smartphone content and to provide a better search experience for smartphone users.

The content crawled by smartphone Googlebot-Mobile will be used primarily to improve the user experience on mobile search. For example, the new crawler may discover content specifically optimized to be browsed on smartphones as well as smartphone-specific redirects.

Industry experts agree that the mobile Web will be the breakout mobile channel in 2012.

“I believe that the mobile Web will be the breakout mobile channel in 2012,” Ms. Troutman said. “Businesses are realizing that apps are for their dedicated customers and need to be more personal than just having an app that does the same functions as the mobile Web.

“The abilities through the mobile Web are amazing, and can capture, in most cases, 85 percent or more of what an app can accomplish,” she said. “For instance, we can deliver augmented reality on the mobile Web.

We talk about "the web" and "the mobile web" as if the two are different, but they aren't. I'm the first to admit that I'm as guilty of doing this as the next person. Using these terms is helpful for discussing differences in how people browse via different devices, but at the end of the day, it's all one web. Users want the same breadth and depth of content, no matter what device they're using. They want a consistent, reliable user experience. They don't want to interact with your site one way at their desks, then learn a whole new way when they're tablet-surfing on the couch, and then learn a third way when they're roaming around with their phones. Site owners who can deliver an experience that feels the same, regardless of the platform, are the ones who are going to own the web of the not-too-distant future.

It seems as though the Mobile space is beginning to repeat what we have seen from the ongoing desktop browser wars.

When IE6 was king, it had over 75% of market share. With IE5.5 combined, it was 95%.

What an amazing time it was to make websites: You could create and test a website with one web browser without feeling like your web development responsibilities were being shirked. You could be confident that 95% of Internet users would see the same thing.

That bubble burst when people began adopting other browsers, and eventually we got to where we are today.

Under the glassy surface of the mobile application world, there's the heaving and grinding of tectonic plates. They're shifting, buffeted by powerful currents deep in the hot, fluid core of the mobile business. These currents are due to the interminable internal politics of handset manufacturers, network operators, content providers, and increasingly the developers of phone applications.

History has not been kind to the mobile application space. WAP 1.x in 2001 was cwap, and was rejected by the market. With WAP 2.x, many developers of WAP sites tried foolishly to replicate their Web sites, rather than seeing it as a new way for people to access “just the right information” quickly when on the move. It shouldn't have been such a failure – the Japanese equivalent, imode, has been pretty successful.

Periodically, someone somewhere for whatever reason declares the death of the mobile Web. This is welcome because it allows us all to review what the mobile Internet really is and why it is critical.
Mobile Web isn’t just about having a mobile Website – though that is an important part – it’s about recognising that mobile is different. Mobile users have different requirements to PC users and mobile devices have different limitations and capabilities compared with PCs.

Does your company need mobile Web? Here are four simple questions to help you decide:

It's hard to imagine Apple's App store -- 50 million users, 400,000 apps, 10 billion downloads -- being threatened with extinction, but it's not as if Tyrannosaurus Rex had a clue its demise was imminent until the process was well underway, either. We know that empires crumble: what's interesting is how.

Right now pundits are focused on the threat of Android. Apple is still shipping plenty of iPhones, but even Steve Jobs must recognize that if his were a Roman empire, the numberless device manufacturers selling Android devices are the metaphorical barbarians at the gates. Android's not the issue, however -- in fact, Android is just another lumbering dinosaur.

The real threat are web apps.

One of the most common problems for webmasters who run both mobile and desktop versions of a site is that the mobile version of the site appears for users on a desktop computer, or that the desktop version of the site appears when someone finds them from a mobile device. In dealing with this scenario, here are two viable options:

Web Browsers

businessinsider.com

The debate between the Web vs. Apps, between HTML5 vs. Native applications, has long been marked by half-truths, spin, and misinformation. This week the supposed conflict took another false turn. The app analytics company Flurry put out a press release that alleges that “Mobile Apps [have] Put the Web in Their Rear-view Mirror.” This Flurry report is getting a lot of play around the blogosphere. So we decided to look more closely. And it turns out the Flurry methodology here is quite dubious. Flurry compared ComScore panel data which represents the USA population overall (a population that includes the 60% of Americans who do not yet have a smartphone at all) to the users in their own Flurry data set. All of whom by definition use apps, or Flurry can't see them.

High consumer expectations for the mobile web aren’t yet being met, with 71 percent expecting sites to load on smartphones just as fast as they load on desktop computers. This adds a challenge for companies trying to build a mobile presence, as 43 percent of smartphone users won’t return to a site if it loads too slowly on the handset. Mobile websites are gaining functionality and therefore complexity, which can both tax the processing power of a smartphone while also loading slowly on 3G networks that looked speedy just a few years ago.
