Soehl’s Make Their Mark on Lancers Softball

In her two years at Mount Marty College, Amanda Soehl has been a fixture in the outfield for Lancer Softball Coach Albert Fernandez. But she isn’t the only Soehl who has made a name as a Lancer.

Soehl, a sophomore from Sioux Falls O’Gorman High School, is just one member of her family who wore the Lancer navy and gold.

Alison Bailey played four years with the softball team under three different coaches. However, since she graduated the softball program has been a little more stable as Fernandez has remained with the team.

Part of this can be attributed to the Amanda’s father Curt Soehl who is an assistant coach with the team.

Soehl drives from his home in Sioux Falls to Riverside Park to help conduct practices and be in the dugout for games.

Amanda reveres her father for his dedication and positive thinking.

“He loves the game and wants our team to succeed because he knows our capabilities. He truly enjoys being a part of it.”

Among the things that Curt offers to the team is an optimistic outlook.

“He chooses to focus mainly on the positives of each game or practice, as well as what we can do to make ourselves better. He brings different perspectives to situations.”

Softball has been a part of the Soehl family since Amanda can remember. Soehl coached his daughters and his son since they were old enough to hold a bat.

With that in mind as well as the necessity for the correct atmosphere, Amanda and her father have established a different sort of relationship on the diamond.

“Our relationship on the field and on practice is a more serious, get down to business relationship. He is my coach and not my dad when we are on the field.”

Now that the season is under way, the Soehl family will use every ounce of energy to enable success for the Lancers.

Amanda has started nine games in center field and has been one of the Lancers most solid defenders. She hopes to continue her contributions throughout the season.

Lancer Baseball Starting on Top

Coach Andy Bernatow and the MMC baseball team couldn’t have asked for a better start to their 2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference season.

The Lancers swept through both Dana College (2-1, 7-3) and Concordia University (13-10, 8-6) this past weekend.

It wasn’t easy for the Lancers who came from behind in 3-of-4 games to secure victory.

This started in the nightcap of the Dana game where the Lancers trailed the Vikings 3-1 going into the fifth inning. Junior 1B/P Trey Krier lined a bases loaded double to the right-center gap.

The Lancers came from behind twice against a solid hitting Concordia team. This began in the first game where they found themselves down 9-3. They started down 5-2 in he nightcap.

Thanks to their solid weekend the Lancers (14-10, 4-0) sit atop the GPAC in a first place tie with the University of Sioux Falls and Hastings College.

The quick start is a welcome change for the Lancers who began conference play 0-4 last year.

To maintain their high standing, the Lancers must have another solid weekend. Luckily, they host double-headers against Nebraska Wesleyan University and Doane College.

Both NWU and Doane come into the weekend going 3-1 last weekend.

Powell, Lancers Shoot into MMC Record Book

Coach Schlimgen watched contently as his team nailed shot after shot on Saturday afternoon as the Lancers defeated Doane College 88-79.

Coach Schlimgen knew that his Lancer team was capable of shooting the ball well, but he never could have predicted the outcome of Saturday’s game as the Lancers defeated Doane College 88-79 and set two MMC three-point shooting records.

His team knocked-down a total of 10 three-pointers on the night, seven of which junior guard Lacey Powell made. Powell set an individual MMC three-point shooting record with the performance.

“We did shoot the ball well versus Doane and especially Lacey,” Schlimgen said.

Powell, who finished with 24 points in the game, plummeted ahead of Erin Case (2004-05), Kelly DeJong (three times, 1997-98) and Audra Tramp (1995-96) who all had made six three-point shots in a game.

Powell has been known as a three-point specialist, but no one expected her to have a career defining game, especially on the road shooting towards unfamiliar hoops.

Her hot hand couldn’t have came at a better time for her team. Headed into the GPAC tournament, it is safe to say that Powell is happier she helped the team to a win.

“The record is special for Lacey, but she will tell you that it is more important that she helped the team win.”

MMC community saddened by great loss...

The Mount Marty community recently suffered a great loss in the passing of Father Jack Garvey. Although the timing of this sad event did not allow for a proper memorial in the issue of The Moderator just released, please be assured that we are planning something special for the March issue.

Father John “Jack” Garvey died on February 4, 2009 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD. Father Jack served as chaplain at Mount Marty College and Sacred Heart Monastery for 6 years. At the time of his death, Father Garvey was serving as chaplain for the Monastery.

A scripture service was held on Friday, February 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel on the campus. His funeral service was held on Saturday, February 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Bishop Paul Swain, Bishop of the Sioux Falls diocese, as the Presider.

Father Jack felt strongly about the many injustices people suffered not only in our country but all over the world. He did not hesitate to speak out about them and we can thank him for his homilies that were both challenging and thought provoking.

Chatting With The Coaches: Marsden Scores 1000th Point

Scoring her 1000th collegiate point went by quietly for Amber Marsden. It wasn’t until after her and her teammates earned a 86-54 victory against Briar Cliff University that Marsden recognized her accomplishment.

“I knew I was getting close, but I had only told one person on the team,” Marsden said. “I was more worried about winning rather than scoring.”

Marsden came into the Briar Cliff game with 986 career points, 413 of which came at Benedictine College in Atchison, Ks. She scored 19 points in the game to plummet her over the 1000 point mark.

“Scoring your 1000th point is something I think that every college basketball player wants to accomplish,” Marsden said.

According to Marsden the point milestone is evidence of hard work and playing on a strong team.

“It all comes from the hard work that we as a team put together on game days that really makes the accomplishment even better.”

Marsden’s physical post play has contributed to make the team stronger throughout the year. Lancer coach Tom Schlimgen explained Marsden’s contribution down low.

“Amber has a lot of athletic ability; she raises the bar for us with her ability to score. We need her to be a threat for us on the inside and her quickness as a post player is a positive asset for her.”

After reaching the milestone Marsden added a 13 point performance in an 84-45 victory against Nebraska Wesleyan University.

It’s clear for the Lancers that Marsden will play a determining how the Lancers finish their season. However, she is not the only player who will reach the 1000 point mark for the Lancers this season. Junior guard Michelle Amundson is only 14 points away from breaking the milestone as well.

MMC Notebook: Lancer Basketball Binds Marquardt Siblings

As far back as she can remember, Dana Marquardt and her brother Chris have always been involved in basketball. Basketball has been a tie that has defined the Marquardt family.

Chris played four years at Dakota Wesleyan University and Dana finishes her playing career with the Lancers at the end of the current basketball season.

“Basketball has always been a huge part of our lives,” Dana said. “Our whole family has always been involved some way with it.”

Perhaps it was only fitting that, in Dana’s senior year, Chris hired on as one of the assistant basketball coaches for MMC. Dana was so used to having Chris around coaching that it helped to relax the playing atmosphere.

“Both Chris and my dad coached me at youth tournaments, so I have already been used to having him as a coach. We have always got along well, I consider Chris as one of my close friends as well as my brother.”

Although they are close, neither Chris nor Dana let that interfere with their professional relationship on the court.

“I respect anything my brother says about basketball. He has so much experience playing and coaching it would be hard not to trust what he has to say.”

With their relationship, the Marquardt siblings add their special blend to a Lancer squad that is by no means short on team chemistry.

As the season reaches its waning moments, nothing can replace the experience that the Marquardt’s have had this year.

“I do love having my brother there everyday but treat him like I would any other coach. I think having Chris as a coach has made him and I closer, which is great.”

Lancers sprinter Brandon Phizacklea is so close to setting a new MMC indoor track record, all he needs to shave is a fraction of a second.

Phizacklea, a native from Colorado Springs, CO, is four one-hundredths of a second away from Clayson Glasgow’s 7.23 which currently stands as the record.

Glasgow set the record in a meet in December 11, 2003. The record’s life has lasted nearly six years without many challengers.

With his current best at 7.26, Phizacklea hopes he can claim the record quickly. His next opportunity will be in Storm Lake, IA this Saturday at the Buena Vista Invitational.

Chatting with the Coaches: Energy High In Baseball Camp

Entering his fifth year as the head baseball coach at Mount Marty, Andy Bernatow doesn’t know if he’s ever seen the energy level as high in the first week of practice.

“I was really impressed,” Bernatow said. “The energy level was up and the team was really focused.”

Practice began last Sunday upon returning from Christmas break and will continue until February 7 when the Lancers travel to the Metrodome to face Vitbero College.

Among numerous techniques, Bernatow tweaked his practice plans to allow his practices to move smoother. Bernatow sends his plans to players before each night of practice, blueprinting his expectations and desired outcomes.

Bernatow believes that practice is an essential tool to the team’s success.

“We have made it a point to e-mail out practice plans to the players. This allows them a better opportunity to be prepared mentally and physically for practice.”

The high energy level makes it easier for practice preparations , a necessity considering that the Lancers face one of their toughest non-conference schedules in recent memory. With 22 non-conference games on the schedule, the Lancers need a jump out of the gates.

After bitter end to last season and a long wait to the new season, Bernatow has hopes for his squad.

“This team has high expectations to go along with tremendous potential,” Bernatow said. “I am very optimistic and excited.”Bernatow’s optimism is evident through the goals he set for his team — one of which is to win a Great Plains Athletic Conference championship.

Chating With the Coachs: Lancers Move to No. 19

After breaking the NAIA Women’s Basketball Division II top 25 last week, the Lancers began this week as the 19th best team in the nation.

After defeating both Dakota Wesleyan University and Midland Lutheran College last week, the Lancers continue moving up.

“Being ranked says a lot about our women’s team,” Lancers coach Tom Schlimgen said. “We’ve played a tough schedule and our mental approach has been very good.”

The Lancers (14-5) currently are tied for the fourth place position in the GPAC with a 5-2 record. They lost only to No. 7 Northwestern University and No. 1 Morningside.

This is impressive considering that the Lancers were picked tenth in the preseason poll at the beginning of the year. However, the Lancers feel as if they still haven’t accomplished much.

“We have some high goals that are still in reach, but we have not got to them yet,” Schlimgen said.

These goals don’t get any easier to achieve as the season progresses. The Lancers travel to Sewerd, Neb. on Saturday to face Concordia University with whom they share fourth place in the GPAC with.

MMC Notebook: Lancers Face Challenging Week
The Women’s basketball team (8-2) couldn’t start Great Plains Athletic conference play any tougher.

The Lancers face the top two ranked teams in NAIA Women’s Basketball, starting with #1 ranked Morningside College (11-0) on Wednesday and the #2 ranked Hastings College (8-1) on Saturday.

“The GPAC is extremely tough, add the fact that we open with the #1 ranked team nationally in our division in Morningside and the # 2 ranked team nationally in Hastings and we obviously could not start out any tougher,” Lancer coach Tom Schlimgen said.

Already battling a number of injuries and illnesses, the Lancers are facing their greatest challenges of the young season.

Having already defeated nationally ranked Black Hills State University (Nov. 10, 60-44) at home, the Lancers aren’t in completely unfamiliar waters. However it has not yet been to this degree.

Coach Schlimgen stressed the importance of playing at home and living up to their high expectations.

“We need to take pride in playing at home,” Schlimgen said. “If we want to be a contender in our conference, then we need to play like contenders.”

Against Morningside, the Lancers face a team that thrives on defensive pressure.

“Morningside is a very unique team. They all about zone defense and zone pressure in full court and half court,” Schlimgen said. “They try to create a lot of turnovers and want the game played fast.”

Their offense feeds off of turnovers. Not only are they strong in the post, but they can shoot well and dribble drive if necessary.

Coach Schlimgen said they are a coach’s nightmare.

Benson’s Transition To Volleyball Paid Off

Coming in as a freshman cross country runner from Hurley, Carly Benson never had any thoughts about playing college volleyball.

“I never had intentions of playing college volleyball,” Benson said. I had considered other sports, but never volleyball.”

That changed at the end of her running season as now senior setter Abby Haiar approached Benson and asked her to talk with Lancer volleyball coach Tracey Grotenhuis.

Benson made the switch in the fall semester of her sophomore year and began playing as the Lancers libero.

Benson entered a young team and helped them to improve throughout her two years on the team.

Benson considered her transition to the volleyball team like joining a new family.

“The girls on and off the court are like family to me and it is awesome to have that kind of support behind you,” Benson said. “I have really enjoyed the team aspect and love the girls I play with.”

Benson had a solid year on the court. She played 128 of 129 games and led the team with 546 digs. She directed the passing to help set up the Lancers offensive attack.

Her performance was good enough to make her an All-GPAC Honerable Mention libero.

Although Benson is only considered a sophomore in volleyball eligibility, she is a junior academically.Next year will be Benson’s last year with the Lancers as she graduates in May 2010.

Matthew Mayer Returns to Mount Marty

Playing Against Coach Meyer

The Lancers men’s basketball team will be in the presence of collegiate basketball greatness on Tuesday.

They travel to Aberdeen to play against Northern State University and their legendary coach Don Meyer.

Meyer is currently second on the NCAA Career Men’s College Basketball Wins list, just behind former coach Bob Knight. Meyer entered the season with 889 wins, behind Knight’s 902 wins.

Playing against Meyer and his NSU team could prove to be a valuable experience for the Lancers.

Not only will they play against one of the most successful coaches in college history, they play against a man who is currently battling some major obstacles.

On his way to an annual hunting trip on September 5th, Meyer was in a traumatic car accident in which he was severely injured.

Meyer was hospitalized with fractured ribs and fractured bones in his lower leg. However, that wasn’t the worst. Meyer was diagnosed with cancer.

While performing emergency surgery, doctors found slow growing carcinoid cancer. Meyer is currently rehabilitating his injuries and the cancer.

Lancers of the Month

Men’s Athletes of the Month:
Dave Mueller and Derek Otton

As freshmen, Mueller, a defender, and Otton, a goalkeeper, earned All-Conference Honorable Mention status for the soccer team.

Otten allowed only 31 goals and made 161 saves on the year.

Women’s Athletes of the Month:
April Dolezal and Lauren Donlin

Dolezal and Dolin both earned All-GPAC Honorable Mention for their roles on the women’s soccer team.

Dolezal (So.) was the team captain for the lancers. She switched from defender, to midfielder, to goalie throughout the season.

Donlin (Jr.) was by far the team leader in points with 8 (7 goals, 1 assist). Donlin scored the game-winning goal in the team’s only win.
