l-a dat?

― Eu, spuse Momo.

― Tu singură ţi-ai dat numele?

― Da.

Patetică (in)existenţă!

This is one of my favorite paintings: "La Mort de Marat", painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1793 in neoclassical style.

Jean-Paul Marat, a radical journalist and politician of the French Revolution (Jacobin leader), partly responsible for "The Reign of Terror", was assassinated by Charlotte Corday, figure of the French Revolution, which was, at her turn, executed under the guillotine for her bloody act.
This is an idealized image of Marat, with the body of a healthy man, still young, surrounded by details borrowed from his world, including the knife and the letter of Charlotte Corday. The painting is a calm and intimate representation of death. In the meanwhile is an accusation of murder.
The light comes down from his head to his arm to meet the darkness that surrounds the knife. The dark background enhances the image of Marat. Like an artist, Marat is represented with his tools, it's not a paintbrush, but the pen, ink and paper. Maybe he was an artist of his time, an artist of words and passion.

Nominated for an Oscar in 2011 and directed by Lucy Walker, the documentary "Waste Land" is a movie about the transformative power of art.
Lucy Walker confessed that she was interested in garbage, searching the answer to the question: "what it [garbage] says about us?" and wanted to know people who "you do not normally meet in your life". So, the main characters of this movie are the so-called "catadores" (pickers of recyclable materials).
Starting from the idea to "change the lives of a group of people with the same material that they deal with every day" (V. Muniz), the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz spends a few years in his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The artist develops his project "Pictures of Garbage", using garbage as an art medium. In fact, the creative use of materials is his signature. Why garbage? Because: "The beautiful thing about garbage is that it's negative; it's something that you don't use anymore, it's what you don't want to see" (V.Muniz). In order to make his project, the artist rented 4 tons of junk and a warehouse, and together with the "catadores" arranged the trash on the ground to replicate photographs of themselves, that Muniz had taken earlier, then he'd climb 22 m high to take photos of the compositions. All the pictures were sold in auction and 100% of the profits went to the Garbage Pickers Association of Jardim Gramacho.

Let's talk a little about "Blue Velvet", a David Lynch movie.

It all starts in a small town called "Lumberton", where, apparently, nothing happens. I say apparently, because the curiosity of a young man will unearth a weird world, a world of crime and violence, as every forest has its bad weeds, even if we can't see them at first sight.

Starting like a mystery film, "Blue Velvet" will unveil some messed up people: a femme fatale (the local singer), subject of violence and desire, in the same time, the villain, with an Oedipus complex, the questionable main character-the young man that stirs everything up, and a pure girl, that knows nothing about this hidden world but is helping the young man to solve his mystery-she's somehow the perfect opposite. Everything is wrapped in an atmosphere of shadows and darkness.

An important symbol is the bug, that appears in several scenes, and that could be a symbol of the unknown bad world, that stays hidden under a stone, until someone reveals it.

So, I think the symbols are very well used in telling the story, the characters are fascinating, except maybe the one played by Laura Dern (the young girl), which it seemed to me a little fake, and the music is very nice (Badalamanti music).

What is an artist? Who can be one? These are the main questions that Banksy is giving to us through his movie: "Exit through the Gift Shop" (film nominated at Oscars 2011 for best documentary feature).

The film is actually about Thierry Guetta, a french shop keeper and amateur filmmaker who discovers the world of street art and starts filming the graffiti artists he meet until one day when he decides to go in an "impossible mission" to meet Banksy, the most well-known graffiti artist and one of the best, too. He films street artists in the process of creating their work. All the filming could have been transformed in a great documentary and he could have told the truth about the street art, as Banksy once said to Guetta. The only problem is that Guetta is a bad filmmaker and he could never say the story right. This is the main reason for turning himself into a street artist - Mr. Brainwash. After all.. he "learned" from the best.

But the main question is: What is an artist? Is it a mad man, like Guetta, who wants to become bigger than life, to become rich and "brainwash" the people's mind through his art? But, as Banksy said, street art, even art, is not about the money, art is passion, is beeing in the right place at the right time and succeeding to say a message with the right words. Art, in a large way, is not found only in the museums, art is everywhere and it could be a great graffiti, a great sculpture or a building, a perfectly designed town square, a message written in stone or a manifesto etc... Art has lots of shapes and could be around the corner or in front of us and not being able to see it. We have to open our inner eyes to discover that art is much more and, in a way, rules our everyday life. Being an artist doesn't mean to "copy & paste" what made others famous, but being original, being yourself. We all are different, so we can't copy each other, otherwise it will cause chaos. This reminds me of a line from "Basquiat" movie (1996) that goes something like this: "you've got to do your work all the time (...), the same kind of work, the same style, so people can recognize you and don't get confused". So, you have to be yourself and keep it that way! This is what makes us different and unique. Being an artist is much more than knowing how to draw. You have to know how to use your abilities to send a message, your message, to the world, which is the most difficult part of being an artist.

Somebody did. I’ll mention a few names: Magda Sayeg, founder of the knit graffiti crew “Knitta Please” (2005), Inger Lena Gaasemyr with her “Graknitti” project, Carol Hummel and the JafaGirls (Nancy Mellon and Corrine Bayraktaroglu, who were inspired by the “Knitta Please” – see the “KnitKnot Tree”).

The “Knitta Please” crew managed to make knitting go public, by creating works that repositions the granny’s pastime in public spaces, streets dominated by hard, masculine public art culture. They inserted the handmade art in a landscape of concrete and steel. Like Christo who wrapped public buildings, the “knitters” are wrapping the things we sometimes don’t notice when passing by (parking meters, lamp posts, car antennas, exposed plumbing, urban furniture) or things that we see every single day (buses, bike racks, columns, statues...). This is like a statement that says: (1) knitting is more than traditional crafting, (2) learn to see things not only with your eyes, but with your soul also.

By decorating the urban landscape with knitted materials (new and reused) I want to explore hidden boundaries between people. Knitted materials are used for several purposes, (1) as a connotation to the old crafts traditions, heritage, and nostalgia, and (2) to highlight the patterns themselves; how they are made, their origin, and how they can make new connections/interaction between people in this era of rapid communication, (3) as an interactive real-time experience and social context, and (4) a practice-over-product statement and a living strategy of slow activism.”

Her “Graknitti” project introduces new meanings of public and private space that open up for interactions among people. The goals are to focus on public spaces in the urban commercialized landscape and to stimulate social exchange.

When a successful British writer agrees to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang, his agent assures him it is the opportunity of a lifetime, although the project seems to be doomed from the start: „I don’t read political memoirs, who does?”, is the ghost writer wandering, the writer whose identity remains secret. The day he arrives to the fortress that is Mr. Lang’s home, the former Prime Minister is accused of authorizing the illegal seizure of suspected terrorists and handing them over for torture by the CIA and he’s investigated for war crimes.

Another subject that will concern the writer s the death of his predecessor, Mike McAra, murdered because maybe he discovered too much and who left as a legacy an enormous manuscript about Lang’s life, a manuscript full of mysteries waiting to be deciphered. The ghostwriter had to turn this manuscript into a book. On the traces of his predecessor he discovers the mystery behind his death and, finally, after the assassination of Lang and the publishing of his book, the big secret that nobody knew and everybody wanted to know about, the key of the entire movie. The end, not so unexpected, of the ghostwriter is staged off-camera and is suggested by few sound effects and the manuscript spreading all around.

The movie is inspired by the book of Robert Harris, but with a few changes. It is aid that the character of Adam Lang is an allusion to Tony Blair. Is it?

A fascinating movie, that keeps you in suspense till the end.

See more of her work on her blog: Color me Katie

This is an extract from an interview:
- I had no idea I was going to be an artist until I was about 18. Ever since I was a kid I wanted to be an actress. Growing up I took lots of acting classes, did a few commercials, plays, and TV shows. One day I discovered a camera, dropped everything and applied to art school!
- I find my inspiration from the people around me. [...]A few hours sitting at the park or walking around the streets observing people gives me tons of new ideas.
- I have a few ideas for some large community art projects. I really want to involve more people in my work!

Amelia Earhart (1897-1937) - american aviation pioneer and militant of the women's rights, one of the great women of the 20th century - has drawn the attention of the international press, for the first time, in June 1928, when - being a passenger in an airplane - crossed the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the "woman of the year" and, in the same time, an idol for all the women, an example of emancipation.
In the year 1932, following the example of Charles Lindbergh (also known as "Lucky Lindy") - one of the long distance flying pioneers, well known for flying himself the plane that crossed for the first time the Atlantic Ocean (1927) - she wishes to fly solo, as a pilot, across the Ocean. After succeeding the flight she crosses the Pacific and, in 1937, wants to make her greatest dream come true: a trip around the world following the equator line.
