Over 80 people came to hear about Will's adventures along with how his foundation is combating and creating awareness about global climate change. According to The Daily Beast, Duluth is in the top 25 coldest cities in America! The weather is what shapes us Duluthians. It may sound ironic that Loll is in a place that only has decent weather 4 months out of the year, but you know what they say - the less you have the more you appreciate! During a recent trip to Minneapolis for the MN AIA Conference, we visited with our Hive Modular compatriots Brian Meyer and Paul Stankey to discuss good beer, bad design, and the usefulness of late 60’s electronics. Paul and his impeccable rock star wife Sara put us up for the night in their modern modular home in NE Minneapolis; just a stone’s throw from the Mississippi River and Psycho Suzie’s.

Paul and Sara’s house is fitted comfortably between more traditional NE Minneapolis homes providing a contrasting yet clean, sharp definition of space to the neighborhood. Refined custom steel and wood work designed and fabricated by Paul adds to the clean finish and refined furnishings, and the high ceilings and well-placed windows supply wonderful amounts of daylight for doing all sorts of activities inside. If everyone knew how wonderful it is living inside a box nobody would ever pitch their roof again!

Inspired by a childhood spent on the beaches of Cornwall building castles, boats and tunnels in the sand, I decided to return to my favourite beach at Caerhays on the south coast of Cornwall to produce a stool using a primitive form of sand-casting. Molten pewter was poured into a sand mould sculpted directly into the beach by hand, and once cooled the sand was dug away to reveal a pewter stool. ~Max Lamb

We got bombed.....by yarn

Our office entrance got yarn bombed over the weekend! What is yarn bombing you ask? According to this New York Times article,

Yarn bombing takes that most matronly craft (knitting) and that most maternal of gestures (wrapping something cold in a warm blanket) and transfers it to the concrete and steel wilds of the urban streetscape. Hydrants, lampposts, mailboxes, bicycles, cars — even objects as big as buses and bridges — have all been bombed in recent years, ever so softly and usually at night.

We really don't know who was behind our bombing, but that just adds to the fun and mystery of it all. Random acts of kindness can be expressed in so many ways, and this one was not only creative but convenient since holding onto a cold rail mid winter is no fun. So thanks anonymous yarn bomber! You took the time to make our days a little brighter and we salute you!

The Yard Sale contains pieces that are being offered at a discounted price. The Yard Sale includes older models, off-colors, scratch and dent, prototypes, trade show and photo shoot samples, and demo pieces that have been slightly used that we won't sell as new. Much of the furniture is in great condition and will appear as new. The amount an item is discounted is an indicator of its condition, but we will not add items to the Yard Sale unless they appear like new. Check it out here!

Reindeer Pavilion

Situated in Norway's Dovrefjell National Park, this lookout provides shelter for guests hoping to catch glimpses of reindeer, fox, and other delightful creatures.

Reminiscent of rock forms slowly eroded by wind and water processes, the undulating southern facade creates outdoor seating warmed by the sun's rays. constructed with Norwegian shipbuilding techniques in conjunction with advanced fabrication processes and machines, individual 10 inch square wooden beams were milled and assembled with pegs to produce the waving effect. a rigid rectangular frame clad with rusted steel blends into the surrounding landscape while the saturated pine tar treatment of the exterior planks announces its presence to mountain hikers. the interior wall of the gathering space provides additional benches with unobstructed views of the reserve through a floor to ceiling glass enclosure.

This past summer Dubrue joined Duluth craft brewery’s market; their tasty Pub Ale and India Black Ale can be found at a number of taps around town. Polar Explorer at Loll HQ

Polar Explorer and Environmentalist Will Steger stopped by the Loll HQ recently on his way through Duluth. Via 1% for the Planet, Loll has teamed up with Will’s foundation to aid in the global goal of positive climate change solutions. Will believes many of these changes are doable and at the same time will improve our economy, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and create jobs all at the same time. Will has the unique position of being one of a very few humans to see firsthand the effects of global warming in the Arctic. See how Loll is working with the Will Steger Foundation here.

The route that Will traveled by dogsled in 1986 is no longer navigable because the ice is simply gone and not returning anytime soon. The Arctic is the most changeable surface on the surface of the earth, but the last 20 years have seen more change than in the last 100,000. From the WST: “The polar regions are important for several reasons. First of all, they are the canaries in the coal mine; effects of global warming are seen first and most dramatically near the poles. Second, warming at the poles directly effects the climate of the rest of the world. Melting ice increases freshwater output from Arctic rivers, slowing ocean circulation and raising the sea level. The retreat of reflective snow and ice cover exposes more area of dark-colored land and water to solar radiation; this additional absorbed heat further warms the oceans and earth. The Arctic permafrost itself may contain the most dire effects of all. As it melts, it releases trapped carbon and methane greenhouse gases. Arctic soils hold one-third of the earth’s soil carbon. If this were released, it would dwarf human-caused emissions.”

Bike or Walk to Work Week

One of the great things Loll and our sister companies encourage is getting out and exercising at lunch. Brothers, Greg and Dave Benson, are often seen running the trails behind our headquarters at noon and convincing people to join in on the fun.

They decided to combine their love of the outdoors with helping the environment and a local organization by holding the Bike or Walk To Work Week. For every mile that is biked or walked they will donate $1 to the Duluth COGGS; a local bike club that restores bike trails and serves the needs of the local biking community. In addition to getting fit, wearing spandex, and raising money, we will be reducing our carbon footprint which is something the Hawks Boots HQ is all about! Check out 350.org to learn how you can make a difference.

There is also a competitive nature for that week, as the company with the most logged miles wins prizes and can flaunt their dedication and willpower. May the best company win!
