For me, this New Year has brought a huge change that hit me out  of nowhere. I have been married for 5 1/2 years and have a 10-month-old  baby boy who is the light of my life. However, the past month has  revealed not just a crack, but a gaping canyon in my perfect facade of a  family. My husband loves another woman. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I have spent the last  month reeling and just attempting to function in the wake of this  destruction. I don't know if there are any other mommies out there  dealing with similar situations, but I wanted to pass on a few things I  have learned so far. I am still mired in this horrible situation, and I  don’t know what the end result might be. However, this is what I know  for now.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Have a good friend to confide in. Make sure that there  is one person that you can go to, because if you keep it to yourself,  you will go crazy. The depression threatens to overwhelm with no one to  share the burden. Also, keep in mind that professionals are available,  able, and willing to help as well.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Don't do anything out of spite.  This is really hard to do, but very important. Keep in mind who you are  and what kind of person you want to be known as. I don't want to be the  kind of person who spitefully gets back at people, no matter what they  have done to me. I want it to be known that I handle myself with grace  and class. That is also setting the best example for my son. Don't get  me wrong on this, though, I don't mean you should lay down and let anyone  do anything they want to you. Just make sure to think before you act,  and take action that is beneficial to you and won't hurt your cause or  image.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Step back and analyze without emotion. This is another step that is  difficult, but must be done. I have had to take my emotions out of the  equation and take an objective look at the situation. I have to make  decisions based on what is realistic, and think about what is best for my  son. I have to be able to make a budget to determine how to make it  balance. I have to be able to figure out the best way to handle  things that will make the most sense in the long run. I have to make  sure that no matter what happens in the end, the toll on my son is  minimized.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Keep it close. It is hard not to shout from the rooftops  what a @#$* someone is when they wrong you. However, it does no good to  spread your business to the world. It can also come back to bite you in  the backside. That's why it is good to have a few close folks to confide  in, and to keep it from the majority of the world. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Research the  options. It is extremely beneficial to know what laws or ordinances may  pertain in the situation. There are many good resources available online  or locally, so make sure to look at what is out there. This also  pertains to financial information. Always keep all options in mind, and  know who you can turn to in a pinch.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;I hope no one has to  ever go through what is going on in my life right now, but I know that  it is unfortunately all too common. I have learned some lessons I never  wished to learn, but I share them with the desire to help others who may  go through the same trials.   &lt;br /&gt;

Kali cackled as she slathered her last pita wedge with hummus. She was a prankster and had lots of sayings and dirty jokes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"No, it just makes you a lush," commented her sister from the other side of the kitchen.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Dia and Kali, two middle-aged sisters from Mykonos, co-owned the Taste of Greece; an awesome little dive that offered great wine, food, and an unfortunate English homophone.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
During my two years with these ladies, I endured countless hours of Yanni performances to earn money for college. Thankfully, I also gained knowledge that still serves me today: Greek phrases inappropriate for polite society, a case study on sibling rivalry in seniors, and one awesome recipe for spinach and feta cheese pie. This is a great way to add veggies to your menu.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Supplies:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Colander&lt;br /&gt;
1 baking tray&lt;br /&gt;
2 trays or cutting boards&lt;br /&gt;
Wax paper&lt;br /&gt;
Kitchen towel&lt;br /&gt;
Pastry brush&lt;br /&gt;
1 large bowl&lt;br /&gt;
1 small bowl&lt;br /&gt;
Sharp knife or scissors&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Ingredients:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Phyllo dough&lt;br /&gt;
2 8-ounce bags frozen spinach, chopped&lt;br /&gt;
8 ounces feta cheese &lt;br /&gt;
1/2 cup mozzarella &lt;br /&gt;
1 bunch green onions&lt;br /&gt;
2 tablespoons garlic&lt;br /&gt;
2 tablespoons dill weed&lt;br /&gt;
1/4 cup parsley&lt;br /&gt;
1 tablespoon lemon juice&lt;br /&gt;
Pepper and nutmeg, to taste&lt;br /&gt;
1 slightly beaten egg&lt;br /&gt;
1 cup melted butter mixed with equal amount of olive oil&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Instructions &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;The filling: After draining the spinach, mix in all ingredients minus the egg. Mix well, then add the egg. It acts like a glue to hold the filling together.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Working with phyllo: This dough is delicate, like antique parchment paper. The key is keeping it covered. Have a tray or cutting board ready with wax paper covered with a damp kitchen towel.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Take out one of the plastic bags from the box of phyllo dough, and cut it into thirds. You will have three sections of rolled-up dough. Put two of the strips in a storage bag, and seal it for later. Unroll the last one on your empty tray, placing the wax paper and towel over it.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Triangle folding: Set up all your supplies: covered tray of phyllo, large bowl of spinach mix, empty tray to work on, baking tray, and small bowl of butter and oil with a pastry brush.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Remember making little paper footballs with notebook paper? That's what you do with the phyllo here. Take two sheets, and lay them on the empty tray. Put a spoonful of the spinach mix at one end of the phyllo. Fold one corner down and across the filling, making a triangle shape. Continue folding the length of the phyllo strip.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Brush the finished triangle with the butter/oil mixture, and put it on the baking tray. When the tray is full, bake for about 20 minutes at 375 degrees F until they're golden brown.&lt;br /&gt;
Enjoy the yummy, flaky goodness!&lt;br /&gt;

Caveats: There are two things that will ruin this recipe.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Spinach: After thawing the spinach, you have to wring out the excess water by hand or held over the sink between two plates.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Phyllo dough: requires a little preparation, and once it's exposed to air, you have limited time to work with it before it just disintegrates. Also, typically you find it in the freezer section, so make sure you defrost it in the refrigerator overnight. Leaving it out on the counter to defrost doesn’t work. You'll just have a gooey mess.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Tip: I always triple and quadruple this recipe, and fill up extra trays with the triangle pies. Wrap them in wax paper and plastic cling, and put them in the freezer for later. They are an excellent snack and great to bring anywhere for finger foods. They go right in the oven and bake.&lt;br /&gt;

School  was always really enjoyable for me, even though I was not the most  diligent student, and taking some classes at the graduate level is  really appealing at this point in my life.  Now that we are in Charlotte  and settled here for the foreseeable future, it's the perfect time.   Back in September, I got my application all together and applied to the  Masters in Liberal Sciences program at UNC Charlotte. I was accepted and  am all ready to start!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As a SAHM, I naturally have to find  something for my children to do while I am away expanding my mind.   After calls to all my regular girls and asking around, I was lucky to  find someone who was a full-time nanny for a friend but now has time  available right when I need it.  Perfect!  She came over and met the  kids, and I am all set.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I ordered my book for my class (I'm  only taking one—don’t want too much pressure my first semester back in  a decade) and when it came in the mail, I was a bit surprised by its  weight.  Books for graduate school are quite big, I soon learned.  And  in-depth.  This is much more reading than I have done in a while.  But I  got my first assignment and delved in.  I certainly want to be prepared  for my first day!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
After nearly falling asleep several times, I  managed to make it through all 73 pages to prepare myself for the first  day.  Upon reviewing it with a friend, I explained the pages were  completely full of words, two columns worth, and were very dense.  The  sight of a chart was exciting, as it meant less to read.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So here  I am, the week that class starts.  I am more excited than I have been  in quite some time.  My homework is done, I have a new computer, and my  kids are taken care of.  Until I get a text message from the sitter that  I arranged, that is. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
First of all, it is completely  inappropriate to quit a job via text message.  Second, regardless of  what kind of emergency has come up, a person should always live up to  commitments made.  Third, I am incredibly upset.  My anger subsides and  turns into complete deflation.  (Here is where Eeyore comes in.)  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In Chapter 6 of Winnie-the-Pooh, it is Eeyore’s birthday.  Pooh is  going to give him a pot of honey.  However, Pooh eats all the honey, as  he often does.  Piglet is going to give Eeyore a red balloon, but while  running to see Eeyore, Piglet pops the balloon.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So here I am,  with an empty pot of honey and a busted red balloon.  All dressed up  with no place to go.  A dog that doesn't hunt.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But, in this  story, Eeyore is quite pleased when Pooh shows up with the empty pot of  honey.  It is because his popped balloon fits perfectly inside of it.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Sometimes, things fall apart so that others may fall into place.&lt;br /&gt;

Although language study is effective at any age, some studies suggest that the human brain is more open to learning a foreign ­­­­­language ­­­from birth to preadolescence. She loves learning and doing crafts, so I knew they were  going to be a huge hit. I searched online for easy experiments and  came across &lt;a href="http://www.sciencebob.com/index.php" target="_blank"&gt;Science Bob&lt;/a&gt;. This is a great site for basic experiments  to do with kids. We decided to try the Static Tinsel Levitating Orb  experiment.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Supplies&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
1-inch-wide PVC pipe about 24 inches  long: You can also use a regular balloon if you do not have PVC pipe. I  got my PVC pipe at Lowe's, which will  cut your pipe for&lt;i&gt; free&lt;/i&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Mylar tinsel for Christmas trees:  There are many types of tinsel. You should look for the thinnest and  narrowest possible. For the tinsel I used, I was just lucky and found it in one  of my Christmas presents. But Science Bob also sells tinsel on its website.&lt;br /&gt;
A head of clean, dry hair&lt;br /&gt;
Scissors&lt;br /&gt;
Tape (optional)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Lay  out six strings of tinsel, and tie one side of the tinsel into a knot. I  found that if I took three strings and  taped the ends together, and did  the same with the other three strings, it was easier to tie the  knot.&lt;br /&gt;

Repeat, and tie a knot on the other end of the tinsel, making an orb. Cut off any excess string on both ends.&lt;br /&gt;

Take  your PVC pipe, and charge  it up by rubbing it on the back of your hair  or your child's. Virginia was not sure what I was doing to her. I told  her that the PVC pipe is her magic wand.&lt;br /&gt;

By rubbing it in your hair, you are making static electricity.&lt;br /&gt;

Then  take your PVC pipe, and drop the tinsel orb high above it.  The orb should repel when it gets near the pipe. If it doesn't  repel, then your tinsel is too thick. For me, I noticed that sometimes the  orb would stick to my pipe. But if I dropped the orb high above the  pipe, I got the best results. Virginia had a blast doing it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;How Does It Work?&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
It  is all about static charges. Similar static charges repel each other. When you rub the pipe in your hair, you give the pipe a  negative static charge. The orb is attracted to the pipe at first  because the orb has a positive charge. As soon as the orb touches the  pipe, it picks up a negative charge. Since the pipe is negative, and the  tinsel orb is now negative, they repel each other, and the orb  levitates! The orb will also take on more of a ball appearance when  charged, since all the tinsel strands are repelling each other.  Did you notice the orb is attracted to other objects around you — including you? That is because most objects (including you) have a  positive charge. &lt;i&gt;— Science Bob&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Make It an Experiment!&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
The project above is a &lt;i&gt;demonstration.&lt;/i&gt; To make it a true experiment, you can try to answer these questions:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Does the number of Mylar strands affect how well the orb levitates?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Do different materials (hair, fur, and wool) build up better static charges?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;How long does the static charge last, and how can you make it last longer?&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Do different widths of pipe affect the floating ability of the orb?&lt;/li&gt;

January is also known  as the month to get your book on. And I'm not complaining. I don't  mind another excuse to exercise my literary muscles, but research shows  that a large portion of the 18–24-year-old American population doesn't read  for pleasure (August 2010: &lt;a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703846604575448093175758872.html"&gt;http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703846604575448093175758872.html&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That's  a very sad number for the future of our youth. With the invention of eReaders, these numbers are starting to change, but we have our work cut  out for us as parents. The best way to encourage a love of books and  reading is to read with your children, and model the desired behavior by  reading yourself. I know my house is littered with stacks of books,  and both my young daughters have a bookshelf stacked with a plethora  of age-appropriate books. But what if you aren't part of the avid  reader population? What if you want to read more or expand your  reading repertoire? National Book Month is a great time to discover an  American writer! &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
One place to get reading ideas is  the list of National Book Award winners. Every year since 1950, a book  is selected from a genre: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature. Some of the winners include Ralph  Ellison's "Invisible Man," John Irving's "The World According to Garp," and  "Cold Mountain" by Charles Frazier.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another place to locate your next read  would be your local library. Most have a display showcasing current hot  topics or popular works. If you have a certain genre you prefer or an  author you enjoy, your librarian can help you find another book that  would fit your tastes. And what better way to celebrate National Book  Month than to visit the library and show your support? Check out the  bulletin board while you're there to find info on joining a book club.  Book clubs offer another great option for expanding your reading list or  jumping into reading for enjoyment. It's always more fun to discuss the  book with someone or encourage each other to keep reading a little  further if you experience a reading rut. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When in doubt though,  start with the classics. William Faulkner, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Ernest  Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, Edith Wharton, and John Steinbeck all offer  something that is sure to get you started. Or if you prefer more modern  literature, why not pick up that novel your daughter has been reading?  There are some quick and exciting page turners in the young adult genre.  It will give you something for the two of you to discuss and maybe even  provide some insight as to the current trends and issues facing the  youth of today. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Whatever your approach, use this opportunity to  enjoy what American authors have to offer. Pick something that lets you  escape from the stresses of life, and learn more about yourself through  the eyes and life of another person. You might come away a more enriched  person and then as a family, beat the statistics.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;li&gt;All forms of oats are high in a kind of fiber called beta-glucan, which  has special cholesterol-lowering properties; studies have shown that  those with high cholesterol have lowered their total level by 8 to  23 percent simply by consuming 3 grams of this soluble fiber (the  amount found in one bowl of oatmeal) per day.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Oats have a higher fat content than other grains and can go rancid more easily as a result. &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;These are the four basic types of oats:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Oat groats ("whole" oats) are the most intact form; only the outermost inedible hull is removed.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Steel-cut oats (also known as Irish or pinhead oats) are simply oat  groats that have been cut into two or three pieces with steel blades,  slightly decreasing their cooking time. Oat groats and steel-cut oats  are the least processed. They take a long time to cook but result in a  chewy, lower-glycemic treat.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Rolled oats are the result when oat  groats are steamed, flattened, and dried. This is the form most people  know. Though somewhat processed, rolled oats are still a whole grain. I  don't recommend eating oats that have been processed any further than  this, such as quick-cooking or instant oats. They are no longer whole,  intact grains, and instant oatmeal packets often contain copious amounts  of salt, sugar, and other additives.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Oat bran—the finely ground  meal of oat groats' bran layer—though not technically a whole grain,  has the health benefits of one with its high fiber and low starch  content. It makes a good addition to other foods, especially baked  goods. Despite its short cooking time and smooth texture, it won't spike  blood sugar levels, thanks to its soluble fiber.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Below is a  fantastic recipe for busy families.  Be sure to refrigerate your final  product!  Since they are made from fresh ingredients, they have a shelf  life!  (Side note:  I add in a 1/4 cup of soy protein to up the protein  content of each bar.  However, you will need to had a touch more of milk  or applesauce.)  Enjoy!&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Oatmeal On-the-Go Bars (makes 18 bars)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;Ingredients &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
2 cups old fashioned oats&lt;br /&gt;
1 cup whole wheat flour&lt;br /&gt;
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon&lt;br /&gt;
Pinch of salt&lt;br /&gt;
1 teaspoon baking powder&lt;br /&gt;
1 1/2 cups milk (any kind of milk — rice, almond, soy, cow's — will work)&lt;br /&gt;
3 tablespoons agave&lt;br /&gt;
1/2 cup applesauce&lt;br /&gt;
1 large egg&lt;br /&gt;
1 teaspoon vanilla&lt;br /&gt;
3/4 cup dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, blueberries, and/or cherries)&lt;br /&gt;
1/2 cup nuts (walnuts, sunflower seeds, and/or pepitas)&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Instructions &lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Place the first five dry ingredients in a bowl, and stir to combine.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Mix the milk, applesauce, egg, agave, and vanilla in a separate bowl.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Pour the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, stir to combine, and then stir in the dried fruits and nuts.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Pour the oatmeal mixture into a buttered or greased 7x11-inch baking dish.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Bake for 30 minutes or until thickened and golden.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Cool, cut into squares, and serve.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
*Allow  to cool, cut into squares, and place in a Ziploc bag to freeze up to 4  months. When ready, allow to defrost in fridge for 24–48 hours.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
*Refrigerating the bars will make them last up to five days.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Hello, and Happy New Year to everyone!&lt;br /&gt;

My name is Karen Skidmore, and I am the  owner of &lt;a href="http://www.completely-fit.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Completely Fit&lt;/a&gt;, a personal training and fitness company located  in Mount Airy, Md.  I am a team leader for one of the groups in The  Mommies Network Weigh-In Challenge.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All my team members have started off strong and are working very hard to accomplish their goals. They were asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire about  their current nutritional and fitness habits, and answer questions about  what changes they wanted to create. Based on that information, I have  helped each person come up with a detailed action plan that will not  only help to accomplish her goals, but more importantly, help to improve her lifestyle.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are looking to make a change in your life but  are not a part of the Weigh-In Challenge, you too can do it with just a  few small changes at a time.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If your nutrition is off track, start by taking away one unhealthy food once a week and replacing it with a healthy food.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If  your exercise routine is off track, start by finding something you  really enjoy doing — walking, biking, or swimming — and adding 10 minutes of  that exercise to your day.  Before you know it, exercise will have become  a daily routine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Be sure to track your results, as we do much better when we can see our progress.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I am very excited to be a part of this group and team, and I look forward to reporting our successes back to you each month.

If you have a hobby, food, or event that you love, there is likely a holiday for it. Like to scrapbook? Then the first Saturday in May is for you! Ever wanted to say "thank you" to the newspaper-delivery person? Sept. 4 is the day to get it done if you want to be official.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Most of these holidays I am able to ignore with no thought, as they have no meaning for me. But when I learned that January is National Tea Month, I knew it was going to be a good 31 days.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I love to drink tea. When I gave up caffeine after getting pregnant, I was a coffee drinker. Not a lot of coffee, but enough that I had a headache for a few days when I went cold turkey. After my son was born, I started drinking green tea with regularity. I was living in Northern California at the time, where the weather is typically perfect for a cup of tea in the morning. My husband bought me a great teapot, and we invested in a hot-water kettle. I would put one bag in the pot and steep it, drinking it over the morning. Usually it required a heat-up by the last cup or so, but it was perfect to have it there and ready to warm me up.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
That was almost five years ago. I still use a teapot but have now upgraded from the kettle to a water boiler. You know you drink a lot of tea when you add a water boiler to your life. Instead of turning on the stove with your kettle, or pushing the button on your electric kettle, the water boiler gives you the correct temperature of water at the push of a button, no waiting. Of course, if you have instant hot water on your sink, you may not find this quite as cool, but I have never been so blessed. I still have to fill up my water boiler, but am rewarded with 195 degree F water whenever I am ready for my perfect cup. While coffee should be brewed with boiling water, doing so with tea will cause a bitter cup, especially with green teas.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So why should you give up the coffee habit for tea? Well, it's National Tea Month! Still need convincing? How about weight loss? January is well known for being the month of resolutions, many of which focus on weight loss. There is actually science behind the green tea weight-loss claim, which I won't bore you with, as I don’t understand it myself. Essentially, green tea boosts your metabolism just a little bit. Don’t offset it with calorie heavy sweeteners. Use Splenda, or learn to drink it plain.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A cup of tea is also a great way to wind down at the end of a busy day. Instead of choosing a glass of wine, which not only has plenty of calories, but alcohol will also disrupt sleep patterns, a cup of warm chamomile will calm you down and prepare your body for sleep.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Black tea has been shown to reduce heart attack and stroke in men. So National Tea Month is something you can do with your significant other!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The next time you need a pick-me-up or want to warm up a bit, reach for the kettle, and brew a cup of tea. It’s good for you.&lt;br /&gt;

Why is that even relevant in a month full of festivities and family  gatherings? In this season of eggnog-drinking with distant relatives, and  possibly contemplating the links that unite you genetically to the  orange-haired lady shuffling around in reindeer slippers, we celebrate  our heritage. Part of that history as Americans includes rebellion. And  for the last 100 years, a common way to express that defiance for  American women has included roller skates.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/proctorphotos/gun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/proctorphotos/gun.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In the Wild West, that  spirit presented itself in women who were free to make their own bad  choices, like shooting a Winchester on skates, because apparently,  nobody told a pioneer woman what to do! In the early 1900s, our  suffragette grandmothers carried that tradition forward by strapping on  skates to picket the White House for the right to vote. They also hosted  all-night skate-a-thons for the cause. Viewed in this historical  context, women who strap on gear to play roller derby are just the most  recent in a long line of skate-wearing rabble-rousers.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/proctorphotos/Roller_skate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" src="http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc463/proctorphotos/Roller_skate.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;American  Levant Richardson could have had no idea when he patented the final design  in 1884 that the wheeled boot would be used in the women’s independence  movement. Although Richardson made skates faster by adding ball bearings  to the wheels, the credit for the original invention goes to the  Scandinavians. Sources conflict over whether it was a Dutchman, Belgian,  or Swede who actually strapped wheels onto his ice skates. But one  determined northern European wanted to enjoy the winter sport regardless  of the season. They weren’t a hit. (See picture to the left). Love for  roller skating was limited to a few die-hard fans and an efficient bunch  of waitresses in Germany, who used them to zip through the beer halls  in the 1800s. So, when those Scandinavians immigrated to the New World,  they brought with them Santa Claus, lederhosen, and skates. Americans  latched on to the best of these Old World inventions and made them  mainstream.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
During this holiday season, remember the remarkable  history of women, and be sure to share it with the next generation. Take  time to recognize the underlying American tradition of taking old,  outdated, bizarre ideas and making them cool: Our competitive nature  drives us to make things better. Store this little bit of hope away for  the next family function. Who really knows what secrets the little  orange-haired relative of yours is keeping under wraps?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

I'd like to thank pregnancy for this  enlightening experience.  To be honest, I didn't have much of a choice, I  was delighted to be back on the race scene and soaking up the energy of  all the other happy runners and supporters.  It was Thanksgiving  morning, and I was getting to run with my husband.  Untainted joy coursed  through my veins!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/mandjmistletoe20112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="214" src="http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/mandjmistletoe20112.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;Life delivered some ups and downs in 2011.   One of those downs was not getting to race — no road races and no  triathlons.  One of the ups is that I am pregnant.  So, to be back in  my element, I literally felt as if someone slipped LSD into  my water bottle — not that I know what it's like to trip on LSD,  seriously.  I was running on all-natural euphoria!  Training and racing  are what I do and what brings me closest to my Creator.  It is my  passion, my relaxation, my meditation, and my freedom.  It's not how I  define myself, but more simply it is what I was born to do and what I  thoroughly enjoy.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Wait, where was I?  I digress. Back to  Thanksgiving Day, hubby (Jeff), and Gallop &amp;amp; Gorge 8K in Carrboro,  N.C.  The gun goes off, and so do I, leaving my husband in the dust.  Upon  realizing we were pregnant, we made a pact: We would do as many road  races together as we could, which meant starting and finishing together.   How cool!  Our own little Adventure Series!  Piece of cake for a  pregnant lady, but not cool when I am fit and fast and not pregnant, and  refuse to be held back by anyone.  On any given race day, I become  Pavlov's dog, only the bell is replaced with a starting gun, and the food  is replaced by the vision of a finish line.  What remains the same is  the drooling and the complete focus on getting what we want.  And not  even pregnancy thwarted this all too natural response of mine.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;So,  in my glazed-over state observed merely by my unbreaking stride and  joyful grin, I take off, weaving my way through people I think are  so wonderfully fantastic, but at the same time, just too slow for me to  stay behind.  Within the first few minutes, I realize Jeff is not beside  me.  I quickly turn around, remembering I am pregnant and hoping I  don't get trampled on by other runners, or trip and fall over my Size 11 feet, I find him jumping trash cans and darting through people's  yards to catch up to me.  Oops.  His comment: “What are you trying to  do, beat all the other 1,000 pregnant women out here?”  Clearly, he was  irritated since I seemed to be the only pregnant woman out of  1,400 runners.  Oops, again.  But I felt great!  Not even out of breath!  I  told him to stay by my side, and I'd get us to a clearing so we could  settle into a stride. I was left with a stare, a very serious stare that  stands 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs about 225 pounds. I released the  accelerator, we laughed, and we trotted on to a strong yet relaxed 8:36/min pace and crossed the finish line together, holding hands.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/2011MistletoeRace018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="240" src="http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/2011MistletoeRace018.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Moving  on to Dec. 3, 2011, and the Mistletoe Half Marathon, a historically  epic race known for its postrace buffet, runners dressed in their  best Santa Claus and elf attire, a hilly but beautiful course, and  reuniting with old and new friends.  For many, it is the last race of  the season.  I have done it every year since 2006 except for last year, when I traded my running shoes for margaritas and Bloody Marys on a  Belize beach at 9 a.m. (honeymoon!).  Not wanting to miss another Mistletoe  and excited about crossing another finish line with Jeff, we signed up and began our preparations.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: inherit; text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Twenty-six weeks pregnant and sporting a  round belly, I toed the line and finished in 2 hours and 3 minutes (36  minutes slower than my previous race — see, I am taking things more  conservatively!).  The starting line was glorious!  Cold but sunny and  insulated by Jeff to my left and my two best gal pals to my right and  2,000 other runners infiltrating Sunset Avenue in Winston-Salem, N.C.'s West End.   And this time, I received the starting gun with more awareness and took  my time weaving through the start crowd.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Ahhh, but that didn’t last  very long.  It happened again: I got glazed over and entered the sixth  dimension, Ma-la-la-Land, and I took off.  But this time, Jeff didn’t  catch me until mile marker 2.5.  Feeling slightly guilty but secretly  annoyed that he fell off the pace so soon, I glanced over and saw a  large man dripping with sweat — gloves and hat already peeled off and  dangling from his shorts.  He gave me the nod that he was OK, so off we  went, cruising along at about a 9:00 minute/mile pace.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;How lucky was  I?  Really?  Healthy, active, pregnant, and doing what I love with the  man that I love — life is good (I know, pretty cliche of me).  I  suppose life was good until my bladder spoke up and just couldn't take  it anymore at Mile 3.  The one and only mobile toilet on the course was  at Mile 6.  I was in big trouble.  The course was way too suburban for me  to urinate on the curb, plus with all the cops directing the runners on  the course, I was bound to be arrested for indecent exposure.  My  bladder held on, and I greeted that big green stinky toilet with  excitement, but I was third in line.  What?!  This is going to kill our  pace!  Sweet, sweet Jeff waited for me and after three long minutes, and we  were back on the course, running where, darn it, I took off again.  I  just felt so good.  About 1 mile later at the apex of a hill, that  tall stare peered down on me again, and a talk-to-the-hand gesture  instantly flashed with his words reaching me loud and clear: “If you  keep this up, you’ll be finishing alone.”  I didn’t finish alone, and  neither did he.  We crossed again holding hands, shared a smile and wink,  then headed straight for the food and water.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;a href="http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/2011MistletoeRace015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"&gt;&lt;img border="0" height="240" src="http://s1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa454/evolvemultisport/2011MistletoeRace015.jpg" width="320" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;People have told me  that having a child would change me, and subsequently, all that racing  and career stuff will wane in importance.  Yes, becoming a mother is an  enormous game changer and a quite welcomed one.  But wow, how intrusive  for someone to assume or make a statement that I would change my  outlook on the other loves of my life.  Yes, they do take a back seat,  but they are still a priority.  By the way, I wonder if someone would  ever say that to a man?  I digress again. My son has given me the gift  of patience, and he has given me a reason to want to work harder and  strive for greatness.  He has made me realize what is truly important in  life, and in particular, in my life and my family's life.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Racing  pregnant has been a blast!  I have been somewhat forced to stop and  smell the roses or perhaps, the aroma of sweaty runners, and notice a  few things.  Oftentimes, athletes forget all too quickly what a race can  give back to us: fellowship, sharing of achievements, and the reminder  that we are all in this world together trying to be better people.  As a  coach and fellow athlete, I continue to witness everyone's observable  capabilities, as well as those that lie hidden deep within all of us.   Whether you enter a race to win, to conquer a goal, or to  share an experience, you will find that every challenge asks us to step  outside our comfort zone.  For me, slowing down has been an enormous  step outside my nice and cozy comfort zone.  But by welcoming discomfort, we discover those hidden talents, strengths, and gifts  that lie unnoticed within us and awaken to recognize those roses we  forgot to stop and smell.  Everyday, step outside YOUR comfort zone, and  unleash your potential!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

You  either love this Thanksgiving tradition or hate it. Whether you belong  to the hate or love the cranberry camp, you probably don’t think much  about this fruit until the day before the big feast. Luckily, there is  probably a can left over from last year waiting in the pantry. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Aside from being a cute, round, oddly hard  berry, it is also known as a super fruit. Yes, like the blueberry and  now wildly popular pomegranate, the cranberry is high in antioxidants.  Traditionally the cranberry was used medically to treat UTIs and was  thought to be effective due to its high acid content, but more recent  research has discovered that it's not the acidity levels but the actual  components of the cranberry that are medically beneficial. This is due  mainly to the type of proanthocyanidins (PACs) found in the fruit.  Cranberries are also used nutritionally for stomach issues/ulcers due to  the fruit's antibacterial properties. They are even used in the animal  medical field for the prevention of UTIs and immune support. And, of  course, don’t forget that they taste great as juice in a cosmopolitan (or  your little one's sippy cup). &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Personally, I prefer to use whole  cranberries as a component of an apple bake or ground up and added with  massive amounts of sugar to make our family cranberry-salad recipe. I  have no fear of pulling out a can of whole-berry cranberry sauce, adding  some mayo, and whipping up a dipping sauce for some turkey-sage-phyllo  roll-ups. As long as I'm using the berry in its whole form, I'm doing my  part to try to incorporate whole foods in our diet. Some say the sugar  and mayo nix the efforts but nobody's perfect!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;So, the next time  you pass by the bags of frozen cranberries in the freezer section at  your local store, don't walk past and head straight for the frozen peas.  Cranberries, like peas, deserve a chance.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

But this doesn’t mean the spirit of Christmas has to end. There are plenty of memories left to be made and fun to be had. It just takes a little imagination and a sense of adventure. Who says you can’t add some new family traditions? After all, just because fruitcake is the dessert of the season doesn’t mean you have to eat it!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Christmas Day is a huge day in the entertainment industry for big blockbuster releases. And what better way to relax than with a small popcorn, Diet Coke, and theater seating? Options range from family-appropriate features to catching that new action or romantic comedy on a much-needed date night while the grandparents watch the kiddos. Or stay at home, and save all that money by watching a movie and snacking on leftover pies and cookies. Many of the big blockbusters from the summer are available just in time for gift giving.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If watching a movie is just too quiet and antisocial for your family, why not open up one of those board games to get the excitement going? Jenga, Scrabble, Pictionary, and Trivial Pursuit are a few of our family favorites. Or if you want to sweat off a few of those cookie calories, try out Dance Party on the Xbox.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Never underestimate the value of a nice walk with the family or the family dog. Hey, Rover could use a break from the holiday chaos like the rest of us! Getting some fresh air and exercise helps to settle the nerves, invigorate the spirit, and put all this giving and receiving into perspective. Making room for more sugar cookies is always a good thing too!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Or use the Christmas season as a teachable moment. Show your children the true meaning of the season by volunteering as a family at a local charity. Another way to give (this is especially great for younger children) is to clean out the toy box before taking out any new gifts. Have them help decide which items they want to donate to a needy child. The side benefit is a tidier house!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Whatever you decide to do to keep up the Christmas cheer, try to do it as a family, and make it your own. And don’t feel let down that all the excitement has come to a culmination. Super Bowl parties and Valentine's Day are just around the corner to provide an opportunity for camaraderie and another excuse to sample some chocolate.&lt;br /&gt;

Whenever I smell one of the dishes cooking or take my first bite, the years of fond holiday memories come flooding back.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

While there, they would frequent a great little restaurant called Benton's, where they would serve a wonderful, melt in your mouth, broccoli cornbread. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1/2 cup margarine, melted&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 large onion, chopped&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 10-ounce package of frozen chopped broccoli, thawed and drained&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;4 eggs, beaten&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;6 ounces cottage cheese&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 teaspoon salt&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 8 1/2-ounce package Jiffy corn muffin mix&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Combine all ingredients except cornbread mix.  Stir in muffin mix.  Pour batter into a buttered 13x9-inch baking dish.  Bake at 400 degrees F for 25–30 minutes.  Serves 8–12.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

I just remember how amazing it would taste and how that scoop of Breyers vanilla bean ice cream would melt on contact with it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 cups fruit&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 3/4 cups sugar&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1/2 cup butter&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 c. self-rising flour&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1/2 cup milk&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Cook fruit in 3/4 cup sugar until the sugar is cooked down into the fruit juice.  Melt 1/2 cup butter in a 11x13-inch baking dish.  Mix flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 cup milk together, and pour over the butter. Next, pour the fruit mixture on top.  Do not stir! Cook at 375 degrees F until bubbly, about 40–45 minutes.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

I always begged her for the recipe, but it was a closely guarded secret.  I thought she would never give up the recipe, but about a year before she passed away, she gave it to me.  I love this recipe, and every bite reminds me of her love from the oven.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 c. elbow macaroni&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 tablespoons butter&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 tablespoons flour&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 teaspoon salt&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 1/2 cups milk&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 cups shredded cheddar cheese&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Cook the macaroni like normal.  While that is cooking, in a saucepan, combine the milk, butter, and salt.  Bring to a slow boil, and whisk in the flour.  Make sure the flour is combined completely.  When the macaroni is done, strain it, and put it in a baking dish, then pour the milk mixture over the noodles.  Stir in the cheese, retaining a little to sprinkle over the top.  Bake for 20–25 minutes until bubbly.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

For many, it offers a chance to  look back and reflect on what we planned for the previous year and  compare our accomplishments to our list of resolutions. It also opens  the topic of resolutions for the New Year and whether we're going  to roll over those goals (start my own hobby farm), modify our goals  (see the midnight showing of "Breaking Dawn: Part 1"), or drop them entirely  (a daily jog?!). For some, it means beginning a list for the first time  or dropping the idea entirely. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Whatever your plan, there is no  better time to do this than on National Make Up Your Mind Day. If the  dropping ball and the impeding "3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!" moment isn’t  motivation enough, this national holiday should push you to get it done.  Consider it your dress rehearsal before the big play. While the banks  don't recognize this as an excuse to close for the day, it is all the  rage in the e-card world. So, why not take this opportunity to  finally make up your mind already, and spruce up your resume, or paint  that room bright purple, or take a walk, or enroll in a college course?  You're almost guaranteed to feel more organized and decisive on January  1 if you spend the day before observing a procrastinator's nightmare  of a holiday.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Coming from a procrastinator and a Gemini, I say, make up  your mind. Do it.  Having a goal to improve your current circumstances  or better yourself is never a bad idea. But while you are at it, make  up your mind that you will not beat yourself up if you don't do exactly  everything on your list. Or, decide that this year you will not make any  resolutions. Instead, make plans to make no plans so you will be sure  to not fail at keeping your resolutions. Either way, the time is now.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;As for me, I'm using this day as an opportunity to make a huge list of  dream goals, just so I can look back at the end of next year and laugh at  what I thought was a priority as a younger me. And it also shows me  that I can accomplish something if I truly want it badly enough.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;My grandfather on my Dad's side raved about it and was over the moon each time my mother brought it to him. After my parents divorced, she would even send me to my Dad's with a plate to give to him because she knew how much he loved it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Years later, when I was living on my own, I decided to try to make a batch, as my mom had given me the recipe, titled, "Nancy's Never-Fail Fudge."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;One of the main ingredients is Fluff, and when I bought it, I noticed on the jar, there it was, the recipe for "Never-Fail Fudge." I found it very amusing, as all this time I had thought this was a special recipe my Mom had made up. And of course, I had to tease her about it.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Sadly, my mother passed away last year, so during the holidays, making her special treats brings back sweet memories. And I am comforted to know that I can always find the special recipe, because it's right there on the jar. It is quite easy to make and really the creamiest, richest, most delicious fudge.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;2 1/2 cups sugar&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;3/4 teaspoons salt&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1/2 stick butter or margarine&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 5-ounce can evaporated milk (2/3 cup)&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 jar (7 1/2 ounces) Marshmallow Fluff&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;3/4 teaspoon vanilla&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;1 12-ounce package semisweet chocolate pieces&lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&lt;u&gt;&lt;b&gt;Instructions&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/u&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Grease a 9-inch square baking pan. Set aside. In large saucepan, combine the first five ingredients. Stir over low heat until blended. Increase heat to medium, and bring to a full-rolling boil being careful not to mistake escaping air bubbles for boiling. Boil slowly, stirring constantly for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in vanilla and chocolate until chocolate is melted. Turn into greased pan, and cool. Makes 2 1/2 pounds.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;While I was never a kid to eat fluffernutters, the peanut butter and fluff sandwiches, I decided to do some digging into the history of fluff to see if I could find out where this recipe originated. So, along with the recipe, I thought I'd share some fun facts about this old favorite, which I pulled from its company &lt;a href="http://www.marshmallowfluff.com/" target="_blank"&gt;website&lt;/a&gt;. Among the tidbits I found interesting were that some local housewives in New England were part of the reason for its early success.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Fun Facts About Fluff&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;On May 14, 1920, a small article appeared in the Lynn, Mass., Daily Evening Item, announcing that two young men, H. Allen Durkee and Fred L. Mower, both veterans of the U.S. Infantry in World War I, had formed a partnership to manufacture Marshmallow Fluff. The company numbered two men in those days, and they started out cooking their confections in the kitchen at night and selling them door-to-door in the daytime.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;An early receipt still in the company's scrapbooks records the sale in April 1920 of three 1-gallon cans to a vacation lodge in New Hampshire, where I grew up! The price at the time was $1 a gallon! The door to door trade gained a reputation among local housewives that eventually placed Fluff onto local grocers shelves. Retail trade spread from there to the point where in 1927, it was advertising prominently in Boston newspapers.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;They started by redesigning the product's package. A survey covering a wide sample of New England housewives told them that the experts, their customers, thought the best jar for Fluff would be short enough to fit easily into the refrigerator to be used for leftovers (Fluff requires no refrigeration), and have a wide enough opening to fit a tablespoon. In addition, the jar was made with a stippled surface above and below the label to make it stronger and more easily gripped. The jar's longevity in a rapidly changing market is a tribute to its success: The same basic jar is still in use today.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Every conceivable measure is taken to protect the purity of Marshmallow Fluff. Because of the sanitary environment and practices, it is not necessary to refrigerate Marshmallow Fluff, even though it still contains no preservatives.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;In 1956, when my Mom was just a toddler, the company collaborated with Nestle in a nationwide ad campaign that won the Promotion of the Year Award. They printed a recipe for fudge in Ladies Home Journal and other magazines. The fudge was quick and easy to make, and included Fluff and Nestle Chocolate Bits. The same recipe can still be found on the backs of Fluff labels and in the recipe book, titled, "The Yummy Book."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Durkee-Mower continues to market new uses for Marshmallow Fluff. In 1966, it co-promoted a new "Marshmallow Treat" recipe with Kellogg Co., utilizing its Rice Krispies cereal and Marshmallow Fluff. It presents an opportunity to share quality time by making it with your children and continues to be a favorite.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

During the chilly winter months, we find ourselves spending the  majority of our time indoors, making it quite easy to send and receive  those unwanted cold and flu cooties.   Both the common cold and the  flu are extremely contagious.  Many of these germs are spread by  hand-to-hand contact and are also airborne.   It seems as though we are  destined for some sort of sniffle each year.  However, we have control  to a certain extent!   Give it your best shot this winter and beyond to  avoid those pesky cold and flu critter invasions.  Here are the top 10 tips for staying healthy during cold and flu season: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;ol&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt; Sleep eight hours a night.   Yes, lack of sleep can affect the immune system.  While we sleep, our  immune system releases proteins called cytokines.  Cytokines are  necessary for fighting infection.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt; Get stress levels under control.   Stress can decrease immune system function.  Research has found that  cortisol and catecholamines, hormones that are released during times of  stress, can turn down the effects of the immune system. Spending too much time indoors, especially around people, can increase  your chances of contracting those cold and flu cooties! There is no better way to receive  vitamins and minerals than through fresh fruits and vegetables and whole  grains.  For the dairy lovers and meat eaters out there, choose the  leanest options available.  Vitamins and minerals provide our cells with  the building blocks it needs to fight off disease!  Excess sugar and  fat can create a systemic inflammatory response, making it more difficult  for our bodies to fight off disease and illness.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt; Hydrate!   Water can flush toxins from the body and carry much-needed nutrients  to our body’s cells and tissues.  The dry winter months can cause  insensible hydration losses that we are typically not aware of. &lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt; Rinse the nasal passages!   A practice that many refer to as nasal flushing is a safe and  effective way to clean out the nasal passages.  During cold-weather  months, the respiratory tract creates more mucus in an attempt to warm  and moisten our airways.  When that mucus spends too much time inside  the body, germs can linger and proliferate.  By flushing the mucus from  your nose, you are removing some of those unwanted infestations. Keyboards, doorknobs, countertops, and fruits and vegetables can  all be hosts and carriers of bacteria and viruses. It's designed to make  your bed warm before you go to sleep, so you don't slip into cold  sheets.  About a month ago, I managed to damage it, much to my husband's  disappointment.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;I learned how to sew last year, so I decided I  would make another one, instead of buying a replacement, as it was quite  expensive.  I borrowed a friend's sewing machine, ordered the fill from  Amazon, and chose a really cool print from the fabric store from which I  would make the cover.  When I got everything together, it wasn’t any  more trouble to make one for each of my children.  And then I thought my  sister, who lives in London, would really appreciate one, as well.   After that, I went a bit crazy making pillows and giving them away to  friends and family I thought would enjoy them.  I made a few smaller  ones for kids and even one that could be tied for a friend who had  sprained her ankle.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="postbody" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;On yet another trip to the fabric store, I came  across a fabric with the University of Minnesota logo printed all over  it.  Overcome with excitement, I bought all they had left and went  home to work on another cover.  I was so overjoyed because I have  cousins who are Minnesota fanatics.  They even have a camper painted in  Minnesota colors they take to games.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="postbody" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;After I was done, I ran into the  living room to show my husband, jumping with joy over the little pillow.   What I had discovered was how good it felt to give.  I really wanted  to be there when they opened the package, seeing their faces.  Since I  had some leftover fabric, I made a little skirt for my newest cousin.  I  just know her mom is going to smile when she tries it on the little  one.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="postbody" style="font-family: inherit;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Because I was so addicted to my sewing machine this  December, I made a few more gifts, as well.  In my basement is a  footlocker full of fabric that belonged to my grandmother, who died more than 15 years ago.  It has moved with me over the years, all the while  tucked away, with no purpose.  She was going to make curtains out of the  fabric; the top of several panels already had the mesh backing to  prepare it for a curtain rod.  I couldn't bear to part with it and never  had a plan for it until a few weeks ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;We put up the tree,  and my husband remarked that we needed a tree skirt.  Every year, we just  put a sheet around the bottom and called it a day.  When he said it  this year, however, a little light bulb went off in my head.  Aha, I  shall make one and I have just the fabric for it.  It took a while, and I  had to look up a pattern online, but after I finished, it was just as  easy to make a few more.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;I made two additional tree skirts.  I  sent the first to my sister in London and the other to my aunt, my  grandmother's daughter.  Packing them into boxes with letters explaining  what they were and from what I had crafted them filled me with joy, a joy I  never found in the perfect sweater or fulfilling my son's Santa wishes.   I had made something with love.  It couldn't be found in a store and could be used every year, brought out with memories of a woman who loved  Christmas so much that she had a special window installed in her living  room to show off her tree.  It felt good to have the spirit of giving,  and I am trying to pass it along to my two children, both of whom seem  to think Christmas is about the daily Advent chocolate and opening  presents.  I suppose they are too young to really understand, but I will  keep trying, as I wish I had had this feeling years ago.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
