Retired Japanese Couple Turns Home Into a Bookshop and Cafe

Here's a lovey way to work from home. A retired Japanese couple has turned their amazing abode into a bookshop and a cafe. They sought help from the architects of Atelier Bow-Wow to design a home that will be open to the public. The store slash library is located at the Izu peninsula, hence the name Izu Book Cafe. The concept is nothing new. Locally, there is a man who has this type of setting in his home sans the cafe part. He lets his neighbors borrow his books and have them returned whenever they feel like it. Some don't even return the books at all! The natural wood beans that line the ceiling are amazing! It makes the whole place a place of serenity and comfort. There's almost like a spa-vibe appeal to this place. How lovely is it to be immersed in your favorite book here, right?

The Farm Resto: Serving More Than Just Organic Beef

Seeing delicious photos of burgers on Instagram care of Kariz Favis - wife of Tom Favis, owner of The Farm Organics and the restaurant - prompted me and my glutton crew to visit the new The Farm Resto a couple of days ago. It was just too enticing to resist, I tell you!

I've been a big fan of their products since I saw them on the freezer shelves of Rustan's Fresh Shangri-la Plaza Mall last year. Aside from the beef being organic, I also like the fact that they are vacuum packed {sealing the all important juices in}. It keeps the product fresh and odor-free.

Organic beef are those that come from cattles that are exclusively fed with 100% chemical-free grass. These cattles are not given antibiotics nor any form of enhancers such as bovine human growth hormone {rbGH}. The latter forces the cow to produce more milk with....wait for it....pus and a cancer enhancing hormone. Since they don't use fertilizers or pesticides, organically grown beef helps save Mother Earth as well.

Okay, enough with the organic beef 101; let's go now to The Farm Resto. The facade is very unassuming. I liken it to a Starbucks store; no matter where the store is located {even in a dump site}, the consumer is magically transformed into a different world once inside.

I love the interiors! The place is dominated by wood, making it very cozy and relaxing. We went there during a rainy day, so it was extra cozy. The whole place is simple but done to a tee. Hubs pointed out the proverbs written on a chalkboard. He likes that kind of stuff.

They also sell other eco-friendly products at The Farm Resto. They have Messy Bessy, Human Nature and Grandma's Secret to name a few.

I took a liking to these cute table number and candle container.

And now for the main event! I almost did a cartwheel upon seeing the words 'Bone Marrow' on the chalkboard menu! I love bone marrow! No, I'm not on a Paleo diet; I just like the stuff, that's all! I got it from my dad.
This delicious delicacy has been given a bad rep for far too long. I'm not gonna touch on the taste anymore because as we all know, it's deadly good! Bone marrow is a good source of calcium and protein. Yes, it contains fats, but it is polyunsaturated fat {the good fat} which can help lower one's cholesterol. This is not my way of convincing myself that bone marrow is good just because I like it. It's a fact. Of course, like all other things, the key here is eating in moderation. Over indulging is a sin...or not. It depends. *wink*

Organic Bone Marrow PhP 295

The fat was still sizzling and bubbling when the waiter placed the Roasted Organic Bone Marrow in front of us. I thought that it was overcooked, but turns out it was just the spices that looked burnt. As you can the see from the photo below, the inside it was cooked perfectly. The marrow was buttery soft and lightly seasoned. It was truly satisfying. I put some on my rice and hallelujah it was good!

Hubs and eldest son ordered the Classic Cheeseburger and Bacon Cheeseburger respectively. The burger patty itself was delicious, juicy and cooked really well. The bun was good, but I prefer a potato bun though. It would also be great if there are a variety of cheese choices or a cheese stuffed version of the patty. This would work well with a gruyere, comte, or monterey jack. Just a suggestion though.

Our boys loved the French Fries a lot! The burgers doesn't come with fries, so you have to order this one as extra. They are thicker than the usual fries, crispy on the edges and soft on the inside. I appreciate the fact that they didn't sprinkle it with too much salt. This is a must-try!

My favorite amongst all is this lovely, lovely Rib-Eye Organic Steak! It needs no sauces because the meat is so flavourful, juicy and fantastic! All the good seasoning is infused in every single piece of sliced meat. Just like what Jamie Oliver said: "It's gorgeous!" It annoys me sometimes when he continuously utter those words though.

The prices at The Farm Resto are not bad at all. This huge chunk of goodness is PhP 795. That's for a steak...scratch that....that's for a great organic steak! It's reasonable enough for me. This is the larger order, which is approximately good for 2-3 persons or one glutton.

To cap off the end of our good experience at The Farm, we each had a Nutella Cupcake. This is a real winner! I'm not a big fan of nutella {crucify me}, but this one I like! Our youngest was the one who picked this cupcake for dessert. It was so moist, fudgy and amazing. I bought more to go!

Bummed that we didn't get to try the Lemon Green Tea that day. They ran out. That's okay because we will be back to try more stuff. My sister is actually forcing me to go back there soon {like, tomorrow soon!}. I'm gonna try the smoothies, other burger variants and the bone marrow again!!! Booyah!

As the saying goes...start 'em young! In terms of healing the planet, that is. Our generation and the future ones are geared towards helping Mother Earth renovate from the abuse she has received from the past. I'm a supporter and a patron of sustainable, eco-friendly products. One such local environment friendly product that has captured my attention is these cute nappies from Dappy!

What's so good about these diapers?

Bamboo cloth doesn't irritate the skin because it's organic and breathable.
The fabric contains a natural antibacterial and anti-fungal agent called Bamboo Kun.
It is biodegradeable and compostable.

A Retrospective Look at Sixties Decorating Style With A Twist

I prefer homes that are a myriad of fine things that looks amazing when combined together. There's just so much character in these types of abode. It looks unruly at first glance, but its beauty emerges when stared at. I like homes where each piece is a conversation starter {not just for aesthetics}and has a story.
I've been heavily coveting on tweaked sixties style of decor as of late. The one below is a great example of mismatched styling done right. It's not a home actually. It's one of my favorite denim's showroom in West Hollywood: Citizen's of Humanity. It has the great components of a sixties styled home and is also peppered with bohemian accents at the same time. If David Hicks and Muriel Brandolini had a shared vacation home, this would be it.

Large glass jars {below} are such a nice necessity to every home. I have one at home. I put all our soaps {all white} in it. It's such a versatile piece.

In social media networks, parents are notorious for uploading pictures of their kids’ achievements; from winning a gold medal in a rhetorical competition to as simple as a potty training success. Most of it is justified, while the rest is just completely exaggerated and sometimes, annoying. There’s more to the I’m-just-proud-of-my-kids demeanor. A child’s achievement is clearly a reflection of one’s parenting. Their children are their bragging rights.

In tattling the glory of their children, have you ever seen a status that denotes anything about their children’s humility?

In restaurant today, I overheard an 8-year old boy bragging about his condominium and his gigantic television set talking to a middle-aged man. The kid’s father was smiling with pride as his son babbles about their material wealth to others. It was a cringe-worthy sight to see.

Kids are growing up in a world where they are constantly told that they are the best and that they can do anything, even conquer the world. They are given that enormous amount of confidence to overpower others for their very survival.

Tools for arrogance are in abundance. They are given the latest gadgets, the latest clothes, the best shoes, and the best anything that their parents’ money can buy. In an article on New York Times entitled “IsThis the Best Education Money Can Buy?”, a question was raised if humility exists in a school where crowning pompousness is the norm.

Is this a bad thing? Surely not! Giving the best life to our children – beyond what we've experienced – is one of the main essences of good parenting. Another fundamental part of parenting is teaching children the importance of humility in spite of having a frivolous life or lack of.

Lead by example

Genetic make-up and heredity plays a vital part in being humble, but, it can also be a learned trait. Who best to teach kids about humility than their parents? They are their kids’ best teachers. There’s no Humility 101 in a school’s curriculum. A child’s attitude depends on what he was shown and what he was taught by his parents. Circumstances may change one’s attitude over time, but if the background is solid, then the outcome will be good.

Boost a child’s confidence but don’t overdo it

There’s a big difference between making your child believe that he or she’s the best and making him/her believe that she/he's a god. It’s alright to give praises once in awhile; it’s good for a person’s well-being. Pick circumstances that are really worthy of a praise. Don’t be afraid to tell your kid if he/she didn’t do a good job. Follow that up with an advice on how to do it better the next time around. Your goal is to give them honest praises, not empty ones.

Believing in a Higher Providence

It doesn’t matter what kind of religion you have, what matters is the idea that there is someone higher than you, someone better, and someone greater. Teach your kids this notion for them to embrace humility.

Giving financial lessons

Teaching kids early on about money is one of the best ways to make them humble. As they age, they’ll know that money is the major tool to get their wants – be it a toy or an iPad. They may ask you a question such as “Are we rich or poor?” Help them understand that money is a tool to make lives easier, not a means to be superior towards others.

Saying sorry

Apologizing is one of the noblest gestures and one of the best forms of humility. Teach your child the importance of accepting his mistake and saying sorry. Again, this is best done through example. If you’ve done something wrong to your child, don’t think twice before you apologize.

Raise kind-hearted and humble rock stars! The world badly needs this breed. We have the power to make the future better by making our kids the best.

The Great Gatsby actress arrived at the Palais des Festival in a black Balenciaga jumpsuit from the fashion house's Fall 2013 collection. She paired it with sky-high mary janes of the same color and a lovely diamond studs. In keeping with her theme for the day, her make-up was barely noticeable. The simplicity of her overall look emphasized her beauty more! Minimalism is my kind of style. It's very regal, elegant, and exudes confidence!

Carey Mulligan {literally} let her hair down come rainy nightfall. She donned a pale pink Dior Couture gown with a plunging neckline at the Cannes Film Festival's Opening Ceremony held at the Theatre Lumiere. Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous!

Looks like she wore the same shade of eyeshadow and just added a pop of bright red lipstick. Actually, most of the women wore red lipstick, including Cara Delevingne at the premiere. The British supermodel, however, came "overdone". She wore too much of everything! She looked like she came out of an 80's shabby lingerie catalogue...but with bling.

Mulligan topped off her subdued chic look with a pair of radiant diamond drop earrings and bracelet from Tiffany & Co.

Home Reading Nook Design Inspirations

I'm a big fan of books. I don't really consider myself as a voracious reader, but I do read quite a lot {one book per week}. This is the reason why I rarely tweet or do much of anything actually. I'm reading The Medici Effect by Frans Johansson right now, by the way. It's all about tapping the right side of your brain - a.k.a the creative side - to formulate new ideas. I've yet to find out if it works, but loving what I'm reading so far.

My boys {the eldest especially} have picked up this habit of mine, thankfully. Books are good investments, so I encourage them to keep reading. I dream of fixing up a corner or a space in our home as a reading nook for us to share. It doesn't have to be much, but it has to have the essentials of a great reading area: cozy, comfortable, and quiet. A stunning view of the ocean, mountains, or a vineyard is optional but preferable. *wink*

I wish to God I have a space for a big library! I love to be surrounded by books! I love the smell and the feel of paper. I also like to highlight my favorite lines using different colored markers. If they can incorporate these in e-readers, I'd gladly buy one.

A girl sure can dream, can't she? I've compiled a couple of the reading nooks that I love. Most of them are simple chic designs in monochromatic hue. That's my kind of color for home decor.

Effortless, timeless chic best describes Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's style. Her fashion sense was much like the mom-in-law she never met, my other style crush, Jackie Kennedy Onassis.
She's always seen in the most basic attire in the most neutral hues. She was never outlandish. Even in the simplest attire, CBK commanded an enormous amount of attention and admiration. Even her wedding gown and wedding itself was very simple, but oh so lovely! That's style power for you!
The photos below are my justifications for investing in basic and classic pieces. Even after more than a decade later, her ensemble still looks very good and not outdated. Her golden locks was almost always pulled back in a clean bun and with a thick tortoise headband. She rarely wore any jewelry, except for her wedding band and a pair of simple pearl earrings. She didn't need any. Her best accessory was her husband, JFK, Jr.
Her style is one of the easiest to copy and one of the best! Her staples are: flare jeans, khakis, black pants, white long sleeve shirt, trench coat, loafers, and black sunnies.
Not only did she have an impeccable taste in everything, she was also reported to be intelligent, and possessed a really good heart. Paying homage to the other queen of Camelot.

Standout Styles at the Met Gala 2013

This year's Met Gala is all about getting punk'd!
The theme of the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts is "PUNK: Chaos to Couture". A bevy of stylish and not-so-stylish stars {Hello Kim Kardashian} wore their punk best to one of the much anticipated fashion event of the year. Last year, the hollywood celebrities donned glittering gowns to the Met Gala to celebrate the works and fashion contribution of Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada.
Not all of those who attended complied with the theme. One of which is the event's chairman and Vogue EIC Anna Wintour. She wore a floor length Chanel floral gown to the event. She claimed that her gown is still considered as punk because of the pink hue. Pink is apparently the color of punk according to Andre Bolton, Met curator. The lady knows her fashion and knows how to be striking so...

My Dream Wedding That Didn't Come True

What's your dream wedding or what was your dream wedding? Did it come true? Mine didn't.

My dream wedding was that of John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. The hush-hush ceremony took place in the First African Baptist Church at Cumberland Island, Georgia. The lovely bride and handsome groom said I do's amidst lighted candles. It was so romantic and intimate. There were only forty people invited!
I wanted something like that - to get married inside a very small shack in a remote area somewhere outside the city. I didn't where to find one. That was the main problem. It was a far-fetched idea and eccentric according to my father {God bless his soul}.
I don't have any qualms about my wedding though. It wasn't intimate {550+ guests}, but it was beautiful. I think what bums me the most is that I wanted JFK, Jr. to be my groom. Yeah, that's what's eating me up.

The unembellished but very elegant Narcisso Rodriguez silk crepe gown with bias cut Carolyn wore completely charmed me. The simplicity of the dress exaggerated her beauty. I love that she kept her hair in a low messy chignon. It added a relax feel to a formal attire.

Along with the billion others, I mourned the death of this famous couple. They were so young and so in love! It was such a tragic end to a great romance. This part, I don't envy. No siree!

Jamba Juice: Blending Jambalicious Drinks at Robinson's Magnolia

I blame Britney Spears for making me fall in love with Jamba Juice. Back in the early 2000 {pre K-Fed days I think}, she was almost always photographed grasping a huge cup of Jamba Juice. She looked like she was really enjoying the drink!

When went on a vacation to the States, I showed our friend the US Weekly photo of Britney Spears and asked him where we could get the drink she was holding. He brought us to the branch in Glendale. I had my first drink {Strawberries Wild}. The first of many.

Imagine our excitement when Jamba Juice opened it's first branch at BGC Central over a year ago. Though the area is a bit of a struggle to go to - considering the turtle traffic movement - we still visited the store twice a week at the very least. The opening of the branch at Robinson's Magnolia was highly anticipated by us. A more convenient way for us to get a smoothie fix.

Jamba came from the African word "jama" which means "to celebrate". The brand was built over exactly that. They celebrate good health. An avid cyclist, Kirk Perron, wanted to create a beverage that's healthy and replenishing after long bike rides. Along with his friends, Perron started the Juice Club, Inc. back in 1990. Sixteen years after, Services Acquisition Corp. International bought the company and changed the name to Jamba, Inc.

I like the store's overall color scheme. The avocado green is very relaxing and pleasing to the eyes. It is said that the color green brings a certain sense of calmness aside from wealth and good luck.

What's your favorite boost? Mine's immunity. I'm obsessed with boosting my immunity, probably because I beat it up too much.

It was just me and hubs who visited the Jamba Juice R. Mag the other night. It was right after we ate tons at Yabu. We still had some more room in our belly that's been aching to be filled by a smoothie on a scorching night.

My favorite has always been the Strawberries Wild and the Razzmatazz. I'm a creature of habit. I rarely, very rarely change my order. Hubs got the Chocolate Moo'd. The kids love that one too, as well as the Orange Dream Machine and the Banana Berry.

Have you checked how many calories are included in your drink? A friend of mine has this annoying habit of counting calories. It's sort of a transmissible habit. I've acquired a bit of it thanks to her, so now, once in awhile, I check the calories. Ergo, I'm annoying too.

It's not as low as one would expect, but it's at least healthier. Jamba Juice has an option called Make it Light. I haven't tried it yet. I don't any plans to as of now. I'm happy with the 370 calories that my Strawberries Wild is giving me. Why? Because I'm beautiful on the inside and that's what really matters. *wink*

10 To Die For Cottages

While most girls dream of living in castles with their prince, I fancy living in a cute cottage that houses hobbits, dwarfs, and a family of bears. They're cozier and has a lot more character than big, ol' fancy castles. I will forever feel young if I live in one! It's like living in your favorite storybook, a Thomas Kinkade painting, or living in a doll house!

I particularly like those with thatched roofs. I didn't think that this roofing method would last long, but apparently, it can last up to 50 years! They are natural insulators and are also environment-friendly.

My love for cottages is one of the reasons why I love going to places like Carmel, Ca. and Seaport Village in San Diego. I feel like I'm in a Brother's Grimm fairy tale every time I'm there. Such beautiful places to visit!

Below are ten of my most coveted cottages! Inspirations for my future vacation home somewhere near a river or a stream. Preferably with a very low pollution percentage. Zero pollution is a thing of the long gone past. *sigh*

B & T Mexican Kitchen San Juan

We learned about B & T Mexican Kitchen by chance one fine day in 2011. Hubs and I were looking for something at the building where the said restaurant is located. We're not really big on Mexican food, but once in a while, we get that strong craving that needs to be satisfied...fast. That came three nights ago, and so we found our way back to our favorite Mexican resto this side of the Metro.

There was a time when we got hooked on Ristras at J. Abad Santos. It was during the time when they were still new and was still serving really good food. The quality has changed drastically over the years. Some say that one of Ristras' partners is the owner of B & T. I don't have any confirmation on that yet, but I'll unleash my inner Nancy Drew to get the nitty-gritty on that one. If you're gonna base it on the concept and the dried chili pepper décor, there's a strong possibility that it's true. I suck at being Nancy Drew. My verdict is based on two weak evidences. Pffft.

Like what I stated above, the concept is very similar to Ristras. They have a chalkboard menu {which I like a lot} and is semi self-service. You choose which one you like on their extensive menu at the counter, pay for it, and wait for your order to be delivered on your table.

You can modify your order according to how you want it done. You can instruct the ones preparing your dish regarding how much or how little of the specific filling you want as they go.

The drinking glass jars are pretty cool, don't you think? I forgot to take a photo, however, of what went inside the jars. If you're interested, it's just a soda and a beer.

Mexican Wrap PhP 380

I got the Mexican Wrap with Carne Asada {steak} as the meat filling. It had some of the usual filling of a Tex-Mex wrap - shredded lettuce, cheese, ranchero, pico de gallo, sour cream, cilantro, and corn. Eventhough the steak was a little bit dry and tough that night, still, the whole thing turned out to be really good and very filling! It'll be great if they can come up with a Fil-Mex version of this. An adobo or beef tapa option on their menu.

Chicken Quesadilla PhP 330

The chicken quesadilla is also a good choice and one of our usual orders at B & T Mexican Kitchen. Their burger and pizza is really good too!

With the exception of the bell pepper, the quesadilla has the same filling as the Mexican Wrap. It was an explosion of good flavors! It was filled up thinly, but was delicious nonetheless. I also like their tortilla being extra crunchy. A good break from the usual pliable and chewy ones.

Functional and Budget-Friendly Mother's Day Gift Ideas

How many of you have ran out of ideas on what to give the queen of your life this Mother's Day? I share your dilemma. I have a hard time choosing gifts for my mother-in-law {my mom passed away a couple of years ago}. I keep stressing out and put a lot of pressure on myself to outdo the previous year's gift! Whether we or the gift receiver admits it or not, a gift is one of the best ways to express how much you value the person.

As a mom myself, I appreciate the gifts that are more functional than cute. I don't want something that'll just gather dirt in our house. I have a lot of those already. I don't know if I have a green thumb or not 'cause I haven't tried gardening. Some moms that I know, including my own mom and MIL are really good at gardening. I think that all mothers are sentimental. Maybe some are just more sentimental than the others. We can't help it! I think the hours of painful labor {I seriously thought that the pain would split by body into two} somehow altered a mother's body chemistry making her extra, extra sensitive. It's like a good kind of PTSD. But seriously, there's nothing more important for any mom than her kids. That's one of the main reasons why we get nostalgic sometimes. The main reason why I started drinking lemon water is because of its scent. I love the smell of lemon! My dispassion for drinking Vit. C supplements is the second reason. It gives me a bad case of gastric acid attack.
Though small in quantity, lemon is a good source of Vit. C, calcium, and potassium. It's natural and just about right. The body absorbs a specific percentage of vitamin C only {less than 100 mg for normal adults}. Taking 2000 mg {for example} of vitamin C daily won't do you any good. Most of it will just be excreted by your body. You'll just be producing an expensive urine.

Alkalizing Effect

Since lemon is considered acidic, you might be wondering why I drink lemon water when I'm prone to bouts of acid attack. Lemon water turns to alkaline once it is digested. It undergoes an oxidation process in our body that turns it into an alkaline.

Immunity Booster

Vitamin C in lemon is an immune system enhancer. Jethro Kloss stated in his book Back to Eden that lemons are anti-scorbutic - a term that means preventing or relieving scurvy. Scurvy is a disease due to insufficient vitamin C in the body. An immune system that is in good working condition will be able to defend your body from infections and diseases.

Balances Blood Sugar

It slows down the rate at which the body digests starch thereby keeping a balance in one's blood sugar. A controlled blood sugar level prevents insulin surge. An excess in insulin will make the body burn fat much harder.

A study back in 2008 has shown that the polyphenols in lemon suppresses weight gain and improves insulin resistance as well. In addition, lemon also contains pectin fiber that helps in reducing hunger pangs.

Economical Fashion: Sticking to Basics

"Spend on good quality pieces that transcends through time" was the most valuable fashion advice my mother gave me. The only way to achieve this is by sticking to the fashion basics.
Not everyone's wallet can keep up with fashion's constant changing state. There's always something new that comes out every day. I used to be quick in buying whatever the current hot product is, but when the novelty wears off, I move on to the next. I give away those that have been outdated and over time I realized that what remains in my closet are the basics. Those are the things that I'm investing on.
I like concept stores that specifically sell fashion basics such as MUJI! I like the products' neutral hues, high quality and environment friendly fabrics, and the practicality factor that's attached to them. Aside from being timeless, the other description I can think of regarding MUJI's clothes is this: user-friendly. They're very comfortable {still the number one factor for me} and are made from lightweight and breathable fabrics. The latter is very much an important factor when you live in a country with only two kinds of weather - very, very hot and wet! Their clothes are still wearable even during summer!
Let's break down the importance of sticking to fashion basics, shall we?

Seasonless and Timeless

Fashion basics are never outdated. They have a very strong staying power. You can confidently wear them any time of the year, any year of your life! This brings me to the next important reason...

Age Appropriate

They are not only timeless but ageless as well. A 17-year-old and a 70-year-old will equally look good wearing fashion staples. Whether we like it or not, wearing fluorescent daisy dukes or wedge sneaks has an age limit. You can go outlandish for a time, but you'll still go back to basics as you age.

Cheaper

Since fashion basics are seasonless, timeless, and age appropriate, they're highly economical in the long run. That's why I consider them an investment. Buy good quality pieces {not necessarily expensive} that will stand the test of time. Buy poor quality products only if you are rich. You can easily replace the substandard pieces once they get broken in a day or two after purchase. If you're not rich, buy the high quality ones. You'll save so much more!

7 Mommergency Kit Essentials

Moms are such proverbial worry warts. Our husbands can brand us out as nearing paranoia all they want, but being "concerned" is a very good thing. Okay, overly concerned.

Allzeit bereit {Be Prepared} is a motto that shouldn't just apply to scouts but to us moms as well. I always carry a Mommergency Kit inside my purse everyday. It's just a simple kit that contains essentials during simple not-so-fortunate circumstances. It is not similar to medical first aid kits. It's more of a my-kid-was-so-full-he-suddenly-vomited type of kit.

Of course, you're welcome to add whatever you think you need to your very own Mommergency Kit. Here are the basic essentials that I have on mine.

1. Adhesive Bandage

Minor scrapes and cuts are unavoidable, so make sure that you have a few strips of adhesive bandages in your Mommergency kit always. Extra smile points for character bandages. I'm an adhesive bandage hoarder! I have bandages that has my kids' favorite cartoon characters and some of my faves too!

2. Hand Sanitizer Spray

I'm never without this one. I carry two bottles of hand sanitizer sprays in my bag every single day since I was in college. I'm just really careful, that's all. *cough mysophobic cough* Plus, there are times when we don't have access to soap and water.

Choose something that's strong but gentle. CleanWell natural hand sanitizer is the kind that applies its potent factor to the target {germs}, not the user {kids}. It doesn't contain Benzalkonium Choride - a chemical that has been said to induce an asthma attack.

I prefer the spray kind than the gels and foams because they're easier to apply to certain objects such as toys. Unlike gels or foams, you don't need to wipe the toy off with a tissue before you let your kid touch it.

3. Pocket Tissue

Bodily discharges such as sweat, saliva, and all the things that only moms can talk about sans {or less, at least} the grosserific expression is unavoidable. Get a pocket tissue that's tough enough for juice or milk spills as well as hubs' sweaty pits. Never hurts to have some versatility factor to your tissue, right?

4. Wipes

Another multi-purpose product that should always be included in a mommergency kit are wipes. Aside from it's usual use, wipes are great for clean-ups and better for cleaning your kids noses when they have colds. The saline-infused ones, like Boogie Wipes, will prevent nose sores as well as help dissolve mucus. It's also great for removing make-up!

5. Thermometer Strips

I first included thermometer strips to my Mommergency kit when I gave birth to my youngest son. They gave me a couple of it at the hospital where he was born. I didn't think that it would be equal to digital thermometers in terms of accuracy, but I was wrong. It is as accurate but cuter!

6. Barf/Wee Bag

Be armed and ready for an occasional encore performance after a heavy meal or during a long trip somewhere. You can also use a barf/wee bag to put in a soiled shirt or whatever because you were too late in catching the said performance.

7. Snacks

This is especially helpful for those kids {and adults} who throw tantrums when they're hungry. Always keep a stash in your Mommergency Bag. Pick something that's not just filling and delicious, but nutritious as well. Yummy Earth Organic Gummy Bears is gluten-free and is packed with Vit. C!

Style Crush: Anya Ziourova

"The modern Russian icons are being born", Tatler Russia and Allure Russia fashion editor, Anya Ziourova, stated on an NY Times article. She should know. She is one.
Ziourova is part of the so called "Russian Fashion Pack" along with Ulyana Sergeenko, Vika Gazinskaya, Miroslava Duma, and Elena Perminova. My first encounter with this sartorial star's style was last year. I was searching for photos of the Balmain Laminated Nappa Skirt. A photo {first one below} of a woman emphasizing the goldness of the gorgeous skirt with a black Helen Yarmak fur coat, black tights, and black Balenciaga booties appeared. She made checking one's mobile phone look very chic!
This sartorial star is never boring. I'm actually drawn to her fashion versatility. I love how she plays with her style {but never outlandish} and pulls it off really well! She can be highly elegant one day and a boyish chic the next. In terms of looks, I think that she's a cross between Téa Leoni {Bad Boys days} and a young Sissy Spacek. What do you think?

Balboa Pizza, Pasta, and Steaks at Shangrila-Plaza Mall's East Wing

My seasonal obsession with pizza continues! I've mentioned the reason for this mild case of idée fixe on my previous post.

Hubs and I went to Shangrila-Plaza Mall a couple of days ago to watch Olympus Has Fallen and buy some stuff for the house and a few for me. It's been probably a year since we last saw a movie at Shang Cineplex. There's a valid reason why I don't like watching a movie there, but I couldn't remember what it was. I finally figured why after bought the tickets and Starbucks lattes: they don't allow food and beverage bought from other establishment aside from their snack bar. Never again.

Anyhoo, we checked the new East Wing of the mall for a restaurant that serves pizza before we watched the movie. We saw this restaurant called Balboa that has a signage subtitle of the dish I was craving for. They have ten pizza choices and they all looked promising!

I wondered why the very friendly restaurant greeter wore the same uniform {temporary} as the ladies at SumoSam. I soon found out {from her too} that Balboa is owned by the same group.

I fell in love with the round back chairs!

I vowed to drink more lemon water than my kidneys can handle. Lots of benefits, I tell you!

Spinach Artichoke PhP 249

I was rooting for the Pan-Seared Foie Gras, but hubs' buddy, high cholesterol, went against it. We were very much pleased with the Spinach Artichoke though. It's very rich and cheesy! I just wish that the toasted french bread weren't sliced too thin.

Prosciutto, Mushroom, and Arugula Pizza PhP 389

Each dish is good for two, including the pizza. You can stretch it out to up to three persons, but that's it. There's a perfect balance of ingredients in this pizza - salty of the prosciutto, smoky mushroom, bitter arugula, and creamy mozzarella. The thin crust is both crispy and chewy. Unlike Lombardi's version, Balboa's didn't scrimp on ingredients making the pizza more flavourful.

Truffle Mushroom Penne PhP 328

This dish originally comes with linguine, but I like penne better so we had it changed. The pasta sauce is filled with the light earthiness of the mushrooms and the truffle oil and the saltiness of the cheese. It's very tasty and satiating!

We're definitely going back to try more dishes! I'm gonna go for the Four Cheese Risotto and the Sinatra next time. I'm gonna bring the kids with me instead of dear 'ol hubs so that I can try the Pan-Seared Foie Gras!

Charlotte Olympia's Zodiac Sign Flats From the Cosmic Collection

Daft as it may sound to the highly logical beings, but I do believe in astrological signs. I'm not a real hardcore zodiac sign aficionado {e.g. checking my horoscope before I get out of bed everyday}, but I do check if an acquaintance's zodiac sign is compatible with mine - meaning if we're bound to be BFF's or Frenemies.

I didn't check the one for my mate because it was ruled by plain 'ol L-O-V-E. No amount of cons from the sun, moon, and the planets will keep me away from his love!!! "Big mistake...huge! I have to go shopping now..."

Anyhoo, this is not about my heart life, this about the flats that I'm very much coveting right now. That'll be a series of posts starting in, uhm, maybe five years time.

My whole Charlotte Olympia obsession started with the Kitty Flats. Looks like it won't end there since the brand recently released Zodiac Sign Flats From the Cosmic Collection. I love the heart-shaped design topped with zodiac charms! Extra point for the little zodiac sign symbol embroidered at the back. Picturing me wearing denim shorts, a plain white tee, and these flats right now! A great pair of shoes can do a lot of wonder for simple separates.

Pizza and Pasta at Lombardi's Robinson's Magnolia

The Big Bang Theory is the reason why hubs and I decided to have dinner at Lombardi's in Robinson's Magnolia two nights ago. Watching the series' reruns with my boys is the culprit for my pizza craving in general for the past week or so. Thursday night is pizza night for the lady and the geeks.

A few years ago, my husband and I got really hooked on HBO's Sopranos and had Italian food everyday for months! I even bought The Sopranos Family Cookbook by Artie Bucco.

Anyhoo, we pretty much got tired of ordering in from the pizza joints near our place, that's why we decided to ditch the series for awhile to have dinner at Lombardi's. Our boys weren't able to go with us because they're at grandma's house.

At first glance, the wood-fired oven is very much convincing. Upon close inspection, you'll see the exposed gas hose on the side. The pseudo wood-fired oven adds a nice touch still.

I was seriously craving for pizza with prosciutto {I heart!!!} that night, so I asked the waiter which one has it. He recommended one of the Pizza Al Forno from the Chef's Specials: Quattro Salumi. Aside from the basic ingredients, such as the fior de latte and the sauce, the pizza is topped with salami, prosciutto, and arugula.

Quattro Salumi PhP 500

Though they scrimped a bit on the toppings, I say, taste-wise, the pizza is really good. The subtle taste of the mozzarella blended perfectly with the saltiness of the prosciutto and the smoky flavor of the salami. Considering the small amount, I barely tasted the arugula. True to its Neapolitan form, the crust is thin and crunchy, but still maintains an ounce of chewiness.

Ravioli di Carne PhP 480

The dishes at Lombardi's are good for sharing, so it's better if you go there with a group so that you can try a lot of what's in their menu. We only got two during this visit. It was filling enough for my husband and I.

Lombardi's has both fresh and dried pasta on their menu. Of course, if there's a choice such as this one being offered, it's a no-brainer to choose the former. It's just different...for me at least. The Ravioli di Carne proved to be a winner for me, again, flavor-wise. The meat filling is juicy and savory. I like that the tomato sauce was light and not too acetic.

Lombardi's is opening a branch at the Shangri-Mall's East Wing soon. We're definitely gonna visit that one. They do serve good food and the service is equally praiseworthy.
