Adam “MCA” Yauch was a founding member of the Beastie Boys and one of the pioneers of rap and rap-hybrid music. A few years ago, he announced that he was being treated for cancer and it’s likely contributed to his death at age 47 on May 4th.

We at the Mosh Pit have been huge fans of the Beastie Boys since they taught us to fight for our right to party many moons ago.

Rest In Peace, sir.

Dear Thrasher,

I bet you will be surprised to know that I got you a Christmas gift this year from Japan. Actually I bought the item shown below:

Look closer, the item circled is the one I bought:

I ate from the new one, sent you the used ones as-is.

I am sorry that I did not send it earlier, I was getting fitted for my new 9-toed socks, and further sorry that it will take another 6-8 weeks to arrive by sea mail. I ate some of one of the bottles, but I am sure you can understand. Since Mayonnaise is your favorite condiment, I thought this was the perfect gift from the east!

George Lucas may have written and directed “Star Wars” but the look of that universe (and not surprisingly the similarly designed Battlestar Galactica series) were from the creative imagination of legendary concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.

McQuarrie’s early work included artwork for CBS news coverage of the Apollo program. He later went on to design … pretty much every spaceship from the late 70s and early 80s movies except for the “Alien” series. He also was the concept artist for “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (i.e. CREATED Indiana Jones) and zillions of other films we all know and love. This makes him the origin of every little boy’s space adventure fantasies from 1977-1990. THAT puts him in the cool hall of fame and awards him a place in our Memorial.

He has not worked in many years and has since passed the mantle of design to many other notable movie designers, but his influence on the way we see and think abut the world and fantasy will live on forever.

Broke the Cross-country speed record in a plane designed and used mostly for ground-attack.
Married the woman of HIS dreams despite her “imperfections” (which are insignificant because she was a hottie so I don’t blame him…)
Was a Marine corps rifleman AND Aviator (every Marine is a rifleman and every
Marine aviator must land on carriers to qualify…both inherently manly)
Was a U.S. Senator for 23 years before he decided to go back to his old job
Stayed faithful to his wife and kids as long as he has lived (still kicking ass at 90)
Was one of the original Mercury 7
Named his spacecraft after his love and devotion to his comrades-in-arms (Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton)
Strapped himself to A BALLISTIC MISSILE KNOWN TO EXPLODE ON IGNITION
Was the ultimate Cold Warrior, who, along with Neil and Buzz, and the crew of Apollo 13 (later editions), showed the world that America has what it takes and when the call comes… the minutemen still survive
Is actually a totally cool guy in real life.
Decided that over 70 was a good time go back into space aboard a spacecraft that was known to kill all aboard.

(probably there are planetoids that orbit his balls and not the sun… )

The list of men and women who have traveled into space is over 100, but John Glenn, on the 50th anneversary of his historic flight, should not be forgotten.

The Battle of New Orleans took place on January 8, 1815 and was the final major battle of the War of 1812. American forces, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British Army intent on seizing New Orleans and the vast territory the United States had acquired with the Louisiana Purchase. The Treaty of Ghent had been signed on December 24, 1814, but news of the peace would not reach the combatants until February. The battle is widely regarded as the greatest American land victory of the war. (Wikipedia)
