One of the Kings of Science Fiction: Ray Bradbury

We Lost Ray Bradbury this week. What can we say other than he was one of the fathers of GOOD Science Fiction, along with slightly older contemporary notables Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, and older George Orwell. Like these other giants, he was influential in the bringing of science to life, with one of his greatest monuments being his consultancy on the spherical “Spaceship Earth” which is the iconic symbol of Disney’s Epcot Center.

However, and most obviously, Bradbury’s writing is at the core of his life’s importance and as required reading in many secondary and post-secondary education programs worldwide, he is a long-standing cultural icon. In addition to Fahrenheit 451 Bradbury wrote a huge number of sci-fi and horror works including The Martian Chronicles, which are regarded more as works of fantasy, stories in Tales From the Crypt and countless other famous works. According to the wiki link above he produced 27 novels and over 600 short stories. He was respected and admired by his contemporary authors and even noted scientists such as Carl Sagan.

Bradbury remained active until as recently as last month. Let us honor his passing by picking up a copy of one of his classics, and reading it with thought and understanding, and see what sci-fi can truly be.

After clearing the feces from my undergarments, I went out and purchased all the items they recommended and made my emergency plan. I added a fire axe to the toolkit since it seems effective in games and movies.

On a lighter note the ArmA 2 “DayZ” Zombie Apocalypse mod rocks if you are patient in FPS games. ;)

I am sorry that I did not send it earlier, I was getting fitted for my new 9-toed socks, and further sorry that it will take another 6-8 weeks to arrive by sea mail. I ate some of one of the bottles, but I am sure you can understand. Since Mayonnaise is your favorite condiment, I thought this was the perfect gift from the east!

George Lucas may have written and directed “Star Wars” but the look of that universe (and not surprisingly the similarly designed Battlestar Galactica series) were from the creative imagination of legendary concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.

McQuarrie’s early work included artwork for CBS news coverage of the Apollo program. He later went on to design … pretty much every spaceship from the late 70s and early 80s movies except for the “Alien” series. He also was the concept artist for “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (i.e. CREATED Indiana Jones) and zillions of other films we all know and love. This makes him the origin of every little boy’s space adventure fantasies from 1977-1990. THAT puts him in the cool hall of fame and awards him a place in our Memorial.

He has not worked in many years and has since passed the mantle of design to many other notable movie designers, but his influence on the way we see and think abut the world and fantasy will live on forever.

1. Broke the Cross-country speed record in a plane designed and used mostly for ground-attack.
2. Married the woman of HIS dreams despite her “imperfections” (which are insignificant because she was a hottie so I don’t blame him…)
3. Was a Marine corps rifleman AND Aviator (every Marine is a rifleman and every
   Marine aviator must land on carriers to qualify…both inherently manly)
4. Was a U.S. Senator for 23 years before he decided to go back to his old job
5. Stayed faithful to his wife and kids as long as he has lived (still kicking ass at 90)
6. Was one of the original Mercury 7
7. Named his spacecraft after his love and devotion to his comrades-in-arms (Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton)
8. Strapped himself to A BALLISTIC MISSILE KNOWN TO EXPLODE ON IGNITION
9. Was the ultimate Cold Warrior, who, along with Neil and Buzz, and the crew of Apollo 13 (later editions), showed the world that America has what it takes and when the call comes… the minutemen still survive
10. Is actually a totally cool guy in real life.
11. Decided that over 70 was a good time go back into space aboard a spacecraft that was known to kill all aboard.

(probably there are planetoids that orbit his balls and not the sun… )

The list of men and women who have traveled into space is over 100, but John Glenn, on the 50th anneversary of his historic flight, should not be forgotten.
