In a year that social media continued to stamp its presence as a now integral part of modern society, 2013 saw a particular rise in “upworthy-esque” sites, solely committed to grabbing the world’s distraction traffic at any chance they can get.

The online travel scene was no stranger to this, and while it continues to harbour a lot of yawn-worthy material, there is no question that it also produces some of the world’s best online content.

Spending a fair chunk of time in front of a computer in different parts of the world this year, here are a few blogs, sites and social media handles that stood out as a traveller. I can only recommend keeping them on your radar in 2014 also.

_____________

Yomadic

Photo Credit: Nate Roberts – yomadic.com

Ask me what my favourite travel blog is and I wont hesitate in directing you to the writings and photography of fellow Aussie, Nate Roberts. I first came across Nate’s work when he was documenting his travels through Iran, a destination I’ve been fascinated with for a few years now. Since then I’ve regularly visited his site and vicariously travelled with him through some of Eastern Europe and Asia Minor’s most unique and fascinating destinations.

It doesn’t look like Nate’s travels are easing up any time soon so definitely keep an eye on his work through 2014.

Bedouin Writer

Spending a good chunk of this year living in Berlin, I had the pleasure of becoming personal friends with Gesa Neitzel, author of Bedouin Writer.

Photo Credit: Gesa Neitzel – bedouinwriter.com

I was a fan of Gesa’s writing before I had met her, so you can be assured there is no bias here (but for the record, over hearing her proclaim that she would never date a man shorter than her was the moment when all my dreams and ambitions for a life in Berlin came crashing down…).

Gesa is a gifted storyteller, and I have no doubt she will accomplish her long term goal of being a successful career writer. While originally a dual-language blog, I have noticed Gesa’s recent content has been only in her native German. Either way, her writing is still worth reading, even if it’s through Google Chrome’s Auto translate feature…

The Paper Planes Blog

I had the pleasure of meeting Alana Morgan of the Paper Planes blog ealier in 2013 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Anyone who knows me well, knows the special place that Chiang Mai holds in my heart so it is on a regular basis that The Paper Planes blog has me returning to my former expat life in this great city of Northern Thailand.

Funky content and photo’s, ch-ch-ch-check it out yo…

Wartard

Not a travel blog as such, but definitely a site I enjoy whenever it is updated.

As a fan of political debate surrounding international conflict, Wartard’s ingenious commical writing brilliantly highlights how retarded humanity can become in all matters to do with war.

I cant describe it – have a read and you’ll get what I mean (plus you’ll also understand why it takes him so long to release each post)

Let’s Travel Somewhere

Photo Credit: Nisa Maier – cookiesound.com

A visual project started by photographer Nisa Maier, Let’s Travel Somewhere will leave you either wanting to travel deeper into the destinations you visit or take up photography but most likely both of those…

On Let’s Travel Somewhere, Nisa allows talented photographers to show off this amazing world through their camera’s lenses…

@ramijamesaoun

Instagram… one of my favourite social media apps. While it has largely highlighted humanity’s down fall with the likes of an unforeseen rise in the amount of bathroom mirror selfies, some bright lights continue to shine through on this platform.

If you know me well, you will most likely know that Lebanon is one of my favourite places that I have had the pleasure of traveling to. I also have a great appreciation for great architecture – something Lebanon is surprisingly full of. @ramijamesauon documents both Lebanon’s incredible vista’s as well as its unique architectural aspects.

WillPeach.com

A mentor turned friend, I can personally account to the fact that 2013 was a trying year for the travel blogging community’s most controversial son.

I have appreciated Will’s complete honesty and have taken great admiration in watching him become more and more open to the randomness of life. A true master of the written word, watching his work take a turn from travel related commentary to its now philosophical tone, I recommend keeping an eye on his dynamic art as it continues to develop and inspire into 2014…

Do You Yoga

In a year of hard lessons, one of the great blessings of this year personally was discovering yoga.

DoYouYga.com’s founder Andy Zoltan became one of my best mates during my stint in Berlin and his yoga site opened up a rather intimidating scene fro a middle-aged white male…

DoYouYoga.com created a free youtube series called the “30 Day Yoga Challenge” with my newest internet crush, Erin Motz. A great resource for those wanting to stay healthy while on the move…

It was also inspiring to hear that after the success of the 30 day yoga challenge, DoYouYoga.com’s recent kickstarter project to launch an online yoga school and community reached its target within 8 hours!

Namaste bitches…

RugbyDump.com

If you aren’t a rugby fan, I pity the fool… Living in football (round type) heartland of central Europe, televised rugby was hard to come by. Rugby Dump allowed this travelling rugby fan to stay up to date with all the highlights from the world’s major fixtures but most importantly, clips of the games biggest hits…

You know Jesus played rugby right?

Spartan Traveler

Spartan Traveler is the running documentary of Clayton’s pursuit of a location independent lifestyle.

His post on recovering from serious injury was one of the single most inspiring posts I read this year. Six months later I am on the path of recovery and regaining full range of motion of a two year old injury, after Clayton’s post had me realising that living with pain doesn’t have to be the norm.

I’m keen to see where 2014 takes him.

Gapelia.com

The Most Alive had the honour of being one of Gapelia’s featured blogs this year.

Still very much a work in progress, Gapelia is building a platform that exists to champion the cause of quality story telling, art and intellectual discussion.

2014 will see their work come further into fruition, definitely a space you would want to be watching…

____________

2013 was a year like no other and saw The Most Alive take some new directions.

The main one being it move from a running account of my personal travels, to the introduction of contributors Hannah Watkins and Adam Bennett, thus becoming more of an open source of information and inspiration to backpackers and independent travellers.

2014 will see TMA continue down this path and in the coming weeks, we will be announcing more contributors who will be joining the TMA, bringing our audience more engaging and inspiring storytelling, tips and images from around the world.

To our readers – thanks for being apart of this blog, we hope you have enjoyed its content as much as we have enjoyed sharing it and we look forward to sharing the life changing experiences that only travel can bring with you further into 2014.

“One crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name.”

With many of Italy’s major city’s being the main drawcard for visitors keen to explore the country’s colourful history, Emilia Romagna’s Apennine region offers a truly peaceful insight into Italy’s country life.

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of visiting Emilia Romagna as part of the regions Blogville project.

After a few days of wandering the streets of the region’s capital, Bologna, I was looking forward to spending a few days exploring what else the region has to offer its visitors. Thanks to Trekking Italy, my friend Conni from Planet Backpack, and I were treated to a memorable cycling and cultural experience.

Amongst all the sights and experiences it was the simple relaxation that came from feeling like there was literally no body around for miles that was the highlight for me.

To get a taste of how our two days there went down, I put together a quick vid…

I arrived in Belgrade early one morning, starved, half asleep and armed only with my trusty rucksack, and a battered old guidebook. While my arrival in Belgrade was definitely lacking in style, I made up for it with the excitement that I had accumulated since boarding the overnight bus from Croatia fifteen hours previously. I had hardly slept, having heard so much about Europe’s ‘city that never sleeps’ from fellow travellers. I was so keen to discover it for myself.

It was mid September and the wind chill cut right through me as I weaved my way through throngs of people wrapped up in their daily commute. For a while I wandered through busy streets avoiding the hawkers, trailing their carts before one of Belgrade’s most infamous sights stopped me in my tracks…

Belgrade’s most infamous sights stopped me in my tracks...
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

Not Your Regular Historical Sites

The ruins of the former Police and Army Headquarters stands woefully with its side ripped open.

Bombed during the NATO raids in 1999 the headquarters act as a stark reminder of the violence that has occurred here. For the time being, the state has decided that the headquarters and other buildings from across the city that have been ruined from the bombing, will be left alone. For many, they act as a stark reminder of the atrocities that claimed the lives of so many local civilians.

Whilst exploring Belgrade’s upper and lower town, I visited Kalemegdan Park and Fortress, which proved to be a highlight of my trip.

Once a fortified camp built by the Romans it was subsequently rebuilt time and time again by conquering empires. Those exploring the fortress will also see the Victor Monument, erected in celebration of Balkan War victories during the early 20th century and be treated to stunning views of the Sava and Danube River and the modern district of Belgrade. While exploring the fortress, I also ventured into Belgrade’s War Museum that gives a devastatingly detailed account of Nazi occupation and features artefacts from the 1999 NATO bombing, including parts of a US F-16 fighter jet and the uniform of its pilot.

And The Food?

Situated a few minutes walk from Kalemegdan Park, ‘?’ (Pronounced Question Mark) is Serbia’s oldest restaurant. Featuring classic Serbian dishes influenced by Mediterranean, Greek and Turkish gastronomy, I enjoyed Vodenicarska Muckalica, a beef and vegetable stew inside a hollowed out loaf of bread as young bulls sex glands were sadly off the menu for the day (damn!). The intimate, time-honoured setting of Question Mark gives a true Serbian experience and is guaranteed to be the culinary high point of a trip to Belgrade.

______________

With Sunsets to kill, miles of stunning sandy beaches and surf that even the pros are dying to get amongst, Nicaragua’s San Juan Del Sur (SJDS) is fast becoming one of Central America’s leading hot spot destinations.

Popular AND Affordable!

Despite being one of the most visited locations in Nicaragua, its prices are unbelievable.

The local expat crowd and most other seasoned travellers I spoke to all agree that San Juan Del Sur is the Costa Rica of 10-20 years ago. It still has an organic feel that hasn’t seen it become as Americanised as places such as Costa Rica. The prices for food, accommodation and drinks here are definitely still within the bracket one would typically expect for Central America.

"San Juan Del Sur is the Costa Rica of 10-20 years ago"
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

The Drawcard: Its Surf…

This town is an absolute surfing hot spot.

You are guaranteed to find a healthy sized crowd of international backpackers full of surf obsessed travellers making for the days and nights to be as equally fun as each other.

The weekend that I was in San Juan just happened to coincide with a surfing competition. It was great to be apart of all the hype which involved surfing legends and enthusiasts from both Nicaragua and the rest of the world. Its safe to say it made for interesting nights out in this small coastal town…

Boasting 14 beautiful surf spots that are all within a taxi or jeep ride away, San Juan really is all about the sun and the surf. Most surf shops or hostels do daily runs to all open beaches, It’s just a matter of hiring a board and putting your name down at your choice of beach location. It was great spending the week re-discovering my love for surfing and enjoying the large breaks and long shore lines.

The weather on the pacific side of Central America was far better then the Caribbean side, boasting continually clear blue skies, long days and warm nights. It is simply a little bit of heaven on earth.

For The Ladies…

For the ladies who aren’t into the surf scene, SJDS can work for you also.

Not only are there ladies nights most evenings with free drinks, there are also beautiful resorts that open up their facilities to the public for around $5 per day. I took advantage of this a couple of the days that I was there. One place, Pelican Eyes Resort boasts some of the best views and sunsets in SJDS and has pools, restaurants, bars and massage facilities that can be used all day if making the 15-20 min drive out to the surf beaches isn’t your thing.

What became one of my favourite things to do in SJDS was at the beginning of each evening, eat at one of the cheap taco stops. Here you are always bound to meet people from around the world. The $2 street margaritas, made by keen surfers trying to fund their nomad lifestyles, aren’t too bad either. One thing Nicaragua has definitely got right is its food. I have no complaints about any anything I ate during my whole time in the country.

_____________

There seems to always be interesting stories to coming out of SJDS. It being such a great place to hang out and enjoy the summer vibes is probably the defining reason for this. Be careful though, because it’s easy to get stuck with the great people, weather and the love of surfing in the air.

Escaping Russia wasn’t difficult with over 10,000 roubles stuffed into my hat…

I queued up, was patted down and handed over my passport to the irritable customs officials. All the while I was constantly wondering what would happen if they asked me to take my hat off.At the time, I assumed they would think it was drug money and drag me kicking and screaming to a small room where dignity would surely say goodbye forever. How would I explain that actually, the money was from the gig I’d played in a small, crowded St. Petersburg bar just a few hours ago?

I was, to say the least, drunk and exhausted. Thankfully my dignity remained untarnished and I made it into Estonia unmolested – Roubles intact.

Tallinn City Centre and Food

It was 4am by the time I arrived at a bus stop three miles outside of the city centre of Estonia’s capital, Tallinn. Walking along the street, white from the winter snowfall I managed to find a bistro to hole up in until I was due to meet Martin, my contact in Estonia. The bistro was empty apart from a despondent waitress who sighed at me as I rifled through my pockets to find change for a coffee. She almost threw a tantrum when I plucked up the courage to order a pizza.

Four hours later I met the nervous but generous Martin. We made our way by tram to the squat where I was able to curl up on an old sofa and catch up on some well-earned sleep. This was day five of my European tour. Just me, an acoustic guitar and what was to be a group of Estonian punks whose questionable anarchist views didn’t quite match up to the intelligence of Noam Chomsky or Naomi Klein.

Martin and I eventually ventured into Tallinn’s old town, a wonderful historic part of the city complete with medieval buildings, unique bars and restaurants.

A Christmas market was in full swing, selling an assortment of hand carved gifts and “Hõõgvein”, the local mulled wine. Martin gave me an insight into Tallinn’s rich history, parting legends and fun facts along the way.

Eager to discover Estonian food we chose to overindulge ourselves at ‘Kuldse Notsu’ Kőrts’ a restaurant in the bustling town square where I enjoyed a delectable pork platter that was large enough for two. Martin, who explained he was a vegan after I’d ordered – leaving me feeling particularly sheepish – chose a vegetable soup, the only thing remotely suitable on the menu.

To suggest that Estonian food is meat centric is an understatement. Like many countries who once lived under Soviet rule, even the bread rolls have bacon inside them – vegetarians beware. Despite the dietary hitch, the food was fantastic particularly for carnivores.

Squatting-Life

"I felt a rush of appreciation for the Estonian punk scene"
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

The gig took place on the top floor of a disused factory in the middle of an industrial estate.

Local punks began arriving through the door complete with Mohawks and safety pins. In comparison to the Russian audiences, this was rather intimidating. Despite their appearance I could not have received a warmer welcome. The gig was fantastic, 40 minutes of sing-alongs and anarcho-punk fuelled fun.

I felt a rush of appreciation for the Estonian punk scene.

Nightlife

Returning to the old town with the punks from the gig Tallinn’s nightlife was raucous. Teeming with young people, dancing, drinking and laughing we visited a few bohemian-style bars, all of which played western rock music and served a wide selection of local beers. The fog began to fall and my memory becomes a little fuzzy…

Without doubt Tallinn is a fascinating destination. Bursting with 800 years of historical sights and attractions, most notably Tallinn’s old town walking tour, where visitors learn from the Nazi occupation all the way back to the crusading knights of the Teutonic Order during the 13th century.

______________

Often overlooked by many backpackers in Europe, the city is well worth a visit and an exceptional example of a medieval city persevered through time.

Since the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, food has had a strong European influence giving the food a richer quality. Incorporating local spices and fresh ingredients foods such as the Brazilian ‘Pamonha’, Argentinean ‘Chipirones a la plancha’ and Peruvian ‘Ceviche’, all have European influence whilst potatoes, tomatoes, lima beans, avocados and numerous kinds of peppers and chillies were all first cultivated in South America. It would be an understatement to suggest that almost every backpacker who visits South America soon falls in love with the gastronomic delights available.

Peru

Perhaps the most famous delicacies across the continent is the Peruvian ‘Cuy’. Known to the West as Guinea Pig, Cuy is the national dish of Peru. Often compared to rabbit or wild fowl, it originated from the Inca civilisation and is usually baked or barbecued whole and served with rice and a spicy sauce. A surprisingly tasty treat, it is frequently found in the restaurants of Lima, Peru’s bustling capital. Other Peruvian delicacies include Ceviche, a seafood dish cooked with citrus juice and aji pepper. Often served up with corn or sweet potatoes – the perfect meal to end a days hiking in the Andes.

Brazil

There are many different and diverse Brazilian delicacies; it’s hard to choose one, which is considered to be the best although those who enjoy stiff drink may find Brazil is their spiritual home. Cachaca, a high proof alcoholic beverage produced from sugar cane, is available in Brazil and certain regions of South America. However, it has been said to produce a hangover capable of incapacitating even the hardiest of drinkers!

Brazil’s street food can be just as exciting as the previous night’s Cachaca drinking. Feijoada, a popular dish in Rio de Janeiro is a bean dish mixed with various meats usually beef. A demonstration of Brazilian cooking and culture, it’s traditionally served with peppers, rice, and occasionally cassava, a common South American ingredient similar to a potato. Produced in Brazil and Paraguay, cassava often finds it’s way into many South American dishes boiled, mashed or used as dumplings in stews.

Argentina

Ranging from rib eye steaks to exotic fish dishes such as ‘Chipirones a la plancha’, baby squid served with corn, the native foods of Argentina are typically not suitable for vegetarians. Street vendors can be found all over Buenos Aires selling a myriad of tasty local delicacies. Whilst exploring Buenos Aires, backpackers should look out for vendors selling Bondiola, a traditional Argentinean version of a pork sandwich, but so better. The pork’s rich, flavoursome taste is enough to send any traveller, perhaps even a vegetarian back for seconds.

______________

South American food is as varied as it is exciting. Whilst exploring the continent travellers will discover a cuisine shaped by its history and bursting with flavour. For the best food, backpackers should try and eat in the café’s with locals avoiding, if possible, the restaurants aimed at tourists. Finding street food from vendors is the cheapest way to experience local culture and often by far the most exciting.

Throughout this feature series on the Cappadocia region of Turkey, the core attribute linking each post has, without a doubt, been the incredibly unique landscape that is found here.

While much of the attractions found in these parts of Turkey highlight the unique interaction that has evolved between man and the land here, a simple walking tour through the natural rock formations of ‘love valley’ provided one of the most comical travel experiences I’ve had to date.

_____________

Arriving in Cappadocia’s unofficial backpacker hub town of Goreme, you can quickly get overwhelmed with the huge amount on offer to do in the region – especially if you are on a restricted budget and time schedule.

While I preferred spending much of my time and money on tours that explored the more historical aspects of Cappadocia, the one that stood out the most for me was a simple walking tour that went through a number of valleys that surround Goreme.

My partner in crime at the time, Mick, and I where joined by a Dutch family and few other random travellers as we followed our hostel’s son on the budget friendly walking tour.

The tour zigzagged through a number of gorges whose colours were ever changing and giving justification to their appropriately assigned names; ‘rose valley’, ‘honeycomb valley’… you get the picture…

At about the halfway point, we came across one of Cappadocia’s trademark “Fairy Chimney” villages, that was slowly being engulfed by establishments belonging to the hospitality industry but in saying that, it definitely had a lot more of a unique vibe to it than Goreme.

From the random village, we made our way back into a valley that looked no different to the other we had spent the better part of the last hour walking through.

Inspiration to keep interest was starting to linger…

We turned a bend and it was there that all lively aspects of our artistic imaginations became erect…

LIKE A MASSIVE STONE PENIS! … or asparagus…

Either way, mick and I went from having the mindset of sensible young adults to that of pre-pubescent adolescents within seconds of spotting the towering schlongs.

An unashamed amount of ‘selfies’ quickly followed as we (awkwardly including the mother of the Dutch family) posed in various compromising positions.

Eventually Mick and I noticed we were alone and had been so for quite a few minutes. We scrambled through to the other side of the valley to find our tour group huddled around an old man making fresh orange juice.

The whole group burst into laughter at the site of us and upon our reaction of “whaaaaat!?”, they notified us that “we could hear you two giggling like a couple of school girls the whole way through that place!”

Guilty as charged…

And so it is on the travellers path… monstrous stone formations that are uncannily familiar with the nether regions of the male anatomy, would become a travel highlight…

______________

*Most Hostels and Guest Houses in Goreme offer the Love Valley walking tours for around 15TL.

*The tour takes about 3-4 hours on foot on flat terrain.

*Make sure your hostel organises to pick you up in a vehicle at the end as well.

Have you been to a place where the natural landscape or culture takes on a somewhat ‘comical’ aspect? We’d love to hear in the discussions below!

With widespread poverty across many parts of South America, a helping hand is regularly welcomed by many non-profit aid services and charities that are working hard to improve the lives of the people of South America.

Photo: Hannah Watkins

An appealing venture, volunteering is often undertaken by numerous individuals including those taking a well earned career break, backpackers or those who are simply looking to do their part.

Depending on preferences, volunteers in South America can lend a hand with a range of different activities from teaching English, applying Medicine and Equine Therapy skills in Argentina, to contributing to the conservation of the Galapagos Islands ecosystem in Ecuador.

Arranging volunteering through companies

There are plenty of companies littered across the Internet who offer volunteering opportunities, however many usually come at a high price. To many naïve and unsuspecting travellers, paying a large sum of money to volunteer and lend a hand to those less fortunate is seen as standard procedure, so they cough up much of their budget without giving much thought to where their hard earned money is spent.

...it’s becoming increasingly simple and popular to find volunteering placements yourself.
Click To Tweet - Powered By CoSchedule

For those who can afford it, there are bonuses to booking your volunteering experience through travel companies. Would be volunteers will not only be guaranteed a placement volunteering in your chosen area, many also offer 24hr support throughout their volunteering experience, which can be particularly useful with language barriers. Transport from the airport, accommodation and food is usually also usually pre arranged so volunteers need not worry about the intricate details of their trip, they simply have to book the flights!

Typically, it’s of hot debate among travellers as to whether these companies who effectively make a profit from the paying volunteers are actually helping or hindering the issue of poverty in South America and the rest of the world. But if you can afford to pay the fees, it could potentially make your experience a whole lot easier.

Finding Volunteer work yourself

Unfortunately, most travellers scarcely have the space in their budgets to warrant a volunteering placement through one of these companies. Thankfully with the help of the Internet and the 21st century it’s becoming increasingly simple and popular to find volunteering placements yourself. There are plenty of forums and websites such as the Lonely Planet Thorntree Forum, where budding volunteers can exchange advice on where’s best to find your own unique volunteering opportunities.

Photo: Hannah Watkins

Many well seasoned volunteers, often suggest that preparation is the key to a successful volunteer placement. A good volunteer needs to try and be as effective as possible and simple tasks such as learning basic Spanish (or Portuguese if you’re visiting Brazil) before you leave for South America will ensure that you learn quickly and are a valuable member of a team.

It’s also a good bet to do plenty of research online reading up on what the different volunteer programs do for their local communities. Potential volunteers also need to guarantee they have their relevant jabs and vaccinations organised before leaving for Latin America. Choosing the correct type of travel insurance is also vital for all volunteers as standard backpackers insurance will not cover you if you are injured whilst undertaking hard manual labour.

_______________

Aside from enriching the lives of those who live in the communities you’re working in, volunteering in South America (or anywhere in the world for that matter) can be a great addition to a resume and a fantastic way to obtaining unique life skills. Volunteering can be suitable for anyone from semi-experienced backpackers in their early twenties to those with more life experience. All that is required is a good attitude, a willingness to learn new skills, get out of your comfort zone and meet new people.

“Room For Travel” is a weekly live stream on Google+ where experienced travellers discuss tips and experiences on a given travel related topic. Seeing as the latest episode was falling on the 4th of July, we decided to talk all things travel in the USA.

Being both large and incredibly diverse, the USA remains as one of the most sought after tourist destinations. As the discussion shows, its hard to match the USA’s ability to offer such a wide range of experiences for all types of travellers.

Topics Discussed

Transport (1:40): Getting to and from the USA as well as what are the best methods to travel around the country internally.

One of Berlin’s best aspects is the amount of historical, abandoned buildings scattered through out the city.

Probably one of the best examples of this, is the abandoned hospital complex found on Berlin’s outskirts at Beelitz-Heilstätten.

The hospital was built in 1898 but quickly became a hospital for injured soldiers during WWI, even housing Adolf Hitler during this time.

Beelitz eventually became a Soviet military hospital after the Second World War and eventually became abandoned after the Soviets left the site in 1995.

Today, the huge complex remains relatively open for people to get into and explore at their own desire. The place is nothing short of a photographers dream…

I captured this picture in the hallway of the Surgery Pavilion.
