I have a huge crush on the the Charlie Brown Christmas tree:

Each year while other families search for the biggest, widest, greenest, most proportioned tree...I search for the cutest, most-in-need-of-love, and obviously-not-quite-right-tree . My family is *not* completely amused by my search for the perfect Charlie Brown Christmas tree and we usually settle for a compromise of a small, but lovely tree.

Damn Facebook Games

Last week I started playing Ravenwood Fair on Facebook. It was weird for me because I'd already played Cafe World, started a small farm on Farmville, and dug for treasure on Treasure Isle. I even did the whole Mafia Wars and Hotel City thing...but that was a looong time ago. And I had figured out pretty early on that logging onto those games and going "click-click-click" and asking for energy packs was a complete waste of my time - and boring...just sayin'.

So why the renewed interest in a completely moronic game? (By moronic I mean unthinking and unchallenging - not that people who play the games are morons - because then I would be calling myself a moron...)

It was because by playing Ravenwood Fair I was feeling successful. It was something I could *actually* do. I could "click-click-click" and chop down a bunch of trees. I could wack a Domovio, collect tree sap, construct food carts, and build games for my fair visitors. I watched my 'fun meter' rise and got an increase in visitors. And maybe...eventually...if I worked hard enough at my fair...there would be a wedding! (Unless I was away from my fair too long, then my fair would be over grown with Dark Roots and I'd have to spend most of my valuable energy digging them out.)

Every where else in my life where I was feeling unsucsessful was being numbed by this damn Facebook game. I quit today. I let it go. Ravenswood Fair ended up like all the other Facebook games I've played - on the blocked list.

I guess I'll spend those few extra moments being a more successful me and doing something productive like working on my new blog layout, cooking, or playing Rock Band.

*Oh, when I said "ended up like all the other Facebook games I've played - on the block list", that didn't include Scrabble. If you want to play Facebook Scrabble with me, I'm all game!

Things to Try, er Not...

As you know, I'm all about trying new things and expanding my belief system. This weekend I tried several new things.

The first thing I tried was dying my hair with Kool-Aid. I thought it would be a great way to save money, save Natron time, AND it would just be pretty cool to say that I dye my hair with Kool-Aid.

When coloring ones hair there are a few simple rules you should follow:

Have clean up items handy.

Wear old clothes that you wouldn't mind wrecking.

Have someone else to it for you.

Do a test strand.

Me? Oh, I did none of the above. I ruined one of my favorite shirts, ended up in the bathtub, naked with Kool-Aid running down my back and splattering the shower walls, *and* I even have a head full of pukish, brownish, pinkish hair...I made an appointment with Natron on Wednesday night to fix it for me :)

Dress Up

My step-daughter, The Artist, had a friend over last night. At fifteen years old, they played dress up and had a photo shoot of themselves - which will more then likely end up on Facebook. I walked into the bathroom sometime during the evening and this is what I found:

It brought me back to a birthday party of mine long, long, really long ago. I had a few friends over and we dressed up as punk rockers. We had wild clothes, heavy make-up, and even temporary, crazy, colors for our hair. My friends and I even went ~~out in public~~ across the street to the grocery store after we were all made up.

Which makes me think: Nature vs. Nurture?

I keep thinking that I'd really like to take some cooking classes, but then I make a dinner like the one I made tonight and I figure there really isn't any thing they could teach me. Here's the run down of me cooking dinner tonight:

Me thinking about how ingenious I am that I'll be using the rest of the spaghetti sauce from a previous night to make hamburger pizza for the kids' dinner.

Me spreading the spaghetti sauce on the pizza crust only to find out that I didn't have *quite* enough sauce for the pizza.

Me wondering what the heck I was going to do now. I certainly don't want to open a new jar of sauce when I needed less then a half cup...

Me squirting the pizza with ketchup, mixing the spaghetti sauce and ketchup around on the crust, and then sprinkling the 'new' sauce with garlic, onion powder, and oregano.

Me excusing myself from the dinner table to take a picture of this fancy pizza.

The kids wondering out loud why I am taking a picture of their dinner.

Me laughing hysterically while I tell them I'll be blogging about their dinner later.

The whole family playing the game "Guess what mom made our pizza out of?"

Me ending dinner thinking that not only am I a genius, but I'm pretty freakin' funny too :)

I posted the recipe in case you wanted to recreate this dish for your own family:

"Cheeseburger Pizza"

1 Pre-made store bought pizza crust
Small amount of left over spaghetti sauce (that contains ground beef)
Generous squirt of ketchup
Sprinkle of garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano
Hand fulls of mozzarella cheese

Pre-heat oven to 350 (or what ever the package of pizza crust calls for)
Place ingredients on the pizza crust in the order listed above.
Bake for the recommended time listed on the pizza crust wrapper.
Turn oven up to 450 when you get impatient to make the pizza cook quicker.
Cut into squares and enjoy!

I Need a New Drug

I'm tense. I'm feeling cagey. I'm angry and distraught. I'm cranky, irritable, and feel distant from people. In between bouts of anger and self-loathing, I feel guilty. I should be counting my blessings (or my unicorns as a blogger friend calls them). I have so much to be thankful for. But instead I'm standing in the entryway of my house, in tears. Not just the misty-eye type tears I normally have, we're talking full-on-crazy-longing-mourning-hysterical tears. All because...

I mentally and physically crave a bike ~~ride~~ race. I need to feel the wind on my face. I want my legs to scream at me while climbing giant hills. I want to shred rock gardens and jump logs. I want to dare myself to take drops I never thought I could. I want sweat pouring down my face and mud on my tutu. I want to be at the starting line when my boys take off. I want to run to the next spectator area on the track so I can scream and cheer for them again and again. I want to 'holla' for my fellow bikers and take pictures of my kid on the podium. I want to eat chicken salad sandwiches near the hot dusty track. I want my calendar full. I want plans. I want reasons why I *need* to take time for myself, not reasons why I can't.

I miss it so bad it hurts and I'm totally lost without it. I don't know what to do. I don't know where to go. I don't know how to be.

Cheesy Goodness?

I have a 'thing' for goat cheese. I can vividly remember the first time I tried it. I was pet/house sitting for a friend and had been raiding her cupboards. I found rye crisp crackers and a few kinds of cheese. I horked down the first cheese and can't even tell you what it was. All I remember is that it was good and creamy...and I wanted more. I opened up the fridge and saw she had goat cheese.

I thought to myself, "If my friend has goat cheese in her fridge, and my friend is a cheese lover, it's got to be good."

I put a nice sized hunk of the soft, creamy cheese on my plate next to my rye crisp crackers. I filled up my wine glass and headed back toward the couch.

I log onto Facebook.

I spread the creamy goodness on my cracker.

I take a huge bite.

I almost throw up.

It tastes like barn. I mean really.....it-tastes-exactly-like-barn. As in I can taste the goat. I can taste the hay or straw or what ever else they use to cover the floor of the barn...

I vow on Facebook to never-ever-ever eat 'barn' again. Goat cheese is nasty. It's not to be eaten by anyone....period. Oh, and my friend is crazy for even having it in her house.

Months later, I'm over at my friend's house, she'd decided to re-introduce me to goat cheese. I think it was some sort of fig and 'barn' concoction? It wasn't too bad actually....I didn't totally gag at the first bite. I did think it was a little cruel of her, considering she was well aware of my feelings towards all things 'barn', but I let it slide.

Again dinner at my friend's house....again with the goat cheese.....it was even better then the last time.

Another dinner with my friend....another round of goat cheese (maybe it was an asparagus, grapefruit, and 'barn' salad?)....shyly I admit....I kinda like 'barn'.

Slowly I start to experiment with goat cheese on my own. And do you know what? You can put goat cheese on just about anything!

New twist on cheese bread? Try goat cheese and chopped scallions.

Making a salad? Add some goat cheese.

Having gyros? Not without goat cheese.

Pizza night? GOAT CHEESE!!!

Bailey the Bendy and Barfing Dog

Our dog, Bailey, is quite the dog. Not only is she extremely bendy, but she's a bit naughty too. Like every good pet owner, we've learned to adapt our lives to keep her out of trouble. We've flipped from being an 'over the top' kind of toilet paper family to being an 'under' type. We close the door to the bathroom, the upstairs bedrooms, and the down stairs whenever we leave the house. Our napkins are kept on top of a small pantry and the box of kleenex is always kept up high too. (She has a thing for paper products.)

We had strict rules regarding the Halloween Candy this year. You might remember our first rule: Eat Your Candy

Our second rule was: Keep you candy shut up in the pantry.

One would think those two small rules would be pretty easy to follow, but unfortunately The Brainiac forgot rule number two. (Don't ask me how that happened!)

The kids and I went out for the day. Nathan was downstairs, working. He heard a rumbling upstairs and came up to find the dog chowing down on The Brainiac's candy. He didn't think she ate much of it, so we decided to let the natural consequences take place. More then likely she would end up with diarrhea or throw it up - either way we were experienced with both of those situations. That night she made it clear she needed to go out one extra time, no biggie, we can do that.

Monday night the family went swimming. When we came home, The Brainiac decided he would check to see if Bailey the Bendy Dog had been a 'good girl' while we were gone. He found his candy bucket empty, on the table....

We were now faced with the fact that she had eaten WAY too much candy for a dog her size. We needed to induce vomiting. We've never actually induced vomiting before, but we knew it was something we could do with a bit of hydrogen peroxide.

We googled the correct dose.

Nathan filled the syringe.

The Artist took the dog to the back yard.

I put on a pair of sweat pants and a grubby t-shirt.

As Nathan was getting ready to walk out the door, with the syringe in hand, he asked The Brainiac, "You're sure your candy was in that bucket, right?"

The Brainiac reflects on that question....he says, "Um, I think so?" Then he opens the pantry door and says, "Huh, I guess not. My candy's right here!"

Relief sweeps over us as we realize we don't need to induce vomiting in Bailey the Bendy Dog.

I burst out in laughter because that's what I do.

We dispose of the peroxide and continue with a normal night.

Fast forward twelve hours later: I hear the wrenching sound of a dog throwing up. I scream at the kids to get her outside. The Artist drags the dog out. I clean up a bit of dog throw up off the entryway rug.

"Hmmmph..." I think, "The dog threw up anyways. Damn dog."

Five minutes later...same drill, only this time The Artist says, "Oh, she threw up on the steps too."

I go to clean up her mess and I find a HUGE, tightly-wound, wad of candy wrappers on the steps...I guess we *could have* induced vomiting last night.

~ I actually considered taking a picture of the wad of wrappers that came out of her. You know, for the sake of the blog - what are blogs without pictures? Instead I decided I'd post a couple of pictures of her doing what she does best:

Just Don't Paint It Black

When we bought our current house seven years ago, the first room I painted was my step-daughter's, The Artist. Even though she only lived with us half-time, I wanted her to have her very own space. She was eight years old at the time and I wanted her room to be magical and creative...inspiring and comforting at the same time.

I'll admit it. I picked the colors and motif. The walls were painted varying colors: pink, blue, and green. Scattered along the walls were cute fairy wallpaper cut-outs and hanging from the ceiling were more fairies. I liked to think of it as little people to watch over her while she played, slept, and dreamed the sweetest of dreams...

She's fifteen now and she moved in with us full-time about six months ago. The hanging fairies had been taken down years ago and she's covered the wall fairies with Twilight posters and poems or drawings from her friends. She's asked me to paint her room several times. Each time I've blown her off. I've given her one excuse after another:

"Not all the rooms in the house have been painted yet."

"It's just so much work to paint your room."

"I have too much to do right now."

"I don't have time."

"My bathroom gets painted before your bedroom gets re-painted!"

But mostly I think I just wasn't ready for her to be growing up. I wanted to hang onto those fairies for just a little longer. I wanted to tuck her in and wish her sweet dreams. I wanted to brush her hair and paint her fingernails. I wanted her to crawl in my lap so I could look into that sweet beautiful face and let her know that there's nothing we can't do together...

I've cried a few tiny, silent tears this weekend as the fairies came down and the color she picked, Maiden Voyage blue, started taking over the walls. And I know that I'll still be able to brush her hair, paint her fingernails, tell her I love her, and for just a few more years I *can* tuck her in and wish her the sweetest of dreams.

Candy Candy Candy

When my first two kids (The Social Guy and The Artist) were little I was pretty controlling of their Halloween candy. Not only did I limit how much Trick or Treating they did, I had several rules about how/when they ate their candy.

I was to personally inspect ALL candy before they were able to eat even one piece.
On the night of Halloween they were allowed to eat three pieces of candy.
On the morning after Halloween they could have ONE piece of candy AFTER breakfast.
After that first morning following Halloween they were not allowed to have any candy until after lunch.
Their daily limit on candy was 2 or 3 pieces.

Here are the Halloween Candy rules I have today:

Sing Me a Song

When I was young I was often told that I couldn't sing, that I had a horrible voice. I even had an aunt who offered to pay me money if I wouldn't sing in front of her. I grew up thinking my voice was offensive to others. I stayed FAR away from karaoke and eventually I even quit singing to the radio.

Several years ago we started playing Rock Band. Obisously I was pretty shy about the mic. What I liked about Rock Band though, is that it has a pitch indicator and according to the game....I could hit the pitch. We invited friends over and even though no one was saying things like "Oh I just love it when you sing this song!", no one asked me to stop singing. AND I was hitting 90+% of the notes, so my confidence level was rising.

I still wasn't a fan of karaoke. I didn't want to be up there singing my heart out and people in the crowd thinking they needed to 'help me out', laugh at me, or cheer because I was finally done singing. But I did go to karaoke for a friend's birthday and I sang a few songs I knew from Rock Band. Little by little the voices of the past were being quieted by MY voice...the voice that was proving that I *can* sing.

Rock Band 3 ranks all of the bands according to score. Obviously the better you sing/play the higher score you get. Nathan and I were checking the rankings last night and guess what? Our band (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly Dog) is in the top 16% for singing!!! This is the top 16% of ALL Rock Band bands on the PS3! Not only that, but my kid (The Social Guy) actually says he loves it when I sing "Stand in the Rain" by Superchick and requests it often. So kiss my ass bitches of the past...I can too sing!

Cleaning Out the Pantry

I cleaned out our pantry this week and one of the things I found was a mostly used bag of rice. That night for dinner I was making sweet and sour venison. I thought it would be a perfect way to use up the rest of the rice. As I double checked the directions I noticed this suggestion on the back of the bag:

"To retain vitamins, do not rinse before or drain after cooking."

It's white rice. Really...how many vitamins are there in *white* rice? I'll tell you how many:

Yeah, be really careful with this stuff. I'd hate to see the nutritional value of it if you were to rinse it.

For the Love of the Band

I love Rock Band. I'm pretty sure I'm not part of the 'normal' demographics Harmonix is thinking of when they made the game, but here I am...an avid fan of the game.

We started with the original Rock Band, in fact I can remember the day we bought it. Nathan's niece was staying over for a few days and the kids thought it would be fun to pitch their money together and buy it. They were a bit short on cash and since I wasn't at all opposed to the idea of getting the game I sent a few texts to Nathan and next thing you know....we've got Rock Band!

One of the things I like best about the game is that Nathan and I can play with just the two of us, we can play with the kids, or we can invite a house full of people over and still have a great time. Even though I love the game, it's not a game I like to play by myself. For me, Rock Band was *made* to be shared.

Over the years, we've gotten to the point where we'd worn out our instruments. Originally we had bought the game for the Wii, but we've had a few problems with our Wii. The biggest problem was during Christmaspalooza (a multi-day Christmas event we hold with my sister and her husband). During the Christmas celebration we attempted the Endless Song Set List 2 several times. Each time we were deep into the set of 84 (Yes, you read that right, 84!) songs the Wii would freeze. We were relentless....but it didn't matter. We were beat by the Wii every time we tried to complete the set. Now we're not insane, so eventually we quit trying to accomplish the impossible. But there it was, in the back of my mind, that damn Endless Song Set List 2....just waiting to be out done.

Fast forward to last Spring and rumors of Rock Band 3 being released for the Holidays. I could not wait! Due to the whole Wii freeze thing, we ditched the idea of investing more money into Rock Band for the Wii. I saved my spare change and we bought a PS3, plus the Rock Band 2 bundle so we could get brand new instruments. Best-decision-ever! Our band was back in business.

Rockband 3 comes out at midnight on Tuesday. I have our copy reserved and I'm totally psyched to pick it up. Still in the back of my head is that lingering question: "Can we beat the Endless Song Set List 2?" Of course we didn't actually have that Set List unlocked on the PS3 yet, but I still thought about it.

On Friday night Kelsey, Nathan, and I were playing Rockband. I was lost in my head imagining a 'Rock Band room' in my dream house. It would be complete with a stage, huge tv, kick butt sound system, and an awesome light show! And guess what? We unlocked the Endless Song Set List 2. I took a picture of the tv with my phone and texted it to my sister.

(I love how it says, "Best of luck with that.")

Right away she called me and we made a date to tackle it Saturday night. Time wasn't exactly on our side, but we really wanted to beat the game before Rock Band 3 came out. With snacks made, caffeine in hand, and kids ready to switch out with us, by 9:00 Saturday night we started the first of 84 songs.

The first twenty songs went pretty good and by the time we got half way there we started to slow down a bit. The older kids went to bed at about 2:00 and we got to the last three songs at about 4:40 in the morning. We were losing steam fast, but we only had three more songs to go. We can do it!

The third to the last song in the set is called Visions by Abnormality. We were feeling pretty confident. We'd already beat Master Exploder and knew we could beat Pain Killer, how hard could this one be? Apparently it was unbelievably hard. By 5:30 we still hadn't beaten it. Kelsey had even gotten up and out of bed to try to help us out. It was no use, we were done. We decided on a couple hours of sleep and maybe we'd try again in the 'morning'? We paused the PS3 and went to bed, full of caffeine and feeling completely defeated. Hours later it was decided that my sister and her hubby would go home. They had things to do and so did we. There was just no way we could beat the game. The PS3 was left on pause all day. I didn't have the heart to turn it off.

We spent the rest of the day cleaning the house, playing RISK, and being bummed out about our game. Maybe we'd try it again, but I knew we probably wouldn't. Just before dinner Matt decided he'd at least take a look at the song. He wasn't willing to take our word for it that the song was unbeatable. He grabbed a guitar and started plucking away. He made it through 8% of the song. Kelsey started getting excited and they asked Nathan if he'd give it one more shot. He said sure. We ended up with me on the bass, Nathan rocking the guitar, Kelsey banging on the drums, and Matt kicking out the vocals. We beat the song. The last two songs were a piece of cake and I'm actually proud to say we BEAT THE ENDLESS SONG SET LIST 2!

(And yes, I know that this blog probably puts me in the 'crazy' category...but I'm also a lot of fun and I'm okay with a little crazy and a lot of fun. Oh, and do you have your copy of Rock Band 3 reserved yet?

Fat Suck

I'm a total fan of the show Biggest Loser. I find the whole thing inspiring and amazing! It's cool how these people go from being so over weight to being athletes and it always makes me want to work out even harder. (I've even been known to tuck a tiny version of Jillian in my pocket, just in case I start to wimp out so she can kick my ass.)

One of the things Nathan and I have noticed is something we call the 'Fat Suck'. Here's the thing about loosing weight, the fat doesn't come off in a nice even layer. It comes off in weird places. In fact, I think people actually look even worse as they are loosing weight because of this 'Fat Suck' thing. I was going to wear my yoga pants today and instead of my nice, rounded, shapely ass and thighs...I have "Fat Suck." Which is great, right?

I've got a great two day start on Phase 3 going on and you know what happened today after I was *done* weight lifting? I figured a few things out:

First, I'm not going to comply with the 'no complaining about weight lifting' part of my plan and I'm okay with that.

Second, part of the reason I don't like the weight lifting and swimming part of my current journey is that I have no concrete goals with it. I have no idea how to set a goal with weight lifting or swimming. It's easy for me to set goals when running or biking. I can either decrease my time or increase my mileage. What kind of goals does one set for weight lifting? It's not like I want to become a body builder or anything. I could care less if I can pump the twenty-one pounders when doing bicep curls. Yeah, I know that's probably not 'body building' poundage - but I've never researched it, so I wouldn't know. Sure with swimming I could try to get in more laps every time I swim, but read on...

This is the ultimate reason why I'm just not a fan of weightlifting and swimming:

I actually *have* to pay attention. I have to count reps and sets or I have to watch a clock that's close to the ceiling at the pool and count laps.

Well, I get bored counting. I like to get lost in my head. Lord knows I can stay in my own mind for days on end. When I used to take time out of my day to hop on the bike or pound some pavement I wouldn't really have to pay attention. I could have a million things going on in my brain and I could pause, stop, and re-play them all at will. Sure I'd have to pay more attention when mountain biking, but even then I had a trail that I knew well enough I could just let go (Yay Murphy medium trail!). The physical part of exercising isn't enough for me. I NEED to find away to get that mental break.
