I’m sure this is going to come as a total shock to you, but I have a thing for desserts. I wish it were only the tiny, inedible variety, but no, I’m an equal opportunity lover of all forms of sugary goodness. For my friend’s birthday this week, I tried a new recipe from Cooking Light, grapefruit poundcake. It’s seriously yummy, and it’s perfect for almost-spring weather. Easter dessert, anyone?

But I digress. I’m working on a new project, which I’ll be documenting in detail for a series of articles for American Miniaturist, the first of which will be coming out in August. Using three shadowboxes with removable inserts, I’m creating an entire alphabet of desserts, with one dessert in each compartment. I’ll be doing one box of nine compartments at a time, and so far, I’m up to E for éclair. Yum.

Here’s a little run down of the process. First, I made up a big ol’ list of ideas, hitting Google when I got stuck (what can I say, I drew a blank on desserts that start with ‘x’). Once I’d decided on a dessert for each letter, I started sculpting. At this stage, each piece is sitting in its compartment all by its lonesome, but as I progress, I’ll add wallpaper and tiny accents, making each compartment look more like a tiny room. I can’t wait to see the first box once it’s entirely filled!

They come out–pretty nifty!

The first dessert I made was a little angel food cake topped with strawberries, and actually, this is the first time I’ve ever made a mini angel food cake, so it’s been a day of firsts.

Here’s the box starting to fill up.

And if you remember my earlier post about creating more realistic cupcake earrings, I tried the new technique on the even smaller dollhouse scale, and it worked. Woo!

The necklace is affixed with a handy, super strong magnetic clasp, so no more fumbling blindly with annoying spring loaded clasps behind your back.

It was Christmas in February this morning in my studio as I updated a few listings for the cookie molds I debuted with the launch of the Deluxe Cookie Kit. At the time, I didn’t have photos of the finished cookies to include so the listings looked a little ho-hum, hence my Christmas cookie agenda today. I used the molds to make a variety of sugar cookies (and one lone gingerbread man; stand proud, little dude!), and then I used polymer clay icing and other accents to decorate them.
