It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Not because you can finally get your pumpkin-spiced everything that you’ve been waiting for. Not because the leaves are starting to change to beautiful colors. Tis’ the season of Halloween, bringing with it the annual bingeing of horror flicks, but great horror movies can be hard to find. So I took it upon myself to find some solid horror flicks that you probably haven’t seen (less than 50,000 ratings on IMDB). So let’s get to it. 

20. Luz (2018) - 611

Clocking in at a brisk 70-minute runtime, Luz gives us a stylized possession film that is likely to please some and confuse others. Debut Director Tilman Singer, gives us a sweet little fever dream of a flick that was delightful as hell. 

19. Apostle (2018) - 32,815 

Slow burn, Folk-horror, with a side of cultish surrealism. Gareth Evans gives us a twisted and bizarre fairy tale with a splash of gore. Let us not forget the wonderful performances of Dan Stevens and Michael Sheen. This Netflix Original is certainly worth your attention. 

18. Under the Shadow (2016) - 19,460

This is one of the coolest ghost stories seen in recent memory.  It’s an intimate horror that feeds on the fears of shame and inadequacy, set up against an interesting backdrop and layered with strong performances and deep social commentary.  

17. The Devil’s Candy (2015) 14,803

After making its way around some festivals, the latest outing from Sean Byrne finally got released in early 2017. It’s a short and stylish homage to occult films and adds another strong film to Byrne’s resume. 

16. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) - 20,078

 Filled with wit and charm, Behind the Mask perfectly deconstructs the slasher genre which the creators clearly love. It is incredibly intelligent and has plenty of horror elements that will make genre fans pleased. 

15. Peeping Tom (1960) - 27,533

This flick catches the fear of the characters in a way that hadn’t previously been done. Peeping Tom barely beats out Psycho as the first slasher movie ever and it totally warrants the watch. 

14. A Horrible Way To Die (2010) - 3,195

Here is a stripped-down thriller that relies on storytelling rather than effects and it flat out delivers. Adam Wingard knows what he is doing behind the camera and when he pairs up with writer, Simon Barrett, it tends to go well. 

13. Eyes Without A Face (1960) - 23,426

This chilling fairy tale of guilt and obsession, that made audiences faint when it was first released, still holds up almost 60 years later and is poetically horrific. 

12. Lake Mungo (2008) - 13,810

Another strong story that uses the frame of a documentary to help shape a creepy movie-going experience that is guaranteed to satisfy those who are patient.

11. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) - 27,246 ratings

This unique genre-bending vampire film is equal parts romantic, emotional, and creepy as all of the elements come together to create something wonderful. Ana Lily Amirpour creates a must-see Vampire flick with her directorial debut. 

10. Goodnight Mommy (2014) - 37,046

When two kids can’t decide if their mother is who she says she is, they make it their mission to find out in this dark and twisted tale that makes us question our own reality. This movie is shrouded in a cloud of ominous tension and when the ending hits, you are left with your jaw on the floor. 

9. Black Christmas (1974) - 28,234

When you think of incredible slasher movies, very rarely does this movie get mentioned along with the other greats. That is a travesty as this could very well be the best the genre ever was. The imagery is downright terrifying and sets the stage for all those that came after. 

8. Suspiria (2018) - 44,220

This pick might make of few of you angry but mixed reviews aside, I loved this flick. Don’t worry, the original still has a wonderful place in my heart. Regardless of your feelings on the movie as a whole, the finale is a gory masterpiece and the possession dance sequence early on might be one of the most terrifying things on film in the last 20 years. 

7. The Loved Ones (2009) - 34,818

Sean Byrne has made two movies and they are both on this list. The Loved Ones is horrifically mesmerizing and filled with so many WTF moments that you will wonder why you are still watching but won’t want to turn away. 

6. Honeymoon (2014) - 23,194

This incredibly uncomfortable film will have your skin tingling by the end of it and it’s stars (Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway) give two all-out performances that make the horror feel so real because it’s rooted in real-life fears and anxieties. 

5. Thirst (2009) - 38,600

This unique story adds a refreshing breath of life into the Vampire film that has been poorly done so many times before. Add Chan-wook Park’s insane ability to make every frame breathtakingly beautiful and you have a movie that shouldn’t be missed. 

4. Murder Party (2007) - 9,070 - nearly doubling last year

The Horror/Comedy sub-genre is one filled with incredible films but Murder Party may very well be the best!  The first outing of Jeremy Saulnier is top-notch filled with incredible banter and a gnarly finale that is unlike any other.

3. Climax (2018) - 31,217

Gaspar Noé delivers uniquely visceral “entertainment” in ways few directors would dare, and Climax is one of his best. The first half of this movie is a beautifully choreographed dance number that is wonderfully constructed. Then the flick takes a complete left turn and we are left with some incredible long shots through a hellish nightmare of paranoia and anxiety. 

2. Mandy (2018) - 12,000 - 48,385

Enough of you watched this over the last year that it almost didn’t make the list but here it stands in the number 2 spot!  Mandy starts itself at a slow pace but after 45 minutes of gorgeous scenery, mood, and atmosphere Nicolas Cage gets let off the leash leaving us with a bloody, acid-laced, tale of revenge. It’s over the top in the best way possible and though it will be polarizing, I believe that it’s totally worth the watch. 

1. The House of the Devil (2009) - 37,425

A nostalgic homage to 70’s horror that is downright perfect! In a cinematic age that relies on jump scares and gore with a very little story, The House of The Devil is a beacon of everything that horror movies should be!

Hagazussa (2017) - 2,315

It’s been called The Austrian/German answer to Robert Egger’s The Witch; and while it may not cohere or satisfy in the same way, Hagazussa: A Heathen’s Curse has quite a lot going for it. Writer/Director Lukas Feigelfeld and his Cinematographer Mariel Baqueiro have crafted a film that is as visually sumptuous, hypnotic, and atmospheric as it is off-putting, unsettling, and at times repellent. It’s a film i’m not eager to revisit for quite some time, but that’s really a testament to how effectively it sets you in a time and place you immediately wish you could escape. It also features a harrowing, committed performance from Aleksandra Cwen. All in all a pretty stunning debut feature, I look forward to the next projects from all involved. The Alchemists Cookbook (2016) - 939

Not a horror film in the traditional sense, The Alchemists Cookbook defies easy categorization. For as much tension as the film rings out of its protagonist’s (Ty Hickson) slow descent into isolation and possible full-blown madness; it’s also content to spend plenty of time basking in the easy banter and sometimes comedic gold provided by said protagonists one friend, played with scene stealing brilliance by Amari Cheatom. Again if you’re looking for traditional scares, this is not your movie, if you’re looking to mess with your head a bit, Welcome To The Wonderful World of Joel Potrykus :)

Digging Up The Marrow (2014) - 4,172

I found this little gem in the midst of ARKTOBER 2018 while my cousins Matt & Patrick (The Brothers Blanchard) were working on their Hatchet Franchise Podcast (Honey Island Swamp Tours). Truth be told their podcast never quite won me over as far as Hatchet was concerned, BUT it did tip me off to a fresh-ish take on the found footage genre from that franchise’s main creative force, Director Adam Green. Admittedly some of the more meta-textual aspects of Digging Up the Marrow may have been lost on me; what absolutely was not lost on me was a fantastically enjoyable performance from the legendary Ray Wise, and some incredible art direction from Alex Pardee. Angst (1983) - 7,073

Another ARKTOBER 2018 Discovery, this time Thanks to Shudder. Angst is simply put, one of the most visually compelling and structurally interesting films about a killer I’ve ever seen/endured. The subject matter is bleak, and the tone and perspective offer even less comfort; but there is, dare I say it, some art to this. Angst has stuck with me; and just now, about a year later, it might be time for me to take another look… (Note AVAILABLE NOW : AMAZON PRIME)

Movies:

Paddleton (2019)

Released: February 22, 2019

Well, I wasn’t prepared mentally for this heartbreakingly beautiful movie about love and friendship. Ray Romano and Mark Duplass were absolutely brilliant, in this raw and emotional tale. These stellar but subtle performances leave us with a perfect balance of humor and heartbreak that leaves Paddleton in the upper echelon of 2019, thus far. 9 out of 10

Captain Marvel (2019)

Released: March 8, 2019

It is a real shame that so many people have taken to review bombing the latest outing from Marvel because Captain Marvel is a fun treat for audiences willing to give it a shot. Brie Larson shows us her quick wit and star power as we see her transformation into an action star. Though the latest addition to the MCU has some flaws, specifically in the 3rd act during a CGI infused action sequence against an entire space fleet; CM wins you over with nostalgic easter eggs, solid action stretches, and some well-placed banter. As it compares to the rest of the MCU, it will likely find itself in the middle of the pack but it might have one of the greatest supporting performances in the franchise with Ben Mendelsohn. 7 out of 10.  

TV:

Queer Eye: Season 3 (2019)

Released: March 15, 2019

I cannot stress highly enough how good this show is. As reality shows go, QE is the best of the best as they give us a chance to learn about other individuals and realize the importance of belonging and joy. This season seems to have a heavier emphasis on the personal stories of each of the nominated participants which leads to better storytelling and a greater emotional impact. 9.5 out of 10.

West Wing: Season 1 (1999-2000) - Throwback Review

Released: September 22, 1999

Aaron Sorkin is a master of his craft and West Wing is a wonderful example of what it looks like when a writer is firing on all cylinders. Strong character development and fast based dialogue give us a solid foundation for what will prove to be one of the best shows ever written. With all that in mind, each well-written character is given life by a top-notch troop of performers that put us right in the center of all of the chaos. 8 out of 10.

Music:

To Believe by The Cinematic Orchestra

Released: March 15, 2019

To Believe opens beautifully with its titular track and it’s easy to get lost in the ambient sounds; but if you give it an isolated/engaged listen, you’ll be pleased by what this British duo has given us on their 4th full-length. Tracks are wonderfully composed even though stretches of the album can feel a bit to samey. And, although well produced, this LP will regrettably find itself categorized as ‘really solid but somewhat forgettable’ due to the ease with which it can fade into the background. 6 out of 10.

Panorama by La Dispute

Released: March 22, 2019

The latest effort from the quintet from Grand Rapids is not just an album but a brilliant composition told over 10 beautiful movements and is the equivalent (imho) to the post-hardcore version of Tchaikovsky. Every beautifully spoken syllable is placed into a wall of sound that encapsulates the human experience like an audible mosaic.  With every listen the emotional resonance grows as distorted riffs bounce back and forth from a subtle whisper to a bombastic scream. Blend all of that with a staggering rhythm section, poignant lyricism and you have one of the strongest rock albums in recent memory. Panorama is a masterpiece. 10 out of 10.

Movies:

Behind the Curve (2018)

This documentary centers around the world of flat-earthers and gives us insight into their belief system. Though you can’t dispute science, what you can do is figure out how these individuals arrived at their destination. What starts as a documentary about Flat-Earth, really becomes more about how we let people get to the point of disputing the indisputable and what we can do to fix it. 7 out of 10

How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)

Though this film lacks the emotional punch of the first two installments of this trilogy, The Hidden World still puts a nice little bow onto the film franchise that the kids will enjoy. You will still find some laughs but ultimately this film is the weakest of three with less character development and less depth than it’s predecessors. 6 out of 10

Leaving Neverland (2019)

Leaving Neverland is a brutally uncomfortable watch as we get two accounts of child grooming and sexual abuse. The depictions are graphic, heartbreaking, and gutwrenching as the documentary gives these victims a chance to speak out and share their stories of survival as they search for closure.  8 out of 10

(Knowledge is incredibly important in preventing child sexual abuse. Please look into organizations like Darkness to Light to gain education and training in how you can help prevent future instances of abuse.)

TV:

True Detective Season 3 (2019)

After a long wait, we get another season of True Detective and it flat out delivers. A decent plot is elevated by an impeccable ensemble, specifically the performances from Ali and Dorff. The season is a slow burn and has its peaks and valleys but ultimately Season 3 is a welcome addition to the series. 8 out of 10.

The Umbrella Academy (2019)

The Umbrella Academy is outlandish, wacky, hilarious, and unbelievably charming. Gerard Way’s comic makes its way to the TV screen and does so in spectacular fashion. The music cues are fantastic and help to perfectly balance the action with emotional character threads culminating with an impressive finale. Klaus and Number 5 are the stars of the show but everyone brings something unique to the table which is one of the many reasons that this show works so well. 10 out of 10

Another week, another set of Reviews! Lots of TV was watched this week. I also didn’t hit my gym goal for the week and I wonder if those are correlated?

Movie:

Abducted in Plain Sight (2017)

For its style and delivery, it’s fine. Nothing groundbreaking in the way that this was shot and edited but the content is absolutely mind-blowing. Viewers will likely find themselves yelling at the television and face-palming themselves as the parents retell the story of their daughter's kidnapping. 6.5 out of 10

A Star is Born (2018)

A Star is Born hits all the beats that it needs to and I completely understand why people love it. There are moments that down right gave me chills, specifically, pretty much anytime Gaga performs; and Sam Elliott speaks volumes in a brief but incredibly strong turn as Cooper’s brother. For all the good, there are still some flaws, mainly in some awkward chemistry moments between Cooper and Gaga where they struggled to find the emotional chords that they were looking for. Still a rock solid movie. 8 out of 10

TV:

Real Bros of Simi Valley - Season 2

A little more budget and a longer form adds a nice boost to the quality of RBOSM in the second season. The show still manages to stay engaging in its 2nd season, coming back with even more wit and charm. We also get a bit more character development to see which players really make the show work. If you like the first season, you’ll enjoy kicking back and watching the follow up as it plays out being more of the same.  8 out of 10

The Dragon Prince - Season 1

From the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender, we get The Dragon Prince. This kid-friendly cartoon is layered with a simple story for the kids while layered well with clever pop culture references and thoughtful content for the adults. The animation looks great and the band of misfits that you follow are enjoyable and easily hold your attention through ten 22-minute episodes. 7.5 out of 10

The Dragon Prince - Season 2

Everything that The Dragon Prince does well in the first season, they expand upon in the follow-up. Expect your heartstrings to be pulled and for deeper concepts to be explored as we continue with our heroes on their journey. I found myself more invested this time around and I am truly excited to see what happens in the future for this show. 9 out of 10

Lorena

The Amazon Prime docuseries on Lorena Bobbitt gives us a pretty in-depth look into each case surrounding the infamous evening and even dives into what happens after. The show is informative and is watchable from start to finish. There is nothing truly groundbreaking about series and I am not a fan of generic replacements to make up for footage that doesn’t exist but when all is said it done, its a fine watch. 6.5 out of 10

Music:

Head Above Water by Avril Lavigne

Released February 15th

Avril is back with an album that seems to have trouble deciding what it wants to be. Track to Track, it feels very disjointed and is overproduced. There are moments where you feel the emotional resonance that was put into certain songs but the production reeks of trying to play to a mass audience. Head Above Water has moments of catchy hooks but mostly struggles to find the powerful voice that it was searching for. 4 out of 10.

Welcome back to another edition of Sunshine’s Weekly Review! I apologize to those who might deem my music reviews as “mean” this week. As for Bohemian Rhapsody, I give no apologies. Without further ado, here are the reviews.

Movies:

Bohemian Rhapsody

Released: November 2, 2018

Bohemian Rhapsody gives us a stellar performance by Rami Malek but overall leans too much on nostalgia and a killer soundtrack to support a mediocre script and muddled storytelling. I would have liked less footage of Queen playing on stage and a more in-depth look at what was happening behind the music. This movie plays less like a biopic and more like a 2-hour music video. You’ll find yourself enjoying the music but that’s really about it.  6 out of 10

Alita: Battle Angel

Released: February 14, 2019

Despite some flaws in storytelling, Alita has a lot of things to be excited about. The world building was absolutely stunning and the action sequences flat out deliver on the big screen. The third act seems a bit rushed and underwhelming but even with that, the visuals were completely worth the price of admission. 7.5 out of 10

TV:

The Real Bros of Simi Valley: Season 1

Call it TV with the 2nd season currently airing on Facebook Watch, but Season 1 can all be streamed in under an hour on YouTube. Simi Valley is a beautiful parody of reality television that follows 4 young professional bros just trying to find themselves. This show is ridiculous, clever, and perfect way to spend 45 minutes. 9 out of 10

Russian Doll: Season 1

Released: February 1, 2019

Nasha Lyonne and Leslye Headland give us a real treat to kick off February. Lyonne is phenomenal as the cynical woman who can’t seem to stay alive and she is surrounded by a wonderfully absurd ensemble. This show is dark, twisted, and hilarious with a brilliant story arc. 9 out of 10

Music:

Quiet Signs by Jessica Pratt

Released: February 8, 2019

Quiet Signs is eerie and somber with hopeful tones that are brought forth over a simple structure. Pratt’s style most resembles the singer-songwriter vibe of the late ’60s and early 70’s and it’s not unpleasant but even at only a 27-minute runtime, Quiet Signs is a real chore to get through. 5 out of 10

Tracks to enjoy: “Poly Blue” & “This Time Around”

AJ Tracey by AJ Tracey

Released: February 8, 2019

A lack of vulnerability in the lyricism is the downfall of this effort from the UK Hip Hop artist. Euro-dance beats and generic rhythms blend together to create a forgettable album with absolutely no heart. This album is all fluff about “poppin’ bottles” & “Diamonds on my neck” and has no substance that gives you any insight to what makes AJ Tracey special.  3 out of 10

Tracks to enjoy: “Psych Out!” & “Country Star”

Can’t Say I Ain’t Country by Florida Georgia Line

Released: February 15, 2019

The latest release from Florida Georgia Line is a tough listen, to say the least. Generic pandering is put in place of genuine storytelling and they play it safe musically, with formulaic song structures and mundane instrumentation. This album is void of any redeeming qualities. 2 out of 10.

Let’s start with MOVIES, shall we? Two documentaries hit the streaming services earlier this month about the Fyre Festival, a luxurious music festival that never happened and while the internet has been filled with fans arguing for which one is better, I have to say that it just doesn’t matter.

Fyre Fraud (Hulu) Released - January 14th, 2019

Hulu’s Fyre Fraud, despite some sloppy editing and sometimes shoddy b-roll, was ultimately the more engaging of the 2 docs, for me. FF paces itself well but still falls into well worn territory with the endless parade of talking heads and little footage of the actual events; especially when you compare it to Netflix’s Fyre. I do appreciate, what seems to be, an unbiased account of the events that took place and the creative team's approach to interviewing Fyre’s creator, Billy McFarland. Overall, Fyre Fraud had lapses in editing which led to muddled storytelling. 5.5 out of 10.

Fyre (Netflix) Released - January 18th, 2019

Up next was Netflix’s Fyre, which from jump street finds itself in an ethical grey area being produced by the same media team as the festival itself. That partnership leads to better footage for the Netflix documentary but what is missing is a reason for me to care about the happenings behind the Fyre Festival. Though well shot and well produced, Fyre feels like a chance for people to clear their names, rather than giving us a naturally honest account of all that happened. 5 out of 10.

Regardless of the documentary, I had an overwhelming feeling of “So what?”. Both documentaries failed to make me care about the subject matter and you’re not missing anything special if you decide to skip them both.

COMPLAINT by Watsky Released January 11th, 2019

For those who enjoy the musical stylings from the quick spitting poet from San Fran, you will enjoy the latest outing. Watsky’s quick flow and nerdy vibe are still very much alive. It’s a fun little album that is guaranteed to please old fans and maybe attract some new ones. 6.5 out of 10

Weezer (Teal Album) by Weezer Released January 23rd, 2019

If you like covers and you like Weezer, then you will likely enjoy the Teal Album. For everyone else, you can probably skip this one. 4 out of 10

Sometimes listeners, Christmas comes early...After several months of teases and a solid month of teasers (too many?) The Ark of E Network & The Blanchard Brothers proudly present the 1st Episode of the podcast nobody asked for, but everyone deserves, The Bay of Lynch. 20. Ashley Bell - The Last Exorcism (2010)

Bell’s performance as the fearful farmer’s daughter, Nell, was engaging and heartbreaking. You feel every bit of fear and terror that she goes through and she elevates to film out of mediocrity.

19. Drew Barrymore - Scream (1996)

I already know that you are rolling your eyes as you read this, but give me a chance to make my case. Barrymore’s performance here is subtle and realistic. The opening scene from this hyper-aware, genre-changing film is iconic, mainly due to what Drew brings to the table.

18. John Cusack - 1408 (2007)

1408; the story of a ghost-hunter author trying to solve the mysteries of a deadly room, was met with mixed responses, but one thing that most can agree on is that Cusack pulls out all of the stops in his portrayal of the tortured writer, Mike Enslin. He takes his well-known, smart-ass vibe and adds a dose of terror and fear that supports this movie from start to finish.

17. Bill Moseley - The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

Bill Mosely’s plays Otis B Driftfood with a weird balance of composure, sanity, and sadism. When it comes to crafting sheer terror and discomfort, Bill Moseley has a gift. Whether “gift” is the right word or not, the audience is left with nothing but a tremedous feeling of unease. Otis B Driftwood is terrifying and might be one of the most underrated villains in cinema history.

16. Kurt Russell - Bone Tomahawk (2015)

Kurt Russell is a powerhouse as he leads a stellar team of performers in this western horror flick. Russell perfectly crafts a hero we can get behind in Sherriff Hunt and subtly maneuvers through this ominous work with a masterclass performance that is dark and gritty.

15. Jamie Lee Curtis - Halloween (1978)

Halloween by itself is violent and terrifying but it wouldn’t be the classic horror film that it is without the performance of it’s leading lady. JLC plays the babysitter with a stalker at such a high level, pulling every ounce of fear from each tension-filled scene.

14. William Forsythe - The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

And here we have our 2nd performance from Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects. Forsythe plays Sheriff Wydell, the cop on a revenge spree against the sadistic killers that took the life of his brother and he nails it. The performance is over the top and dark played with such raw emotion as we watch this character’s descent into madness.

13. Robin McLeavy - The Loved Ones (2009)

Demented and horrifying. McLeavy stars as the nerdy high schooler with a dark secret and she plays it to perfection. McLeavy takes a soft and sweet approach which is quickly thrown in a blender with batshit craziness and the outcome is a performance that you can’t take your eyes off of.

12. Garance Marillier - Raw (2016)

Marillier makes our stomachs churn with her performance of the vegetarian vet student who starts to have a taste for humans. As Marillier takes us through this demented, coming-of-age story, she grounds us in a setting that feels incredibly real. You feel her vulnerability, fear, and shame and you never question the world that she takes us to.

11. Ellen Burstyn - The Exorcist (1973)

Ellen Burstyn earned an Oscar Nomination for her performance as an actress, mom desperate for priests to save her daughter from demonic possession. Burstyn takes a role that could be easily overacted and grounds it in reality that gives the audience an opportunity to connect with all of her fears and anxieties.

10. Essie Davis - The Babadook (2014)

From one mother to the next, Essie Davis plays a widow dealing with the violent death of her husband. Though The Babadook is a terrifying monster, the real fear comes from a less fantastical place. Davis’s performance is intense and emotional as we see her character’s struggles in dealing with trauma, depression, and rage.

9. Michael Parks - Red State (2011)

One of the most terrifying things in this world can be extremism. We get a massive dosage of that in Kevin Smith’s horror movie, Red State. Michael Parks plays a pastor of an extremist church that kidnaps heathens and cleanses them of their wickedness. Parks is charismatic, thoughtful, and unwavering in his performance and delivers us a villain straight from hell.

8. Kathy Bates - Misery (1990)

This one may be a little on the nose but we’d be wrong for not having it on the list. Bates gives the performance of a lifetime as the dangerously obsessed super fan, blurring reality and fantasy. Her performance is downright chilling and earned her an Oscar… and then there’s the hobbling.

7. Kang-ho Song - Thirst (2009)

Kang-ho Song is open and raw in his performance as a priest infected with vampirism in this beautifully shot film from Chan-wook Park. Song’s performance draws you in and never lets you go.

6. Lina Leandersson - Let the Right One In (2008)

Lina Leandersson gives a subtle and powerful performance in a vampire tale unlike any other. She blends a playful innocence with ominous stoicism and the result is haunting.  

5. Mia Farrow - Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

Having a baby can’t be easy, especially if the baby belongs Satan. I would then argue that portraying that would aslo be incredibly difficult, but Farrow pulls it off and in spectacular fashion in this role that launched her into stardom.

4. Daniel Kaluuya - Get Out (2017)

Get Out, arguably the best movie of 2017 (The 2010’s?), addresses racism in American culture while paying homage to horror classics of the past. Kaluuya plays our hero and leads us through this nightmarish version of The Stepford Wives as he shows us a vulnerability that is rarely tapped into.

3. Piper Laurie - Carrie

There are a lot of scary things in Carrie, but nothing quite as terrifying as Margaret White, Carries mother. Religous extremism is always scary but when it’s delivered by Piper Laurie, it’s down right horrific.

2. Jack Nicholson - The Shining (1980)

Jack Nicholson horrifies us as the writer who turns into a murderous father in a haunted hotel. Nicholson perfectly shows us the evolution of evil as it infects the character over the course of the film and the end result is truly frightening.

1. Toni Collette - Hereditary (2018)

This psychological horror flick divided audience members at the end with a left turn that you either buy into or not, but what is less polarizing is the phenomenal acting performance from Toni Collette as the mother with a haunting past. Collette delivers the stuff of nightmares that is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression, securing her place as My Favorite Horror Performance of All Time.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Not because you can finally get your pumpkin spiced everything that you’ve been waiting for. Not because the leaves are starting to change to beautiful colors. Tis the season of Halloween, bringing with it the annual bingeing of horror flicks, but great horror movies can be hard to find. So I took it upon myself to find some solid horror flicks that you probably haven’t seen (less than 50,000 ratings on IMDB). So let’s get to it.

20. Slice (2018) - <1000

Some of you are going to hate this and some of you are going to absolutely love it. Thriller meets Wet Hot American Summer in this campy horror-comedy. You get a fun cast of characters with fun banter, campy kill scenes, and a surprisingly smart and subtle social commentary.

19. Pontypool (2008) - 25,000

This is a nice little pressure cooker. It gives off a claustrophobic feeling and though it’s mostly talk and little action, it delivers more than you might think.

18. Spring (2014) - 19,000

This international love story takes it’s time with the set up but when you finally get to the desired destination, it totally pays off.

17. Under the Shadow (2016) - 16,526

This is one of the coolest ghost stories seen in recent memory.  It’s an intimate horror that feeds on the fears of shame and inadequacy, set up against an interesting backdrop and layered with strong performances and deep social commentary.  

16. The Devil’s Candy (2017) 12,000

It’s a short and stylish homage to occult films and adds another strong entry to Sean Byrne’s resume.

15. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006) - 19,000

Filled with wit and charm, Behind the Mask perfectly deconstructs the slasher genre which the creators clearly love. It is incredibly intelligent and has plenty of horror elements that will make genre fans pleased.

14. Peeping Tom (1960) - 25,000

If you are wondering where the cliche of watching victims from the killer’s point of view comes from, look no further. Peeping Tom barely beats out Psycho as the first slasher movie ever and it totally warrants the watch.

13. A Horrible Way To Die (2010) - 3,000

Here is a stripped-down thriller that relies on storytelling rather than effects and it flat out delivers. Adam Wingard knows what he is doing behind the camera and when he pairs up with writer, Simon Barrett, it tends to go well.

12. Mandy (2018) - 12,000

Mandy starts itself at a slow pace but after 45 minutes of gorgeous scenery chewing, Nicolas Cage gets let off the leash leaving us with a bloody, acid-laced, tale of revenge. It’s over the top in the best way possible and though it will be polarizing, I believe that it’s totally worth the watch.

11. Eyes Without A Face (1960) - 20,000

This chilling fairy tale of guilt and obsession, that made audiences faint when it was first released, still holds up almost 60 years later and is poetically horrific.

10. Lake Mungo (2008) - 12,000

Another strong story that uses the framing of a documentary to help shape a creepy movie-going experience that is guaranteed to satisfy those who are patient.

9. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) - 25,000 ratings

This unique genre-bending vampire film is equal parts romantic, emotional, and creepy as all of the elements come together to create something wonderful. Ana Lily Amirpour creates a must see Vampire flick with her directorial debut.

8. Goodnight Mommy (2014) - 33,000

When two kids can’t decide if their mother is who she says she is, they make it their mission to find out in this dark and twisted tale that makes us question our own reality. This movie is shrouded in a cloud of ominous tension and when the ending hits, you are left with your jaw on the floor.

7. Black Christmas (1974) - 25,000

When you think of incredible slasher movies, very rarely does this movie get mentioned along with the other greats. That is a travesty as this could very well be the best the genre has to offer. The imagery is downright terrifying and it set the stage for all those that came after.

6. The Loved Ones (2009) - 32,600

Sean Byrne has made two movies and they are both on this list. The Loved Ones is horrifically mesmerizing and filled with so many WTF moments that you will wonder why you are still watching but won’t want to turn away.

5. Honeymoon (2014) - 22,000

This incredibly uncomfortable film will have your skin tingling by the end of it and its stars (Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway) give two all-out performances that make the horror feel so real because of its roots in real life fears and anxieties.

4. Thirst (2009) - 36,000

This unique story adds a refreshing breath of life into the Vampire film that has been poorly done so many times before. Add Chan-Wook Park’s insane ability to make every frame breathtakingly beautiful and you have a movie that shouldn’t be missed.

3. Murder Party (2007) - 5,381

The Horror/Comedy sub-genre is one filled with incredible films but Murder Party may very well be the best!  The first outing from Jeremy Saulnier is top notch, filled with incredible banter, and sports a gnarly finale that is unlike any other.

2. Raw (2016) - 43,000

This film is slathered with terrifying imagery that might be best viewed on an empty stomach. It is deliciously unsettling with strong performances that will stick with you long after the movie is over.

1. The House of the Devil (2009) - 35,158

A nostalgic homage to 70’s horror that is downright perfect! In a cinematic age that relies on jump scares and gore with very little story, The House of The Devil is a beacon of everything that horror movies can, and should be!

This week Rodriguez Revisited makes its triumphant return to The Movie Ark! Kent wasn’t the first person you’d except to be delving into genre films or television like we cover here on this site, but he certainly played a role in the foundations of this website. Whether he knew it or not, Kent was directly responsible for my fascination with filmmaking as an art form.

In the early and mid-eighties, we had yet to purchase a VHS player and were still running an all Beta-Max video library that was primarily recorded off of HBO. There was better gear to be had, but on a single salary with two children: my father couldn’t throw down on the topmost top of the line VCR. Kent didn’t have the added expense of children so he was able to purchase slightly cooler tech – and that included a VCR with functionality my father’s simply didn’t have: the lightning in the bottle that we know today as frame by frame advance.

As much a fan of Star Wars as anyone, Kent watched televised behind the scene specials and read articles about the fantastic film of George Lucas – but when he got his VCR he had a brilliant idea that he just had to share with his young nephew: he would go through the lightsaber fight between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader to try to figure out how it was animated. It took forever to go through each hand animated frame and we were able to see that not every frame featured a fully animated lightsaber, some just had the original on-set stunt saber. Kent thought it was neat, my Dad thought it was cool, but I was from that moment hooked on the idea that something much bigger was happening in the making of a film and I was desperately interested in finding out what that big machinery of film making really was.

Without that silly idea of showing off the features of his VCR to his young nephew, I might never have fallen as deeply in love with film as I did. Thanks Uncle Kent, for that and for so much more. Your support and encouragement over the years meant the world.

My Brother (Gavin) and I (Noah) still have a ton of catching up to do before we finalize our Top 10 Favorites of 2017. So, we thought we'd kick off 2018 on The Movie Ark with a discussion of all the things we've yet to cover from 2017 (Netflix & HBO Series, and handful of major releases Ex. Baby Driver) and the major things we're still hoping to catch soon. After that we get into a rundown of the 2018 releases we're excited for from January to May. We're sure you'll have a lot of trailer watching to do after this one... The Blanchard Brothers (Gavin & I) have been hard at work, banking episodes for The Ark of E's newest podcast The Bay of Lynch (Go Listen Rate Review & Subscribe!). So I thought it'd be a good time to hear one of The Blanchard Cousins (Regular Contributor and Host of The Four Color Ark, Matthew J. Blanchard) and I chat for a bit. You may recall several episodes back Gavin and I gave our lists of Top 10 Favorite Stephen King Adaptations. Around the same time, I recorded this episode with Matt to get his Top 10, as well as a more literary minded take on the adaptations (Matt is a true fan of King the novelist, not just King the source material). As ARKTOBER  began to dominate our recording schedule, I never got around to editing this episode, until now. Four Color Friends and Movie Maniacs alike, welcome back to another as close to spoiler free look at the latest superhero movie to hit theaters.  Let’s get the silly questions out of the way before we dive in:  No I didn’t do a hot take review on Thor: Ragnarok; Yes I am sorry I didn’t review Taika Waititi’s brilliantly fun take on Thor; No, I didn’t get paid to say I like Justice League; Yes I am a huge DC fan and am therefore somewhat biased; Yes, I actually did like BvS.

Good, because this one is going to be interesting.  With the film having been released a scant few days ago I’d like to continue the trend we started with the Wonder Woman and Spiderman: Homecoming reviews and keep this as spoiler free as possible – with a more in depth conversation coming soon via a Movie Ark/Four Color crossover podcast.  The problem with that is that there is a LOT to spoil within this movie – so we’ll have to tread very carefully.

The big question of course is: is Justice League good?  It is certainly a more fun movie than was Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice – but it is not necessarily a better constructed film than the often criticized BvS.  Wonder Woman still reigns supreme as the best DC film, but Justice League is arguably second or third depending on your thoughts on the at times complex narrative of BvS.  The big difference is this: Justice League is top to bottom a fun movie.  The core League members are a lot of fun, even stodgy old Batman is allowed to smile from time to time and crack a joke.  

The Mighty Marvel Marching Society would have you believe that we must obviously compare Justice League to Thor: Ragnarok and by that it objectively fails to deliver a superior film.  To that I suggest that we don’t need to compare the two cinematic universes at all, and if we did we should compare Justice League with The Avengers as each film represents the first full team film.  On that basis, I think Justice League is an equal to, and in some cases superior to its analogous Marvel film because the characters are much more fully realized as their comic’s counterparts in this film – and the paper thin plot here is slightly thicker than the paper thin plot of Marvel’s first team outing.

The basic premise of Justice League is that the villain Steppenwolf once tried to conquer the earth and use three “Mother Boxes” to terraform this planet to resemble his home (which while never clearly stated in the film: is known as Apokalips currently under the rule of his nephew Darkseid.)  Steppenwolf was not prepared for the alliance of Atlanteans, Amazonians, Men and Green Lanternsl; he was defeated and driven off of Earth and the three Mother Boxes were separated.  Atlantis guarded one box beneath the sea, the Amazon’s guarded one on the hidden island of Themyscira, and Men buried the third so that it would remain forever lost.  In the wake of Superman’s death, darkness has overtaken the planet and this darkness awakens the Mother Boxes – alerting Steppenwolf that the world is once again ripe for the taking.  Steppenwolf returns to earth to hunt his missing Mother Boxes and unite them to redeem himself for his earlier failure.  This time, there is nothing standing in his way except Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince who agree to build a team to try to defend the planet from the invaders.  The rest, is spoilers.

It's a straightforward plot that spends a lot of time introducing the new characters and building a dynamic, and perhaps the best way to review the movie without spoilers is to look at the individual characters.

Batman is fundamentally changed by his encounter with Superman in the previous film.  He feels tremendous guilt and blames himself for Superman’s death, and he has recognized that his methods are very much darker than Superman’s.  This is a Batman who has turned the page on who he was and is attempting to be the hopeful leader that Superman would have been had he survived.  This is also a Batman who, for the first time in any medium, actively states that he understands that Superman was fundamentally more human than he is.  That is a truth about the relationship about Batman and Superman that oozes off the page, but has never been expressly stated.  Taking on a mentor role to Barry Allen, and being antagonized by Arthur Curry really makes Affleck’s Bruce Wayne the backbone of this team and his casting REALLY pays off in this film.

Wonder Woman is much more the woman we saw in Patty Jenkins’ film than the secret recluse we last saw in Zack Snyder’s BvS.  There are narrative moments that are required to deal with the notion that Diana spent the hundred years after Wonder Woman hiding away because of what was stated in Batman V. Superman, but there is little in this film that doesn’t immediately showcase just how inspiration and badass Diana of Themyscira can be.  Thanks to the brilliant portrayal of Gal Gadot, Diana stands head and shoulders above the rest of the team. Her reluctance to lead comes from a place that makes sense, but it enables her to develop a nurturing relationship with Cyborg that elevates his role in the film significantly.

The Flash is the comedic high point of this film.  I have been joking since Ezra Miller was cast that he was #NotMyFlash and now that I’ve seen his performance I now say he is #STILLNotMyFlash.  If you’re a Four Color Ark reader I’ve spend many column inches talking about The Flash so I’ll try to be succinct here.  The classic version of Barry Allen in the comics was a boring, rules oriented, stick in the mud – so each live action adaptation has drawn more on the characterization of the “fun” Flash: Wally West.  John Wesley Shipp’s Flash and Grant Gustin’s Flash are both effectively different mixtures of Wally West and Barry Allen.  Ezra Miller’s Flash is more a mixture of Wally West and Barry’s future grandson the constantly energetic Bart Allen – better known to comic fans as Impulse.  Making Ezra Miller’s Barry fundamentally different than Grant Gustn’s Barry works well for this film, and allows him to fill a much different role in this film than Gustin fills in the CW universe of shows.  Miller’s Barry is unsure of himself, awkward, and finds it difficult to relate to people who move so much slower than he does.  His youthful excitement at all things throughout the film is infectious – and his constant need to find validation from Batman and friendship from Cyborg is a wonderful dynamic  #NotMyFlash is #TotallyMyImpulse and is a hell of a lot of fun.

Aquaman is fundamentally different than his comic counterpart at first blush, but the seeds of the strident master of the Trident are definitely there.   Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry as a man who doesn’t have a home and desperately wants to fit in somewhere, either below the sea or here on Earth.  His lack of belief in being accepted of course makes him reluctant to immediately join Batman’s team, and he becomes both the action star of the film, and Batman’s foil.

Cyborg is sadly the weakest component of the team, and it feels like most of that is due to the Warner Bros. mandate that this film not exceed 2 hours.  We know from the trailers that footage was shot of Ray Fisher as Victor Stone prior to the accident that nearly killed him and caused his father to use the Mother Box to turn his son into a cyborg.  Victor’s life has always been one filled with pathos, because he views himself as a cybernetic Frankenstein, and begrudges his father for his condition.  With the cut of this film delivered in theatres, we see very little of that pathos – and frankly very little to make us really connect to Victor’s arc of accepting his situation and even coming to enjoy his powers.  Ray Fisher squeezes all the marrow out of what little screen time he does have, but there just sadly is so little of him here.

Superman is the best and worst kept secret in this film.  EVERYONE knows he is coming back, not everyone knows how – and I’ll say nothing about the nature of his return to life except this:  the Superman delivered to us in this film is every bit the Superman you want to see on the big screen.  He’s hopeful, he smiles, he reassures everyone, he focuses on saving civilians at the expense of stopping the villain.  If one took Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman, and Justice League and just looked at them through the lens of Superman you can see a unique arc develop for the character where we follow him from a man unsure of his power in Man of Steel, to a hero frightened by his influence in Batman V. Superman, to a Superman finally accepting his role in the world fully in Justice League.  It plays very well and it redeems many of the complaints about the character from the previous two films.  Superman is the character a lot of people were most worried about going into this film, but he ends up being a highlight.

Steppenwolf is a placeholder villain, and doesn’t really rise above the heroes he is attempting to best.  There is no sense of menace, just gravelly voiced threats – so in that regard he is much like Alexis Denisof’s “The Other” in the MCU.  Wasted opportunity to showcase an amazing actor in Ciaran Hinds.

The Guest Cast Jeremy Irons is still fantastic as Alfred; Amy Adams is a perfectly fine Lois Lane; Diane Lane’s Martha is kind of wasted in this; Billy Crudup gives an interesting take on Henry Allen imprisoned in Iron Heights that definitely differentiates his Henry from John Wesley Ship’s version on the CW; Connie Nielsen’s Queen Hippolyta is awesome and I want more Themyscira; Amber Heard is briefly enjoyable as Mera;  Joe Morton as Silas Stone is perfectly fine but much like Ray Fisher I feel he was short shrifted in this. The REAL character you’re in this section to read about is: J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon and the answer to the question in your mind is: YES, he is more like the comic Jim Gordon than Gary Oldman was, and you will walk away wanting to see more rooftop conversations between him and Ben Affleck.

Overall the film is a lot of fun, but it is by no means a perfect film: if you want perfect, watch Wonder Woman.  What this film is, is a wonderful introduction to the Justice League that leaves room for these characters to grow and their world to become richer.  When you reach the end of this film, you’ll see the central metaphor of this franchise has always been about pulling the world of the DCEU out of darkness and into the light of hope.  This film does that, and leaves it off with the age of heroes fully realized… dawn is here and we’re finally in for the DC Universe as it SHOULD exist on screen.

20. Dead Snow (2009) - Norway

Dead Snow is campy, silly, gory, and a lot of fun. Plus, it has Nazi Zombies.

19. What We Do In the Shadows (2014) - New Zealand

This is just a smart and fun vampire comedy that deserves the watch. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waitit do a great job in delivering a horror-comedy that is self aware and touching.

18. Dead Alive; aka “Braindead” (1992) - New Zealand

Before Peter Jackson was directing epics in Middle Earth, he put together this outlandish and extremely gory zombie flick. This low-budget outing is just good-ole’ campy fun that is guaranteed to satisfy anyone who can handle it.

17. Audition (1999)  - Japan

What starts as an engaging drama quickly turns to an unsettling horror film that is violent and disturbing. One watch is enough for this stomach-churning film that you can’t unsee.

16. Eden Lake (2008) - United Kingdom

This tale is effective in its ability to make the audience feel just as trapped as the victims on screen. It also helps that the film is propelled by the extreme talents of Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly.

15. Hounds of Love (2016) - Australia

This psychological thriller will leave you with a queasy feeling afterwards. This is not due to severe gore, but more due to the strong performances that make it feel so real. The content is tough to stomach because of how this movie mirrors reality.

14. Under The Shadow (2016) - Jordan

This is one of the coolest ghost stories in recent memory.  It’s an intimate horror film that feeds on the fear of shame and inadequacy, set against an interesting backdrop and layered with strong performances and deep social commentary.

13. Eyes Without a Face (1960) - France

This chilling fairy tale of guilt and obsession, that made audiences faint when it was first released, still holds up almost 60 years later and is poetically horrific.

12. The Host (2006) - South Korea

This genre-bending monster movie is delightful and a fun ride from start to finish. It's a bizarre and wild mix of slapstick comedy and terrifying  paranoia.

11. Peeping Tom (1960) - United Kingdom

Setting the stage for Point of View Horror, Peeping Tom was the first film to put you in head of the killer as it captures fear in its own unique way.

10. Lake Mungo (2008) - Australia

A strong story that uses the framing of a documentary to help shape a creepy movie-going experience that is guaranteed to satisfy those who are patient.

9. The Wicker Man (1973) - United Kingdom

Don’t let the terrible remake overshadow how great the original truly is. The performances in this one are subtle in their delivery. The film is well crafted as the audience knows that something isn’t quite right from the get go and the ending is memorable, to say the least. .

8. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) - United States

So I cheated with this one. AGWHAAN is technically an American film, shot in California, but spoken entirely in Persian. It paces itself with its terror as the horror elements are well sprinkled throughout but it is incredibly engaging and pulls at the heart strings.

7. The Loved Ones (2009) - Australia

The Loved Ones is horrifically mesmerizing and filled with so many WTF moments that you will wonder why you are still watching but won’t want to turn away.

6. Suspiria (1977) - Italy

This movie is as aesthetically beautiful as it is gory. Argento is a master of lighting and space with a strong use of vivid colors which helps to make Suspiria the stylish classic that it is.

5. Let the Right One In (2008) - Sweden

Let the Right One In might be one of the best love stories ever written. It is heartbreaking and touching with horror elements that leave a strong impression. The story is underlined with hope even though the audience leaves with the feeling that history will be doomed to repeat itself.

4. Thirst (2009) - South Korea

This unique story adds a refreshing breath of life into the Vampire film that has been poorly done so many times before. Add Chan-Wook Park’s insane ability to make every frame breathtakingly beautiful and you have a movie that shouldn’t be missed.

3. Diabolique (1955) - France

A noir mystery thriller that is exceedingly good at keeping you guessing throughout. It's dangerously cruel and with no “jump” scares, it's the suspense and chilling tone that leaves you frightened at the end.

2. 28 Days Later… (2002) - United Kingdom  

A political allegory with a zombie film layered on top. This grizzly flick was on the front end of the zombie resurgence in horror, pushing it back into the forefront of the genre while showing us how destructive fear can really be.

1. Raw (2016) - France

This film is slathered with terrifying imagery that might be best viewed on an empty stomach. It is deliciously unsettling with strong performances that will stick with you long after the movie is over.

20. The Void (2016)

This movie teeters between too over the top and perfectly insane. Sometimes it spends too much time in the former category, but overall it's a ridiculous journey worth watching, especially if you enjoy old school 80’s horror.   

19. The Invitation (2015)

This slow burn has a well crafted tone that will leave you feeling uneasy from beginning to end.

18. Stake Land (2010)

The tone is eerie, the horror elements are strong, the score is top notch and blends under this story perfectly, but what really elevates this movie is the strength of the performances and the writer's ability to create strong and interesting characters.

17. Feast (2005)

A solid dose of comedy mixed with buckets of blood gives us a modern monster movie that you should not miss.

16. Pontypool (2008)

This is a nice little pressure cooker. It gives off a claustrophobic feeling and though it’s mostly talk and little action, it delivers more than you might think.

15. Spring (2014)

This international love story takes it’s time with the set up but when you finally get to the desired destination, it totally pays off.

14. The Devil’s Candy (2015)

After making it’s way around some festivals, the latest outing from Sean Byrne finally got released earlier this year. It’s a short and stylish homage to occult films and adds another strong film to Byrne’s resume.

13. Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

Filled with wit and charm, Behind the Mask perfectly deconstructs the slasher genre which the creators clearly love. It is incredibly intelligent and has plenty of horror elements that will make genre fans pleased.

12. It Comes at Night (2017)

Movie-goers were somewhat disappointed with the direction of this movie. Though I understand why people had that opinion, I completely disagree. Edgerton and Abbott give masterful performances and Shults proves that the fear of the unknown can be debilitating, horrific, and tragic.

11. A Horrible Way To Die (2010)

Here is a stripped-down thriller that relies on storytelling rather than effects and it flat out delivers. Adam Wingard knows what he is doing behind the camera and when he pairs up with writer, Simon Barrett, it tends to go well.

When you think of incredible slasher movies, very rarely does this movie get mentioned along with the other greats. That is a travesty as this could very well be the best the genre has to offer. The imagery is downright terrifying and it set the stage for all those that came after.

7. The Loved Ones (2009)

Sean Byrne has made two movies and they are both on this list. The Loved Ones is horrifically mesmerizing and filled with so many WTF moments that you will wonder why you are still watching but won’t want to turn away.

6. Honeymoon (2014)

This incredibly uncomfortable film will have your skin tingling by the end of it and its stars (Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway) give two all-out performances that make the horror feel so real because of its roots in real life fears and anxieties.

Though IT is dominating the buzz for movies coming out in September, we are also getting a surprise treat in that Darren Aronofsky’s Mother! will also be released this month. For that reason we dive into the work of the film’s dark and thought provoking director.

Critical/Public Response

Aronofsky gains his biggest critical success from 2008 film, The Wrestler. This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone as the film perfectly crafts the story of a washed-up wrestler dealing with struggles inside and outside the ring. It is also worth mentioning that Aronofsky pulls out two amazing performances from Marisa Tomei and Mickey Rourke, which gains both actors Academy Award nominations. However, you can’t always please the fans. Film goers had a tough time enjoying 2006’s The Fountain, with the general consensus that the movie looks great but has a story that is tough to connect to. Dana Stevens from Slate probably has my favorite review, saying “The Fountain is the story of a gifted artist who dared to reach for the stars and paid for his ambition with a really stupid movie.” I disagree as I enjoyed the film but overall, The Fountain doesn’t hurt the director too much as his Response Score still sits at 74.67

Financial Impact

It seems strange to me that a director, that most consider to appeal to film student crowd vs the blockbuster movie goer, has such heavy hitters financially. I guess it is never a smart move to underestimate the power of the American public and their love of biblical stories and Natalie Portman/Mila Kunis sex scenes. Black Swan is the type of movie that studios dream about. Not only did it cost a measly $13 Million, but it grossed over $300 Million worldwide?! That type of efficiency is pretty tough to top. Throw in 2014’s Noah, not a critical success but still a positive financial venture, and you get an addition $237 Million in profit. This makes Aronofsky a director that studios will love. Not only is he going to bring studios awards and critical accolades, but he is also going to bring in money and just as Gordon Gekko would say, “It’s all about the bucks, kid.”

The Defining Style

Aronofsky films are constantly a bleak look into the lives of others as he explores the need for belonging. In his early work, Aronofsky uses quick cuts to tell the story of his characters battling their inner demons. Pi and Requiem For a Dream both act as mosaics, piecing together strong imagery to create a dark experience. The average movie uses somewhere between 600-700 cuts while Requiem uses close to 2,000. These quick edits allow for us to experience the full gambit of the emotions of his characters without wasting any time. What else separates Aronofsky from his peers? The man is ambitious. Not just ambitious like your co-worker, Deborah, who keeps getting coffee for your boss and working 80-hour work weeks ambitious, but let’s take big f*cking chances and hope they pay off ambitious. (Side note: Knock it off Deborah, you are wrecking the curve!) What do I mean? I’m talking about ambition that says, “Let’s see what happens when I tell the story of Noah and the Ark my own way.” I’m talking about ambition that says, “Let’s make a terrifying monster-flick that hides itself in a Oscar-worthy drama about the ballet.” I’m talking about ambition that casts Mickey Rourke as your lead in a drama whose success is totally reliant on the performance of your main character.  I don’t know if he is lucky or if he is a genius and though some might argue, I believe that the risks have been worth the reward.

That’s a Wrap

Aronofsky has been putting uncomfortable and tense moments onto the silver screen for years and it looks as if Mother! is going to be more of the same. He always seems to find the perfect color palette for the story he telling and he continues to set his personal bar high in what his movies can achieve. Though his movies all seem to get mostly positive responses, each film seems to have audiences on the fence. My thoughts are different. In the end, it’s all nice…..except for Noah. Noah was mediocre.

Critical/Public Response

Bigelow’s greatest success came from the phenomenal war drama, The Hurt Locker, which picked up several awards in 2009, including Best Picture and snagged Bigelow an Oscar for Best Director. Not only is it the move that performed best with the critics, but also with the fans. Bigelow pulls incredible performances out of the cast and it is arguably the best movie made about the war in Iraq. That being said, Bigelow doesn’t always knock it out of the park. 2001’s The Weight of Water didn’t perform well in the slightest. Critics and audiences alike thought it was a disengaging, muddled mess. We also can’t write a piece on Kathryn Bigelow without mentioning 1991’s Point Break. It’s an absolute blast of movie with some incredibly iconic scenes. Sure people make fun of it, but I absolutely dig it even if others find it to be a mediocre endeavor. Overall, Bigelow has enough heavy hitters to help her have a respectable response score of 70.52

Financial Impact

Bigelow looks like she is starting to find ways to spend her money wisely as the last 2 pictures are in the green. That being said, The Hurt Locker wasn’t a blockbuster by any means (it's still the lowest grossing Best Picture Winner, even adjusting for inflation, in the history of The Academy Awards) and she has never made a movie that broke $100 million. That being said it seems to be a coin toss on whether or not her movies will be profitable but for the last 9 years she has kept it moving in a positive direction and I hope that Detroit will continue that pattern.

The Defining Style

Bigelow is a tough nut to crack when it comes to finding similar filming styles throughout her lengthy career. She has grown with each and every film that she has made and the versatility of her film's genres have led to different styles of shooting. Realistically, she isn’t doing anything groundbreaking when it comes to filmmaking but her movies look good and the stories work (mainly due to the consistently excellent screenplays from recent regular collaborator Mark Boal). You are also bound to see people get shot, like a lot.  

That’s a Wrap

Kathryn Bigelow is a solid filmmaker. If you take out the early 2000’s, you can see a career that stands up against some of the greatest directors still working. Her early films are moody, gritty, and have some kick ass sequences that are fun to revisit and her most recent films are powerhouses. If Detroit delivers the way I think it will, she will solidify her spot in the upper echelon of directors.

Following the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming I sat down with my resident Comic Book Expert here at The Ark of E (and cousin) Matthew J. Blanchard to discuss The Spider-Man Film Franchise.
