"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1" Is the Best Adaptation So Far

Where's Bill Condon? Take a bow. I read all the "Twilight" books before the films were released and "Breaking Dawn" was my least favorite from the bunch. Maybe it was because I expected something more and was let down, but after seeing the latest adaptation I would like to shake director Bill Condon's hand. I figured "Breaking Dawn" would be the worst out of the films because the book was long and drawn out. I was pleasantly surprised to see the key moments from the book come to life on the screen. All the boring moments were taken away and new ones were added perfectly.

The film begins with Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward's (Robert Pattinson) wedding and then the tasteful honeymoon. The emotion that was missing from the previous films were present. Bella no longer grabs her hair and huffs into a corner. She is a young woman with a personality we were waiting to see. Once Bella learns she's pregnant, the film takes a horrifying approach. For one who has not read the novels will actually find themselves wondering what will happen next. Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is still in love with Bella, but the back and forth triangle is over. Jacob adds comic relief and has grown into his own role as a werewolf. The film has a perfect cliffhanger to keep us all wondering if "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2" will live up to its expections. We will have to wait until November 16, 2012.

In the tradition of raunchy holiday films such as "Bad Santa" and "A Christmas Story," Harold and Kumar have joined the list. The pot-smoking duo have grown up, well sort of, and are now leading different lives away from each other. Harold is a top business man who is married and ready to start a family. Kumar dropped out of medical school and has a pregnant ex-girlfriend. Faith brings the old friends back together as they journey through New York City in search of the perfect Christmas tree. It would not be a Harold and Kumar film without trouble and Neil Patrick Harris. The 3D effects are fun, but not visually amazing. Overall, "A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas" is the perfect film to escape to while the kids and relatives are shopping during the holiday season.

The Cat is Back in "Puss in Boots"

"Puss in Boots" finally shines light upon the cat. Over the years, I found myself wondering if cats would ever be viewed as heroes in the world of film. They are always portrayed as evil, cunning creatures who work for the villain. Dogs are the ones who are loyal, respectful and never do anything wrong. Well, Hollywood should invest in cats because they can surprise people.

"Puss in Boots" is a 3D visual treat. There are times when you may find yourself reaching for the screen trying to pet Puss. In the latest adventure, the audience learns how Puss (Antonio Banderas) received his famous boots. Puss leads the life of a fugitive until he meets Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). She convinces Puss to help her and his old friend Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) find the magic beans which will lead them to the Golden Goose. The only problem is they have to get past Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris).

This is the perfect film for cat lovers as it pokes fun of common cat behaviors. Hopefully the cat will continue to gain respect in Hollywood and move away the evil, lazy and manipulative stereotypes.

"The Rum Diary" Dies Before it Begins

Johnny Depp is the king of odd roles. "The Rum Diary" is based off of the novel by Hunter S. Thompson, which is about Paul Kemp (Depp) who moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico during the 1950's to work for a daily newspaper. At first, the newspaper is just another job to Paul until the rum gets in the way. Kemp eventually learns that the newspaper and Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) want to continue to Americanize Puerto Rico instead of discussing the real issues at hand.

The film is extremely awkward from Depp walking around in his boxers after a rough night to his attempt to seduce Chenault (Amber Heard). Now, maybe that's how Depp wanted Paul to be, but his acting was off. Depp is one of the most amazing actors of this generation, but when his other characters pop out into different roles it doesn't make the character believable.

"The Rum Diary" isn't a complete lost. Paul has tons of drunken escapades and learns about cock fighting. Those parts will keep the audience engaged.

Overall, once the end credits roll there will be someone who will say- "That film was awkward."

"Extinction" to Premiere at the Savannah Film Festival

I had the privilege last summer to work on a film set. I was doing an article for South Magazine and was able to get hands on experience from the cast and crew. For over a year, Kevin McCarey's narrative short "Extinction" continues to grace film festivals across the nation. Audiences will finally get to see Tybee Island, Oakland Island and Hunting Island come to life on the big screen as South Africa. As part of the Savannah Film Festival, "Extinction" will premiere at the new SCAD Museum of Art at 5pm on October 31. The screening is free and open to the public. Please arrive early to secure a seat and enjoy an Q&A session afterwards.

“Real Steel:” An Electrifying, Powerful, Emotional Film

It’s nice to know there are still movies today that will make you jump out of your chair and cheer. There are those few movies like “Rocky,” which give us hope for the underdog as we watch him beat the odds. “Real Steel” is one of those movies.

Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a washed up boxer who’s trying to make a living off of robot fighting. His cocky nature allows him to make quick decisions, which costs him his creditability. Later, he finds out that he may be responsible for his eleven year old son, who he has never met. After a quick business deal, Charlie takes his son Max (Dakota Goyo) in for the summer. Unlike Charlie, Max has patience and tries to help his father with his robot fighting escapades. Max ends up finding his own robot, Atom, in a junk yard. Atom is a Generation 2, which no one would consider fighting. Max doesn’t give up and continues to prove to Charlie that you have to fight for someone or something you love.

The film is powerful as it shows the bond between father and son grow. Atom is the missing link, he brings Charlie and Max together as Charlie learns that you have to work to become something.

“Real Steel” is exciting, energetic and will have you at your feet at the end credits. I highly recommend going to see this film in the theatre.

What I like about all the "Twilight" films is that they are all visually stunning. The scenery is so crisp and clean. "Breaking Dawn" seems to be following the same course.
