After returning to Memphis (FedEx home base) and visiting his girlfriend (Helen Hunt), he is again called away to an Asian destination. He is able to ride in the "jump seats" of a FedEx jumbo jet crossing the Pacific Ocean, and is the only passenger.

During a fierce storm, the plane is blown off-course and ultimately crashes into the ocean. Noland is the only survivor, and is washed ashore on a small island. The bulk of the film deals with his many travails, from gathering food and water to the mental challenges of living alone for years. His primary goal is to build a raft strong enough to cross the coral reef surrounding the island, but local materials are insufficient. He scavenges what he can from FedEx packages that wash ashore from the plane and tries to remain mentally stable. After four years of isolation, a large piece of plastic debris -- strong enough to act as a sail -- washes ashore. Noland is able to build a raft made of palm trees, video tape (acting as rope to hold it together), and other materials and with the help of his new sail, escapes the island. He is eventually rescued by a passing ship.

Returning home, he finds that his fiancee has married, and he has to begin his life anew. Out of all the FedEx packages that washed ashore from the downed jet, he kept one unopened and intact. This last package he delivers at the end of the film, though we never find out what it contains.

REVIEWS

Wow, this movie is great. Tom Hanks's acting is good. I can feel his character's (Chuck) emotions. I even cried! :D What Chuck does in this movie reminded me of early year of mankind history. Chuck's effort to survive and stay alive. Start living in cave and hunting for foods. Slowly he learn to manage to have own home and field. His first effort to make fire and hunting for foods are funny to see but also sad. You'll love the adventure he has. Feel his desperate feeling and attempt of suicide.

Good movie for me is a story that can moved your heart and left good lesson in life, aside of technical things like photography or its special effect technology of course. And this movie is in my criteria for good movie.

What will you do if u stranded in the middle of no where... In place you have never been to... and you are ALONE! What would you do? Can you survive? Can you keep your hope that someday you'll return home and be together once again with your loved one? Can you prepare for the worse... losing life you once have... losing evertyhing...

This movie will makes you wonder and think how blessed you are with what you have. Life is about accepting and move on after you lose the battle. But don't worry, coz life also offers you another oportunities, possibilities to have other beautiful life, as long as you keep your hope and spirit high.

Enjoy the movie. Peace, (^_^)v

Chuck Noland: We both had done the math. Kelly added it all up and... knew she had to let me go. I added it up, and knew that I had... lost her. 'cos I was never gonna get off that island. I was gonna die there, totally alone. I was gonna get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where it was going to happen. So... I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I-I - , I couldn't even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over *nothing*. And that's when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing. Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that's what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day my logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in, and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I'm back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass... And I've lost her all over again. I'm so sad that I don't have Kelly. But I'm so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?

Credit:
http://wikipedia.com
http://imdb.com

Cinta Setaman

I try to summarize my conclusions about Cinta Setaman the recent Indonesian movie directed and written by Harry Dagoe Suharyadi.

Cinta#1 Kado Istimewa
A boy who works so hard to buy clean mineral water:
I think this is the representation of first love. This child had a dream to buy a roller blade. One day he met a girl who’s so catching his eyes and suddenly he fell in love with this girl. First love usually a bit childish and confuse yes he felt something but he couldn’t really define it. Because of this he changed his mind to buy roller blade and bought a doll instead.

Cinta#2 Stirbucks Mentok
A DVD seller who’s so rude with his crazy-about-Stirbucks Coffee brother.
This is what I think a blood—connection love and stupid-reason love. We simply love them because the one we love is our relatives. In this scene the older brother was so rude and got angry to his brother with no reason. Meanwhile this little brother was in love with Stirbucks coffee. I guess sometimes we just don’t understand why we love a thing. Maybe because it really deserves it (the taste is so good) or habitual action or we love the idea to work hard, full of intrigue; do anything just to have this thing we love.

Cinta#3 Seks, Cinta dan Pendidikan Moral Pancasila
A teenage girl who’s in love with her teacher and she lives with her bitch mom
This is a forbidden love. She loved her PMP teacher and this might happen because in her eyes, this wise teacher is like his missing father. In the other way her mother expresses her love by inviting pervert men to use her (and get some money).
So for her teenage daughter all she knows about love is to seduce and to take a man to get laid. I know this is one stupid idea but again we use to absorb thing around us.

Cinta#5 Moshi-moshi
Suzuki-san, Japanese who’s in love with one Indonesian karaoke girl
Suzuki is typical Japanese who has discipline and maybe a bit boring life. I think he knew this karaoke girl when he visited Indonesia. One day this girl tried to call him and asked him help. He sell his apartment and live in a smaller one, he even quit his job. In the end this girl just vanished.
Sacrifice love. Suzuki sacrifices his entire life tough he already knew this girl didn’t really love him.

Cinta#6 Yang Terindah
A reality show (?) director who lives in poverty with his anger wife
This scene was opened by a picture of a harmonious family. How they play in a park. The mom is so happy and everybody’s laughing. Unfortunately it was only a dream. The mom is not that happy because they live in poverty and all that her husband does is to dream. He dreams to direct a reality show in TV and the show is so touching.
One day he got an accident and he died when he realize his wife is still angry. This story is what I call a demanding love. Love is conditional. If you have money I’ll love you but if you don’t then…

Cinta#6 Wa'alaikum salam
A kindergarten owner who’s really is in trouble yet her husband wants to get married for the second time.
I don’t really understand this acceptance love. The kindergarten owner is a beautiful and soft woman who’s really in trouble. But her husband just came to her easily and said he is thinking about getting married again. He knew this wonderful woman and I don’t know why he said he just wanted to marry her.
The beautiful wife only smiled to him and said yes.

Cinta#7 ....
Ikan Arwana, a wife and her devoted husband
Devotion love. For this husband ikan arwana was his boss’ fish and they must take care of it. But the wife had an idea to sell it and say it was dead to his husband’s boss. They had a big fight about it. Days later when the husband realized that his wife was true, he got home but the fish already gone. His wife said, it died and she cooked it for lunch.

Cinta#8 Pisang Ambon Teman Rio
A mother with her gay and free lifestyler son.
This is one typical minangese mother who’s so devoted to her religion. She wanted so badly to pilgrim in Macca but one day she discovered that his son is a gay and live his sexual life so freely. So contrary to the way she had lived.
In the end she said nothing. Not even a word when she realized her son paid her Haji cost. She kept her sorrow in silent and didn’t go to Macca.
This is a nature love. Motherly love. So pure and unconditional.

(by Pujangga Cinta)

Buaran Theatre aka Butet

I first entered this bioskop when it screened Pan’s Labyrinth early this year. The only reason I choose to watch it here because I was afraid if I didn’t go that time I won’t be able to watch that movie anymore. If one movie screens in Buaran Theater that means it’s their last time because Buaran usually gets the latest edition of a released movie.

And because there were only view people who watch this movie, they didn’t give me seat number which means I can sit wherever I want. At that time I sat right on the main entrance so I could have my best view.

And then this week I went there twice to watch Cinta Setaman by Harry Dagoe (the same thing happened, that was the last day they screened this movie). I sat on the right main entrance with Lisdi and the view is still OK. Then the next day we watched Laskar Pelangi. This was the time me and Lisdi really take a close look on this theatre.

So, Buaran has 4 screening theatres inside it and I think they have the same capacity. The screen where the movie is projected is quiet big and the sound well … not really surround sound but it’s OK. The chairs are not comfy enough because they’re too small but the altitude of the rows are quiet high so we won’t be bothered by people in front of us’ head. The environment is enough only Lisdi said it was a little hot.

Buaran is completed with Kantin Buaran. This is the snack bar actually and you can buy brondong, chocolate bars, snack and beverage. They provide only drinks in can or bottle so don’t hope to get a hot cappuccino or fresh juice here. There is also wartel and a place to play. But when we were there this dingdong place is close. There are also two toilets for woman and man. The toilets are small yet it’s clean enough. Some people go to Buaran Theater only to chat with friends because there are eight round cozy coaches in waiting room and each round has movie posters above it. The posters contain movies that have released a very long time ago. So if you want to fresh up your memories on old movies just go to Buaran. One poster I remember to see is ‘A Time to Kill’ poster. Wow, when was it released, 1995?

Nevertheless, Butet still has the old version of ticketing. There are four ticket lockets for each theatre and they are not computerized. So you’ll have the ticket with no title of the movie printed on it.

I don’t know whether we can classify Buaran as 21 or XXI. If you go to www.21cineplex.com they include Buaran as one of their theatre. But there’s no sign of 21 in Buaran. With the vintage version of Bioskop I do wish 21 Group will renovate this place just like what they did to Metropole XXI. Put carpets on its floor, add some Air Conditioners in the waiting room, improve the sound and please change the seat with more comfy chair.

I used to think Buaran is one place just like Metropole XXI. People go there only to watch movie. But I guess right now, this reason isn’t everything because there is Buaran Plaza right beside Buaran Theatre nowadays. So, people who go to Butet will easily change their mind and go to Buaran Plaza instead. I don’t know, it’s just a thought.

But again, I still recommend Butet as one of the old bioskop you can visit. You’ll find old and vintage atmosphere there and the community, Buaran people who go there is one unique people too. I guess this theatre has become one icon for Buaran people. If people are being asked about Buaran they’ll easily say, oh, Buaran? Near the Bioskop Buaran?

Right in front of the Butet you’ll be able to see the famous ‘Jembatan Cinta’, a well-known Buaran by pass bridge full with pairs of lovers not only in Saturday night but the other nights too.

And if you want to go to Buaran Theatre simply just follow this route:
Train:
KRL Bekasi-Kota… get down in Buaran Station and take a walk.
Buses:
Metromini 506 Kampung Melayu-Pondok Kopi
Metromini 47 Senen-Pondok Kopi
Metromini 52 Kampung Melayu-Stasiun Cakung
Angkots:
KWK 25 Rawamangun-Cakung
KWK 26 Rawamangun-Kalimalang
KWK 27 Rawamangun-Kalimalang
KWK 22 Pondok Gede-Walikota

Enjoy your nostalgic momment there!

(By Pujangga Cinta)

Megaria 21 aka Metropole XXI

Megaria is located at the corner of three busy and important streets in Central Jakarta : Jalan Diponegoro, Jalan Cikini and Jalan Proklamasi. This cinema was built in 1949 and opened for public in 1957. Now, this bioskop building remains the same. As a part of 21 Group, recently Megaria was renovated, now there's new carpet, new comfortable toilets, new snack bar, new garden cafe, new musholla and the ticketing is also changed to computerize. So you won't be shame to collect the tickets, right? They also changed the name back to its core, Metropole and upgraded the cinema to XXI. And because Metropole XXI is more than 50 years-old building no wonder if Pemda Jakarta classified it as a one of protected cagar budaya. By the way, Metropole XXI is quiet lucky because it survives unlike the other old cinema buildings in Jakarta which is now vanished or changed their functions.

Metropole XXI has 6 theaters in it: Theater 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in the same building while Theater 5 and 6 are separated in new building right behinds Giant Supermarket. The last two are smaller in capacity.

Metropole XXI is one unique cinema because of its location, its history, its vintage and most of all for me... this is the real cinema. My sister is the first one who mentioned it and I agree with her. Metropole XXI is so sophisticated because people who go there will have well... basically one main purpose on their minds: to go watch movie. If you go to cinema located in one big mall then your main goal will distract and be easily corrupted. Hahaha... that's my opinion and I guess that's why I dare to go to this cinema and put away the idea that I just go so far away from my home only to watch movie.

This cinema is quiet fun and more comfortable right now if you wanna go there. Although one of my friend who just go there complained about the sound system. He said it was too loud but again... I said to him, it's a cinema, right? If you find the snack from the cinema is too expensive you can hide some snacks and beverage you can buy in Giant Supermarket in your bag. Again, an advise from me, bring larger bag if you want to go to Metropole XXI. If you're still hungry after watching movie you can go to XXI Garden Cafe or if you prefer cheaper place... just visit the restaurants right beside the Metropole: you'll find Mpekmpek and Ayam Bakar. There are also barber shop, wartel and guess what, you gotta be kidding me... Pijat Refleksi service there. Yes, I’m telling you the truth. For your information this Pijat Refleksi was the former locket for ticket back in old year of Megaria.

Last but not least how to go there?
Train:
Jakarta-Bogor.... Stasiun Cikini (then you need to walk a bit)
Bus:
Patas 213 Kampung Melayu-Grogol
Kopaja 502 Kampung Melayu-Tanah Abang
Metromini 49 Pulogadung-Manggarai
And there is also oplet... you can take oplet in Jalan Matraman headed to RSCM.

So, movie freaks, wanna try an old atmosphere of watching movie? Go to Metrople XXI! Have fun, guys! Enjoy your movie! … (Pujangga Cinta)

European Film Festival: Europe on Screen 2008

The European Film Festival “EUROPE ON SCREEN 2008” takes place in October and November 2008 in nine cities across Indonesia, i.e.:

* Jakarta (24-31 October)
* Yogyakarta (1-2 November)
* Surabaya (6-7 November)
* Denpasar (8-9 November)
* Bandung (10-11 November)
* Semarang (12-13 November)
* Makassar (14-15 November)
* Banda Aceh (17-18 November)
* Medan (21-22 November).

This year, the festival will be devoted to the theme of "City Landscapes and Urban Visions".

Tickets can be obtained at each venue 45 minutes before screening time. History teacher Eugene Simenot (Spacey) offers the same ongoing extra-credit assignment he has proffered every year: Come up with an idea that will change the world. However, he expects nothing more from his students than halfhearted efforts that fall far shy of their mark. Simenot is therefore unprepared for precocious, irrepressible Trevor McKinney (played with wide-eyed wonder by Osment), who conjures up a stunning scheme. Trevor suggests the concept that every person who benefits from someone else's good deed should "pay it forward," instead of paying it back, and in turn offer favors to three other people. The first guinea pig for Trevor's experiment is his overworked, imperfect mom (Helen Hunt) for whom he tries to find a boyfriend.

REVIEWS

This movie is full of inspiration. Maybe it's right that sometimes the simplest idea can make the biggest differences. How kindness and love could effect lots of people. It made me think about my own life. What have i done all this time to make myself proud and make good differences for people that close to me. A must see movie, you'll enjoy yourself and maybe after you've seen this movie you also will make something that could affect the world.
